Skiing in Europe Frosty air glistens in the sunlight, whilst the heady scent of pine entwines with the invigorating breeze. Glide down snow-covered mountains, with the brisk wind rushing past – skiing will re-energise and invigorate. Previously considered a costly venture, mountain resorts are becoming a winter wonderland for backpackers on a budget. Whilst there are some places to avoid with eye-widening prices, lesser-known destinations boast more rock-bottom price tags. Borovets, nestled in the Bulgarian mountains, is a budget gem showcasing slopes for both beginners and pros, and an efficient transport system. Get creative with where you stay: from Brasov in Romania to Bjelasnica in Bosnia. Czech Republic is another hidden treasure, with Krkonoše being the most popular option. Rural sites, such as Špindlerův Mlýn, host international competitions and serve up delicious Czech brewed 10
by Honor Tuttiett beer, costing a meagre 80p. Heartstoppingly picturesque, Zakopane – a quaint mountain town south of Krakow in Poland – has a backdrop of authentic wooden chalets encompassed by pine trees.
For a snow-filled experience on the UK’s white-washed soil, Scotland doesn’t disappoint. Cairngorm is home to slopes for skiers of all experience... A ‘cheap as chips’ option for budget backpackers seeking an action-packed daytime, and a fun-fuelled nightlife injected with a few tots of local whisky. More renowned hot-spots, such as Switzerland and Austria, can be inexpensive with early bird booking. Secure bargain deals by booking fast for Austria’s Snowbombing festival (6th-11th April 2015) – a hedonistic rave on top of the mountain. After a day on the peaks, huddle around an open fire whilst supping a hot toddy with newfound skiing buddies, and round off your alpine experience in true apres ski style.

London Top 5: qUIRKY THEATRES Finborough Theatre Sage-green archways lead to the award-winning Finborough Theatre in Earl’s Court, which churns out rediscovered works of the 19th century juxtaposed with new thought-provoking writing. Founded in 1980, this pocket-sized location draws giant-sized praise for its positive impact on London’s theatre scene. The Courtyard Plays, comedies and the like are on offer here for less than the price of a couple of beers. The Courtyard started its life in Covent Garden but due to a closure of the museum in which it was based, it was moved to Shoreditch in East London – a hipster home to the first public playhouses in Britain. South Bank’s Globe Theatre Today fans of ‘the Bard’ can get their Shakespeare fix at the South Bank’s Globe Theatre, transporting you back to the Elizabethan age. Founded by the pioneering American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, Shakespeare’s Globe is dedicated to celebrating the Bard’s spectacular works! Chinatown in Soho will give you a taste for Asian cuisine, as well as an intriguing insight into the oriental lifestyle. With numerous bars and restaurants to choose from, it’s not difficult to find a tasty snack to keep you a-float during your adventures. But just in case you need a helping hand, Kowloon Bakery should be just the meal ticket – that’s if you can get in of course! Often buzzing with custom, it is definitely worth the wait. Soho may be slap-bang in the middle of England’s
busy capital, but its worldwide influences will make sure that you need not go far to experience life in the Far East. Mosey on down for the Chinese New Year – 19th February, 2015 – and welcome in ‘Year of the Sheep’. Apparently Chinese couples are not keen to have a child during this year due to the negative qualities of the sheep such as being followers rather than leaders. Despite this, you can most certainly expect dragon dancing, firecrackers, bustling crowds and oodles of fun.

ixton Support Br by Honor Tuttiett Brixton has been noticeably showing the rumblings of gentrification for a while now. After decades of being a charmingly rough around the edges area, some of these changes aren’t being taken well. Once there were riots against racial discrimination but these days protests held seem to be against new eateries opening in what was Granville Arcade, now Brixton Village. Banners expressing their distaste had captions such as “Yuppies out, take your grilled salmon Panini’s and Camembert with you” and “Yuppies kill culture”. Local protestors are most angry about run down, empty spaces no longer inspiring passionate art or performance. Spaces are now profit focused which seems to have destroyed the naturally cool culture, driving away the people who injected passion and creativity into the community. An anti eviction protest was sparked in 2013, where a group of dedicated Brixtonites fought

authorities pricing the locals out. Hikes in rental prices have caused local businesses to abandon the area, with wealthy commercial chain stores moving in. This is not in-keeping with Brixton’s community ethos in any way. Brixton has always been changeable, with different immigrants taking up residence since the 19th century. However, soon enough, none of those familiar cultures will be able to afford the rent, and instead of sharing and making room like previous times, the colourful flavour which diversity creates will be lost. Of course there is a flip side to every story. New money spreads more jobs, more visitors and more wealth. And there is still plenty of character remaining: Brixton Market on Electric Avenue sells tasty Caribbean food, Brixton Academy packs out regularly due to the cool bands it hosts and the retro Ritzy Cinema built in 1911 cuts a cool picture in the heart of Brixton. So, support Brixton’s community by celebrating the area’s diversity, character and cultural edge!

Stroll through the medieval Westgate – the oldest surviving city gate in England – and tread the streets of an ancient Roman settlement. Wander past the High Street and discover quaint, timber framed, Huguenot houses perched over the peaceful banks of the river Stour. Famous for its Roman baths, and now its modern day Spa, Bath draws history enthusiasts, film-makers and multitudes of backpackers into its ancient cobbled streets. Stunning architecture, riverside walks and a certain ‘magical’ feel makes it one special travel destination.
S t. Christopher's Inns Our smashing Sarah jumped aboard the train to venture into the enchanting city of Bath for a fun night’s stay at St Christopher’s Inns.
Always enamoured with the prospect of a trip to historic Bath, I jumped at the chance to spend a night at the centrally located St Christopher’s Inn. Nestled cosily within the labyrinth of cobbled streets, the hostel was just a short meander from Bath Spa train station. Entering through Belushi’s – the restaurant and bar name synonymous with St Christopher’s – smiles of the friendly staff were there to greet us. We ascended the staircase to our private twin room where my travel companion, Amy, and I would be resting our heads. Complete with fresh linen, our double and single bunk bed combo appeared warm and inviting. Funky decor ensured we would be sleeping under the stars ... with a collage of Hollywood A-listers gazing down from the ceiling. Further inspection of St Christopher’s revealed that the same 26
clean, fresh and cosy feel of our room permeated the whole building. Behind bright yellow doors, dorms of varying sizes all boasted free WiFi and convenient bathroom facilities. For lone travellers, the attic chill out room was a perfect hangout for likeminded backpackers to congregate. Squishy sofas, bean bags, a book exchange and DVD rental suggested relaxing was the order of the day in this oasis. Welcome messages in various languages were doodled over one of the walls, revealing St Christopher’s to be a hot-bed for backpackers, from both near and far. Bath’s streets offer an enchanting array of boutique shops, cafes and restaurants – all set against a backdrop of gently imposing Georgian architecture. Many a Jane Austen drama has been filmed in the city: the famous Royal Crescent – where many scenes were shot in

a TV edition of Austen’s Persuasion – lies a stone’s throw from the hostel. A 15-minute stroll away, waters cascade spectacularly down the weir at Pulteney Bridge – one of only four bridges in the world to have shops span both sides. Also a Hollywood setting, the bridge was where Javert took his life in the recent film adaptation of Les Miserables. Meanwhile, the modern Thermae Bath Spa lies in wait for those who prefer to experience the lazy Roman lifestyle and bask in its healing waters.

Snoozing until the Sunday church bells tolled, we headed back downstairs to Belushi’s for a revitalising coffee and an impressive complimentary breakfast spread. Shortly before checking out, I caught site of a poster with the hostel motto: “party hard, sleep easy.” Our fun-filled stay in this well established Bath backpacker hostel echoed exactly that. Numb toes and icy cheeks accompany this seasonal stroll, whilst body weight is doubled by a multitude of layers warding off the bitter chill. Rustic, rugged, and steeped in history, smugglers used to claim this coastline as their own.
Now home to avid adventurers, the Devonshire coastline provides a great all-round wander, taking you from the picturesque village of Morthoe, through Woolacombe, and finishing at Baggy Point in Croyde. These towns are teeming in the summertime, and rightly so – they’re home to stunning beaches and a pumping nightlife! However, during the winter months they’re much more spacious, far less frantic, and equally as enjoyable.
Starting in Morthoe, venture onto one of the stunning beaches that fringe the coast. Golden sand stretches into the distance as the mist rises from the rough sea, dusting your face with refreshing salty goodness. Spot dedicated surfers
out in the ocean, with their buoyant heads bobbing up and down, waiting to catch a winter wave. No matter how cold you feel at this point in your journey, compare your un-submerged, dry body with theirs – you’re bound to feel a little warmer. Follow the frosty path through Woolacombe, gradually leading you away from the beach and rolling sand dunes, and into the more unruly terrain of Croyde’s Baggy Point. Rocky ground layers itself in a gentle but challenging incline – it’s not only amusing to clamber across, but gets the heart rate racing too. Up here, you’ll find yourself exposed to the weather front, as well as incredibly stunning views. Observe the dark ocean crash furiously into the rocks below, and compare it with the vast golden beach you just walked across. Once you’ve enjoyed the delights of the crisp Devonshire coastline, give your chilly tootsies a well-deserved respite from the shore, and saunter towards the local drinking taverns. An abundance of dainty west-country pubs await, offering a comforting setting to rest those weary feet. And after a wild, winter walk, nothing can taste better than a warming tipple.

t ities Cornwall 's Winter Fes byiv Rhiannon Thomas From cosy coastal Christmases to notorious New Year’s celebrations, the South West is front-runner when it comes to choosing a winter time destination. Crack open the eggnog and devour a classic Christmas dinner in front of a roaring fire at one of Cornwall’s idyllic country pubs. A best kept secret, the Miners Arms in Mithian, exudes an olde worlde charm with ghostly tales and stories of smugglers accompanying real ales and fresh Cornish produce. Three Miles south of Penzance sits the pretty fishing village of Mousehole. Each year, on 23rd December, the tiny village celebrates Tom Bawcock’s Eve – a legendary resident who went fishing in a severe storm, to relieve the village of famine – with stargazy pie served at The Ship Inn. The harbour and surrounding pubs and shops are illuminated by a spectacular display of twinkling lights – well worth a visit.
Once Christmas is over, fun-filled frolics are still to be had with New Year’s Eve celebrations around the corner. These are no ordinary celebrations. Looe – the usually quiet fishing town – is host to an influx of visitors, flocking to the streets, head-to-toe in fancy dress. Just like Looe, hundreds cascade to Newquay’s strip, clad in their best fancy dress, to embrace some of the South West’s best party venues. Clubs and bars provide the ultimate warm-up before revellers gather in the central square for the countdown to midnight. Blow away the cobwebs by taking a New Year’s Day dip in Newquay’s icy waters. Taking place at the harbour at noon, join the hardy daredevils as they plunge into the bitterly cold sea – it’s said to be the best hangover cure yet!

Spaceships Rentals Backpax’s Becky and her ‘plus one’ got behind the wheels of a Spaceships camper, and jetted off to Norfolk. They didn’t want their road trip to end...
The wide open road has always appealed to my adventurous nature and what cooler mode of transport than a campervan? I’d had my beady eye on Spaceships’ brand new VW Caddy ever since it launched as one of their camper rentals, at the beginning of 2014. Cool, cosy and compact, it’s like a tardis, housing a decent sized double bed as well as many handy facilities, and sneaky storage spaces. Rocking up at the depot, located just west of London, excitement kicked in for our little weekend jaunt. Before long Spaceships were handing over the keys to Nostromo - the cosmic name acquainted with our camper and we were off... hitting that wide open road in our sweet little ride! Escaping the Big Smoke I quickly got to grips with our funky, electric blue friend 32
- it was so effortless to drive, and quite nippy too with its 1.6L engine! Tunes were pumping through the impressive sound system, and the sun was shining. Extremely fuel efficient and economical, Nostromo can do up to 644 miles per tank – enough to drive all the way to Berlin! We pulled up at our campsite early evening - Whitlingham Broad - situated just on the Norfolk Broads’ outskirts. Eager to get the camper all set up for the weekend, we soon mastered the sideawning. The portable cooker was then fired up and we began mustering up our evening meal, while supping on cider. Cooking utensils were all provided, including a tin opener, spatula and tongs, as well as pots and pans, cutlery, plates, bowls and cups. There was even a washing up bowl, scrubber and tea towel to clear up afterwards - but don’t forget the washing-up liquid!

As darkness fell, we got the double-bed laid out. Consisting of two separate mattresses, they cover the entire back space of the van. It was surprisingly spacious, and could even fit my 6ft 4 boyfriend! The camper also comes with two pillows, a double duvet and bed linen. Thermo-insulated curtains can be suctioned onto each window, preventing the camper from being sweltering hot in the morning. After a surprisingly comfy night’s sleep, we folded back the mattress and set up the camper table inside for breakfast. Fully fuelled, we headed out to explore and stumbled across the Great Broad Lake, just a stone’s throw away. Against a backdrop of marshes abundant with wildlife and luscious green woodland, we spent an hour paddling blissfully in a hired two-person canoe amidst swans, ducks and Egyptian geese. Miraculously dry after our little paddle, we sauntered into the local village for a well-earned refreshing pint of pale ale. Once back at the campsite, we fully embraced
the camping spirit by hiring out a fire pit. Whilst the fire roared and the stars twinkled above, we got stuck into a game of cards (as well as a few cups of wine!). It was the perfect way to spend our final evening with Nostromo. The next day, we unenthusiastically packed up the camper, and made tracks – why do these adventures have to end? Skylining a row of handsome Georgian terraces, with postcard-worthy views, a four-storey townhouse is home to Carlisle’s first independent hostel. era North East Rivi by Toby Cryne Situated on the hilariously misleading North East Riviera, Newcastle is one of the endearing gems of the North. Landlocked in the nether region between Leeds and Glasgow, England’s “friendliest city” houses nuggets of Britishness, appreciated by any foreigner new to the land of ‘Geordies’. Newcastle’s famed iconography, such as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, Angel of the North, and the Baltic Flower Mill, are all reminiscent of an illustrious industrial past and a modernistic present. The city has of course become synonymous with football. The spirit of former manager Bobby Robson pulsates through the veins of every Magpie (a diehard Newcastle fan), whilst England footballer and Geordie hero Alan Shearer is referred to locally as ‘God’. Be prepared to be quizzed, debated and even judged solely on your choice of team, so bluff wisely friends. And then there is music... Newcastle stands proud of its brassy, outlandish reputation. Think of it like a condensed version of the Costa del Sol, only much colder. And that is why we Brits love it. Newcastle’s nightlife ebbs, flows and breathes, with city dwellers and weekend expats taking full advantage of its YOLO (you only live once) mentality. For the more civil minded, a number of pop-up festivals and events have also started fluttering across the banks of the Tyne in recent years. Events such as Hexham Vintage Fair kisses the North East with a sprinkle of Shoreditch, while food festivals provide all manner of cuisines. And if that wasn’t enough, Newcastle & Gateshead Winter Carnival offers a plethora of festive activities from the Enchanted Parks to festive themed events – even including a New Years’ Eve celebratory countdown. Those new to the shores of Blighty will no doubt be wondering, “why go to Newcastle in winter? It’ll be freezing!” Though your point is valid, just bring a couple of pairs of long johns, hell, bring your UGG boots and take the North West Riviera by the horns. Edinburgh is often considered as the Athens of the North and the city wears its nickname with pride. Wedged between lush rolling hills and the splendour of the North Sea, this city seems as if it’s been erected by giants and sprinkled with fairy dust, appearing out of a dream. Edinburgh captures magic as no other. It’s hardly a surprise that JK Rowling used the ancient Edinburgh castle and the city’s winding streets as a backdrop for the adventures of her illustrious bespectacled wizard.
The Royal Mile is probably the city’s biggest tourist draw card and most rightfully so. The Royal Mile is the name given to a succession of streets forming Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare. A stone’s throw from the far-famed measuring unit you can find the
Grassmarket, which used to be a traditional place for public executions. Nowadays the act of chopping off heads is rather ill-advised, although the effect of a pubcrawl around the area might have the same mind-numbing effect as the stroke of the guillotine. The Grassmarket shelters in the shadow of the imposing castle, a medieval stronghold that dominates the city’s skyline. Every year the castle plays host to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a celebration of music, dance and military pageantry. Often regarded as the most spectacular show in the world (eat your heart out, Glastonbury!) the Military Tattoo merges young and old, classic and modern into a whirling blend of creative energy. The amicable feud between Glasgow and Edinburgh will probably never get resolved, but it’s undisputed that Edinburgh is a marvel of a city – like a big village, bursting at its seams with dazzling energy. Be still and listen as you might just hear the bagpipes ringing out. Edinburgh’s lure never sounded so irresistible.

s by Lou Jones Scotland's Winter High Obsessed with finding the next adrenaline-fuelled challenge or just content to be amidst awe-inspiring surroundings? Scotland offers a plethora of activities; mountain ranges dominate vast swathes of the country, married by precarious ridges overlooking crater-like glens and eerily-still lochs. By winter, the sky-scraping plateauxs turn Arctic – the mountains transform into a mecca for snow sport fans, whilst providing a pristine backdrop for onlookers. Scotland boasts the UK’s highest pinnacles, with scores of ‘Munros’ majestically standing at over 3000ft (914m). Ben Nevis, the daddy of them all, draws the most attention. The Nevis Range in the West Highlands is a climbing heaven. Grab a pair of crampons and try your hand at ice climbing. Ben Nevis has a range of routes on the 300m high Carn Dearg
Buttress, while Glen Cloe valley puts scrambling and abseiling skills to the test. Sledging, snowshoeing and snow biking are also popular on the Nevis Range, which has one of the country’s five ski and snowboarding centres. A day pass, equipment hire and instructions cost just over £100. In the east, the Cairngorms’ ski centre has a funicular railway, so anyone not keen on James Bond-style daring deeds can enjoy the wonder of being up in the mountains while sipping a hot chocolate in Scotland’s highest restaurant. Hiking parts of Scotland’s great trails is an unbeatable way to experience some of the highlights, including a 550m zigzagging trail up the Devil’s Staircase – the West Highland Way’s highest point. When night falls, Highland dance to the rousing sound of bagpipes and fiddles whilst supping on the country’s favourite liquor, whisky – but, do go easy on the single malts or it could be double trouble!

ue Once upon a time in Prag by Lou Jones With the cold, dark months looming, step into the pages of a fairy-tale book featuring snow-dusted castles and towering Christmas trees freshly harvested from the mountains. Preserved within Czech Republic, the heart of Europe, Prague’s magic realm of medieval and baroque architecture is alight with festivities during winter. Old Town Square and Wenseslas Square host free Christmas markets from 29th November until 11th January. Wooden huts are crammed with charming handicrafts vying for attention, as well as
copious amounts of sugary pastries, spitroasted meats and warming drinks. The squares are a year-round bustling hub for tourists, teeming with bars and restaurants, but it’s worth stepping along the cobbled side-streets to discover cheaper alternatives. Nearby Ovocný trh’s rink offers free ice skating – overlooked by the regal pillars of the 18th century Estates Theatre. 48
Prague is surprisingly accessible, with free walking tours led twice a day from Old Town Square. Journey through the city’s history of fallen empires, communist struggles and Kafka origins, keeping your ears open for the sounds of the oldest clock in the world. Music is everywhere: treat yourself to an otherworldly performances inside the golden-topped National Theatre and the Prague State Opera. Temperatures can average around 2C (36F), bringing with it the possibility of snow – enchanting when it coats the turrets and gargoyles of Prague Castle. Vast and looming, this structure may look like it’s crash-landed from a Disney movie but the world’s oldest castle (c.870) houses many of the country’s government and cultural institutions. Hop on the funicular train that runs up Petrin Hill to the Observation Tower for sweeping views of your frozen kingdom. Bohemian Vršovice district has a plethora of hip hang-outs away from the mainstream crowds. And if you’re just after some romantic escapism then staying within the ‘Praha 1’ district will fulfil any winter-time fantasies.

Citystay touts itself as the “most centrally located hostel in Berlin” – and I’ve found that to be true. The hostel is walking distance from the main transport hubs such as the Alexanderplatz and the Hackescher Markt stations, must-see sights like the Fernsehnturm (TV tower), as well as shopping areas, cool bars, clubs, and restaurants. However, more than its prime location, the modern hostel delivers top-notch service and accommodation at an affordable price. Citystay understands the needs of budget travellers without skimping on quality. The rooms—whether single rooms or dorm rooms—are spacious, airy, and most importantly, clean and comfortable. The dorm room layout also gives travellers enough space to stretch out without having to worry about impinging on anyone’s personal 50
space. Plus, there are lockers in all the rooms—one for each backpacker—so you can sleep easy knowing that valuables are safe. Some rooms include a bathroom and shower area, which, unlike other hostels I’ve stayed in, are spacious as well as spick-andspan—meticulously cleaned by the hostel staff on a daily basis. The stately and historic brick building adds to the hostel’s ambience and atmosphere—you’ll immediately feel at ease and at home upon arrival. There’s a breezy outdoor lounge area where you can meet and exchange travel stories with your fellow wanderers. With its comfy seating, this area is also a great place to sip an ice cold authentic German brew during a hot summer afternoon, or to simply sit and fill out postcards (which are on sale in the hostel) for your loved ones

Innsbruck End your trip with a waltz back to Austria. Tucked away amidst the Inn Valley, Innsbruck bestows historical buildings, snow-capped mountains, and breath-taking views. The alpine destination also lays claim to hosting two Winter Olympics, making it an ideal check-point for snow sports. The funicular will zip you from the centre to the slopes in no time. The Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) museum and the Hofkirche are just a few of the city’s landmarks.
