Ambassador to the Arts
Though born and raised in Copenhagen, Los Angeles has called to me for decades. I’m now fortunate to call this splendid city home, and it’s my hope that, through the advent of the Los Angeles Ballet, it has received a gift in return. Who doesn’t secretly wish to live here? And once you do, experienced art patrons and novices alike want for nothing. From great dance, opera, theater, film, and music of all genres to some of the most esteemed museums and art galleries in the world (and growing), it’s a plethora of beauty, truth, provocation, and surprise—all wrapped in the exquisite package that is the architecture, weather, and general seduction of Los Angeles. Support your city’s artistic community with your attendance. Enrich yourself and the institutions and venues you visit with your presence. Raise your voice in appreciation, or otherwise. Comment, ask questions, explore, and ruminate. Most of all, have a great time.

Thirty-three days later, before he can set his liberal reforms into place, “the Smiling Pope” is found dead the very day after threatening to remove three prominent Cardinals from their posts. No investigation or autopsy is performed, and a Vatican press release about the cause of his death is later proven to be, in large part, false. The Last Confession, an unflinching and searing drama, recounts the mystery shrouding the events as told by their ultimate witness, Cardinal Benelli, who engineered John Paul’s ascent. Two imposing strangers arrive at an English seaside boarding house, disrupting the monotony and disturbing the puzzled Stanley—a former pianist who is out of a job and maybe out of his mind. In celebration of Stanley’s birthday, a party is planned, but menace arrives and mayhem ensues. Facts twist into half-truths, and the night unravels into a mix of the characters’ whimsical, eccentric, clownish, and ultimately darkest desires. ALbAnS: TReASuReS FRom THe CHuRCH And CLoiSTeR SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 – FEBRUARY 2, 2014 UNITING THE INTIMATE art of book illumination with monumental glass painting, this exhibition explores how specific texts, prayers, and environments shaped medieval viewers’ understanding of pictures in the era of artistic renewal following the Norman Conquest of England. Life-size paintings on glass depict the ancestors of Christ, and richly ornamented illuminations translate biblical texts into luminous pictures. The panels of glass have been temporarily de-installed and pages from the St. Albans Psalter unbound—allowing visitors to experience these works at a proximity enjoyed by few in their long and storied histories. The windows would have been visible to monks sitting in the communal space of the cathedral’s choir, and the psalter was meant to be held in one’s hands as an object of personal devotion. The early 12th-century manuscript’s graceful, powerfully drawn figures and saturated colors mark the arrival of the Romanesque style of painting in England. The windows from Canterbury, made toward the end of the century, represent this style at its apex and are the finest examples of English Romanesque glass that survive. in FoCuS: ARCHiTeCTuRe oCToBER 15, 2013 – MARCH 2, 2014 THE LONG, INTERDEPENDENT relationship between photography and architecture is the subject of this survey drawn from the Getty Museum’s collection. Seen together, the varied photographic representations of secular and sacred structures on display reveal how the medium has impacted our understanding and perception of architecture.

Damaged by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, this bronze statue of the Roman emperor Tiberius (ruled A.D. 14–37) was discovered in 1741, during the first years of excavation at Herculaneum. Standing over eight feet high, this monumental statue presents Tiberius with his head veiled, in his role as chief priest of ancient Rome. The exhibition also highlights information gleaned during the study and treatment of the statue, which has been returned to an upright position after many years off display.

Embracing cutting-edge technology including Polaroids, iPad and iPhone drawings, and most recently film, Hockney explores new ways to depict movement through multiple perspectives of a singular event. This exhibition introduces Seven Yorkshire Landscape Videos (2011), in which eighteen cameras, fixed to Hockney’s car, record drives through Yorkshire’s landscape. The film is displayed in a multi-screen grid that generates a larger, intensified image. As a scientific instrument, the camera operates as an infallible eye, augmenting physiological vision; as an artistic tool, it channels the imagination, recording creative vision. Much of photography’s authority and fascination resides in its interdisciplinary grounding. Whether we analyze it as a science or admire it as an art, photography’s power may never be fully explained, but it will always offer revelations about vision, perception, and cognition. Among the most important cinematographers of the so-called Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, Figueroa worked with leading directors from Mexico, the United States and Europe, traversing a wide range of genres while maintaining his distinctive and vivid visual style. In the 1930s, Figueroa was part of a vibrant community of artists in many media, including Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, Edward Weston, and Manuel Alvarez Bravo, who sought to convey the country’s transformation following the trauma of the Mexican Revolution. Later, he adapted his approach to the very different sensibilities of directors Luis Buñuel and John Huston, among others. Figueroa spoke of creating una imágen méxicana. The exhibition demonstrates Japan’s historical role in preserving a large part of China’s cultural and artistic heritage during three key phases in Japanese history: the Kamakura and Muromachi period (14th–16th centuries); the Edo period (17th–19th centuries); and the Meiji, Taishô, and early Shôwa periods (early 20th century). Miniature cars speed through the city at 240 scale miles per hour; every hour, the equivalent of approximately 100,000 cars circulate through the dense network of buildings. According to Burden, “The noise, the continuous flow of the trains, and the speeding toy cars produce in the viewer the stress of living in a dynamic, active and bustling 21st century city.” LeviTATed mASS oNGoING LEVITATED MASS by artist Michael Heizer is composed of a 456-foot-long slot constructed on LACMA’s campus, over which is placed a 340-ton granite megalith. The slot gradually descends to fifteen feet in depth, running underneath the boulder. As with other works by the artist, such as Double Negative (1969), the monumental negative form is key to the experience of the artwork.

Heizer conceived of the artwork in 1969; a drawing of the work is in the collection of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. The artist discovered an appropriate boulder only decades later in Riverside County, California. The boulder is one component of the artwork, as is the 456-foot-long slot beneath it and the surrounding environment. Taken as a whole, Levitated Mass speaks to the expanse of art history, from ancient traditions of creating artworks from megalithic stone, to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering. THe STudio GLASS movemenT, 1962–2012 oNGoING The year 2012 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the studio glass movement, and commemorations are taking place at museums throughout the country. The event that is considered to mark the founding of the movement is a 1962 series of workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art led by glass artist Harvey Littleton. Until that time, Harvey Littleton (United glass was primarily considered States, born 1922) Red/Blue a material for industrial uses, Combination Arc, 1984. Gift of Daniel Greenberg and Susan such as plate-glass windows, Steinhauser AC1997.249.12.1-.2 and for utilitarian drinking and serving vessels. Inspired by studio ceramists who had expanded the scope of their work to include sculpture as well as useful objects, glassmakers no longer felt bound by functional imperatives and embraced the potential of glass for artistic expression. Thus began a fertile period of experimentation that continues today, whereby glass artists have often worked on a massive scale and employed a variety of

techniques to highlight the brilliance, transparency, and visceral power of glass. The presentation at LACMA features work by Dale Chihuly, Stanislav Libensky and Jaroslava Brychtova, Harvey Littleton, Ivan Mares, Richard Marquis, Mary Ann “Toots” zynsky, and many more. bRuCe nAumAn: FoR beGinneRS oNGoING Early in his career, Bruce Nauman came to the conclusion that, “If I was an artist and I was in the studio, then whatever I was doing in the studio must be art. At this point art became more of an activity and less of a product.” For Beginners (all the combinations of the thumb and fingers) stacks two frames of video images of the artist’s hands with commentary on the different combinations he creates (like some sort of gestural painter, sans paint and canvas). His fingers shift as his voice delivers different commands. Like his 1968 work Walk with Contrapposto, For Beginners was created in the studio with a camera, the artist’s body, and little else. Suggestive of a struggle between words and actions, the physical and the mental, Nauman forces us to look again at the simplest of our own gestures. Mark Taper Forum
SinCe iT opened in 1967, the Mark Taper Forum Mark Taper Forum has been honored for its development of new plays and voices for the theatre, and for its continuing commitment to serve the broadest possible audience. It has received virtually every theatrical award including the 1977 special Tony Award for theatrical excellence. With Michael Ritchie as its Artistic Director and Gordon Davidson its Founding Artistic Director, the 739-seat Mark Taper Forum is one of the top resident theatres in the country. The theatre has guided and developed an impressive number of Tony Award-winning and Pulitzer Prizewinning plays, including Children of a Lesser God, The Shadow Box, The Kentucky Cycle, and Angels in America. story is made unforgettable by an extraordinary performance from one of our greatest living actors. Two-time Tony Award winner Brian Dennehy (Death of a Salesman, Long Day’s Journey Into Night) renders a hauntingly tender portrayal of a loving father and devoted soldier at the end of his life—raging with delusions of grandeur one moment, humbled and begging for comfort in the next. The Steward of Christendom illuminates with remarkable grace and compassion an important character in Ireland’s past left out of the history books: a devout and principled man and his spiritual quest for consolation and redemption when everything he loves is taken away. JANUARY 29 – MARCH 9, 2014 vAnyA And SoniA And mASHA And SpiKe Written by CHRiSTopHeR duRAnG Directed by niCHoLAS mARTin REGRET AND SIBLING rivalry fan the flames of laughter in this wickedly wonderful Chekhovian mash-up that equally tickles both the theatre neophyte and the ardent student of the Russian classics. Melancholy turns into mayhem when Vanya and his stepsister Sonia—along with their clairvoyant housekeeper Cassandra—are paid a surprise visit by Hollywood star sibling Masha and her twenty-something boy toy Spike. Will Vanya and Sonia ever find happiness? Will Masha sell the Bucks County farmhouse out from under them? And will Spike ever put his pants on? Master absurdist Christopher Durang (Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You) turns farce into high art when the original Broadway director returns to the Taper for this smash comedy. not only Robeson but also dozens of international personalities who crossed Robeson’s path, Beaty fills the theatre with the dreams, words, and songs (American classics like Ol’ Man River) of a man who sacrificed everything in the name of liberty. We marvel at Robeson’s triumphs—All-American linebacker and valedictorian while at Rutgers, NFL linebacker while in Columbia Law School, and eventually international star of stage and screen (Showboat; the longest running Othello in Broadway history)—and we gasp at the indignities he suffered as a civil rights and labor rights activist during the McCarthy era. This remarkable play, with music provided by a live combo on stage, is a powerful, unflinching account of a minister’s son who became the voice of the everyman around the world, daring to speak up and sing out for what was right. JULY 9 – AUGUST 17, 2014 buyeR & CeLLAR Written by JonATHAn ToLinS Directed by STepHen bRACKeTT IF YOU’VE EVER wondered what goes on in the basement shopping mall beneath a certain prominent Malibu residence, you’re not alone. Playwright Jonathan Tolins (Twilight of the Golds) and actor Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) team up for a fabulously fictitious imagining of what might transpire when an underemployed Hollywood actor finds the ultimate retail gig: sole sales clerk (and eventual confidant) to a mega-star in her subterranean sanctum sanctorum teeming with treasured mementos, career collectibles, and a frozen yogurt machine. The Funny Girl meets one funny boy when Urie animates the stage with a cast of characters above and below ground, taking us on the ultimate fan fantasy in an absurdly hilarious, yet surprisingly tender and affectionate, look at celebrity and its eccentricities. in the form of a computer-generated simulation that you had to “program” by sharing your memories of the person you lost? What would you say? What would you leave out? This profound new drama moves into uncharted theatrical territory when Marjorie is visited by her daughter, son-in-law, and the Prime. Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon (Clybourne Park, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf) directs, as momentum continues to build for award-winning playwright Jordan Harrison, making his CTG debut with this exquisitely crafted and compelling story of memory, loss, and love that transcends the passing of life. NoVEMBER 12 – DECEMBER 21, 2014 WHAT THe buTLeR SAW Written by Joe oRTon Directed by JoHn TiLLinGeR DON’T YOU LOVE farce? It’s your typical boy-meets-girl story, only the boy is a wily psychoanalyst married to a nymphomaniac. And the girl is his secretary…once she passes a not-so-routine physical. Mix in a little blackmail, a lot of sexual innuendo, a government inspector, a lusty bellboy, and voilà! This classic comic masterpiece has all the ingredients of a thoroughly enjoyable romp—manic action, twisting plotlines, mistaken identities, slamming doors, disappearing clothes, and, above all, Orton’s subversive wit, breakneck dialogue, and outrageous lack of appropriateness. Decried as scandalous in 1969 for its character’s raging libidos and rampant mockery of morality, What the Butler Saw is a timeless tale of sex and repression in a culture gone mad (it takes place in a mental hospital, after all), never slowing down long enough to let you catch your breath from laughter.
