Community theater at its best For great live theater productions you can’t go wrong with the Ganado Community Townhall Players. The theater troupe debuted in 2017 with Christmas Belles and 2020 kicks off with Fireflies in April. Fireflies, by Matthew Barber, is based on the novel Eleanor and Abel by Annette Sanford, a longtime resident of Ganado. Directed by the mother and daughter team of Jonel Knuppel and Jana Johnson, Fireflies is about retired schoolteacher Eleanor Bannister who lives a quiet life alone in tiny Groverdell, Texas, set in her routines and secure in her position as the town’s most respected woman – until a hole in her roof draws the attention of Abel Brown, a smooth-talking drifter intent on renovating Eleanor’s house, and possibly her life. The upcoming season promises some gems that should not be missed. Shows are held in the Rear Window Listening Room in Ganado.

The city pool features a large slide and two diving boards. A community center is available on the grounds to rent for meetings or parties. The Edna Children’s Park on the corner of Pumphrey and Live Oak St. has a large playground and is surrounded on three sides by large shade trees. The Martin Luther King Jr. Children’s Park, dedicated to former Edna City Councilman Lorrian Jones, is located on the corner of the old Carver Elementary School in the 1100 block of Second Street in Edna. It has a bevy of playground equipment, a covered pavilion with benches and barbecue pits. All three parks feature walking paths and are open from 5 a.m.

The Ganado Cinema, 120 S. 3rd Street opened in June of 1941 with 327 seats. It was the first theater in America to have an all-digital, fiberoptic audio network. Movie admission tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12 years old and senior citizens 62 and over. until 10 p.m. daily. The City of Ganado also has a park and sports complex, Devers Creek Park, that offers playground equipment for the kids, baseball fields, football field, fishing piers, covered basketball pavilion, picnic tables and volleyball court. So pack up the kids and spend a day enjoying the best Jackson County has to offer.

Inteplast–A business built on trust

Over twenty-five years ago Inteplast Group was founded upon a strong belief in the American workforce and its abilities to manufacture world class products in the United States. Over time Inteplast Group grew to encompass locations beyond the U.S. and North America but we will still always harken back to our humble beginnings in Lolita, Texas, where we built our flagship location. The remote South Texas land upon which the plants and offices were built, in 1991, was convenient for the construction space it afforded them and they also didn’t have the typical zon-

ing restrictions. Inteplast Group was fortunate, in that they accessed cost-effective utility services, among the lowest in North American. It was during this time in the early 1990s that they also came to discover the culture of their hard-working colleagues in the area and their surrounding South Texas communities. This created an opportunity for local and regional partnerships built on trust. Eventually Inteplast’s growing position as a leader in domestic manufacturing allowed us to ensure that even though the recessions, they remained firmly anchored stateside in Texas. At

Inteplast Group facility in Lolita, Texas

the time, this maverick-like stance was in contrast to other companies that elected to lay off their professionals and shutter their American operations with the intention of reopening and starting anew outside of the United States. Today, Inteplast Group comprises more than 50 locations in North America and maintains a culture that integrates transparency, capacity, innovation, and continues improvement. They aim to contribute to various markets throughout the world in a manner that respects the needs of their workforce, a global economy, and a planet with resources that must sustained. Inteplast Group offers a onestop shopping experience. Whether a company seeks institutional can liners, decking, reusable packaging, medical fall prevention slippers, or biohazardous waste bags – they have options for just about every market. They also have the customer service to match their capabilities. Inteplast manufactures a

wide range of films and products from sandwich and portion-size foods bags to latex gloves to decking and molding for the building products, health care, foodservice, packaging, grocery, retail, sanitation, industrial, and graphic arts markets. The company has more than 7,000 employees at its 50 facilities. Inteplast Group is located at 101 Inteplast Blvd in Lolita, TX. Visit inteplast.com for more information about their products and solutions.

Stone Cold Steve Austin

Stone Cold Steve Austin is better known as Steve Williams in Edna, Texas. Williams, who found fame and fortune as a professional wrestler and actor, graduated from Edna High School. He is the son of Ken Williams and the late Beverly Williams. Steve Austin broke into the wrestling business in Texas in 1990 as part of the USWA. After a year he moved on to WCW where he won the WCW championship under the name “Stunning Steve Austin.” He joined WWE in 1996 ,His in-ring accomplishments were many: six WWE Championships, two Intercontinental Championships, a record three Royal Rumble victories and Triple Crown Champion credentials. His 2009 induction to the WWE Hall of Fame was a “no-brainer.”

Candy Barr

The daughter of a South Texas bricklayer and harmonica player, Juanita Dale Slusher became famous in the 1950s as a stripper named Candy Barr. She ran away from home at the age of 13 and ended up in Dallas, working as a maid in a motel. At 14, she married a small time thief who ended up going to prison. To support herself she danced in nightclubs and became a prostitute to survive. In the early fifties she met Abe Weinstein who told her he was going to make her a star. The two came up with the name Candy Bar, she dyed her hair blond and began performing her suggestive dance routine to packed houses. She danced at strip clubs in Las Vegas and spent time in prison on a trumped up marijuana charge. Two months before President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, she was visited by Jack Ruby, one of her nightclub friends. After Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald, federal agents questioned Candy to see what she knew about his involvement. She did a few brief appearances here and there and quietly moved back to Jackson County to live out the rest of her life in seclusion.
