INSTITUTE of NOTRE DAME

IND has been at its original location on Aisquith Street for over 165 years.

Deep Roots

The Institute of Notre Dame (IND), rooted in the values of the Catholic faith and the educational vision of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, is a college preparatory school for young women. Located in the city of Baltimore, IND is a culturally diverse community, which educates its students to become women of discernment, active leaders, lifelong learners and responsible citizens of the world.

In 1847, IND’s foundress Blessed Mother Theresa of Jesus and four School Sisters of Notre Dame purchased 901 Aisquith Street to be their motherhouse. When two orphans arrived on their doorstep, the sisters responded by opening a school for girls. That was the first of many times IND was challenged and stood tall.

Who is an INDie Girl?

Our founder, Blessed Theresa, is the embodiment of an INDie Girl. She came to Baltimore from Germany in the mid-nineteenth century to educate and guide the daughters of German immigrants. Following in her footsteps, IND has forged a long and proud tradition of educating women who make a real difference in this world. Whether doctors, teachers, artists, philanthropists or executives, these are women who excel in their careers and in life. Everyday INDie Girls break down barriers and take on the glass ceiling. The INDie Girl has an unmistakable independent spirit. She’s resourceful and not afraid to roll up her sleeves. She dreams big, and understands that big dreams are only realized through dedication and hard work. She stands out in a crowd, usually because she’s leading it. She’s emotionally grounded, spiritually-minded and naturally inquisitive, respectful and responsible. The Institute of Notre Dame recognizes these qualities in the young women who pass through our historic doors, and nurtures them to ensure that every IND graduate is set up for success in anything she chooses to pursue in life.

project lead the way Think Big, Think Bold— Think Project Lead the Way

Did you know • STEM jobs—those in science, technology, engineering and math—are growing twice as fast as those in other fields? • By 2018, the U.S. will have more than 1.2 million unfilled STEM jobs because there will not be enough qualified workers to fill them? • Women with STEM jobs earned 33 percent more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs? These are just a few of the reasons why IND partnered with Project Lead the Way® (PLTW) to bring their world-class Biomedical Sciences and Pathway to Engineering programs to our students. PLTW is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative STEM programs for grades K-12. The program designers are teachers, administrators, professors, engineering and biomedical professionals who have proven expertise in their fields. And the program is certified, so you know IND’s program meets PLTW high standards.

6

IND introduced PLTW’s Biomedical Sciences Program in 2008 and its Pathway to Engineering Program in 2012. Enrollment in the two programs has steadily grown. Now one-third of IND students participate in the two PLTW programs. New for 2015—Computer Science!

Last December IND students joined the “Hour of Code,” a national campaign to have 10 million kids learn coding skills for one hour to promote computer science education. Talk about success! More than 15 million students wrote code within the first five days! The experience sparked IND to add the third PLTW program in 2015: Computer Science. The program teaches computational thinking, software engineering, professional programming language and platforms to develop apps, dynamic websites and graphical user interfaces. You can then choose to specialize in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and simulation and modeling courses. There’s great news for our students who graduate from this program: of the new job openings projected in 2018 for STEM fields, about half of these will be for computer specialists.

Project Lead the Way® Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical science combines science and human health-related topics. IND students role-play biomedical professionals, solving medical and health-care problems. Think genetics, microbiology and public health, to name just a few. Imagine diagnosing a little known disease. Consider how you would market a new medical product. Picture yourself doing laparoscopic surgery. You’ll think creatively, collaborate and explore careers in health care and medicine.

arts on aisquith Amping Up the Arts

Our foundress Mother Theresa believed the arts as essential as math, science and language. IND’s growing its Visual & Performing Arts Program to create the best program possible. We’ve added five new courses - Graphic Design, Introduction to Dance, Intermediate Dance, Introduction to Musical Theatre and Music Theory. We transformed our old gym into a dance studio, which features barres, mirrors and a beautiful wood floor. In future years, we will upgrade our historic Auditorium, adding air conditioning, new seating and state-of-the art sound and lighting systems—and continue to expand our arts curriculums. The 4th Floor of what was once the SSND’s Convent will become the Visual & Performing Arts Center at IND, a stellar spot where all of our arts offerings come together. The arts are so popular at IND that four of every five students are enrolled in arts classes!

8

Girls Ruled in “Les Miz!” IND puts on bodacious musicals and plays, such as the full-stage version of “Les Miserables.” At auditions, IND actresses were so talented they were cast in the four major male roles! Jean Valjean was expertly performed by Sydney Pope ’14. Sydney will grace the stage at Sarah Lawrence College having earned a sizable arts scholarship. Sydney is what IND calls a “four-year girl;” she appeared in every theatre production throughout her high school career.

spirituality Founders. Sponsors. Inspirations. Role Models.

The School Sisters of Notre Dame are that and so much more to IND. Our moral compass, they show us what is truly important and inspire us to follow their lead. As the first Catholic school founded by the SSNDs in the U.S., we share their message of hope, faith and education. We aspire to be as strong and loving as they are every day. All Faiths are Welcome

Although IND is Catholic, we welcome girls from all faiths. In fact, 30 percent of our students practice other religions. Their families choose IND because it is an excellent school that values and includes everyone.

10

Peer Ministry

You can serve others and strengthen your spirituality by joining IND’s Peer Ministry. You will have the opportunity to plan and create retreats, help other students as a peer minister or take part in IND’s services. Christian Service

IND’s Christian Service Program helps you serve your school, church and community. IND helps you select stretch projects and ones that match your interests. You need a minimum of 20 hours of service at the end of each academic year and a total of 80 hours for graduation.

IND’s inspired by the School Sisters of Notre Dame’s Directional Statement “Love Cannot Wait.” Embrace dialogue as a way of life that leads to new discoveries. Live more simply, responsibly and sustainably. Intensify our efforts to witness to unity in a divided world. Direct our resources toward education that transforms. Deepen the dimensions of our lives in the love of God.

Although there are many ways to serve at IND, the best known are ones we created here: Project K.IND and TamarIND. They’ve made such a difference in the lives of many girls, including the IND student volunteers.

real service Project K.IND: Baltimore’s Big Sisters Since 2001

You could be among the one-third of IND girls who volunteer each year as big sisters to younger girls through Project K.IND. Our student-led community program now works with five city schools: Archbishop Borders, Cardinal Shehan, St. Casimir and St. James and St. John, and one public school, Furley Elementary School. You will help girls in third through seventh grades with homework, as well as creating arts, crafts, drama and dance activities. IND girls also help build their little sisters’ self-esteem, speaking skills and understanding of issues like cyber-bullying. You’ll learn to lead as well. IND students manage all aspects of Project K.IND, from serving on the school boards, to writing grants to giving presentations. Biglittle sisters have been known to visit each other as they get ready for their proms, return from college or to just catch up on each others’ lives. TamarIND: Twenty and Counting

Each summer the giggles and singing of younger girls can be heard throughout IND as TamarIND takes over. TamarIND means“Take a Month Around IND,” although the program now lasts six weeks. It’s also a beautiful plant that grows in hot humid conditions, like Baltimore! As a volunteer counselor, you work with other IND students and graduates to help 40–50 girls enjoy dance, drama, arts, health, fitness and spiritual projects. TamarIND ends with a liturgical performance for family and friends in which the girls present and share their learning.

Every kind of girl plays. We make sure to balance competition with camaraderie, so sports are fun—as they’re supposed to be. And they’re good for both your body and soul. Sports build character, confidence and leadership. IND athletes must maintain their grades in and out of season to stay on the team. We belong to the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland, or IAAM. Girls from 31 private and parochial schools come together to compete on varsity and junior varsity teams.

prep for life Internationality

In high school, you learn on a couple of different levels. You learn the subjects you study, and you learn from the people you go to class with. IND includes girls of all colors, cultures and circumstances. That’s the way the real world is. Last year, our students spoke 20 plus different languages. Learning from people who are different will be the key to your success in the future. It’s called becoming “globally competent.” You can learn how to be comfortable with people who are not like you now, so that later you will be ready when the situation calls for someone who is informed, confident and flexible.

IND Prepares You to be Globally Competent3 Recognize Perspectives You recognize your own and others’ perspectives. Communicate Ideas You communicate your ideas effectively with diverse audiences. Take Action You translate your ideas into appropriate actions to improve conditions. Investigate the World You investigate the world beyond your environment.

To enhance your learning IND holds many events throughout the year to celebrate our students’ internationality such as ethnic food samplings, trips to local restaurants, speakers and forums.

You’re So Welcome Our warm community sets us apart. When surveyed, our girls said they felt welcomed when they walked through IND's front doors. That’s because we know the environment in which you learn is as important as what you learn. 3

real growth Grow Culturally Here and There

IND shares a cultural exchange program with its SSND-sister school, Schulzentrum Friesgasse in Vienna, Austria. Each year close to 20 Austrian students come to stay and attend classes with IND girls. Friesgasse students begin studying English in kindergarten, so their language skills are excellent. Spending 10 days with someone from 4,400 miles away is a real learning experience. IND students also visit their Austrian sisters each year. Past trips have included Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Germany. IND has also offered trips to Canada and France during the spring break and summer. This is one more way IND introduces you to different people, places and perspectives, enabling you to grow more globally competent.

Eleven IND students visited three European countries in 2013, part of IND’s cross-cultural exchange program.

Lessons in Leadership

Throughout the year IND will introduce you to women who are remarkable leaders. Many are IND graduates because we inspire great leaders. Each one’s path is different, and all have advice they’d like to share. Whether it is how to succeed in an all-male environment, the “unwritten” rules about making it in the workplace or a personal story of becoming an M.D., it’s good training for when you make your mark on the world. Marlette Sandoval ’16 meets Brigadier General Allyson R. Solomon ’79, as part of IND’s leadership series.

baltimore & beyond Experiential Learning

IND believes valuable learning takes place outside the classroom. We consider the city one big classroom—there to inspire, challenge and entertain our students. Because of our extensive partnerships, IND girls can be found learning, working, volunteering and enjoying themselves all over the city and elsewhere.
