WE ARE.
Every year since 1847, the Institute of Notre Dame has realized the inspired educational vision of its founding Mothers Theresa and Caroline. We remain a steadfast anchor in the lives of our students, our alumnae and our community.
We thank you for making it possible for us to carry forward the legacy that took root 167 years ago. While much has changed, a good deal has remained the same, such as our rigorous academics, focus on the individual learner and an inclusive environment. Sydney Tryon ’16 describes IND’s unique appeal. “I knew I was making the right choice when I shadowed and I felt the history—when I saw the beautiful slate stairs—which 165 years of alumnae had climbed. I felt the kindness and nurturing spirit as I walked through the halls.” For Sydney’s parents, Stuart and Stephanie, IND was the perfect choice. “We wanted our daughter to have the best high school experience possible. We prayed it would leave a lasting and positive impression of the world, yet not allow her to see the world through frosted glasses or create a false sense of reality, which would be shattered when she enters the ‘real world.’ IND has provided the experience we sought, for the woman we knew we were raising. We wish all girls could have an opportunity where they are welcomed, enriched and provided an environment to flourish, rise as a leader and a woman of the world.” Feedback like the Tryons’s, plus our graduates’ successes, confirm that IND excels in preparing strong, independent leaders for a diverse world. We thank each of you for making possible the mission we love with students for whom we care so deeply. Hail Notre Dame! Dr. Mary L. Funke, President Mrs. Kathleen Casey, Principal The Faculty & Staff Institute of Notre Dame

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY® COMPUTER SCIENCE COMING IN 2015
IND First in Maryland to Offer All PLTW Programs! Our science and technology programs are exceptionally strong and popular—40 percent of our students are enrolled in Project Lead the Way® (PLTW) Programs offered at IND. Designed by top-notch professionals and professors and nationally certified, PLTW programs develop problem-solving, collaboration and presentation skills, which improve students’ performance in college and beyond. Best of all, a high percentage of students enrolled in PLTW’s high school programs continue the subjects in college, leading to high paying, plentiful positions. IND began with the Biomedical Sciences Program in 2009, and then added Engineering in 2012. Because of you, PLTW Computer Science will be included in the curriculum for the 2015–2016 academic year. Research shows these programs to be the best in the nation. We are so proud to be the first school in Maryland to offer all three stellar programs. This exceptional combination allows IND to offer one of the strongest arts and sciences programs available.
THREE NEW FACULTY POSITIONS CREATED
Librarian, Dance and Graphic Design Teachers New for 2014–2015 One of the benefits of being a small school is that new positions—and the people who staff them—can have a big impact. Thanks to the imagination and warm ways of our new Librarian / Technology Teacher Ms. Janet Van Huizen, the Library is now one of IND’s most popular spots. Cozy couches and rugs make it an inviting space to curl up with a good book. Plus Mrs. Van Huizen creates library tie-ins for whatever is trending with students. One great example: students crafted Roaring ’20s style headpieces to complement the time period of the fall play, “Auntie Mame.” IND hired choreographer, director, dancer and teacher Ms. Lauren Carnesi to develop our dance program in the fall of 2014. Talk about an enthusiastic welcome— three classes, or nearly 20 percent, of students signed up! Further proof of how popular the arts are at IND. Another addition to IND’s expanding Visual & Performing Arts curriculum this year is Graphic Design, taught by newcomer Ms. Jamie Shinault, an awardwinning graphic designer. Ms. Shinault’s influence is evident in the creativity and professionalism shown in recent projects, such as the cover of the annual Christmas Program.

IND CREATES THE ARTS TALENT AWARDS
Three Four-Year Scholarships Recognize the Unique Contributions of the Arts In the summer of 2014, we announced three scholarships for students accepted to IND who plan to join our Visual & Performing Arts Program. The awards are named for women who achieved a special status in the arts as teachers or practitioners. The awards consist of $3,500 each year for four years: Sister Mary Sabina de Moll SSND Art Award – The magnificent paintings that grace the walls of IND’s Parlors are the work of Sister Mary Sabina de Moll and her students. For 59 years, Sister Sabina taught generations of IND students her signature classic painting techniques until her passing in 1961. IND’s yearbooks from these decades feature Sister Sabina surrounded by students and large canvases, painting portraits of angels, saints and the Blessed Mother, testimony to her tremendous faith and talent. Sister Caroleen Baummer SSND ’40 Music Award – A true IND legend, Sister Caroleen instilled in her students a love of all types of music by exposing them to opera at the Lyric, “Porgy and Bess” at the Morris Mechanic and “Babes in Toyland” at the Baltimore Actors Theatre. Her choirs were filled to capacity, numbering 40–50 students. Her musicals featured four- to six-part vocal harmony. Her emphasis was on discipline and diction—she is remembered as an impressive taskmaster. Sister Kathleen Marie Engers SSND ’43 Theatre Award – Sister Kathleen Marie Engers SSND ’43 brought together her love of theatre and children when she founded the Pumpkin Theatre in 1967. She conceived of the theatre after having staged several performances of children’s fairy tales at the now Notre Dame of Maryland University campus. Finding the seats too big for little ones, she created a child-sized theatre. Now in its 47th year, Sister Kathleen recently retired as its leader, but she continues to contribute by serving on its board.

THE GRAND DAME MAKES AN ENTRANCE
Lobby Facelift Recaptures School’s Original Elegance Students walking into the Lobby were surprised to see the magic of IND’s earlier era recaptured when they returned to school last fall. Over the summer, workers had scraped off outdated wallpaper, replaced worn out furniture, plastered and painted the historic walls and ceilings. The result: the warmth and glory of IND’s bygone age fully restored for this generation of young women to enjoy. It’s IND’s age and unique beauty that is what makes it so special. The SSNDs envisioned this as their first home in the New World, which is why so many of our students say they feel warm and welcomed as soon as they stepped through the front door. We have been using the same building our foundress built 167 years ago; the phrase “recycle, reuse, renew” could have originated here. We were green long before it was popular, using public resources rather than building our own. It is a strategy that has served the environment and IND well throughout our long history.
WE HAVE NEW NOOKS—AND A NEW LOOK
Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference in Comfort Level Wander down the first floor and you’ll be impressed. IND blue, a rich midnight shade, climbs halfway up the hallway walls. Benches with pillows replaced excess lockers, creating lively communal spaces for students to sit and read books, work on their computers or simply visit with friends. The favorite sit-spot lies at the entrance to the Blessed Mother’s Grotto. Chairs, tables, stools, counters and electric strips offer opportunities for chatting and charging. The spaces are often full and the atmosphere very relaxed. Along the walls on the First and Second Floors are framed photos featuring IND students acting in plays, volunteering on service trips and receiving awards. Girls hugging their dads at the Father-Daughter Dance, hamming it up during Spirit Week and hanging their plaid skirts on the stairs. Young women walking the aisle at graduation, squaring off during the Powder Puff game or singing their hearts out at the Ring Ceremony. Together they tell the story that is our girls’ four-year experience at IND.

THERESA HALL COMES ALIVE
IND’s New Dance Program is Warmly Embraced by Students Mother Theresa knew that while you must train girls in math, science and language, you must never overlook that which enriches their hearts and feelings. In 2014, we honored her by transforming IND’s former gym, known as Fathers Club Hall, into a dance studio and renaming it “Theresa Hall.” The renovation included HVAC upgrades, barres, mirrors and a refurbished wood floor. Only two sections of Dance were to be offered, but the classes were oversubscribed so a third was added—an early indication of the potential growth of the program.
AMPLIFYING THE ARTS WITH FIVE NEW COURSES
New Courses Keep Pace with Students’ Passion for Arts An amazing four out of five students enrolled in IND’s Visual & Performing Arts program in the 2013–2014 year! Others schools may have new, costly programs and venues, but they cannot match IND students’ passion. This year we enhanced our program by adding five new courses: Graphic Design, Introduction to Dance, Intermediate Dance, Introduction to Musical Theatre and Music Theory. Worthy of note: IND’s arts programs are academic courses of study, not extracurricular programs. Students take exams, attend professional art events and prepare for arts majors in college and for careers as practitioners and teachers.
NEW AP COURSES BENEFIT STUDENTS
Supports Our Vision to be “Renowned for its Academic Excellence” Next year we will strengthen our curriculum by adding new Advanced Placement (AP) courses: AP Physics and AP European History. Completing AP courses and exams can help families save on college by eliminating the need for introductory courses. Also students who complete the courses and exams with qualifying scores can earn college credit. One issue to clarify: AP courses are not only for students who always get top grades—they are for those who are academically prepared and motivated.
GIFTS TO MOTHER CAROLINE PROGRAM MORE THAN DOUBLED
Named for a Founding Sister, the Program Helps Those Who Need More Attention At the 15th Annual Dinner Auction, generous members of our community raised their paddles for IND’s Mother Caroline Fund, which helps students who need focused attention in certain subjects. In 2013, IND’s community donated $16,000 to program; in 2014, they went above and beyond, raising $42,000. IND sincerely appreciates their kindness. Their names can be found on Page 18.

THE CLASS OF 1962: ALWAYS TRUE The Class of 1962 arrived at adulthood during a special time. The first Catholic, John F. Kennedy, won the presidency. “Our classroom looked like a campaign headquarters!” recalled Ellen Stahl Karp. Pope Saint John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council. Dr. Martin Luther King was leading the civil rights movement. Although change and turmoil marked the time following their graduation, these women became steadfast IND supporters. In the past two years, the Class of ’62 has been tops in generosity—this year in Overall Giving, last year in Reunion Giving and second in Overall Giving. “It’s pretty simple,” explained Mary Pat Powers Nicholson, “I support IND because I received a great education, which has served me well, and because I sincerely appreciate the camaraderie and friendship of the women who shared those years with me. It’s my opportunity to pay it forward.” In the early ’60s, some students were “12-year-girls,” who attended from grades 1–12. “Twelve years of a great education, good friends and relationships that have lasted since 1951!” said Sharon Mann Imwold. “I’ve been Class Representative since 1977 and did all the reunions from 15th to 45th and loved every minute of it.” Then IND offered academic and commercial programs, as two of every five women went to college. Upon graduation, IND alumnae were in demand, recalled Sandy Barlag Stocksdale. “You learned values, discipline and you truly understood what your family sacrificed to send you to IND,” she remembered. “Baltimore businesses really wanted to hire us. IND students had a great reputation.” Their paths taken are diverse, but the ’62 alumnae share a common thread: being fully prepared because of their IND education. Sadly, one of their class’s most remarkable women died this year. Rita Sloan Berndt was an avid IND supporter. She and her husband Rick started endowments, served on the Board, gave directly and even made up the shortfall in students’ tuition payments. Rita’s classmates honored her with $5,000 in additional tribute gifts to IND’s Visual & Performing Arts Program, a testimony to the strength of their sisterhood and Rita’s love of IND. Please refer to Pages 11 & 18 for the names of these extraordinary women.

’62 Comes
SANDY BARLAG STOCKSDALE ’62 GIVES BACK Sandy Barlag Stocksdale ’62 credits her journey from poor city girl to stockbroker to her mother’s faith, a teacher’s intervention and hard work. Now Sandy and her husband Bill are giving back to IND, the place Sandy said helped make her success possible. The daughter of a single mother, Sandy grew up five blocks from IND on Biddle Street. “We were poor,” Sandy said. “My mother walked me to school and worked very hard to send me to IND. I worked as well, as IND allowed girls like me to clean classrooms to help pay for our tuition.” A “12-year-girl,” Sandy was certain college was beyond her reach financially. She decided to choose the commercial track, which prepared students for careers straight out of high school by teaching typing, stenography and administrative skills. “IND graduates were so well trained and dependable, they were in high demand,” she recalled. “When Sr. Marcelina learned about my plans to choose the commercial program, she asked to see my mother at school,” Sandy remembered. “Back then, when the sisters called your mother in, she came.” Sr. Mary Marcelina SSND taught religion and music. She convinced Sandy’s mom that Sandy should pursue the more rigorous academic course of study. “That’s exactly what I did,” said Sandy. Following graduation, Sandy was hired by Baltimore Federal Bank and attended college part time. Fortunately, her hard work paid off. “I kept receiving great promotions!” she exclaimed. Her college career ended as she moved onto better positions at different banks. “I became a licensed stockbroker, something I never thought I would do,” she said. Ultimately, she assumed leadership responsibility for setting up brokerage firms. When it came time for estate planning, Sandy’s husband suggested she create an endowed scholarship. “Bill said to me, ‘Since you’ve loved and supported your school all these years, why don’t you give back to IND?’” Sandy thought it a great idea, so they set up a $300,000 planned gift, which, once they have passed, would provide tuition assistance for future students. “My success would never have been possible without the education I received at IND,” said Sandy. “I sincerely hope others will do the same so that the school continues to benefit others.”

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Sr. Delia Dowling SSND Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends, As Chair of the Board of Directors during the past six years, I have had opportunities to speak with many of you, including alumnae from many decades, parents of several generations of students and long-time friends of IND. In a very short time, you share memories of your IND experiences with me. Then the conversation moves quickly to how important IND has been in shaping your lives. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank you for your inspiring commitment to our beloved school. In the 2013–2014 academic year, your generosity made it possible for IND to reach its vision of providing an excellent, challenging education in a caring environment. Contributions to the Annual Fund grew by eight percent, which enabled IND to add new courses and programs, enhance existing programs, and upgrade our historic building. Because of you, IND is in the forefront in providing young women with a rigorous liberal arts education with the very best in science, engineering and technology. As we move forward in 2015, our history inspires us, but your loyalty will sustain us. And our students continue to give us hope for the future as they grow into young women ready for college and for life.
With gratitude,
Sr. Delia Dowling SSND Chair Board of Directors

PROUD TO BE SSND: 2014–2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Provincial Council of the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) and a Board of Directors govern IND. The SSNDs are an order of Roman Catholic women religious who primarily focus on the education of women and girls. The sisters uphold their congregation’s founding vision that education has the “power to transform the world.” In 2013, about 3,000 SSNDs served in 34 countries. SSNDs govern our school, serve as teachers and staff members and guide us as SSND partners volunteering in our school. The SSND charism and vision guide all we do. Sponsors, inspirations and role models—the SSNDs joyfully spread the Gospel values of unity, love and inclusion in the name of Jesus by their actions as well as their words. For 167 years, IND has shared the SSND’s unique message of hope, faith and transformation through education. We aspire to be as giving as they are every day.

WE ARE SO GRATEFUL TO OUR CLASS AGENTS! Proud, Passionate and Personal—They Keep Us Connected! IND Class Agents are women who are proud of their years spent on Aisquith Street. They believe their IND education shaped the people they are today and want to ensure it is available to generations to come. They are true “connectors” who enjoy bringing their classmates together, keeping them up-to-date on each other and IND, as well as pitching in at IND. They are very busy people who support the causes they believe in. IND honors and thanks these wonderful women for all they did in 2013-2014 on their school sisters’ behalf. Class Agents tell us when one of you has done something great so we can highlight it in “The Onyx” or on social media. And they work with our Development Staff to arrange for reunions, clue you in on special events, needs and IND’s fundraising. Many manage Class Facebook pages as well. We cannot thank you enough! Is Your Class Not Listed? If yes, that means your class is missing a Class Agent! It doesn’t take a lot of time, just a willingness to get involved. Contact Kirby Gaddy, the Coordinator of Alumnae Relations, for more information at kgaddy@INDofMD.org.

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE BACKBONE OF IND Parents—present and past—alumnae, faculty, staff, SSNDs, friends and supporters— we could not do what we do without you. You share your expertise and lend helping hands in our classrooms. You organize, decorate, raise money and clean up at our events. You help our girls afford, attend and learn to manage our more than 60 clubs, sports and activities. You stand beside us in service to our community. You share your personal and professional experiences with our students, introducing them to the world of possibility before them. Because of you, dear volunteers, we are. We could not be more grateful for your generous commitment of your time and talents. STRONG TEACHERS & SUPERHEROES: OUR 2014–2015 FACULTY & STAFF Preparing young women for lives of significance takes a committed community of individuals, each knowing how his or her role contributes to the whole. IND’s faculty and staff are a close, tight knit family of people dedicated to ensuring the success of every student. It’s a certainty our students feel every day of their educational journey. Here are a few of our seniors describing the impact of teachers on their IND experience: “What makes IND really good? We have strong teachers and strong leaders! By senior year, we are truly prepared for college.” - Abigail Werner ’15 “Our faculty always have the students’ best interests at heart, and teach you so that you really understand the material. You never have to worry about not being able to get help—or get good grades—because the teachers are always happy to assist you.” - Mary Claire Price ’15 “At IND you have the opportunity to become who you want to be with teachers who truly care and are always there for you.” - Kiley Tempert ’15 That sense of caring extends to everyone at IND. A recent edition of “wINDows,” the school paper, featured our maintenance staff as superheroes! How impressive of our students to recognize the efforts of the people who keep the school warm, clean and running smoothly every day. A commitment to excellence extends to all who come to serve in our historic 167-year-old building. We are thankful to our faculty and staff for voting IND a “Baltimore Sun’s” Top 100 Workplace for 2014, which assesses organizational health and how employees consider their day-to-day jobs. This is the second time in three years IND earned this honor. Thank you to every IND employee for all you do. Because of you, we are. President’s Office President Mary L. Funke Ed.D.
