IAN LAKEY ARTISTRY

Lazy Dog Art Studio located at Long Beach, showcases Carmel Cox’s unique creations. A jack of all trades, Carmel is a painter, mural artist, sculptor and photographer. Although her preferred medium was originally oils, she has since branched out into mixed media, acrylics and inks. Her paintings have a surreal quality to them and this works well with the unusual subject matter that she explores. Her limited palette of indigo and blues for night skies adds intrigue to her art. These days, her focus is on all things steam punk by altering books, bottles and sculptures. Completing a Certificate IV of Fine Arts, Trompe L’Oeil and Air Brushing, Carmel has been commissioned to paint several large murals for both businesses and private homes, in addition to running workshops through a range of local councils. Reduce, reuse & recycle:

How to be more sustainable at home Sustainable living describes a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual or society’s use of the earths natural resources, and ones personal resources as everything we do has an impact on the planet, from the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the transport we use.

It can seem difficult trying to reduce your environmental footprint, but when you break it down into small steps, you realise you have more power than you thought and there is no better and easier place to start than your own home. Whether it’s reducing how much energy you use or upping your recycling game, there are many small, simple ways you can be more conscious of the environment, and save yourself a pretty penny in the process. Remember, small changes can make a big difference.

“On average, Australians use 130kg of plastic per person each year, according to WWF, and only 9% of that is recycled.” REDUCE THE USE OF PLASTICS

GET SERIOUS ABOUT RECYCLING

One of the easiest and most effective ways we can be more sustainable is by reducing our use of plastic. On average, Australians use 130kg of plastic per person each year, according to WWF, and only 9% of that is recycled. Most plastic items take hundreds, if not thousands of years to biodegrade, and can cause irreparable damage to land, oceans and wildlife. Here are a few things you can do today:

These days, there’s really no excuse for not recycling, especially when we have access to recycling bins and regular collection services across Australia. Here are some recycling tips to keep front of mind:

• Avoid

single use plastic bags and take your own reusable bag to the supermarket.

• Say no to plastic straws. Nowadays, you can find reusable straws made of paper, metal, bamboo and silicon. They’re cheap to buy and you can reuse them at home or store in your bag or pocket when you go out.

• Avoid

excessive food packaging, especially at the supermarket. Instead of using the free, single use bags when packing your fruit and vegetables, bring your own bag from home.

• Stop

using cling film and plastic bags to cover and wrap food items. Opt for storage containers or reusable silicone or beeswax wraps.

• Invest

in a reusable cup or bottle when purchasing your regular coffees, smoothies or juices at your local café. All those takeaway cups and lids can add up quickly.

• Be

sure to separate household waste from recyclables, such as glass, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, aluminium cans, foil, and steel tins. If you’re not sure what’s what, head online to the Government’s ‘Recyclopaedia’ for an A to Z guide to recycling, reuse and disposal.

• Make

an effort to empty liquids out of containers and wipe and scrape food off packaging before you recycle them, otherwise soiled items could risk everything going to landfill. Try to save water where you can, but if you must rinse your recyclables to get rid of food waste and scraps, then add them to your daily dish washing where they can be cleaned with the water you are already using.

Photography by The Sustainable Life Co.

• Use

a tub or basket to separate and store recyclables before taking them to your recycling bin. Remember, don’t put your recyclables in plastic bags as they’re more likely to end up in there too.

• Don’t

throw your food scraps, green waste or garden clippings in with recyclables, put them in a compost bin.

Photography by Goran Ivos

• Think twice before you buy disposable plastic razors and toothbrushes. Opt for materials that are long lasting and biodegradable, like bamboo.

HOW TO BE MORE SUSTAINABLE AT HOME

REPAIR, REUSE & RECYCLE More than 501 million kilograms of unwanted clothing and 88% of the 4 million computers and 3 million TVs purchased in Australia every year will end up in landfill. It’s a sad reality, but fast fashion and cheap manufacturing means we can replace items as quickly and as cheaply as we bought them, even if we don’t need to. Here’s how you can get more life out of your clothes and electronics:

• Think twice before buying new clothes. SAVE YOUR ENERGY Government data reveals that while the nation’s capital has some of the lowest residential electricity and gas prices across the country, it also has high levels of energy use, which is not only bad for the environment, but also bad for your wallet. Here’s how you can save energy, increase efficiency, cut down on usage and reduce your bills:

• Start by switching household appliances and electronic equipment off at the wall when they’re not in use. Lights, TVs, heaters, air conditioners, sound systems, computers, microwaves and coffee machines do not need to be on 24/7. Even though these appliances may not always be in use, they are still using energy if the wall switch is turned to ‘on’.

• Do you know if your appliances are energy efficient? According to the ACT Government, appliances can account for around 30% of home energy use so it might be time to reassess your energy usage and efficiency. If you’re in the market for new appliances, opt for those with a high energy efficiency rating. The more stars advertised on the product, the more energy efficient it is.

• A simple way to get smart with your home’s energy usage is to look at your lighting. For rooms and lamps, choose energy-efficient bulbs such as Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL).

• When using your washing machine, opt for a cold wash which uses less energy. With the warmer weather on the way, avoid using the clothes dryer and use a clothes drying rack instead.

• Consider a new energy provider. Go shopping for a better rate and choose a provider that offsets its carbon footprint or takes their energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar.

Can something be repaired with a new button, zip or patch? If something is beyond repair, visit a charity store or vintage boutique before buying brand new. There are many reputable shops, online retailers and sustainable shopping outlets that sell good quality clothing and designer labels that are as good as new.

• Donate old clothes and shoes to charity so others can get use from them. If items cannot be donated, then use old clothes as cleaning cloths around the house or in the garage or garden shed. If something must be thrown out, then put it in your household waste bin, not in the recycling bin.

• If

you have broken electronic items and whitegoods, try to prolong their life by getting them repaired before you throw them away. Some charities, private recyclers and retailers will repair and recycle your items or sell them for parts, so try to find one in your local area. Likewise, some manufacturers of batteries, computers and cartridges have their own recycling programs, so be sure to investigate these before throwing items away.

Top interior design trends of 2020 2020 has been a year to remember across all walks of life and the interior design landscape is no exception. This year, property interiors have been transformed by an inspiring and eclectic blend of new looks and iconic designs that have hit the scene with high impact, ranging from minimal and modern, to retro revival and musthave maximalism. Here we reveal the most popular interior trends this year.

RETRO COLOURS & MATERIALS MINIMALISM Minimalism has been at the forefront of design trends for some time and continued to be a mainstay in this year’s style guide. We’re seeing stylish, clutter-free interiors that maximise space and functional living. A key element to the minimalist style is strategically placed furniture, homewares and artworks that promote light and enhance a home’s architectural features.

Retro-inspired textures and colours are experiencing a resurgence in 2020. This year, we saw warm earthy tones like sage green, mustard yellow, burnt orange and dusty rose make a splash across the interior landscape. These colours, paired with textured materials such as velvet and corduroy and designed with a modern twist, have seen the retro revival forge a new path for couches, armchairs, cushions and homewares.

STANDALONE ARMCHAIRS The armchair has become one of the most celebrated statement pieces of furniture this year, regularly coined the ‘must-have’ item to buy in 2020. Whether it’s one chair or two, the right piece can elevate your living space to a new level. We’re seeing a mix of styles and designs with textured, patterned fabrics or more subdued colours paired with bright cushions and throws.

TERRAZZO What is old is new again. Terrazzo is a stylish, 16th-century Italian flooring look that has made a big comeback this year. This composite material carefully combines marble offcuts with cement and is a sustainable, durable and easy-to-maintain flooring alternative. Terrazzo comes in bespoke colours and compositions and has the power to complement the look and feel of any interior space, whether living, kitchen or bathroom.

MIX ‘N’ MATCH PATTERNS & TEXTURES Clashing patterns and mis-matched textures became a popular and effective choice for interior design in 2020. This year we saw prints such as spots, stripes, floral, animal print and geometric shapes smartly paired and layered with unique textures such as wool, velvet, linen and corduroy to create a beautifully coordinated space with a touch of contemporary maximalism.

SUMMER 2021

DRIED FLOWERS

NESTED TABLES

While the greenery of real plants gained in popularity this year, the new floral trend taking over interiors in 2020 is dried floral arrangements. Chic pastels, muted grey arrangements, long-stemmed grasses and dried wildflowers have all been in high demand this year. A trend that’s predicted to last, dried flower bouquets are as beautiful as fresh blooms but are a guiltfree, eco-friendly alternative with minimal maintenance.

Why have one table when you can have three? The nested look has made a big impact on the trends list this year and for good reason. This stackable, spacesaving design can come in all shapes, sizes and materials and is just as much about style and sophistication as it is about multi-purpose functionality. The beauty of nested sets is their flexibility, where they can serve as nightstands, coffee tables as well as side tables.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SPACES MOTHER NATURE Statement greenery became one of this year’s big ticket trends, with the ability to make as much of an impact as a piece of furniture or artwork at a fraction of the price. We’re seeing an abundance of statement greenery strategically placed throughout living areas, introducing colour, texture and contrast against plain walls while adding an organic element to interior decor. The character of a plant comes from how it grows organically so natural flora is the preferred option over artificial alternatives.

This year we saw a shift away from segmented, single-purpose spaces to the blending of interior, multi-functional zones. As we spend more time indoors, the home must now cater for all needs – the office, home schooling, rest, and play – making the multi-purpose design approach our new normal. We are seeing hybrid spaces subtly separated with unique storage solutions, furniture, rugs, and lighting, while still remaining open planned and adaptable.

RATTAN & WICKER FURNITURE Rattan and wicker furniture has gone from fad to fashionable this year. These textured styles are seeing a revival as designers combine traditional materials and weaves with contemporary designs and colours. Rattan and wicker are now becoming a popular and stylish addition to indoor and outdoor living spaces in the form of chairs, sofas, coffee tables, lamps, baskets and planters.

BIOPHILIA

GEOMETRIC RUGS SOFT CIRCLES, ARCHES & CURVES We have seen a subtle shift from straight, sharp lines to rounded edges, gentle arches, curved walls and soft corners. We are seeing this new look applied to mirrors, doorways, cushions, lamps, coffee tables and in the form of softer, circular furniture. Curved silhouettes and a more rounded design approach aims to create a ‘cocooning’ interior that oozes warmth and comfort.

Rugs have always been a key aspect of interior styling, often coined one of the most important purchases because they can make or break the look of a room. This year, geometric designs have become the rug style of choice with a play on different pattern sizes, textures and colours. A carefully selected geometric design paired with sleek, simple furniture and stylish soft furnishings has the power to make a room pop.

Biophilic design is all about incorporating back-to-nature beauty into our interior spaces and in 2020 its popularity grew in spades. We are seeing biophilic elements with the increasing number of plants in our homes, the blurring of boundaries between indoor and outdoor architectural design (think vertical gardens) and the use of sustainably sourced outdoor materials in our interior decor. Biophilic elements can also mean a fish tank at home or an indoor water feature. This emerging trend comes with a range of wellness benefits including improved air quality, increased mental health, and more, so let’s hope it’s here to stay. TOP INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS OF 2020

ON THE OUTSIDE

WONDERFUL WALLS

REVAMP YOUR LIGHTING

When it comes to property, first impressions do last, so if you’re looking to sell or find new tenants then it’s important that your home has kerb appeal before it hits the market. Ask yourself these questions: Does the outside of the property look dull? Are there cracks and damage to bricks and render? Could the exterior do with a fresh lick of paint? Are the windows covered in dirt, rust and cobwebs? Is the front door dated or damaged? Is the garden full of weeds and overgrown plants? Are fences cracked or pavers broken? If you’ve answered yes to any of these, then it’s time to do something about it – and with a bit of research and creativity, they are all relatively inexpensive to fix. Admittedly, some of these may seem like they’re only trivial issues, but collectively they can make the property look run-down, unwelcoming and appear older than it actually is, which will ultimately affect its value and saleability.

A new coat of paint arguably tops the list of the most impactful ways to spruce up a home interior. A few licks of an affordable, neutral-coloured, durable, washable paint can quickly and effectively transform a dated property to nearly new again. Depending on the size of your home, you may wish to DIY, so head to your local paint or hardware store and ask an expert for a range of options to suit your budget. If you want a professional to take the job off your hands, get a few quotes before you commit to any work to ensure you are getting value for money.

Lighting plays an important role in boosting a home’s ambience and overall appeal. While it can often be associated with highend prices, you can easily bust that myth. With research and smart choices, you’ll find there are some great and affordable options available, from online and bricks and mortar retailers to second-hand stores. Remember, the best approach when updating home lighting is to choose simple, modern light fittings, which are less likely to date. If your budget allows, take your property to the next level with a living room chandelier, a stylish pendant above the kitchen bench, or a centerpiece above the dining room table. Keeping energy costs low can be an added benefit when using many modern lighting designs, which is especially important for an investment property. Likewise, skylights can be a clever way to save energy costs by introducing natural light and the sun’s warmth to rooms and hallways.

WINDOW FURNIS HINGS Window treatments play a huge role in your home’s aesthetics and first impressions, especially as you enter a room. Great window furnishings can instantly elevate the look and feel of a property, but if they are old, dated or dirty, they can just as quickly detract from what may otherwise be a very attractive home interior. Pleasingly, most window coverings can be brought back to life after a good clean, with material curtains and blinds benefiting from a regular steam or dry clean. If you’re looking to modernise or add long-lasting value to your home, then buying new furnishings may be the best option if your budget allows. Consider replacing oldstyle vertical blinds and dated curtains with roman or wood blinds, plantation shutters, bamboo shades or lined drapery. Shop around for affordable options and sales, and don’t forget to look at ready-made, off-the-shelf varieties that come in most common window sizes.

KITCHEN & BATHROOM MAKEOVER There’s no doubt that a smart kitchen makeover or a bathroom transformation can dramatically improve your property’s value as well as its functionality. One of the most effective and affordable ways to refresh these spaces without renovating is by changing the cabinetry. Cupboards take up a lot of space which means they are often the first thing that is noticed. Depending on budget, you could replace doors completely with new wood or reface them with a high-quality paint or plastic wrap. Another way to revamp your bathrooms and kitchen is with new fixtures and fittings. For high impact, coordinate handles and tapware by using the same colour, style and material throughout each space. Likewise, a stylish splashback can really make a statement in these rooms. Consider affordable options like mirrors, stainless steel, glass, or marble lookalikes for the kitchen and new or resurfaced tiling in the bathroom. Another way to really elevate the finish of your kitchen is with new benchtops. Laminate options are costeffective and often look just as good as costly stone materials. Kitchens can also benefit from new appliances. A modern stove top, oven and rangehood, a quality dishwasher, and a sleek microwave can give your kitchen – and your property – an edge when you are selling or renting and can potentially reward you by attracting more interest, adding value and helping to retain tenants.

FABULOUS FLOORS When it comes to flooring, there’s nothing more important than ensuring they are clean and well looked after, otherwise a property full of faded, drab, stained or damaged carpet can instantly ruin its appearance and ultimately affect its value. If you’re in need of new carpets, remember that practicality and colour neutrality is key, especially for an investment property. You also want to find a carpet that is easy to clean and hard-wearing. In some cases, a vinyl, tiled, wood or laminate flooring may be a better and more sustainable flooring option for the long term, especially for tenants, so consider alternatives rather than automatically opting for carpet. Like everything, affordable options are available, you just have to shop around. –
