Looking at the big picture

with Kasey Funnell You’ve no doubt seen award-winning AIPP photographer, Kasey Funnell’s work in and around Canberra. Specialising in interiors, lifestyle, and property photography, Kasey’s ever-growing list of clients and publishers is testament to her skill and absolute love for what she does. To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th, we caught up with this local industry leader to discuss the inspiration behind starting her own business, why she loves photographing property, and what’s next for her creative career.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? In 2012, my little family and I packed up our life and went exploring around Australia. It was during this amazing period of nomadic living that I began dreaming about how I wanted to live my life on our return to society – as a photographer. I must admit, I have had a love affair with photography for my whole life – it’s in my DNA. One of the greatest joys early on in my life was developing film in the darkroom. I was very lucky to start my career and photography education in film photography.

“It has become very apparent to me that a creative career can be the most rewarding job you can hope to have as long as you are true to your vision, true to yourself and your style.” WHAT DO YOU FIND APPEALING ABOUT SHOOTING PROPERTY? It’s no secret that I seriously enjoy architecture, good quality builds and brilliantly designed and created interiors. These are my absolute favourite shoots to be a part of. The cherry on top is when I can add some bespoke lifestyle elements to the environment I’m shooting in.

IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT YOUR JOB? I’ve had many amazing experiences so far in my career, especially being able to travel for work. The most important thing to me so far has been the relationships I have formed, which has attracted the right type of work and brought me enjoyment. It has become very apparent to me that a creative career can be the most rewarding job you can hope to have as long as you are TRUE to your vision, true to yourself and your style. I’m lucky that I have clients who appreciate this and hire me because of this.

WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS? I’m not one to search for inspiration online. It mostly comes organically to me. I don’t want to be a copy of someone else’s work, but I do enjoy workshops that inspire and motivate me as a human rather than as a photographer. The only other creative outlet I find equally as relaxing and meditative as photography is wheel throwing/pottery. Photography by Kasey Funnell

As we say goodbye to summer’s hot days and balmy nights, it doesn’t mean we have to head indoors. Autumn is the ideal time to be outdoors and entertain, especially since the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. Whether it’s a dinner party, a relaxing barbecue with your family or casual drinks with friends, here’s how you can elevate your outdoor space this autumn so it’s functional, fabulous and has the feel-good factor for you and your guests.

POOLSIDE PREPARATIONS A swimming pool is often the centrepiece of a backyard so it’s important to keep it sparkling clean and well-maintained if you’re planning to entertain around it, but especially so if you and your guests are going to swim – with the average high temperature in March reaching around 25 degrees, going for a dip is definitely not off the cards. When it comes to entertaining around your pool, take some time to think about how the space will be used and what type of furniture, lighting and amenities you will need close by. Remember, you want your pool and surrounding area to be inviting and relaxing so consider some statement greenery, comfortable sun lounges with colourful cushions, an umbrella, and even some bright flotation toys for a bit of fun.

Reshape your small living space Decorating a small area can be challenging, especially when it comes to storage and space, but one thing to remember is that you don’t need to sacrifice style. With studio living, downsizing, apartment developments and modular homes on the rise, now is the perfect time to explore how you can maximise space without breaking the bank. Here are six ideas to get you started.

room and give it a more open feeling is with

AUTUMN 2021

A lighter, more neutral colour scheme throughout your interior is an effective way to make your small spaces appear larger than they are. Calm, clean tones and soft, light hues will brighten everything up and make it feel open and airy. Coordinating the colours of walls, furniture and soft furnishings can also make your decor blend and look cohesive as well as make the room less jarring to the eye.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS Minimalism is key in a small room so rid yourself of mess and clutter to give the illusion of a larger space. Start by clearing all surfaces of miscellaneous items and put them out of sight in a cupboard or drawer or neatly positioned on a shelf. If you are lacking storage, which is common for a small space, then consider floating wall shelves, cubes or ottomans that can also serve as a coffee table or seat, as well as under bed containers to help organise your things and make everything look neat and tidy.

LIGHT IT UP Good lighting can make or break any room – big or small. Unfortunately, compact spaces often lack natural light due to small windows, which can make the space look even smaller, as well as dark and uninviting. If your interior is lacking light, then open up your windows by removing heavy curtains and replace them with sleek blinds. If your tiny space is lacking windows, then artificial light can be equally effective. Opt for mounted wall sconces, hanging pendants or flush mount lights, which won’t take up precious floor space, and make sure each room is well-lit.

CHOOSE WISELY When it comes to tiny spaces, sometimes your furniture can be your biggest enemy. Take a look at your decor carefully – can you reduce the size of your dining table, couch or bed? Investing in smaller, more practical pieces can give you back the space you’re after. Look for furniture options that can fold away easily or that serve multiple purposes. For example, could your dining table function as a desk, your couch as a guest bed, or could your bed provide you with built-in storage underneath? You should also remove any furniture that isn’t used regularly as it’s likely to be taking up valuable space.
