EDITORIAl The Power of Dreams. Words teach, things work, dreams lead: there is nothing in the world stronger and speedier and powerful than a dream. Behind any single motion, behind any single effort, behind all our love and even behind all our fear there is a dream.

Enrico Barbieri Editor In Chief

A dream makes each day different from the previous and the next one. A dream makes everything and every person different from all the others. A dream fuels our imagination, enlightens our minds, feeds our hearts and allows us every day to know that we are alive, that we are on the right way or on the wrong one. A dream is that magical spark that will make us always say: I can do it!

“If a person has no more dreams, he does not have a reason for living. Dreaming is necessary even if in the dream there must be a glimpse of reality. For me this is one of the keys of life.” Ayrton Senna

KEY NOTE I am a designer and I am wired to be innovational and forward thinking. To innovate I have to be creative and curious. Consequently, I need inspiration. So what inspires me? Well, it’s the “Why” that inspires me. The “What” and the “how” are simple to answer while the ‘Why’ is more tricky.

Frank Stephenson McLaren Design Director

Mostly, a designer strives to challenge the status-quo in order to make life happier, more comfortable and more emotional for all of us. The way we dothis is to question and challenge the current paradigms; we imagine, innovate, adapt and progress. I describe this as a type of winning but to really win, one must lift the competitive bar of life so that it reaches a new level. This takes a constant internal drive towards innovation and this brings us closer to being the best we can be. Life, for a designer, is about achieving a sense of accomplishment by making the world a better place. All creative work is important when it’s done well and is useful to society. Doing our best requires pride in what we do and that we have the integrity to achieve our goals. This, in turn, enriches the lives of other people, making life for all of us much more meaningful, fulfilling and rewarding. We must challenge ourselves to think outside of tradition or we would never have anything that is truly groundbreaking. To do this we must let go of logic, logic only takes us from here to somewhere, while imagination has the power to take us everywhere. It’s this gift of the power to imagine that gives us a preview of both the future and life’s coming allures. What we dream of and create in the present moment is the future unfolding. Albert Einstein famously said thatimagination is more important than knowledge and thatcreativity is intelligence having fun. What a joy then to have the opportunity to imagine, create and innovate... to make the world a better place! What inspires you now and how can you be creative today?

secret salt lake location in country Victoria, a rare 1960s English racecar and a collection of impeccable suiting set a dazzling tone in a new campaign for men’s fashion designer Dom Bagnato. Sourcing a 1965 McLaren Can/Am racecar as inspiration for the shoot, renowned fashion photographer James Pipino has created a striking collection of images “that celebrate a love of fashion, automobiles and fine craftsmanship”. Along side the rare racecar, Chadwick’s model Jaymes Triglone contributes to the aesthetic, evoking 1960a era where team owners, engineers and drivers would arrive at the track in full suits. Built by McLaren-Elva in 1965, the McLaren MIB 30/05 Can-Am saw considerable competitive usage in the Canadian-American Sports Car Series from 1966 to 1969. During this time, it raced against some of the world’s most notable drivers including Formula One world champions

Denny hulme, John Surtees, Jackie Stuart, Phill hill, Graham hill and Mario Andretti. After going through a number of owners and being left idle for decades, the car eventually received a ten-year long restoration. It began competing in historic races in the US before it was bought by an English collector in 2006 who ran it in similar historic events in the UK, before selling it to its current owner, Australian collector who shipped it to the country in late 2012. The car raced for the first time on Australian soil in 2013, competing in the Phillip Island Classic and Australian F1 Grand Prix. The campaign launches next week, with print, in-store and online material being rolled out around Australia and New Zealand. he eighth round of the season, which took place at Sachsenring circuit - a highly dramatic weekend with some riders that suffered huge crashes! After the first free practice Jorge Lorenzo’s pace looked crushing… until he crashed in the Friday’s afternoon session. A big high-side damaged the titanium plate holding together his already broken – in Assen – left collarbone. Then Dani Pedrosa was the favorite to win on Sunday, as he had won the last three races. But Repsol Honda’s rider crashed after a high-side one day later and injured his collarbone too. After that, Pedrosa missed a chance to extend his leading in the championship over Lorenzo, as both of them were absent from Sunday’s race. In that occasion Marc Marquez scored his second pole position of the season on Saturday, but after a poor start on Sunday he dropped to fourth place. Even if Valentino Rossi took the lead in the first corner, at the end of the first lap, Stefan Bradl passed him. The local hero was leading for the next six laps, but was soon overtaken firstly by Marquez and then by Rossi. In the meantime Cal Crutchlow fought back after losing a lot of time on the start. With eleven laps to go, the British rider took the second place from Rossi… even if rider number #35, Crutchlow, was heading to the race with injuries on his arms, hands and left leg. 26

Even if it looked that Crutchlow will score his first-ever victory, in the end Marc Marquez was too strong for him. The 20-year-old Spaniard had in Germany his second win of the season by only 1.6 seconds over Cal. Thanks to that triumph, this year rookie was able to retake the world championship lead. Valentino Rossi claimed a second consecutive podium after his return to winning ways in Assen. The fourth place went for local hero Stefan Bradl, while another Honda’s rider, Alvaro Bautista was fifth. Bradley Smith’s sixth place confirmed two British riders in the top six of premier class race for the first time in two decades!

tefan Bradl did not have time to rest after the Dutch TT, as before the German round he went to Argentina. There, for two days with few other riders, he was testing at Termas de Rio Hondo circuit. As the round at the Sachsenring circuit is the home Grand Prix for LCR Honda MotoGP’s rider, he came there double motivated after scoring in Assen his first front row start in premier class. After progression in the last couple of rounds, the 23-year-old from Munich started his home round with setting the fourth fastest time in the first free practice. A few hours later, in FP2, he gave his fans something to celebrate, as he was the fastest! Saturday was also a good day, as in the afternoon Bradl was fighting for pole position once again. Unfortunately a small crash affected his final performance and he scored fourth place on the grid of his home race. On Sunday Stefan did a really good start and after he attacked Valentino Rossi at the end of the first lap, the German rider was leading in the German Grand Prix! He began to battle with the front guys, but at the end he missed an opportunity to finish on the podium at Sachsenring. Home fans saw LCR’s rider finishing in fourth and equaling his best career result. 32

“I think it was a good weekend for us even if we missed the chance to achieve the podium – said Stefan after the race. - Actually I have done a good start and I was capable to lead the race for some laps but, when the guys passed me, I could see that they had more corner speed especially in section 2, which was the weak point for us. We have been very competitive and very fast in the remaining sections so we are pretty satisfied about our job. Okay… I missed the chance to reward my Team and my crowd with a podium finish but we do not give up and we will keep on fighting in Laguna. I especially want to thank my fans… I could feel their great support these days and it was something special to me.”

championship to 16 points. Bradl was able to claim his first-ever MotoGP podium finish in a comfortable second place. After a great battle till the very end of the race, Valentino Rossi scored a place number three. The Italian rider was faster on the finish line by only 0.059s over Alvaro Bautista. Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo were both back in action after missing the race in Germany due to their collarbone injuries. And despite being not fully fit, they were able to finish the weekend at Laguna Seca in fifth and sixth place respectively. An early crash, by Aleix Espargaro, ended his run as a best CRT rider in every Grand Prix this year while his rival in that category, Hector Barbera, took tenth position.

“It’s a great result for us – said the rider from Munich right after the race. - We did a good job all across the weekend. Of course expectations were high after I had pole yesterday, but I knew I had good speed and that I could be fast from the beginning. I tried to push from the start and I think I did that very well. I struggled a little bit. I thought the race speed would be a little quicker but, with the full tank of fuel, I had a few problems with the front. When Marc caught me I saw that he had some more edge grip on the tyre and that he was able to open up a gap. I just tried to manage the gap to Valentino (Rossi), which was not easy, and it was a long and tough race. Sure I want to thank Lucio, the whole team and all the fans and I am happy to have my dad here with me to celebrate this important result together!”

he official opening of the Circuit of Jarama (Circuito del Jarama) in 1967, was a momentous milestone in the long history of Race. Designed by John Hugenholtz, the circuit was built by Alessandro Rocci north of Madrid with a length of 3,404 km. After so many years the circuit still has an excellent surface for a great challenge of any sporting competition. Since the circuit was built, the layout never changed, it has a short straight and most of the course consists of tight, twisty corners so overtaking is very difficult. The last Formula One race was held at the circuit 1981 and the last MotoGP race was held 1998, when it was considered too narrow for modern racing. From then until today, it still holds occasional sports car and motorcycle races. Those and many other smaller events have made the circuit of Jarama be established as one of the most important circuits worldwide.

One of the most exciting and greatest happenings is the Jarama Vintage Festival that offers the whole family motor sport, fashion, music and games from yesterday. At the small paddock visitors are transported to the past, a trip back in time to the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, full of attractions, characters and more. It was an event that brought nostalgia to the most romantic times of motorcycling and motoring. Legendary motor bikes like Honda NSR, MV Agusta, Derbi, Ossa and Minarelli, just to name a few, were back on track with famous and legendary motorcycle riders like Angel Nieto, Jorge Martinez Aspar, Eugenio Lazzarini, Pier Paolo Bianchi and Carlos Lavado and more. You were a witness of a performance where three generations shared a past that became present. Other championships also occupied the track, as the Historic Endurance Racing, Touring and GT prior to 1975. Single-cylinder bikes, vintage motocross and classic trial filled the circuit with gasoline odor. But besides the part on the engine, Jarama Vintage Festival has a large market with Classic Cars that collectibles offered… and even real cars for sale. It has become tradition that in a spectacular circus tent actors with vintage costumes perform at the event. The classic cars circulate around the paddock and you can visit a military camp of World War II, ridden by Historical Reconstruction associations, wearing their uniforms, armor and artillery. The Jarama Vintage Festival was much more than a motor event: it was a door in time to enjoy with the whole family. So if this year you have missed it, try not to do the next. Come to see a different event with a special atmosphere far beyond anything you have seen before.

had spent holidays to recover from collarbone injuries. After a poor start from tenth on the grid, at the end Valentino Rossi had caught battling Alvaro Bautista and Cal Crutchlow. Some ambitious and incredible maneuvers resulted that the Italian took the fourth place by only 0.060s over Crutchlow! Behind Stefan Bradl in seventh, Ducati’s riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso wildly battled for eight. Contact between the duos in the last corner saw both of them bouncing over kerbs and allowing Bradley Smith to overtake them! Aleix Espargaro recovered after his crash in qualifying and took best CRT position once again.

“honestly I am a bit disappointed about this result and I had mixed feelings in this weekend – admitted Bradl on Sunday’s afternoon. - At the beginning we were very strong but after 3 crashes in the practices I lost a bit of confidence. We have tried to adjust the bike but, during the race, those changes made the bike too heavy to ride for me. I could not keep the same speed for the whole race because I was too tired so I lost the guys in front of me. Now I just want to move on to Brno and try to be back in the pack.”

Ayrton Senna VINTAGE EMOTIONS

text: Giuliano Donati

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN AYRTON SENNA IS PROBABLY THE MOST LOVED AND ADMIRED FORMULA 1 DRIVER OF ALL TIME. HIS REPUTATION EXCEEDS FAR OF ANY OTHER PILOT IN THE FOURWHEEL MOTORSPORT AND ALSO IN TWO-WHEEL WORLD. HIS ATTITUDE OF A PURE DRIVER ALWAYS READY TO FIGHT ON TRACK AND TOTALLY UNTOUCHED BY THE POST-RACE AND REGULATION CONTROVERSIES MADE HIM AN ICON OF MOTORSPORT AROUND THE WORLD. AYRTON SENNA GAVE HIS FANS MORE THRILLS DURING HIS TEN YEARS RACING IN FORMULA 1 THAN MANY OTHER DRIVERS IN MUCH MORE TIME ON TRACK.

A

yrton grew up with engines, speed and kerbs in the blood, specifically the kerbs of the gokart track at Interlagos in Brazil, his country of birth, where he began to race at the age of four. After an early and amazing career start in the South American Junior Championships and World Championships Kart in Europe, Ayrton landed to his first major category in 1982, in the last race of the British Formula 3 Championship season, where – in his first attempt at it – he conquered pole position, fastest lap and victory. These are the premises

for his transition to Formula 3 the following year, where Senna, at the wheel of the Ralt-Toyota car, won the world title and totalled 12 victories out of 20 races. Ayrton Senna made his debut in Formula 1 in 1984 with the Toleman-hart team, on a car certainly not competitive but which allowed him to shine with a sensational second place in the Grand Prix of Monaco, under pouring rain. In that race Ayrton confronted the driver who, from that mo-

ment on, will be his rival, a man who was in every way the opposite of the Brazilian: Alain Prost, “the Professor”. The rivalry between the two drivers would continue uninterrupted throughout the life of Ayrton, with dramatic and tense moments but also spectacular ones. 1985 was the year of the move to Lotus, where Senna remained for three seasons totalling 6 victories and 16 pole positions, the first of a long series, and where he drove for the first time honda engines, first mounted on the Lotus car in 1987 and later to become the engines most loved by the Brazilian, who won his 3 world titles with them. The key year for Senna’s success was 1988. In that year Senna was engaged by McLaren-honda MP4/4 as teammate of Alain Prost and went on to win his first F1 world title. In that year Senna won at all levels the battle with his French rival: 8 victories vs 7, 13 poles against 3. The world title arrived in Suzuka, a race that marked the history of Formula 1, perhaps the most famous of the whole career of Ayrton, who on that occasion performed an epic comeback culminating in the 28th lap and ending with the triumph of the Brazilian, crowned world champion for the first time. An episode that shows better than others the character and earthly adventure of Ayrton Senna in the world of Formula 1 is his defeat in the run of the title in 1989, where, because of an ambiguous and biased decision of the Federation, Senna was disqualified from the Japanese Grand Prix after an incident with his rival and teammate Prost. Ayrton was embittered, he was even thinking about retiring from racing, but in the end it reacted to the humiliation and injustice suffered (which prevented him from fighting for the title) accepting it in his own way, leading and winning, and in the next season he was ready to take his revenge, convinced as he was that in the end what really matters is being the fastest and the strongest. his philosophy proved right, since in 1990 Senna scored his second world title – Prost 102

in the meantime had moved to Ferrari – and was crowned champion in the Grand Prix of Japan, returning on that occasion the wrong suffered a year earlier and throwing Prost out in the first corner. Ayrton Senna won his third world championship in 1991, driving the McLaren-honda MP4/6 with the new honda V12, a car that, good as it was, was beginning to feel the competition of Williams and would suffer even more for it in 1992, when Senna ended the season in the fourth place. Williams competition and superiority weighed even more in the 1993 world championship, when Senna raced with a McLaren powered by a Ford V8, even if in that unfortunate season too there will be legendary races. Races like Donington Park, when Senna won under the rain a lap ahead of Prost. Or like his fifth victory at the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. In 1994 Senna took the place of Alain Prost, who retired in 1993 after winning his fourth world title, driving the Williams car designed by Adrian Newey, the guru of modern Red Bull cars. From the outset, however, there were some problems with the cockpit, to the point that still in the third race, the fatal one in Imola, Senna was fighting with the adjustments of the steering wheel. It was a late change to the steering column before the Grand Prix to be fatal to the Brazilian, who lost control of his Williams on lap 7 and ended his race and his life smashing at 300 km/h against the wall at the Tamburino turn. Senna was doomed: the strut hit his helmet visor and hurt him deadly on the head. Ayrton Senna died at 18.30 of that same day in the hospital of Maggiore in Bologna, at the age of 34. This completed a legendary history made of 162 races, 41 wins, 65 pole positions and 19 fastest laps. The maniacs of the statistics calculated that Ayrton Senna led a Formula 1 race for 13,670 km. And it’s there, at the lead of a race, that his fans will remember him.

“With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high.

Thanks to that triumph, by only three tenths of a second over his teammate Pedrosa, Marquez also extended his lead to 26 points. zech food mostly consists of pork or beef with sauce and a side dish. Dumplings “Knedliky” are the Czech traditional side dish made from wheat or potato flour, boiled in water as a roll and sliced and served hot. Excellent Goulash soup, which is a stew, is a must! Famous are the Czech Pancakes. Let’s try also traditional fruit dumplings “Ovotsne Knedilky” and honey cake “Medvonik”. The Czech beer is perfect! “Searching for the soul”. A motorcycle can be a unique “device” often made out of some precious and high-class elements; capable of transmitting exclusive visual sensations. Can you dig out her heart? That’s the secret!

s long as humans have been designing tools, they have looked to nature for inspiration. These technologies inspired by the natural world are a part of our everyday lives, and as we continue to understand more about the way it works, expect to see nature and animals to continue to further our technological capabilities. Velcro was inspired by the grappling hooks of burrs, supersonic jets have structures that work like the nostrils of peregrine falcons in a speed dive, full-body swimsuits lend athletes a smooth, streamlined shape like fish. Humans have been looking at nature for answers to both complex and simple problems throughout our existence. Biomimicry is the imitation of the models, systems, and elements of nature, the term comes from the Greek words bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate. Mankind has learned many things from observing other species and adapting their behaviours

for our own needs. Look no further than Leonardo da Vinci who was a big proponent of learning from nature and using it as a source for inspiration. his sketchbooks were filled with inventions that are closely linked to designs found in the natural world. The Wright Brothers and other flight pioneers commonly observed birds, biologists, researchers and other science professionals have been practitioners of Biomimicry as well. By applying their immense knowledge of nature and its inner workings to other challenges and subjects, these people were able to make connections between human problems and natural solutions that others wouldn’t. From buildings and bridges to materials and medicine, examining the design of nature has aided in the development of almost every aspect of our lives. Most of us benefit from these inspired revelations several times a day even without realizing it. Designers, scientists and engineers continue to study the complex structures found in nature to conceive and bring to life every sort of product, as for example the motorcycle parts you can see in these pictures. Nature has solved many of today’s engineering problems such as hydrophobicity, wind resistance, self-assembly, and harnessing solar energy through the evolutionary mechanics of selective advantages. Over time, evolution has led to some incredible developments, from the photosynthetic machinery in plants to the human eye. Taking a leaf out of nature’s book, scientists have developed technologies that seek to mimic some of life’s unique innovations. Imagine 3.8 billion years of design brilliance available for free to any sustainability innovator in the world. That’s in front of us everyday. It might not catch up your attention right away, it might not immediately tickle your imagination, but if you take a closer look, or better, if you just watch it from another perspective, the whole world will inspire you. And if it doesn’t, look again.
