A sign of the times A vintage colorful graphic sign from a “mom and pop” grocery store is probably from the 1950’s or 1960’s. Signs like this make great decorative art for a one of a kind kitchen, family room, pool house or country cottage. There was a time when signage and billboards were painted by artists. Lettering for building identification was individually crafted by artisans who carved wooden letters. Signs on the glass doors of office buildings were hand painted and gold leafed. Lettering for neon sign letters were crafted in metal. Vintage signage and letters are actually commercial art. The art and craft of signage making has disappeared. What remains is an art that is now neglected but beautiful in its graphic simplicity, construction and color. Signs bring back memories of simpler times and are collected for their artistic, bold, graphic quality or aged appearance. We identify with the letters from signs that are our initials. Like fashion, art, and graphics, architecture and design signage and lettering has evolved with the times. A certain period can be recalled by the use of signs and letters in interior design. The design directors of INSTUDIO make bold graphic statements in rooms by including vintage signs and letters in place of art. Visit instudiosf.com for interior design direction.
