Fisherton Street originally dates back to the 11th century, when it was then called. The name ‘Fisherton’ came from it crossing the River Avon, which was lucrative for fishing. Apparently. There isn’t really all that much evidence of fishing anymore.
To make this panorama, I walked down the street taking a photo every 6 steps. It seemed to take a long while getting from one end of the street to the other; although, that could have been because I was just embarrassed by all the strange looks I was getting. Regardless, in its original resolution, the panorama would have been 18 metres long. Needless to say, it took a while to collate into a panoramic composition. In total, it consists of 115 different photos.
Walking along Fisherton Street, for as long as I did that day, I saw things I wouldn’t typically have noticed. This includes various different underpasses beneath buildings and then the architecture above the typical line of sight: intricate window frames or patterns in the brickwork.
Despite always living in Salisbury, I know relatively little about its history. I found it interesting stumbling across small little factoids during the creation of this book. fishertonstreet.co.uk is a ‘club’ of small, independent business along the street. It was only after coming across this website that I realised that the majority of businesses along Fisherton actually are small and independent, yet all seemingly thriving. Dominos and Pizza Hut are two obvious exceptions but what would we do without them?
