We have a wonderful Can-Do attitude, with numerous volunteer opportunities to all who wants to be involved in our city. The City of Mineola is committed to “Building a Better Community” to serve our current and future citizens. Some of these attributes to Mineola are: A National Main Street Program (boasting 90 to 95% Occupancy of downtown buildings), a vibrant business environment with continuous growth, a weekly newspaper, a radio station, a superior school system, good health care, a movie theater (with first-run movies and live plays), Transportation Depot/Museum with Amtrak Texas Eagle passenger rail service twice a day, Mineola Historical Museum, golf course, access to several area lakes, convenient location to Interstate 20 and Tyler Pounds Regional Airport, an excellent public library, Wood County Airport, Local Airport-Wisener Field & Museum, First class Civic Center complete with numerous RV Pads, Mineola League of the Arts, Iron Horse Square Park and free mini-train rides (second and third weekend of the month – check schedule) and a City owned 3,000 acre Nature Preserve free for all to enjoy. Letter from Chamber President Welcome to Mineola from the Mineola Area Chamber of Commerce! Mineola is at the crossing of U.S. Highways 69 and 80, eighty miles east of Dallas in southwestern Wood County. The town came into existence when the railroads built lines through this part of the state, and we still celebrate our Iron Horse Heritage with a festival on the last Saturday of September! Mineola is a Certified Retirement Community, a National Main Street City, and has a beautiful and historic downtown. We are home to the Select Theater, the Mineola Civic Center and RV Park (with a splash pad and playground for the kids), a Historical Museum, and two airports: Wood County Collins Field Airport, named after Robert Wayne Collins, a life-long resident of Mineola, and Wisener Field, the oldest, continuously-operated, privately-owned airport in Texas. The Chamber hosts a May Fiesta on the first Saturday of every May, and there are many other fun events throughout the year. Our Nature Preserve is the largest city park per resident in the US with thousands of acres in which to walk, bike, explore, canoe, horseback ride, camp, view gardens and fish. Visit our many amazing restaurants; we have everything you can think of…barbecue, fudge, cheesecakes, craft beer, fine dining, wineries, and more. Mineola has wonderful antiques stores, specialty stores, and many locally owned and operated businesses to meet your every need. It’s a wonderful place to live, retire, raise kids or work! Don’t forget all the lakes nearby to Mineola: Lakes Holbrook, Fork, Quitman, and Hawkins are all within a short drive and make for great boating, fishing, floating and relaxing. Come on by the Chamber office when you visit to get information about everything going on in Mineola and the surrounding areas. And check out our amazing bed and breakfasts and hotels for a welcoming stay, Mineola style. Take a look at our Chamber website at www.MineolaChamber.org and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MineolaAreaChamber – there’s lots to see and do here in Mineola! Yvonne Maddox, President

Welcome to Mineola The welcome mat is out and the course is calling

Quiet or lively, serene or athletic – it doesn’t matter what your ideal setting for fun is, Mineola boasts plenty of enjoyable ways for the young and the young at heart to spend their time. One of the newer and most popular attractions is the 2,911-acre Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River. Visitors who include hikers, nature lovers, photographers, horsemen and bicyclists can enjoy the pastoral sight of grazing buffalo and longhorn cattle as they enter the park. The further you delve into the trails, the more chance you’ll have of spotting some of the documented 193 species of birds there. The wetland habitat also offers numerous species of plants, as well as the tranquility and curiosities of nature. In recent years a canoe landing has been developed for enthusiasts on which to launch and travel through the preserve along the Sabine River. Also at the preserve, from time-totime, archers sharpen their skills at the park. There are stocked fishing ponds (one of which is even ADA accessible), a pavilion with picnic tables and restrooms and a brand new playground area. Plans are in the works to appeal to even more energetic people with a disc golf course being

planned there by the city Parks Board. While in town to visit the preserve, the varied businesses and chamber members in Mineola provide fun and intriguing places to shop, and the restaurants can tempt almost any palate from Texas barbecue to Cajun, burgers, juicy steaks, pizza, a Chicagostyle deli, coffee, cafes, Mexican cuisine and even gluten-free choices. Some of the other things that bring folks to town include the Mineola Youth Foundation, Meredith Memorial Football Stadium (home of the Class 3A Div. 1 State Champion football team), as well as the Mineola Civic Center, Mineola Country Club golf course, Select Theater, Lake Holbrook and the other nearby county lakes. Historic Wisener Field Airport, home of the Royal Flying Circus, Wood County Collins Field Airport and Highways 80, 69 and 37 are ways visitors arrive in town, not to mention Amtrak’s Texas Eagle that stops here twice a day. The Mineola Youth Foundation hosts the boys and girls of summer and has for generations during the summer. Meredith Memorial Stadium has hosted other towns’ championship games and most recently, a high school marching band contest that

Mineola Chamber Directory drew droves of musicians and their entourages to Mineola. The country club and its golf course is one of Mineola’s oldest attractions. While it is a private course, guests are welcome to play with members. It is considered one of the top 9-hole courses in the state. Wisener Field Airport will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary of the moment when a barnstormer touched down in a meadow on the northwest side of Mineola. Wood County Airport, with its modern-day accoutrements, was recently renamed to include the name of the long-time and former board chairman, Wayne Collins, who has shepherded its development. At the civic center, visitors will

PAGE 37

find a fenced and secure area that incorporates recreational vehicle pads with full hookups and, in the near future, showers. Mineola’s newest attraction - a spectacular splash park - was opened last year and offers play areas for toddlers to teens. A shaded pavilion with restrooms and showers, as well as room for birthday parties or other events, is being added this year. There are lighted tennis courts, picnic tables and a playground, as well as sidewalks that stretch for a mile around and through the park. On any given day you will find golfers, tennis players, soccer teams, campers and pet owners enjoying the park on the northeast side of town. The center is also the location of Meredith Hall, one of the popular event locations in town.

Downtown Mineola Historic preservation leads to economic development Mineola became a Texas Main Street City in 1989 and in 2000 was chosen as a National Main Street city by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Sales tax revenues have been up for the past several months in Mineola and economic development is steadily growing. The business community has continued to grow with new restaurants and retailers in the past year and more to be opening or coming to town in the near future. This vitality is a result of efforts by many in the development of a strong, focused historic downtown district, with over $11 million of investment of public and private funds made in the central business district. The Main Street Advisory Board’s mission is to use historic preservation as a method of maintaining a positive image to downtown, while creating economic growth for the community. Main Street is the heart and soul of a community and with the city, merchants and the community’s strong commitment to revitalizing the historic homes and downtown area, Mineola continues to establish itself as a tourist destination. One of the newest efforts is the creation of the Iron Horse Square Project, a historical railroad park

downtown. An old railroad bed has been uncovered to provide a walking trail. Plans for the railroad park will pay tribute to the town’s history, with a replica of an interlocking tower in Mineola and a flagman’s hut, but also a track and train on which visitors will be able to ride in the park. The Main Street Board, under the supervision of the city, continues to make successful strides in historic preservation, economic vitality in downtown, and a concentrated marketing program that will foster economic vitality in our community. The Main Street Program in Mineola is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished when the city, community and numerous volunteers work together to create and carry out a common vision! Mineola Main Street’s largest fundraiser is the Wine Train which has sold out each year for the overnight visit to Fort Worth. Come visit Mineola today, where you can stroll down memory lane and shop at our unique antique, collectible and gift shops and dine at our various restaurants or just simply RELAX AND REJUVENATE IN OUR DOWNTOWN!

themselves who coalesced into a strong whole, putting on their best performance of their show “Carman” to date late Saturday evening. Brannan noted, “Making the band warmup better is not going to make them perform better. But just the kids buying into what they’re going to do is huge.” The Swarm has a unique tactic to achieve this buy-in. During warmups, they separate into several smaller sections by instrument – horns huddle together, saxes circle up, percussion and pit practice – each led by a student. “That’s part of their job… they want to do it, they love to do it and…the work they can do far outweighs the directors’ in my opinion,” expressed Brannan.

costing Amtrak millions

Wood County is fortunate to host a stop on the Amtrak national passenger train line. One eastbound and one westbound train stop daily in Mineola. But those who have tried to ride the train have learned that it can be late – sometimes by hours. And the problem is not unique to Texas. An analysis recently conducted by Amtrak’s inspector general uncovered not only system-wide problems with trains running late, but an associated cost of millions of dollars that could be largely remedied by on-time service. According to a recent Washington Post story on the report, “The analysis identified potential short-term benefits of about $12 million from a slight improvement of 5 percent in on-time performance, as well as a one-time $336 million in equipment savings and annual cost savings and revenue improvements of $41.9 million if there

were more substantial and sustained improvements.” During the recent period Sept. 24 to Oct. 24, the train was on time only twice in Mineola. The average delay was 70 minutes. It was more than an hour late 23 times. Seven times it was over two hours late and four times over three hours. Its scheduled arrival times are 9:25 a.m. westbound and 5:15 p.m. eastbound. During a 13-month period, covering 791 trains, it was on time 56 times, within 10 minutes 41 times, on average 1:36 late, and 208 trains were past due more than two hours. Nationwide, the trains were late 27 percent of the time. “There is a financial correlation between trains being on time and a railroad’s financial performance,” Jim Morrison, assistant inspector general for audits, said in the report sent to Congress earlier this week. “More reliable performance helps retain existing customers and attract new riders while reducing labor, fuel, and other operat-

ing costs.” The Post story stated: “Chronically late service has frustrated passengers for years, with no significant relief in sight. Officials at Amtrak have acknowledged the problem, calling the on-time performance rate on its less reliable routes ‘abysmal.’ Officials say they do what they can to minimize effects but that some problems are out of their control.” In a statement, Dennis Newman, Amtrak executive vice president for strategy and planning, said the problem is primarily driven by delays caused by railroads that own most of the rail lines Amtrak uses. This is particularly true for Amtrak’s 15 long-distance train lines, which take passengers cross-country mostly using tracks owned by other railroads. Those long-distance trains, like the one that runs through East Texas, were on time less than half the time, with the delay averaging 49 minutes. About 20 percent of the time See TRAINS, Page 5A

Friday’s annual report on the Wood County Airport Collins Field turned into a tribute to the airport’s longtime benefactor (and name sake) Wayne Collins. Collins, the Mineola businessman who died earlier this year at 94, was notable in his absence. The crowd was probably the smallest for the annual meeting, organizers said, in part because the weather was uncooperative Friday. But in large part it was because Collins was not making all the phone calls he normally did to remind folks. “He was the full-time unpaid administrator, planner and visionary,” said Dr. John Wisdom.

Wisdom recounted Collins’ history with flying, dating to 1947 when he used the GI Bill for lessons after World War Two. Wisdom showed Collins’ logbook which detailed his first flight in a Piper Cub, and his later use of aircraft to attend clothing shows to stock the Collins stores in Mineola and other towns. Wisdom recounted the night Collins crash-landed during bad weather in the late 1960s while trying to locate the only local airport at the time, Wisener Field. “That’s why we have this airport,” he said, because Collins went to work finding a location and bringing county leaders together to support it. “It wasn't common for all four county commissioners

to see eye to eye,” Wisdom said. But Collins got them to work together. The airport board has set up a display of some of Collins’ memorabilia and plans to expand that. An even greater tribute, the Bonanza in which Collins logged 8,000 hours. is being rebuilt to fly even more. Wisdom said the airport board’s mission is to “manage the direction he had us going in…to keep the logbook legacy going.” Among the plans and goals for the airport are to have a full-time employee during the day, in conjunction with the cities of Quitman and Mineola and the county, the airport’s gov-

tion and don’t understand why the Civic Center fields can’t fit that need. The soccer association does not use the Civic Center fields for free. They pay $200 monthly to the Civic Center during the soccer season for mowing and trimming of the area they use. They say they also do their best to abide by all guidelines, but realize that with 170-plus kids, sometimes trash is left behind. They believe the use of the civic center is not looking good for spring 2020 soccer season, either. The soccer association has been told they need to be securing another place, but say they can’t build fields overnight.

Wood County “Don’t Kick Soccer Out.” That’s what the button states that supporters of the Mineola Youth Soccer Association are wearing. Parents of soccer players and community members first became aware of a serious situation with using the Mineola Civic Center for soccer when the fall 2019 soccer season sign-ups were delayed by several weeks due to the Civic Center board delaying approval of the fields for soccer use. Most supporters feel that the Civic Center fields are an ideal location but realize that it’s not an ideal situation. They need a permanent place for the soccer associa-

Mineola Arts and Culture The Historic Select Theater in Mineola is the longest continuous operating movie theater in Texas. First opening its doors in 1920, the Select has kept pace with the ever-changing technology of the motion picture industry while maintaining the charm of a single-screen theater in a small town, and that include prices for tickets and concessions. Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Hooks opened the theater as a movie house in 1920, and the building retains much of its historical style and ambiance today. In 1978 a group of actors determined to bring live theater to the Lake Country area formed the Lake Country Playhouse. They purchased the select in 1993, ensuring that Mineola would continue to have a movie theater and a venue for live theatrical and musical productions. The Playhouse produces four live plays each year – one in each season – and shows first-run movies each weekend. Patrons especially love the summer musicals and Christmas shows. The Select is also home to the Lake Country Symphonic Band, a 65-member community ensemble, which presents four scheduled performances during the year. Call 903-569-2300 or visit www.lakecountryplayhouse.com. You can also find them on Facebook under Lake Country Playhouse, the Historic Select Theater, and the Lake Country Symphonic band.

Mineola is also home to a very large quilting fan base. Our nationally recognized historic downtown offers a vast assortment of antique shops, gift shops, crafting and clothing stores, museums, coffee shops and wonderful dining options. The Amtrak station provides transportation seven days a week, and the Wood County Airport is just minutes away from the heart of Mineola. Historic Mineola Wisener Field

Airport is on the northwest side of town. The arts are also alive with community concerts in the park downtown and at other venues. Mineola is also a wonderful place to get involved in the many non-profit organizations we have to offer, such as Caring and Sharing, the Kiwanis, Rotary, Pilots and Lions Clubs, the Masonic Lodge and much more. Our housing opportunities for seniors in Mineola are above and beyond. The town also offers senior housing within the community, an assisted living center and two nursing homes. The City of Mineola pays a fee to the ambulance service which prevents residents of the city limits who are insured from having to pay for transportation by ambulance when they have to go to the hospital. And those who don’t have insurance are billed substantially less. Meals on Wheels is also a program that is offered in the Mineola area. The city of Mineola has everything anyone would want and need to relax, rejuvenate and retire!
