PROJECT UPDATE Great news! Our retention pond has been built. By the time that you read this article, the stand and water tank should be in place and we will be ready to capture water for the garden projects. The pond will start capturing water as soon as we get some much needed rain. We are looking forward to having water, which is an absolute requirement for any garden. If you one of the individuals or organizations that have indicated you will donate trees/plants, etc. and

if these plants can be planted in the fall vs spring, please contact me so we can determine where your plants/ trees should l go. Thank you for all your patience and so sorry that this has taken so long to get to this stage. As you will see, we have not given up!! If you would like to be involved with the project, we do need additional support. Please feel free to contact me. Joan McEntyre, 254-729-6123, jmcentyre@ilsainc.com

“Mom, what’s for dinner?” The four little words that I despise! I won’t lie, I do not like to cook. I am not good at it, nor do I care to be good at it. But apparently it’s important for my family to eat. Eating out is very expensive, especially when you have a family of six kids! That means I must cook. Ugh. Over the years (what honestly feels like a thousand years in cooking time) I have learned a few shortcuts. And I LOVE cooking shortcuts! If you’re like me and despise cooking, I hope these shortcuts help you as much as they have helped me.
Shortcut #1 - Plan a Menu Planning a menu makes me only think about cooking dinner ONCE a week rather than seven days a week. This makes the other six days much more pleasurable! I actually bought a magnetic menu board that is on our refrigerator so every single person in the house can easily answer the dreaded mom question of “What’s for dinner?” And just like that, the kids stopped asking me this question at noon every single day of every single week of every single month of every single year.
Shortcut #2 - Online Grocery Shopping Online grocery shopping is an absolute lifesaver! Seriously. If you haven’t tried it, you are missing out. I didn’t jump on this trend as soon as it emerged. I like being in control and felt like the shoppers wouldn’t select the correct items. One day I decided to try it and that is the day my grocery shopping habits changed forever! Not only am I saving lots of time, but I am saving lots of money since I’m no longer roaming around the store adding things to my cart that I don’t need, like cookies. I am also saving my sanity. With six kids, that means I never go to the grocery store alone. And when kids go to the grocery store, they always ask for a gazillion things they don’t need.
Groesbeck Magazine .indd 5
Shortcut #3 - Instapot I purchased our Instapot earlier this year when I found a great sale that I couldn’t pass up. I have been hearing about how great these magical cookers are, but was honestly scared of it blowing up and burning my family with scalding food. A tad irrational I know, but those scary stories get posted on Facebook and they must be true, right? But the price was right, so why not give it a try! Let me tell you, that thing is one fantastic invention! It saves so much time with cooking and cleanup and everything we have made in it has been delicious. Just last night I made a tender roast in just 90 minutes with literally three minute of prep time which consisted of removing the packaging from the roast and opening a few cans. No other pots or pans were used either which made clean up a breeze!
Recipe: Lazy Mom’s Roast Buy a roast, any cut you’d like. Buy two or three cans of Campbell’s Beefy Mushroom Soup. Remove the packaging from the roast and put the roast into the Instapot. Open the cans of soup and pour them over the roast. Use either two or three cans, enough to cover most of the roast. You can add some water if you’d like, but I prefer it with just soup. Cook in the Instapot for 90 minutes. Let the steam release naturally. Enjoy with mashed potatoes and your favorite vegetables. By Anna Smith Photography

One of the most powerful marketing tools available to any business is Social Media. Thanks to smartphones, social media is in the hands of nearly every citizen between 10 and 60 years old. That’s a pretty excellent customer pool to be swimming in. Better yet, IT IS FREE! Before you go out and start creating social media profiles everywhere, let me caution you about the necessity of keeping your business profiles utterly separate from your individual profiles. Trying to market your business primarily on your personal profiles is the marketing kiss-of-death. I cannot stress this enough; do not mix business with pleasure on social media! Prepping for Social Media Brand Building: Gather the items you need BEFORE you get started on any social business page: • Good photos of your storefront or best display area • Logo – do you have one? (there are logo making apps and websites) • Good pictures of your essential products or
Groesbeck Magazine .indd 8
pictures of your services being provided • Draft a short description of your business, what you sell or services you provide (about 50 words - see Facebook for character count) • Your website address (if you have one) • A Short Mission Statement - your promise to your customers • Your contact numbers • Business hours • Start With Facebook • Facebook can be a small business owner’s best friend. A Business Page on Facebook is entirely different from a standard profile. It is searchable in different ways, and offers so many tools to help you spread the word about your business to your primary customer base. Facebook is the fastest growing marketing platform for local companies. One of my favorite tools for Facebook is Events. If you are having a sale or any activity that can draw people to your business, create an Event on Facebook. Events show up in searches by locals who may not be following your page. When people are
10/17/19 1:57 PM
www.groesbeckchamber.com 9 looking through Facebook, they may stumble across a suggested list of “Events near you.” The best part is that when anyone toggles the interested or going button on your event, their followers can see that. People can share your event on their personal feed and grow your audience, exponentially. Facebook also allows your business page to interact directly with customers via the Messenger App. You can text with customers without having to give out a personal mobile number. You can even set up marketing messages to send to select customers by creating groups in Messenger. This app is free! I caution you again about keeping personal separate from professional, even in Messenger.
Let’s Tweet! Twitter is a terrific tool for local marketing. By creating a profile for your business, you can tweet about sales, special events, holidays or closings, etc. One of my favorite Twitter stories is about how it helped the Food Truck Industry take off. Food Truck owners were early to discover the commercial use for Twitter. They created a profile for their business, invited customers to follow them for deals and specials, and for the address of where they were going to be set up on specific days. They would tweet their address and the meals of the day and often gave out secret codes to use to get discounts or free stuff. Brilliant marketing! Set up Twitter and be sure to post a few times per week, create hashtags (#s) that are unique to you. Hashtags are searchable across all social media platforms, but Twitter made them famous for the masses. Use hashtags that you can use over and over, make it easy for people to identify you, make them part of your brand. #youcandothis
Instagram – It’s Not Just for Food Pictures and Yoga Poses at the Beach! Instagram is primarily for sharing images and videos (IGTV), and there is no desktop version. This social network is a smartphone or tablet platform only. Businesses can use Instagram to share pictures of their goods or post images of things that are positive or celebratory. Instagram is also reliant on a strong hashtag game. Some people make tons of money by having massive followers who cannot wait for the next image and hashtag string.
Groesbeck Magazine .indd 9
Instagram is so popular that apps have been created to make it easier for you to create compelling images, and get your message out there. Canva, WordSwag, and Spark Post are three of my favorites (these platforms also let you create perfect images for Facebook & Twitter, too). There are online tutorials that will teach you how to use Instagram for your business; check out YouTube for different ideas; they are free.
LinkedIn – Sell Yourself LinkedIn used to be the place where you put up your profile, hoping that a corporate headhunter would scout you for that dream job in the big city. It is still for that, but it has grown into a network of professionals who can connect with you and help you take your business to the next level. This network is especially crucial if you want to expand your business into other cities, or marketplaces. LinkedIn lets you showcase your knowledge and skills - who you are and what you know – to other professionals who may be looking for collaboration, partnerships, or information. You can have a personal profile, complete with job history and skills, and a Corporate Page for your business or organization. LinkedIn is more like the older, more serious brother of social networks. It is not a place for silliness and cat pictures if you know what I mean. It’s a great place to interact and connect with others in your industry.
“A rising tide lifts all the boats.”- JFK Bonus Tip: Join Your Local Chamber of Commerce! Become a member of your local Chamber of Commerce. Their business is to help you grow your business. You need to be a part of that. Connect with them on social media and let them share your events and your business news. The Chamber is full of other local business owners and professionals. That’s fantastic company to keep. Stay Tuned to the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce and Follow us on Facebook, and let’s start collaborating on how to make your business a success. Also, the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce will soon be hosting social media workshops to help you increase your advertising game. I hope I see you there! #GrowGroesbeck

HeritaGe festival in 2020 The community of Groesbeck has scheduled its first Heritage Festival for May 29-31, 2020. Rich in history and historical events, this first festival is in preparation for an even larger event in 2021 to celebrate our 150th anniversary. Organizations throughout the city will take part in activities and entertainment that begin on Friday evening, continue all day Saturday and end on Sunday afternoon. A meeting of interested organizations was held at the Groesbeck Convention Center on Oct. 1. The vision has been under consideration for some time and a plan that includes proposed activities, events and entertainment was presented and discussed along with other suggestions as the meeting progressed. Many organization representatives voiced support and selected activities or events they would like for their organization to
sponsor. Any who were unable to attend this first meeting are urged to attend future meetings to ensure that everyone and every organization is represented and takes part in this event. Authentic dress, musical entertainment, games, cook offs and crafts are just a few of the many activities and contests planned with a long list of entertainment for the children. A complete list with sponsors will be available soon. For more information contact: Joan McEntyre – 254-729-6123 Larry Smith – 817909-707Scooter Kennedy – 254-729-3894
