There are so many benefits of exercising to our mental health but
I’m going to focus on four:
leaves less for our body to do during the night so it can put its effort into maintaining a healthy sleep cycle.
I believe the biggest Stress reduction affect exercise has on Endorphin release our mental health Better Sleep and Interpersonal Connections is the interpersonal
I am not going to beat around the bush; we’re all friends here. Our mental health has been affected these previous 6+ months. Between the threat of the virus, the stress of lockdowns and stay-in-place orders, and the new accommodations and procedures we must make for the workplace and schools, there has been so much that has changed so rapidly that it would be foolish to assume we could carry on as normal. While we may not be able to return to our previous “normal” every day life, we can work to make sure our mental health allows us to prosper in these trying times and build newly found levels of resiliency.
It is no secret that our mental health and physical health are connected. We’ve all had those days where we’ve found reasons to skip the gym, yoga or spin class and were lethargic, groggy or irritable. We’ve all also had days where we felt like the world was crashing in on us, but a workout left us with a clearer vision and energy to take on whatever challenges may arise. While that is not a formal study, the results we feel clearly show a strong connection between taking care of ourselves physically and the positive effects we experience mentally.
These four are not only intertwined but have a huge trickledown effect on everything we experience. Stress reduction is arguably the biggest effect we look for from exercising. According to the American Psychological Association, “44% of adults say they walk or exercise to manage stress.” I think it’s important here to note that to feel the effects of stress reduction we don’t have to spend hours in the gym. Attending a short class, walking, stretching, focused breathing in yoga meditation or any low-level activity has the ability to provide stress relief.
When we exercise we release endorphins. Not only do these endorphins make us feel happy or euphoric (i.e. runner’s high) they also have been shown to improve our memory and help us to have clearer thoughts. Being able to think more clearly and recall what we know not only is better for our mental health, but allows us to stress less during work, meetings or conversations where our mind may usually feel foggy.
Having a consistent exercise and wellness routine leads to better sleep. The increase in body temperature during exercise helps our body to wind down at night by causing a more rapid cool down, allowing us to get to sleep quicker. On top of that, the energy we burn throughout the day, both during and after exercise, assists in digestion of the food we eat. This
connections we make.
There is nothing that brings total strangers together quite like sweating and accomplishing the task laid before them. When we make these connections, we don’t only gain a workout buddy, we gain a support group, a sense of community, belonging and friendship. And it is building these tribes that keeps us motivated and leaves everyone in a better mental and physical state. Absolutely one important thing this past year has taught me is how much my tribes mean to my wellbeing and happiness. We really do become sort of a “workout family”, enjoying the camaraderie of classes, shared workouts and just hanging out at the club. Dr. Emma Seppala, Ph.D. writes in Psychology Today, “Social connection strengthens our immune system, helps us recover from disease faster, and may even lengthen our life span. "Social connectedness generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional, and physical well-being.” As we move into 2021 I hope you join me in continuing to search for opportunities to resume normal exercise patterns and social connections. Doing this will surely be our best chance of staying safe and healthy physically and mentally. Keep exercising and stay connected with your tribe. Looking so forward to seeing you at the club. TO KEEPING YOU SAFE STOP THE SPREAD WHAT WE ARE DOING AT PAC: Daily deep cleaning of the entire facility. Frequent cleaning of supplies and surfaces. Cleaning with a hospital-grade disinfectant + using advance technology: Electrostatic Sprayer Offering soap, disinfectant spray for equipment, and hand sanitizing stations throughout the facility. Working with local health authorities to stay ahead of this evolving situation. Employees temperature will be taken upon arrival. ALL Employees are required to wear a mask.
WHAT YOU CAN DO AT PAC:
WEAR A MASK*
WIPE DOWN EQUIPMENT
WASH HANDS FREQUENTLY
PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING
STAY HOME IF SICK
*Individuals ages 8 years & older must wear a mask at all times in the Club with the exceptions below: Member's may temporarily remove their mask ONLY when actively working out or when outdoors provided that social distancing is observed. If you have a medical condition preventing the use of a mask please notify staff or General Manager.
WHEN YOU FIRST WALK INTO THE CLUB YOU ARE LIKELY TO NOTICE A FEW CHANGES, AND THERE ARE MANY MORE BEHIND THE SCENES. THESE CHANGES ARE THE RESULT OF OUR TEAM'S DEDICATION TO PROVIDING YOU THE SAFEST AND CLEANEST POSSIBLE CLUB EXPERIENCE. Social distancing is key and our 70,000 sqft facility will ensure you have enough space. Fitness areas in the Club will support physical distancing between members through equipment spacing and floor markings to indicate social spacing in Group Ex studios. We’ve increased our cleaning efforts, transitioned to a hospital grade disinfectant and added sanitation stations around the club including hand sanitizers, disinfectant spray and wipes for members. We invested in two Electrostatic Sprayers, a safe, and highly effective new cleaning technology now fully integrated in our daily cleaning
routine. It works by providing a positive charge to a disinfecting solution so that it electromagnetically adheres to targeted surfaces, providing 360-degree coverage. Electrostatic technology combined with our EPA registered green disinfectant solution, has proven to safely kill 99.9 percent of viruses including Covid-19, bacteria, pathogenic and environmental organisms; making it powerful and effective without any downside. Creating a much safer and healthier environment for even our youngest members. The Electrostatic Sprayer and EPA registered green disinfectant solution are used in schools, NICU, doctors offices and other organizations. At Pelican Athletic Club we are all on the cleaning team! We encourage members and guests to wash their hands, wipe down equipment before and after use, wear a mask at all times (unless you are actively working out) and respect social distancing guidelines. Your immune system is your best line of defense, keep it strong!

BAD HABITS
ong term bad habits serve a purpose. They give you a chemical rush that might feel like high-fiving an old friend. They solve multiple basic human needs. Example: the negative behavior might attract more attention from loved ones. This would make a person feel important or significant. It might give you a few moments of solitude, comfort and certainty. There are countless more examples like this. When you try to change a negative habit it’s hard because you find comfort in it. We all know deep-down: the comfort is false. These feelings of satisfaction are fleeting. We must make a decision to once and for all stop this negative behavior. Today, lets kick this old bad habit together! Follow the technique below to get
LIVE
started. This example is to finally achieve your fat-loss goal, but the same technique can be used to overcome other habits. List 5 reasons you don’t get to the gym as much as you should. (Ex: I don’t have the time.) Change these 5 excuses into positive affirmations. (Ex: I have as much time as everyone else and I prioritize gym time.) Now pick the best 2 or 3 and say them 10 times every time you wake, go to bed or eat junk! Ways to resolve the negative behavior: redefine your personal standards. Expect more from yourself. Change your rituals. Watch your thoughts. Make adjustments. Keep going!

NEW NORMAL
L
et's be honest: when it comes to regular exercise, motivation can be a real issue. Maybe it's a mental block, maybe it's carving out time from a busy schedule — whatever the case may be, sticking to a routine can be challenging. However, right now is the best possible time to change our attitudes and habits. We're already several months into the "new normal" (courtesy of COVID-19), so it's time to take stock and make a plan. We've seen several health and wellness trends emerge since March of 2020: a rise in spending on preventative health care, the booming popularity of digital health and wellness services, and an overall increase in consciousness around personal health and security. If we haven't already, it's time to jump on the bandwagon and invest in a safer, stronger, more energetic life for ourselves.

If this is going to be the "new normal," we might as well make it the "best normal" we can. SMART TRAINING HELPS OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM In the health and wellness world, one of the biggest mistakes that beginners make is diving into an exercise program without a solid plan. If we are going to start training our immune system, then it only makes sense to do it smart. Here are 6 keys to building the right program for your body's defensive system:
R egularity. I t's important not to
engage in exercise haphazardly, but to exercise consistently. Many experts recommend that you put exercise in your schedule at least three times a week. Proper dosage. While there's a lot of truth to the old saying "no pain, no gain" you don't want to
over-stress your body and end up hurting your immune system. Exhausting workouts can actually make your body more susceptible to infection, both during and after your training session. One way to correctly dose your exercise regimen is to perform active cool-downs. These mild exercises (stretches, walking, etc.) may promote faster recovery of your cardiovascular and respiratory systems after a strenuous workout. Personalization. It's only logical that your training needs to be personalized if you want to achieve best results. When your exercise program takes your health and fitness baseline into account, then there will be a lower risk of overexerting yourself at the start. G uidance and tracking. Guided training ensures that you won't get overloaded or pushed to your limit, while performance tracking helps you to understand where you are, the progress you've already made and which goal you need to aim for next. F un. When you start to enjoy exercising, you'll be motivated to keep going. One of the best ways to find enjoyment in your training regimen is to see results. Otherwise, it will be all too easy to slip back into old, lazy habits. General lifestyle change. You can exercise as much as you want, but if you only get 2 hours of sleep each night and are constantly stressed about family, work, or money issues, then odds are your immune system won't function at 100% efficiency. The point
In the health and wellness world, one of the biggest mistakes beginners make is diving into an exercise program without a solid plan.
is, investing in a regular exercise routine may not be enough to enjoy better health; you may need to take a hard look at yourself and make some big changes in your lifestyle. REGULAR EXERCISE — THE SMART WAY In summary: Our immune system is a dynamic marvel of engineering. When we engage in regular physical activity we actively boost our immune system's capacity to fight off disease. For best results, we need to be smart about our training. NINE MONTH INTERNSHIP WITH PAC PHYSICAL THERAPY As of April 2020, I, Hannah Estes, completed a nine month internship with PAC Physical Therapy. Through Fontainebleau High School's internship program, I, a senior, was given the opportunity to use two hours out of my schedule to participate in an internship of my choice. I was drawn to PAC PT for the one-on-one scheduling for each patient, the use of PAC's unbelievable gym, and the feeling that each and every person who walks into PAC physical therapy becomes a part of a supportive family. I have learned about rehabilitation, proper communication, and how to make every patient comfortable and happy about their progress. They may not be where they want to be, but they are not where they used to be. I am very thankful for this opportunity and give all my thanks to Mr. Scott McWilliams and Mrs. Jenny Masson. They have taught me how to be a better person for myself and for others.
Please call Jenny at 985/626-3641 if you have any questions about PAC Physical Therapy or to schedule an appointment.

MAKING SWIM LESSONS SAFER DURING COVID-19
12 NORTHSHORE FITNESS MAGAZINE
LEARNING TO SWIM IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN DO TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG AND THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFE. BUT WITH THE WORLD CHANGING SO MUCH OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, SAFETY HAS TAKEN ON NEW MEANING. MANY FAMILIES ARE ASKING: ARE SWIMMING LESSONS SAFE DURING COVID-19?
Y
es. The CDC has stated that “There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, or water playgrounds. Additionally, proper operation of these aquatic venues and disinfection of the water (with chlorine or bromine) should inactivate the virus.” In addition to chemical monitoring of the pools, aquatic venues must also ensure that safety measures are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 along the pool deck and throughout the facility.
WHAT ARE OUR FAMILIES SAYING? As we welcome families back into our pools, we are encouraged to hear of an overall positive experience and comfortability with the protocols and modifications we’ve implemented to keep students, parents and staff safe during swimming lessons!
"Learning how to swim was always a priority to me even before my daughter was born because of a tragic accident that happened to someone I know. Due to COVID-19 we weren’t able to start as soon as we wanted to but once they finally re-opened, I immediately enrolled my daughter. The instructors are awesome, and the staff is super friendly. Even during a time like this, I feel super comfortable because they follow protocol for the virus. It’s honestly something we look forward to once a week and I highly recommend everyone to enroll their children so they can learn basic survival skills! We absolutely love it here!" – Jessica C. “We had an amazing first day back at the pool! It was a seamless check in, and the Instructors didn’t miss a beat. My daughter missed her classes so much and was so happy to be back in the water.” – Allison F. “Love it! I had my worries due to COVID-19 but the staff took all the precautions as needed. My daughter was nervous to get in the water on the first day but by the end of the lesson she didn’t want to leave! – Lindsey B. For more information on our safety protocols or swim lessons email charlotte@thepac. com.
AT PELICAN ATHLETIC CLUB, WE HAVE CHANGED THE WAY WE DELIVER INSTRUCTION TO ENSURE OPTIMAL SAFETY FOR STUDENTS AND INSTRUCTORS. • All instructors wear face shields and have their temperature checked • Contactless check-in • Sanitation stations • Decreased ratio of children per lesson • Staggered lessons to improve social distancing on the pool deck • Increased cleaning and disinfecting protocols of pool equipment between lessons

Boost Your Energy Levels & Immune System With Covid cases surging, our energy levels and immune systems could use a boost. We often turn to comfort foods on dreary days, but eating the right foods can strengthen our bodies in better ways. Here are some of the most helpful nutrients and the foods to find them in. VITAMIN B12 Found in foods such as milk, meat and fortified foods like breakfast cereals. Vitamin B12 can help combat the winter blahs. It plays an important role in producing serotonin, which helps regulate mood, says Mark Moyad, a director of complementary and alternative medicine at the University of Michigan Medical Center. Getting enough B12 may help thwart symptoms of fatigue and even depression, he says. “When B12 is off, there are so many things that can go wrong. Donald Hensrud, director of the Mayo Clinic’s Healthy Living Program in Rochester, Minn., says that about 15% of people over the age of 65 lack some B12, which is why he often recommends supplements of 500 to 1,000 micrograms daily. VITAMIN C Found in foods including citrus fruits, tomatoes and potatoes. Vitamin C helps the immune system function properly. It won’t likely cure or prevent colds, but has been shown to slightly reduce duration of symptoms, says Dr. Moyad. It may also help those whose systems are under strain. One 2013 review of 29 clinical trials found that while taking vitamin C regularly didn’t reduce the incidence of colds in the general population, it may have helped some 598 subjects exposed to periods of physical exertion, such as marathon runners and skiers. The recommended daily allowance of C is 75 to 90 milligrams a day for adults. One orange contains 51 milligrams. VITAMIN D Found in fatty fish, eggs, liver and mushrooms. Some researchers are looking into possible links between Vitamin D deficiency and Covid; findings from studies examining the use of Vitamin D to prevent or treat Covid aren’t conclusive, but some are promising, experts say. Vitamin D is often added to foods such as milk and orange juice. The body can also make Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. For people who are vegan or who live in northern latitudes, doctors may recommend taking Vitamin D as supplements to ensure adequate levels, says Barbara Davis, a registered dietitian in Canton, Conn. ZINC Found in foods including oysters, red meat, poultry, crab and lobsters, beans, nuts and whole grains. Zinc can help the immune system fight bacteria and viruses. Researchers have tested the effectiveness of zinc on the severity and duration of cold symptoms, with mixed results. “The consensus seems to be that taking zinc at the first sign of a cold does seem to shorten the duration slightly versus not taking the zinc,” says Craig Hopp, a deputy division director at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, an arm of the National Institutes of Health. IRON Found in foods including meat, seafood, poultry, beans, spinach, iron-fortified cereals and breads. Not getting enough iron can lead to anemia, whose symptoms can include tiredness, memory and concentration lapses and reduced ability to fight infections. Legumes such as white beans, lentils and peas carry “nonheme” iron, found in plant foods and iron-fortified food products. While most Americans get enough iron, certain groups are more likely to have trouble meeting thresholds, such as premenopausal women.

HEN PAC RE-OPENED AFTER QUARANTINE, TROY AND ASHLEY RUSH WERE ECSTATIC AND AMONG THE FIRST AND MOST DEDICATED VISITORS. UNFORTUNATELY FOR THEIR NEIGHBORS, A PRIME SOURCE OF ENTERTAINMENT LEFT THE STREETS. “We used to go on these 4 mile walks in our subdivision and the neighbors thought we were hilarious,” Ashley said. “We’d come down the street with Carter (age 6) on a scooter crying and Patton (age 18 months) in a stroller crying because we’d been out so long but all of us needed to get out of the house.” Once the club opened in June, Troy, Ashley and Carter took advantage of three of PAC’s unique specialty classes – METStrength for strength development, BURN for high intensity conditioning and Foundations, a youth fitness class which helps develop proper active movement patterns. “We’re not very good at working out at home,” Ashely said. “When PAC re-opened it was a way for us to be get back to normalcy – get active and get the kids active. It was something all of us needed.”
"We are definitely more into strength development more now than ever. The variety in the classes make for a great challenge each workout."

Troy and Ashley were on a roll before the Covid-19 quarantine hit having been consistent with both classes. But upon returning, they really got into strength development in their METStrength classes offering two different types of workouts – one for pure strength development and one which has cardiovascular circuits combined with strength circuits. The strength workout protocols – number of repetitions, sets and combinations of exercises - are changed every three to six weeks to create a variety of physical challenges and in theory, more effective workouts. “We are definitely into strength development more now than ever. The variety in the classes make for a great challenge each workout,” Ashley said. “We had to quit using the scale though because you see more results from your clothes. All my sizes are smaller than before even though my weight has changed.” Troy for his part had lost weight via dieting, but after a plateau in June of 2019 found the addition of exercise helped to continue his progress, moving down four pant
sizes over the course of a year. The quarantine put a short setback in his progress though. “I definitely got the quarantine 15 (weight gain) but have been able to recover with the help of the classes,” Troy said. Carter for his part enjoyed getting back to seeing his friends and taking part in the huge variety of movement training in Foundations. “I like the obstacle courses and running around with my friends,” Carter said. Not only are the classes the Rushs attend beneficial from an overall health and activity standpoint, the instructors and club make a strong effort to reduce the risk of Covid 19 infection through equipment cleaning before, during and after classes. Keeping participants relatively separated with different exercise assignments and making sure to minimize contact with each other during the exercise sessions. Recent research has indicated health clubs have low to moderate risks of infection if judicious protocols are followed, and innumerable

studies indicate exercise's effectiveness in improving immune function and mental well-being. This evidence indicates health club attendance to be a potential infection fighter through improved fitness and durability. “PAC did a great job of making us feel comfortable with the extra cleaning help as well as the instructors wiping down equipment during classes,” Ashley said.

FITNESS INDUSTRY, CONCLUSIVELY FOUND THAT FITNESS FACILITIES ARE SAFE AND ARE NOT CONTRIBUTING TO THE SPREAD OF COVID-19. From May 1 through August 6, 2020, IHRSA and MXM closely examined and compared member check-in data (number of gym visits) from a number of fitness facilities – such as Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness, Life Time and Orangetheory – across the country with self-reported infection
rates. After nearly 50 million checkins over that three-month period, the study found that a nominal 0.0023 percent tested positive for COVID-19. Gyms nationwide have robust COVID-19 safety measures in place and there is zero evidence that the positive cases originated in gyms themselves. "As recently as a few months ago, the data correlating fitness facility visits and mitigating risk was practically nonexistent. All that's changed – and for the better," said MXM CEO Blair McHaney.
Obesity, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes put you at much higher risk for complications with Covid 19
"It's become abundantly clear that the safety measures gyms, sports clubs and boutique fitness centers have in place are not only incredibly effective at keeping their membership safe, but also curbing any potential spread of COVID-19 during a time when we all need access to exercise facilities to stay healthy." The fitness industry's only trade association, IHRSA, along with MXM, invited all health and fitness clubs in the United States to participate in the long-form study. Over the course of the study, fitness centers provided their total check-ins and number of locations across all states in which they have a presence as well as self-reported on the total number of positive COVID-19 cases documented between employees and members
who have been in the club. MXM previously conducted a study surrounding the lack of concentrated outbreaks in fitness facilities with affirming results just last month. "The check-in data proves that health clubs – when following strict cleaning and safety protocols – are safe," said Brent Darden, IHRSA interim President and CEO. "At IHRSA, we have a responsibility to educate and inform people that they should feel comfortable and confident going into fitness facilities throughout the country right now.

TEETH WHITENING QUESTIONS ANSWERED
DO ALL TEETH WHITEN THE SAME?
NO. Teeth whitening is an exciting option for patients; however, not all teeth are created equal when it comes to teeth whitening! Yellow stains respond very well to bleaching while brownish stains or greyish-colored teeth may not respond well at all. In fact, greyish-colored teeth may require multiple in-office and at-home treatments before a satisfying result can be achieved! What’s the difference between at-home teeth whitening and in-office teeth whitening? Some whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide and others contain carbamide peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down faster than carbamide peroxide, so it releases most of its whitening power within 30–60 minutes. Carbamide peroxide, on the other hand, releases about 50% of its whitening power in the first two hours and can remain active for up to six additional hours. Most in-office whitening systems use a higher percentage hydrogen peroxide (usually around 35%) so a protective barrier must be used and the teeth must be closely monitored during the procedure to help avoid ulcerations and extreme teeth sensitivity. At-home whitening systems contain carbamide peroxide (anywhere from 10%-35%) or they contain a lower percentage of hydrogen peroxide (10%) which can be used safely at-home without a barrier! Which teeth whitening system produces the best and longest lasting results? To obtain the fastest, most effective, and most satisfactory results, Dr. Alvarez recommends in-office teeth whitening followed by a strict at-home regimen of professional grade teeth whitening gels with customized carrier trays that fit like mouthpieces. Dr. Alvarez uses Opalescence BOOST and Opalescence at-home whitening system which comes in different flavored gels. Teeth whitening is safe and can produce wonderful results to boost self-esteem and give you the smile you’ve always wanted!
