Synopsis TESLOPOLIS.Online platform is a complex storytelling device, with the main intention to enable the audience to experience the potential of creative life, using the basic principles of Tesla's MIND PROJECTOR concept. We created that experience within the NIKOLA TESLA EXHIBITIONS - www.nikolateslaexhibition.com, creating an atmosphere of entering imaginary world as if we're inside of a pop-up book and film set at the same time, guided by Nikola Tesla as the main character, whose life intermingles with the events of the age, focused on the development of illusionism and moving image, through the rapid rise of Art Deco movement, that was a model for futuristic synergy between man and machines, which is culminating today in a rapid rise of AI and the need for the human touch in it. In that regard, this unique storytelling cross-media concept is highlighting the importance of IDEAS - as yet nonmaterial but most important and real generators of new life, enabling visitors to experience the potential of human creative mind, guided by Mark Twain, Stanford White, J.E.R. Houdin, Thomas Edison, Georges Méliès, Terry Gilliam, Laurie Anderson, Marina Abramovic, Andy Serkis ... to mention just a few.

1. CHILDHOOD in Lika In 1856, in the small village of Smiljan, as a story said, at the stormy summer night, under the strong lightning fire, Nikola Tesla was born. The same year, the father of modern illusionism and the creator of the first human-like automatons - Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin - had saved the French government from the Algerian rebellion, by performing an electromagnet trick on the stage of the Bab Azoun Theater. Under the treetops of a linden tree, a symbol of Slavs and a shield against thunder, visitors enters Lika, where Tesla is observing them from Samograd cave in Velebit mountain, ready to let the story to unfold, feeling the strength and beauty of Lika landscape, which influenced Tesla curiosity to research forces of nature, and already as a small boy at age of 5, to created his 1st May Bug turbine. While learning about Tesla’s family roots, his intimate relation to his beloved black cat Mačak, and the mystery of the cave Samograd, where Tesla use to spend time in his teenage years. Researching the coincidence of a 1st illusionistic trick with electromagnet and Tesla’s birth, we can’t deny that it is for the accomplishments and style of the J. E. R. Houdin, who even before Tesla’s birth, had his entire home fully equipped with electricity and who made illusionism to become a most respectful theatrical entertainment of that time, that Tesla, inspired by J. E. R. Houdin, later on in his business relations, took an illusionist style to present his inventions, and that helped him tremendously to prosper in his achievements. 2. SCHOOL AGE in Rakovac Continuing through the town of Karlovac, visitor get to know the starting point of Tesla's education in physics, science and engineering. Motivated and encouraged by professor Sekulić, Tesla decides that his life path is precisely in discovering the secrets of nature, which he decided to harness for human needs. Having seen in the lab the lithograph of the Niagara Falls, enthralled by the beauty and force of nature, Tesla decides that someday he will go to those falls and tame them for the good of man, which he eventually does. The dream of a 15-year old shall in less than 15 years become a path to the achievement of man’s greatest technological stride that has changed the world forever – Tesla’s power plant on the Niagara. Completely certain of his decision not to be a priest, as his father had envisaged, having finished high school in Rakovac, Tesla spends nine months on Velebit, communing with nature and Mark Twain’s books. Later on when he came to New York, Mark Twain became his best friend. At that time Tesla also read a recently published bestseller „The Power of the Coming Race“, written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, which is consider to be the 1st SF novel, featuring the automatons and mastering of the electromagnetic energy of the earth’s core, in order to create a civilization in which the most important paradigm is the beauty of creating and learning. Later on, in his mature age, Tesla admitted that this novel was his main motivation and inspiration to leave his homeland and search for more appropriate places, where he will be able to learn and work on his futuristic ideas.

3. Leaving for EUROPE Departing for Europe to continue his education, Tesla discovered the wonderful world of art and culture, and a newly born, nature-inspired style – Art Nouveau and rise of various „Scientific Amuesmet“ performances and gadgets of the 19th century. He was inspired by this wonderful world of Europe, the scientific achievements in optics, light, electricity and movement, the birth of the new art of photography, film and animated film through a series of different optical toys that were all the rage in the world of “entertainment” of the time. People must have experimented with optical phenomena since prehistoric times and played with objects that influenced the experience of light, color, and shadow. Optical toys were especially popular, forming a group of scientific optical devices with some entertainment value. Many of these were also known as “Philosophical Toys” when they were developed in the 19th century. That lead to the Zoopraxiscope, the first film projector invented by Muybridge, who later on, collaborated closely with Edison in development of cinema. 4. First major discoveries in BUDAPEST Tesla arrived to Budapest at 1881. He got his first job in Bell’s office in Budapest as a draughtsman, which exhausted him greatly because he didn’t know how to draw. He worked on perfecting the telephone and created a telephone amplifier, which resulted in the creation of teatrophone – an entertainment device that enabled for the 1st time long-distance transmission of entertaining “program”. In particular, that was used for listening to opera rehearsals, plays and similar events in the waiting rooms of the post offices or factories for the lower middle class and poor citizens. All to all, inspired by impressive art and culture of new Europe, trilled with the new possibilities, motivated by his teacher in Prague, where he already started to construct his AC motor, Tesla an evening, while walking in the city park in Budapest at 1882 had a bliss while reading Faust. Watching the sunset, with his brain already tickled with all the sensations and his endless researches, inspired by Goethe's poetry and philosophy hidden within the FAUST, he discovered the principle of the rotating magnetic field, after which nothing would be the same. 5. TRAVELLING TO AMERICA with an oceanliner Thrilled by Europe, Tesla boarded a boat in Liverpool and immigrated to New York. On the ship he already encountered the horrors of emigrant destinies of that age.

6. Accomplishing major discoveries in NEW YORK and NIAGARA Appalled by the poor living conditions of emigrants in New York, Tesla decided to dedicate his life to the invention of machines which would make human lives easier. The harsh life in the metropolis, that Tesla encountered upon arrival, is depicted through life in poor quarters of tenements, bringing to life Jacob Riis’ book How The Other Half Lives, published at the end of 19th century and pioneering the use of flash photography, that helped to finally reduce extremely non human poverty, that was everyday reality of the life in slums. In these poor quarters of New York, Edison is building his empire on the exploitation of many. Among many failures in his battel with Tesla, Edison also lost the battle for the light bulb patent and that motivated him to invite Muybridge to co-create with him the first commercial cinema – kinetoscope. With this peep-show device, Edison earned money from the poor in waiting rooms who, to see Edison’s scenes from everyday life or simple theatre sketches, had to pay several of their hard-earned cents. For a long time, even the technically contributed to the invention of cinema, Edison refused to show films in “auditoriums” for fear of losing control overpayment. We will see later, in his encounter with Georges Méliès, that Edison paved the path for Hollywood. In this virtual “room” visitors will go through the stories behind some of the most important TESLA inventions. One of the most important is The Egg of Columbus, which is actually an example of the first device art that Tesla created in order to sell the AC patents to Westinghouse, after which he pretty much fulfilled his dreams in just ten years’ time. A few hundred yards away from Washingthon Triumphal Arch, at the beginning of 5th avenue, was Tesla’s most famous lab, in which he gave illusionistic-lik performances for the elite. There he researched high frequencies and wireless power, and it was a famous place for its private magic shows for the New York elite of that time. Mark Twain was the main guest testing all-new Tesla “gadgets”. Unfortunately, the Lab was burned down during Tesla work on the Niagara power plant. Chicago World’s Fair, which was illuminated by Tesla's polyphase alternating current system. Tesla also held his demonstration of wireless neon lamps in a hall devoted to electricity. At this expo, the entertainment industry was singled out for the first time as a particularly important segment of human work, and Muybridge had an entire hall dedicated to his films. Wizard of Oz was inspired by the illumination of the fair. Niagara power plant, came about as a result of lighting the Chicago World’s Fair, where Tesla and Westinghouse proved they had the best system of long-distance transmission of electrical energy, earning themselves a contract for the building of the Niagara power plant. Soon Tesla performed potential of radio signals through the first public show of an teleautomaton – a remote-control boat.

7. COLORADO SPRINGS LABORATORY – the first Mars explorations Encouraged by these successes which had earned him great financial gain, Tesla moved to Colorado Springs where he built his famous lab in which he proved that he had found a way to utilize electrical energy from “the air”, and where he stuck light bulbs in the ground and lit them by wireless power generated from Tesla’ great coils in the lab. During a short stay on Pike’s Peak, Tesla received signals from space which he claimed weren’t cosmic noise but signals from Mars, which largely influenced the beginning of a Science Fiction era. At THis Lab Tesla commissioned and helped to create some of the 1st long exposure photography to capture beautiful threads of the lightening he manages to produce by his Colis. 8. TESLOPOLIS – a magical High Rise New York of booming Art Deco Entering the conceptual model of “cyclorama”, a reconstruction of the first 360 degrees cinema introduced in 1900. at the world exhibition in Paris, visitors can learn about human progress and era of Art Deco, High Rise, Science Fiction, movies and things that start to bloom at the beginning of 20th century thanks to TESLA’S AC electrical power from Niagara power station. In Teslopolis we also meet Georges Méliès, the special effects pioneer, whose films delighted the entire world, until Edison stopped him in his quest for monopoly over the film industry. TESLOPOLIS is an imaginary world of New York and Art Deco represented by some of the most beautiful New York spires, created precisely thanks to Tesla. How? By building the Niagara power plant, Tesla allowed humans time for creation and artistic growth, which brought about the Art Deco movement between the two wars. This movement left its mark on New York and made it into a city we adore today. Art and avant-garde were being born at every step. Film and music became everyday life accessories for all social classes. This incredible energy was sadly extinguished by wars, just like the Tesla’s tower on Long Island, which was never completed because the rich investors weren’t interested in what it was meant to achieve: a free transfer of power and radio signal throughout the globe. That was the pure concpet for mobile phones and Internet development envisiond by TESLA at 1900! Besides Tesla and Méliès, in Teslopolis visitors will also meet his friend, the unique painter, princess Vilma Lwoff-Parlaghy, one of the favorite portraitists of New York elite of that age. She was the only one Tesla posed only because she allowed him to ideally place the lights in her studio. The portrait is also the first one painted under the electric light, which was widely written about in newspapers at the time. But Vilma wasn’t just a good painter. She was a unique artist and an absolute necessity for Tesla’s scientific mind. They were both famous hotel residents. At the time, Tesla resided in one of the most luxurious hotels of the time, the newly built Waldorf Astoria, which set the standards for every luxury hotel of today, while Vilma got the complete floor of newly opened Plaza on 5th avenue, with separate elevator built just for her and her little pet zoo with Zebra, crocodile, cats and even a baby lion for short time. 9. RADIO DREAM – one man’s vision for retro-futuristic reality Radio Dream is the space inspired by the creative impulse that is pulsating from Tesla philosophical, almost prophetic writings of that time, all the way to the contemporary artists who found him as their essential inspiration … Here story is told around the broken Tesla’s tower, as the symbol of an idea, the idea of a free united world, which would surely have remained forgotten had it not been that Tesla, even htough he knew no one understand what he want to do, he build it so grandiose in format. Tesla knew that the time he lived through couldn’t keep up with him and his futuristic inventions. And that the ideas and knowledge he carried within, which are the foundation of what we nowadays call the internet and smartphone, will remain forgotten if he will not at least materialize it in the format of huuugeee tower. So even though he lost investors for his Wardenclyfee project, he decided to build it, as a monument and memory to all his knowledge, which is very important for humanity today in this chaotic technological galloping at the edge of self-destruction.
