Kingdom Zoo Wildlife Center founder Chester Moore. “It will be a chance to see what we have going on at our facility in Pinehurst and also how we use the animals to reach hurting children through our programs,” Moore said. His wife and co-founder Lisa said their nonprofit in 2019 alone visited with more than 4,000 kids in the area and just completed its 100th Wild Wish. Wild Wishes® is their program that grants exotic animal encounters to children who have a terminal illness or have lost a parent or sibling. “Encounters with these amazing animals do something special for the children. It breaks through emotional barriers and allows to bring them a powerful Christcentered message of hope,” she said. Lisa said they are inviting kids to come out in costume and there will be a costume contest and very special prizes for the winner. “We want this to be a fun day and something unique for the community with the combination of fall festival tradition and our animals.” For more information go to Kingdom Zoo Wildlife Center on Facebook or text us at 409-920-2063.

HURRICANE

HARVEY

Remembering what’s important by Kathy Odom

A little over two years ago Hurricane Harvey blew in with a vengeance. With no regard for life or property, Harvey wreaked havoc upon our community and abroad bringing with it damaging winds and torrential rainfall like we had never experienced before and pray will never have to again. We were warned of it’s coming, we prepared as much as we could but in reality we had no Earthly idea the massive destruction that was about to take place. As Harvey blew in and the rains came down, we all watched in unbelief as the waters rose higher and higher. Our homes and possessions we worked so hard our entire lives for were in danger. Some of us found ourselves in life threatening conditions as the flooding quickly climbed to unprecedented levels. We were in trouble. Harvey left most of us in our community devastated, some of us homeless, and all of us with a deep sense of sadness for our losses, our families and neighbors. Indeed Harvey has made a lasting impression in our area. Some that found U.S. Army National Guard photo by Staff the devastation Sgt. Balinda O’Neal too hard to recovDresel er from moved on to rebuild their lives somewhere else. But for many of us this is home, no matter what, this is home. So we did what we had to do. We shed our tears, said our prayers, took a deep breath, rolled up our pants legs and started to work. The road to recovery has been a long and difficult one and in many cases is still ongoing and we are still trying to finish up this chapter and move forward with our lives. As I drive down the roads in my neighborhood today, I see the nice, comfortable home places that once stood now replaced with remodeled and even more beautiful homes than before. Though there are still homes whose fate is questionable, I would have to say my neighborhood has

recovered well and I see it all over our community. We are recovering. I’m sure that history has recorded Harvey’s legacy as one of epic proportion, full of destruction and tragedies. All the above statistics and more will be there to read for generations to come. Hurricane Harvey will become just one of hundreds of historical events of the past. We have definitely earned our place in history. But what about the good that happened in the midst of all this? Yes, there were so many touching and heroic events that took place during

Recapping Hurricane Harvey’s statistics:* • Produced over a year’s worth of rain in just a few short days with 27 trillion gallons of rain falling over Texas and Louisiana alone. • Governor of Texas declared state disaster for 30 counties. • Forced 37,000 people in Texas into shelters. • 13 million people affected in TX, LA, MS, TN & KY. • Over 200,000 homes damaged or destroyed with 3/4 of them outside the 100 year flood plain - many having no flood insurance. • 13.13 Million cubic yards of debris had to be disposed of. • 1 Million cars ruined beyond repair. • $125 Billion in damages ranking 2nd behind Katrina in worst natural disasters in U.S. history. • Death toll 68 (direct effects) to 103 (indirect effects). *Statistics gathered from various Internet informational sites.

this tragedy. For some reason when tragedy strikes, we can for a short while forget our differences and indifferences and connect to our more humane and compassionate side. We forgo the dangers to save someone, we forget our needs to go help our neighbors, we become united again. So who will remember the good? It will be up to us, the real life characters in this story, to remember, tell and tell again the stories of the people that turned a community in turmoil into a community of love. So let us make sure that the story of Hurricane Harvey, told in our own words, is a story of triumph that just so happened to take place during a national disaster.

UPDATE:

IT HAPPENED AGAIN! Tropical Storm Imelda has hit us hard and I am seeing the same acts of kindness and compassion everywhere.

Potty Training Your Puppy Happy Tails Training by Lori 409-988-2575 or 409-673-4505

Potty training your pup can be frustrating. We at Happy Tails Training & Grooming by Lori have put together a few tips that may help you get your sweet puppy on the right track. If you need any other assistance, please give us a call. • Give your puppy 30 minutes to eat and then pick up his food. Wait roughly 30 minutes and take him outside to do his business. Try to feed at the same time each day. • Put a bell on a string and tie it to the door that you take him in and out of. Each time you take him outside, take his paw and hit the bell. He will start to realize that if he rings the bell he can go outside. • Crating your puppy at night will help potty train him. Get a crate that is just big enough for him to go in and turn around in. Usually puppies will not potty where they sleep. • Take your puppy out and exercise him (toss a ball around). Exercise will usually get his bowels to move. • If he uses the bathroom in your house, collect it and take it outside. Put it where you want him to use the bathroom. When it is time for him to “go” again, take him to that area outside and let him sniff. Usually he will go where he smells his own bowels and urine. • Always take him outside before he is crated at night and as soon as he wakes up in the morning.

Hello, My name is Kinslee Bruno. I have a dog named T-Bone. He lives inside. I have been wanting a dog who can play with me outside a lot. We just bought 30 acres. Just a couple of days ago was my birthday and I got a puppy named Cane.

He’s a Blue Healer. He will come in handy with the cattle and I’m going to train him to be a farm dog.

We love stories! If you would like to write a “Pet-Time” story, please email us at setxPetGazette@yahoo.com. If we decide to use your story, we will contact you. Drones Being Used to Find Stray Dogs Drones are low-cost remote controlled flying machines. They are rapidly growing in popularity and more and more businesses are starting to realize their potential. One area they are showing great promise in is tracking. They have the capability of reaching remote areas with little to no manpower and can do it faster making it a great rescue tool. With high resolution camera systems, they can sometimes capture what human eyes may miss. In Houston, the World Animal Awareness Society plans to use them to track stray dogs, combining a drone’s utility as a mapping device with its rescue abilities. Mapping, counting, and tracking stray dogs before the advent of drone technology would have been impossible in such a vast city as Houston. For this project, volunteers enter information about the strays into a smartphone app, noting, for example, if the dog is male, female, a lactating female, a puppy, or unknown. Drones flying overhead will film dogs, guiding volunteers to strays they might not see and recording on film where the dogs currently are.

A surfer narrowly escapes death. While conquering the waves, Todd Endris, a professional surfer, was attacked by a great white shark. The shark was over 16 ft long. After several attempts to get away from the deadly predator, Todd was growing weary and losing his ability to keep fighting. Then an amazing thing happened when out of nowhere a group of dolphins came to his rescue. These dolphins circled around Todd forming a protective ring and keeping the fierce shark at a distance. These amazing dolphins became his unexpected heroes. They stayed with Todd and accompanied him to the shore where he was able to get first aid for his injuries.

The Moore’s share their love and knowledge of animals with children throughout our area, taking many of their unusual creatures to schools, churches and other area events. Kingdom Zoo also spends their time working with other highly respected organizations in our area such as Buckner Children’s Village, Boy’s Haven, Girl’s Haven and more. Chester has a heart for children and he realized first hand the impact these special animals had on children. It is from this realization that he and Lisa found a way to bring their love for animals, children and God all together under one amazing program and began their flagship program Wild Wishes®. This is a non-profit organization that grants wildKingdom Zoo Wildlife Center founder Chester Moore and 14-yearlife encounters for children who have a terminal or critical old Emily, the fifth (out of 100) young person that entered the Wild illness or have lost a parent or sibling. Chester and Emily had just finished shooting a video about wild sheep conservation using these babies as ambassadors. A new part of the program is training kids who go through Wild Wishes to be wildlife conservationists.

of his interesting and exotic animals with the public during his speaking engagements, but some are so “special” they are only reserved for their “special” kids in the Wild Wishes® program. Chester says “When kids encounter these animals it opens them up to being a kid again and can begin a journey of healing. When you see a kid’s life transformed, it’s all worth it.” Wild Wishes come true! They recently granted their 100th wish for a sweet, smart, full of life young lady named Tara. They are excited to have her in the family and are blown away the Lord has allowed them to do 100 wishes so far. They have also incorporated a new mentoring program for their “wish kids” teaching them to become what they call “World Wildlife Champions”. Some of their kids have been part of the program for an extended time and have volunteered as interns during the summer. During their internship they train to be conservation ambassadors and learn the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation and how to raise awareness and funds for wildlife. They learn wildlife photography, how to handle ambassador animals, how to talk on camera and produce social media to help endangered wildlife and habitat. Chester says “Safe, interactive wildlife encounters are crucial to inspiring people to appreciate wildlife and become advocates for species and habitat conservation”. Some of their former “special” children in the Wild Wishes® program have truly fell in love with their vision. Reannah, now in college, changed her college major to wildlife conservation and Lauren is getting an education degree to become an elementary teacher. Chester and Lisa believe they will have a major impact on wildlife and wildlife education in the future and they are proud that these experiences have been a catalyst in inspiring them. Times are changing. In a technology-driven world where man seems to get more disconnected to nature by the day, opportunities like this can cause one to pause and ponder Creation. The Kingdom Zoo and Wild Wishes® are truly wonderful programs doing wonderful things in our community and abroad. Chester and Lisa say they feel hugely privileged to be a part of this remarkable journey. Their organization is growing because of the care and generosity of others. It is through contributions they are able to continue to bring healing to hurting children. If you want to learn more about Chester and Lisa’s amazing animal programs, visit ChesterMoore.com. Be sure to check out their Facebook page for lots of heartwarming stories and while you’re there, watch the video to find out why you see Chester wearing a zebra striped bandana almost everywhere he goes! All donations are greatly appreciated and will be used to continue to support their wonderful mission.

A pair of green-naped lorikeets are favorites of kids who visit the facility. Robin, one of the Wild Wishes kids named the pair “Rose” and “Rosie.

Wild Wishes girl Destiny had a blast feeding the sulcata tortoises on her encounter day.

Remingtyn Russell was one of the early young people to come through the Wild Wishes program. When time allows she volunteers for the program and enjoys the creatures like this hedgehog named “Capt. Jack”.

These are the kind of stories I love to write about. It is truly heartwarming to know that such an important work is alive and growing so close to home. Thank you Chester for allowing me the honor of sharing your amazing story with our community. PET GAZETTE • FALL 2019

- August 22 “BFF Pet Playhouse is a awesome facility, unlike most boarding kennels it has a very homey feel to it. It is extremely clean and the owner does not mind for her customers to see the area where their pup will stay. I absolutely recommend.” - September 21 “My son and his girlfriend went out of town and left their dogs there. I was able to go visit and check on them. Wanda even sent pictures of them playing. This is truly the best place to board dogs that I’ve ever seen. Highly recommend it. Wanda is the best!!”
