top using sunscreens that contain harmful chemicals! Endocrine system (hormone) disruptors, like oxybenzone, might just ruin your time in the sunshine. You should avoid anything that messes with your hormones! Mineral sunscreen is a great solution for a healthier you in the outdoors. Protecting yourself against skin cancer and premature aging is as simple as using the right products. Many conventional sunscreens contain a chemical called oxybenzone. They can also contain avobenzone, ecamsule and octocrylene. Not only is this bad news for you—it’s bad news for the environment. Chemicals like these are partially to blame
By Kristy Podruchny for the destruction of coral reefs. States like Florida and Hawaii have banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone effective 2021. Mineral sunscreens are safer for you and the environment. Avoid brands with nano-particles because these harm the environment and offer less protection. Mineral sunscreens deflect UV rays, do not absorb into the bloodstream and prevent skin cancer. These sunscreens are made from titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide, and are usually accompanied by other natural, skin-soothing ingredients. They tend to be less irritating to sensitive skin and are popular among people with eczema.
Because mineral sunscreens physically block UV rays, it’s best to cover exposed skin and reapply often if you’re sweating and/or swimming. The bottle should give you a better idea as to how often to reapply, but it’s a good idea to reapply at least every two hours. If you’re using spray sunscreen, try not to inhale it. Embrace the chalky goodness of mineral sunscreen. While it may not blend as well as chemicalladen sunblock, at least you’ll see if you missed a spot! The benefits of protecting your health and the environment outweigh a few white streaks. Besides, the lifeguard look is in!

Combination of Stem Cells is a ‘Real Game Changer’ for Older Adults Seeking Faster Pain Relief At a recent gathering of fellow doctors and scientists involved in stem cell research and clinical application, Dr. Ramon Castellanos shared what he sees as a “real game changer” for older adults seeking faster and longer-lasting pain relief. During his recent keynote address at the 4th International Stem Cell Congress & Expo in Paris, he presented on the use of particulate grow factors from stem cell derived from placenta and umbilical cord in knee osteoarthritis.
The real game changer is combinations of stem cells to reduce pain faster Dr. Castellanos explained the good news that this approach is more effective in individuals older than 50 than using their own stem cells, either of bone marrow or derived from fat tissue. Over a period of 10 years, Dr. Castellanos reported he observed that this population of aging individuals was not responding as well as his younger patients to the conventional

approach at managing pain in joints affected by arthritis and other conditions such as herniated, ruptured discs. “Over time, we noticed than younger individuals had much better response autologous stem cell injections than those older than 50 years,” he said. Upon further investigation, Dr. Castellanos noted that stem cell begins to get scarce and less active when people turn 50 – which explains why most of his colleagues were often refraining from offering stem cell therapy in patients over 70. As a result, since 2015, Dr. Castellanos has been focused on finding and utilizing alternatives to replace the aging stem cells in those individuals older than 50. “When we started using stem cells derived from placenta and umbilical cords, the response was significantly better.” Over the next four years, Dr. Castellanos tried different combinations of stem cells derived from placenta and umbilical cord – and with spectacular results. He found that pain exhibited among his patients went away faster, and the relief lasted longer. And the best part was that

he no longer had to invade the individual to collect their stem cells. This new revolution inside the revolutionary concept, however, needed to be proven. In 2017 Dr. Castellanos selected 20 individuals over age 50 with constant knee pain. They all agreed to be injected with the grow factors from placenta and umbilical cord, and then were followed closely at monthly intervals over one year. “All but one had significant improvement – and they were able to resume such simple activities as going up and down stairs,” he
reported. After one year, the 19 individuals reported their pain was still under control. As a result of his findings, this new and impactful approach caught the attention of the international community. “Despite the honor and relevance of being invited to present at the Paris conference,” he says, “the most important thing is being able to help people living in pain.” “By finding this solution for aging cells, we have achieved a real revolution inside a revolutionary concept in medicine that allows for the use of stem cell to improve orthopedic conditions in joints and spine, instead of medication and surgery,” he concluded.

TUMMY IN CONTROL
NOT ONLY IS A SLENDER TUMMY CONFIDENCE BOOSTING, IT IS A SIGN OF GOOD HEALTH. A STUDY PUBLISHED IN THE “JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION,” FOUND THAT WAIST SIZE IS A STRONGER PREDICTOR OF HEART DISEASE THAN WEIGHT, ESPECIALLY IN WOMEN. TO TAKE CONTROL OF BELLY FAT, STICK TO A DIET WITH LEAN PROTEINS, HEALTHY FATS AND COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATES. BEGIN AN EXERCISE PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES AT LEAST 30 TO 60 MINUTES OF MODERATE-INTENSITY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY EVERY DAY. GET STARTED BY TRYING THESE FAT-BUSTING EXERCISES.
THE PLANK WITH LATERAL TOE TAPS
This whole body exercise integrates shoulders, abdominals and leg strength. Raising the leg tones the rotational oblique muscles for a chiseled look. A) Place forearms on the ground. B) Walk feet out until legs are straight. Keep hips raised in line with shoulders and ankles. Keep chin tucked in and head raised. C) Raise right leg off the floor and tap toes right by a few inches and back to the center. Repeat on left side. Repeat alternately for 60 seconds.

LOWER ABDOMINAL LEG RAISE
By strengthening these abdominal muscles, we prevent the lower back from over-arching and we can flatten the lower tummy. By raising both legs with knees bent, the abdominals become strong with less pressure on your back. A) Start by lying on back with arms by sides (for more resistance, raise body slightly) and raise both legs with knees bent into the air above hips. Hold for 10 seconds B) Lower legs while straightening knees until 3 to 4 inches from the floor. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat ten times.
SIDE LEG RAISES
The abdominal muscles move us in all directions. This exercise focuses on the oblique muscles through the side of the body but also targets the shoulders and hips. A) L ie on your side with forearm on the floor and head resting in your hand. Keep legs straight with ankles in line with shoulders. B) R aise leg 24 inches above ground. Hold for 10 seconds. Lower leg to 4 inches above your bottom leg and hold for 10 seconds. C) Repeat on each side 10 times.

healthy immune system starts with a healthy gut. The market is exploding with products containing probiotics, but gut health isn’t as simple as popping a pill every day. Gut health is closely connected with your lifestyle. In fact, it’s dependent on you making healthy choices. Staying active, eating whole foods and avoiding certain foods is a good foundation. Eating a variety of vegetables and fruits is a given, but have you ever tried fermented foods? We need a variety of different strains of probiotics and can introduce them into our bodies by eating fermented foods. is ideal, but not necessary. Kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut and non-GMO miso are all wonderful products filled with beneficial probiotics. A bonus to eating fermented cabbage comes from its glutamine content. This gut-healthy amino acid nourishes cells in your intestines. Not a bad deal! Critters in your gut need to eat too, and they thrive on prebiotic fibers in vegetables and fruits. In fact, chicory, artichoke and bananas are all great sources of prebiotic fibers. The collagen, amino acids, vitamins and minerals from a homemade bone broth can also help restore damaged stomach lining. This is important for people struggling with leaky gut as well as any other chronic inflammation. There are also a few wellmade packaged bone broths sold in health food stores. Avoid processed and

fried foods that cause chronic inflammation. These can stress your body and compromise your immune function. A diet high in processed foods creates an ideal environment for pathogens, or “bad” microorganisms. Stress management is crucial for gut health. When you’re stressed and in a fight-or-flight (sympathetic) response, your digestive system gets put on hold while your body prepares you to survive a threat. If you’re not digesting your food and absorbing nutrients prop-
erly, your gut health takes a nosedive. You can engage your rest-and-digest (parasympathetic) response with relaxation exercises and diaphragmatic breathing, which manually massages your vagus nerve. This gets the gears moving in your digestive system and jumpstarts your body’s regenerative processes.

aster is just around the corner - pastel shades, baby animal, and eggs in every store window. Eggs for days! You know what that means for the kids? Lots of decorating. You can go for the traditional option with packaged dyes and colorful stickers, but there are a plethora of other ideas out there. Try something new this Easter, like marbling to pressed flowers. Give your kids the freedom to decorate; they might even come up with a new family decorating tradition. Let’s hop into some of the best new ideas for decorating Easter eggs.
Pressed Flowers Nature is already stunning, so why not use flowers and plants to your advantage? Take the kids for a walk around the neighborhood or your backyard garden and fill a small bowl with flowers. Daisies, rose petals and clovers are easy options. Before you begin the decorating process, press your florals between a book or hard surface. The trick is to get them as flat as possible. While they are setting, wash the eggs and dip them in vinegar. It will act as an adhesive, but make sure to press your flowers onto the eggs before the vinegar dries. Presto, beautiful eggs perfect for springtime. Jewels Let me tell you, kids love gems. Grab some sticker jewels, sequins, and beads and let your

kiddos bejewel away! Pro tip: smaller rhinestones will stick better to the round surface of the egg. Encourage your kids to create patterns with geometric designs or color. And hey, if they want to go wild, cover the entire egg with jewels. Bedazzled egg decor will sparkle all holiday long. Marbling Marbleized decorating is all the rage! Swirls of color and galaxy patterns. It’s so simple - you’re kids won’t want to go back to traditional egg decorating. Start with a base color. When you’re ready, mix a cup of warm water, food coloring and 1 tsp of vinegar. Drop the egg in and swirl it around until you get the desired effect. Let the eggs dry on a wire rack. Nail polish can be used as an alternative. Either way, marbling is quite the fun project.
Animals & Superheroes Instead of pretty designs, try specific themes, like animals, superheroes or people. The kids will be able to get into their own element with this one as each child has their favorite pet or movie character. Get the kids to print pictures of their desired person or animal. Pull out all necessary craft supplies (stickers, pom poms, googly eyes, etc.). The more the merrier. You’ll have Superman, Mrs. Bunny and Elsa set out on your kitchen table all ready for display. Whether you and your kids opt for tradition or go with a fun, new style of decorating, remember to enjoy the time spent with your kids. Bedazzle, marble and decorate to your heart’s content. Have an Eggtastic Easter with the kiddos!

HARRY AND JILL CONNICK ALERT THE NEW 50S TO COLON CANCER By Patricia F. Danflous
There’s the nine-year-old Harry Connick Jr. with flexible fingers flying over the keyboard as he performs on stage with a Symphony Orchestra.
T
here’s the teen-age Harry hanging out and performing in New Orleans French Quarter Jazz Clubs - with parental approval and encouragement. Harry, the singer, composer, director and actor with a multi-aged fan base. Harry the crazed, serial killer in the movie Copycat; Harry debuting on Broadway as The Pajama Game lead. Mardi Gras enthusiasts around the world recognize him as founder of Orpheus, one of the most extravagant of parades to roll through the streets of New Orleans. South Louisianans know him as an on-going force in Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery. The award-winning multi-talented Harry is also a regular guy – a son, husband and father. His behind-thescenes life is now bringing
him center stage in a new role. Connick and Jill, his wife of 25-years, are spotlighting colon cancer awareness, screening and early detection especially for those in the “New 50” age range. “Cancer's a real drag,” Harry said as his expression transitioned from warm and friendly, to engaging and serious during an interview with INSPIRE HEALTH. “Jill and I have both, unfortunately, a lot of experience personally with cancer in different ways. I did a movie called Living Proof where I played a doctor who came up with a drug Herceptin. After that movie came out women-- I can remember two who came up to me and asked, ‘Should I be on Herceptin? I have breast cancer.’ That hit me not just because they were asking me, as an actor, for advice, but I recognized that in the throes of that kind of crisis people are looking for

They know that the right diagnosis, the right treatment – and more importantly, early detection – can make the difference between life and death. “I've been through the consequences of cancer with people who I love,” Harry explained, acknowledging that the loss of his mother to ovarian cancer when he was just entering his teens affected him deeply. “Jill has been through it herself,” he continued, turning toward his wife, now breast cancer-free. “If we're able to give anyone one a degree of comfort or information, we feel responsible and compelled to do that.” “We love doing an awareness campaign,” Harry said. “What’s the most gratifying, and Jill and I talk about this a lot, is meeting people who are affected in various ways whether it's the stage-4 cancer survivor we just met a few weeks ago, a stage-4 cancer patient or somebody who's been recently diagnosed. We want be able to share what we know to help people get out and get screened.” When detected early, colon cancer has a high survival rate. Up until re-
cently however, an invasive colonoscopy was the only screening method available. It’s a test that no one readily signs up for with a dreadful day-before. The new doit-yourself Cologuard test may rule out the need for a colonoscopy for low or average risk patients. With encouragement and perhaps a little persistence from Jill, Harry did not waste a minute when the test arrived at his doorstep. “I'm the kind of person that even if the result comes back positive, I'm going to do what I have to do, which in this case would be go back to my doctor and get a colonoscopy,” he said. “For a person like me who's over 50 and an average risk, Cologuard is the choice to make. I was very fortunate because my results were negative, but I'm glad I did it. Now I can have peace of mind for the next three years.” Jill is passionate about cancer screening. “I never miss an appointment for a breast screening, she said. “Because I have dense breasts, I have regular sonograms and that’s where my cancer showed up” Her treatment regime included radiation therapy and five years of Tamoxifen as medical therapy. Although drug therapy can be rough, the results can be favorable. “Cancer and cancer treatment is toxic,” Jill emphasized.
“My advice to all those facing breast cancer – or any other cancer – is to surround yourself with family and friends. Just keep life as normal as possible. Have a positive outlook. Listen to your doctors and do what they say.” And be thankful when things go right. “Every time I look at Jill, every time I flick this little ring on my finger, that's something special to me,” Harry smiled. “As opposed to big celebrations, we're more into daily reminders of how thank we are.” In addition to promoting colon cancer awareness the couple is emphasizing that being 50 isn’t what it used to be. They are encouraging others in their generation to take time for themselves, rethink priorities and reinvest in health. What do the new 50s do differently than their parents did at the same age? “Eat healthier,” Jill stated. “I love salads. I eat fish, chicken, a lot of vegetables. I'll cook a lot and use olive oil. I love food like that.” “She's a great cook, too,” Harry added. “Jill has an amazing diet that we follow. I also think that access to better quality, more natural foods is becoming more widespread. We love to eat well with the occasional splurge. It’s hard to resist a fried-oyster poboy when I come home to New Orleans.
LET’S MAKE 50 THE BEST MILESTONE YET. STEP UP AND JOIN THE NEW 50 Remember when you thought turning 50 meant the beginning of the end? As entertainer Harry Connick says, “being 50 isn’t what it used to be.” Today’s 50-year-old who makes an investment in her health can look forward to a long, quality-filled life. As part of their commitment to colon cancer awareness, Connick and his wife Jill are role models for what they call the “New 50,” a generation that makes health a priority. “The New 50 is all about you,” Connick frequently states. “It’s about speaking up for yourself and taking charge of your health. It’s about talking to your healthcare provider about how to live a healthier life and learning screening options that may help prevent or minimize disease.” It’s easy to become a member of the New 50 group. If you’re approaching or have reached the 50-year milestone, start by scheduling a visit with your physician to discuss your individual healthcare needs and don’t neglect to talk about your risk for colon cancer. Many people think that colon cancer is tied to diet, lifestyle or a family history. That’s more of a misconception than the truth. REMEMBER: Your risk for colon cancer increases dramatically after the age of 50. Colon cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women combined. When diagnosed in its earliest stages, colon cancer is 90% treatable. Visit the American Cancer Society website at www.cancer. org or consult your physician for more information about colon cancer.

rink more water. Add more fiber to your diet. Eat healthy and make sure you exercise. Follow that advice and your chances for living a long, healthy life increase ten-fold. Those healthy living tenets are particularly relevant for maintaining a clean colon and drastically minimizing the risk of colorectal cancer. The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons explain that the approximately 5 foot long large intestine, known as the colon, is an important part of the digestive system for processing and preparing the body’s waste products for elimination. Colon problems range from occasional bloating and constipation to gas, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, polyps and colorectal cancers. Statistics and studies reported by the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Cancer Society and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics indicate a healthy diet is one of the most significant factors in colon health. A recent study by the American Cancer Society, for example, showed that colorectal cancer patients who followed healthy diets had a lower mortality risk including those who improved their diets after diagnosis.

Set a goal of drinking two-liters of water a day to keep your body clean on the inside with less chance for constipation, bloating and gas. ✤ Go to the bathroom. Don’t wait until you get home to empty your bowels. You might prefer the privacy but holding it in leads to a build-up of fecal matter and possible toxicity.
✤ E xercise. No need to say more – exercise increases the oxygen flowing through the colon. ✤ C onsider a colon cleanse. With the increased emphasis on alternative medicine, colon flushes are becoming the latest trend in colon health. Flushes are not for everyone. Be sure to consult your physician before you schedule a flush or try to do one on your own. ✤ D on’t wait to call your doctor if you are experiencing abdominal pain or consistent rounds of constipation and diarrhea. Remember, the majority of colon disorders, including colon cancer, can be prevented or treated with early detection. ✤ S chedule a colonoscopy if you are over 50 or have a family history of colon disease.

ccording to the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans , based on a 2000 calorie diet, you should eat 6 ounces of grains and half of these should be whole grains. In 2015, a study from the “British Journal of Nutrition” discovered that whole grains are associated with a lower mortality rate among subjects aged 30 to 64 years. What better motivation to reach for oats in the morning? Whole grains have a wide variety of health benefits. Fiber slows down the digestion of starch and helps regulate blood glucose. It can also help lower cholesterol, clean the digestive tract and help prevent blood clots. Consuming whole grains such as quinoa, includes the outer nutritious and fibrous bran layer, the starchy inner endosperm and the nutrient and healthy-fat filled germ at the core. Processing whole grains into refined flour, for example, removes the fatty germ to prolong shelf life but this depletes the phytochemicals, minerals and vitamins that prevent disease. It’s difficult to stomach but the gut harbors a huge number of bacteria, viruses, fungi and sometimes worms. The average person has around 30 to 40 trillion cells. The gut then adds another 38 trillion. Our microbiome, the total number of genes which microbes contribute to, is linked to our immune system. From a study in the “ISME journal,” it is apparent that whole grains improve

bacterial biodiversity and have a positive metabolic and immunological effect on our bodies via the gut microbioAccording to a study from “Gastroenterology,” consuming 24.3 grams of fiber was linked to a 40 percent reduction in Crohn’s disease. Adversely, grains have been known to worsen autoimmune conditions such as celiac disease. A six week study showed that symptoms in celiac disease sufferers reduced by 73 percent on a grainfree diet. Gluten, a protein found in some grains, can cause negative effects such as bloating and fatigue, even gut damage in some cases. The body detects it as a toxin and initiates an immune response to attack it, creating a cascade of inflammatory responses. Gluten has grabbed plenty of media attention, creating a billion-dollar, gluten-free industry but
more research is needed to prove that it actually has an adverse effect in those that are not gluten-intolerant. Not all gluten-free products are as clean as they appear and they often contain artificial ingredients, irritable to the gut or added sugars which can lead to weight gain. Grains contain phytic acid which is known to impair absorption of iron, zinc and some calcium. When seeds sprout, phytate levels decline so soak your grains in water overnight before you consume them. Grains may lead to disease-causing inflammation but these tend to be either wheat or processed grains. A link has also been found between a grain free diet and weight loss but simply reducing calories and opting for whole grains can help prevent weight gain and blood sugar spikes.

Dr. Jaime L. Sepulveda Expands his Practice to Enhance Women's Beauty “Improved quality of life, however, is not limited to daily activities. I have experienced multiple instances, during post-surgery follow-up sessions, where my patients volunteer information regarding improved sexual function once they’ve recovered from surgery,” said Dr. Sepulveda. “And then recently, I’ve started seeing medical literature pointing to markedly improved sexual function. What I find most relevant is that the marked improvement was actually measured by trustworthy standardized-research methods, specifically designed to measure sexual function in patients with vaginal prolapse and incontinence.” In an age of patient-centered care, one during which outcomes in surgical care are determined by patient satisfaction, feedback from patients often outweighs conventional medical measurements. “It is clear now that surgery for the care of urinary incontinence and vaginal laxity have a positive impact that translates into improved sexual function,” said Dr. Sepulveda. “They have

sex more frequently and engage more frequently in intercourse – and more often they look forward to it because is so much more satisfying. I continue to learn from my patients and their partners. They have shown me the role of my care in their sexual health and their overall wellbeing.” For Dr. Sepulveda, these positive testimonials have prompted him to pursue improved techniques learned from world experts in cosmetic gynecology. “I have added cosmetic genital procedures to my reconstructive work. It came as a natural addition to the surgeries for prolapse and incontinence. The use of a surgical laser has become the standard to perform genital cosmetic procedures with optimal safety and results. It translates to improved wound healing, decreased rate of complications, and decreased blood loss. Overall, patients do better when surgery is performed with a surgical laser.” The continued quest for the best cosmetic procedures has taken Dr. Sepulveda to train with recognized world experts. Having performed reconstructive procedures himself for over 25 years, he is using his expertise to train surgeons – more than 500 to date – who specifically travelled to Miami to learn from Dr. Sepulveda in the operating room. “The approaches I have adopted come as a direct result of my travels to learn from the best surgeons out there in each specific procedure,” he said. Last year, in fact, Dr. Sepulveda was named an associate of the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of America in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he trained with the pioneer in cosmetic gynecology Dr. David Matlock. “I learned to integrate laser cosmetic gynecologic procedures with the reconstructive procedures that I’ve done for over two decades.” The procedures known as Designer Laser Labioplasty® and Designer Laser Vaginoplasty® have been used for over 10 years with proven results and satisfaction. “And I am happy to be able to offer them to my patients,” Dr. Sepulveda added. The term vaginal rejuvenation has been used now for a few years. For many women and their partners, the term is both enticing and puzzling. Dr. Sepulveda explains, “Vaginal rejuvenation is not a procedure or a single treatment. It is a group of procedures aimed at improving and enhancing the appearance and function of the female genitalia.” He noted that it includes surgical procedures and the application of cellular therapy.
Dr. Sepulveda uses cellular therapy for the O-Shot® a procedure popularized in the media for its effects in sexual function and for the Vampire Winglift®, a procedure used to revitalize and lift the labia, whereby providing a more youthful appearance. In patient consultations with Dr. Sepulveda, he often speaks to his passion for patient care in this unique field. “Taking care of my patients has always been a fascinating journey in which innovation has allowed me to apply my experience to new discoveries,” he says. “The goal is to instill great confidence in my patients by enhancing their well-being, helping them to build stronger relationships, and maintaining a youthful outlook in life.”

FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION By Ann Jarema

arasites like fleas and ticks aren’t just gross little blood suckers, they’re also transmitters of disease. According to the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University, fleas often carry bacterial pathogens, while ticks can also carry other diseases including Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Diligence in controlling flea and ticks in your pets is essential for their health - and yours.

HOW TO SHUT DOWN
D
o you ever look around at friends, family, colleagues, or the people you grew up with and wonder why their lives appear to be more successful than yours? Do you find yourself feeling at times you don’t quite measure up, while others seem to be happy and in control? While others are thriving in their work, in their relationships, and in their leisure time, you continue to find yourself grinding through each day overwhelmed by
By Dr. Josh Wagner stress and exhaustion. Revealing an incredibly simple pathway to fulfillment that is completely in your control, I am sharing how unconscious, undeserving beliefs are the primary obstacle standing in the way of your goals, happiness and peace of mind in any area of your life. Here are a few practices that take a total of 20 minutes to implement into your daily routine to flip your deserving switch on and finally achieve everything you want in life.
1.
INITIAL SENSING (2 MINUTES) In a comfortable, seated position with hands on your lap begin to sense your body. Sensing is NOT feeling. You are not feeling the temperature of the room nor the feeling of your skin on your clothing or chair. Sensing is being aware of your body’s internal sensation. You may feel a pulsing of the part of your body you are focusing on, like a heartbeat. Give attention everywhere by mentally scanning your extremities and your core.

2.
CLEARING (5 TO 10 MINUTES) After connecting to your body through sensing, evoke your strongest visual and or auditory memory of the circumstances contributing to your strongest, undeserving belief. The recollection of the person or circumstance should be strong enough to elicit the hurtful, negative emotion in your body easily and quickly. Add to this by intensifying the emotion, for instance, squeezing your stomach muscles as you focus on creating the negative feeling, or even vocalizing out loud what is happening in the scene. As a beginner, you’ll find that your mind is easily distracted and often drifts away during this exercise. Don’t let that discourage you. Every time you realize you are no longer feeling the negative emotion or visualizing the memory, come back to it and re-generate the negative feeling. Sustain the vision and feeling for as long as possible. It’s not easy to do and the more you do this, the longer you will be able to hold the vision and emotion during a session. Once you notice the emotional tension has decreased significantly, you can move to step three. That negative emotion does not have to be gone entirely, just diminished.
3.
EMOTIONALIZING (10 MINUTES) After clearing, you will find it easier to visualize and feel the emotions of what you want to experience in life. You have just wiped clean your emotional state, confidence in your vision and which makes it easier to it has been 20 minutes, gently generate new positive come out of the process. emotions. Keeping the same time each day provides a predictable routine and habit that makes it easier to strengthen your commitment. So if possible, do The Deserving Process first thing in the morning. It is a phenomenal way to begin each day.
To support your effort, consider getting an accountability partner—a spouse, friend, or family member—who can do this process with you and share your journey. Their support and participation are an invaluable asset. Invite someone to read this book at the same time you do and begin the process together. It makes a tremendous difference not to be alone through it. Your commitment to not letting your partner down will strengthen your commitment to yourself. It’s a win-win. Help someone you care about to flip their switch and it will expedite you flipping your own.

A VEGETARIAN DESSERT WITH A WHOLE GRAIN OAT TOPPING INSTRUCTIONS Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a cast iron pan or 8 inch square baking dish and set aside. Toss the rhubarb with sugar, cinnamon and either cornstarch or flour. Place in baking dish. In a mixing bowl, add all the topping ingredients, except the butter, and mix together. Add the butter and cut it into the oat mixture with a pastry cutter. You can also use your hands to do
this, breaking up the butter cubes and mixing to create a crumbly topping. Sprinkle this over the rhubarb mixture. Bake for 35-45 minutes or until bubbling. If the top is browning too quickly, you can cover it with tinfoil and then remove the foil for the last 10 minutes of baking to finish crisping up the top. When fully cooked the rhubarb should be tender and the topping golden brown. A llow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving with vanilla ice cream.

ecognized as a high-quality food source, dietary supplement, and medicine for thousands of years, flaxseed has long been cultivated for its beneficial qualities. With applications in everything from woodworking to ayurvedic medicine, it is easy to see the importance this crop holds to human health and development. Found
at most supermarkets, this ancient super food is easily accessible to the average health-conscious consumer. Flaxseed is truly a super food. It's soybeanlike nutritional profile is rich in amino acids and contains compounds that reduce inflammation. It's a great source of dietary fiber, omega-3s and other essential fatty acids. It's packed with protein, vitamins, minerals and
lignans. With omega-3s being known to support heart health, and lignans showing evidence of exhibiting anti-cancer properties, it’s easy to see why flaxseed makes a great addition to a healthy diet. For dietary purposes, flaxseed is sold in two basic varieties: golden and brown. Having little nutritional difference, golden flaxseed is generally considered the tastier choice. You may decide to use whole seed, ground, or oil preparations, depending on the preferred method of ingestion and the desired health benefits. The whole seed or ground form is generally considered best. Occasionally taken as a part of a digestive cleanse, if ingested in large quantities whole flaxseed may upset your stomach. Supplementing with flaxseed oil can often be the most effective way to incorporate large
amounts of the beneficial compounds into your diet. With many options on the market, take some time to consider which form is right for you. Flaxseed is delicious. Its subtle sweet and nutty flavor and texture lends itself well to breads and baked goods. Finding new recipes to try out may end up being the favorite part of your supplement regimen. Used in everything from pasta to smoothies, flaxseed can provide a nutritious, flavorful addition to any meal. Consider adding it to granola, sprinkling over stir-fry, or even topping a cake with toasted candied flaxseed! With a flavor profile that adapts well to savory or sweet dishes, and a nutritional profile full of beneficial nutrients, flaxseed is easily one of the top choices in health foods.

YOUR SOUL
Broccoli sprouts are one of the stars among superfoods. Did you know that just a handful of broccoli sprouts are as nutritious as a whole head of broccoli? They are 50x as potent as fully grown broccoli. Doctors are recommending them because of their anti-carcinogenic cancer fighting properties! Additionally, they are a good source of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, calcium, iron, and protein, and are particularly sought-after for their high concentration of antioxidants. A powerful antioxidant found in broccoli sprouts may help protect the heart from high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. A new study shows the compound called glucoraphanin, helped improve heart health, fight inflammation, and boost natural defense systems against oxidative stress. Glucoraphanin is one of a group of chemicals that act as an indirect antioxidant that raises the body antioxidant defense systems. When ingested glucoraphanin is converted into sulforaphane.

option you try before undergoing certain types of invasive surgical procedures. On a daily basis, we continue to see a myriad of patients that come to us complaining about joint pain even after having had surgery, a large percentage of them suffering with back / spine pain related issues in particular. Therefore, my objective here is to reiterate the importance of understanding that if a patient already has a titanium implant on their back (or basically any other foreign object implanted on another joint), our doctors would be somewhat limited to further treat your existing pain. In the case of the spine
Ingrid Machado, CEO Ingrid Machado (305) 598-7777 CFO info@miamistemcell.co
(a critical area and prime example of what I am trying to convey here), our treatments are restricted to only certain specific areas that they can target after a surgical procedure, since we could not treat the actual titanium implanted vertebrate and thus, lessening the powerful benefits of our Regenerative Medicine Treatments. In addition, invasive surgeries involve many correlated troublesome issues, like the risk of general anesthesia, health complications, required extensive physical therapy sessions and also long periods of downtime, all of which could be avoided using our non-invasive Stem Cell Therapy option. When a patient is considering the use of Regenerative Treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Bone Marrow Aspirate (BMAC), commonly called ‘Stem Cells’ or mixtures with Biological products for treatment, the amount needed and location of the injection depends on the part of the body treated. Research evidence shows that injected biologics have a mixture of multiple cellular growth factors that work by ‘boosting’ the body’s healing of the injured area through accelerated but very localized inflammation in the site injected ultimately leading to tissue healing. Soft tissue such as muscle, tendons, capsules of joints and parts of the intervertebral disc are the targets for this type of treatment.
Otto Marke

The spine in particular is different than larger joints such as the knee, shoulder or hip in several important ways. First, these are larger joints that are easier to localize and inject, have mainly tendons running within them that can partially or completely torn which is best suited for biologic treatments. Larger quantities of biologic material can be easily injected in these areas. However, in the spine there are 3 additional critical factors whether in the low back (lumbar) or neck (cervical). First, each vertebral segment includes an intervertebral disc as well as 2 small joints (facets) on each side at each level so in the spine this can degeneration frequently occurs in multiple joints. Second, the nerve roots are located between the disc and the joints and the spinal cord in the neck and nerve sac (dural sac) in the lumbar spine is important and then precise placement of the injection is critical and should be per-
formed only by a specialist with spine training and not who does occasional injections in this area. Therefore, it is critical that the patient have up to date diagnostic films including plain X-rays and MRI scan and possibly even a CT scan, so the spine specialist can locate the exact site of the pathology and discuss with the patient whether it is local to one area or side or more general. Since it is the small spinal joints, their surrounding tissue and the intervertebral discs that are targeted, biologics are more effective before severe degeneration and bone overgrowth occurs which can be seen on these radiologic studies. The goal of the treatment is to both decrease pain and allow some resolution of the soft tissue swelling of the disc and joints. In conclusion, the cellular immunotherapy space has exploded over the past few years and we are now entering the cell therapy revolution.
The progress in this space has been unprecedented and Miami Stem CellÂŽ has always been at the forefront using the latest technology and state-of-theart procedures to control pain. WEST COAST UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WITH COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION
Shine
When measuring an educational institution’s success, student accomplishments are a crucial aspect to factor into the equation. One institution preparing students with a quality and comprehensive education for achievements beyond the classroom is West Coast University (WCU). WCU employs a student-centric approach aimed at personalizing each individual’s academic journey and prides itself on the success of its students. One such case is that of Stephanie Hannah, a WCU alumna who was given the tools to pursue her dream career. Before graduating in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), she already had an offer to join Duke University Hospital in North Carolina as an emergency room nurse. Since her first visit to WCU, she was provided with customized academics and professional development opportunities. “Walking into the university was a different feeling,” said Hannah, “I just knew this is where I belonged.” She decided to further her education at WCU and is currently pursuing her Master’s of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN) to become a Nurse Educator. The university’s Career Services Department, led by Georgeta Railic, a higher education professional with more than 24 years of experience, focuses on providing a varied array of career resources including community partnerships with the state’s top hospitals, personalized career planning, interview preparation and more. Railic believes that what makes WCU stand out against other programs is “the unique quality of education our students receive which leads to impeccable outcomes.” Focused on her career goals, Hannah worked

alongside WCU faculty and staff to get valuable professional experience in ER nursing, which prepared her for her current role at Duke University Hospital. “Over the years, West Coast University has built visibility in the community because of our army of successful alumni that represent
us,” Railic said, “their success is our success.” And the feeling is mutual, as dozens of successful alumni, like Hannah, continue to be deeply involved with the university, serving as mentors for up-and-coming graduates. When it comes to education, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. In an ever-evolving and competitive workforce, personalized education is more valuable than ever. WCU helps students stay ahead by prioritizing their individual goals and needs. In the words of Railic, WCU is “encouraging and preparing all future and prospective students to be the best healthcare professionals they can be.”

KENDALL AUDIOLOGY TEAMS UP WITH THE NFL PLAYERS ASSOCIATION BEFORE SUNDAY’S BIG GAME Before Sunday’s big game, Dr. Daisy Elwick from Kendall Audiology, joined the HearStrong Foundation and the NFL Players Association in Miami, Florida, at Smocks and Jocks, a charitable art auction that benefits the livelihood of former professional football players. Dr. Elwick is a preferred provider for the NFL Players Association’s Professional Athletes Foundation, and partner of the HearStrong Foundation. This allows her to work with professional athletes across the country, spread awareness about hearing care, and share the stories of remarkable people with hearing loss. In Miami, Dr. Elwick nominated one of her patients, Colby Ferris, to be recognized by HearStrong because of his dedication to helping people understand hearing loss. Founded in 2013, HearStrong is a non-profit organization, sponsored by EarQ and the NFLPA, with a mission to radically challenge the general perception of hearing and inspire a mass
hearing healthcare awareness movement. For Colby, hearing aids helped shape him into the confident young man he is today. Colby is a young student athlete and enjoys playing basketball and football. His positive attitude and desire to help others with hearing loss is why Dr. Elwick nominated him to be a HearStrong Champion. “I’ve had hearing aids for so long and I never felt different from other people” says Colby. “Maybe that will help others find confidence within themselves.” Organizations such as HearStrong and the NFL Players Association’s Professional Athletes Foundation work diligently to provide information and resources for those with hearing loss. By partnering with these organizations, Kendall Audiology is further helping advocate for the 80% of people who have not treated their hearing loss. Advocacy-focused events like Smocks and Jocks are just one of the ways the NFLPA’s Professional Athletes Foundation is propelling the hearing healthcare movement forward. Kendall Audiology’s participation with these events helps advocates like Colby broaden their platforms to inspire others to be proactive against hearing loss. Dr. Elwick explains why events like these are so important: “Being able to change lives through hearing care is the most gratifying thing I’ve ever experienced” says Dr. Elwick. “I hope to reach as many people in need for as long as I can.” To learn more about Kendall Audiology and their work with HearStrong and the NFLPA, please call (305) 595-1530.

DID YOU UNDERESTIMATE YOUR INCOME TO REDUCE YOUR HEALTH CARE AND COVERAGE COSTS?
WHAT MAY HAPPEN IF YOU RECEIVE AN UNWARRANTED SUBSIDY For most, January is when they will be charged their first 2020 Health Insurance Plan premium. The good news is for many rate increases were minor with most being less than 3%. Some people even received rate reductions. Individual and family outof-pocket maximums also increased in the 3% range to $8150 for individual and $16,300 for family. Even with the minor increase health coverage costs remain high. Non-subsidized premiums for the better, Gold and Silver plans, can range from $1000/mo for individual to $3000/mo for family coverage. Paying $12,000 to $36,000 annually for premiums and still needing to meet deductibles ranging from $8150 to $16,300 is the reason some people feel “I pay a lot for my health insurance and it doesn’t cover anything. That disconnect can cause some to misrepresent their income. Be aware, the health coverage subsidy is based upon gross, not net, income.
The ACA/Obamacare marketplace was developed to help those making between 100% and 400% of the poverty level. It allows for people to pay for their coverage on a sliding scale. The sliding scale is determined by age and income. The younger you are and the less you make the lower the premium you must pay. The premium itself doesn’t change. This is an extremely important point. The premium isn’t reduced by the insurer. The premium cost is reduced because the government pays part of it.

As stated previously, the high costs of health care and coverage and the attractiveness of the subsidy can lead some people to engage in practices that can be financially costly. It may lead some to understate their income. They obviously are not making between 100% and 400% of the poverty level. The government often catches such people. We’ve all heard of people that have received a health coverage bill upon filing of their Income Tax. What must be remembered, if one understates income, the government will balance bill for the portion they paid. See below.

WOMEN WHO INSPIRE TEARS, SWEAT,AND STRENGTH FOLLOWING A DEVASTATING BREAKUP I THOUGHT I COULD NOT OVERCOME, I TOOK MY FRUSTRATIONS TO THE GYM AND TURNED SORROW INTO SWEAT, ONE INTENSE WORKOUT AT A TIME. For the next 60 days I joined a TV fitness personality in my living room and sweated, lunged, sweated, squatted – did I mention sweated? The first couple of weeks were brutal. I questioned my own ability to complete even just a 40-minute workout. Soon, however, I started finding my groove. I learned how to channel the anger and hurt into strength to do one more pushup. I would focus so intently on the exercise at-hand that I completely drowned out the voice in my head telling me every reason I had to quit. After my 60 day fitness venture, I had dropped over 10 pounds, found muscle definition where none had ever been before – and while the physical results were far better than I had imagined, it’s what it did for me mentally that forever changed how I thought about myself. I had a better sense of being and no longer equated love from others to my self-worth. I was stronger mentally and realized my ability to commit was there all along – I just didn’t have my focus set on the right things. In a nutshell, by the end of this journey I literally came out a different person. Amanda Hines is a 29¾-year-old advertising executive living in Boston.

1. TIME TRAVEL. If your schedule permits, why not travel back to the place where you first met, kissed or, if you’re married, got engaged? In every relationship, there are dozens of special “firsts.” The key is finding the one that is the most meaningful for you and reliving it together. Talk about

2. UNPLUG. Electronics are everywhere — they’re in our homes, cars, pockets, purses and bare hands almost every minute of the day. They’re also on just about every dining table in the country. Unless you’re on call with the hospital, you can probably afford to have a meal without the interruption of a ringtone. Put it away and pay attention to the person in front of you. They will appreciate it more than you know.
4. AGREE TO DISAGREE. Not every conflict needs a resolution. It takes two people to make a relationship — two different people, with different backgrounds, points of view and opinions. So there will be spats. And arguments. And full-on, knock-down, drag-out fights. It’s important to know the difference. Arguing about toothpaste brands or how much to feed the dog just isn’t worth the trouble. Make the effort to concede here and there as a peace offering.

here are many reasons to say “I love you” to the special people in our lives: because it’s a new year, because it’s Valentine’s Day, and because it’s just the right thing to do, isn’t it? The question is how to say it. Not to worry. Here at Inspire Health, we’ve got you covered.

it when you’re there. You’re sure to remind each other of things that were long forgotten. It’s almost impossible not to smile when immersed in the happy memory that first brought you together.
3. CHANGE YOUR SHOES. Try looking at life from a different perspective. Maybe he’s a big outdoorsman but you’ve never spent a night in a tent. Or she’s a theater lover but you’ve never even seen “Cats”. It’s time to put your interests second. Make a plan to do something from his or her favorite list of pastimes. Worst case scenario? You make them happy, even if you didn’t enjoy the activity. Best case scenario? You now have a new hobby you can enjoy together.

eafy greens are one of the best veggies you can eat. They’re full of nutrients and they’re easy to serve raw, steamed, or sautéed. In this simple salad, I roasted cauliflower and topped with two of my favorite detoxifying leafy greens, arugula and spinach, and a creamy tahini dressing. This recipe is naturally free of gluten, dairy, soy, refined sugar, and other inflammatory foods so it’s the perfect lunch or dinner salad to enjoy anytime of the year. Feel free to use more garlic if you like more of a kick to your dressing. In my book, Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body, I talk about how certain foods cause inflammation in our body and how to add in more whole, anti-inflammatory foods like those in this recipe. The purple cabbage and heirloom tomato add a subtle sweetness along with the honey and raw almonds without having to add any refined sugar. This recipe takes about 30 minutes to prepare, so you can have it on the table on a rushed weeknight meal for your family, or savor it on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Enjoy!

SERVES 4 • 1 head organic cauliflower, cut into ½ inch florets • 1 tbsp avocado oil • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste • 4 ½ tbsp tahini • Juice of 1 large lemon • 2 tsp honey or pure maple syrup • 1 medium clove garlic, minced • Hot water, as needed • 2 cups arugula • 2 cups baby spinach • 1 cup thinly sliced purple cabbage • 1 large heirloom tomato, diced • 1 small English cucumber, diced • 2 tbsp raw almonds Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Prepare a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay the cauliflower florets onto
the prepared baking sheet and drizzle with the avocado oil, using your hands to coat each cauliflower floret. Season with sea salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes or until the cauliflower is golden brown and tender. Remove from the oven and set aside. Meanwhile, whisk together the tahini, lemon juice, honey, minced garlic, and a few teaspoons of hot water in a small bowl. Add more hot water as needed, to thin out the dressing to your desired consistency. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the roasted cauliflower, arugula, spinach, cabbage, tomato, and cucumber. Drizzle with the tahini dressing and gently toss to coat. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper. Garnish with raw almonds and serve immediately.

Volumetrics WEIGHT LOSS
&MAINTENANCE
Imagine being able to eat more, lose weight, and feel energized. Volumetrics claims to do just that.
A
re you sick of feeling hungry, tired, and deprived due to low-carbohydrate, low-calorie, or low-fat diets? If your answer is yes, you have more than likely joined the millions of Americans who have lost weight, and then regained
1
it with additional pounds. Volumetrics takes a completely different approach to weight loss. This nutritional plan, created by Barbara Rolls PhD, doesn’t follow the current trends of structured eating that limits food and deprives our bodies of essential nutrients. While many diets on
the market simply promise weight loss, Volumetrics encourages individuals to lose weight and keep it off while eating more and feeling full. Plus, the plan is flexible enough for vegetarians, vegans, and those who need to restrict salt and fat. Volumetrics focuses on finding specific healthy, filling food. According to Dr. Rolls, “People feel full because of the types and amounts of foods they eat – not because of the number of calories or the grams of fat, protein, or carbs. So, the trick is to fill up on the right foods with fewer calories.” Volumetrics is a longterm plan that means you will not necessarily lose weight quickly. Instead, the
goal is to change your lifestyle and work toward permanent weight loss and maintenance. To be successful, you must meet specific daily calorie goals and daily step goals for movement and exercise. The plan allows you to eat whatever you please, while paying attention to energy density. Energy density simply refers to the number of calories in a specific amount of food. Foods with high energy density have lots of calories for less volume, while foods with low energy density provide fewer calories with more volume. The following four categories of food will allow you to begin your weight loss journey through Volumetrics.
DR. ROLLS SPLITS FOODS INTO FOUR CATEGORIES: CATEGORY 1 includes “free” or “anytime” fruits, nonstarchy vegetables (such as broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms), and broth-based soups.
CATEGORY 2 includes reasonable portions of whole grains (such as brown rice and whole wheat pasta), lean proteins, legumes, and low-fat dairy.
CATEGORY 3 includes small portions of foods such as breads, desserts, fat-free baked snacks, cheeses, and higher-fat meats.
For more information about Volumetrics, refer to: Volumetrics by Barbara Rolls, PhD and Robert A. Barnett
CATEGORY 4 includes sparing portions of fried foods, candy, cookies, nuts, and fats.
You’ll eat three meals, two snacks, and a dessert each day.
EXERCISE
You’ll start by adding 150 steps a day to your routine, using a pedometer. The first goal is to reach an extra 1,000 steps by the end of the week. The ultimate goal is to log 10,000 steps a day.

Next year will mark the presentation of the 250th workshop dramatically demonstrating how doubt and fear can be transformed into power - turning “limitations into freedom.” During the workshops, guests from all walks of life willingly choose to walk across hot coals during an empowering firewalk; take a stroll across broken glass; split wooden boards; bend iron rods or break arrows pressed up against their throats; and free-fall into the arms of “trusted” catchers as they discover how the seemingly impossible can become inevitable when limiting beliefs are changed. “When you witness or physically experience something that seems impossible or challenging your whole sense of self expands,” Shank says. “We hope to give you meaning for your life …You will always remember the ‘firewalk.’ There’s no pressure to go outside your comfort zone - but

you’re invited to do so because when you step through your perception of what’s possible for you here your sense of what’s possible in life expands. “During a workshop you’ll have the opportunity to walk barefoot on hot coals. That may bring up some doubt and fear – and that’s ok… It’s not about becoming fearless - it’s about how we let doubt and fear affect us when they show up in our lives. “Helen Keller once said, ‘Life is a daring adventure – or nothing.’ She was talking about living powerfully with enthusiasm and a thirst for growth – embracing risk and change and going beyond personal limitations. No matter where we’re at, could there be more of that daring adventure quality in our lives? What’s stopping you? “Common reference points we call ‘the terrible too’s’ such as too hard; too busy; too scared support limitations and create barriers preventing us from seeing infinite possibilities…What we choose to pay attention to will always change our experience…We can achieve anything we want to and change barriers that stand in our way through the power of focus.” Intention, commit-
ment, trust and faith are also integral components supporting the goal to achieve “Living Without Limits.” The “new decision tool kit” Shank advocates features self-improvement mantras including: “Where my attention goes – my power goes” and “Expect the best – turn on the power of positive thinking.” The adventurous workshops culminate with the firewalk - a tribal custom practiced throughout recorded history as a rite of purification, healing, initiation and devotion. As young professionals, seniors, couples and singles walk across the hot coals experiencing no pain or discomfort whatsoever, they shout out positive affirmations ranging from peace, happiness, love and laughter – to the hope for a new day marking the end of “doubt and fear.” Workshop guests reveling in their new-found revelations about “Living Without Limits” concur with rave review testimonials Shank is always honored to receive such as: “I knew I wasn't the same person who arrived earlier that evening. Never again would I let 'impossible' be part of my reasoning...I can do anything!” and "Thank you for the most incredible, eye-opening, mind-expanding experience of my life."

THE BEST DETOX BATH EVER
A DETOX BATH CAN HELP YOU RELAX WHILE CLEANSING YOUR SKIN, RIDDING YOUR BODY OF TOXINS AND INCREASING BLOOD FLOW AND OXYGEN TO YOUR ENTIRE BODY.
H
ydrotherapy, an ancient practice used by many cultures over centuries has phenomenal healing properties for both the body and soul. A detox bath is an almost effortless way to cleanse your system, and it feels good too! Taking the time to soak a few times per week can do wonders for your health, deepening the mind body connection. Due to pollution and other environmental toxins, everyone builds up toxins, harmful chemicals, and heavy metals in their system; a detox bath can help eliminate these. Among the numerous benefits of detox baths are: a stronger immune system, increased blood flow and circulation and decreased stress and anxiety. Many day spas provide various types of detox baths, but it is also simple to draw a detox bath for yourself. This allows you to control the quality of the ingredients, and you can gauge your reaction to the bath, making it shorter or longer if needed.
HOW IT WORKS? The restorative and healing properties of hydrotherapy are based on two components, the mechanical and the thermal effects of water. Since cold and hot water has different effects of the body, the ability to manipulate the temperature of water is one advantage of hydrotherapy. Heat quiets and soothes the body, slowing down the activity of internal organs while colder temperatures stimulate and enliven internal activity. For stress, anxiety or tense muscles, a hot shower or bath is suggested. If you are feeling tired or particularly sluggish and unmotivated, try a warm bath or shower followed by a short cold shower to help stimulate your body and mind. The pressure of water is also another element that can be manipulated in hydrotherapy; pressure variations result in different sensations. The nerves play a key role in hydrotherapy; the carry impulses felt at the skin journey deeper into the body. Positive nerve stimulation

has the ability to stimulate the immune system, influence the production of stress hormones (producing more or less), invigorates circulation and digestion, and kindles blood flow, thereby reducing pain. Water submersion is a unique experience; it is an event where the body feels nearly weightless. For a moment, it can feel like the pull of gravity has less mastery over your body. If you have a jet tub, take advantage of it. When water gently kneads the body, it can create a blissful state of instant euphoria, and unbeknownst to you, extraordinary things happen deep within the body’s system. CREATE YOUR SPA DAY 1. Fill your bath tub with comfortably warm water. Water that is too hot can dehydrate the skin and cause mild exhaustion. 2. Add “ The Best Detox Bath Ever” mixture. (See below) 3. If you have a jet tub, set it at a kneading speed/pressure that is comfortable for you. 4. Soak in the tub for 10-15 minutes at first. After you gauge the effects the bath has on you, you can gradually increase your time with each detox bath. 5. For best results, take a detox bath no more than 2-3 times per week. 6. Follow the bath with a room temperature glass of water.
Inspire Health’s “The Best Detox Bath Ever” Mixture: l1 cup of Himalayan pink salt crystals (see suggested product on page 28). l1 cup of Epsom salt l3 tablespoons of avocado oil l3 teaspoons of glycerin l10 drops of lavender, rose or sandalwood essential oil Stir the mixture until well blended and store in a sealed and glass jar.You can use the mixture for 2-3 detox baths. * If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, heart disease or if you are pregnant, consult your healthcare practitioner before doing any form of detox.

hildhood was once a time of unstructured afternoons, hours of imaginative play, and even the occasional boredom. Today’s children have nearly the complete opposite as their time is scheduled to the minute with an overload of school work and activities.
It’s no wonder many children are feeling anxious and stressed. Believe it or not, of the diseases that afflict children, mental health disorders are the most common, according to the Child Mind Institute. While it’s important to know the specific triggers and reactions to stress to which your child is prone,

SINCE KIDS ARE CREATIVE CREATURES, A LITTLE INNOVATION MAY GO A LONG WAY IN MOTIVATING THEM TO CRUNCH ON A VEGGIE OR TWO. THESE THREE TIPS CAN HELP MAKE VEGGIE TIME A FUN TIME. 1. GET CREATIVE. Play with the shapes and texture of fruits and vegetables to make them more appealing to children. Slice apples or other fruits into thin sections and then use a cookie cutter to make animal or flower shapes. Also, try adding vegetables, such as spinach or carrots, to fruit smoothies; this will provide a boost of nutrients without impacting the fruity flavor.

Create opportunities for kids to be active Kids need parents to make activity easy by providing equipment (balls, bikes, weights). Also, parents need to make it a point to schedule time to take toddlers to playgrounds or older kids to sporting activities or gyms. The best way for kids to get physical activity is by incorporating physical activity into their daily routine.
Keep kids active ANYONE WHO’S SEEN KIDS ON A PLAYGROUND KNOWS THAT MOST TODDLERS ARE NATURALLY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE AND LOVE TO MOVE AROUND. IN FACT, IT IS EVEN MORE OF A CHALLENGE FOR THEM TO SIT STILL THAN IT IS FOR THEM TO MOVE. WHEN YOU, AS THE PARENT, ARE EXHAUSTED BY THE DAY’S END, IT MAY BE DIFFICULT TO THINK ABOUT SHIFTING GEARS TO EXERCISE. BUT,YOUR PERSISTENT EFFORTS ARE WORTH IT. IN FACT, DID YOU KNOW THAT IF YOUR CHILD IS INVOLVED IN ACTIVITY AT AN EARLY AGE IT CAN ACTUALLY HELP THEM LEAD A LIFETIME OF BEING ACTIVE? When kids get a little older and settle down a bit more, you then have the challenge of motivating them to get enough daily activity. As kids mature, like adults, they have increased demands made on them. Some challenges may include: lots of homework, peer pressure, busy parents, or they may not feel athletically inclined. Furthermore, this day and age, parents are more reluctant to let children roam the neighborhood in search of play time. Opportunities might seem limited, but when parents set the example, children feel more encouraged to be active too. In fact, when parents seek to establish healthy patterns
in their children, these can last into adulthood; and healthy, physically active kids have been shown to be more likely to be academically motivated, alert, and successful. Choose an age appropriate activity. Chances are your pre-teen will not enjoy going to a toddler park. Activities need to be based on skill and age. If an activity is too easy or even too difficult, the child may become either bored or frustrated and resent physical activity. Some kids may be naturally drawn to non-contact sports like swimming, tennis, or running. Encourage them to follow an activity that fits their nature or personality.
1. As a family, take a walk or ride bikes each evening before dinner. 2. When planning “play” dates for young kids, focus on the “play” by planning an outdoor fun activity for them. 3. Encourage tweens and older kids to explore sports until they find one they truly enjoy. 4. Focus on fun: Kids will not stick with something that feels like work. If they enjoy the activity, they will want to do more of it. If kids are involved in competitive sports, encourage them to have fun too. Certain caution is needed so that parents do not pressure kids into becoming overly competitive. The most important thing is not the number of points they score but that they are physically moving and improving their health. General guidelines are children 6 to 17 years should perform 60 minutes or more physical activity each and every day. Is your child getting at least that? If not, it begins with you. ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO MOVE by making movement fun and by taking the lead in doing so! INSPIRE HEALTH

FETCHING HAPPINESS…
the therapeutic benefits of owning a pet By: Kelli Ewing, M.Ed., CIT, NCC, CCMHC, LPC PARENTS OF YOUNG CHILDREN ARE OFTEN POSED WITH A VARIETY OF REQUESTS FROM THEIR KIDS THROUGHOUT THEIR DEVELOPMENT. Undoubtedly, one of the most common (and often repetitive) questions goes a little something like: “Can we get a dog?? What about a cat?? Please??” If the preceding sentence mimics daily conversation in your home, read on! Research suggests that the presence of a furry creature in your household may very well provide you and your family much more than you originally expected. People are often driven to purchase or adopt pets for companionship or to serve as “playmates” for
70
INSPIRE HEALTH
the children in their families. However, recent scientific studies show that the mental health benefits of pet ownership reach far beyond this. According to L. Robinson and J. Segal, Ph.D. of Helpguide.org, studies indicate that depression is less likely in individuals who own pets as opposed to those who do not. A number of other mental health benefits among pet owners include the following: increased levels of serotonin and dopamine in the brain, lower blood pressure levels, and reduced anxiety. Also, individuals who generally have a difficult time maintaining an exercise regimen are more apt to strap on their tennis shoes for a walk with their pets after witnessing the benefits that “outside time” has on them.
Outside of the organic mental health benefits of owning a pet, animals may provide support to individuals throughout the stages of life. A young girl may learn her first lesson in responsibility by way of a new kitten. An elderly gentleman may be soothed by the warm nature of his Labrador as he comes to grips with the loss of his spouse. Regardless of our age, pets fulfill our human desire for touch. Scratching the soft underbelly of a puppy or stroking the fur of a cat can transform one’s mood and instantly ease stress. Next time you hear that all-too-familiar request from your child, consider their plea. It just might provide something that medications and doctors simply cannot.

YOUR SOUL
reparing your child’s lunch can be an activity that both you and your child can enjoy together. Make their lunch fun, colorful and filled with love. Educating young children about proper nutrition not only benefits them in the classroom, but also for their futures. This can begin by packing a healthy lunch full of all five-food groups: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and dairy. Begin by using an existing BPA free container or purchase a portable lunchbox. My personal preference is the Rubbermaid lunchbox Entrée kit which is a great option sold at most large retailers. Use containers that have different compartments, in order to preserve freshness and distinct flavors. Cupcake holders can also be used as dividers, adding a fun twist to an average lunch. Fixed ice packs conveniently allow for appropriate temperatures for perishable foods. With your child, build one of their favorite sandwiches using lean meat, such as turkey, or nut butter and all-natural jelly on whole grain bread. Remember to explain the importance of eating fruits and vegetables and how they are essential in receiving daily fiber, Vitamin C, potassium and other key vitamins, nutrients and minerals. Entertain your child using foods such as celery, adding nut butter and raisins to represent ants on a log. You can also arrange fruits to look like a rainbow and remind your child about the benefits of eating an array of colors. MIAMI AUTHOR SHARES HIS JOURNEY AND ‘WHAT EVERY SON NEEDS TO KNOW’ Q & A WITH AUTHOR KEVIN DAVIS, SR. “Who's Your Daddy? What Every Son Needs To Know” takes readers on a journey with author Kevin Davis, Sr., through his life and lets the reader in on his conversation with his son. The transparency of his story pulls is so captivating, readers simply won’t be able to put the book down. The life skills and wisdom imparted can be readily used by every parent who simply wants more for their child – by learning the importance of family, the importance of investment, establishing generational wealth, and the importance of financial literacy. INSPIRE HEALTH recently had a chance to sit down with Kevin Davis, Sr., to talk about his new book. He opened our discussion with this: KEVIN DAVIS: It was as if I was promised tomorrow the day I saw my son being born, but having a son at the age of 51 left me in fear that my time was short. So inspired by a love so intense, I began this journey to journal my life and guide him. I knew if I died tomorrow, he would be financially secure; however, I needed him to know who his father truly was in the event I didn't make it to his 18th birthday.

ABOUT KEVIN DAVIS, SR. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Kevin Davis, Sr., spent much of his childhood reciting original poems and rhymes, influenced by the hip hop craze like any other inner-city child in the 80's. As a young boy, he remembers filling up his day with superhero comic books, sitcoms, and blackand-white films. At the age of 52, deeply inspired by the birth of his son, he began to produce writings. “Who's Your Daddy? ALLERGY & ASTHMA with
Children
Having children with allergies and asthma can be daunting, scary and overwhelming if you don’t seek the care of the right specialist, the Allergist. We asked our board certified physicians for the most frequent questions they are asked by parents with recently diagnosed children. PET ALLERGIES “And now that my child is allergic to cats, do we have to let our kitty go?” First, if you have doubt about the symptoms, consult the allergist, the expert in testing and diagnosing allergies and asthma. Simple blood tests and/or skin prick tests unveil the culprit and allow for diagnosis. With mild symptoms, anti-histamines and nasal sprays are enough. The most effective treatment that helps the body desensitize over a period of time is immunotherapy (also known as “allergy shots”): it enables patients to have a better quality of life and allows them to enjoy their environment and their pets without having to constantly rely on medications or have to let family pets go.
FOOD ALLERGIES “The cafeteria in my daughter’s school doesn’t have a peanut free area and I am scared” When diagnosed with any food allergy, the only way to prevent a reaction is to avoid the food, or allergen, that is known to cause a reaction. The medicine that can save a patient from a life-threatening reaction is epinephrine which comes in friendly auto-injectors. Having a peanut-free area in the cafeteria may be a plus for children with peanut allergies, but not a solution. A reaction can be also caused by coming in contact with the protein causing the flare-up. It’s called cross-contamination when the protein one is allergic is passed by touch (hand, lips).
Latest news: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first drug to mitigate allergic reactions to peanuts for children. However, those who take it must continue to avoid peanuts. For more information please consult the allergist.

Launches Free Early ASD Screening & Parent Coaching Program With one in 59 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), research buttresses the fact that early identification and family support have long-term, positive benefits for children. Now parents in South Florida have a new resource to help them screen toddlers from 12 to 24 months old, for developmental delays and may also be eligible to participate in a national research program aimed at closing the gap between early identification of ASD and access to early intervention programs. “With small children, pediatricians and parents often take a wait and see approach,” says Dr. Michael Alessandri executive director of the University of Miami – Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD). “But what ends up happening is that some kids fall through the cracks. They are either misdiagnosed or diagnosed later, which research shows often results in longer and more intensive intervention. But that’s not necessary, because we have the researched-backed tools that allow us to screen for early signs of ASD.” Funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) and developed by UM-NSU CARD along with Florida State University, Boston University, and the University of Massachusetts Boston,

STRUCTURED PLAY: Soccer can be a fun outlet that allows one to relax and have some fun after a long day. It provides fun, while providing a structured play to have fun in a controlled setting.
10 REASONS TO EMPOWER “ASD” THROUGH
Soccer & Sports
REFINES MOTOR SKILLS.
It is common for individuals with autism to experience difficulty with motor skills. Through soccer, maneuvering the ball and practicing different techniques can greatly improve their endurance, coordination, and strength. IMPROVES COMMUNICATION: Soccer is a team sport; therefore the key to doing well is to communicate with your teammates. Soccer can help build the skills required for communication through playing and interacting with other individuals in a natural environment.
SPORTSMANSHIP: With every sport, you either win or lose. Soccer can teach individuals with autism to have fun no matter what the end score is.
SOCIAL INTERACTION: For individuals with the spectrum, social interactions can often be more challenging. Soccer can increase social interaction as the child works with an instructor, a therapist, or other individuals involved in the program. Soccer can give a positive experience with a sport, and can also help seek out lifelong friendships while learning how to take turns and partake in socially appropriate behaviors. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT: Behavior can be a big struggle for any family that has a individual with autism. An organized sport, like soccer, can improve their behavior because they have to practice listening to their instructor. Instructors use positive language to let your family member know what they can and can’t do, and give them a structured routine.
Autism Soccer is located at 109 SW 1st Street, Miami, FL 33131. For more information call 305-469-0895 or e-mail info@autismsoccer.org.

SELF-ESTEEM BOOSTER: Any individual, whether they have autism or not, gains confidence once they have mastered a skill or performed well in it. This is especially important for an individual with autism to gain confidence. In addition, self-esteem improves happiness. PROVIDES THEM WITH AN INTEREST: By participating in soccer, one will take up an interest in it, or maybe they won’t but they will get an idea of what they like or don’t like. This will help them figure out what their hobbies and interests are in the future. IMPROVES PHYSICAL FITNESS: Soccer is a physically active sport, which is good for any individual. Its especially beneficial for individuals with autism because studies show that physical activity can ease repetitive behaviors and increase attention span. IMPROVES AUDITORY PROCESSING: By listening to the soccer instructors’ clear and simple instructions about how to perform a technique, will greatly improve their ability to follow directions, which in turn will improve their auditory processing.

SPEECH AND LANGUAGE by Ashley Cunill, M.S. CCC-SLP Speech disorders occur when a child has difficulty producing speech sounds correctly or fluently. Language disorders occur when a child has trouble understanding others (receptive language) or sharing thoughts and feelings (expressive language). This will produce difficulty with communicating for social purposes like greeting, commenting, asking questions, talking in different ways to suit the listener and setting, and following rules for conversation and storytelling. 0

Occupational Therapy, or OT; and Speech Therapy, to name just a few.“ Gaining a better understanding of these terms is a good first step to truly managing the roles and responsibilities that ASD often brings. Following is a brief description of what is known as the three pillars of therapy intervention for children diagnosed with Autism.These therapies are researched and data based, and provide a clear understanding of the goals and progress of children with ASD. Raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder can be overwhelming for parents and families.When a child is first diagnosed, those serving in the role of caregiver often find themselves immersed in a whole new world of terms and expressions that are associated with ASD. Says Mary Palacio-Pike founder of Coral Gables based Crystal Academy and mother of a 17 year old son with Autism, “They begin hearing about things such as Applied Behavior Analysis, often referred to as ABA;
APPLIED BEHAVIOR ANALYSIS (ABA) by Lauren Katz, MS, BCBA ABA is a therapy and teaching method that is individualized to each child and used to teach socially significant skills. The main areas ABA focuses on are social skills, communication, daily-living skills, play skills, self-management, and inappropriate behavior reduction. ABA shapes behaviors and skills through positive reinforcement. It can be practiced in any setting and is most effective when the family and therapist work together. ABA uses only treatments that have been proven effective by research. Data are collected to ensure appropriate development and that maladaptive behaviors are reduced. A board-certified behavior analyst (BCBA) oversees the program and makes any necessary changes based on the data.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) diagnose, assess, and treat and/or prevent speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (OT) by Liz Acuna, MS, OTR/L, INPP Autism often manifests a list of inappropriate or ineffective behaviors including but not limited to poor communication, poor frustration tolerance, decreased attention, poor impulse control, and immature motor skills. All the signs listed are symptoms of inefficient processing on a neurological level. A skilled OT will assess a variety of motor skills, big muscles, tiny muscles, integration of skills, presence and absence of primitive and postural reflexes, etc., to make a road map of where the brain is not optimally processing information. Based on this, the OT will design a plan of goals and use evidence-based treatment methods to address the foundation of the breakdown in processing in order to maximize functional independence and quality of life. According to Palacio-Pike, ABA, SLP and OT therapists also provide training and education to family/caregivers and other professionals. “It is ideal that all three domains work collaboratively for the benefit and progress of the child,” she continued. “Length of treatment time and intensity varies with each child, but consistency and frequency are always important.”
