LANDSCAPE OF THE NEW BISPEBJERG AKUTHUS / Copenhagen , Denmark ‘UrbanLab Nordic’ Professional experience, ongoing from 2018 Copenhagen, Denmark

Urban Lab Nordic, as sub-consultants of Arup developed landscape architecture part of the tender project and the regulatory project + dispensations. Partners: KHR Architecture, Arup Ingeneering, Kunstner: Camilla Nørgaard + Jakob Bue, Via Trafik. Client: Region Hovedstaden/ Bispebjerg Hospital Urban Lab Nordic, the team: Anne Kathrine Aaris Edslev, Architect, Creative Director and Partner, Anne Schlosser Dehn, Urban Designer, Saray Ossorio Hernandez, Landscape Architect. Jens Klitgaard, BIM expert / Architect. Myself, Landscape Architect and Urban Designer. MY ROLE Primary project architect (Danish: projekteringsarkitek), partly manager (Danish: sagsansvarlig) I joined the project in May, 2018 and since September 2019 I have been involved in design tasks and project coordination between UrbanLab Nordic and other disciplines such as architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering and traffic planning. Together with UrbanLab Nordic team I have been involved in developing the hardscape and the softscape plan; in close collaboration with Anne Kathrine Aaris Edslev I have developed water management plan and principles, design solutions and technical drawings for green roofs and rooftop terrace, I have worked a lot with terrain and accessibility of whole site and moved the lake to a new location. In close collaboration with traffic engineers, I have taken part in designing solutions for roads around the Akuthus area and solutions for protection of the surrounding alley trees. 6

PLANTING STRATEGY The planting strategy has been created according to Master Plan for North Bispebjerg, Planting. It outlines the coherent landscaping project for the Accident and Emergency Hospital and the Psychiatric Clinic. The planned landscape around the hospital is inspired by English landscape gardens and from the existing landscape. The new landscape is formed of continuous open spaces, open and green park areas with grass and large solitary trees divided by a number of crossing landscape belts. Additionally, between the bedwings smaller pocket parks will be formed. These “fairy-tale pocket gardens” will be fully planted and rainwater beds will help to handle rainwater.

(diagrams made by co-worker, Urban Lab Nordic)

THE LAKE In the north-eastern part of the hospital area, there is a small lake. The lake covers approx. 680m2 and is protected. The present shape and location of the lake present a number of challenges in connection to the construction of the new hospital building. Therefore, the lake is slightly moved towards the northeast and reshaped to not encroach on the new hospital building. Around the new lake the terrain is altered in order to create a natural environment. The slope angle of 1:5 creates a sloping lake shore which creates a habitat for the lake’s animals and plants. In rainy seasons the lake may flow over its banks.

MAIN CHALLANGE - TERRAIN The main challenge of the project was to design the terrain around the building. The site of Aukuthus slopes down towards the south creating up to 2,5m height difference. Because of that, entrances of the building meet the terrain in different heights, for instance, +26.800 in the south and +22.000 in the north. Additionally, the terrain under preserved alley trees had to stay as it is and also the heights of the roads around the site. Despite all of these challenges, we have created an accessible environment all around the building and a water management plan for the entire site, including guiding principles for rainwater collection and temporary storing at the site.

The South Plateau is partly placed on top of the underground parking garage and serves as the main arrival area for pedestrians, bicyclists and cars. The main arrival for pedestrians is the landscape stairs that continues historical axis through the hospital area; alternatively, next to the stairs there is a handicap-friendly path with max 4,5% slope for accessibility. Both, stairs and the path lead to the main plaza and the main entrance. The South Plateau also serves as the main arrival for cars. A short-term parking is provided on the terrain giving the opportunity to wait for hospital transport, taxi or a private drive.

ØSTRE GASVÆRK youth housing and theatre rehearsal studio / Copenhagen , Denmark ‘UrbanLab Nordic’ Professional experience, ongoing from 2019 Copenhagen, Denmark

Østre Gasværk is a mixed-use 7 floor building with a youth housing, a car park and a rehearsal room for Østre Gasværk Teater in Østerbro. Urban Lab Nordic, and myself as part of the team, developed a landscape project with recreational facilities, a semi private yard, terraces, plantings, training and bicycle parkings, and activity path. Our team also takes part in the public road project. Partners: KHR Architecture, MOE Ingeniør. Client: Ap byggeri, KAB. Design and build contractor: NRE Urban Lab Nordic, the team: Anne Kathrine Aaris Edslev, Architect, Creative Director and Partner, Anne Schlosser Dehn, Urban Designer, Meritxell Arderiu Ruiz, Landscape Architect. Myself, Landscape Architect and Urban Designer. MY ROLE Project architect (Danish: projekteringsarkitek) and sketching architect (Danish: skitseringsarkitekt). I have been involved in the project from the very beginning. I developed design ideas in the sketching phase and was fully responsible to develop all the drawings including details for the main project (Danish: hovedprojekt) and bidding. The main challenges of the project have been related to plantings and materials in the courtyard on top of the car park and on the terraces. The courtyard design was developed with aim to have a green, functional and recreational space and also at the same time to fulfil the wish for 3 big trees (up to 10m)and requirements from the local plan for bike parkings. Another challenge has been the main staircase to the courtyard, which is also placed on top of the car park. The main stair is planned with many planting boxes and one more big tree. 14

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS (made in Rhino, SketchUp and Illustrator by me)

Diagram of the shadows and requirements from the local plan: 2500mm free area from the facade.

Primary pedestrian flows from and to the main access roads and potential areas for bicycle parking and outdoor fitness in the shade.

New islands that support primary pedestrian flows connected to the free area min. 2500mm from the facade.

Raised terrain to create good growth conditions for trees and shrubs.

Terrain, benches, trees and shrubs create spaces of a different nature: • recreational area at the west end in the sunny part, • meeting place in the middle, • fitness area in the semi-shaded area at the east end, • shaded flexible area next to the common indoor areas at the eastern end for stays, communal meals or other activities, • bicycle parking at the most shaded part. 16

DENSIFICATION OF ZHANGJIAKOU / Hebei province , China Lund University, Architecture School Sustainable Urban Dynamics, Autumn 2015, Sweden

BACKGROUND The city of Zhangjiakou is located in the Hebei province in Northern China approx. 200 km from Beijing. The Central City of Zhangjiakou has approx. 700 000 inhabitants. In 2022 it will host some of the Winter Olympics events. Currently China has 20% of the world’s population and only 7% of the world´s arable land which means – they cannot feed themselves. Hebei province, where Zhangjiekou is located, is 4th biggest farming area of China, and about half of Zhangjiakou region is arable land. The average population growth of Zhangjiakou is approx. 2,5% per year or 16 000 new people every year, and they all need somewhere to live. The Southern part of the existing city is covered with farmlands, but the municipality of Zhangjiakou is planning to extend the city and take over around 60 km2 of them. At the same time, if we look at the existing city, there are a lot of unused plots in it like old industrial sites and other vacant spaces. Therefore, MY CONCEPT IS BASED ON THREE MAIN ISSUES: 1.

To avoid urban sprawl, I’m planning to infill the existing city and to densify it.

2.

To create better connections within the city, I’m prioritizing mobility of pedestrians or bicyclists.

3.

To improve biodiversity and life quality, I have added a challenge to make the city greener.

CONCEPT

make it green

Make a use of the vacant land and street space in the existing city; Infill existing city with new buildings and new programs; Increase mixture and density.

Connect North and South with fast public transport and pedestrian and bicyclist paths; Connect East and West - both sides of he river and both sides of the old train line.

Increase greenery in the city to improve air quality; Create a green network to improve urban ecosystem and biodiversity, and to improve community access and recreation opportunities.

MY STRATEGY FOR THE SITE IS: 1.

To create a pedestrian network connecting the North and South and East and West parts of the city;

2.

To introduce new building typologies to reach bigger density in terms of people per square meter and new programs;

3.

To generate an urban life, I’m adding a public building – museum, improving the waterfront and activating ground floors in the center of the site,

4.

And I’m significantly increasing the amount of vegetation.

GREEN REMEDIATION OF VERKET AND MOSSEELVA / Moss , Norway Lund University, Architecture School Sustainable Urban Landscape, Spring 2015, Sweden

BACKGROUND The city of Moss is located in the fastest-growing and densest region of Norway. In coming decades the city of Moss will experience great changes in housing, infrastructure development and most likely – climate change problems like heavy rains and a sea level rise. As Moss is a former industrial city, a big part of it is polluted and also the social life of Moss deserves some recovery.

THE CONCEPT OF THIS PROJECT IS BASED ON THREE MAIN ISSUES: 1.

Soil remediation because of the pollution;

2.

Improvement of functions and connections because former industrial areas like Verket is currently missing a clear function and relation to the city, and Moss as a city is missing greater scale culture building;

3.

Prevention of flooding risks because of sea level rise and heavy rains in the near future.

Dry Season

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Land can be wet, but it is covered with vegetation, which will work as a filtration zone.

The proposal offers to develop the Verket area in a mixed-use district with a seaside park and wetlands on the West side in respect to possible sea level rise, a new calm residential area in the North, and a mixed-use district in the South with a new culture building and Main Square. Along the streets and next to the high slope differences storm water canals are provided.

Seasonal flooding Land will be flooded, but the boardwalk won’t be affected. Vegetation of the flooded area will be partly visible and will work as a filtration zone.

Social, environmental and economical remediation One of the project’s aims is to remediate the Verket area through the use of plants – phytoremediation. Phytoremediation provides mitigation of pollutant concentrations in contaminated soils, water and air. Ground waters and storm waters will be treated before they reach the ocean and the soil is treated at the site without excavating it.

Extreme flooding Most of the wetland park will be flooded; parts of the boardwalks can be under the water. Residential and business district won’t be affected.

Gradually increasing plantations in Verket with plants, which can treat the soil, is a long process with low costs that gives a time for social remediation – ‘Life Before the City’. This motto is borrowed from the Koge Kyst project in Denmark, and it means cultural interventions as a part of development, bringing people to the area before actually building, testing ideas and inviting society to take part in developing their city.
