It’s been a summer of swirling rumours in the licensing business. But while churn has been happening in some quarters, in other parts, new firms - or those which have been reinvigorated of late - have been making their mark.
IT’S BEEN a summer of swirling rumours in the licensing business. Coolabi, Chorion and Chapman Entertainment all found themselves the subject of industry gossip - key execs departed (either through choice or through circumstance) and in some cases properties have found themselves in entirely new portfolios. While all this churn has been happening in some quarters, in other parts, new companies - or those which are well established but have been reinvigorated of late - have been making their mark. Among them, V&S Entertainment will arrive at Olympia with a strong portfolio of licensees for its pre-school hit Everything’s Rosie; popular former Target execs Helen Howells and Oliver Ellis will debut Cloudbabies, the first property from Hoho Entertainment; and Michael Acton Smith will be explaining to everyone just how he turned Moshi Monsters from just another virtual world into the property every child wants right now. Meanwhile, BLE stalwart BBC Worldwide will be debuting no less than nine new brands, including The FA - a deal which raised many eyebrows across the industry when it was confirmed back in June, but shows that the firm is serious about broadening out its portfolio and its credentials as a licensing agent for third party brands. Brand Licensing Europe is always one of my favourite trade shows. Last year’s successful move to three days - while managing to maintain the buzz on the showfloor right up until closing time on the third day - plus the return of Disney to the pack this year has firmly cemented its position across Europe. Plus, with Licensing International increasingly looking like a show for the domestic US market, expect even more growth going forward, too. From new brands making their show debut, through to evergreen favourites, character and entertainment makes up the largest sector at Olympia... 4Kids Entertainment (Stand D070) A new series of Yu-Gi-Oh is set to launch soon, backed up by the arrival of the film Yu-Gi-Oh Bonds Beyond Time, with 4Kids hopeful this will boost the licensing drive. The firm will also be presenting Max Adventures – a new kids brand making its mark across Europe – plus Dinosaur King, which already has a substantial licensing programme behind it. Kennel Club and Crufts will also be displayed.

The firm will be debuting nine new properties at BLE. These include 64 Zoo Lane, The Adventures of Abney & Teal, Baby Jake, Deadly 60, The FA, Lulu Zipadoo, MasterChef, Mongrels and Walking with Dinosaurs 3D. On top of this, favourites such as Doctor Who, In the Night Garden, Charlie & Lola, Lonely Planet, Strictly Come Dancing, Top Gear, Wibbly Pig, ZingZillas and Only Fools and Horses will all be on the firm’s stand. “We’ve been a key part of BLE since its inception and this year we’re raring to go with a raft of new properties set for success,” explains Richard Hollis, BBC Worldwide’s head of UK licensing.
(Stand G100) Paris-based animation producer and distributor Alphanim will be showing Jim Henson’s pre-school hits Dinosaur Train and Sid the Science Kid, retro brand Fraggle Rock, plus lifestyle properties Skatelab and Psyclops. However, the firm’s highlight will be the re-launch of preschool series Calimero.

Aardman will be presenting a new style guide for Wallace & Gromit which celebrates the Best of British qualities of the brand ahead of the Olympics and Jubilee in 2012. In addition, the firm will be discussing new opportunities for partners and potential licensees for Shaun the Sheep and its spin-off sub-brand, Championsheeps. The firm’s main aim at BLE will be to present Worms and Gummy Bear. “These properties are enormous and, from a licensing perspective, their potential is absolutely huge,” says AT New Media’s Simon Kay. “We will also be looking to talk to interested parties about the range of opportunities that exist for the licensing sector within the digital space. We firmly believe that digital is the next big licensing medium.”

These will include Gogo’s Crazy Bones, Monkey, Goochicoo, Life, football brand Shoot, Build-aBear Workshop, Roobarb and Custard, Batfink, Roland Rat and Monster Jam.

Chapman Entertainment (Stand D015) New properties Raa Raa the Noisy Lion and Little Charley Bear will form a key part of Chapman’s presence. Over 15 partners are already on board for Raa Raa, while Little Charley Bear is being supported by the likes of Vivid, Penguin, Blues Clothing, MV Sports, Danilo, Zap and Worlds Apart to name just a few. In addition, the firm will be talking about the latest developments in the Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car programmes.
Classic Media (Stand D090) “BLE is a key show for us,” says Nicole Blake, EVP global marketing, consumer products. “It provides a great opportunity to create buzz and generate exposure around upcoming initiatives and to see what is on the horizon for the industry. It always proves to be an excellent event to meet with existing

Clive Juster & Associates (Stand B098) Mr Benn is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and will form a key part of Clive Juster’s presence at Brand Licensing Europe. Meanwhile, from the same creator – David McKee – Fandango features a mix of characters from the world of ballroom dancing, which the firm believes is perfect for a wide range of products. The company has also added Rupert Fawcett’s Fred and Daddy to its portfolio and will be exploring a number of categories.

Headlining Coolabi’s line-up will be Poppy Cat. Golden Bear is already on board as master toy partner, with a number of other key licensees secured ahead of the retail launch in autumn 2012. Social expression brand Purple Ronnie is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012, while the company will be looking to build on the success Scarlett & Crimson has already enjoyed in the cosmetics, gifting, stationery and apparel categories. Bagpuss and Clangers will complete Coolabi’s BLE line-up.
CPLG will update existing and potential licensees and retail partners on its work with a number of entertainment brands. Power Rangers has seen a resurgence with the arrival of Samurai in the UK in May. CPLG has been working with licensees including Parragon, Blues, Kinnerton and TDP Aykroyd. The Only Way is Essex is likely to be a major attraction, with the third series having just started. The firm will be looking to grow the programme which already includes Somerbond, FB Beauty, Fashion UK and The Beauty Works. Downton Abbey will also be on the stand. CPLG has inked a DTR which will see a host of products appearing in Past Times stores in time for Christmas. Other properties on the stand will include Care Bears, Where’s Wally? and Horrid Henry, which has enjoyed a resurgence of interest over the summer thanks to the success of the movie.
Cohen and Wilks (Stand G075) The apparel licensee will be displaying its baby and toddler Olympics line at the show. In addition to this, product from licences such as Disney, Ben & Holly, Tiny Tatty Teddy, Dr Who, The Gruffalo, JCB and Octonauts will also be on the stand.

Entertainment One (Stand G005) Peppa Pig, Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom, Humf and Twilight will be the focus for eOne at the show. The team will be using BLE as a platform to seek new licensing and promotional partners, to further develop the international potential of its portfolio and to build relations with new FMCG companies. “It’s been a fantastic year to be part of the eOne business,” says Andrew Carley, the firm’s global head of licensing. “The vision, hard work and determination of our retail and licensing partners, and the global eOne team have delivered quite incredible results. We’re excited to be returning to BLE.”
Fox Consumer Products (Stand E050) The world’s longest running scripted show, The Simpsons is about to celebrate its 500th episode, while Family Guy and Glee should also be strong attractions.
In terms of new films, the firm will be showcasing Alvin and the Chipmunks in Chipwrecked, Ice Age 4: Continental Drift and Leaf Men. In addition, FCP will showcase new properties including Prometheus, an original science fiction epic from Ridley Scott, and the Steven Spielberg produced Terra Nova, which is hitting TV screens in the autumn.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (Stand C050) New kids’ properties including 3D CGI pre-school animation Tree Fu Tom will be the stars of FME’s stand. The new show combines elements of heroic action, fantasy and physical interactivity, with FME targeting the toy, publishing and game categories. Other new properties on show will be boys’ animated action adventure Monsuno and My Babysitter’s A Vampire, a live action tween series. In addition to its kids’ portfolio, FME will also be pushing The X Factor, Idols, Rebecca Bonbon, The

Adventures of Merlin, Grand Designs, Celebrity Juice, Take Me Out and LA Ink among others. “FME have a fantastic portfolio of top global brands and we are excited to showcase our catalogue at this year’s BLE,” says Mark Newton, EVP licensing, Europe and emerging territories.

(Stand C085) It made its Brand Licensing Europe debut last year, and licensee Hakan Canta is returning in 2011 to showcase its wide range of product. The Istanbul-based company has licences for the likes of Barbie, Bakugan, Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, Tron and Hello Kitty, as well as sports brands such as Manchester United, the NBA and a variety of Turkish football clubs.
Hari’s World (Stand E122) The company will be looking to build on its existing agreements for the original book property which include
Hasbro is aiming to make a big statement at Olympia, promoting itself as a branded play company as it looks to be more front facing in the licensing business. As well as a good sized stand on the showfloor, Hasbro will also have a presence as visitors walk into Olympia, as well as a meeting room to talk licensees and retailers through its current plans. “We will be supporting our partners and making a real statement,” comments James Walker, VP EMEA. “We want to make retailers more aware of what we’re trying to do.” Key brands on the stand will be My Little Pony, Transformers, Nerf, Littlest Pet Shop and Battleship.

Hit Entertainment (Stand D025) The highlight of 2012 for Thomas & Friends will be the direct to DVD special, Blue Mountain Mystery. In the UK, this will be supported with a theatrical release across Vue cinemas, a West End VIP premiere, TV ads and retail promotions. Other recent developments with the brand – including plans for the animated film – will be shown at BLE. Meanwhile, Mike the Knight – Hit’s first new boys’ property since Bob the Builder – now has over 25 deals in place in the UK, covering most major categories. Product roll out is planned for Q3/Q4 2012. Other brands at the show will include Fireman Sam, Angelina Ballerina and Bob the Builder, which has just seen a new run of new CGI episodes begin on Cbeebies.
Hoho Entertainment (Stand C110) The production company set up by Helen Howells and Oliver Ellis will be making its show debut with a new series called Cloudbabies.
Already acquired by Cbeebies, the show focuses on four childlike characters – Baba Pink, Baba Blue, Baba Yellow and Baba Green – whose job it is to look after the sky and the Sun, Moon, Rainbow, Fuffa Cloud and Little Star. Hoho will be showcasing the brand to licensees and retailers with a view to signing partners in key categories post show.
Ideas at Work (Stand G060) Since its debut on CITV and ITV1 in June, Olly the Little White Van continues to grow in ratings. By August 7th, the series saw an increase of 233 per cent in viewers from its first episode. Entirely funded by private investors, over £3 million has been raised to develop and market the property, which is the first of several in the pipeline from Ideas at Work. Spring 2012 will see the arrival of the toy line from Hornby, while Ideas at Work also has ambitious plans for a smartphone app, plus a ‘dad and child’ targeted campaign among other activity.

(Stand F050) New brands on display from Lisle will be Almost Naked Animals – which features underwear clad animals which run a beachfront resort hotel called the Banana Cabana – plus Pampered Girls, which is a lifestyle fashion brand with over 60 global licensees on board so far. On top of this, the firm will also be showing how the ZhuZhu Pets property has developed from the original toy line.
Mattel Brands Consumer Products (Stand D100) After another impressive showing at Licensing International, Mattel returns to Olympia to highlight the latest licensing initiatives for its key brands. On the stand will be Barbie, Fisher-Price, Monster High, Battle Force 5, Scrabble, Max Steel, Uno, Hot Wheels and Polly Pocket to name just a few.
Mind Candy will be hoping to replicate the success it enjoyed in Las Vegas at Licensing International, when Moshi Monsters makes its BLE debut. Just in case you’ve been living on the moon, the virtual world has over 50 million registered users worldwide, half of all UK kids aged six to 12 have adopted a Moshi Monster and the site gets one new sign up every second from users spanning over 150 territories. In terms of licensing, the brand has toys (Vivid, Spin Master), books (Penguin), membership cards, Top Trumps (Winning Moves) and trading cards (Topps) among other merchandise, while the official magazine is the best selling kids title in the UK. Mind Candy anticipates that gross retail sales of Moshi Monsters related products will reach over $100m in the first year alone. Michael Acton Smith, creator and CEO, will be giving the keynote address at this year’s Licensing Academy, on Tuesday October 18th at 1pm.

(Stand A020/E065) Moonscoop will be previewing its new media initiatives and ongoing multi-platform VOD projects, including the already successful online game for Tara Duncan, plus a full 360-degree development for Code Lyoko. Further highlights of the firm’s slate will be Chloe’s Closet and Geronimo Stilton.
Nelvana Enterprises (Stand F070) It’s 80 years of Babar this year, and Nelvana is producing a further 26 episodes of the CG-animated series, Babar and the Adventures of Badou. Licensing agents in Europe include TF1 Licences in France, M4e in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and Bulls Press in Scandinavia. Almost 30 licensees are on board in France alone. Beyblade: Metal Masters will be a key focus, with the new season launching in Europe this autumn. Hasbro is the master toy partner and Nelvana has secured over 200 international licensing deals. A new style guide will also be on show for Franklin and Friends.
As you would expect, Nickelodeon Consumer Products will be presenting a packed portfolio – ranging from evergreen properties such as Dora the Explorer and Spongebob Squarepants, through to its hit teen/tween live action shows Victorious and Big Time Rush. New girls’ addition Winx Club will also be highlighted, but the biggest draw, potentially, is likely to be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which the firm is rebooting for launch in 2013.
Rocket Licensing (Stand F005)
Power Rangers Samurai continues to build momentum and now boasts over 100 licensees including Bandai, Mega Brands, Basic Fun and Blip Toys. In addition, Saban is aiming to build the Paul Frank brand even further. New product categories, retail stores and content initiatives including a first foray into television with a prime-time Christmas special are all planned. Currently, Paul Frank is represented by a roster of global licensing agents, which manage over 120 licensees worldwide.
Sanrio (Stand B030)
Always a busy stand at the show, Rocket will be looking to have another packed schedule this year, displaying a diverse range of properties from Dr Seuss, Scalextric and Airfix, through to Bruce Lee, Atari and Rocky. In addition, the firm also has Mrs Brown’s Boys and Princess Pearl, plus upcoming DreamWorks films Real Steel, Madagascar 3 and Puss in Boots.

Sanrio will be joining forces with a number of fashion, streetwear, cosmetics, hi-tech and toy brands. From Liberty Art Fabrics, Momiji and Hydrogen to Swarovski, Chupa Chups and Forfex, the Sanrio characters have been featured on several new co-branding projects due to be introduced in 2012, including a hard rock collaboration. As well as the special projects, Sanrio will continue to develop
products for Hello Kitty, Keroppi, Badtz Maru, My Melody and The Little Twin Stars among other properties, while a series of special charity collaborations for the Sanrio Foundation will also be launched.
Start Licensing (Stand G050) Start is working with Unilever on the Peperami, Pot Noodle, Bovril and Slim-Fast brands, with new style guide materials available for licensees to review at the show. The firm will also be showcasing a range of licensed products it has developed using the Britvic brands Robinson’s, Fruit Shoot and Tango, including confectionery and apparel. Start will be near its client DC Thomson and is aiming to highlight new art and products from The Beano and The Dandy, focusing on the Dennis & Gnasher animation. In addition, the company will be showing Party Paws, a greetings card brand featuring Bamboo, which has sold over three million units since launch. Other properties on the stand will include Bang on the Door, Pam Ayres, Jacqueline Wilson and Big & Small. Ian Downes, Start’s MD, says: “We feel we have a great portfolio

that is well balanced and presents licensees and retailers with well defined commercial opportunities. We are looking forward to using the show to meet with new and existing partners. We want to make deals on the stand and are happy to close deals at the show. We are there to do business.”
TLC – Entertainment (Stand D035) Understandably, Star Wars will be a key focus for TLC. The most successful film series of all time will line up alongside The Gruffalo, The Adventures of Tintin and The Smurfs in TLC’s portfolio.
Turner CN Enterprises (Stand E040) With the company well established in the boys’ sector, TCNE will also be showing the licensing opportunities available as it moves into the pre-school and girls’ sectors. The firm is working with third party publishers on Zoobles, Bananas in Pyjamas, Puppy in my Pocket and Jelly Jamm, with more properties in the pipeline.

New brands for six to 12 year olds – with an emphasis on comedy and interactive – will also be highlighted, as well as a move into the teen and adult licensing worlds using its retro brands and channel identities, such as CNN. “As an EMEA licensing division, BLE is the must attend event in our licensing calendar,” says Alan Fenwick, VP of TCNE. “Over the course of the three-day event we will be celebrating the achievements of our partners who have helped us to secure record growth for four consecutive years, which is no mean feat given the current economic climate. We’ll also be using the show to talk about our most diverse portfolio of brands.”
Universal Partnerships & Licensing (Stand A030) Leading the UP&L line-up will be 2013’s Despicable Me 2, while Snow White and the Huntsman (due to hit cinemas next summer) will also be showcased. Other titles being highlighted on the stand will include 3D fantasy adventure 47 Ronin (2012) and Fast & Furious 6 (summer 2013).
V&S Entertainment (Stand C030) Another BLE newcomer, V&S will be showcasing its hit pre-school property Everything’s Rosie. Over 20 licensees are on board across key categories including Vivid, Blues Clothing, Roy Lowe & Sons, TDP Aykroyds, Vogue, Worlds Apart, Egmont and Zap. The licensing programme has also recently been extended to Spain. “We are very excited about presenting Everything’s Rosie at BLE,” says Julie Quirke, the firm’s director of licensing. “The show is proving to be a big hit with preschoolers, who love the characters and storylines, and the licensing community has been quick to recognise this. We want to extend what is a rapidly expanding programme and will be looking to talk to new partners across a wide range of sectors.”
Withit (Stand C080) This year, Withit will be celebrating its ten-year anniversary in the licensing business.
Some 16 Withit characters will be on display at BLE – including Cheeky, Glamour Puss and Mad Cow - seen in new poses with new artwork showing an international flavour. In addition, the firm will be showing Doodleboos, an artwork programme aimed at toddlers and young mothers, while The Booists features dark humour and is primarily aimed at teenage boys. Withit will also be looking to meet with new agents across the world in markets it is not yet present in.
Zodiak Rights (Stand F030) The company will be looking to build on its strong showing from Licensing International in Las Vegas. Key properties on the stand will include Waybuloo - which has just revealed a new spin off version, including narrative from Dave Lamb (the voice of Come Dine With Me). Cbeebies is the first broadcaster to pick up the show. Redakai, Little Princess, Gormiti, Totally Spies, Mister Maker, Yo Gabba Gabba, Simon's Cat and Mr Bean are also on the stand.

(Stand C072) Allsorts arrives at Olympia armed with an array of brands. New creative iBoop: Betty’s Play List and Popeye’s Tattoo Parlour will bolster both classic brands, with Betty’s Play List featuring 12 distinctive designs based on the hottest musical genres of the past 60 years. Meanwhile, the recent deal with Kerrygold to use Olive Oyl has helped boost the profile of the character, with print ads appearing in a spread of national newspapers and in consumer magazines. Apparel also continues to be a strong category for the classic brands, with solid orders for the third and fourth quarters, while Hagar and Flash Gordon offer specific opportunities in men’s product, particularly aimed at Father’s Day. Pre-school publishing brand Miss Dolly has launched in the UK from Autumn Publishing. There are eight books and Allsorts is looking to build the property into other categories. Finally, Yoga Cats and Dogs has proved something of breakout brand in the last 12 months, with seven partners now in place in the UK.
(Stand D050) CPLGS is bringing a mammoth portfolio of sporting brands to BLE. The firm has just renewed its representation agreement with the Rugby Football Union beyond the 2015 Rugby World Cup, while, staying with rugby, it also handles the Engage Super League. In terms of football, both Fulham and West Ham United are on the firm’s books, while the programme for St Andrews Links has been steadily growing with some high quality partners now on board. CPLGS also represents the World Rally Championship, the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team, French Football Federation, UK Sport, Scotland Football and the Fédération Equestre Internationale.
(Stand G095) DCD’s music merchandising division has grown significantly to represent most major music publishers and giving licensees access to over seven million songs. Play That Tune, a board game from Imagination Games includes songs from EMI Publishing, while there is also an Abbey Road board game which was exclusively launched in Tesco. New musical keyrings featuring songs from the Lennon/McCartney catalogue have also launched in Sainsbury’s and Debenhams. Puppy Love also continues to strengthen. Licensing for Suzy’s Zoo is just kicking off in the UK, while DCD is also looking to build up the profile of Japanese Sushi chef, Yuki Gomi.

(Stand C070) Action adventure stars and classic British films will make up CLC’s stand. 2011 marks the 20th anniversary of Terminator 2: Judgement Day and CLC will be highlighting product from several new licensees, while Kurt Russell’s hero – Snake Plissken – from Escape From New York is being licensed for the first time. Rambo will complete the action hero presence. Meanwhile, CLC will also be presenting a number of classic British movies including the original 1965 motion picture, Dr Who and the Daleks, plus Ealing Classics such as The Lady Killers.
(Stand F115) EPE will showcase its signature Elvis products from 2011 including Mr Potato Head, Elvis Warhol electronic skins, Zippo lighters and the new Elvis Mattel Gold Lame doll. It will also feature its 2012 campaign which commemorates the 35th anniversary of Elvis’ legacy.
Beanstalk (Stand D055) The firm is anticipating significant interest in Talking Friends, the digital app which has notched up over 150 million downloads of its characters including Talking Tom Cat and Talking Ben. Meanwhile, Beanstalk is aiming to grow in the corporate brands area.

Glow Europe (Stand D060) Glow is looking to build its Bumpeez collectable line into a licensed property and is seeking a UK agent to help sign up the right partners and build the brand. Having hit retail back in August, the firm says that 50
million Bumpeez are forecast to be sold over the next three years. On top of this, Glow will also be using the show to further develop its licensed promotional loyalty scheme business.
Hallmark (Stand G010) Forever Friends is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2012 and Hallmark is planning a substantial marketing campaign which will run throughout 2012 and 2013. UK licensing sales for Forever Friends have grown by an impressive 80 per cent over the last three years. A new vintage style guide will also be showcased. Hallmark will also be displaying Emily Button, with new licensees for nightwear and toiletries due to launch products exclusively in a major High Street retailer this October.
Ignition (Stand C100) Ignition will be launching three new brands at Brand Licensing Europe: Tracey Russell Designs hand embellished greetings art; Jessie Steele, a market leader in fashionable aprons in the US; and Izak Zenou, a fashion designer turned illustrator. In addition to the new launches, focus will also be on greetings card brand Marzipan – with Ignition looking to announce new deals for plush and kids’ kitchen textiles – and Juicy Lucy, which will have a new ‘look book’.

(Stand D040) ITV will be highlighting the growth of its Alan Titchmarsh licensing drive, seeking new opportunities in gardening and outdoor categories. Meanwhile, following on from the 50th anniversary celebrations, 2011 has seen the Coronation Street brand move into flowers and fresh food. Next year, the brand plan is to focus on the themes of experience, heritage and origins. Come Dine with Me offers a unique ‘DIY’ dinner party experience, perfect for party and dining related products and promotions, while ITV will be looking to extend quiz show, Red or Black.
(Stand E010) JELC comes to the show with a varied portfolio which covers everything from extreme sports and cheeky seaside humour through to a new girls’ brand and make-up. UFC will line up with the Bamforth Collection, Grumpy Old Gits, Barry M, Gem Fairies, Plain Lazy and the RSPCA.
JCB (Stand F028) The My 1st JCB pre-school brand continues to go from strength to strength with new characters, categories and licensees. Dan Dozer will be unveiled, while JCB will also be keen to show off the latest product range extensions including the My 1st JCB app. JCB Boys targets the four to eight demographic with a focus on real JCB machines in real environments. A new style guide and assets have been created to support the drive on the older boys range, with master toy licensee HTI leading the push. Finally, B&Q’s range of over 100 hand, power and garden tools will be highlighted, alongside other recent extensions including the JCB Toughphone range and a new workwear range.

Muhammad Ali Enterprises (Stand F115) MAE’s Ali70 campaign is in celebration of the icon’s 70th birthday in 2012. Respect, confidence, conviction, dedication, giving and spirituality are values which the firm believes resonate with consumers worldwide, and will be using the show to convince licensees too.
Performance Brands (Stand E055) Key focuses for the firm will be Oxford Limited, The Scout Association UK and Ford Motor Company. Performance Brands will also be fielding meetings for its clients Nintendo, BMW, Aston Martin and Silver Cross among others.
Pink Key Consulting (Stand E150) Pink Key is the European agent for the Kellogg’s Vintage Collection, and the programme continues to grow with listings across the region for apparel, including in Urban Outfitters, Top Man and Zara.
The firm is expecting to sign a number of other apparel and accessories deals in the coming months, with listings expected via licensees TDP Textiles, Fipotex and Sunset International. Pink Key has also secured panEuropean deals for glass and metal housewares with the Shang Hai Huge Scents Company, plus a gifting licence with Nostalgic Arts. Launching in 2012 will be Vintage Kellogg under the Royal Worcester and Pimpernel brands from new partner, Portmerion.
Royal Navy/RAF (Stand F100) This year’s show sees the launch of a new style guide for the Royal Navy, which highlights the three key brands – Royal Navy, Royal Marines and HM Armed Forces. It covers the likes of uniforms, badges, historical documents, photographs, ship names, locations, phrases, slang and subject matter, while also showing how these can be brought to life on a variety of products. Meanwhile, HM Armed Forces has been developed as a bespoke kids’ brand of all three services. This year has seen the launch of a new range of construction figures and vehicles. Finally, Citizen launched the Red Arrows Eco Drive watch collection last autumn and sales have been so strong that the range has been picked up by British Airways retail and Virgin Atlantic. Citizen is currently working on a special limited edition watch and cufflink set.
Sega (Stand B010) Sega will be continuing the 20th anniversary celebrations for Sonic the Hedgehog, with visitors to the stand getting the chance to preview the upcoming game, Sonic Generations. As well as video games, Sonic has also enjoyed success in areas including comics, apparel and toys, plus there has also been a TV animation. Sega is looking to grow the licensing programme further and is keen to discuss a range of international opportunities in publishing, apparel and collectables among other areas.
Smiley Company (Stand B005) Smiley will be opening its first store in London this winter, in the Boxpark mini-mall in Shoreditch. It will also launch its own e-commerce site. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Smiley and a yearlong campaign will encompass art expos, music festivals and fashion collaborations. In addition, a range of extreme sports equipment and watches will launch.
TLC – Brand (Stand D035) From its Brands division, TLC will be showcasing recent activity with the Jeep, Coca-Cola Licensing, Skechers, Jelly Belly and Reckitt Benckiser’s properties. Highlights will include the launch of a CocaCola co-branded Olympic merchandise collection.

(Stand F81) The newcomer will be showcasing its range of I’m Going to… designs, plus the photographic led I Can Spot… line of designs. In addition, it will be launching a new range aimed at the teen gift market – the How to… for the domestically inept. The set of instructions are laid out in the style of airline safety guidelines, with titles including How to… make a cup of coffee, How to… do the laundry, How to… clean the bathroom floor and How to… clean the loo among others.
(Stand A110) The winner of last year’s License This, Animaru is a range of characters with four years success in the greetings card market under its belt already. There are over 200 characters in the range. The firm will be particularly eyeing up the stationery/paper goods, apparel and toys and games sectors.
(Stand D135) Design-led brand Fatina Dreams will see its first products – from licensees including Gemma International and New Editions – hitting stores in spring 2012. A new interactive ebook telling a Fatina story was also released this year. The property has also been involved with a number of high profile collaborations due to its green message, with brands including Clinique, Samsung, Stella McCartney, Estee Lauder, Smart Car, Sony, Camper, Hong Kong International Airport, Miss Sixty and Greenpeace. The firm will be seeking further partners in the apparel, accessories, homewares, publishing, digital media and cosmetics sectors among others at the show.
4sight Licensing Solutions (Stand D070) Fashion property Chicaloca and Pachanga will form a key part of the 4sight presence. The licensing programmes for both have been steadily growing and the firm is looking forward to showcasing the growth to the industry and potential partners. In addition, popular animal photography franchise Artlist Collection: The Dog and Friends – including The Dog, The Cat, The Pig, The Duck, The Rabbit and The Hamster – will also be on display.
Bespoke Creative (Stand D122) Featuring imagery from the Conde Naste Archives – Vogue, Brides and The New Yorker – Bespoke Creative is looking to develop further partnerships in the mid to high-end market. Current licensees include teNeues for Vogue stationery and calendars, t-shirts from Zara featuring classic covers from The New Yorker and, most recently, a greetings cards and gift line featuring the cartoons with UK Greetings. The firm will also be presenting Trunk Archive, the creative image licensing agent from New York representing a number of big names in fashion photography. It will be the first time that many of the photographers have been available for licensing.

CopCorp Licensing (Stand C010) The US-based agency will be showing a range of brands including children’s art property from Japan Barcode Kitties; Jim Benton’s It’s Happy Bunny; fashion brand Pink Cookie, (not so) Scary Monsters; plus photography from the Tom Arma Studio and The Greatest Show on Earth.
In addition, it will be debuting three new properties: Zoodorable, The Art of Dienzo and Fiona & the Funky Pirates.
DRi Licensing (Stand C015) New from Caroline Gardner this autumn are stationery and home fragrances, while spring will welcome two new homewares collections: Royal Worcester’s range of bone china boxed mugs and Cooksmart’s premium kitchen utensils line. New ranges have also boosted Edward Monkton, with DMD’s kitchen ceramics line being nominated for a Licensing Award. Cooksmart’s initial products have had a good reaction, with lunch bags and travel mugs following in spring. Giles Andreae’s new children’s publishing creation World of Happy was launched by Egmont in the spring, with Rainbow Designs signing up as plush partner. Also on the stand will be classic properties Miffy and Boofle, plus Madeleine Floyd’s Birdsong and new property One Big Element, which is aiming to give a humorous and fashionable take on the periodic table.

(Stand E125) Combining graffiti and pop art, new Reilly artwork is being developed every season and new partners are continuously coming on board, certainly making it one to watch at the show. MGL will also be displaying Valentina Ramos – with a new line of products planned to launch worldwide in 2012 featuring the bright, colourful images – plus Best Furry Friends by Greg Cuddiford. Back to school ranges have already been secured. Elsewhere on the stand, MGL will highlight Hot Foot, which is aimed at the eight to 12 year-old boys market; Marsh Mellow, featuring bold, bright, funky animals and plantlife; and Extreme Zombies.
(Stand F132) Another newcomer to BLE, Okada Design will be presenting a collection of patterns which it believes can be used for home furnishings, accessories and stationery. In addition, owner Cecilie Okada has also created a property called Lilly Fairies.

(Stand G055) DC Thomson returns to Olympia with some ambitious plans. The publisher of newspapers, magazines and books already has a healthy licensing programme for The Beano and The Dandy, thanks to its work with Start Licensing. The firms other magazine brands include Shout, Commando and The People’s Friend, which will be lining up alongside characters such as Dennis and Gnasher, Desperate Dan, Bananaman, The Broons and Oor Wullie.
(Stand F008) Walker Books publishes awardwinning authors, illustrators and brands including Anthony Horowitz, Lucy Cousins, Polly Dunbar and Where’s Wally? The licensing division manages brands including Maisy and all other Lucy Cousins properties, Guess How Much I Love You and Tilly and Friends. Meanwhile, Walker Productions develops content for other media platforms with a range of media partners. Current projects include Tilly and Friends for BBC and Fleabag Monkeyface for ITV. Guide to the Licensing World (Stand H035) The Guide to the Licensing World is a comprehensive international printed directory available on the brand and character licensing and merchandising industry. The 600-page book references over 27,000 properties, characters, films, personalities, brands and trademarks, with over 1,900 licensing agents in more than 80 countries worldwide. It also lists licensees, specialist services, trade publications and trade show calendars. The online version is updated throughout the year.
Wiley (Stand E015) Founded in 1807, John Wiley & Sons aims to provide content and services to ‘lifelong learners’ worldwide. Wiley’s portfolio includes For Dummies, Cliff Notes, Frommer’s and How to Cook Everything. The brands are available for licensing in categories including consumer electronics, DVD and video games, apparel, accessories, gifts, housewares, sporting goods, toys and games.

The firm claims to ensure full revenue recognition for all its clients, and has recovered significant amounts for UK and global brands. Counterpoint Systems (Stand F003) Counterpoint’s software solutions help companies manage their licensing deals and administer the licensing royalties. The firm provides the software to help companies save time and money with their deal management, reduce the risk of revenue or expense leakage with licensing royalties and build better relationships with their partners.
Dependable Solutions (Stand G023) Dependable Solutions is a provider of licensing systems to licensors, agents and licensees. Its flagship software is Dependable Rights Manager, which allows companies to streamline, simplify and
accelerate their licensing and product approvals processes, manage their rights and contracts, track royalties, generate invoices and more using just a web browser.
LIMA UK (Stand A095) The trade body is inviting members and non-members to join Kelvyn Gardner and Saphia Maxamed on the LIMA stand to discuss latest trends and industry news. Also visiting the show will be a number of execs from the LIMA US team including president Charles Riotto; SVP membership and new business development, Adam Berg; and Marty Brochstein, SVP industry relations and information. Over the past year, LIMA UK membership has increased by 30 per cent. Among the advantages the team will be keen to point out is the ten per cent reduction on the cost of exhibiting at BLE. Members can also take advantage of the stand as a place to host meetings. In addition, LIMA will be holding a networking reception on the second night of the show – October 19th – at The Bentley Hotel from 6pm to 7.30pm. These properties can all work on a wide range of products, plus there’s the added bonus of helping to raise funds for some deserving causes... Battersea Dogs & Cats Home (Stand F145) Last year, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home looked after nearly 10,000 stray, abandoned or unwanted dogs and cats, with an average of 17 dogs and seven cats arriving every single day. In 2010, it cost over £11.8 million to run and care for the animals living in Battersea’s centres in South London, Brands Hatch and Old Windsor. Therefore, the Home has decided to maximise its brand potential to raise funds through licensing, with its first partner being MPL, which has a licence for dog beds. At BLE, the Home will have examples of its imagery and illustrations of cats and dogs available for licensing, as well as a visit from a Battersea resident.
Historic Royal Palaces Enterprises (Stand B088) Historic Royal Palaces looks after five palaces: the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace. Licensees also have access to the collections and gardens to help create a unique product range.
Imperial War Museum (Stand B068) With collections of thousands of paintings and drawings, posters and photographs, plus hours of film, the Imperial War Museum can tell
powerful and extraordinary stories of people, places, ideas and history. In 2014, the museum will be leading the commemorations of the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1.
Natural History Museum (Stand B105) London’s Natural History Museum is visited by over four million people annually. With over 70 million specimens, the world’s largest collection of natural history artwork and over 50,000 images, licensees are almost spoilt for choice. Currently, there are more than 30 partners on board, with products sold through key High Street retailers and most grocers. At the show, the firm will be displaying some of its product, demonstrating how the brand encompasses mammals, marine life, flora and fauna, insects, volcanoes and minerals, as well as dinosaurs.
NMSI (Stand B045) NMSI Enterprises will be releasing new artwork and product designs for all three of its brands. A new Science Museum brand will be launching this autumn/winter with an updated packaging style for core toys and gadgets. Products will be showcased from new signings NPW in stationery and design-led wall stickers from Binary Box.

A new brand identity will also be shown for National Railway Museum for the first time. The firm has been working with Michelle Mason – noted for her 1950s retro styles – to come up with variations on its posters, while her tea towels and mugs will be on the stand. NMSI will also have a ‘Best of British’ section. Finally, new artwork will be shown for the Flying Scotsman, working in parallel to the existing style guide. The brand has enjoyed a good year so far, with an official DVD launching with exclusive versions for M&S and WH Smith, plus the launch of Flying Scotsman beer in partnership with Caledonian.
Royal Horticultural Society Enterprises (Stand B070) The Royal Horticultural Society is the world’s leading gardening charity. Since it was founded in 1804, the RHS has been commissioning and collecting the best in botanical art, resulting in a collection of over 23,000 original artworks. The floral and fruit artworks are particularly successful on home, gift, decorative and stationery products.
RSPCA (Stand E010) Making its first appearance at BLE – as part of the JELC stand – the RSPCA is looking to build on its strong brand awareness and expand further into licensing.
Visitors to the stand will be able to hear more about the new style guide, as well as the RSPCA’s investment in licensing literature, support and promotion. Partners already on board include Aurora for plush animals, BrownTrout Publishers for 2012 calendars and diaries, plus Happy Pet for dog toys and grooming products. New product launches from CP Designs Asia, Rayware, UK Greetings, John Lewis and the Noel Tatt Group are also coming up. Together with JELC, the firm is now eyeing up areas including apparel, giftware, housewares, stationery, publishing, pet food, wild animal food and pet accessories.
V&A Licensing (Stand B020) The V&A archives and brand are licensed to over 80 licensees, spanning Europe, US and the Far East. Key product categories include home furnishings, apparel, jewellery, accessories, stationery and gifts. In March 2012, to coincide with the London Olympics, the V&A will stage the British Design 1948-2012 exhibition; the first to celebrate Postwar British art and design. The theme will offer a unique opportunity for licensing designs, some of which have previously never been displayed. In particular, the textiles from the 50s, 60s and 70s have strong commercial potential.
