eDitoRial The call of Africa is of greatest importance. Africa is the very essence of human nature, the cradle of our earliest memories, of our origins. Africa is the land that attracts travellers most of all, soldiers, sailors and poets, it’s the land of extreme challenges and fundamental questions about life. It is the land of pilots, who hardly know how to resist and that sooner or later have to deal with her and come back to challenge it. As in the Dakar Rally, where men and pilots have found something that is perhaps greater than themselves and that is worth challenging. enrico Barbieri Editor In Chief

Africa is a timeless and boundless challenge, the earth that generated the challenge of mankind against itself. Africa is a myth.

key note What is inspiration? We are all inspired by great art, cathedrals and the beauty to be found in so many unexpected places. Is it possible then to be inspired by the mundane? Can reliability, for example, help us think and act at a higher level?

Andrea Coleman

Co-Founder & CEO of Riders for Health

Every morning I wake up with a renewed energy to make our organisation, Riders for Health, take its rightful place in saving the lives of men, women and children living in harsh conditions across rural Africa. The heroes in the story of Riders for Health are the great little motorcycles that carry health care and services to the most remote communities in the world. And to do that task reliably they must be maintained, however harsh the conditions are in which they are working. We, at Riders, are not doctors or nurses – those are fine men and women whose vocation it is to get people well. We at Riders are dedicated, on the other hand, to making sure that the motorcycles get to where they need with to go bearing health professionals, predictably, reliably, safely and cost effectively. Are those words we usually associate with inspiration, with a lifting of the heart, a renewed vigour to fight the next battle or continue in the search for support for our work? I am never quite sure if what drives me and co-founder and genius, Barry Coleman, is inspiration but it is certainly impatience and intolerance of the neglect of those people living in rural communities across Africa. I believe that it is unreasonable and unacceptable that children – living far from medical clinics – die because there is no vehicle to carry a trained health worker to them. Imagine if you lived in a remote village with no access to the healthcare. You would feel so vulnerable, neglected and frightened. Riders saves lives by training men and women to be mechanics and stores managers! Is that boring? Yes! Is it inspiring? Yes!

Marquez went slightly too wide from that corner, “Por Fuera” retook the lead diving on the inside in “Luffield”. Then Yamaha’s rider won the drag to the finish line, where only 0.081s separated him from Marquez. Lorenzo has won one of the most difficult races in his career and showed an unbelievable determination and skills, while Marquez once again proved his talent and finished in second, even if he was riding with injury! The final spot on the podium came to Dani Pedrosa. Once again Valentino Rossi and Alvaro Bautista fought hard to the very end and it was the Italian rider who took fourth place.

“I feel like we had the same race of Brno last week because we were facing the same problems. We struggled on the edge of the tyre and no drive out of the corners and this is a bit disappointing for me because I am really strong on braking. We have to analyze why we can do a better speed in the practices on used tyres and not in the race. Of course we expected a better placement today but there’s no time to complain now: we must work harder to find a solution ahead Misano GP” – told MotoGP’s Rookie of the Year 2012 after the race.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES text: Massimo Visconti

THE BATPOD FIRST APPEARED IN BATMAN “THE DARk kNIGHT” AND WAS THE CREATION OF DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER NOLAN AND PRODuCTION DESIGNER NATHAN CROWLEY

B

ruce Wayne was born in May 1939. That year artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger gave birth to one of the most loved and envied fictional characters ever existed that goes under the name of Batman. It all started in the pages of a comic book and almost thirty years later the super hero made his debut on television. It was 1966 when the first Batcycle ever made its appearance on screen. The billionaire gentleman with the black leather mask showed us countless beautiful toys to ride around with throughout the years. His first motorcycle was a 1965 Harley Davidson with a side car and since then, the wealthy business owner pulled the gas more than once through Gotham City’s streets. Batman has no inherent superhuman powers. To compensate for this, he relies on his own scientific knowledge, detective skills, athletic prowess and powerful gadgets. The Batcycle eventually became the Batpod in 2008 but it’s not only a matter of changing its name. The evolution of his machines since day one brought hordes of fans always to scream for more. And the more you ask for, the more your visionary director will provide you. At least when the director is Christopher Nolan. The design of the Tumbler, the massive vehicle Batman drives since the Dark Night came across cinemas, was an idea of Nolan who later also came out with the concept of the Batpod. The bike has 20” front and rear tires and is powered by a highperformance, water-cooled, single-cylinder Honda engine - geared toward the lower end for faster acceleration and with no exhaust pipes. Batman first used the Batpod to escape from the Tumbler after it was critically damaged by an RPG round, fired by The Joker. Eight years have passed since the events of The Dark Knight. When Bruce decides to suit up as Batman once again, he re-appears on the Batpod and follows the high-speed pursuit chase between the police and Bane along with his group of mercenaries in The Dark Knight Rises. At first, it serves as Batman’s primary vehicle. Later, Selina Kyle uses the Batpod during the final battle against Bane’s forces for the fate of Gotham. We got used to watch movies in which the vehicles aren’t real, in most cases they’re just large size toy models, in other cases they are completely computer generated. Most of the times the results are stunning, but Batman sets itself apart from the rest. All the vehicles and their crazy manouvers are hundred percent real, all those beautiful toys on wheels work for real. They were designed and built by real human beings in order to make us all stop and stare. A quick search on YouTube will prove we’re sincere. Six models were constructed for the film’s production to anticipate some of them crashing.

In order to give Batman the ability to maneuver under low clearances, the Batpod can physically lower and elongate itself

S

ince the appearance of the Batpod several custom workshops and homebuilders have put together their own version of Batman’s motorcycle. The last one to go up for auction went for a measly $100k, that’s a lot of money but if you’re lucky enough like LCR Honda rider Stefan Bradl you might be able to watch and maybe sit on the real one any time soon. You can read his impressions on the next page.

In 2012 Batman The Dark Knight Rises came across cinemas all over the world. During the Dutch round of the MotoGP, LCR Honda racer Stefan Bradl was invited to the premiere and had the chance to sit on the Batpod. Later he said: “ Batman is my hero since I was a kid. I always loved him also because he’s so realistic. He doesn’t need super powers, he defeats the enemies using his intelligence, strength, his high-tech costume and fast machines. It was great to sit on top on the real Batpod.”

The Dark Knight Rises was filmed between May and November 2011. The estimated budget was $250 million. At time of printing the gross income is $450 million

hey say that it’s nowhere on Earth as quiet as in Africa, beautiful and tragic at the same time… Wherever you go, human and natural history come together with rare power. The story told by these pictures took place right in the middle of West Africa. Home to signature landscapes and inhabited by an astonishing diversity of peoples who still hold tight to their traditions. Facts prove that magic and music are the life forces of this land. Take a look at the masks and the stilt dancing of the Dans in Côte d’Ivoire or go to Lake Togo, the headquarter of the Voodoo cult, if you dare. And that’s exactly where we find ourselves right now. The dry wind of the Mali’s and Niger’s desert mix together with the equatorial breeze of the gulf of Guinea and give birth to the natural diversity of Burkina Faso where we set our scene. Bobo-Dioulasso is the city where “Le Ramo a Bobo” race used to take place. Bobo has a smalltown charm and its languid, semi-tropical atmosphere makes it one of West Africa’s most enjoyable stop for travellers. If magic and music are the life forces of this land, it must be also true that Speed intrigue the West Africans as well. Hundreds of participants used to compete in the “Ramo” before the event was forced to stop because of the high risks every attendant faced during the competition. No matter what, its fame and greatness are still alive and rumbling more than ever. Wherever you walk in Burkina Faso you see kids messing around with screws and engine parts testing their set ups, making the muffler scream and spitting fire out of the exhaust system. Riding a bike is all about attitude and it is an undeniable fact that these guys had their own unique style. Flying like super heroes on these 50cc motorcycles surrounded by tens of thousands of over excited fans. The crowd was so loud, loud as Laabli himself was. Laabli (the man who’s always moving) as the Burkinabè used to call him, is the nickname of Moustapha Thiombiano the organizer of the competition: monsieur le directeur! Motorcycles are synonym with beautiful girls and BoboDioulasso makes no exception either as our man Laabil guided Miss Burkina Faso, the gorgeous Georgie Badiel, through the process of becoming Miss Africa in 2004. Mr Thiombiano, a race organizer who turns out to be a benefactor and the president of the first independent radio station in Burkina Faso. We occidental tend to look at this continent only through the “Oh my God, poor them, they need help” perspective. But this is not the case, what these guys need is just some gasoline to fill their tanks and then fly like the wind showing off their super powers on two wheels. Travelling to Burkina Faso means living a true African experience with no filters, compromises or contradictions. The sky will seem so vast and deep at night and the stars will embrace you right before falling asleep. The land of music and magic is willing to show her beauty to those who dare to cross the borders. Let those wheels keep on turning and let the wind weave through your hair.

Pictured left: Moustapha Thiombiano organizer of the race and president of the first independent radio station in Burkina Faso

Although Burkina Faso has no “big-ticket attractions” it still wins the hearts of travellers. The reason are the people. The Burkinabé are disarmingly charming and easygoing. Wherever you go you’ll be greeted with a memorable “bonne arrivée!”

dium on Sunday, had a lonely race to fourth position. Riding close to the top three in the beginning after a start from the third spot, he could not match the pace of them and in four races he was fourth in a row! Further back, LCR’s Stefan Bradl and Cal Crutchlow had a fight for fifth and it was the German rider who took that place after riding right behind Crutchlow for the whole race. For the first time in 2013, the best CRT rider was Colin Edwards in twelfth place! At the beginning, CRT leader Aleix Espargaro was riding in fourth, ahead of Rossi, but he had made a false start. After getting a ride-through penalty, the Spaniard fought hard and climbed to thirteenth.

“Definitely it was the best day of the weekend for us – said the German rider just after the race. - We improved the bike from Friday to Saturday but today the team made a great job. I suffered a big crash on Friday and they had to work even harder to give me a competitive bike for the race. In the beginning of the race I was not so confident because, in the warm up lap, I was not sure about the rear tyre performance. But after a few laps I could set my pace easily and I followed Cal for the whole race. He was a good reference for me and I was able to see where I was stronger than him so in the last lap I made my maneuver in turn seven. I had fun and I am happy now because I made a strong race after such a tough week end.”

imini is a famous region of Italy in the Emilia-Romagna located between the Adriatic Sea and the hills of the Apennine mountains. It’s also the southernmost area of the Romagna, just 20 km away of San Marino which is located on Mount Titano. It’s even one of the most famous seaside resorts in Europe thanks to a long sandy beach and thousands of restaurants, bars and discos, but you can also find 2000 years of history and a real treasure of art. The great Italian director Federico Fellini was born in Rimini and it was Rimini that inspired scenes in his legendary movies. Yet still the secret of success of Rimini is the friendliness and hospitality it offers to their guests. For sure the food, like in all Italian regions, is worth mentioning! The taste of a real piadina riminese, which is a thin flatbread filled with ham and mozzarella, herbs or even with chocolate. Not to forget fresh fish from the Adriatic Sea and Sangiovese red wine! Where the sea can be a way of life, one evening in September the disco Altromondo Studios was a way of dancing, organized by LCR Honda, sponsors like Lumberjack and more. he adventure has begun in 1977, when Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorcycle in the Libyan desert. It was the time when an idea organizing a rally in such difficult conditions has come. Rescued from the sands, after coming back to France he has promised to himself, that one day he would share that fascination with as many people as possible. Sabine’s plan quickly became a reality, also thanks to that touch of madness specific for all great ideas. However, even the word “rally” is not the best one to use, as it is an off-road endurance race. Properly it should

be called “rally raid” instead of conventional “rally”. Sabine’s dream came true on December 26, 1978, when the first ever send-off Paris-Dakar rally took place. A huge number of 182 vehicles turned up at Place du Trocadéro, in the main city of France for expedition into an unknown. And it was even not about winning at all, but finishing the 10,000km journey and exceeding one’s own limits was the clue of that event. After almost three weeks from the start, more than seventy vehicles crossed the finish line in Da-

kar, Senegal. Young French rider, Cyril Neveu took a victory abroad handlebars of his Yamaha and became the first ever winner of the greatest rally in the history. The first edition of rally met with a huge success over the fans, fascinated by people trying to defeat battle with the desert. Year by year there were more participants in the Dakar Rally, while popularity of the event was growing rapidly. More people wanted to take part in such different experience, by many compared to climbing Mount Everest or sailing around the world. In 1980 Neveu took the win once again (his second from five overall), while one year later the era of Hubert Auriol has begun. Already called “the African”, the French rider won his first ever Dakar. In 1983 Frenchman again was the fastest in motorcycle category, while almost a decade later, in 1992 he has become the first ever in history who won in two different categories – motorcycles and cars. In the same year in which Aurioli took his first win, there was at the beginning a chaos in the registration office. Sabine’s idea of “to come together” paid with every type of car represented at the first stage. Even the most unexpected as Rolls-Royce or Citroën CX of Jacky Ickx… …who turned another page in the history of rally. A Belgian, first double runner-up in drivers’ classification of Formula 1 and six time winner of 24 Hours of Le Mans, then also a winner of Dakar Rally in 1983. It was Ickx who convinced Porsche into sponsoring a team and finished with them on sixth place in just the first attempt back in 1984. Dakar Rally brings everyone together, like then when almost 40 participants in 1983 got lost in the desert because of a sandstorm and some of them spent even four days of getting back on course. Founder of the event, Thierry Sabine was looking from helicopter for those who got lost and finally everyone was found safe and sound. An accident from 1986, when Sabine lost his life in a helicopter crash during a sandstorm, exactly during the rally, could have brought Rally 98

Dakar to the end. Then the race went on, but no one was thinking about the results… Somehow the Dakar survived such a great loss. It continued to grow. Because in the Dakar it does not matter if you are a leading rider, driver or an amateur. Stéphane Peterhansel who took part in that rally for the first time in 1988, exactly the same year when the number of participants exceeded the 600! Overall he won it six times on a Yamaha, then winning it also five times in a car category… and that’s all even if he was a skateboard champion as a child! In every year, when the Frenchman was getting a win in the motorcycle category, his team-manager was Jean-Claude Olivier. Famous “JCO”, as one of few pioneers, took part in the first-ever edition of rally in 1979 and then finished second in 1985. His greatest successes came however when he was a team manager of the Yamaha squad. And even if French competitors have won the most in Dakar, names like Edi Orioli, Claudio Terruzzi, Franco Picco, Andrea Marinioni or Fabrizio Meoni made Italy the second most successful nation in motorcycle category. Many consider Orioli as one of the best motorcycle rider in rallying, as he took four wins in Dakar and two second places. In 1988, when he won that event for the first time in his career, Picco was second and it was one of the biggest success for Italian competitors. The Dakar is something more than just a race to see who is the fastest. It demands consistency and navigational skills to finish it. Finish, which sometimes becomes a lifetime challenge. A “Dakar spirit” brings together every competitor, does not matter if it is a motorcycle or quad rider, car or truck driver. About fifty nationalities every year take part in an amazing adventure, during which solidarity is just as important as competition. They share the same enthusiasm, speak the same language and have the same motivation to make their crazy dreams come true. Motto of the Dakar’s founder was: „A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind”. The well known fact is that any rider once bitten by the Dakar’s bug, cannot get it out of one’s system.

The first Rally was held on the African continent in 1978/1979, with a distance of 5.534 km and daily distances from short up to 900 km per day. main rival with few tenths of a second per lap. Finally Honda’s rider caught Jorge and overtook him on lap 14. The young Spaniard then pulled a gap, but unexpectedly Lorenzo got his second wind and fought back to close the distance to rider number #93. At the end Marquez once again was superior and came home more than one second ahead of Lorenzo. For Marc it was his first ever win in Spain in MotoGP, and even a more important one, as he has extended his lead in the championship to 39 points. The crash of Dani Pedrosa promoted Valentino Rossi to third. The Italian to the very end had to fight with local boy Alvaro Bautista for podium, but also with Stefan Bradl and Cal Crutchlow. Aleix Espargaro was once more the top CRT finisher in eleventh.

“Probably it was an exciting race to watch and it was fun also for me – said LCR’s rider right after the race. - Overall we had a good weekend and a good race although I lost the last-lap battle with Rossi and Bautista but I am happy anyway. Of course I was dreaming about the podium as we were fast and consistent over the three days, but Alvaro was very strong in the last lap. After tough weekends in Silverstone and Brno, our performance is getting stronger and stronger and I gained more confidence on the bike. I only need some more experience to manage the last laps and the drop of the tyres but we took the right direction.”

It’s nice to end a race with this kind of chequered flag: so sexy! – Can not say the same for the LCR Honda mechanic wearing that horrible shower cap under the helmet – Now it’s time to celebrate for Stefan’s mechanics: champagne is not only for riders!

ragon is a region, which is well known as the birthplace of the Spanish famous romantic painter Goya. It also has one of the best cooking schools in Spain and Aragon leads gastronomy. Chilindron is a Spanish stew loaded with paprika, roasted peppers and wine. Migas is made with very hard bread, garlic, olive oil, sausages, bacon and other ingredients. Spanish Jamon (ham) and queso (cheese) are also nice alongside Somotano (red wine form the region). Que aproveche!! text: Sayaka Miyazaki

frica is the world’s second-largest and second-most-populous continent. The population is about 1.033 billion, which accounts for about 15% of the world’s human people. The beautiful continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Africa is the youngest continent in terms of its population – 50% of Africans are 19 years or younger! This tremendous country is full of history, some early evidence of agriculture can be found from 16,000 BC! Most of the available scientific evidence suggests Africa was the continent in which human life began, the oldest fossils of humankind have been found there and it is the only continent that shows evidence of humans through the key stages of evolution. So to speak it’s the cradle of mankind… Africa is the fastest-growing continent, with a population forecast to reach 2 billion by 2050. With

its growing workforce and rising economies, the continent is expected to become more prosperous. Even if Africa becomes more prosperous, the people of the developing countries are more susceptible to diseases, due to their lack of nutrients, education and contraceptives. Early diagnosis and cures are available, but diseases continue to disable and claim the lives of many, they are often proved fatal when they’re not treated quickly and efficiently. Those living in urban areas are more likely to receive better healthcare services than those in rural or remote regions. This is one of the reasons, in 1990 a wonderful organization was launched by Andrea and Barry Coleman, called Riders for Health. In the late 1980’s Andrea Coleman’s plans of founding a social organization flourished when she swapped the race tracks for African dirt tracks. In the early 70’s Andrea Coleman was a motorcycle racer but her life changed and that of her two daughters overnight, when in 1979 her first husband, Northern Irish Motorcycle champion Tom

Herron, died as a result of a motorcycle racing accident. After his death, Andrea and Barry Coleman, a successful journalist and author and good friend of Tom’s, left the motorcycle community for a few years. Working with former Grand Prix motorcycle racer Randy Mamola and raising fund for a children’s charity in the GP paddock, they went to visit Somalia to see the results of the fundraising but couldn’t reach a destination because their car broke down. In this incident they noticed abandoned vehicles everywhere. Barry and Andrea saw pregnant women in rural communities were dying in child birth because there was no transport to take them to a hospital. Children were dying of easily preventable and curable diseases because nobody could get there to immunize the children and the broken motorcycles in the near by towns couldn’t reach those dying people thus they have only a very few miles because nobody has ever been trained to maintain those motorcycles.

There was a big gap as a vehicle is needed to get the medicine to the child or reach people quick who are close to death. Here is a way of using a motorcycle as a real tool to save peoples lives. The organization Riders for Health was born and resulted in reducing the disease and illnesses by getting patients much-needed medicine. Riders for Health is raising about a quarter of their income from an annual fundraising day, called Day of Champions, during the MotoGP at Silverstone! At this auction thousand of fans get close to their favourite MotoGP stars and bid on unique signed personal items. The organization is paid by partners (governments or Non-governmental organizations) to provide and run the vehicles, as well as to train the drivers to maintain them. Over the past ten years, Riders for Health has received a number of respectable prizes. With their tireless efforts and persistent work, Andrea and Barry found a way to enable the sport they love to change people’s live, to change the world.

Some kids will never experience the joy of building their own toys. Those AFRICAN CHILDREN are tHE MOST CREATIVE INSPIRED BY THE “DAKAR” VEHICLES

n estimated one billion people live in Africa, speaking well over one thousand different languages. Together, they make up the most culturally and ethnically diverse group of people on the planet. In the past hundred years, colonialism, globalisation, technological advances and foreign influences have all been factors in a social revolution. Perhaps something remained the same. Children have always been fascinated with miniature versions of real things. Dollhouses, action figures and especially vehicles such as matchbox cars and dump trucks. Where toys and games are not easily available to children, they are made from whatever materials are readily accessible. Stones and pebbles are used in counting games, wood is carved to make spinning tops. In today’s global climate where consumer icons of the West have spread throughout the world, objects are transformed, renewed, and recycled into something completely different, such as a toy airplane or a toy truck. What was once a bottle top is now the steering wheel of a toy truck. What was a can of soda is now the propeller of a toy airplane. The detailed craftsmanship of some of them is evident in car doors that open, bicycle wheels that turn, and propellers that rotate. Throughout the world, children enrich the art of play, through transforming, renewing, and recycling everyday consumer products into toys. Italian photographer Gigi Soldano was so impressed by the beauty of these toys that he chose to portray them in these pictures. Toys are an essential part of children’s living environment. Girls imitate family life, looking after small children and cooking. Boys, on the other hand, prefer models of bicycles, motorbikes, aeroplanes, boats and particularly cars. Each material used requires a specific technique. An object made of wire is transparent, although it begins to take shape as the wire symbolises its outline while bringing to life the elements normally kept hidden. Often brightened up by an aluminium colour, the wire takes on a new sparkle, which makes it easier to decipher its complex convolutions. Cars, made of drink cans cut open and meticulously assembled, are covered in the calligraphic lettering of advertisements. Unlike the wire models, here everything is on the surface -your gaze hits the bodywork and glides across the heavy reds, brilliant blues, vivid yellows and the play of words and pictures. Based on models observed around them or publications of various sorts, or complete fabrications, some models are scaled down, exact replicas of the original, while others are evocative creations based purely on imagination and fantasy. Fantasy and imagination know no borders, know no poverty or prosperity. Backgrounds, roots, ethnic groups, languages, skin colour or country. Creativity is a gift, a peculiarity that every child got since birth, no matter where he came to the world. All the toys in these pages testify that. Let the children play, let the children dream, let them be free. 134

First aid in road accidents: a vital issue! The statistics speak for themselves: everybody can be involved in a car accident, as a witness or as a protagonist. It is a rare occurrence, yet it is fundamental not to be caught unprepared. photo: Shutterstock

W

hen Niki Lauda was trapped in his car on fire for several minutes during the famous incident of August 1, 1976 at the Nürburgring, his life was hanging by a thread, by a chance. As a matter of fact by chance the first driver to arrive at the accident site was Arturo Merzario, who in addition to extracting Niki Lauda from the car on fire, knew practiced rudiments of resuscitation and heart massage, having learned them a few years earlier in a training course during his military service. A blessing for Niki Lauda, who thanks to the intervention of Merzario begun to breathe again and thus managed to survive. Our life is not the Nürburgring nor Formula 1 but the injury accidents and emergency situations, unfortunately, are more common on the roads than on track. Which is why first aid and all safety and operating instructions have to be very clear in the minds of any potential witness of a car accident. Or of any car driver or passenger. Here’s how to intervene in the right way. The first necessity is to secure the area where the accident has occurred, to not provoke further accidents or get the situation worse with the arrival of other vehicles, and then signalling the cars, injured people and any obstacles on the road. But how? First of all by parking in a safe area ahead of the accident area, leaving the vehicle’s lights on placing the warning triangle at least 50 meters before the accident area. The next step is to evaluate the severity of the accident, the number of the injured people and their conditions. Then emergency services must be informed immediately and minutely. The information needed is: location, number and type of vehicles involved, persons injured and/or blocked inside the cars or in other dangerous locations. This information will enable the emergency services to assess the type of vehicles, equipment and personnel to be deployed on the spot. For assistance call 112 for Europe, 911 for North America, while for all the other countries just consult the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emergency_telephone_number. At this stage it is very important to properly assess the severity of injuries. Usually there is a major injury when the following symptoms occur: the casualties are unconscious,

have been knocked out of the vehicle, have hit the steering wheel or dashboard since they were not wearing a seat belt, they have been crushed by a weight or have been injured from a smashed glass or a metal edge or they have an unnatural position of trunk or head, usually provoked by a spinal injury. Any injured child, no matter his condition, is always to be reported to the emergency services and his injuries are to be considered severe. While waiting for rescue units it is important to assist the wounded, with great care and without making mistakes. Important measures will be provided by trained medical personnel upon their arrival. Only if the witness, as would be desirable for all road users, has a knowledge of first aid he can act prior to the emergency services arrival and perform some emergency manoeuvres such as removing the wounded from the car cockpit, or removing a bike helmet, performing a cardiac massage on site etc. If carried out incorrectly, however, these manoeuvres can aggravate the casualty condition. Finally, any wounded person should be moved or removed from the vehicle only in the case of fire, possibly without tugging or bending his spine. DO NOT EVER MOVE THE CASUALTIES if you suspect A DAMAGE TO THE NECK OR THE BACKBONE. In this case an incorrect handling can cause serious and IRREVERSIBLE damage. There are various feasible manoeuvres to be performed by people who have attended a first aid course: dabbing any bleeding area, immobilizing arm and leg fractures and the cervical area, freeing the victims from possible situations of asphyxiation, checking any damage to the spine and the presence of breathing and heart rate and, whether absent, practicing artificial respiration and heart massage to revive the victim. Only if you are sure that the injured person has no vertebral damage, you can put in place the so-called “antishock” manoeuvre – the victim should lie supine with raised legs in order to send more blood to the brain. You must also cover the casualty with a garment in order to prevent the cooling of the body. Even if we hope never to be in the condition to use them, first aid courses are very important to learn the basic manoeuvres to be carried out in the presence of seriously injured people. It is a matter of life or death, and thus of road safety.

“Behaving in the right way when involved in a serious accident is not only a duty: it is fundamental to avoid worsening the situation of any casualties”
