Is Nutrition all about diet? Is it merely about what we eat, or avoid cautiously? Well, it may not possibly be limited to these points only. Food, an essential element of our lives, today, is no more limited to merely a means of sustainability, but is a lot to do with lifestyle too. Deeper pockets of this era have only meant easy availability of pleasures in all dimensions of life, and the sense of taste prevails on the pinnacle of this pleasure- thanks to the daily biological need, hunger. At times, I feel, taste buds, under the veil of hunger, are a trap laid by nature to keep a balance of life. The more that one succumbs to it, the shorter becomes the life span. I have come to believe that the word NUTRITION has a deeper meaning. It is about a WAY OF BEING. One must understand that the mere availability of money is not the only criteria to indulge in pleasure, especially the one which soothes the taste buds. The age-old proverb ‘A healthy mind resides in a healthy body’ has now escalated to- ‘Only a Healthy Mind can nurture a Healthy body.’ Dear parents and beloved children, it is never too early or too late to work towards being the healthiest you. So, why wait? Remember, inspiration is the way! Have a Nutritious and Healthy July! ARE YOU READY TO GO TO SAKSHI'S BIRTHDAY PARTY, MIA?

Script: Lakshmi Mitter Illustration: Amit Mandal OUTSIDE SAKSHI’S HOUSE…

Hello!

WHERE IS SAKSHI? HER CYCLE ISN’T THERE.

MAYBE IT HAS BEEN SENT FOR REPAIRS.

HELLO, UNCLE.

WHAT’S GOING ON? WHERE IS SAKSHI?

SAKSHI HAS BEEN MISSING FOR AN HOUR NOW.

I NOTICED THAT HER CYCLE WASN'T PARKED AT THE FRONT DOOR, AND WE KNOW SHE PREFERS CYCLING TO WALKING.

Jul 2018

THAT'S WHAT EVERYONE'S BEEN ASKING. MA, DID AUNTY TELL YOU ANYTHING ABOUT SAKSHI?

NOT REALLY! WHEN SHE CAME OUT OF HER ROOM, SAKSHI WAS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.

AUNTY, HER CYCLE ISN'T OUTSIDE. MAYBE, SHE'S GONE SOMEWHERE.

WHERE COULD SHE HAVE GONE? I AM WORRIED SICK!

DON'T WORRY, AUNTY. I WILL ASK AROUND. MIA STEPS OUT IN THE GARDEN. SHE HEARS A CYCLE BELL RING. SHE FOLLOWS THE SOUND.

SAKSHI, IS THAT YOU?

MIA SPOTS A COUPLE OF MONKEYS FIDDLING AROUND WITH THE BELL. SHE NOTICES THAT THE DOOR OF CAR GARAGE IS SHUT.

SAKSHI, ARE YOU IN THERE?

MIA, THANK GOD! I CAME HERE TO PARK MY CYCLE, BUT WENT IN TO SWITCH ON THE GARAGE LIGHT FIRST AND I ACCIDENTLY LOCKED MYSELF IN. IT HAS SCARED THE LIFE OUT OF ME. CAN YOU GUESS WHAT MUST HAVE HAPPENED? SAKSHI WANTED TO PARK HER CYCLE IN THE GARAGE. HOWEVER, THE GARAGE DOOR SHUT TIGHT AND IT PROBABLY GOT JAMMED.

the Reference book Ay u s h w a s a n e d u c a t e d y e t unemployed youth. He was thinking about his state of affairs, as he lay down in the local park under a tree one day. He soon fell asleep. When he woke up in the afternoon, he noticed a small leather briefcase lying a few feet away. There was no possible owner in sight. In fact, there was no one in sight at all. The scorching sun

of the month of June was belching out intense heat, and the park was mostly empty. He opened the briefcase and found a thick, large book inside. It was an old Bible. The back of the book was stamped: REF ERENCE Public Library

06

Jul 2018

He walked his way to the library. There was a small wooden cabin at the end of the stairs. Ayush entered and said, 'I suppose this belongs here.' The manager took it from him and inspected it. His eyes opened wide. 'Oh yes, it does. Where did you find it?' asked the manager. 'In the Park. I found it lying in this briefcase,' answered Ayush. 'My God! We have been searching for it up and down the whole town. Do you know what this is?' asked the manager. 'It’s the Bible,' said Ayush. 'Well, yes! But it's not just any ordinary Bible. It’s Gutenberg’s Bible,' said the manager. Ayush didn’t know what that meant. So, the manager explained. 'The Gutenberg Bible was the first book printed with a moveable metal type press, which was invented by Johann Gutenberg. It allowed printing of several books in a short time.' 'So?' questioned Ayush. 'Only 48 copies of this book exist in the world today,' said the manager. 'Are you saying that this book is worth thousands of rupees?' asked Ayush. 'My dear Sir, in 1987, one of these books was auctioned at $ 4.9 million at Christie’s, New York. What I'm saying is that this book is worth almost 30 crores;

not just a few thousands,' explained the manager. The very next day, Ayush was invited to have tea with two members of the board. The staff came to shake hands with him, and a local newspaper published his photo along with the book. And what more, he was hired at the library to particularly take care of the reference section.

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY. ONCE, AT A WILDLIFE PARK, ALL THE ANIMALS WERE TALKING ABOUT THE NEW POSTER.

THE COMPETITION BEGAN AND THE PENGUINS WON THE GOLD STAR FOR 'THE MOST POPULAR ANIMAL'.

VERY WELL DESERVED, PENGUINS! THE NEXT STAR WAS FOR THE ‘TIDIEST ANIMAL’. THE GIRAFFE ALWAYS KEPT HIS AREA SPICK AND SPAN, BUT IT WAS AWARDED TO LEMURS.

NEXT IN LINE WAS THE ‘BEST TRICK’ AWARD. EVERY ANIMAL IN THE PARK SEEMED TO HAVE A HIDDEN TALENT.

WELL DONE, EVERYONE!

I NEED TO IGNITE THE CURIOSITY AND ZEAL TO LEARN IN THESE KIDS.

NEXT DAY, DHIRUBHAI HAD AN IDEA.

DADA, BUT I AM GOOD AT SCHOOL. WHY DO WE NEED A TUTOR?

SURESH BHAI, LET’S FIND A GOOD TUTOR WHO WOULD DO MORE THAN JUST TEACH OUR CHILDREN. SOON, DHIRUBHAI FOUND A GOOD TEACHER.

MAHENDRA, I WOULD BE GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD SPEND TIME WITH MY KIDS.

THE PLEASURE WILL BE MINE, DHIRUBHAI.

HAHAHA. ASK YOUR TEACHER TOMORROW.

NEXT DAY.

REALLY! IS THAT POSSIBLE? SIR, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO TEACH US?

YOU WILL TEACH YOURSELF WHATEVER YOU WANT. I WILL JUST GUIDE AND MENTOR YOU.

YES, MY DEAR KIDS. ABRAHAM LINCOLN LEARNT TO READ AND WRITE ON HIS OWN, JUST ON THE ACCOUNT OF HIS WILL.

THERE ARE MANY LIKE HIM. RAMANUJAN WAS A SELF-TAUGHT MATHEMATICIAN. BUT, SIR, WASN’T HE A BORN GENIUS?

ItS sunny again for Sunnyside Lake Sunnyside Lake, being the most beautiful lake in Calton district, is popular with tourists. The Halt and the Walker Family have lived next to the lake for generations. The Walkers have two girls, 12-year-old Emily and 10-year-old Lara. The Halts have two boys, 14-year-old James and 13-year old Henry. The four friends always hung out together beside the lake. Emily and Lara’s dog, Quincy, a black poodle, was smart, and everyone’s favourite. ‘Emily! Emily! Wake up,' cried Lara one day. Emily woke up, and they went running to the lake.

Sharbani iis a grade d 3 student of Pathways School, Gurgaon. She loves to write. As a small child, she started writing a diary. One would often find notes written by her all over the house. She enjoys reading, and watching plays and movies. When asked, she says it is there that she gets her ideas from. She also gets them from her dreams. She likes using descriptive language and her stories are full of them. Her favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Dick King Smith and Liz Pichon. Illustration: Agantuk

Jul 2018

The four friends decided to go swimming in the lake. They found some strange looking mud at the bottom of the lake. Henry and Lara collected some mud and water in a jar and took it to Mr Halt. Mr. Halt said to the children, ‘Let me go test this at my lab.‘ As they went back to the lake, they saw Quincy holding something in her mouth. It was a card and on it was written ‘Sunnyside Soap Factory, Calton District’. The card made them curious. ‘Quincy is giving us a sign, guys! Let’s follow her.' When Quincy stopped, they realised they had reached Sunnyside Soap Factory. ‘Let’s be very careful,' cautioned James as they entered the factory. As they walked inside, they came across, on the notice board, a sort of a time table. On careful inspection, they realised that it was a charted timetable for disposing chemicals in Sunnyside Lake.

Jul 2018

‘I wonder what could be e inside,' said Henry. The four friends were scared. They saw a man sitting on the chair. His face was long, thin and mean, he was tall and had cruel eyes. ‘What are you doing here?’ questioned the man. Lara replied courageously, ‘We know what you at y ou are r up to. We are not leaving here until you stop your dirty business!’ ‘And how exactly will you do that?’ asked the e man, man,, grinning cruelly. James came forward and said, ‘I’ve already texted our parents, see this,' he pointed at his phone. ‘You little rats!’ he screamed trying to catch them. The four friends ducked. Suddenly, Quincy jumped and caught the man’s leg. ‘Getttimoooff! Gettimmooff!’ screamed the man, who was now, clearly, petrified. The security personnel heard the noise and came running. ‘GETTIMMOOOOOOF! GETTIMMOOOOOF! Don’t just stand there. GETIMMOOOOFF!’ screamed the man ferociously.

Just then, a very familiar sound reverberated through the room, ‘Nee Nou Nee Nou’. The man was shocked. ‘It’s the

police!’ cried the man. ‘So, you are the one who is ruining our lake, eh,’ said the police officer. ‘Arrest him! He has been dumping chemicals in our precious lake, he’s the one,' screamed the children. ‘What’s your name?’ the police officer asked him. ‘I am Joe Darden, I run this factory.' ‘You are under arrest,' said the police officer. Sunnyside Lake was cleaned up and became everyone’s favourite again. Calton District was talking about the bravery of the children. Quincy was declared the local hero. n ssio e r p Ex What would you have done if you found out that someone was dumping trash in your neighbourhood park? MY MOTHER IS UNWELL AND MY DAD SPENDS THE WHOLE DAY TOILING AT WORK. HE IS UNABLE TO MAKE LUNCH FOR ME. I WAS VERY HUNGRY.

JAY?

JAY, IS IT YOU WHO TOOK MY WAFFLE YESTERDAY? AND MY RAJMA RICE?

FRIENDS, LET US BE PATIENT AND HEAR JAY'S SIDE OF THE STORY.

JAY, WE ARE SORRY!

OH, JAY, YOU COULD HAVE SIMPLY SHARED YOUR PROBLEM WITH US. WE ALL WILL GLADLY SHARE OUR FOOD WITH YOU.

JAY, TELL ME WHAT YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD IS. I'LL GET IT FOR YOU TOMORROW.

AND I WILL BRING YOUR FAVORITE FRUIT. PRISHA, I AM SO GLAD TO HAVE FRIENDS LIKE YOU.

Once again! On reader's demand...

Script: Priyanka Saxena Illustration: Mehak Jain

HEY, AKASH! I HEARD THAT YOU ALL ARE SHIFTING TO JAIPUR FOR THREE YEARS?

HMMM...

WHY ARE YOU SOUNDING SO SAD? I AM GOING TO MISS MY FRIENDS THERE.

YEAH! I AM NERVOUS ABOUT MEETING NEW CLASSMATES AND TEACHERS. WILL THEY BE EQUALLY GOOD?

HMMM, YOU ARE NERVOUS BECAUSE YOU FEEL THAT YOU WILL BE LONELY THERE.

I UNDERSTAND...

DO YOU REMEMBER, LAST MONTH, WHEN SID GOT SO NERVOUS THAT HE WAS SHAKING IN HIS BOOTS.

SHAKING IN HIS BOOTS: TO BE AFRAID.

YES, I REMEMBER.

RIGHT, AND HE CAME THIRD IN THE COMPETITION.

YES! HE TREATED ME TO AN ICE CREAM.

ALSO WHEN ANU WAS NERVOUS AFTER PLAY AUDITIONS.

YES, WE PLAYED WITH HER TILL SHE FELT BETTER. BEING NERVOUS WAS NOT GOING TO HELP HER ANYWAY.

LET'S LOOK AT JAIPUR AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT A NEW PLACE AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS.

EXACTLY! YOU SAID IT!

YOU ARE A FRIENDLY PERSON! I AM SURE YOU WILL MAKE A LOT OF NEW FRIENDS AND HAVE FUN.

WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR! KEEP IN TOUCH.

SURE, KARAN. I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. THANKS, KARAN, FOR HELPING ME. Jul 2018
