an impressive track record. A year after “Play it Again Sam” was often heard, the sentiment is just as expectant. The youth that was served in 2018 is ready to make their mark in District 8-5A and beyond. An 0-2 start last autumn gave way to a 5-2 finish and the Lions’ seventh consecutive playoff berth. With 13 returning starters back in the fold, seven of them for a defense that should be quick, aggressive and carnivorous, Team Maroon is poised to create their own uproar. Coach Harrell turned the key on his heralded return and the motor still revs-up. One look at him during practice, or listen-in when his huddle talks are given, leaves no doubt he’s clicking on all cylinders. Fans will observe some adjustments to the offense, which will have more pop in a passing attack that didn’t stretch defenses last year. A new quarterback will line up behind center and he will have a crop of receivers – wideouts, slot receivers and tight ends, that could become an arsenal by the time Ennis plays their first home game on Sept. 20. The offense has to replace three first stringers on the line, and the backfield will be completely rebuilt. Running the ball has been the M.O. since 2012, each autumn with standout tailbacks. This edition of the Oval E’s might see the ball in the air early to set up the run, a reverse from previous methods. No one knows who the ball carriers will be, as injuries and inexperience have hit the position. Defensively, a 4-3-4 alignment is probable. Speed will kill and DC Paul Willingham will open the cages. After a slow start last season, look for more assertion from the Lions as they impose their will on opponents.
2019 Schedule Overview Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, has the Lions at No. 16 and favored to win the district over Corsicana (9-3) and Kaufman (7-3), the top two from last fall. Which could mean their sixth in eight seasons. After opening at Waxahachie, who has claimed four-in-a-row in the Battle for 287 rivalry, Ennis will meet Bishop Lynch (8-5) and Kaufman, both on the road. Lynch is ranked No. 3 in the state among DI private schools. Ennis finally plays at their friendly confines against North Forney (4-6) on Sept. 20. The 10-game itinerary has six out-oftown games, which will draw Lion Nation to the road. A good start in September should guarantee a strong following. Recent Ennis teams, have gone 0-2 in 2018, 0-3 in 2017, 1-2 in both 2015-16, and 0-2 in the state championship year of 2014. They can ill-afford a 2-11 beginning this year. In regards to uniforms, look for a new set of grey threads for away games.
