Introduction Teacher Activity Packs (TAP) are used in conjunction with The Brandon Jones Series books to gauge student comprehension and to further enrichment and learning. Each TAP is designed to review learned objectives and correlates and adheres to state educational standards, as well as standards set forth by Common Core. TAPs from the Brandon Jones book series also ensure enrichment pages and activities incorporate higher-order thinking skills (based on the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy), and are easily adaptable for the differentiation needs of each learner. This TAP is divided into four main sections: Introduction, Comprehension, Enrichment, and Projects. Each section includes a guide to explain the contents and how they can be modified for your specific needs.

Identifying Consumers and Producers Directions: Read the short story below. Determine all of the consumers, producers, and products in the story. Identify them in the appropriate boxes below. The first one has been completed for you.
Every spring, Jackson and his family takes a walk around the neighborhood on Saturday mornings. The entire family orders pancake platters at The Breakfast Shack - Jackson and his siblings really enjoy the chocolate chip pancakes there! After breakfast, Mr. Fleming would buy a newspaper from Cousin’s Corner Store and sit on a bench in the park to read. Mrs. Fleming and Jackson’s sister Rita loved to stop in and talk to the ladies at the floral shop as they purchased a fresh bouquet of flowers. Once their parents and sister were busy, Jackson and his older brother Eric would race one another to their favorite shop, George’s Pies, to buy a small box of doughnuts. The owner and his wife usually gave Jackson and Eric a few doughnut holes to share, which always made Jackson smile. He looked forward to the weekend Fleming family walks each spring!

Project Based Learning Project Based Learning (PBL) is a method of teaching in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Using PBL in your classroom allows the learner to: investigate, make, and understand real-world connections to content create authentic works that deepen understanding demonstrate his/her understandings at multiple points in time PBL is well thought out and guided by inquiry. It requires a significant amount of pre-planning and focuses on the process and attributes of learning, rather than the end product.
Do not include scenarios or are based on events that have alredy been resolved Teacher work occurs primarily after project is complete
VS
Are often graded based on teacher perceptions All have the same (or highly similar) end results
Brandon Jones and the Great Business of Summer
Teacher work involves pre-planning and designing before project starts
Grading is based on clearly defined rubric made or modified specifically for the project being completed Results may differ among students and groups, based on student choice and applications
Do not resemble work done in the real world, and can not be used to solve problems
The Brandon Jones Series Teacher Activity Pack
Based on scenarios or background information that present a realistic problem or challenge
Generates possible solutions for real-world problems
74
Plan a PBL Experience Planning a PBL Experience takes a considerable amount of upfront effort. You may consider using this Planning Template as a starting point. The next two pages contain a blank Planning Template and Project Calendar for your use.
Define
PBL Lesson Planning Template In this area, you will want to specify your project idea, essential question (the main objective), content/skill standards that will be covered, and new vocabulary terms to be covered. Also be sure to identify the connection to real-world problems and possible solutions. Here you will need to plan for the following:
Design
Attention grabber - How will you open the project? Assessments - How will you gauge your learner’s content or skill mastery? Be sure to include a variety of opportunities! Resources Needed - What materials will your learners need to complete each assessment?
Presentation
Project Calendar
Debriefing - How will you pull the entire project together for the learner? How will you manage the project on a daily basis? Depending on the project, a good time estimate may include 2-4 weeks of pre-planned class time. Attach a calendar with the activities and assignments to be completed daily.
How will your learners present the final assessment? A true PBL project should be able to be shared among peers and others. Consider a digital portfolio, gradelevel presentations, or even perhaps planning a mini-conference with parents, school administrators, or community leaders in attendance.
