EDWARD BEALE & LAWRENCE QUIGLEY
Edward Beale and Lawrence Quigley are taking part in this joint exhibition at Whittington Fine Art for three weeks, from 22nd February 2015. The two artists have recently met for the first time since they studied together at the Royal Academy Schools. Lawrence Quigley’s atmospheric Thames paintings show bridges seen from other bridges and convey the immediacy and liveliness achieved by painting on the spot. He says: `I endeavour to capture the atmosphere or mood of place in a direct response to landscape or figurative subjects. They are nearly always painted in situation and are as much about painterly and abstract qualities as the expressive and spontaneous translation of perceptual experience. The process is itself part of the subject of the work.’ Edward Beale is also known for his Thames paintings but here we see how he approaches the most ordinary of subjects with verve and a robust use of paint. His oils of peonies and roses rub shoulders with an array of fruit and vegetables in a recipe of small studies: apples, mushrooms, turnips, groups of onions, swedes, cucumbers, and a single marrow. He says: `In these paintings I wanted to make concentrated studies of individual vegetables or fruits to show the extraordinary in the ordinary. Their textures, colours and peculiarity of their shapes are fascinating when looked at closely.’ Claire Edwards
