SAN AUGUSTINE

Live entertainment, loads of food and lots of arts and crafts vendors help make the annual Sassafras Festival a favorite. This year’s event is Oct. 25 and 26.

Sassafras Festival a fall favorite Whether its history, getting close to nature, shopping, taking in a festival or taking a driving tour around an area lake, autumn is a great time to visit San Augustine County. Many visitors and local residents alike enjoy getting out-ofdoors at a nearby lake for hiking and camping in the forest and piney woods. San Augustine is the county seat for San Augustine County and is located on the route of the historic El Camino Real de los Tejas. The route linked the oldest town in Louisiana, Natchitoches, to the oldest settlement in Texas, Nacogdoches and served as a trade route Native Americans and settlers from both Spain and France. San Augustine is a quaint community filled with historic homes and surrounded by forests. Coming up in the fall is the an-

nual Sassafras Festival, a long time tradition. The festival features live music, arts, crafts, a barbecue cook off, a classic car show and even an old fashioned fudge contest loads of food and more. Admission is free and the festival offers family friendly fun. On Friday, Oct. 25, activities get kicked off with “Burgers and Bingo” at 6 p.m. At the Historic Augus Theatre downtown. The Sassafras Festival gets in full swing on Saturday, Oct. 26. The aroma of smokers being stoked up for the barbecue cook off starts early on Saturday of the festival with categories of beef, pork and chicken all being judged. As October eases into November, the San Augustine area provides visitors with fall foliage sights to behold as nature along the hills, valleys and stream beds takes on a different hue.

Santa will be available for pictures during this event and the Lamp-Lite Theatre will be performing three live shows of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.”

History year round

While special events draw visitors, guests can get a glimpse of what life was like in East Texas more than a century ago throughout the year at Millard’s Crossing. Executive Director Jessica Pinkert said the site is popular with school groups who are intrigued with demonstrations like making butter, doing laundry with a washboard, writing school papers with quill pens. Among the attractions is the 1837 Millard-Lee House,

which was built as a family home and boarding house and offers a rare East Texas example of the two-story double house style in which one side is a mirror image of the other. The structure is a Texas Medallion Structure and is furnished with a collection of 19th century antiques. The old fashioned oneroom log school house offers a glimpse of what classroom life was like decades ago. A typical 19th century East Texas mercantile store has been replicated on the grounds of Millard’s Crossing. Such stores had a little of everything and provided services like a bath, haircut or shoe shine along with merchandise like food. The double corn crib originally had no chinking between the logs so circulating air would keep the air dry while it was being stored.

The recently renovated but historic Fredonia Hotel in Nacogdoches is the location for Holiday in the Pines set for Nov. 21-23.

Holiday in the Pines set Nov. 21-23 Holiday in the Pines is a collection of more than 60 specialty stores and shops from coast-tocoast gathered for holiday shopping in a festive atmosphere in historic Nacogdoches. This year’s Holiday in the Pines will be held Nov. 21-23. Located in the newly renovated Fredonia Hotel, the event space is transformed into a holiday wonderland. nizations throughout the county. Visit the Nacogdoches Junior Forum website for more information about our services, grants and Holiday in the Pines — www. nacjrforum.org/ Nacogdoches Junior Forum was formed through the interest of a small group of active, young Nacogdoches women. Nurtured by the friendship of Judy Hale and Ann Ethridge, membership chairmen for Junior Forums Incorporated, Nacogdoches Junior Forum began to grow. Of primary importance was the evaluation that young women in Nacogdoches had the desire to give time and effort involved in creating and supporting an organization whose purpose was… SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY.

History, nature merge in Nacogdoches There’s probably no better place to get to the roots of Texas history than in the oldest town in Texas — Nacogdoches. While glimpses of history are at nearly every corner of the historic brick streets downtown to Millard’s Crossing, which features a reconstructed historic village situated on the north side of the city, a visit to Nacogdoches is much more than history. But Nacogdoches is much more, with natural beauty, sea-

sonal festivals and events, hiking trails and live entertainment opportunities, the city is filled from charm. Nacogdoches is filled with photo opportunities and so many reasons to come back to see the city again. Unique shopping opportunities, an opportunity to stay in a recently restored mid-20th Century hotel and mother nature all around make Nacogdoches a great place for a fall getaway. ••••

This year’s Henderson Syrup Festival is Saturday, Nov. 9.

A sticky, sweet and fun event set By Shannon James

An estimated crowd of 20,00025,000 will travel from cities around the state of Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, as well as other states to enjoy the “Sweetest Festival in Texas,” the 31st Annual Heritage Syrup Festival, in Henderson on Nov. 9, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The Syrup Festival activities will be in two places; the Depot Museum; 514 N. High St. located on 5 acres, and the Downtown Heritage Square, which is located in the National Register Historic District. Organizers said there will be hayrides between the two locations.

At the Depot Museum The tradition of ribbon cane syrup making will commemorate the 29th Annual Heritage Syrup Festival. The highlight of the only “folklife festival in East Texas” is the syrup making demonstration on the Depot Museum grounds. Experienced syrup makers will operate the museum’s antique mule powered syrup mill to produce “old fashioned” cane syrup. While the syrup cooks, folk artists demonstrate the techniques of lace making, rope making, basket making, blacksmith demonstration, wood carving, quilting, broom making and other old-time survival skills.

Page 30 – East Texas Fall and Winter Fun Guide
