Inevitably in a community like ours, there are rules and regulations essential for the good running of the College, and the impression it makes within the wider community. Above all, members of the College should treat those around them as they would like to be treated. Any unpleasantness directed at any member of the College or the wider community will not be tolerated.
The College Guidelines apply throughout the year. They also apply to individuals or groups away from College on sport or study trips, during the weekend or holidays and when travelling to and from College at the beginning or end of term.
These guidelines, which are revised each year, are given to all students when they enter the College. They can also be found online in the Padworth Students team. Students are asked to sign to confirm that they are familiar with these Guidelines during induction.
If you would like to read further information on the Padworth College policies, you can do so here.
At Padworth College our teaching and academics focus on:
Helping students to gain a deep understanding of their subjects and developing the skills to apply their knowledge to different contexts.
Enabling students to learn how to think, make sound judgements and respond to questions and challenges –to be active learners.
Allowing students to pursue their individual academic interests within the context of their subject to develop their independence and joy of learning.
Nurturing a close relationship between student and teacher to support each student’s overall personal development.
Students should aim to exceed expectations as the best way to take responsibility for their own learning. Therefore, you should always:
Work to the very best of your ability.
Take pride and care in your work and present it well.
Arrive punctually so that lessons can start on time.
Arrive with all necessary equipment. Be correctly dressed.
Keep up to date with their work and submit all Prep on time.
Respect the learning environment created by the teacher.
Respect the right of others to learn in their own way.
Keep your work organised.
During your classes you will be given by all subject teachers at regular intervals. Prep will develop the students’ skills, consolidate understanding and develop their English. 6

To help with the progression and development of each student, and to ensure that clear communication about your educational journey is provided, formal, written reports are published to students and parents at the end of each term. The purpose of each report is to indicate a student’s progress and attitude to learning to date.
Student’s will also receive a progress report each half term.
Students will review each report with their Tutor during Tutor time. Together in a one-to-one meeting they will highlight areas of strengths and identify areas for improvement.
During this discussion their Tutor will help to set specific, personalised SMART targets for improvement. Students will be encouraged to reflect on academic performance and achievements in the following ways: Academic achievements. Targets.
Contribution to whole College e.g. activities taken part in. Participation in class discussion. Listening to the views of others. Co-operating in group work.
Reflecting on your own values and those of others. Responding to issues in a mature and sensitive way.
Each student is treated as an individual and their development and well-being is the top priority for our team, who are always ready to offer advice and support. We place great importance on caring for our students and supporting them in all aspects of their lives at the College. Our aim is to create a happy and secure environment with an atmosphere which is relaxed and yet purposeful, where the needs of the individual are recognised and respected.
At Padworth each student will be assigned a Tutor and will belong to a Tutor group.
The Tutor plays a central role in integrating students into their class/tutor group and into the culture of Padworth. It is their responsibility to get to know each tutee and help them to achieve academic success and personal progression, which is why students will see their tutor at the start of every day.
It is important that students raise any concerns they may have regarding their academic or social welfare at Padworth with their Tutor.
All students when they arrive at Padworth College will be placed into a house. There are four houses at Padworth College organised vertically and mixed-gendered. The four houses are:
London
Belfast
Cardiff
Edinburgh
Each house is overseen by a member of house staff and they support guide and mentor the students in conjunction with their tutors. During the year there will be many House activities and competitions, fostering a sense of community and team spirit.
House points are rewarded for a very good piece of academic work that is above the student’s aspirational grade. The student produces exemplary work that is high achieving in terms of attainment, or their attitude to learning goes above and beyond what is required for the task. They are also awarded by any member of staff for the outstanding application of the college character virtues. This can be in lessons or activities, especially when leading others or when volunteering. Students will receive certificates for 15 HP, 20HP and 25HP.
All students will have the opportunity to gain privileges within the College. Privileges will be discussed and agreed upon with teachers/house staff/tutors/Senior Leadership.
Any student may be awarded a commendation for an excellent piece of academic work, excellent effort or achievement in any College activity.
Any student may receive a prize at the end of year Prize Giving Ceremony for exceptional performance or attitude in an academic subject, or for consistently demonstrating College virtues.
Every 2 weeks students can be nominated for Principal’s Break. Staff will be asked to nominate students who have lived out the values and virtues of the College; students who might otherwise not gain recognition. 12
Padworth College is dedicated to supporting students in their journey into maturity. As a College we understand and listen to students, have a real interest in their lives and an obligation to support their development. All students will have the chance to reflect on their behaviour and consider how to improve it for better outcomes. The College will provide support to help students grow positively and contribute to the College community.
A consequence may be set by a teacher if a student fails to hand in homework or has not tried hard enough in their work. A student may be asked to spend reflection time with their teachers during break or lunch for not meeting the teachers or College expectations. A student may be given a ‘Consequence’ for poor behaviour or appearance by any member of staff. House Staff, Tutors and Assistant Principals will monitor student behaviour and implement further supportive measures for students if necessary.
Students who receive multiple consequences may have their privileges removed by teachers/house staff/tutors and Senior Leadership. E.g., the phone being taken for a period of time, the use of the fitness suite restricted etc…
College detention time for all students is on Thursday evenings from 4 – 5pm. It will be supported by the College teachers.
Students will only be placed in a college detention if the supportive measures put in place by teachers/tutors, House Team, Assistance Principals and Head of Boarding have not had a positive impact on the student's behaviour. Students who exhibit major behavioural concerns may also be given this support.
The Head's reflection time for all students is on Saturday evenings from 6.30 – 8pm. This supportive session, led by the Head, allows students to discuss their behaviour and the steps they plan to take to improve. This reflection time is for students who have not responded positively to previous support measures and for serious breaches of the student code of conduct.
One-to-one coaching and mentoring meetings
All boarding students within their house will have the opportunity to have one-to-one coaching and mentoring meetings with the house staff to support and complement the personal tutoring session within the day.
Students who need support in their punctuality or turning their lights out at the correct times may be given an early bedtime or and early rise to support their understanding.
For certain and continued offences, a student may be gated. This is a House-based punishment, awarded by House staff or Senior Leadership which precludes socialising during student free time. An hourly ‘gating sheet’ must be signed by a member of staff. A student will attend all lessons, but during break and lunch will be supervised by House staff. Students will remain in their uniforms for the entire day of monitoring and support, reflecting with House staff about their behaviour, what actions caused them to be ‘gated’, and what they will do differently in the future to prevent it from happening again. A ‘gation’ can last from 3-14 days depending on the reason.
Parental support of the Rewards and Sanctions policy is a college expectation. Further details can be found in the policy.
There are many enrichment activities for you to get involved with at Padworth College. The best advice is to try different things to see what you like and what you are good at. You should also demonstrate commitment. Be aware that some run over several sessions and some last multiple terms.
There are three terms of EAs during the year. EA time takes place from 3.55 – 4.35pm, Monday to Thursday. It is expected you will attend and arrive on time. Students must choose at least two activities to complete during the week. Truanting from an EA will result in support being put in place, in line with the Rewards and Sanctions policy.
Regular College attendance is central to raising achievement and ensures all students can fulfil their potential. Students with poor attendance tend to underachieve academically, which leaves students vulnerable to falling behind.
Students and parents should take responsibility to keep absences to a minimum. If a student is absent because of illness or any other reason the College must be notified as soon as possible via email. Parents should notify the College before 7.30am if the absence is unplanned (e.g. sickness) or a week in advance if the absence is planned. All absence emails should be sent to absence@padworth.com.
If day students wish to leave College during the day, parents must email at least 24 hours in advance. A student's teacher will respond to the leave request, which will also send an email to reception to inform them of the leave. When the student is due to leave, they MUST sign out at the front reception. If they return during the day, they must sign in at reception again and report to their next lesson. Medical appointments for day students should be scheduled on weekends or holidays, and for boarding students, they should also be scheduled during holidays
Students who will be absent from lessons due to a college event should seek permission from their teachers beforehand, ideally with 24 hours' notice. Anyone who will miss a lesson for any reason must, as a courtesy, request permission from all staff whose lesson or activity will be missed.
Permission must be sought from the Principal to be absent from College for any planned event. This does not apply for College staff-organised excursions – Assistant Principals / Head of Boarding permit in these situations.
All students are expected to remain at the College until the official end of term. Dates are provided well in advance so that flights can be booked on the end-of-term date or the day after. If early departure is requested for any other reason, it must be requested in writing to the Head of Boarding.
The term dates can be found on the website here.
If a student’s attendance falls below a certain threshold, we will notify parents. This communication will highlight our concern about the impact of poor attendance on a student’s learning. We will expect parents to acknowledge this letter via email response. If low attendance continues to be a concern, we will request a meeting with the Assistant Principles.
More information can be found in the Student Absence and Attendance policy.
Students are responsible for their actions, conduct, and behavior online, just as they are responsible for them at all times.
All students receive information about e-safety and must ensure they protect themselves online, by never leaving themselves logged onto unsupervised devices and by never revealing passwords to others.
Students must reflect carefully on how much they use technology and not forget how time-consuming technology can be. The use of technology for academic purposes must be the main focus within college. The use of technology for recreational use, such as gaming, watching movies and downloading music must be in free time.
The College network and the Internet are important resources that should not be taken for granted. All students agree to abide by the College’s Acceptable Use Policy every time they log on to the Network. The Internet is a vital tool for independent research and for help with homework, and it should be used positively. Plagiarism or work that is simply copied and pasted is obvious to teachers and such actions will be dealt with accordingly.
Mobile devices may only be used in lessons at the discretion of the class teacher. Mobile phones are allowed to be used by students during the day. When using such technology outside the College or Boarding House, students should remain aware of their own safety.
Students must also remember that the use of mobile technology in public environments can appear rude and so should be avoided. Therefore, mobile phones should not be used in the dining rooms and corridors of the College, along with the use of earphones.
Your behaviour online must mirror your behaviour in everyday College life. Students should remember that the consequences of making mistakes online are the same as making mistakes in everyday life at college. Inappropriate behaviour can significantly impact others, especially considering how quickly information spreads online, and how challenging it is to remove information or comments once posted. Cyberbullying is a serious offence.
Recording still or moving images of another person without their permission is a serious offense. The camera function on student and College devices should only be used in class with teacher permission.
A detailed version of the IT policy can be found on the student teams. Students will be expected to read and sign an ICT acceptable use policy, which they should adhere to as a student at Padworth.
Students are not allowed to smoke or use e-cigarettes. Any student caught smoking, suspected of smoking, consorting with smokers, smelling of smoke, or in possession of tobacco, e-cigarettes, or smoking paraphernalia will be subject to the College’s disciplinary procedures.
Alcohol
Students must not purchase, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages while at college, when travelling to and from college, or during college trips.
Students found to have violated these guidelines will be subject to the college’s disciplinary procedures. Supplying alcohol to other students or possessing and consuming spirits or spirit-based drinks will result in an acceleration of the discipline process.
It is the policy of Padworth College to actively discourage the illegal use of controlled drugs and to treat cases of misuse by students or staff as serious misconduct.
Any student caught in possession of or using controlled drugs is likely to be asked to leave the school. Any student caught supplying or inciting the use of controlled drugs, or being in possession of them with intent to supply, will be expelled.
Please note that 'being caught' may also include convincing evidence leading the Principal to be satisfied that controlled drugs have been used or supplied.
The use of ‘legal highs’ is not allowed and will be dealt with according to the Drugs policy.
The use of protein shakes, caffeine tablets, diet pills, energy drinks and other supplements is strongly discouraged. Such items may be confiscated from students if found in their possession or misused. Students who risk their health with such items will be supported by the College.
Students should look smart, presentable and ready-to-work, or in their case, study!
Clothes and shoes must be clean, tidy, in good repair and appropriate for work. All clothes should be machine washable and suitable for tumble drying. Students who identify as transgender or gender non-binary are welcome to adhere to the dress code, as appropriate to their identity.
College dress should be worn from Monday to Friday from 8am – 4.35pm, unless the student is participating in sport, or it is a mufti day. Outside these hours, students are invited to relax and change into more comfortable clothes. The Principal has the final decision regarding the suitability of all items of dress and general appearance.
A plain polo shirt with sleeves of appropriate length and a visible collar or a cotton shirt or blouse.
Plain, full-length long tailored trousers in a dark colour or plain dark skirt, avoiding extremes of length. Dark socks or dark/opaque plain tights. Leather shoes (maximum heel 4 cm), black or brown monocoloured, not above the ankle or trainer style. Plain dark jumper or cardigan (‘V’ or round neck); no hoods/motifs, zips or pockets.
A blazer or suit style jacket may be worn if desired.
You can find our recommended packing list on our website here. Please ensure you read this this thoroughly to ensure you bring everything required.
Students are expected to purchase and wear the Padworth College branded PE kit, which can be purchased from the boarding office when you arrive. This will be charged to your account.
In addition to wearing the correct clothing students are expected to take pride in their general appearance. Members of the public frequently form their first, and perhaps only, impression of a college on superficial acquaintance. Therefore: Hair must be tidy, culturally sensitive and should not be extreme in style. Make-up should not be obvious. Students should not have visible tattoos. Headphones are not to be worn whilst moving around the college unless with special permission from staff. Chewing gum is not permitted.
Members of staff will instruct students to change into more appropriate clothing if deemed necessary. A member of staff may also issue a ‘Consequence’ if a student’s appearance fails to meet expectations. If an item of clothing does not comply with Dress Regulations, or if the clothing is in a poor state of repair, the student will be asked to change into an appropriate replacement.
Padworth College is a close-knit and friendly community. All members of the College community should behave in a way that promotes community cohesion and gives a positive impression to visitors and the public.
Violence or aggressive behaviour towards any member of the College community, whether part of a pattern of bullying or in isolation is wholly unacceptable. Padworth College does not accept bullying in any form. Bullying is behaviour by an individual or group, normally repeated over time, that intentionally hurts another individual or group either physically or emotionally, including cyber bullying.
Students are not allowed to possess offensive or dangerous weapons, lighters, fireworks, knives, air guns, laser pens etc.
Everyone at the College has the right to enjoy their learning, working, and leisure free from intimidation, oppression, discrimination, or abuse. Any actions, behaviours, or remarks that cause hurt, or offence are unacceptable.
Students should support each other by reporting all incidents of unpleasant behaviour to the appropriate person – A community has a responsibility to prevent anyone from being hurt, threatened, upset or frightened. Stealing is unacceptable in our community. Remember that borrowing without asking is stealing too.
Discriminatory or offensive words and behaviour, homophobic language and swearing in any language is unacceptable.
All those at the College are encouraged to celebrate attitude to learning and achievements of others. Students are encouraged to treat meals as pleasant social occasions.
Behaviour in lessons must allow all students the opportunity to learn and all teachers to teach.
In general, members of the College are expected to always exercise common sense and to be welcoming, friendly and polite to each other and all other people. Bringing the College into disrepute in any way may result in reflection time at the Head’s discretion.
Padworth College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.
The College’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy is available on the College website here.
Students should always show good manners in terms of communicating amongst themselves, with all staff, with all visitors and with members of the public. Everyone working in the College should be treated with respect.
E-mail and Teams are the main methods of communication between teachers and students outside and inside of lessons. E-mail and teams accounts must be checked regularly, and teachers expect responses within twenty-four hours. The tone of responses must always be formal and consider the possibility of others reading the content.
Social media tools enable students to reach audiences far beyond the College environment. This translates into a greater level of responsibility and accountability for students.
Students should be aware of what they post online. Their online contributions leave a digital footprint for all to see, and a negative online reputation can have serious consequences in the future. Students must adhere to the ‘Acceptable Use of IT’ guidelines when writing online.
Mobile phones may only be used in lessons at the discretion of the class teacher. Mobile phones are allowed to be used by students during the college day. When using such technology outside the college or boarding houses, students should remain aware of their own safety. Students must also remember that the use of mobile technology in public environments can appear rude, so it should be avoided. Therefore, mobile phones should not be used in the dining rooms and corridors of the college along with the use of earphones.
If approached by the Press and/or Media, students are asked to refer them to the Principal. Students must not speak to the media or provide them with any materials without the permission of the Principal.
Personal relationships are a particularly significant area in which values are important. Students need to understand that College is not a place for physical intimacy. It is hoped that College life will foster wide friendships rather than exclusive relationships. The following observations and guidelines should be followed as a minimum standard of conduct.
Students must always respect the feelings of others. Public behaviour should not cause embarrassment to other students, staff or the public. Members of staff will put an immediate stop to such behaviour. At all times, couples must behave in a manner that would be appropriate if a member of staff were present in the room, and in a way that would not cause embarrassment to other members of the college community.
Any students found engaging in sexual behaviour are likely to be suspended or expelled. Students must be aware that sexualized behaviour towards another member of the college community may be classified as a criminal act, especially where there is an age difference between the students. This also applies to communication using electronic media and social networking sites.
The whole College site is a mixed gender area, except in changing rooms and bathroom areas which are gender specific. These areas must be respected by students of the opposite sex. Any students found entering another area of the opposite gender’s house may be suspended from boarding.
Any couple who are behind a locked or blocked door are likely to be suspended. The same rules and guidelines apply on all College trips, both during term time and in the holidays. Staff in charge of such trips will always issue their own detailed guidelines on all aspects of that trip before it takes place.
All students are expected to attend all assemblies.
You are permitted to request leave on weekends. Leave requests MUST be sent by Parents or Guardians by the preceding Wednesday (if not received by then, permission to leave may be denied).
Parents or Guardians will receive a travel request form which must be completed for the Boarding Team to approve your leave request. Parents and guardians can request a new link to the form by emailing boarding@padworth.com
Leave request MUST be sent by students by Wednesday before the weekend. Students must have parental permission to be granted unsupervised leave. (If it is not received by then you may not be permitted to leave).
Students must fill out the approval system on Teams.
Students up to 16 years can request leave to the local Shopping outlet in groups of 3.
Students 17 years and over can request leave to Basingstoke, Newbury and Reading in groups of 3.
Students can only request a leave if; their room is neat and tidy, they are on time for all registrations and the student doesn't not have any academic concerns from the Teaching staff.
Times of departure and return need to be agreed and stuck to (otherwise the privilege will be removed).
Take-away food may only be ordered by students on Saturday evenings at the discretion of the House Staff. Orders can only be placed after 7 pm, and food must arrive before 9.45pm.
This privilege may be revoked if students breach this rule. If food is ordered outside these times, House Staff will confiscate the purchased items.
Students may use Stables to socialise with each other. If students wish to leave the boarding house to take a walk around the campus or use the basketball courts, they must sign in and out of the boarding house using the Teams signin and sign-out chat.
It is our College policy to promote a safe and supportive environment for all students. Our pastoral care processes are carefully designed and reviewed regularly to provide support and care for all students. Support staff and selected academic staff have regular first-aid training.
Medical information on all students is required annually from parents/guardians to ensure the College can appropriately cater to students during normal College activities. Additional information will be requested for participation in excursions and trips. Any new health problems, changes in condition, medication, or special requirements must be promptly communicated to the College.
Boarding students who feel unwell in the morning must inform the staff member on duty. Students are still expected to go to breakfast, dressed and ready for the school day. After breakfast unwell students can report to stables office to be assessed by the boarding team, who will decide a course of action.
If students feel unwell during the day, their teacher must communicate with the house team before sending the unwell student to stables. Only the House staff can give permission on the grounds of health for absence from class and the House staff will notify teachers. Where necessary the boarding team will make doctor's appointments for unwell students.
If a student experiences a problem and feels it would be helpful to talk to an adult, there are several people at the College they can approach, such as House Staff, Teachers, Tutors, Assistant Principals, and members of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT).
Additionally, students have the option to seek help from the College’s Independent Person, who is available to take calls and meet with students who feel they have a problem. Information about the Independent Person can be found on notice boards around the College.
Students can also access TimetoTalk, a local counselling service in Newbury. The Boarding team can assist in arranging phone call appointments or organising transportation for face-to-face appointments.
On-site counsellors can be arranged if needed. Students wishing to make an appointment with an on-site counsellor may do so confidentially through the Boarding Team. This counselling service is strictly confidential between the counsellor and the student.
Valuable belongings should not be brought into college. If they are they should be marked with a UV pen or etching tool and properly insured. Items of value should not be left lying around. Lockable storage boxes are available in each room for valuable items.
Boarder’s passports must be handed to House staff for safe storage. These items will be signed in and out by both the student and house staff.
All belongings must be marked with a name to enable the owner to be identified if the item is misplaced. Books and equipment should not be left unattended at any time around the College site. Misplaced personal items should be handed in to a member of staff.
Students must conduct themselves quietly and sensibly as they move around the campus and when representing the College in any way off-campus. Students should be discreet with cash, mobile phones or other valuable items and should put them away immediately after use. Students must take care during the morning drop-off, when more cars are on campus.
Day students should only be on campus after 5.30pm if they have made prior arrangements with the Head of Boarding.
Students should be familiar with escape routes in case of a fire or emergency for all buildings. Doors should be closed so that strangers cannot wander into buildings. This also helps the heating system to work more efficiently. If doors are left ajar, students should close them whenever possible.
All callers or visitors should be wearing a visitor’s badge that is clearly visible.
All visitors should have received and read the Visitor’s Safeguarding pamphlet given at reception when they receive their badge.
All student leavers should not return to the College unless they have made prior arrangements with the Principal. If they are visiting, they are subject to the same visitor conditions as all other visitors. They should plan any visit for a time which will not disrupt the learning of current students.
Anyone acting suspiciously or who appears out of place should be reported immediately to a member of staff. Visitors should not be in the boarding house unless they have been permitted by the House Parent.
Students must behave courteously when moving around campus and should be aware of those with whom they share corridors and pavements, particularly staff and visitors.
Mobile devices are not to be used when moving around campus. Bicycles, skateboards or scooters should not be used at College.
On public transport, politeness, restraint and courtesy are at an absolute premium. College rules apply on all such journeys.
Many College trips involve travel on coaches provided by local companies. Sensible and quiet behaviour is expected, and it is the responsibility of individuals to remove their litter. Seat belts must always be worn.
Uphold the College character virtues (Kind, SelfDisciplined, Engaged, Team Player, Reflective).
Be polite, kind and caring to each other e.g. opening doors for students and staff and saying please and thank you.
Speak English as much as you can. Mobile phones and earphones are to be used when stationary and not when you are moving around the College or in the dining room e.g. sitting.
Before you post something on social media – stop and ask yourself whether you would say it to them in person.
Smoking, alcohol and drugs are not permitted at college and actively discouraged outside of college. No chewing gum is allowed in college. All food should be consumed in the dining room and boarding houses.
Ordering take-away meals is not permitted during the normal college day.
Do not walk around the college drinking – the floors become slippery when wet.
Close doors behind you when coming in and out of the building.
