'Tis the season for

Sweaters and Dresses! By the Audacious Boutique Girls

F

or many people, the holiday season means a full social calendar. If this is you, you have probably struggled with what to wear to a variety of events. No one wants to be under- or overdressed for the occasion. Here are some tips to help you rock this winter in style. You may think that you can't wear the same outfit for a holiday party and to your family’s Thanksgiving. You are mistaken! When sitting for long periods, comfort is key. An oversized sweater, nice jeans, a scarf and some stylish flats make the perfect family 4

dinner outfit. After dinner, you’ll likely be ready for a night away from the kids (and the in-laws). Trade those flats for some ankle booties and that scarf for statement earrings, and you are ready to party! Another must for the holiday season is having family photos taken. Whether those pictures adorn a customized Christmas card or a grandmother’s mantel, it is important to coordinate outfit colors. When putting together family photo outfits, you want to match without being too matchy-matchy. A good way to do this is to have a variety of colors that look good together rather than having everyone wear

the same color or pattern. You can find some of the best color combinations by taking a peek at the autumn leaves. Browns or beiges, reds, yellows, and soft oranges, are great for adding some variety to your photos, while still coordinating with your family members. When committing to your photo apparel, you also must take your background into account. For example, if you are being photographed in a fall setting, like a pumpkin patch or the woods, you would not want your primary colors to be the same as the leaves in the background. Add some dark greens or soft blues and teals to make your photos pop. These fall color combinations will leave your family photos looking unbe-leaf-able! When choosing outfits, no matter the occasion, the most important thing is that you feel good about what you are wearing. That’s where we come in. We’re here to help you find the clothes you love. We’re here to help you feel beautiful!

WINTER

PHOTOGRAPHY

TIPS

By Jonathan Adams

I

love winter! How often do you hear that? I'm guessing not very often. But I'm telling you the truth, I love winter! Why? Well it's not because I love the frigid temperatures (I don't) but because I love their effects. I absolutely love snow, ice, frost, frost flowers, frozen waterfalls, icicles, ice floes on the rivers, frozen fountains, frozen bubbles, snow-covered bison...all of it!

Winter beauty provides some of my favorite photographic subjects. With that in mind, here are five tips to help make sure you capture all of winter’s splendor.

1

Be serious about your winter gear. Try to eliminate obstacles to heading outside in the cold, so you can make spontaneous winter excursions more likely. Make use of handwarmers and whatever warm accessories you can imagine. There's no such thing as cheating, and it's not some macho contest. Looking goofy is fine. Just don't be cold. Remember, there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate gear.

2

Look small. Much of winter's beauty is found in the intricate details of frost, snow or ice crystals. The closer you look, the more you will be rewarded. Ice is incredibly beautiful.

10

3

Don't be afraid to make your snowy photos bright. Your camera will automatically try to darken your snowy photos, assuming the white spots are overexposed. But snow is white! Embrace it and brighten your photos when you edit them to bring out the true colors. You will start to see how gray all the other photos look in comparison. You can also compensate by adjusting the exposure when you shoot.

4

Be careful when venturing into the ice and snow! Much of my winter photography involves ice. After all, the only thing cooler than waterfalls are frozen waterfalls! So be very cautious as you

explore, and take extra precaution not to slip, slide or fall off or into anything. Be adventurous, but please be smart in your winter weather excursions.

5

Share the joy! Winter doesn't have to invoke a sense of dread. Yes, it’s often dark and cold these months, but winter is much more bearable with good company! When heading out, bring a friend or family member! Share your adventures, whether they be in your back yard, our beautiful square or our incredible trails. Learn to enjoy it and share it. That spreads the enthusiasm to others. It's the right kind of infection to spread this winter. After all, we are Kansans! Ad astra per aspera!

he holiday season seems to be an extremely busy time for everyone, and it’s easy to get caught up in the rush of the season. From traveling to spending time with family and friends, to all the festivities happening, to finding the perfect gift for everyone on your list — we sometimes tend to lose focus of a precious gift we’ve already been given. That's the year Allen County Hospital first opened its doors in service to our community. The hospital became a reality because men and women from every corner of the county held fast to a vision and worked hard to obtain it. "The hospital is a community dream. . ." appeared in a quote in The Iola Register in 1952, announcing the dedication of the new hospital. Throughout the decades, community-minded citizens have continued to come together to establish committees and foundations that have driven many improvements, culminating with the campaign that guided the building of our current facility in 2013. We are once again embarking on a new era of healthcare in Allen County, making changes that will bring advancements and sustainability, so that we may continue to provide for the health and well-being of the citizens of Allen County and our surrounding rural communities. It has been our pleasure to serve you for the past sixty-seven years. With gratitude, we wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season.

Guide to surviving the 5 Tips for Holiday Health

& Happiness!

Maintain a schedule Get out of bed, eat, exercise, and take any medications about the same time as you normally would, even during holidays and days off work. Stay active If you can't stick to your normal exercise routine, do some fun activity with family or friends. Exercise in 10- to 15-minute segments 2 or 3 times a day. Contribute a healthy dish at the next potluck There are many delicious low-carb and diabetes-friendly recipes that you can bring to parties. Try LOW-CARB BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP at your next holiday gathering (recipe below). Others will appreciate the healthy option. Be party smart Look over everything before making any selections, then pick vegetables, meats, or cheeses first. Place your appetizers on a napkin instead of a plate and you'll be less likely to overfill it. Keep hands busy with a glass of water. Remember the reason for the season Put the focus on family and friends and not on food. Find balance and take time to savor what you eat. The holidays will only be great if you are in good health to enjoy them.

Happy Holidays from Allen County Regional Hospital!

LOW-CARB BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP 3 c. shredded cooked chicken 8 oz. cream cheese, cut in pieces 1 c. shredded mozzarella cheese 1/3 c. F

or many of us, the holidays mean time with family. The special memories so many of us cherish often occur when all the siblings, cousins and aunts and uncles are gathered around the table. If that’s the case with your family — and if you have friends or relatives coming to Iola this holiday season — Experience the Lofts is a wonderful option for your guests. The location is ideal, the square is your playground, the amenities are first-class and it’s a way to make their visit to our community that much more special. Experience the Lofts has a proud history. When the Iola square was originally developed in the late 1800s, large masonry construction was used to accommodate a booming economy. The buildings around our square were designed to be beautiful, to draw citizens and travelers from afar. They were built to last for centuries. And they have. But as is the case with most small communities, over the last 20 century

HOMETOWN COMFORT By Ryan Sparks, Experience the Lofts

or so, our population has declined. Furthermore, years ago the upstairs of many of these buildings were abandoned in a large part due to issues with ADA-compliance. With this abandonment, it meant the downstairs retailer would be responsible for the overhead of these monstrous buildings all on their own. The expenses of maintenance, insurance, taxes, and utilities created a financial strain on the downstairs businesses and ultimately made it difficult for businesses to survive on the square. The square became a difficult sell. That’s where Experience the Lofts comes in. Iola’s founders had a commitment to the town square as the cornerstone of our community, and we seek

to further their vision. As such, they began rehabilitating the upstairs of these buildings in hopes of spreading out this financial burden among multiple units. This would in turn lower the overhead on the downstairs businesses, while also helping with another need that this community is starving for: nice short-term lodging. Within a few short years, nine high-end lofts have been built, gaining rave reviews from travelers

with Iola as their destination. Also, the southeast corner of the Iola square is now 100% occupied by retail businesses, in large part thanks to the reduced rent allowed by the upstairs once again generating revenue. We here at Experience the Lofts believe that with time and dedication, Iola's entire square can once again be the place where residents and tourists alike head to enjoy a good meal, some wonderful shopping and the best lodging in the area. OUR KITCHEN To Yours

By Carri Sailor, Rookies Sports Bar & Grill

T

he holidays are an awesome time of year. Football season is in high gear (Chiefs!!!), and it’s when family and friends can reconnect. I always love seeing old friends drop by Rookies to say hi, grab a quick burger or catch the game.

But if your family is anything like mine, the holidays are also super busy. And those family dinners where we’re all seated around the table are hard to schedule between work, stuff with the kids, holiday shopping and a million other things to do.

Pumpkin Dessert on the Go

• 1 package of yellow cake mix • ¾ cup of melted butter • ¾ cup of chopped walnuts • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream

Prep: 5 minutes Bake 1 Hour Supplies needed: • 1 can (15 oz.) solid pack pumpkin • 1 can (15 oz.) evaporated milk • 3 eggs • 1 ¼ cup sugar • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice (optional) 24

lthough Christmas decorations have been on display in stores almost before Halloween decorations appeared, the church will mark Sunday, December 1 as the start of the 2019 Christmas season. For centuries now, the first Sunday of Advent has been the first day of the Christmas season — but that wasn't always the case. In fact, the early church didn't celebrate Christmas at all. The ancient Roman Empire celebrated the birthdays of pagan gods: so the early Christians, in fear of idolatry, refrained from celebrating the birthday of Jesus. But in the fourth century, when Christianity became the official religion of the Empire, the Emperor Constantine encouraged celebrating the birth of Jesus instead of celebrating the Winter Solstice and the birth of pagan gods, Mithra and Saturn. That's how Jesus' birth came to be celebrated on December 25.

Slowing down for

CHRISTMAS By The Rev. Dr. Jocelyn Tupper, The United Methodist Churches of Iola The very first Christian missionaries pushed into the primeval forests throughout Europe, clear to Scandinavia and across the channel to Britain, with the message that the one they'd been waiting for, the one they'd been hoping for, had actually come. In the words of St. John, “God has sent light into the darkness of this world and the darkness has not overcome it.” This time of year is perfect for celebrating Jesus' birth because with the winter solstice, the sun starts shining longer and days begin to lengthen, bringing new life to the earth. What better time to remember that God sent his son to shine new life into us all?

It’s all about celebrating the journey! In our church family we have several traditions that are part of us — honed over the years, refined and redefined by time. You know how it goes at Christmas time, especially with young children at home — the excitement builds and builds as the cards and decorations first appear in the stores in September; "Jingle Bell Rock" comes on the radio around Halloween; decorations appear in downtown stores and malls; the first big snowfall arrives; you buy and decorate the tree and attend concerts at school and church; school lets out for the long vacation; there are parties to attend and cookies to bake; you visit Santa 29

in the store; lights go up outside of the house; there is gift buying and wrapping, carol singing in church on Sunday morning, and lighted candles in Christmas Eve worship. Then, in a frenzied instant, the presents are ripped open, the wrappings crumpled up in the trash can, you sweep up the dropped pine needles and it's all over for another year. With a little bit of cleaning up and putting away, we move on to the next year and our normal routine. THE DAYS BETWEEN THANKSGIVING AND NEW YEAR'S DAY CAN BE SO MUCH RICHER AND MEANINGFUL IF WE FIND WAYS TO MARK THE TIME, TO CELEBRATE THE THEMES, TO EXPLORE AS INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND CHURCHES WHAT IT MEANS FOR GOD TO BE BORN IN HUMAN FLESH.

Advent consists of the four Sundays before Christmas Day, and there are nearly two more weeks after Christmas Day until Epiphany (the twelve days of Christmas). The trick is finding what is significant to your journey. We celebrate the beginning of the season with a Hanging of the Greens service; decorating our sanctuary, building and grounds, transforming the normal by dressing it up with symbols and decorations of the winter and Advent seasons; banners, greens, flowers, holly and ivy, and candles. We sing the familiar carols (and a few new ones for good measure); read the biblical stories of a long-awaited savior, angels in the heavens, shepherds and magi. We observe a Blue Christmas, or Longest Night, worship for those who, for one reason or another, simply cannot enter into the unbridled joy of the Christmas season. Some must deal with the recent or unexpected death of a loved one. Some are coping with the aftermath of divorce, job loss, sickness — many different unfor-

tunate and personally tragic circumstances. This is a recognition that part of the reason for Jesus' coming was to bring hope and comfort, to heal the sick, to seek the lost, to restore the broken and broken-hearted. Candlelight Communion services on Christmas Eve give an opportunity for the extended church community to gather – so many friends and relatives come home for the season. It is a time that helps to ready us for the birth of the babe. Following his Christmas Eve "conversion," it was said of Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" that he certainly knew how to “keep Christmas.” And so it may be said of us and our churches. But in doing so, are we also missing out on other interesting and meaningful celebrations before and after the big day? As with any trip, the journey can be made more significant and enjoyable with a few personally significant and intentional stops along the way.

Join us, explore the season and find the origin of your Christmas celebration!
