“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s need but not every man’s greed.“ -Mahatma Gandhi In one of my previous editorials, I spoke about how consumption is the mother of all the factors. Well, what could be better than EARTH DAY to reflect on today’s most pressing environmental issues? Let us ask ourselves a basic question: What should be the most essential element to facilitate buying? If the answer is MONEY, think twice. One may need to check the basics of one’s life and understand what actually should be the reason for any purchase. Now, think again. Is it money? A NEED-BASED purchase, after a thorough thought process, is the best gift one could give to mother nature. Let’s think! Do we really need a straw for a drink? Or, a new gadget? How about carrying our own water bottles? After all, it is consumption that triggers the cycle of production and supply. Pollution is an unavoidable by-product of the process of production. Better India is the reality which has to be shaped by us, all of us. Teacher : Why are people always tired on Earth Day? Student : Because they just finished a March.

HA

Every saturday evening, a bunch of friends and I, meet at The Orange Copper restaurant to listen to true, interesting incidents. Last time, Mohit narrated how his colony members were able to catch a thief who had been stealing in that area for three months. Prior to that, Vikram had recounted how a woman came to his father’s pawn shop and sold a diary bearing Dilip Kumar’s signature and an Urdu couplet written in his handwriting. Today was my turn. Coincidentally, it was my birthday too. My friends sat all around the table eating slices of the black forest cake I had just cut as I began to talk. ‘Although our ancestors left a lot for us, a silver wrist watch was the most peculiar one. Several generations back, we used to be quite poor, and someone in the family decided to start a clothing business, which as you all know, we still own. This watch was bought from the first profits of that business and it was supposed to signify all the honest hard work which brought us out of poverty.

'Our elders used to say that the watch loved our family too much and refused to leave us, no matter what'. ‘My great grandfather once lost it on his way home. An honest man picked it up from the streets and handed it over to the police. The police officer knew my great grandfather personally and had seen him wearing it, so he returned it to him.’ ‘During the time my grandfather wore the watch, a maid stole it. Two weeks later, due to various circumstances, she realised her mistake and returned it to my grandfather and asked for his forgiveness.’ ‘Once, my father’s business was operating at a loss. He was hard pressed for money so he mortgaged the watch. The business that was bringing in no income for six months, suddenly started showing profits. Within two months, Daddy was

able to pay off the debt and bring the watch back.’ 'That’s interesting, Sameer,' said Vikram. 'Have you brought it with you? I’d like to see it.' 'No. I wanted to test if all this is merely a coincidence,' I replied. 'So what did you do?' asked Vikram. 'Four days ago, I went to the Residency, the graveyard. I entered the graveyard, which usually remains empty. I dug up a hole and buried the watch there,' I said. 'What? Why?' asked Vikram again. 'I wanted to see what happens,' I quipped. 'Did the watch have the initials A. M. K. engraved on the back of it by any chance?' asked Vikram. I was shocked. 'Yes, indeed! How on earth did you know that?' Everybody turned to look at Vikram. 'My great grandfather got his initials carved onto it after it was lost and found. They stand for Ashraf Mohammad Khan, his name.' 'Well, it seems the graveyard was not entirely empty after all when you visited it,' replied Vikram with a smile.

'A small-time thief was probably hiding under a tree from where he could see you. He thought you were hiding a treasure or something and, as soon as you left, he dug up the hole and took out the watch.' 'He brought it to sell at my father’s shop.' 'My father gave it to me as a present. I wore it, but it was too loose for my wrist. So, I thought I'd get it tightened later and put it in my pocket.' Then, taking out the watch from his pocket Vikram said, 'Here it is. You can have it as your birthday present,' he added.

HOWEVER, DADDY WASN'T SCARED OF ANYTHING. BHOPU TRIED TO SCARE HIS DAD.

BOO! IT'S NOT FAIR. YOU'RE NOT SCARED OF ANYTHING.

ONE FINE DAY, THEY HAD A VISITOR…

BUSINESS VISIONARIES MAHINDRA JEEP

IN 1973, MAHINDRA HAD MONOPOLY IN THE JEEP MARKET IN INDIA. THEY WERE SELLING FOURTEEN THOUSAND VEHICLES EVERY YEAR, COSTING ABOUT INR 35, 000.

Script: Priyanka Saxena | Illustration: Stallionstudios88

IN THE SAME YEAR, AN OIL CRISIS HIT THE WORLD MARKET, BECAUSE THE OIL PRODUCING NATIONS REDUCED PRODUCTION AND INCREASED THE PRICE OF OIL FOURFOLD.

75 EMPLOYEES WERE LAID OFF, AND THE OVER ALL MORALE OF THE COMPANY WENT DOWN.

THE SALE OF JEEP DECLINED FROM 14000 TO 7,000 IN 3 YEARS…

16

Apr 2018

LAID OFF: TO FIRE, DISCHARGE SOMEONE FROM WORK

ONE MORNING, THE INNOVATION TEAM HEAD, KUMAR SARDESAI (KS) CALLED FOR A MEETING WITH HIS TEAM.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE COMPANY? EMPLOYEES ARE LEAVING, CUSTOMERS' TRUST IS SHAKEN AND IF IT CONTINUES LIKE THIS, WE MIGHT JUST HAVE TO SHUT THE BUSINESS.

WE WILL NOT LET THIS HAPPEN BECAUSE WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, THE TOUGH GET GOING.

YES, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.

I HAVE FULL FAITH IN MY TEAM. NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR US IF WE PUT OUR MIND TO IT. THINK ABOUT IT AND LET’S CATCH UP IN TWO DAYS.

SO, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NOW?

AFTER TWO DAYS…

SHOULD WE CHANGE THE ENGINE FROM PETROL TO DIESEL? BUT THAT IS NOT AN EASY JOB… WE HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND ALL THE SPECIFICATIONS AND TECHNICALITIES INVOLVED.

YES! BUT, REMEMBER, IT IS EITHER EASY OR IMPOSSIBLE. TAKE YOUR PICK.

PUT OUR MIND TO IT: TO CONCENTRATE ON DOING SOMETHING TAKE YOUR PICK: TO CHOOSE SOMETHING Apr 2018

17

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE IN SUCH A SHORT TIME?

OK. SO YOU PICKED ‘IMPOSSIBLE’. NOW, LET’S ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE. KS AND HIS TEAM WORKED DAY AND NIGHT FOR SIX MONTHS.

18

Apr 2018

SIX MONTHS LATER…

WE HAVE FINALLY DEVELOPED AN ENGINE WHICH IS NOT ONLY PERFECT FOR INDIAN ROADS BUT ALSO SAVES MONEY BY USING DIESEL INSTEAD OF PETROL. THIS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE HARD WORK AND INNOVATIVE THINKING.

THE ENGINE WAS AN INSTANT HIT IN THE MARKET. THE MAHINDRA JEEP SALES WERE ON THE RISE AGAIN.

IT IS PROVED,"GENIUS IS ONE PERCENT INSPIRATION, NINETY-NINE PERCENT PERSPIRATION."

AS IS SAID, “UNITY IS STRENGTH. WHEN THERE IS TEAMWORK AND COLLABORATION, WONDERFUL THINGS CAN BE ACHIEVED.”

TEAM WORK AND INNOVATION ARE THE KEYS TO SUCCESS IN ANY BUSINESS.

MAHINDRA GROUP FOLLOWS THIS POLICY TO DATE. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS A WORK OF NON-FICTION AND IS BASED ON TRUE EVENTS THAT HAVE BEEN SOURCED FROM THE INTERNET. The culprit behind punctured tyres IT'S A PEACEFUL SATURDAY MORNING.

HEY, BUDDY ... WASSUP… I THINK YOU NEED A WASH.

DAVID WALKS IN...

AH.. NOT AGAIN... WE NEED TO SAVE WATER..

HI, DAV, HOW IS IT GOING?

ALL GOOD BROTHER, EXCEPT I’VE GOT A FLAT TYRE AGAIN. DAVID NARRATES WHAT HAPPENED WHILE TIGER LOOKS ON...

A FLAT TYRE SHOULD NOT UPSET ANYONE, BUDDY. NOT EVEN IF YOU GET THREE FLAT TYRES IN FOUR DAYS?

20

Apr 2018

KABIR AND DAVID LEAVE HOME FOR COLLEGE WHERE KABIR IS A PROFESSOR AND DAVID A COMPUTER LAB ASSISTANT.

LET’S GO TO COLLEGE NOW. WITH ME AROUND, NO TYRES WILL EVER FALL SHORT OF AIR SUPPLY.

YEAH!

MS GEETA WALKS INTO THE STAFF ROOM. SHE LOOKS TIRED AND IRRITATED.

GOOD MORNING, MS GEETA. HOW IS IT GOING? IT’S THE SECOND TIME IN TWO DAYS THAT MY SCOOTER GOT PUNCTURED. KABIR LEAVES NOTHING TO CHANCE.

DAVID, MS GEETA, WHERE DID YOUR BIKES GET PUNCTURED?

IT CANNOT BE A MERE CO-INCIDENCE. SUDDENLY PEOPLE ARE REPORTING OF FREQUENT FLAT TYRES.

SARDAR PATEL MARG... SHAHEED BHAGAT SINGH ROAD... KABIR VISUALIZES THE CITY MAP...

BOTH THESE ROADS ARE CLOSE TO EACH OTHER... DEFINITELY THE FLAT TYRES ARE NOT CO-INCIDENTS. IT’S TIME FOR A LATE NIGHT FLIGHT..

Apr 2018

21

AIRMAN FLIES OVER SARDAR PATEL MARG.

SO FAR ALL CLEAR, NOTHING WRONG SEEMS TO BE HAPPENING HERE, LET ME GO OVER THE OTHER AREAS.

AIRMAN SPOTS A MAN ON THE ROAD ENGAGING IN SOME SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY.

WHAT IS THAT GENTLEMAN LOOKING AT ON THE ROAD? THAT TOO AT THIS LATE HOUR? AIRMAN FINDS THE MAN DROPPING NAILS ON THE ROAD.

AH, SO HE IS THE GUY CAUSING TYRES TO PUNCTURE, LET ME TEACH HIM A LESSON. AIRMAN SERVES THE STARTER: AN AIR KICK...

22

Apr 2018

NEXT, THE MAIN COURSE: AIR PUNCH...

OMG…WHO IS HITTING ME ?

AIRMAN TRANSFORMS TO KABIR...

WHO ARE YOU... WHERE DID YOU COME FROM? WHEN DID YOU COME? ONLY I WILL ASK QUESTIONS AND YOU WILL ANSWER... WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS..? THE MAN CONFESSES HIS CRIME OF PUNCTURING THE VEHICLES TO BOOST HIS BUSINESS OF FIXING PUNCTURES.

DID YOU EVER REALIZE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF AN AMBULANCE CARRYING A CRITICAL PATIENT GOT A FLAT TYRE? SOMEONE COULD MISS THEIR JOURNEY BY MISSING A TRAIN OR A FLIGHT...WORST CASE, A BIKER MAY HAVE A FATAL FALL...

E POLICE. THE CULPRIT TO TH KABIR HANDS OVER

WE WILL FIX HIM IN THE LOCKUP NOW. SIR, HERE IS THE MAN WHO CUNNINGLY SCATTERED NAILS ALL OVER THE ROAD SO THAT THE TYRES GOT PUNCTURED. HE HAS A TYRE PUNCTURE REPAIR SHOP JUST A KILOMETER AWAY FROM HERE.

THANKS, KABIR. I AM NOT SURE, BUT HE COULD BE THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR JEEP TYRE PUNCTURE THIS MORNING.

About the Olympics Script: Sana Rizwan HEY, I CAN SEE THAT YOU HAVE EARNED A MEDAL.

Illustration: Sabbir Hussain YES, SPORTS ACTIVITIES ARE ON, AND I HAVE WON A GOLD MEDAL IN THE 100 MTS RACE.

CONGRATS! ONE DAY, YOU WILL RUN LIKE USAIN BOLT, THE OLYMPIC WINNER.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES ARE A FESTIVAL OF SPORTS. I HAVE HEARD THAT PEOPLE FROM AROUND THE WORLD MEET TO PLAY AND WATCH SPORTS DURING OLYMPICS.

TRUE! THE MOTTO OF THE OLYMPIC GAMES IS “FASTER, HIGHER, AND STRONGER”. WHERE AND WHEN DID THESE GAMES BEGIN?

38

Apr 2018

OH! WE ALL WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THE OLYMPICS.

THESE GAMES BEGAN AROUND 2500 YEARS AGO AT OLYMPIA IN GREECE. THIS ANCIENT GREEK STATUE SHOWS A MAN THROWING A DISCUS.

BUT, THE FIRST MODERN OLYMPIC GAMES WERE HELD ONLY IN 1896. AND YOU KNOW WHAT, NOW WHEN NEARLY HALF OF ALL THE ATHLETES ARE WOMEN, THERE WERE NONE AT THAT TIME.

LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT THE SYMBOLS OF OLYMPICS.

REALLY?

"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES IS NOT WINNING, BUT TAKING PART; THE ESSENTIAL THING IN LIFE IS NOT CONQUERING, BUT FIGHTING WELL." -PIERRE DE COUBERTIN

(FOUNDER OF MODERN OLYMPICS)

THOSE ARE THE OLYMPIC FLAME AND THE OLYMPIC FLAG.

I WATCHED THE TORCH RELAY OF 2016 OLYMPICS AT BRAZIL.

I DID SEE THAT FLAG. IT HAS FIVE RINGS ON IT.

WAY TO GO, GUYS! ONE ATHLETE TAKES THE OLYMPIC OATH AT THE START OF EVERY OLYMPIC GAMES. HE OR SHE PROMISES TO FOLLOW THE RULES AND PLAY FAIR.

WHERE ARE THE OLYMPIC GAMES STAGED?

THE OLYMPICS ARE HELD IN DIFFERENT CITIES AROUND THE WORLD. LOTS OF DIFFERENT BUILDINGS ARE BUILT FOR THEM. ALSO, AN OLYMPIC VILLAGE IS BUILT FOR THE ATHLETES TO LIVE IN.

WHY THE MOTTO “FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER”?

THE WINNER OF THE OLYMPIC 100-METRES RACE IS CALLED THE FASTEST MAN OR WOMAN IN THE WORLD. POLE VAULTERS CAN JUMP HIGHER THAN A DOUBLE-DECKER BUS.

WEIGHTLIFTERS LIFT WEIGHTS THAT ARE HEAVIER THAN THEM.

UNBELIEVABLE!

OH MY!

SO THE MOTTO... TO WIN THE GOLD MEDAL, THE ATHLETE HAS TO BE FASTER, JUMP HIGHER AND BE STRONGER THAN ANY OF THE OTHER PARTICIPANTS.

OF COURSE! THIS GYMNAST HAS PRACTICED FOR MANY YEARS TO BE AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES.

THEY MUST NEED TO TRAIN VERY HARD THEN.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE NEXT OLYMPIC GAMES BE HELD?

IN 2020 IN TOKYO, JAPAN. BRAVO!
