Ahmanson Theatre to tell the story of Campbell, the heir apparent to the head cheerleader at Truman High School. Campbell is at the top of the cheerleader pyramid and she has it all—a strong squad, a doting boyfriend, and a straight path to the national championships. Her entire life has been dedicated to honing routines and staying within the strict rules and guidelines, but when a surprise letter arrives, Campbell’s world is thrown upside down. When the musical comedy premiered in its developmental production at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in January 2011, Wendell Brock of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution called Bring It On: The Musical “…one high-energy drink: fiercely funny writing, catchy hip-hop tunes, and an explosively original mix of singing, acting, dancing, and cheer.”

january 15–february 26, 2012

Say “hello gorgeous” to a new Funny Girl. From the streets of New York’s Lower East Side to the bright lights of Broadway, Funny Girl is the rags-to-riches, road-to-stardom story of legendary entertainer Fanny Brice. A love story packed with unforgettable songs (“Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” “I Am Woman, You Are Man,” and the international hit “People”), irresistible backstage drama, and a heartbreaking romance, this classic musical takes theatregoers back to the Golden Age of Ziegfeld and the height of burlesque. Part show-biz spectacular, part timeless love story, Funny Girl is pure Broadway legend.

Ahmanson Theatre American Idiot, called “thrillingly raucous” and “emotionally charged” by Charles Isherwood of The New York Times, features the music of Green Day and the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. American Idiot is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. Isherwood said American Idiot “…jolts you right back to the dizzying roller coaster of young adulthood, that turbulent time when ecstasy and misery seem interchangeable states, flip sides of the coin of exultation.” The musical features the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday,” and the blockbuster title track, “American Idiot” from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum album.

Fela!

book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. Jones music and lyrics by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti based on the life of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti directed and choreographed by Bill T. Jones presented by Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

april 25–june 3, 2012

“There should be dancing in the streets,” said Ben Brantley of The New York Times of the kinetic energy pulsing from the music and dancing of Fela! when it opened on Broadway in November 2009. Fela!, which is based on the life of the charismatic Kuti, is a triumphant tale of courage, passion, and love. It is the true story of Kuti, who created a new type of music, Afrobeat, and mixed these pounding eclectic rhythms (a blend of jazz, funk, and African rhythm and harmonies) with incendiary lyrics that openly attacked the corrupt and oppressive military dictatorships that rule Nigeria and much of Africa. His songs were an inspiration to millions. Fela! received a total of 11 Tony Award nominations in 2010.

june 13–july 22, 2012

Described as “…so exhilarating that it makes you rejoice to be alive; its sheer skill and invention are simply awe-inspiring” by The Times of London, War Horse is a powerful and imaginative drama set at the outbreak of World War I in the English countryside and also the fields of battle in France and Germany. War Horse tells the story of young Albert’s beloved horse, Joey, which has been sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. In a tale that the Sunday Express said is “…both epic and intimate,” and “absolutely guaranteed to move the heart,” Joey is caught in enemy crossfire and ends up serving both sides of the war before landing in no man’s land. Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home. What follows is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship. War Horse is filled with stirring music and songs, and at the heart of the show are life-sized puppets which bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on stage. “The puppetry is nothing short of miraculous,” according to The Times of London.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

After the Hunt

Since its inception in 1965, LACMA has Winslow Homer, 1892 been devoted to collecting works of art that span both history and geography—and represent Los Angeles’s uniquely diverse population. Today, the museum features particularly strong collections of Asian, Latin American, European, and American art, as well as a contemporary museum on its campus. With this expanded space for contemporary art, innovative collaborations with artists, and an ongoing Transformation project, LACMA is creating a truly modern lens through which to view its rich encyclopedic collection.

Asco: Elite of the Obscure, A Retrospective, 1972-1987 september 4–december 4, 2011

Asco: Elite of the Obscure will be the first retrospective to present the wide-ranging work of the Chicano performance and conceptual art group Asco. Asco (1971–1987) began as a tight-knit core group of artists from East Los Angeles composed of Harry Gamboa Jr., Gronk, Willie Herrón, and Patssi Valdez. Taking their name from the forceful word for disgust and nausea in Spanish, Asco set about through performance, public art, and multimedia to respond to turbulent socio-political periods in Los Angeles and within the larger international context. The art collective remained active until the mid-1980s, contracting

The exhibition responds to and renders thematic the aesthetic and critical tracts that Asco engaged throughout the course of their collaborative history. The exhibition seeks to trace the remarkable trajectory of the collective and showcase their intermedia art practices that rejected categories and distinctions, transgressed limitations, and shattered all sorts of preconceptions and stereotypes.

Contested Visions in the Spanish Colonial World november 6, 2011–january 29, 2012

Contested Visions offers a comparative view of the two principal viceroyalties of Spanish America: Mexico and Peru. Spanning the 15th to 18th centuries, the exhibition addresses two distinct, though deeply interrelated, subjects: (1) the continuation of pre-Conquest forms and styles in the colonial period; and (2) the multiple contexts in which indigenous peoples are represented in the colonial period—by colonial artists, European artists, and themselves. By bringing together an exceptional group of works in different media ranging from the 16th to 18th centuries, the exhibition will greatly enrich visitors’ understanding of the encounter of cultures, and how vision and power intersect in the colonial world.

California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way” october 1, 2011–march 25, 2012

This exhibition will be the first major study of California mid-century modern design. With more than 300 objects—furniture, ceramics, metalwork, fashion and textiles, and industrial and graphic design—the exhibition will examine the state’s role in shaping the material culture of the entire country. Organized into four thematic areas, the exhibition aims to elucidate the 1951 quote from émigré Greta Magnusson Grossman that is incorporated into the exhibition’s title: California design “is not a superimposed style, but an answer to present conditions. …It has developed out of our own preferences for living in a modern way.”

Los Angeles County Museum of Art Space is the Place: Revisiting Chicano Public Art of the 1970s: Sandra de la Loza fall, 2011

Sandra de la Loza is the founder of the Pocho Research Society of Erased and Invisible History and an artist whose work critically engages archival research. For this exhibition, she is developing a visual “mashup” of mural iconographies in a mixed media installation incorporating light boxes, video, and audio soundtrack. In effect, she is rewriting the history of muralism based on what was actually painted, as a set of predominant styles, during the 1970s. This includes psychedelic imagery, countercultural references, and landscape and animal imagery. Based on de la Loza’s painstaking research of over 500 murals, her project will separate the mural movement and its impact on urban space from realism. Working with musician and Ozomatli group member, Raul Pacheco, the installation will reintroduce the iconographic elements of this previously invisible work as a multimedia performative event. Space is the Place is part of the multi-part exhibition cycle Los Angeles: The Mexican Presence in Los Angeles, 1945–1980, which will present the artistic contributions of Mexican American and Chicano artists to American art and to Los Angeles’s artistic development. Along with primary research, the project will build on previous UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRS) archival research and oral histories

Los Angeles County Museum of Art In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States spring, 2012

In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States assumes a new perspective on surrealism, demonstrating the unique role geography and gender played in this international movement. North America represented a place free from European traditions for women surrealists— both native-born U.S. and Mexican citizens as well as émigrés fleeing war-torn Europe. Unlike their male counterparts who usually cast women as objects for their delectation and imagination, female surrealists delved into their own subconscious and dreams. For them this exploration was one of self-discovery as this new knowledge empowered and ultimately enabled them to create extraordinary visual images, both personal and universal. Arranged thematically, approximately 175 works in a variety of media date from 1931 (the year of Lee Miller’s first surreal photograph) to 1968 (the year that Yayoi Kusama, working in New York City, presented one of her landmark happenings, “Alice in Wonderland” in Central Park). A handful of slightly later examples will demonstrate surrealism’s historical overlap and influence on the feminist movement. This exhibition will be the first systematic investigation of the diversity of cultural and artistic traditions in Mesoamerica during the period referred to as Postclassic (AD 1000–1521) in the archaeological literature. Extending its reach into the present day, the exhibition’s innovative approach illuminates the social and cultural complexities of late pre-Columbian and early colonial eras as expressed in the art of the period and examines the enduring nature of these complexities in contemporary Mesoamerican societies. Children of the Plumed Serpent will provide the American public with a more sophisticated understanding of Mexican history and artistic production during a period of time

Geffen Playhouse

The Geffen Playhouse has been a hub of the Los Angeles theater scene since opening its doors in 1995. Noted for its intimacy and celebrated for its world-renowned mix of classic and contemporary plays, provocative new works and musicals, the Geffen Playhouse continues to present a body of work that has garnered national recognition. Named in honor of entertainment mogul and philanthropist David Geffen and proudly associated with UCLA, the Geffen Playhouse welcomes an audience of more than 130,000 each year, and maintains an extensive education and outreach program, designed to engage young people and the community at large in the arts.

Geffen Playhouse Kaller. Adam and Luke seem like a case of opposites attract— Adam is older, neurotic, and an atheist; Luke is impulsive, a struggling actor, and a devout Christian. After Luke is involved in a critical accident, family and friends descend upon the couple and these longtime differences collide, forcing opposing views on faith and family into a stand-off. As timely as it is touching, this must-see play exposes the fundamental truth that we love people both because of—and in spite of—who they are. Next Fall had its world premiere at Naked Angels Theater in New York in 2009 before transferring to the Helen Hayes Theater on Broadway in 2010. While there have been subsequent regional productions, this will be the second production for original director Sheryl Kaller and will give her the opportunity to explore the play with different artists.

Red Hot Patriot: The Kick Ass Wit of Molly Ivins (West Coast Premiere) Gil Cates Theater written by Allison Engel & Margaret Engel directed by David Esbjornson

run: january 3–february 12, 2012 opening night: january 11, 2012

Two-time Tony and Oscar nominee Kathleen Turner sizzles as Molly Ivins, the brassy Texan reporter whose liberal journalism skyrocketed her to the national stage. From writing Elvis Presley’s New York Times obituary to becoming the most widelyread self-proclaimed “pain in the ass to whatever powers come to be,” Ivins—often described as a modern-day Mark Twain—made rabid fans and enemies alike with her sharp-tongued humor and unabashed political criticism. This acclaimed one-woman show captures the red-headed reporter’s indomitable character by weaving personal anecdotes with her colorful take on national politics. Red Hot Patriot had its world premiere at Philadelphia Theatre Company directed by David Esbjornson and featuring Kathleen Turner; Esbjornson directed a subsequent production at ZACH Theatre in Austin (featuring Barbara Chisholm).

Geffen Playhouse Good People (West Coast Premiere) Gil Cates Theater written by David Lindsay-Abaire

run: april 3–may 13, 2012 opening night: april 11, 2012

Margaret Walsh can’t catch a break. Laid off from her job at the dollar store, South Boston is providing her the same level of opportunity it always has: none. Wry, rough around the edges, and ready to make a change, she goes to seek out the one who got away—both from “Southie” and from her. Instead, she finds herself in the burbs and out of her element, facing the question—is opportunity granted or earned? Nominated for a 2010 Tony Award for Best Play, Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire’s Good People takes an affectionate look at the “haves” and “have nots” through the eyes of characters who won’t be ignored. Good People was commissioned by Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) in New York where it had its world premiere in the spring of 2011.

The Exorcist (World Premiere)

Gil Cates Theater written by John Pielmeier directed by John Doyle adapted from the novel by William Peter Blatty

run: july 3–august 12, 2012 opening night: july 11, 2012

This world premiere adaptation of the famous 1971 novel documenting the terror and redemption of a ten-year-old girl remains as frightening and relevant as when we first experienced it. Under the direction of Tony Award winner John Doyle and adapted by acclaimed playwright John Pielmeier (Agnes of God), The Exorcist transforms the unsettling battles of good versus evil, faith versus fact, and ego versus ethos into a uniquely theatrical experience as sophisticated as it is suspenseful. The Geffen Playhouse production marks the world premiere.

Geffen Playhouse run: november 1–december 11, 2011 opening night: november 9, 2011

This world premiere play by acclaimed actor/writer Alan Alda delves into the life and romance of one of the most brilliant female scientists in history. Famous for her groundbreaking research in radioactivity, Curie was the only person ever to win two Nobel Prizes in multiple sciences, but not without a struggle. For all the answers that came to her in the lab, Curie’s life is peppered with questions of how to realize the passion she has for both knowledge and love. Celebrated but then rejected by the popular press as both a woman and scientist, Curie is left to define her place in society—and history—on her own terms. Helmed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan, the Geffen Playhouse production marks the world premiere.

The Jacksonian (World Premiere) Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater written by Beth Henley directed by Robert Falls

run: january 31–march 11, 2012 opening night: february 8, 2012

This eerie offering by Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley and directed by Tony Award winner Robert Falls transports us to a seedy motel in Jackson, Mississippi circa 1964. You go to The Jacksonian Cottages to bury your secrets, making the motel an unsettling world where subversive becomes commonplace and the passage of time becomes hauntingly unpredictable. Revolving around the night of a murder, The Jacksonian is a surreal trip that is rife with disturbingly dark humor. As this salacious tale’s mysterious events unfold, both characters and audience find themselves on a road that ultimately leads to a dead end. The Geffen Playhouse production marks the world premiere.

The Getty

The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to further knowledge of the visual arts and to nurture critical seeing by collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting works of art of the highest quality. To fulfill its mission, the Museum continues to develop its collection through purchase and gifts, complementing its impact through special exhibitions, publications, educational programs developed for a wide range of audiences, and a related performing arts program. With two locations, the Getty Villa in Malibu and the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum serves a wide variety of audiences through its expanded range of exhibitions and programming in the visual arts.

In Focus: The Sky july 26–december 4, 2011

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center Generations of artists have found inspiration in the sky, which became a rich subject for the medium of photography after it was introduced in 1839. Drawn from the J. Paul Getty Museum’s permanent collection, this exhibition explores the genre through the history of photography, including works by Gustave Le Gray, Alfred Stieglitz, André Kertész, and John Divola. Four sections— urban skies, clouds, dark skies, and skies in color—give an overview of the diverse and imaginative ways photographers have approached this theme. 30 guide for the arts 2011-2012

The Getty “In the Beginning Was the Word”: Medieval Gospel Books august 30–november 27, 2011

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center The four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, among the most well known texts in the Bible, offer a powerful account of the life of Christ and form the basis of the religion that his disciples founded. The Gospels were considered of paramount importance and thus richly decorated throughout the Middle Ages. Drawing primarily from the Getty Museum’s permanent collection, this exhibition includes examples of Armenian, Ethiopian, and Byzantine as well as Western European manuscript illumination. It examines the major forms of decoration associated with the Gospels, including portraits of the four Evangelists, and explores the varied approaches to illustrating the life of Christ.

A Nation Emerges: The Mexican Revolution Revealed september 1, 2011–march 1, 2012

Getty Research Institute, showing at the Richard J. Riordan Central Library The Mexican Revolution (1910–1920), which lasted a decade and transformed the nation, was extensively chronicled by Mexican, American, and European photographers and illustrators. Thousands of images captured a country at war. Never before, and possibly never since, has a country been the subject of such scrutiny or fascination. From postcards of the 1910 Fiesta del Centenario, to images of a war that was waged on several fronts by evershifting revolutionary factions, to photographs of the 1923 assassination of the retired Pancho Villa, A Nation Emerges: The Mexican Revolution Revealed chronicles this complex, multifaceted chapter in Mexico’s history.

The Getty columns. It was also one of his largest polyester pieces, measuring twelve feet high and eight feet wide, but has never been displayed in public. From Start to Finish tells the story of how this extraordinary piece was made. The exhibition features preparatory drawings and maquettes, videos documenting the fabrication process, interviews with the artist, and a discussion of the conservation of this sculpture. This Getty Center exhibition is part of the regionwide Pacific Standard Time initiative.

Pacific Standard Time: Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, 1950–1970 october 1, 2011–february 5, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center Pacific Standard Time: Crosscurrents in L.A. Painting and Sculpture, 1950–1970 charts the abundant artistic innovation in post World War II Los Angeles. During this period, Los Angeles artists looked for new approaches, subjects, and techniques for art making, including experimenting with the materials and processes of the pioneering industries in the region and the local surf and car cultures. The exhibition leads viewers on a dynamic tour from the emergence of an indigenous strain of modernism evident in the hard-edge paintings, assemblage sculpture, and large-scale ceramics of the 1950s, to the subsequent development of iconic Pop images of the city in the 1960s, and the conceptual and material contributions of Light and Space art and process painting that fostered the advanced art of the 1970s. This Getty Center exhibition is part of the region-wide Pacific Standard Time initiative.

Greetings from L.A.: Artists and Publics, 1945–1980 october 1, 2011–february 5, 2012

Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center Beginning in the 1950s, Southern California saw the emergence of newly diverse audiences for art. While gallerists cultivated collectors, Beat artists Wallace Berman and George Herms distributed handcrafted works among friends. Others, including Chris Burden, exploited the mass media to circulate their work. Art schools became innovative forums for artists such as Judy Chicago and John Baldessari. Social and political movements that championed peace and feminism mobilized artists to take their messages to the streets. Lyonel Feininger: Photographs, 1928–1939 october 25, 2011–march 11, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center A highly regarded painter, printmaker, and draftsman, Lyonel Feininger (American, 1871–1956) was the first master appointed to the newly established Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, in 1919. Like many other figures at the innovative art school, Feininger turned to photography as a tool for visual exploration. Beginning in 1928 and for the next decade, he used the camera to explore transparency, reflection, night imagery, and the effects of light and shadow. Organized by the Harvard Art Museum/Busch-Reisinger Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, this exhibition presents the first comprehensive overview of little-known photographs by one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The exhibition, tour, and catalogue were funded in part through the generosity of the Friends of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Dedalus Foundation, Inc. The presentation at the J. Paul Getty Museum is accompanied by a selection of Bauhaus photographs from the Museum’s permanent collection.

Narrative Interventions in Photography october 25, 2011–march 11, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center Featuring contemporary artists Eileen Cowin (American, born 1947), Carrie Mae Weems (American, born 1953), and Simryn Gill (Singaporean, born 1959), this exhibition explores the concept of storytelling through three distinct bodies of photographic works. Cowin’s images present a philosophical questioning of narrative and what is fact or fiction; Weems art attempts to rewrite a profound aspect of human history; while photographs by Gill reflect a more personal interaction with stories through deconstructed books. Although each artist has a different approach, all are concerned with photography and the notion of narrative: implied, real, or revised.

The Getty Modern Antiquity: Picasso, de Chirico, Léger, and Picabia in the Presence of the Antique november 2, 2011–january 16, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa An extraordinary episode in the history of European modernism is the alliance between the avant-garde and the antique. Juxtaposing 20th century works with ancient objects, this major international loan exhibition focuses on how four eminent artists reinvented and transformed antiquity between 1905 and 1935. Classicizing creations such as de Chirico’s enigmatic piazzas, Picasso’s postcubist women, Léger’s mechanized nudes, and Picabia’s “transparencies” made the arts of antiquity modern. The Getty Villa—a reconstruction of an ancient Roman house—and its antiquities collection provide a unique environment to experience modern art in relation to the classical past.

Images of the Artist november 15, 2011–february 12, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center Images of the Artist investigates some of the ways in which artists have represented themselves, their fellow artists, or their trade over the past five centuries. Raising compelling issues about identity and image-making, this rich theme is explored through a selection of about 45 objects—mostly drawings but also prints, photographs, paintings, and sculpture—from the permanent holdings of the J. Paul Getty Museum, complemented by loans from local collections. Works range from portraits and selfportraits to depictions of the artist’s life and space as well as allegorical images.

Gothic Grandeur: Manuscript Illumination 1200–1350 december 13, 2011–may 13, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center The word “Gothic” evokes visions of soaring spires, graceful flying buttresses, and sparkling stained glass. The term is also applied to the style of manuscript illumination that reigned in Europe from around 1200 to 1350. The Gothic illuminated manuscripts in this exhibition, drawn from the Getty Museum’s collections, are characterized by whimsical marginal decorations, vivid narratives, www.guideforthearts.com

In Focus: Los Angeles, 1945–1980 december 20, 2011–may 6, 2012

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center This exhibition presents 25 photographs from the Museum’s permanent collection made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1980. Both iconic and relatively unknown works are featured by artists whose careers are defined by their association with the city, who may have lived in Los Angeles for a few brief but influential years, or whose visit inspired them to create memorable images. Works by Robert Cumming, Joe Deal, Judy Fiskin, Anthony Friedkin, Robert Heinecken, Anthony Hernandez, Man Ray, Edmund Teske, William Wegman, Garry Winogrand, Max Yavno, and others are loosely grouped around the themes of experimentation, street photography, architectural depictions, and the film and entertainment industries.

La Roldana’s Saint Gines: The Making of a Polychrome Sculpture february 17, 2009–ongoing

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center Luisa Roldán (Spanish, 1650–1704), affectionately known as La Roldana, was one of the most celebrated and prolific sculptors of the Baroque period. This intimate exhibition introduces visitors to La Roldana, whose artistic superiority catapulted her to fame at the royal court in an otherwise male dominated profession. She ran a workshop, worked for the king, raised a family, and was a celebrity in her own day. With her polychrome sculpture of Saint Ginés de la Jara from the Getty Museum’s collection as a focal point, this exhibition explores the artist’s life, artistic achievement, and the multifaceted process used to create masterfully lifelike polychrome sculpture.

The Getty Roman Ephebe from Naples may 7, 2009–ongoing

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa Youth as a Lamp Bearer, a long-term loan from the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, is on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa. Created about 20–10 B.C., the Roman bronze figure of an ephebe, or youth, was excavated in 1925 in a well-appointed residence, now called the House of the Ephebe— named for this statue—off Pompeii’s Via dell’Abbondanza. Referred to as the Efebo Lampadoforo (Youth as a Lamp Bearer), the figure holds ornate tendrils that served as candelabrum branches.

Molten Color october 8, 2009–ongoing

J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa In 2003, the J. Paul Getty Museum acquired a collection of over 350 pieces of ancient glass, formerly owned by Erwin Oppenländer. The works on view in Molten Color are remarkable for their high quality, their chronological breadth, and the glassmaking techniques illustrated by their manufacture. The vessels are accompanied by text and videos illustrating ancient glassmaking techniques.

The Museum of Contemporary Art, LA tween 1974 and 1980, a unique period in American history when the political and social roles of artists, the authority of institutions, and the “objecthood” of art were all being questioned. The years bracketing the exhibition represent the ignominious departure and auspicious arrival of two presidential leaders from California: Richard Nixon (1974) and Ronald Reagan (1980), respectively. The exhibition will argue that the rise of pluralism was the result not only of the collapse of established canons but also the proliferation of new and divergent genres, mediums, and modes of production that reached their apex in the mid- to late-1970s in California, where, in comparison to the East Coast, artists were free to pursue catholic interests in the absence of the dominating forces of art institutions, commercial venues, and critical discourses.

Theaster Gates: An Epitaph For Civil Rights october 1, 2011–january 16, 2012 The first West Coast solo museum exhibition from Chicagobased artist and urban planner Theaster Gates, this presentation of mixed-media sculptures and installation works uses a Black non-aesthetic to explore urban blight and the potency of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s campaign in Birmingham, Alabama, in May 1963, when hundreds of demonstrators were violently hazed by the county’s police and fire departments.

Naked Hollywood: Weegee In Los Angeles november 13, 2011–february 27, 2012

In 1946, the tabloid photographer known as Weegee relocated from New York City to Los Angeles. In moving west, he abandoned the grisly crime scenes for which he was best known and trained his camera instead on Hollywood stars, strippers, costume shops, and naked mannequins, sometimes distorted through trick lenses and multiple exposures. Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles is the first museum exhibition devoted to the work Weegee produced in Southern California. In addition to roughly 200 photographs, many of which have never before been shown or reproduced, the exhibition encompasses Weegee’s related work as an author, filmmaker, photo-essayist, and genius self-promoter. Following the photographer’s lead, 46 guide for the arts 2011-2012

The Museum of Contemporary Art, LA the exhibition documents the lurid, irresistible undersides of stardom, fandom, commerce, and publicity in mid-century Los Angeles. Weegee’s 1953 photo-book Naked Hollywood provides the title and point of departure for the exhibition.

Ends Of The Earth: Art Of The Land To 1974 april 4–july 30, 2012 Ends of the Earth: Art of the Land to 1974 is the first large-scale, historical-thematic exhibition to deal broadly with Land Art, capturing the simultaneous impulse emergent in the 1960s to use the earth as an artistic medium and to locate works in remote sites far from familiar art contexts. The exhibition will highlight the early years of untested artistic experimentations and conclude in the mid-1970s before Land Art becomes a fully institutionalized category. Rather than romanticizing notions of “return to nature” or an “escape from culture,” the exhibition will provide a comprehensive overview to reveal the complexity of the movement’s social and political engagement with the historical conditions of its time. Ends of the Earth exposes land art as a media practice as much as a sculptural one, focusing on the extent to which language, photography, film, and television served as an integral and not a secondary or supplementary part of its formation.

Blues For An Alabama Sky by Pearl Cleage

november 1–27, 2011 Blues for an Alabama Sky unfolds in the summer of 1930 in Harlem, NY, just as the harsh realities of the Great Depression have devastated an ebullient decade of the Harlem renaissance. Disease and poverty have overshadowed the creative euphoria that permeated and fueled a surge of African-American artists, writers, and luminaries. It introduces a rich cast of characters, scrambling to survive and make some sense of their overlapping personalities, politics, and love lives: Angel is a struggling blues singer and nightclub performer who cannot find a job. Her friend Guy, a costume designer, is also out of work but dreams of being hired to design dresses for the famous African-American singer and dancer Josephine Baker. Their neighbor Delia, a social worker, is trying to organize a family planning clinic in Harlem. Their friend Sam, a doctor, works long hours delivering babies 52

Pasadena Symphony and POPS

The Ambassador Auditorium

The Pasadena Symphony Association was founded in 1928 by Conductor Reginald Bland. Originally named the Pasadena Civic Orchestra, its first members were mostly volunteer musicians, many of whom were students of Bland. Over the past 80 years, the Pasadena Symphony has artistically matured into one of the top performing symphonic ensembles in southern California, comprised of the most gifted and sought after musicians from the motion picture film industry. In the fall of 2007, the Pasadena Symphony incorporated the Pasadena POPS into its Association under the new name Pasadena Symphony and POPS. This merger created an expanded Classics and POPS series providing the community with a full spectrum of live symphonic concerts year-round at the historic Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena and at its new summer venue on the Lawn adjacent to the Rose Bowl. A hallmark of its robust education programs, the Pasadena Symphony Association has served the youth of the region since 1972 through the Pasadena Youth Symphony Orchestra comprised of gifted middle school students from all over the Southland.

Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum

Since it opened in 1967 the Mark Taper Forum has been honored for its development of new plays and voices for the theatre and for its continuing commitment to serve the broadest possible audience. It has received virtually every theatrical award including the 1977 special Tony Award for theatrical excellence. With Michael Ritchie as its Artistic Director and Gordon Davidson its Founding Artistic Director, the 739-seat Mark Taper Forum is one of the top resident theatres in the country. The theatre has guided and developed an impressive number of Tony Award-winning and Pulitzer Prize-winning plays, including Children of a Lesser God, The Shadow Box, The Kentucky Cycle, and Angels in America.

Clybourne Park

by Bruce Norris directed by Pam MacKinnon

january 11–february 26, 2012 opens january 25 The 2011 Pulitzer Prize and Olivier Award-winning Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris will open the Taper’s new season. In Clybourne Park, Norris imagines the history of one of the more important houses in literary history, both before and after it becomes a focal point in Lorraine Hansberry’s classic A Raisin in the Sun. In 1959, the house, which is located in a white neighbor84 guide for the arts 2011-2012

Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum hood at 406 Clybourne Street in Chicago, is sold to an AfricanAmerican family (the Younger family in Raisin in the Sun). Then in 2009 after the neighborhood changes into an African-American community, the house is sold to a white couple. It is through this prism of property ownership that Norris’ lacerating sense of humor dissects race relations and middle class hypocrisies in America. As Lahr notes, “Norris has a gift for social observation, historical analysis, and structure, but his greatest talent is his ability to capture in word and gesture what James Baldwin called ‘those stammering, terrified dialogues with the black man in America.’”

Waiting for Godot

by Samuel Beckett directed by Michael Arabian with Alan Mandell and Barry McGovern

march 14–april 22, 2012 opens march 21

One of the most significant plays of the 20th century, Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot will be the second production of the Taper’s 2012 season, and will feature two of the most prominent actors of Beckett in the world, Alan Mandell and Barry McGovern. Waiting for Godot follows two days in the lives of a pair of characters, Vladimir (played by McGovern) and Estragon (Mandell), whose apparent purpose in life is to wait by the side of the road for someone named Godot to arrive. This simple act, at once seemingly futile and hopeful, asks basic questions of human existence, why we are here and what is our ultimate destiny.

Center Theatre Group’s Mark Taper Forum Daniele, Los Otros, with its distinctly Californian stories that span several decades, was commissioned by Center Theatre Group. The first act depicts three defining moments in the life of a Southern California woman, all of them involving chance encounters with Mexican immigrants. The second act introduces us to a Mexican American man, first as a 12-year-old picking plums in a Central Valley orchard during WWII and finally as a 75-year-old whose mind is failing him. A final duet between the woman and man reveals their surprising connection and accents the myriad gifts and devotions that have shaped their lives, together and apart.

The Donmar Warehouse Production of “Red” by John Logan directed by Michael Grandage featuring Alfred Molina

august 1–september 9, 2012 opens august 12 Alfred Molina will portray one of the greatest artists of the 20th century in the Donmar Warehouse production of the 2010 Tony Award-winning Best Play Red by John Logan. Directed by Michael Grandage, Red is set in the New York studio of artist Mark Rothko, who is known for paintings that seem to pulsate with a life force of their own. It’s the 1950s and Rothko is working on a commissioned series of paintings for the new Four Seasons restaurant and his recently hired assistant is rapidly learning about the uncompromising aesthetic of his new boss. Though Rothko feels the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, he tells his assistant, “There is only one thing I fear in life, my friend … One day the black will swallow the red.”

November

september 26–november 4, 2012 opens october 7 Just in time for the 2012 election, David Mamet’s fiendishly funny comedy set in the Oval Office will be presented at the Mark Taper Forum. November takes place days before a major election and there are Thanksgiving turkeys that will more than likely have a better month than presidential incumbent Charles 86 guide for the arts 2011-2012

Though his staff has almost given up and his wife is planning for her post-White House life, Charles isn’t ready to throw in the towel quite yet. With Mamet’s characteristic no-holds-barred style, November is a scathingly hilarious take on the state of America today and the lengths to which people will go to win.

Other Desert Cities West Coast premiere by Jon Robin Baitz directed by Joe Mantello

november 20–december 30, 2012 opens december 2 A ripping family drama set in Palm Springs at Christmas, Jon Robin Baitz’s immensely entertaining Other Desert Cities will be presented in its West Coast premiere at the Taper. Directed by Tony Award-winning Joe Mantello, Other Desert Cities tells the story of a once promising novelist who returns home after a six year absence to spend the holidays with her parents, her brother, and her aunt. When she announces that she is about to publish a memoir focusing on an explosive chapter in the family’s history, the reunion is thrown into turmoil.
