Screen Time Tied to Health Issues Do you feel panicked if you leave home without mobile phone in hand? Do you find it difficult to sit in the house without browsing the internet on your devices? Are your children spending much of their classroom hours on tablets? Screen time has taken over most people’s daily lives, but at what cost? A 2014 report from Nielsen found that adults log a total of 11 hours of screen time per day. Delaney Ruston, a physician and creator of the documentary “Screenagers,” which explores young people’s use of digital devices, discovered kids spend an average of 6.5 to eight hours per day looking at screens. All of this time glued to digital devices has profound effects on physical and mental health, and many experts are advising people to cut back on the time they spend on their devices.

Brain damage

Multiple studies indicate that spending considerable time on screens can produce atrophy (shrinkage or loss of tissue volume) in gray matter areas of the brain, according to reports in Psychology Today. These are regions of the brain where processing occurs. One of the most affected areas includes the frontal lobe, which governs executive functions like planning, prioritizing, organizing, and impulse control. Another vulnerable area is the insula, which is tied to a person’s capacity to develop empathy and compassion for others. Research also shows that white matter can be compromised, which translates into loss of communication between cognitive and emotional centers within the brain.

Screen Time Tied to Health Issues

Vision problems

Staring into screens for extended periods of time can damage areas of the eyes and result in computer vision syndrome, which is characterized by trained eyes, blurred vision and headaches. The Multi-Ethnic Pediatric Eye Disease Study, conducted by researchers and clinicians from the USC Eye Institute at Keck Medicine in collaboration with the National Institutes of Health, has found that exaggerated screen time and insufficient sunlight exposure has more than doubled incidences of myopia (nearsightedness) among American children in recent years.

Sleep disturbances

University of Gothenburg psychologist Sara ThomĂŠe, a lead researcher into the effects of screen time on the body, says the blue light from digital devices suppresses the sleep-promoting hormone melatonin, keeping people from having restful sleeps.

Overstimulation

Screen time can cause hyperarousal, which may be more notable in children than adults, according to research published in Psychology Today. Regular amounts of screen time can cause the brain to be in a state of chronic stress, which can short circuit the frontal lobe. This may lead to addictive behaviors, rage, inability to recover from minor frustrations, and hyperactivity.

Transition from Pediatrician to Adult Care Doctor Pediatricians provide valuable health care to children from the moment the children are born until they reach young adulthood. But there comes a time in each child’s life when he or she is ready to make the transition from pediatric care to adult health care. This decision can become even more challenging if the child is being treated for a serious illness like cancer. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, ideally children should transition to an adult-oriented health

practice between the ages of 18 and 21. Transitioning to a new doctor might be difficult for young people coping with cancer. However, children and parents can work together to make the transition go smoothly, and parents should encourage youngsters to voice any concerns they have as they switch physicians. Parents can begin the transition by involving their children in the search for adult care doctors. Young adults may want to use the same doctor

Transition from Pediatrician to Adult Care Doctor their parents see, though some may feel more comfortable visiting a different practice. A patientdoctor connection is important, so parents can encourage their children to find a doctor who has the right credentials but also a demeanor they’re comfortable with. Pediatricians may refer doctors they know and trust, and that can be handy when patients require a doctor with specific experience or one who understands the particular challenges of cancer treatment. Insurance coverage will also play a role in choosing a new doctor. When looking for a new physician, make sure each prospective physician accepts your insurance; otherwise, you may pay substantial out-of-pocket expenses. Doctors can take steps to facilitate the transition as well. They can work together to transfer health records. With regard to cancer treatment, doctors will need to discuss maintenance medications and cancer therapy options that can impact overall health. Parents, doctors and patients can work together to make sure the transition from pediatrician to adult doctor goes as smoothly as possible, even when a disease such as cancer threatens to complicate that transition.

How to Prevent Strains and Sprains During Sports

Scholastic sports are popular activities. While playing sports has many benefits, including increased physical activity, that impact both the body and the mind, such participation is not without risk. Players must weigh the benefits against the potential for injury carefully while educating themselves about the ways to prevent injuries. Massachusetts General Hospital Orthopaedics says that the majority of sports injuries are a result of minor trauma to muscles, ligaments and tendons. These are commonly called sprains and strains. A strain is an injury to either a muscle or a tendon caused by overuse, force or stretching. A sprain is an injury to a ligament that is caused by a stretching or tearing. Signs and symptoms of sprains and strains include pain, swelling, bruising, and decreased range of motion, offers eMedicineHealth, a health information site. Most sprains and strains can heal completely with adequate treatment, but there’s also a high risk of re-injury. The American Academy of Pediatrics urges students (and their parents) to Voted Best Nurse make sports safety a priority to reduce the incidences of sprains and strains. · Wear the right gear, which includes supportive shoes, gloves, helmets, pads, and other pieces applicable to the sport. How to Prevent Strains and Sprains During Sports · Use proper form and technique. For those who are unsure, seek instruction on proper technique from coaches. · Take breaks and time off from sports play. Training every day may seem like the best way to improve your skills, but it could fatigue the body and increase the risk of injury from overuse. The AAP advises taking off at least one day per week and at least one month off per year to allow the body to recover. · Do not play through pain. If you’re feeling pain, take time off and give your body ample time to heal as advised by a doctor. If you don’t sit out when feeling pain, you may do more damage, and the injuries will only take longer to heal as a result. Sprains and strains are common sports-related injuries. By conditioning oneself, avoiding sudden increases in training intensity and wearing supportive gear, student-athletes can help avoid these painful conditions.

How to Find the Right Fitness Facility Joining a gym can be a great way to get healthy. Monthly gym membership fees may provide the motivation sedentary men and women need to get off the couch and pursue their fitness goals, and the right gym can foster a love of exercise that lasts a lifetime. Finding the right fitness facility is not necessarily as simple as signing up at the one nearest your home or office. Finding a facility that best suits you and your goals may require consideration of a host of factors.

Personal goals

Fitness facilities are not all one and the same. Before shopping around for a facility, men and women should make a list of their fitness goals and what they’re looking for in a gym. Aspiring bodybuilders may want a facility with an array of free weights and strength training machines, while men and women whose ultimate goal is to lose weight may prefer facilities geared more toward cardiovascular training. How to Find the Right Fitness Facility recommends adults participate in both strength and cardiovascular training, so facilities should provide both options. But some gyms may focus more heavily on strength training, while others may offer an extensive selection of cardiovascular equipment. Choose the facility that best aligns with your workout.

Amenities

Amenities are another important factor to consider when choosing a fitness facility. Facilities that offer a host of amenities like steam rooms, hot tubs and saunas might provide more motivation to visit the gym for adults accustomed to inactive lifestyles. In addition, such amenities might aid in adults’ recoveries.

Workout alternatives

Men and women who have never been very enthusiastic about traditional workouts may want to look for facilities that offer more options than weightlifting and cardiovascular training. Many gyms host classes like yoga, ZumbaÂŽ and Pilates. Each of these are effective alternatives to more traditional workouts. When shopping around, look for facilities that offer classes for people of various skill levels, as exercises such as yoga can be very difficult for novices. Swimming is another effective alternative to traditional workouts, and many facilities have their own pools. Adults are more likely to exercise if they enjoy their workouts, so people who love to swim may want to limit their searches to facilities with swimming pools.

Help Children Get Comfortable with the Dentist Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals. Parents may be unaware of the dental health timeline, or they could be reluctant to bring their children for fear of how their kids will behave - especially if parents are harboring their own apprehensions about the dentist. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. Yet, according to a survey commissioned by Delta Dental Plans, the average age of a child’s first dental visit is 2.6 years.

Help Children Get Comfortable with the Dentist Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road. · Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. · Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex dental issues. · Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa. · Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you. · Consider using your dentist. Some parents like to take their children to a pediatric dentist, but it may not always be necessary. Many family practices cater to patients of all ages, and the familiarity of the office may help make children feel more comfortable. Speak with your dentist about the ages they see. · Steer clear of negative words. Michael J. Hanna, DMD, a national spokesperson for the AAPD, suggests using positive phrases like “clean, strong, healthy teeth” to make the visit seem fun and positive rather than scary and alarming. Let the office staff come up with their own words to describe processes that won’t seem too frightening.

Support Your Family Caregivers coordinating medical checkups. ¡ Consider watchdog technology. Smart homes have enabled remote control of many household systems, making it possible to monitor thermostat temperature, water leaks or floods, appliance and light usage, and much more. Video and sound surveillance can offer peace of mind to those who cannot be with their loved ones constantly. Another option is a product called Care Coach. This is a digital tool that provides medicine reminders, health coaching, automated alerts, and an interactive avatar that can offer psychological and comforting support. ¡ Explore respite care. Many rehabilitation and nursing facilities offer shortterm respite care for loved ones so that caregivers can take the time to go on vacation or enjoy a day or two without having to check in on an elderly parent. Facilities generally have 24-hour staff to monitor residents, provide meals and provide entertainment. The change of pace can also be stimulating to the senior, and respite care can be a gradual introduction to long-term care. ¡ Embrace community resources. Seniors may be eligible for low- or no-cost services like visiting nurses, meal delivery and adult day programs.

Combat Veterans and the Threat Posed by PTSD Every day men and women in the military put themselves in harm’s way to protect the lives and freedoms of their fellow countrymen. These brave men and women pay a steep price for their service, spending time away from their loved ones and putting themselves at risk of long-term physical and mental injuries. Many men and women, even those who never served in the military, are aware of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event. Combat veterans are vulnerable to PTSD, and the percentage of veterans who deal with it each day is alarming. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as many as 20 percent of veterans who served during Operations Iraqi Freedom or Enduring Freedom have PTSD. Though it’s not exclusive to men and women who have served in the military, PTSD has long been linked to combat veterans. In fact, the American Psychiatric Association notes that PTSD has been referred to as “shell shock” and “combat fatigue” in the past. While the APA notes that a diagnosis of PTSD requires exposure to an upsetting traumatic event, that exposure can be indirect rather than firsthand. Because some people may assume that only firsthand exposure to trauma can lead to PTSD, many may be suffering in silence. That makes it all the more important that people learn to recognize the symptoms of PTSD. Intrusive thoughts: Flashbacks, distressing dreams and repeated, involuntary memories are examples of intrusive thoughts symptomatic of PTSD. Some people with PTSD experience flashbacks so vivid that they feel they are reliving the traumatic experience or that it is unfolding before their eyes. Avoiding reminders: Some people with PTSD may avoid people, places, activities, objects, or situations they feel will trigger distressing memories. Soldiers, for example, may avoid interacting with fellow combat veterans.
