5 Australian Fashion Week trends Australian Fashion Week 2021 saw the country’s best designers come together over six days to showcase their wares, deliver show-stopper styles and set the trends for the year ahead. From soft suits and dramatic bows to forest green and every shade of pink, here are the looks and colours to inspire you this spring. Photography by Chyntia Juls
RELAXED SUITS We all know suits are timeless, but at Australian Fashion Week we saw them take centre stage – and with a twist. Soft, minimalistic suits in monochromatic colours and

FOREST GREEN Forest green was the standout colour at this year’s Australian Fashion Week. Declared the shade of the season, this rich hue signals renewal, rebirth and reflection and was used as a tribute to mother nature. Many local designers showcased the colour in their designs to reflect their commitment to sustainability and the use of carbon-neutral and recycled fabrics.

BOWS This year we saw many designers replace the iconic button or sleek zip with a bow. A mix of dainty embellishments and dramatic statement bows showed up on everything from shoes and hair accessories to skirts, blouses and on the front and back of dresses. The biggest showstopper was by designer Jordan Dalah who created a dress made of large bows intertwined to create a radical silhouette, certainly adding some wow factor on the runway.

PINK Despite green being the must-have colour at this year’s Australian Fashion Week, pink came in at a close second and certainly packed a punch on the runway. From bright neon and vivid pinks to soft pastels and every shade in between, pink was seen on everything – flowy dresses, billowing jumpers, flamingo-inspired jackets, thighhigh boots and sharply tailored suits. DRESS OVER PANTS Despite being a look we haven’t seen for some time, wearing dresses or skirts over pants is starting to make a resurgence. This relaxed combination is seeing loose, wide-leg trousers paired with short dresses, tunics and midi skirts. Despite there being no rulebook when it came to colour, texture or fabric, many designers opted to match the look with flat shoes and sandals.

When it comes to renting a property with our animal companions, there are some important laws all landlords and tenants need to know from the outset.

MAX Max is a white Bichon Frise. He is 10 years old and has enough personality to entertain an entire family of 6. He enjoys sleeping, stealing food and playing fetch, so much so that upon arrival home every day he will be ready at the door with a toy or ball for you to throw for him. He dislikes balloons, tinsel, thunder, learning and obeying commands, not being the centre of attention and baths despite being willing to jump into dirty lake water when he sees fit. He has extremely high
energy

LENNY Lenny is a Russian blue mix cat that was rescued when he was only four weeks old. He weighed only 400 grams! He is now nearly four years old but still acts like a playful little kitten, especially at fun times like 2am. He loves to be outdoors but isn’t much of a hunter. His catches include a butterfly and a handful of ants. His favourite toys are bouncy balls or Christmas baubles, which makes setting up the Christmas tree super fun. Lenny is very cuddly and loves being around his humans, however, he would trade that in for food any day. He does not like thunder, the vacuum cleaner, and not getting cuddles on demand. Although it can be challenging being a pet owner, Lenny is one of a kind and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. – Ashleigh

In 2019, reforms to the ACT Residential Tenancies Act gave greater freedoms to tenants with respect to having and keeping pets in a rental property. The change to the law means that an application to keep an animal, or allow an animal to be kept on a rental premises, can no longer be unreasonably refused by a Strata Plan or landlord unless there is a sound justification. Sound justification can include if a property is not suitable for the animal or if the animal is likely to cause unreasonable damage. The ACT Residential Tenancies Act requires landlords to advertise that tenants need to obtain the lessor’s permission to keep an animal in the property. A landlord can be fined if they fail to state this in their advertisement. After an application has been submitted by a tenant, the property owner has 14 days to respond otherwise it is assumed pets are approved and permitted at the property. If the landlord refuses the pet, they can only do so by making an application to the ACT Civil & Administrative Tribunal (ACAT). However, ACAT would likely only refuse the pet on very special grounds. They can, however, put some conditions around the pet including quantity, type, and whether they are permitted inside or kept outside only. In all cases, the tenant is responsible for any repairs or additional maintenance to the premises required as a consequence of keeping an animal on the premises.
RENTING WITH PETS: A GUIDE FOR TENANTS AND LANDLORDS

“The change to the law means that an application to keep an animal, or allow an animal to be kept on a rental premises, can no longer be unreasonably refused by a Strata Plan or landlord unless there is a sound justification.” In the ACT, if a Strata Plan has a rule about pets, then occupants must comply. For example, there might be a by-law requiring tenants to make a formal application for the keeping of pets, to be reviewed and approved by the owners corporation. In NSW, there is nothing in the NSW Residential Tenancies Act that prohibits tenants from keeping a pet, or that requires a tenant to seek a landlord’s consent to keep a pet. However, the standard tenancy agreement issued by NSW Fair Trading includes additional terms which require tenants to have their landlord’s permission to keep pets. These additional terms may be crossed out when the agreement is signed, but if they are not crossed out, they will still apply. When it comes to tenancy agreements drawnup privately or by an agency in NSW, landlords have the right to include a clause that restricts pets from being kept at the property. Like the ACT, some NSW Strata Plan schemes will have a by-law about the keeping of animals, which might allow pets to be kept with the prior written approval of the owners corporation. There is a limited list of specific grounds where an owners corporation can refuse an owner from keeping an animal in a strata scheme or take steps to remove an existing animal from the scheme. These circumstances include repeated damage of the common property, menacing behaviour, persistent noise and odour.

The best way to avoid disputes is by making sure that you understand the agreement and the laws that govern tenancies. SPRING DELI The great thing about meat is that it is versatile no matter the season, and when it comes to spring, the use of lighter flavour combinations such as lemon, mint and herbs are a must. Spring is best known for sweet spring lamb, delicious poultry, and tender game meats, so for a seasonal meal that will be sure to impress, consider roast chicken with garlic, tarragon and mint, a slowroasted lamb shoulder with lemon, garlic and rosemary, or a juicy barbeque beef steak paired with a citrus summer salad or a zesty Asian slaw.

SPRING VEGETABLES Come springtime, we often hear people talk about ‘spring greens’ and ‘spring vegetables’ which typically include asparagus, tender broccoli, beans (broad and green) as well as peas (snow and sugar snap). These green vegetables are a perfect accompaniment alongside any type of meat or fish, but also pair perfectly with pasta, particularly ravioli. Spring vegetables are best steamed or chargrilled and served with lemon zest, a drizzle of lemon juice, olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. These greens can also be lightly blanched then cooled and served in a fresh, crispy salad alongside some juicy beetroot and crisp fennel. For some crunch, add some toasted pine nuts, hazelnuts, or flaked almonds.

SPRING SWEETS The key to a perfect spring dessert is to keep it light and fresh.
