WELCOME TO THE 20TH ANNUAL MAINE FAMILY BUSINESS AWARDS! Tonight, we come together for the 20th time to honor a diverse group of companies, large and small, that represent all the best in family business throughout our state. This year we received 157 nominations, of which 32 were selected as semi-finalists and 25 as finalists. We are grateful to our wonderful judges who rose to the challenge of narrowing this impressive field to the seven winners we honor tonight. We are thrilled to present our first Lifetime Achievement Award to Maddy Corson in recognition of all she has done for family businesses, including her role as a founder of the Institute and the visionary behind the Maine Family Business Awards. Read more about Maddy on page 6 and join us in celebrating her many accomplishments as the leader of her family’s business and as a catalyst for good in the community. Our theme for 2019, “Operation Next Level,” is about more than just our robust educational programming—it’s our commitment to you in this, our 25th anniversary, that we will work harder than ever to be Maine’s comprehensive resource supporting, strengthening and empowering family-owned businesses statewide. We have made many enhancements to better serve our members, associate partners and sponsors, including unveiling our Award Force online platform to streamline the nominating and application process for these awards; adding a Director of Communications to our team and providing internships to four students over the past three years; and growing our Affinity Groups to include a Leaders in Transition group, a Women’s Leadership Forum, a Women in Family Business series with a Wine & Nine and Golf Scramble, and CEO Central groups. In the past year alone, more than 1,000 people have engaged with us through more than 50 programs. Membership in the Institute has more than doubled in the last five years, suggesting that—now more than ever—family business owners, executives and employees value the resources, education and networking opportunities we offer. As always, we are grateful to our founders who recognized the need for local resources to meet the unique challenges of family-owned businesses; to our generous Founding Sponsors, Elite Partners, Program, MFBA Award sponsors and members who make our work possible; and to you for joining us to celebrate the accomplishments of these outstanding companies. Thank you!

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD MADDY CORSON

I

n celebration of the 20th annual Maine Family Business Awards, the board of the Institute for Family-Owned Business is pleased to present its inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award. There was never a doubt that the first recipient would be Maddy Corson, without whom we would not be here tonight celebrating these outstanding family businesses. Maddy is a founder and steadfast champion of the Institute who supported the effort to become a nonprofit distinct and separate from USM. She also helped found the Institute’s Women in Family Business Affinity Group and was the driving force behind the Maine Family Business Awards two decades ago, which she envisioned, originally as the Gannett Family Business Awards. Maddy even commissioned an artist at the Maine College of Art to create the award itself, three concentric circles representing Family, Business and Community—the key dimensions of family business. A successful family business leader in her own right, Maddy was formerly chair of the board of Guy Gannett Communications and publisher of the company’s five newspapers including its flagship, Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram. Granddaughter of company founder Guy P. Gannett, Maddy represented the fourth and final generation of her family to head the Portland-based media company and led the successful transition of their family business to new ownership. Maddy has been recognized by countless civic and nonprofit organizations for her tireless energy, generosity and vision. She is widely regarded as a mentor, a philanthropist and a catalyst for positive change in our community. The Institute is proud to present the Small Business award each year named for Maddy Corson, and we are honored to recognize her lifetime of contributions to the business community and especially to family-owned businesses.

32 SEMI-FINALISTS, 25 FINALISTS AND 7 AWARDS ALL PICKED BY A DISTINGUISHED PANEL OF JUDGES

Choosing winners is a tough yet gratifying job for those judging the Maine Family Business Awards. It’s truly a treasure hunt with judges sifting through submissions, searching for those special gems that help separate winners from the pack. This year we had 157 nominations and 32 semi-finalists! The judges had a challenging task to narrow the field down from 25 finalists to pick 7 winners. What a joy to learn about these fascinating families that are running these amazing companies. Everyone is a winner in our eyes!

Judges use many guideposts to evaluate submissions, including: mission statement, values and beliefs, operational summaries, innovation and impact, growth and stability, family involvement, control and ownership, atmosphere and culture, community, external resources, guidelines and rules, employee and customer communications, changes and culture. All this information comes from our nominees’ applications and their nomination. Winners are not revealed until the Awards Gala.

BO’ LAIT FARM–WASHINGTON

17

Bo’ Lait Farm

Conor and Alexis MacDonald have brought new life to a mid-coast Maine farm that had been out of operation for nearly 30 years. This husband and wife team, who started Bo’Lait Farm in 2015, have nearly tripled the number of milking cows in their herd and nearly doubled their daily milk production in that short time. Bo’Lait is part of the Organic Valley co-op, the nation’s largest family-owned organic cooperative. The MacDonalds are a team in every sense of the word. Alexis says, “We share the same values and ethics and will always go above and beyond to provide the best care for our herd and land. This is not a 9-5 job, this is a lifestyle, and one that we hope our son, who is 15 months old, will love and inherit.” The MacDonalds’ commitment to sustaining success is evident in the designation as a “Forever Farm,” protected by the Maine Farmland Trust. They practice regenerative agricultural practices, rotational grazing, and manage their herd according to organic standards. Their commitment to transparency, stewardship of the land and producing quality food has resulted in gold quality awards for their milk for the past three years. The MacDonalds participate in Open Farm Day, inviting the public in to tour the farm and learn more. In 2018, Bo’ Lait forged an innovative partnership with ScrapDogs Community Compost in Camden, and earned one of seven grants in Maine through the Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling and Organics Management Initiative. Together they are working to build and run a commercial composting facility on the farm that will produce nutrient-rich compost using manure from Bo’ Lait cattle and food scraps collected by ScrapDogs. The compost will be returned to ScrapDogs customers and also sold to gardeners and landscapers in the region.

BOUCHARD CLEANING & RESTORATION DKI—BANGOR Norman Bouchard’s path as an entrepreneur began as the local waste management company collecting trash. He joined a carpet cleaning franchise, but quickly learned that he wanted more say in how to run his business in order to meet the unique needs of Maine customers—so he started his own company, Bouchard Cleaning & Restoration DKI, in 1987.

Norman Bouchard, Owner

Today, Bouchard employees travel the entire state, sometimes taking ferries to islands off the coast of Maine or transporting equipment by sled to assist in recovering from devastating events. As Lara Clark, marketing and sales director and Norman’s daughter, says, “We are a big family helping families of Maine recover after fire, water and mold in even the toughest of conditions.” Other family involved in the business include Norman’s daughter and office manager, Lisa Beck and Norman’s wife, Diann. The company takes the time to walk clients through every step of a restoration, providing peace of mind in an otherwise devastating situation. They also educate business owners on having plans in place BEFORE a disaster strikes, helping the community remain strong and businesses stay afloat. Bouchard’s commitment to using all green products help keep their communities healthy.

Bouchard Cleaning & Restoration DKI serves the entire state of Maine from offices in Bangor, Waterville, Augusta, Lewiston and Portland. The company’s membership in Disaster Kleen-up International (DKI)—the largest contracting network in North America—allows them to maintain the family business they have worked so hard to build, while having the resources of a broad network of restoration providers, as well as educational opportunities for their staff. In the past five years alone, the company has tripled its workforce and increased sales by $1 million. They have earned an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau and have been voted Bangor’s Best Cleaning & Restoration Company and Best Cleaning Company for the last four years. They support a number of nonprofits, including local fire departments, the American Red Cross and many others. Lara founded the Fire Forward program, which helps area families who have lost everything in a fire.

CONGDON’S—WELLS Congdon’s Doughnuts has been making doughnuts the old-fashioned way since Nana Condgon started the family business in Kennebunk in 1945. The store was moved to Wells in 1955, where it has remained a fixture on Route One for local doughnut lovers and visitors alike ever since. Current owners Gary and Diane Leech took over operations from Gary’s parents in the 1980s, with all seven of their children, along with other family members, having worked in the restaurant at one point in their lives, and some still serving in key roles. Gary and Diane have grown Congdon’s into a multimillion-dollar business with 160 year-round and seasonal employees since they bought the company from Gary’s parents in 1987. While the community would likely have been content as long as the Leech’s maintained business as usual—namely, keep turning out the delicious handmade doughnuts they love—Gary is always looking for innovative ways to grow the brand.

numerous fundraisers and causes throughout the year, including Camp Sunshine, Preble Street, United Way and the Town of Wells, among others. Gary sits on the board of the local animal shelter and teaches adaptive snowboarding and has served as president of the local chamber of commerce, historical society and as a corporator of a local bank. Jill and Adam, two of Gary and Diane’s children who are actively involved with the business, are also very engaged in their hometowns as well. It all adds up to a sweet recipe for success. Sales at the food truck park alone increased exponentially from year one to year two, with continued growth anticipated this season.

To that end, in 2017 he launched a new idea—Congdon’s After Dark. It’s a food truck park that opens a few hours after Congdon’s Doughnuts closes for the day and stays open late into the evening each night from May to September. The park is a first of its kind in New England, with a permit that allows for 10 trucks at a time. Congdon’s has 28 trucks in its rotation for this season. Menus and schedules are posted online. Congdon’s takes its role in the community seriously, supporting

DAY’S JEWELERS—WATERVILLE Over three decades, the Coreys opened a new Day’s store every three to four years, growing from a workforce of 10 employees in 1988 to over 125 currently and significantly increasing sales. Today, Day’s has six stores in Maine and two in New Hampshire. Their online store serves customers around the world. The family culture at Day’s maximizes the value of multiple talents and fosters continual improvement and pride. This environment of trust and transparency is reflected positively to customers who feel they are dealing with an owner regardless of who they are served by.

Day’s Jewelers Team Photo

Day’s Jewelers was founded by the Davidson brothers in 1914. Robert Corey got his start at Day’s in 1938 on Congress Street in Portland and worked there until 1955 when he and his wife, Enid, opened Robert’s Jewelry in Madawaska. The couple raised seven children, all of whom worked in the jewelry store. This provided invaluable learning opportunities for Jeff and Jim Corey who, along with Jeff’s wife, Kathy, purchased the last remaining Day’s store from the Davidsons in 1988.

FHC, INC.—BOWDOIN While the company has grown to a workforce of more than 100, the Haers’ vision of improving the human condition through medical device solutions for the neuroscience industry has not changed. Their products are used to conduct research and treat neurological disorders that impact millions of people worldwide, including Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. In 2012, the Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership awarded FHC the Maine Manufacturer of the Year Award for “creating a culture where innovation flourishes, leading to the design and manufacture of more than 7,000 unique metal microelectrodes and a broad range of state-of-the-art clinical and research instrumentation.” Today, Fred is CEO and Chairman of the Board, managing day to day operations. Son Andy is Director of Customer Collaboration and oversees all marketing and sales functions of the company. Jill is a major stockholder but is not involved in the day to day business. Kerri, Andy, Jill, Fred and Merlin Haer

Fred and Jill Haer started FHC 49 years ago in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They moved the company to Brunswick in 1977 and have been committed to keeping FHC a Maine-based company ever since. Now headquartered in Bowdoin, the company has additional locations in Pennsylvania, South America, and Romania.

In a recent article in the Times Record, Angela Twitchell, Executive Director of the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust, said, “Fred Haer is one of the most generous and humble people I have had the pleasure of getting to know through my work at the Land Trust. He and his wife, Jill, quietly do so much for so many in our community.” Twitchell noted that the Haers’ philanthropy has enabled the conservation of more than 1,000 acres, and the construction of public trails, along the Cathance River.

FONTAINE FAMILY-THE REAL ESTATE LEADER—AUBURN

Brenda Fontaine has been a fixture in the Maine real estate business for 35 years. Initially, her husband, Claude ran errands and provided support so Brenda could focus on growing sales. By the mid-1990s, daughters Melissa and Crystal had joined the company as buyer agents and business was booming. In subsequent years, son-in-law Bill, then daughter Angie and son-in-law Clay joined the team.

Fontaine Family is very involved in the community, supporting Make-AWish through their own Bid 4 Wishes fundraiser; Cans for a Cure; Safe Voices and many other local efforts.

Today, three generations are involved, with Brenda at the helm; Claude is now Chief Financial Officer. In 2009, they launched as “Fontaine Family—The Real Estate Leader” in Auburn, and in 2015 opened a second office in Scarborough, enabling them to serve clients in seven counties. The Fontaine Team is consistently named among America’s top 1000 professional real estate teams by Real Trends, and one of Maine’s top agencies. Working together as a family makes the business stronger, according to Brenda, because they share the same values. “It’s about doing the right thing for the right reasons; honesty builds trust and trust builds loyalty.” Brenda also notes that having the family name on the door “makes you want to do your very best work.” Fontaine Family’s success stems from their commitment to provide clients with world class service. In 2017, Geiger embarked on an ambitious overhaul of its Lewiston headquarters, which included a number of enhancements to improve the building’s impact on the environment. This included the installation of what is believed to be the state’s largest single business array of solar panels—696 in all---which generate 100% of the company’s yearly electricity usage and eliminate some 320,000 pounds of carbon emissions annually.

In 1878, brothers Jacob and Andrew Geiger took over their father’s printing business in Newark, NJ. Subsequent generations added to the product line, and eventually moved the company to Maine in 1955. Today, Gene Geiger has transitioned from CEO to Board Chair, while his co-owner brother, Peter, is EVP in charge of human

GENE’S ELECTRONICS—FORT KENT To say a lot has changed since Gene’s Electronics started repairing televisions, radios and CBs back in 1974 is an understatement. What hasn’t changed is the power of treating people like family, offering quality products at a good value, and standing behind your work.

5G, Smart Home and other innovations to come. More importantly, they’re a company that still knows their customers by name and has never lost sight of what is most important—honesty, integrity and reliability.

Gene’s Electronics was founded by Gene Berube, a TV repairman with a passion for growing technology. He eventually built and opened a repair store on his home property, hiring an employee to help him in the repair shop and eventually selling televisions. Over time, Gene became integral in building the satellite business in the State of Maine. The business continued to grow into a store in downtown Fort Kent from which Gene, wife, Diane and a few employees managed sales and installation of satellite systems. Today, Gene’s Electronics is a one-stop shop for TV, phone and internet customers across Maine and New Hampshire from locations in Fort Kent, Presque Isle, Houlton and Bangor. Gene and Diane’s daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Darnell Oliver, own the business and daughter, Connie Berry and her husband, Neil, joined the company to grow and manage business in the Bangor area. HARDWOOD PRODUCTS COMPANY, LP—GUILFORD Hardwood Products Company’s wood products are chosen for ice cream novelties, cuticle sticks and other applications that require finely controlled wood components. The company’s medical products are used by professionals in every field of medicine including veterinary, pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulation, rapid diagnostic tests, public health, forensics, DNA applications, food processing and safety, health and beauty, automotive and aerospace manufacture.

Hardwood Products Company is among Maine’s oldest and largest family-owned businesses, operated by the Cartwright and Templet families since 1919, when its only product was mint-flavored toothpicks. Today, the company operates two divisions—Hardwood Products Co. and Puritan Medical Products Co. All manufacturing is done in Guilford; the company takes pride in being one of the largest employers in the region, with more than 550 full-time workers who make and ship products worldwide.

The company takes pride in developing and fabricating its own production machinery, whether for the manufacture of an ice cream stick or a sophisticated medical device. A product design engineer uses 3D imaging and printing and other state-of-the art technologies to develop new products, a number of which have been patented by the company, with more designs in development. Today, the third and fourth generations are involved in leading the company either as trustees or managing production, operations, marketing and sales. Hardwood now makes more than 1,200 products with sales that have grown more than tenfold over the past 50 years. Virginia Templet, marketing manager, says, “Our family is committed to preserving our reputation of providing high quality products so our employees are assured of a workplace they can be proud of, and a job that provides both satisfaction and a good living.”

HIGHT FAMILY OF DEALERSHIPS—SKOWHEGAN The Hight Family of Dealerships is a fourth-generation family business that has been around for more than 100 years, dating back to 1911 when Walter Henry Hight, great grandfather of the current leadership, introduced the automobile to central Maine. Staying in the auto business that long is no small feat—in 2011, Hight became just the 38th dealership ever to receive a Century Award from the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA). To qualify, an auto dealer must have been in the retail transportation business for at least 100 continuous years under the same family. From its humble beginnings selling Model T Fords out of a livery stable, today Hight owns four auto dealerships, including its flagship in Skowhegan, as well as stores in Madison, and Farmington, all operated by Hight family members. Founder Walter’s son, S. Kirby Hight became involved after graduating from Bowdoin College in 1938 and was active in the business until his death in March 2018 at age 102. Kirby’s sons, Walter and Lou, joined the business in the 1970s and are still involved; Walter’s sons, Corey and Toby, and Lou’s son, Sam, are all active and on site daily at the four locations, which include Chevrolet and Ford dealerships in Skowhegan, a Chevrolet dealership in Farmington and a Chrysler dealership in Madison.

Left to right: S. Kirby Hight, Walter H. Hight, Founder and Son.

Founder Walter had a saying that may be decades old, but feels timeless to the customers who come back again and again to purchase vehicles from the Hights. “You put us first in sales and we put you first in service.” The Hights also put the community first, with family members actively engaged in leadership roles in a wide array of industry and civic groups, nonprofit boards and local businesses. The family has also donated to countless organizations over the years; in Skowhegan, the hospital birthing center is named for the Hights and a reading room at the town library was named in honor of S. Kirby and Grace Hight in May 2019.

We are honored to be recognized among the Maine Family Business Award finalists. These exceptional businesses, along with many other Maine family-owned businesses, help to shape our communities and to make Maine the special place that it is. We are proud to be included in such good company.

LAUZIER FINE HOME BUILDERS, LLC—EAST WATERBORO Roger Lauzier started RG Lauzier Contractor in 1977, adding “& Son” when son, Jake, was born in 1986 and dreaming of a multi-generation business. Today, that dream is going strong as Jake, owner since 2016, manages the day to day business.

Lauzier Fine Home Builders is truly a family business, led by Jake, with wife Kim managing administrative and financial matters. Roger still works in the field nearly every day, and serves as a sounding board for Jake.

While Jake updated the company brand, the family remains committed to outstanding quality and first-rate customer service. Over the years, they have expanded from residential construction and remodels to commercial buildings, large churches, multiple home subdivisions and complex office buildings.

The Lauziers love working as a family. Jake says, “Regardless of what has transpired during the day, you do not get to ‘leave’ your family at work. It forces you to build stronger relationships and work on better problem-solving skills, both on the job and at home.” Exceeding expectations, adhering to quality building practices and operating with honesty and transparency are cornerstones of the business. “Sometimes people just want an honest, friendly contractor they can trust and rely on,” says Jake. This may be as simple as calling a client to say they are running late, or answering calls and emails “after hours” because clients’ schedules don’t align with the typical work day. While Jake hopes the company will someday be a third-generation business, he says it is up to his son to decide, when he is old enough, if he loves the business as much as the first two generations do.

Maritime has a professional service team, 24-hour service and GPS systems in their vehicles to most efficiently route them to their customers. They stand behind their tagline, “We’re not comfortable until you are,” in all they do. Ware, father of chairman John Ware, founded Maritime Oil in 1939 in Rockland. John’s daughter, Susan, is also an owner and company president; her husband, Charlie, joined Maritime in 2011. Susan hopes their two sons will someday want to join the family business, too. Maritime’s community involvement is very deep. They have their own non-profit, Energy 4 Life, through which they raise money for the Maine Cancer Foundation to help local families dealing with cancer. Maritime Energy is running a campaign called Pennies for Life, in which 1 cent from every gallon of gasoline sold at their stores goes to support LifeFlight of Maine.

MICHAUD ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS—SCARBOROUGH Dean Michaud took a leap of faith in 2015, leaving his comfortable corporate position to start his own consulting business. His first client? The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, for whom he served as project manager to implement Sage Intacct, a “best in class” accounting software solution. Since then, Scarborough-based Michaud Accounting Solutions has grown into a full-fledged consulting firm specializing in business process improvement and accounting software upgrades. The company has established itself as the expert in implementing Sage Intacct for the Roman Catholic Diocese market, handling large scale Sage Intacct implementations for diocese from Maine to Texas. The company works nationally with a focus on the nonprofit marketplace, and locally in New England in all business sectors, most recently landing contracts with GWI, the Dempsey Center and Preble Street. Michaud Accounting Solutions is a reseller of Sage Intacct. Starting with just two employees—Dean and wife, Andrea—the company has grown to seven full-time staff and increased revenue by 65% in the last year, with a 200% increase anticipated for 2019. Dean’s son, Ethan, now works for the family business part-time, and last fall the company moved from a home office into office space in Scarborough to accommodate its continued growth.

Andrea says, “Being husband and wife we are each other’s biggest cheerleaders. We have complimentary skill sets, which truly helps the business grow successfully.” In 2019, the Michaud’s will launch MAS Integrated Solutions, LLC, a venture for which they received an MTI (Maine Technology Institute) grant. This cloud-based software product addresses a need for its Roman Catholic diocese clientele, solving a problem for this unique market.

THE MONTALVO CORPORATION—GORHAM Edwin Montalvo, Sr., with degrees in mechanical engineering and law, started his career as a manufacturer’s representative, but it was his move to manufacturing that revolutionized tension control. Building a prototype in his basement workshop in New Jersey, Edwin developed and patented the first-ever air Midge Denham and Edwin Montalvo, Owners cooled, multiple range, pneumatic tension brakes for converting applications. In 1976, Ed relocated to Portland and founded The Montalvo Corporation with a manufacturing site there. Today, the company is headquartered in Gorham, with sales offices in Germany, Denmark and China, and customers on six continents. Over its long history Montalvo has continued to provide new innovations leading to its latest system, which is designed for tension control of composites materi-

als, like carbon fiber. The National Science Foundation is funding development of this system. Ed Sr. was involved with the company until his death in 1985. His children, Midge Denham and Ed Montalvo, Jr., both serve as Directors of the company, with Midge engaged in human resources and financial operations and Ed Jr. in sales and marketing efforts. The family element of the business has been instrumental in many ways. One example is the creation of Montalvo’s BLUE Assurance program for customers, which is about responding to issues quickly without waiting for paperwork before they take action. As Ed says, “it’s just like with a family member, helping out first and then working out the details after.” The company has worked hard to establish, develop, nurture and facilitate a positive atmosphere where creativity and innovation thrive. Montalvo’s work environment is very open, with no one feeling they cannot approach anyone else in the company, whether peers, management, the CEO, or the owners. It is highly collaborative as different departments work to resolve multi-faceted customer needs, from sales to engineering to production. This approach has contributed to continued success; in 2018, sales grew by 14% over the prior year, and the company has consistently added new personnel each year.

THE NONANTUM RESORT—KENNEBUNKPORT The resort prides itself on its exceptional service to guests, diners and the many couples who hold their weddings at Nonantum each season. Recognizing that employee satisfaction leads to great service, Nonantum provides an unparalleled work experience, including the opportunity to attend community college for free during the off season—the resort even pays for textbooks.

Aerial View of The Nonantum Resort

Started 135 years ago as a boarding house, Kennebunkport’s Nonantum Resort has become one of Maine’s most cherished seaside resorts. The resort is owned and operated by three generations with Jean Ginn Marvin, daughter of founders Herbert and Adah Ginn, serving as Innkeeper. Colby Elizabeth Marvin serves in many roles, including human resources, payroll, manager on duty, and philanthropic director. Other family members, including Jean’s sons, Adam and Parker Marvin, have helped out in various capacities.

As Jean explains, “By embracing human emotion in our business approach, we are able to connect with employees and guests to provide them with experiences that are unique to their individual needs. This is what keeps our employees engaged and our guests coming back.” The resort recently implemented a “Self-Managed Paid Time Off” policy for year-round employees to allow them freedom to structure their work and home lives in the way that works best for them. Employees are encouraged to pursue advancement within the company and engage in professional development programs as well as social activities— which makes them feel like part of the family. Nonantum’s welcoming culture is evident in the numbers of employees and guests who return to the resort. “We have dozens of families who return to us annually because of the way they are treated by our staff,” says Jean proudly.

NORTHEAST CHARTER AND TOUR CO., INC.—LEWISTON Scott Riccio, founder, owner and president of Northeast Charter & Tour Company, started his business from his Auburn backyard in 1999 with two vehicles and a handful of drivers. Today, Scott and wife, Staci Riccio, operate one of the state’s largest transportation companies, with a fleet of 61 vehicles and nearly 100 full- and parttime employees. Son-in-law, Benjamin Piper, recently joined the company as assistant director of financial services.

The company is certified by the University of Vermont Certification for Sustainable Transportation program for its efforts to stay green. Northeast contracts with a member of UVM to teach their drivers and staff measures they can take to reduce fossil fuel dependence, and have implemented an incentive program to encourage their drivers to use best practices for fuel efficiency.

Northeast provides charter service, school bus service, shuttles, airport transportation, wedding and special occasion transportation, and more. In 2018 alone, they transported 175,000 passengers nearly one million miles. Northeast is an environmental leader, developing programs to reduce fossil fuel consumption and to reward employees for helping the company achieve its goals for staying green. In 2013, Northeast received the American Bus Association Green Spirit award and in 2014, the United Motorcoach Association Green Highway award. In addition to recycling in the garage and offices, they have converted all inside and outside lights at both locations to LED. Their garages are heated primarily with waste oil generated by their fleet as well as from other area garages that don’t have a way to dispose of their dirty oil. The company uses synthetic oil, transmission fluid and grease, and use energy efficient tires on all vehicles.

ROUSSEAU INSURANCE AGENCY—BIDDEFORD While the company has embraced technology and industry changes in order to better meet their customers’ needs, they have never lost sight of what truly matters—knowing each of their clients personally and treating them like family, friends and neighbors because that’s exactly who they are. Paul and Therese’s son, James Sr., is agency president and is actively involved in the day to day management of the business. He still communicates frequently with his clients to conduct policy reviews and assist with claims. The third generation is also heavily involved in the company today, including Matthew, James Jr. and Emily Rousseau.

Matt, Jim, James and Emily Rousseau, Owners and Agents

Rousseau Insurance Agency is a local and independent agent for auto, home, life and business insurance. Founded in 1959 and based in Biddeford, the company started with one sales agent, Paul Rousseau, and a bookkeeper—Paul’s wife, Therese—in their living room. Today, the company is expecting to grow by 8% and add to its staff of 13.

Careful succession planning and clear communication have been crucial to this family business’s continued success. When Matthew, James Jr., and Emily became partners with James Sr., they outlined a succession plan that will take the business through the next thirty years and hopefully into a fourth generation. The family agrees that having a clear understanding of the future helps everyone set their expectations and ensures success. The Rousseau family supports a number of organizations including many local youth organizations through school sports programs. They also support organizations such as the Saco VA Clinic, YMCA, Maine Cancer Foundation, local Rotary Clubs, and more.

SKORDO—BRUNSWICK in their own respective career fields first, they began SKORDO in November 2016. SKORDO launched online first, enabling them to perfect both products and operations. They believed, however, that physical locations would be vital, as many of their products need to be seen, tasted, and smelled. When the right retail spaces opened up in Portland and Freeport, they were able to jump on them with a plan and vision. As the company continues to grow—sales in 2018 were up 72% over 2017—they are looking to expand their retail presence further in New England. Erin Miller, John and Cari Karonis, and Anne Weiss, Co-Owners

SKORDO’s mission is to empower the home cook, from novice to foodie, to cook and enjoy good food with the ones they love. To the Karonis family, cooking and family are intertwined. Their love of cooking came from their family’s Greek heritage (skordo means garlic in Greek); their favorite memories of cooking always include family. Their company started as an idea in 2008, when husband and wife John and Cari Karonis were still retail consultants and John’s daughters, Erin and Anne, were still in college. They nurtured the idea over the years—and over many family meals—and once John and Cari retired and Anne and Erin had 4 and 5 years of experience

SKORDO’s spice blends and rubs are all created by the Karonis family, produced and packaged in-house with custom labeling, and distributed to online and in-store customers. They have also designed their own unique branding, including SKORDO Sets, Test Tube Racks, Recipe Cards, Labels, and more. SKORDO offers a unique instore experience with an interactive tester wall where customers can sample any ingredient they offer, while learning about the subtle difference between different spices and their uses. The family is enjoying this venture, and it shows. Anne says, “Many family recipes and taste testing dinners have occurred to perfect our product line. We’re truly having a blast together and customer feedback tells us that they feel that excitement and family focus when they walk into SKORDO. They’ve said it’s like walking into our family home!”

THE SUNRISE GUIDE—PORTLAND The Sunrise Guide started in 2006 with a singular mission: to inspire environmentally sustainable choices and share sustainability information and resources with the residents of Maine. Since then, the company has expanded from one publication to five— including two with a statewide audience—with a combined annual readership of over 100,000 and thousands of subscribers to its e-newsletter and branded Facebook pages. The company’s publications fill a niche not only locally but nationally, as evidenced by the growing number of subscriptions from people across the U.S. and the popularity of the tourism-focused Green & Healthy Maine Summer Guide. Owner/publisher Heather Chandler says, “We believe that business can be a force for positive change. To this end, we follow a triple bottom line approach that considers the impact of business decisions on people, profit and the planet.” For the past five years, the company car has been electric and the company has championed the use of electric vehicles. The business contributes tens of thousands of dollars in community support to local environmental organizations, including cash and in-kind product and promotional services. Annual revenues have increased 157% over the past ten years as the company has expanded its product line to multiple publications across print, mobile and digital formats.

Heather Chandler, President and Founder

Heather says, “Having the assistance of family members has helped our business fill in the gaps when the need is greater than current employees can cover. Beyond the day to day tasks, having a sounding board for managerial decisions has been invaluable.” In addition to Heather, family involvement includes her partner, Daniel, who helps with distribution. In the early days, Heather’s mother, Jayne, — now retired—served on the sales team.

TRIPLE MOUNTAIN, LLC—HIRAM Eleda and Roy Towle spent decades working in a large company before starting Triple Mountain, LLC in 2013. The lessons learned there are the standards around which the business, which sells collectible model horses and accessories, was built. “Although we’re selling horse-themed items, our business is really relationships,” says Eleda, the company’s Collector-in-Charge and only full-time employee. “We have the ability to change our operating procedures on a dime and we can take the time to get to know our customers on a level most businesses only dream of.” One example is the Hold Your Horses program, created to help a Canadian customer save on shipping as she added to her horse collection. Triple Mountain holds a customer’s individual purchases over a specified time period and ships all at once. The program has saved customers more than $8,000 in combined shipping fees since its inception. Triple Mountain has grown to one of the largest retailers in the market, with sales doubling each year from 2014-2017, through very personalized customer service that includes handwritten notes with each order. The company has an international customer base, including collectors in the Channel Islands, Germany, Russia, UK, Japan, Australia and Barbados, among others. The company is among the largest fundraisers for Harvest Hills Animal Shelter. Since 2016, proceeds from the sale of model horses donated specifically for Harvest Hills have grown from $200 to over $2,300 per year. Triple Mountain has also made generous donations to the Texas Equine Veterinary Association following the devastating floods caused by Hurricane Harvey, and supports Starting Point Services for victims of sexual abuse, based in Conway, New Hampshire.

WARREN’S OFFICE SUPPLIES—SANFORD While big box stores have squelched many small businesses, Warren’s has thrived by being nimble, responsive and adaptable. Customers, prospects and vendors know they can pick up the phone and speak to one of four family members who can instantly resolve a problem, respond to a question and provide solutions in a way no large retailer can match.

Melissa Bors, Warren Roberts, President and Founder, Sue Roberts and Jen Roberts

In 1981, Warren Roberts founded Warren’s Office Supplies with one employee who answered the phone, handled administrative duties and staffed a small retail operation while Warren managed outside sales. Today, the company has 15 full-time and two parttime workers with locations in Sanford and Skowhegan. They service businesses, local governments and schools from Bangor to Nashua.

Warren’s engages and entertains customers through its monthly e-newsletter featuring the company’s mascots, Pencil Man and Pencil Point. Content includes new products, coupons and offers, and family anecdotes to build a personal connection between customers and the family behind the company. Readership exceeds industry standards, and monthly trivia questions generate hundreds of responses. Four family members are currently involved in the business, with Warren as president. Daughter Melissa Bors manages day to day operations, customer service and bookkeeping. Daughter Jen Roberts is the creative influence in marketing and customer communications. Wife and mother, Susan Roberts, oversees HR and benefits administration. Warren’s shifted its focus from retail to business to business sales in 1996. As the sale of traditional office supplies and paper declines, they will continue to evolve their product offerings in response to clients’ needs.

WILBUR’S OF MAINE CHOCOLATE CONFECTIONS—FREEPORT Tom Wilbur and Catherine Carty-Wilbur have been delighting customers with their chocolate confections since 1983. Starting with one location, they now have three retail locations in Freeport and Brunswick, as well as a strong online presence. In 2016, they transitioned the business to son, Andy Wilbur, and Andy’s wife, Kristin Frazier, who have carried on family traditions of excellence while looking for new opportunities to grow and develop their products. Wilbur’s has grown from one employee to nearly four dozen, and has increased wholesale business, including clients Whole Foods and L.L.Bean, to 55% of total revenues, creating job stability and year-round employment.

ing holidays, as she loves seeing faithful longtime customers and introducing new customers to Wilbur’s. Andy and Kristin’s children, who have already expressed interest in running the business someday, are chief taste testers and tour guides.

Wilbur’s is the only chocolatier in Maine with a panning operation, used to create chocolate covered fruits, nuts and other centers. They are the first company in the U.S. to create flavored and colored panned goods. They have created high demand for their panned line using their high-quality chocolate—customers ask for Wilbur’s by name. As Kristin says, “When a specialty grocery store tried to swap out our products with a cheaper one, customers were not having it!” They have won Down East magazine’s Reader’s Choice Awards for Maine’s Best Chocolate and Candy Shop since 2010. Tom and Catherine continue to contribute to special projects and staff training when needed. Catherine works in the stores dur-

W.S. EMERSON COMPANY, INC.— BREWER W.S. Emerson Company has, over its nearly 100 years, transformed the garment decorating industry on the East Coast, pioneering decorating techniques not previously available in the market. W.S. Emerson operates one of New England’s largest garment decorating shops—an asset in a region that has lost countless manufacturing jobs. Their vast capabilities include screenprinting, full-color waterbased digital printing, embroidery and a state-ofthe-art bridge laser applique machine. The company has continued to innovate over the years. As clients requested more handsoff ordering, W.S. Emerson implemented online stores and streamlined employee uniform programs. Sales representatives work closely with clients to showcase their brand through a custom collection of branded apparel. Over the past year, W.S. Emerson has adopted Lean Manufacturing, which is benefiting both the company’s performance and its employees, improving morale and engagement in decision making. This ability to shift with the market and customer needs has led to growth in staff and sales. Last year, the leadership team grew by five members, and annual sales were up 12%, adding 600 new clients in 2018 alone.

Betsy Vickery, Vice President and John Vickery Jr., President

Two generations currently lead their family’s business. John Vickery, Sr. joined in 1966, leading the company through many changes and stages of growth. While retired, he is nonetheless known to offer his wisdom and guidance regularly. John Sr’s brother, Russ, is seen daily, offering his knowledge and support whenever asked. John Jr., the current President, has tremendous knowledge from growing up in this family business; his wife and Vice President, Betsy, has also grown up in this business. Together, John Jr., and Betsy have molded a talented leadership team that will help navigate the company well into the future.
