Hello beautiful readers, I hope everyone survived the heat of summer and are now ready to get moving outside in the cooler fall weather. I like to use these articles to motivate my readers to get more active, so this month, I’m going for your pocketbook. Not many things speak louder than money, so here is why you should start eating healthier and walking everyday instead of inviting type 2 diabetes into your life with unhealthy behaviors. Diabetes is on the rise and while there are various factors contributing to the rise of diabetes, lifestyle choices play a significant role. Check this out!

Diabetes Costs Alot of Money:

HAUNTED BARRIOO TALE FROM SAN ANTO:

TheAlamowasbuiltin1718byreligiousmonkswhowhichto sharetheirreligiousteachingswithNativeAmericans.Theypicked thesiteafteracottonwoodtreeonthesitecaughttheireyes.Atthe timetheAlamowascalledtheMissionSanAntoniodeValeroand fornearlyeightyyearsalongwithfourmoremissionsbuilt,the locationsheldgreatrelationswithNativeAmericansinsharingtheir religion.In1793,TheSpainardsarrivedandsecularizedtheir missionsandturnedTheAlamointoafortwithnowaccumulating itsnewname.

In1836,theAlamobecamemoremodernindesignintoa militaryfort.AswordcametoGeneralSamHoustonofSantaAnna reinforcinghisarmyinMexicowiththousandsoftroops,aworry cameupontheGeneralasheorderedColonelJamesBowieto destroytheAlamobycombiningdynamitewithgunpowderto spreadonthewallsandblowittopieces.Jamesrefused,whenhe arrivedattheAlamo,butfeltthatwiththeonlytwenty-fivemen guardingtheAlamoitwouldbeaslaughter Therestwouldbe historyinthemaking!

AsColonelJamesBowierememberedGeneralSamHoustonorderinghim nottodestroytheAlamo,hadallhismanlinedup,heaskedforalltochoose tocrossalinehehadmadeinthedirtofwhowouldstayandfightSanta Anna’sarmyenclosinginwithover1500troops.Theoddswerenow189 Alamodefenderstoover1500ofSantaAnna’sarmy Whileoddswerenot good,theAlamodefendersweremadeoutofveryskillfulandveteran fightersincludingtheinfamousDavyCrockett,whowasrumoredtohave killed108bearsandalsorodealligatorsasaworkout.Whilesomeclaimed Davy’swildmoralesidewaswhatwasneededforthisupcomingbattle.

orderedtohavetheTexan’sbodiesstackedandputinthreepyresto beburned.Astoldbyanewspaper1911interviewfromtwo childrenwhowerepresentatthebattleandliveddescribed,one pyrewasattheCommercearea,oneatthepresentfire-stationon Houstonstreet,wherehumanboneremainswerediscoveredupon constructionofthefire-station,andthethirdattheoldLudlow boardinghouse,whereRivercentermallnowresides.

Thehauntingsstarteddaysafterthebattle,aslegendhasitthat afterthebattleandasSantaAnna’stroopsheadedtoSanJacinto, GeneralAndradeorderedColonelSancheztodestroytheAlamo,as ColonelSanchez’sarmyarrivedtheyweremetbysixphantom guardeddevilswithswordsonfireandtheypointedtheswordsat them.TheyretreatedimmediatelyinfearbacktoGeneralAndrade’s army.Indisbelief,GeneralAndradereturnedtothesitewithseveral moretroopsandwitnessedthesimilarphantomguards.TheAlamo wassavedagainbyphantomdefenders.Couldithavebeenold Texandefendersstillholdingdownthefort?

Thereisanotherstoryprintedina1894ofagentlemanwho claimedhehadadaughterwhowasphysicandcouldcommunicate withthepassedonsoldiersattheAlamo,whichclaimedthatthere wasgoldburiedinthewallsoftheAlamo,worththousands.In modernday,muchhauntinghavebeenreportedwithalsomany claimingtoseephantomsoldiersandevensometimesNative AmericanfromwindowsoftheMengerHotel.Areportalsoshowsa storeinsideRivercentermallhashadparanormalactivitywiththe registeropeningonitsown,booksbeingthrownaround,andeven verycoldspotsinthestore.InMarch6,1991theanniversaryofthe battle,thelightwentoffandonallday,strangesoundswereheard, andmuchmoreoccurrencewerereportedinthisstore.Thefacts wererelatedtobeingthatstoreisrightaboveoneofthepyres, whereseveralofthesoldierremainswereburnedandthesame locationtheLudlowboardinghouseresided.IntheAlamochapelit issaidthatonewillbeovercamewithanoverwhelmingfeelingof sadnessandsomeclaimedtohaveburstedintearsfornoreason.An apparitionhasbeenspottedinthesouthwestcorneroftheAlamo,of acrazedman,whoguardstheburiedtreasureofgoldmention earlierofthephysiclittlegirl.Aphantomspiritin1800’sattirehas beenspottedmarchinglefttorightonthesouthsideoftheroof. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH - NFL

BetweenSeptember15toOctober15,HispanicHeritageMonth(HHM) takesplaceeveryyear.Itisatimetorecognizeandcelebratethemany contributions,diversecultures,andextensivehistoriesoftheAmerican Latinocommunity.Since1968,HispanicHeritageMonthwasobservedas “HispanicHeritageWeek,”andtwodecadeslaterin1988,itwasextended toamonth.HHMiscelebratedthroughoutAmericaatfestivals,artshows, conferences,communitygatherings,andmuchmore.

EventhoughmanybrandsdopaytributetoHispanicandLatino communities,thereareonlyafewwhoextendtheirsupportbeyond festivities.Onlythree,Target,Cheetos,andtheNationalFootballLeague (NFL)areelevatingtheirLatino-focusedcampaignsthisyear,accordingto BrandInnovatorsinanarticlebyAlexa(Comeau,2023).

ItwasinOctober2013whenIfoundalumponmybreastandofallplaces,itwasat aBreastCancerAwarenessEventwiththeSanAntonioSilverStars.Iwaswithmy friendSusyWilliamsattheevent,andshewastheveryfirstpersonItoldbecauseI wassoinspiredtosharewhatIhaddiscovered,fromalltheinspiringstoriesbeing toldaboutBreastCancerSurvivorsfromevent.IendedupgoingtotheERbecause Iwasinsomuchpain.Iwasthirty-eightatthetimeandbecausethelumpwasso big,theERDoctorscheduledanemergencymammogram,sincetheyarenotoften scheduleduntilyouareforty.Iwasthankfulthatmydearfriend,StephanieGarza, wenttotheappointmentwithme.Iwasterrified.Sureenough,afterwaitinginthe waitingroom,Iwascalledback,andtheydidinformmethatIindeedhadapositive tumorforbreastcancer,andIwasextremelyluckybecausetheycaughtinontime. Youenterthisgalaxywiththekeyofinventiveness.Beyonditisanother dimension:amacrocosmofhead,heart,andhips.You'removingintoa spectrumbothanalyticalandintellectual,passionateandemotional,ofdance andlibido.You'vejustcrossedoverinto...theStateofMusicinTexas.

About250millionyearsago,theareaweknowasTexaswascoveredby water.Billionsofammonitesandothermarineorganismsswamandfedand diedinthesilenceofthedeep.Theirbodiesbecamethelimestonethatmuch ofTexastodayisbuiltupon(thiswasthebeginningofthefirstRockEra).☺

WhenSantaAnnaarrivedatSanAntoniotoquelltherebellion,heorderedhis bandtoplay"ElDegüello,"asignalthatthedefendersofthegarrisonatthe oldmissionwouldreceivenoquarter–andtheBattleoftheAlamowas begun.Afewweekslater,toRemembertheAlamo,therevolutionariesplayed aratherunorthodoxbattlesong.Asmallbandofmusiciansmusthaveinspired theTexiansandconfusedtheirenemieswiththebawdylyrics:“WillYou CometotheBower?”

In18minutes,independencewaswon.Anewsongcameoutin1853that combinedMinstrelandMarchingMusic.“TheYellowRoseofTexas” concernsthelegendofEmilyWest,awomanofcolorwhosupposedlykept SantaAnnaoccupiedwhileSamHoustonreadiedhistroops.

NewimmigrantsbeganarrivingintoTexas.CzechsandGermans introducednewstringandhorninstrumentsandcompositions(such asMozart’sSymphonyNo.40).Theirpolkasandwaltzesenthralled notonlytheTeutonicdescendantsbutallofTexassociety.Operatic choruseswerestandardrepertoireforsingingsocietiesacrossthe state.TheBeethovenMännerchor,foundedinSanAntonioin1865, isstillactivetoday

Thefolktraditionofyodelingwassoonpickedupbythecowboy culture,thepolkabytheConjuntocommunity,andthepianoby TexasBluesmen.MaxBaca,adescendantofJosephBacawho emigratedtoTexasfromCzechoslovakiain1860,continueshis familymusicaltraditionwitha“BeerDrinkingPolka.”

Beforeradiowascommonplace,sheetmusictraveledfromcoastto coastbywordofmouthandbythe1890s,Ragtimewasking.Julius WeissfromSaxonywenttoNortheastTexas,wherehetaughta youngAfrican-Americantobecomeacomposerandpianist.Scott Joplin,dubbedthe"KingofRagtime,"composedmorethan40rags, oneragtimeballet,andtwooperas.Oneofhisfirstandmost popularpieces,the"MapleLeafRag,"becamethegenre'sfirstand mostinfluentialhit.

TheBluesdevelopedinthepoorBlackruralcommunitiesinTexas andothersouthernstates.‘BlindLemon’Jefferson,theFatherofthe TexasBlueswasborninEastTexasin1893.Hewasaserious showman,balancingadriving,unpredictableguitarstylewitha booming,two-octavevoice.Thesoundofhis"BlackSnakeMoan" influencedmanybluesmen.

This month on Henry Z's Music Beat's we talk to Mr Ruben Naranjo III. Many conjunto fans recognize the last name "Naranjo" as one of the last names of the pioneers of the conjunto industry for Mr Ruben Naranjo Sr. The Naranjo name is part of a musical dynasty of musicians. As we get to know more about Ruben Naranjo III he tells us,

"I’vebeensingingsinceIwasaround5yearsold. Iusedtosingwith mygrandfather(RubenNaranjoSr)inhisbackyardandIsangonstage withhimafewtimesaswell.HetaughtmehowtosingandinSan Antonio,hetookmeonstagetosinginfrontofafewthousandpeople,” Naranjosaid.“Iwas6atthetimeandIhadtostandontopofhis accordioncasetoreachthemic.”
