Photography by Passivhaus When building a home from scratch, there are many things to consider, from location, design and affordability, but energy efficiency and reducing your carbon footprint is now more important than ever. The Passive House (Passivhaus) concept is a new way to approach your construction in a sustainable way. Here’s everything you need to know.

15SUSTAINABLE BUILDING WITH THE PASSIVE HOUSE APPROACH

Sustainable building with the Passive House approach

Narrabundah property was completed in 2021 and won the new house category in the Canberra Low Carbon Housing Challenge in the same year. The design and construction of the home is true to the strict Passive House certification criteria, with a range of sustainable features, including rooftop solar panels, rainwater collection and the reuse of the materials from the site’s original 1940s cottage, making it a net-zero construction (or more than 100% improved) when compared to the carbon footprint of an average Canberra house. The home also has an airtight envelope and a heat exchange system that recovers up to 96% of heat and a conservatory that retains heat in the winter months and provides a space for homegrown produce all year round.

The Passive House approach is a voluntary, global standard for buildings that focuses on creating healthier, more energy efficient and more comfortable homes and commercial Thespaces.concept originated in Europe in the 1990s and is centred around a dwelling that is designed according to specific standards, primarily separating the indoor environment from the outdoors. The term ‘passive’ comes from the building relying on external and natural influences – such as shade, sun and ventilation. Each element is carefully considered in the design and tailored to the local climate and property’s surroundings.

Ultimately, Passive House buildings are flexible – applicable to any domestic or commercial building, comfortable – offer stable temperatures all year round, healthy –are well-ventilated and supply good oxygen circulation, sustainable – reduce your energy usage and carbon footprint, controllable –tailored to the local environment and your needs, and affordable – the investment in Passive House principles is cheaper than you Passivethink.House

A Passive House design aims to reduce building energy use by up to 90 per cent and keep the inside temperature in a comfortable range between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius without the need for heating and cooling systems, which in turn drastically reduces energy consumption and costs. The design and construction principles are based on science and can be applied to buildings in any climate, giving you ultimate control of your environment and reducing your carbon by Passivhaus Photography by Passivhaus

certified designer, registered architect and Canberra local, Michael Tolhurst, has brought the principles of this design approach to the nation’s capital as the owner of Narrabundahaus, an awardwinning home dedicated to the Passive House Tolhurst’sconcept.single-story

It is important to understand that the Passive House standard is a holistic approach, says Tolhurst, based on building physics and the movement of heat and moisture within a “Thebuilding.Passive House approach incorporates five construction principles that all work together to create a comfortable and healthy home. They are: high performance windows, continuous thermal insulation, no air leakage, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and no thermal bridges,” he says.

“The Australian Passive House Association website is a great place to start for resources and events. There’s a growing community of advocates who are usually only too happy to share their knowledge and experience. For those who are closer to actually starting a project, it is very important to have a qualified Passive House designer on your team from the early design stages who will be responsible for the PHPP modelling.”

Photography by Passivhaus Tolhurst says that while sustainable design can mean different things to different people, within the building and construction industry it is the heating and cooling of our buildings that is the largest source of carbon “Passiveemissions.House design focuses on thermal comfort, indoor air quality and energy efficiency, so for me as an architect, I feel it ticks a lot of boxes in terms of sustainable design,” he says.

Tolhurst also recommends attending an open house day to experience what a Passive House feels like firsthand.

For anyone who is only just starting out on their new home journey, Tolhurst says to firstly educate yourself on the benefits of Passive House and what it involves.

“The term ‘passive’ comes from the building relying on external and natural influences – such as shade, sun and ventilation.”

“This is verified through detailed modelling using the project using the Passive House Planning Package (PHPP). Unlike the NatHERS star rating system, the Passive House standard also requires ‘as-built’ verification (including airtightness testing), which provides quality assurance that the home will perform extremely well.”

“The International Passive House Open Day is a great opportunity to learn more about the approach, which is held twice a year.

The Sustainable House Day is also another opportunity, with the next event scheduled for 19 March 2023.”

The next open day is 11–13 November 2022.

Indoor gardening: The best plants for every room in your home Springtime is here, the flowers are in bloom and outdoor gardens are coming to life, so bring the vibrant hues of the season indoors and surround yourself with the calming effects of household plants. Whether you get plenty of sun in your home or have a lot of windowless space, here are the best choices for every room in the house.

Photography by Vadim Kaipov

The kitchen is one of the most used areas in the home, so why not fill it with colour and introduce some plant life this season. If you have a bright window sill and you want something easy to look after, then look no further than the aloe vera plant. Other hardy plants that are perfect for the kitchen include the English ivy, which prefers moderate light, but can adjust to low light if needed, or the beautiful peace lily, which tolerates darker spaces, but only blooms its pretty white flowers in bright light. Some other good choices for the kitchen include the air plant, Chinese evergreen, spider plant or the

BATHROOM When it comes to your bathroom, it’s important to choose a plant from a tropical climate that thrives in a humid environment. If there is a window that spills bright and indirect sunlight into your bathroom, then the pilea peperomioides (also known as the pancake, Chinese money plant or UFO plant) is your best pick. The majesty palm is another plant that loves humidity, and while they can handle low light from time to time, they grow best in sunny locations. Other popular choices for the bathroom include snake plants, fiddle leaf figs, spider plants or white

19INDOOR GARDENING: THE BEST PLANTS FOR EVERY ROOM IN YOUR HOME

For something close to home, look at native Australian plants, such as succulents, a glossy Moreton Bay chestnut, or a kentia palm, one of the most popular indoor palms, which does well in partial shade, humidity, as well as cool conditions. If you like the look of a basket, then opt for a string of nickels, with coin-shaped leaves and stunning cascading tendrils, or the wax vine, with shiny foliage and star-like flowers that leave a beautiful fragrance lingering in thePhotographyair.

For all other spaces in your home, the indoor plant options are almost endless, so why not consider something unique – a real statement plant to bring your interior to life and create a talking point for guests.

SOMETHING SPECIAL

SpiskePhotography by Alex Perri

Photography by Cassidy Phillip “For something close to home, look at native Australian plants, such as succulents, a glossy Moreton Bay chestnut, or a kentia palm, one of the most popular indoor palms.”

HERBS The kitchen is also a great spot to grow fresh herbs so you can add them to your cooking as and when you please – and they look great, too. If you have a sunny window sill, then basil and rosemary will thrive, but if your kitchen is on the darker side, then opt for less fussy herbs such as mint, parsley and chives. Other herbs to consider for your kitchen garden include thyme, oregano, dill and sage, but be sure to follow the care instructions as each herb will need different levels of water and sunlight, and some need to be harvested more regularly than others depending on the season.

8 DECORATING HACKS FOR YOUR RENTAL PROPERTY

23 8 decorating hacks for your rental property

Decorating a rental property can have its limits and challenges, but one thing to remember is that you don’t need to sacrifice style even if the property isn’t yours. Whether you live in an apartment or house, here are eight ways you can transform your new home without breaking the bank (or the rules of your tenancy agreement).

Photography by Leohoho

Like walls, there’s only so much you can change in your new rental property, but it’s not impossible, and the best and easiest place to start is with a rug. If you’re looking to cover floorboards or carpet that’s not your style, then choose a colourful or textured rug to elevate your look, which can easily be done without much effort or cost. The best way to maximise the impact of a rug is by putting it under your dining table or in the centre of your lounge room.

Photography by SchoolHouse WALLS

There’s not a lot you can do to the walls in your new rental property, but manufacturers are now offering removable wallpaper so you can easily give your interior a temporary refresh as the seasons change. Start by looking at floral or patterned wallpaper as a feature in your bedroom or living room. If wallpaper isn’t your style, then transform an empty wall with a mirror or a striking piece of art. Consider an abstract painting, a gallery of photographs, or make a statement with an oversized mirror as a centrepiece on a blank wall. Artwork and mirrors are a great way to attract the eye, and mirrors help make a room look more spacious by adding depth and reflecting light.

FLOORS

24 INSPIRED LIVING MAGAZINE SPRING 2022

Another effective way of elevating your interior without breaking the bank is with soft furnishings. Introduce light and colour with new bedding and accessories, or give your lounge room a springtime look with new cushion covers with bold colours and patterns, then top it off with a vibrant throw blanket. Don’t be afraid to layer and mix and match different patterns and textures to really bring your decorating to life.

SPACE AND STORAGE

No matter the size of the property, there are always clever ways to optimise your storage options to make good use of the space available. If floor area is at a minimum, then remove standing furniture and opt for floating shelves to hold items like books, art or your TV. Removing bulky items like bookshelves, tables and cabinets can work wonders in helping you regain flooring, while giving you more space to enjoy or to use as additional storage. Likewise, look at installing hooks behind doors, adding some floating rails and racks along walls, and utlilising empty spaces above doors and under furniture.

WINDOWS If the window furnishings in your new rental are a bit dated or just aren’t to your taste, then consider installing new blinds or curtains to introduce your own style into your home. White or neutral-coloured curtains can really help to brighten up rooms, as do blinds that are partially see-through, allowing the spring sunlight to stream into bedrooms and living areas. New window furnishings will not only freshen the look, but also hide any dated window sills or walls that you feel might need the attention taken off them.

KITCHEN If you want to change the look of the kitchen in your rental property, then a highimpact but cost-effective place to start is with appliances. Many brands are creating matching sets of kettles, toasters and blenders, even fridges, so think about the aesthetic you are trying to create, then match them with like-coloured utensils to create a colour-coordinated space. If you want your kitchen to make more of an impact, then add a large bowl or two of brightly coloured fruits and vegetables on the kitchen bench, as well as a vase of flowers to add a splash of colour. If storage or bench space is lacking, then opt for a rolling kitchen bench to move around as you need, then get some new bench stools to complete the look.

When you move into a new rental, oftentimes people think the hardware is permanent, but you can in fact change things to your personal style. This could be replacing the shower head in the bathroom, buying new handles for doors and cupboards, or installing new tapware in the kitchen. These small changes can make a world of difference to your interior, but be sure to put the existing hardware back on before you move

Photographyout.

HARDWARE

by Erica Marsland

If your new garden and outdoor area is looking a little drab, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to give it a transformation with a bit of time and effort. Start by giving your garden a thorough clean and tidy, then consider planting new flowers in existing garden beds or buying some pots, planters or hanging baskets to scatter around. If you want to create a stylish and inviting area for spring entertaining, why not consider temporary decking, some new outdoor furniture and well-chosen accessories like an umbrella or colourful cushions for that special touch.
