Why does it matter? Children’s affection for superheroes is evident. Some like Batman, some like Spiderman, some are a fan of Chhota Bheem. The list is endless. However, I implore you to think. Keep churning your thought process till you notice an alarmingly low ratio of female protagonists or heroes. Let us explore if this fact is limited to the current era only. Well, chances are, we may not like the painful reality that even history has given us only a few Rani Lakshmibais! The attributes of female protagonists are undoubtedly different from the oft-repeated ones of their male counterparts. But, that should not restrict us from including them here, while nurturing young ones. This will not only instill a sense of empowerment in girls at an early age, but also inspire boys to respect their counterparts. As a father to a girl, I consider this my responsibility; and being the editor of iNTELLYJELLY, I try and find ways to execute it. What is important is the perspective. I made a choice between a wand- yielding fairy on one side and Partner’s Player Prisha on the other-who is pretty effective in team building; a warrior with big, bulky muscles on one side and Mrs. Nita Ambani on the other, and so on.. We, at iNTELLYJELLY, appeal to all the parents to ensure playing a role of a gender-diverse protagonist in the lives of their children, each day. iNTELLYJELLY’s powerful female protagonists delve on this aspect, subtly but surely, in every issue. Animesh, Editor An engineer and an alumnus of IIM Calcutta, Animesh wears many hats with ease, but the one that fits him best is being iJey to the crew of iNTELLYJELLY.

JUST THEN, A MAN, WHO LOOKS LIKE HE HAS ANTS IN HIS PANTS, APPEARS. MIA SMELLS A RAT.

AND THE BALCONY OF EACH FLOOR IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM THE BALCONY DIRECTLY ABOVE IT.

I DROPPED MY SHOVEL WHILE WORKING IN THE BALCONY ABOVE. COULD I GO AND GET IT?

MRS RAO, I KNOW WHO THE CULPRIT IS.

The Study Schedule The Cathedral of St. John School had closed three weeks before the exams for the preparation leave. It seemed to Zafar that all the students had finished with their syllabus except for him. However, he had a plan. The first thing he did after returning home was to prepare a study schedule for the holiday. He recalled, 'If you’re failing to plan, then you’re planning to fail.' He had everything chalked out: 7:15-9:00 am

Zafar believed that if he could stick to this schedule, he would be able to finish, if not all, the majority of the curriculum. His parents would be proud. Alas, poor him! What young Zafar failed to realise was that making a plan and implementing it were two very different things. Next morning, the alarm went off at 6:30. 'Ten more minutes won’t make much of a difference,’ he thought and went back to sleep. When his mother shook him by the arm, it was already 10:13 am. Zafar sprang out of bed, got all freshened up, had his breakfast, and got down to study at a quarter past eleven. He began with arranging numbers on the number line. He tried three questions but his answers didn’t match with the ones given at the back of the book. 'I need some exercise and fresh air so that my mind wakes up properly,' he convinced himself and went to the park.

After playing on the swing sets and see-saws, he was all set to return when he saw two of his friends. 'Hey, Zafar, come, let’s play cricket. I’ll beat you,’ exclaimed one of his friends. 'Ha! You're forgetting, Abhishek, it’s me who beats you every time. But, I've got to study today,' replied Zafar. ‘Are you scared?' countered his friend. 'Okay, let’s do it then.' Zafar was convinced that self-respect should not be compromised at any cost. He returned home at 4:35 pm, all drenched in mud and sweat. 'I need to take a bath. A healthy mind needs a healthy body.' When he sat down for a late lunch, he discarded the idea of studying while eating. Although, he did lose track of time once he started playing puzzles while munching on his food.

Finally, when Zafar sat down to study, he couldn’t memorize a thing. He was depressed. Would a quick game on the mobile help? The purpose of the device was to provide comfort to the user, he thought. And what better time than when one is feeling low? Zafar was exhausted. His eyes drooped and he dozed off on the sofa itself. It was 10 pm on the clock! Without realising, Zafar had managed to waste one whole day in his schedule. Story value: Importance of sticking to schedules and timetable is of utmost importance.

THE PIXEL VILLAGE There was once a poor carpenter named Jonathan. He was a kind man who had lived all along in Pixel village. His relatives lived on the opposite side of the village. He had very few relatives; his old mother, his wife, his brother and his old father-in-law. He sold wood and made furniture for his bread and butter. One day, while taking a break from his work, Jonathan carved a wooden elf. After resuming work, Jonathan started chopping wood for his bonfire; he cut a big tree trunk. When he tried taking it home, the wood did not move an inch. He tried and tried, but to no avail. All of a

sudden, the tree trunk fell down. When he looked at the trunk, he found a young and happy, beaver- teethed wooden elf gnawing the wood on the trunk. He was in shock. 'A magic elf!' Jonathan thought to himself rather amused. Jonathan thought for a while that if he let the elf go, no one would believe him. So, he held it very tightly so that the elf could not run away. He thought, ' I will show this elf to the king, and he will reward me.' The wooden elf raged and pleaded, shouted and begged Jonathan, and struggled very hard to free itself. But, it had no such luck and finally gave up. After a while, the wooden elf dozed off, and Jonathan put the elf in a fine

little metal cage that he found on his way to the king's palace. On the way, the wooden elf heaved a loud sigh and said, 'If you let me go, I will grant you a wish. However, if you don't set me free, things will go haywire everywhere.' Jonathan said he did not care and rushed towards the palace and said, 'I cannot take such a big decision in such a hurry. Let me take you to the king.' The wooden elf looked six times uglier than before. In the court, the king looked at the ugly wooden elf. The king was so disgusted by the elf's looks that he decided to put the cage away for three days. When Jonathan informed the king about the elf granting wishes, everyone started quarreling. His old, blind mother wanted her sight back, his brother asked for immense wealth, his wife for many years now wished for a child and his father-in-law asked for a big house. Jonathan, himself wanted a free country because somewhere, deep inside his heart, he knew that Darth Village taking over Pixel Village was partly because of his deeds. However, the elf had promised to grant a single wish only. After thinking for two days, he finally approached the elf. 'Have you decided what you will wish for,' asked the elf. 'Yes, I have,' replied Jonathan. 'I wish that my mother sees my child rocking in a golden cradle from the fourth floor of my house in this free country,' he added. Jonathan's wishes were fulfilled. He set the elf free. Jonathan was now the richest and the happiest man in the whole of the Pixel Village. He was soon crowned the king and he lived happily ever after. SO, HE DECIDES TO BUILD HIMSELF HIS VERY OWN PRIVATE BEACH.

WHAT DO I NEED TO GET STARTED?

JIGUPUTTAR GETS INTO ACTION.

DRAW A BEACH SCENERY.

INFLATE THE 'OCEAN'.

USE A STICK TO HOLD THE SCENERY UPRIGHT.

TURN ON THE 'SUNLIGHT'. COVER THE GROUND WITH 'SAND'.

IT LOOKS AND FEELS LIKE A BEACH, BUT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE ONE.

INSTALL SOME BEACH 'WILDLIFE'.

AND ENJOY!

SOMETHING’S MISSING! AAH! THE SOOTHING SOUND OF THE OCEAN! OH! I KNOW WHAT I SHOULD DO. MAKE A TRIP TO THE REAL BEACH AND FIND A SHINY, GERM-FREE SEASHELL. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT SHOULD BE EMPTY FOR A CLEAR SOUND.

THE NEXT MORNING, AS PLANNED, JIGUPUTTAR GETS PICKED UP AT 7:30 AM. THEY DRIVE TO THE BEACH.

SURROUNDED BY FRIENDLY PEOPLE, HE DECIDES TO JOIN THE CROWD.

HE BUILDS CASTLES, TAKES PICTURES AND GOES FOR A SWIM. HE IS GLAD TO BE A PART OF THE CROWD.

BACK HOME, AFTER A DAY OF FUN IN THE SUN, JIGUPUTTAR IS INSPIRED TO MAKE ONE MORE IMPORTANT ADDITION TO HIS OWN BEACH...

NG READIIN CORNER

Giraffes Can't Dance Giraffes Can't Dance is a touching tale of Gerald the giraffe, who wants nothing more than to dance. The book gives us a great opportunity to discuss stereotypes. At the beginning of the book, the lions start laughing at Gerald even before he even starts dancing. The animals seems to make negative assumptions about Gerald’s dancing skills just because he is a giraffe When discussing the book with children, we can explore why the other animals make negative assumptions about Gerald. Did they see other giraffes dancing badly and assume that Gerald couldn’t dance? We could also apply this question to daily life. We can ask the first graders to investigate whether they ever make assumptions about others based on a group that they belong to. For example, do they ever think about someone differently because of the way they dress?

HEY, ISHANA!

Distress Script: Priyanka Saxena Illustration: Amit Mandal

NO, NOTHING.

HI, KAPIL, HOW ARE YOU?

BUT YOU LOOK ANXIOUS.

I AM GOOD. BUT WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU? REALLY! BUT HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT!

LOOK AT YOUR RED FACE AND DROOPY EYES.

YES, JUST LIKE WHEN YOU ARE HAPPY, SAD, OR EXCITED, IT IS VISIBLE ON YOUR FACE, ISN’T IT?

46

Jun 2018

OH! IS IT VISIBLE ON MY FACE?

ISHANA, IT IS SAID THAT FACIAL EXPRESSIONS ARE A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF EMOTION.

KAPIL, I AM WORRIED ABOUT MY RESULTS.

HMM...GOT THAT! BUT WHY DON’T YOU THINK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY? LIKE, GETTING A NEW TOY OR A VISIT G TO A WATER PARK OR PLAYING WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND.

WHICH WAS YOUR FAVOURITE RIDE? HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU GO ON THAT RIDE? HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE? I FEEL SO MUCH BETTER NOW, KAPIL.

YES, ISHANA, KEEP PRACTICING IT. Jun 2018
