Increase the Life of Your Hardware Investment 1. Heat Temperature is a significant factor in the life of your hardware. Hardware, like servers, are a big investment and you want to treat them well. It is ideal to have your equipment in a room where the temperature can be regulated – with a thermostat, a portable air conditioning unit, or at least a fan. Place a large fan at the back of your equipment rack pointed directly at the hardware (or in front of it). If fans do not fix the problem, a portable air conditioning unit is a wise investment. 2. Humidity If humidity is too high >60%, electrical components can be damaged, and condensation can occur. If the humidity it too low, <30%, electricity can arch and produce static. If the room is not ventilated with your HVAC system, you might run into an issue with humidity – dehumidifiers in summer and humidifiers in winter may be required. 3. Power Sudden loss of power is NOT good for electronics. Servers need to be on an Uninterrupted Power Source (UPS) 4. Dust Hardware closets, especially with a fan blowing, need to be cleaned and dusted also! Sweep and dust the floors and vents. You do not need to touch the equipment and risk knocking out a vital connection.
You can participate in the care of your equipment by installing thermometers and hygrometers, like the ThermoPro TP50 Digital Hygrometer (Amazom, $11)
Integrity IT can monitor Temperature and Humidity with a device called an environmental probe. Your power supplies, a UPS, can be monitored if it has a remote monitoring card installed. This monitoring alerts the service team by creating a ticket on the Triage board. Integrity IT | 3080 Harrodsburg Rd., Ste 104 | Lexington, KY 40503 | 859.253.4284 | www.integrityky.com
