Biggest ever show is drawing more diverse attendees Integrated Systems Europe 2011 will comfortably draw more than 30,000 visitors, predicts show organiser Integrated Systems Events. As of yesterday morning, preregistrations stood at 28,770 – already exceeding last year’s total attendance of 28,489. Speaking on the eve of the show to The ISE Daily, Integrated Systems Events managing director Mike Blackman speculated that this could lead to an overall visitor figure as high as 35,000. Net stand space is up 17% this year to 26,650sqm, boosted in part by more than 150 new exhibitors. “This year we’ve seen a lot of new exhibitors from China promoting their own developments, said Blackman. Key growth areas on the showfloor this year include IP solutions, pro audio (“growing substantially, said

Forward to the future Ever-increasing pressure on RF spectrum, AV industry standardisation and the arrival of Building Information Modelling (BIM) were among the topics under discussion during InfoComm’s Future Trends Summit yesterday. A new event for ISE, Future Trends – as its name might suggest – aimed to highlight the technological and business developments set to shape the pro-AV landscape over the next few years. Two speakers from InfoComm itself initiated the day’s proceedings. Following a brief scene-setting in-

troduction from senior VP international development Terry Friesenborg, VP of standards and best practice Joseph Bocchiaro took the floor to discuss the organisation’s involvement in pro-AV standardisation. While still in its relative infancy, the InfoComm programme has already yielded two published standards – Audio Coverage Uniformity in Enclosed Listener Areas (ANSI/INFOCOMM 1M-2009) and Standard Guide for

With over 120 delegates registered at the Digital SIgnage Conference, there can be little doubting the growing significance of digital signage to the AV industry. An implicit theme of the opening presentations at DiSCOyesterday was the fragmentation in what is still a relatively immature market – relative, that is, to AV industry staples such as presentations, videoconferencing, home automation and education. The opening presentation from Andrew Wood of Al Barq focused on the opportunity presented by the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) market. “Advertising budgets are back in a big way, he said – something which many in the industry can only dream of. Mobile DooH is very significant, he said.

Lars Peters of ECE flatmedia reviewed the opportunity presented specifically by shopping malls, of which his company will serve 52 by the end of this year with more than 1,000 screens. “DooH is still not top of mind for most agencies, he said. “Beyond that, we are a new industry and we still have to prove to them that what we offer really works. For David Dalzell of ONELAN, fragmentation exists in the types of digital signage network that are characterised by variations in size and diversity. He described the opportunity he saw for the industry in substantially reducing the cost of very large networks by re-engineering existing DLNA TVs to be network-

ISE is expecting 330 registered visitors from the media – an increase of 22% on 2010

ISE broadens links with associations

One of the defining features of this year’s ISE show is the increased level of participation from numerous industry associations. On stand 9F129, the KNX Association has demonstrations of technology from 26 manufacturers that use the KNX home automation and building control standard. The association is also presenting seminars in the ISE Theatre. The Institute of Sound and Communications Engineers is making its debut on the ISE showfloor this year. “ISCE came to us and said, ‘A lot of our members are coming to the show and asking us why we’re not there.’ So they’ve taken a stand and are looking to broaden their European reach,” explained ISE’s Mike Blackman. Another organisation with a strong presence is AVnu Alliance – a manufacturers’ association promoting the emerging IEEE standards for audio-video bridging over internet.

Inside

Change and change again The pace of change in visual communications is accelerating – but for the first time in many years, developments are being led by business as opposed to technology. That was the opening gambit of Wainhouse Research co-founder Andrew Davis’s scene-setting presentation at yesterday’s Visual Communications Summit, which has come to ISE for the first time this year. In a fast-paced address, Davis alluded to enduring consumer confusion about the terms ‘videoconferencing’ and ‘telepresence’, and considered the implications for the market of changing business practices informed by economic and social factors. New users of visual communications technology – dubbed ‘millennials’ – look set to have a particularly

create a sensation

dramatic impact. There will, said Davis, be a shift from ‘group’ to ‘personal’ VC solutions, while it is possible that many users will wish to make use of video within a social media framework. The overriding implication was that this remains a very unpredictable market – hence Davis’s entreaty to keep a close eye on “the unforeseen… Those sudden shifts that change the way people do business.” But the focus wasn’t purely on business expectations, as Davis also highlighted several technological factors set to exert an influence on the market through 2011-12, including scalable video coding and 3D. Look out for more coverage of the Visual Communications Summit in tomorrow’s edition of The ISE Daily.

When we add all the display companies, such as Sharp and LG, who are not in that area, then there’s no comparison.” Much of the growth in attendance has come from companies sending more people to the show: while originally senior managers predominated, increased atten-

dance by engineer-level employees has boosted numbers over the years. This in turn has driven a growing education programme at ISE, which this year sees InfoComm CTS and CEDIA EST examinations carried out on site during the show. In addition, commercial end users and specifiers are more strongly represented than ever. This is due in part to hosted buyer programmes that bring potential buyers to the show who may not otherwise be able to travel here. “The growth we’ve had has been phenomenal,” concluded Blackman. “I say this every year, but this is going to be our most exciting show so far.”

Sunfire

The big bang theory If you thought building a subwoofer just meant putting a beefy speaker or two into a wooden box, Sunfire MD Mark Weisenberg will soon convince you otherwise. “Sunfire is in the business of delivering power,” he announced. “Our subwoofer speakers and amplifiers deliver high power, high fidelity and high reliability.” The product that best demonstrates the point is the new Atmos subwoofer. Powered by an internally mounted 1.4kW digital amplifier, it is loaded with a custom-designed and built 6.5in driver in a cabinet ap-

proximately 23cm square. (You may care to read that sentence again.) “The cone excursion is 1.8in [46mm],” Weisenberg reveals. “It creates such a high internal pressure – 24psi – that the cabinet had to be fabricated from extruded aluminium, and specially designed feet are required to prevent the cabinet from ‘walking’.” Stand: IL90

KNX on show at ISE This year, 26 KNX members are exhibiting at ISE. The latest KNX applications include not just LED and WLAN control, but also operation of the full range of KNX technology via iPad, iPhone and iPod. KNX members are presenting eight innovative KNX applications at the stand. The number of KNX manufacturers has doubled in the last two years, giving a total of almost 220 KNX members from 30 countries, with many from countries outside Europe – and particularly Asia. The number of ETS licences held and the number of active KNX partners have also doubled in the same time. Factors in favour of its continued growth as a worldwide standard include the introduction of KNX IP and the new KNX specification 2.0. Stand: 9F129

Q&A

Tim Brooksbank, CEO Calibre UK Ltd

Has ISE come at a good time for the systems integration industry? ISE has come when it always comes each year, it is a good time for the show because it doesn’t clash with other important events for our industry. There is often a lack of joined-up thinking between show organisers who don’t consider whether it is realistic for exhibitors or attendees to visit their show on the dates they choose. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector? Key developments are the emergence of LED and laserilluminated projectors. A key distraction is 3D – it’s driven by consumer demand for what they think they ought to have, but really is a retrograde step in terms of

picture quality. Key threats are the influx of cheap products which appear on their datasheets to be good but in practice you get what you pay for, although a surprising number of customers don’t recognise this until it is too late. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? We have some interesting demonstrations of image warping and blending for creative projection, 3D projection alignment and for tiling multiple projectors to produce large bright images. We’ve also got new models of video scalers, which offer class leading performance at a price point much lower than before, so that those on a tight budget don’t need to settle for a lower quality alternative. Sound with vision Today, the company is showcasing a range of forward-looking products, including the Procise audio processing product range, featuring the PSPHD high definition 7.3 surround sound audio processor. The Prodigy range of home control products, designed for easy install and operation, is also be in the spotlight, as is the Crestron DigitalMedia 8G technology, which can deliver ‘ultrahigh speed’and long distance transmission of all data, Ethernet and control, as well as analogue and digital AV signals. Other innovations include the 24X8 multi-room audio system with built-in Sonnex audio transport technology, which blends high-

performance digital audio processing, full-matrix switching and high-powered amplification into a single component. The GLPAC-DIMFLV Integrated Lighting System – offering standalone lighting control for classroms, conference rooms and offices – will make its European debut, while the V-Panels ultra-slim, low profile, high definition touch-panels are also on display. It’s a wireless world Panasonic

ISE this year sees Panasonic Marketing Europe introduce two new LCD projectors. Set for May delivery, the PTFW430 and PT-FX400 with optional ET-WM200 wireless module will allow wireless projection through an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. This is achieved using a free application, Panasonic Wireless Projector, which allows images and files to be opened on the touch screen and displayed by the projector without a PC or a VGA cable. The two new models also feature a new dust-resistant ‘Eco filter’, which removes dust from the cooling air, and also LCD panels that reduce image deterioration to maintain high image quality.

“There’s been a surge of connected devices coming onto the market over the past year, and we are addressing the changing industry demands by making our products even easier to work with across any device,” said Christian Sokcevic, general manager sales & marketing for Panasonic Broadcast and Projectors. “From exhibitions to conference environments, the flexible and reliable nature of these projectors makes it easy to use them in any location. The eco-design of these models also greatly reduces environmental impact.” The PT-FW430 has a resolution of WXGA (1,280 x 800) and 3,500 lumens of brightness, while the PT-FX400 offers XGA (1,024 x 768) resolution and 4,000 lumens of brightness. Vivitek Corporation

Projector converts 2D Vivitek has introduced what is said to be 2D-to-3D conversion technology, with three digital projectors, the D512-3D, D536-3D and the D538-3D. The new projectors are designed to convert images into 3D without the use of an external conversion box. The first projectors to use this built-in conversion technology take standard DVD and Blu-ray player content via HDMI and switch it from 2D to 3D via DLP Link from Texas Instruments. The three projectors can also display 3D content from 720p/1080i at 50/60Hz and 1080p at 24Hz from Blu-ray players or other 3D sources, such as cable or satellite boxes. The three models feature DLP and BrilliantColor technologies for bright, digital images, says the manufacturer. Add in high-efficiency lamps that last up to 4,000 hours in economy mode,

and the three projectors are ‘an amazing lightweight, presentation solution,’ Vivitek claims. “This latest technology represents a breakthrough for both the consumer and Vivitek, said Holger Graeff, general manager EMEA at Vivitek. “We’ve packed a lot of features and technologies into the D512-3D, D536-3D and D538-3D projectors, all within a compact design. “Now, with the 2D to 3D built-in conversion, consumers are able to enjoy 3D content without needing to purchase or set up an external box, Graeff added. “These projectors offer great image quality, a variety of connections for multiple video sources, and they are 3D-ready to ensure next generation content can be enjoyed now. The projectors are set to be available from May this year. We ask: Will 3D see the most success in the world of entertainment, or in other areas?

“The growth of 3D in the consumer entertainment market will be huge going forward, led by gaming, television and film. This will fuel the growth of other applications such as public visitor attractions and many others.” Anders Løkke, international marketing and communications manager, projectiondesign “3D has exploded within the entertainment sector – from the flurry of TV manufacturers producing 3D screens to Avatar ranking as

the highest-grossing film of all time. It has clearly left a mark on the consumer industry but the impact is also being felt in the professional market. “Any environment that would benefit from more ‘real’ simulations or an immersive experience will start to demand more 3D technology over the coming years. This could include the boardroom, medical environments, event companies and architects who need to produce life-like visualisations.” Julian Rutland, visual communication product and solutions director, Canon Europe

Runco projectors for 3D in the home Today Runco launches its range of residential projectors that use passive glasses to deliver a quality of 3D image said to be superior to that seen in commercial cinemas to date. ”The 3D-at-home revolution is an exciting development for display companies and for 3D enthusiasts, and – as people would expect – Runco is committed to delivering an exceptional solution like no other,” said Jennifer Davis, the company’s VP of marketing. “Runco approached 3D from both a physiological and technological perspective and the result is better than any 3D TV or 3D projection experience being sold today,” Davis claimed. “Runco’s 3Dimension solution produces an incomparable 3D experience in home cinemas that surpasses the public-cinema experience.” Room: E102

Ian McMurray asks if HD obsoletes standard definition over time, does 3D become the ubiquitous delivery medium of the future?

3D – a future so bright, we’ve all got to wear dark glasses? hen Sky launched its 3D TV channel in the UK in October last year, it marked another major milestone in what many believe – or hope – will be the future of television. The advent of 3D movies such as Avatar has certainly breathed new life into cinemas. But is 3D purely a consumer technology – or is it something that ISE attendees should be tracking carefully? “3D is great for visualisation of product designs, architecture, medical imaging, scientific modelling, radar/sonar, mapping, education and so on,” says Richard Cobbold, chairman of The Screen. Other commentators note similar opportunities. But what of the mainstream? “Probably the largest volume opportunity for commercial 3D is in the education sector,” says Mike Fisher of Futuresource. “By utilising 3D, schools are able to engage and explain certain content to students in a more compelling way – for example, when demonstrating the workings of the human anatomy.” He notes that Texas Instruments and its partners are offering ‘3D-ready’ projectors at

While there are many applications for 3D in addition to entertainment, there are mixed messages when it comes to its adoption in a wider environment little or no incremental cost, allowing schools to ‘future proof’ their purchases. “The education market offers strong potential growth and differentiation opportunities for vendors and channel partners alike,” Fisher adds. In theory, digital signage – with its mission to capture consumer attention – should also be a prime candidate for 3D. “There are real and significant technical barriers to be overcome before autostereoscopic ‘glasses-free’ 3D works well at a range of viewing distances,” notes Bob Raikes, managing director of Meko. “There are also barriers in distribution and content creation cost that will be hard

to overcome.” He goes on to point out that, without meaningful support from Microsoft for 3D in its Office suite, 3D is unlikely to be found in PowerPoint presentations any time soon. “And,” he smiles, “don’t hold your breath.” “Display technology needs to move forward a long way,” says Paul Gray, director of TV market research at DisplaySearch. “I don’t see people wearing 3D goggles for PowerPoint presentations, for example. 3D is tricky to set up or create content. We have seen a fair amount of bad 3D from Hollywood professionals, so it’s not something that is done easily. While it has some novelty appeal, it’s a long way off.” Some have said that consumers becoming used to HD at home ‘forced’ commercial applications to follow suit. Does that hold true in the case of 3D? “The problem is,” says Raikes, “3D adds

cost to content creation, as it will generally need to happen in parallel with 2D content creation. That wasn’t the case with HD, where you could create the content and then simply downscale it.” And as Gray points out, commercial users are highly adept at ascertaining return on investment: if 3D can’t be shown to more than pay for itself, it will struggle. For the foreseeable future, it seems likely that 3D will remain a niche market and will not become mainstream in the commercial/ business world – except, perhaps, in the education sector. In the short-tomedium term, only those applications that truly derive benefit from 3D will adopt the technology; 3D ‘because we can’ looks to be a way off. However, given the impetus – and investment – that exists behind the technology, it would be a brave man or woman who bets against it becoming widespread. ISE 2012 will certainly tell us more.

owards the end of 2010, North American research company PQ Media published a report indicating that US digital out-of-home advertising spending grew almost 15% in the first half of the year and looked likely to finish the year at around the same rate. Industry comment was that this represented something of a watershed for the digital signage industry. That’s certainly a point of view shared by Nick Gale, who recently took over as head of digital for POPAI UK and Ireland. Point-of-Purchase Advertising

T

International (POPAI) is the only not-for-profit trade association exclusively dedicated to serving the interests of all those involved in retail marketing. “It’s been said many times before by others,” he affirms, “but I really feel the industry is at a tipping point in 2011 – and there is not-yet-published research that confirms this.” He cites a range of factors – increasing measurement of digital signage demonstrating its effectiveness, together with cost reductions for large format screens, digital signage players and internet connec-

sale,” he says. “Displays will be an important part of retail store concepts. In the near future, there will be no store without at least one screen.” But both Gale and Schwede temper their optimism with advice to the industry as to what it needs to do if the momentum established in 2010 is to be continued. “Research and measurement will be critical if the large-scale capital expenditure commitment is to be justified,” says Gale. “Network operators will have to overcome their understandable reluctance to share their KPI data – and network

owners will increasingly need professional services to help them develop an integrated approach to operating an effective digital signage network.” Schwede is in agreement about the need for improved measurement. “The industry has to prove its marketing claims,” he says. “Customers are still uncertain about the ROI of digital signage – so customer insights are needed.” “One thing that has been missing so far,” he continues, “is pro-active, well thought-through marketing and public relations, and that needs to improve. Potential customers need to be educated about the benefits – and, just as importantly, the limitations – of digital signage.” And what are the key predictions for the coming year? “Green will be the standard approach in all enterprise projects,” says Schwede. “We’ll also see the software license business displaced by service offerings; smarter aggregation platforms will appear; established content providers will move into digital signage; and we’ll see increasing use of industry standards in all areas. Investors will start moving in, looking for the right technology and the right business model.” “Interactivity using a wide range of technologies, and mobile platforms,” says Gale. “Bigger, cheaper, brighter screens and the penetration of secondwave retail sectors such as financial services.” As Niels Bohr, the Danish physicist, famously said: “Prediction is very difficult – especially about the future.” However, continued success for digital signage seems assured.

“Research and measurement will be critical if large-scale capital expenditure is to be justified”

We ask: What are the drivers and inhibitors when it comes to the adoption of IP as an integration tool?

“IP is the integration platform of the future, and ubiquity, open standards, and scalability will drive its adoption. Enabling system components to snap into a nearomnipresent network architecture, and introducing rich functionality via software interfaces, IP-based systems are unstoppable.

“Impeding rapid progress, however, are lack of education, inertia, and availability of all elements at a reasonable price point. The need for compatibility with existing nonIP systems, and the lack of bridges between the two, remains an issue. Regardless, the transition to IP is inevitable, and every day it’s increasingly important that AV integrators understand, embrace, and use current IP tools.” Lou Giacalone, founder of CoolSign (now part of Haivision Network Video)

We ask: What evidence are you seeing of a demand for green solutions within the industry? “There is no question that the market is placing increasing emphasis on minimising the environmental impact of display solutions, and delivering on these expectations is a high priority for us. Examples of this include LED lighting in display wall cubes. “Our second-generation of LED cubes – announced today – now deliver up to 80,000 hours lamp life. We’ve also made significant reductions in the power consumption of our pro LCD ranges through features such as dual light sensors. “Elsewhere, we’ve made some more subtle improvements, such as reducing the weight and

increasing the use of recycled plastic in our display products. “As a company that is directly involved in environmentally friendly technologies such as photovoltaics, heat pumps and environmental control, we are fortunate to have already built-up quite a lot of expertise in this area which is helping guide the development of more efficient display technologies in the future.” (Mitsubishi Electric in Japan already operates a full-scale recycling facility.) Peter van Dijk, business development manager, Mitsubishi Electric Europe

We ask: What are the most significant developments in digital signage at the moment? “Specialised solutions for different needs of various industries, targeting specific customer needs in different domains, and meeting industry-specific needs in every small way is of

paramount importance. This concept should apply to other fields, like sports, advertising, traffic, and stage dramas.” Dennis Ren, vice president, Shenzhen Absen Industry Co.

Barco

Bright new future The OVL range of LED-lit, DLPbased video walls from Barco features an improved LED engine. According to the company, the OVL series reaches a brightness level that is ‘20% higher’ than any competing system, without shortening the projection system’s lifetime. The range is offered in 4:3 ratio, with screen sizes up to 80in with ‘seamless screens’. As with Barco’s 16:9 LED video walls, the new OVL series has an advanced heat management system which brings the LED temperature down to the optimal level. This is said to result in a ‘significantly longer lifetime’ of the projection sys-

tem, amounting to 80,000 hours of continuous operation in eco-mode. According to Barco, this equates to a 35% improvement over competing video walls. Alternatively, it is possible to boost the OVL’s brightness level by 20% without shortening system lifetime. Stand: 1K6

Two-in-one audio Transducers with magnetic power Dynacord

Dynacord is introducing the Promatrix 8000 to European audiences. The unit combines professional audio reproduction with public address and voice evacuation. The system is said to have an S/N ratio of 105dB, surpassing the performance requirements of live concerts. In addition, the system offers multichannel audio routing and multiband equalisation.

The heart of the system is a digital network controller that takes care of audio routing and control data. The controller offers digital audio processing and has eight slots for I/O cards for different types of sources. Multiple controllers can be networked to feed up to 1,000 zones, says the manufacturer. Stand: 3E130

Vox Pop We ask: What are the drivers and inhibitors when it comes to the adoption of IP as an integration tool?

“We see a significant driver in the push for network control and monitoring of hardware and infrastructure over the network, as well as integration with existing IP infrastructure for centralised management and control. Reduction in cost of ownership and forcing standardisation at the enterprise level with the adoption of converged technologies is also a significant factor in adoption of IP as an integration tool.” Phil Breitschadel, director of EMEA sales, Verrex “The drivers are still unified technology, cabling and integration. It is so much easier to keep systems running if base technology is the same and solutions can be easily integrated at high level. “Cost is probably still the main inhibitor. IP systems are often more costly than ‘legacy’, especially if you do not consider TCO (total cost of ownership) and wiring costs. Installers often argue that the cabling cost is not part of the budget, or they make a lot of money on this, so they are not very eager to use systems that minimise cabling infrastructure.” Johannes G Rietschel, CEO and Founder, Barix “IP and all of its integration possibilities are something that has previously been limited to the world of computing. However

now with an increasing demand for large amounts of information being delivered to multiple devices at a reliable speed, IP has become a natural ally to the integration world. “RS-232 has previously been relied upon; however, this can be costly and has its limits. Many commercial buildings have preinstalled Ethernet networks, making the connection and integration of AV equipment incredibly simple as no additional control wiring is required. More and more products are adopting IP connectivity for these very reasons. “We have utilised this at Mode Lighting and can even allow the creation of a virtual network; this means our BUS language can be sent via Ethernet to a completely different building, allowing multiple properties to be controlled as one seamless system.” Daniel Strzelecki, export sales engineer, Mode Lighting “The main driver of IP is the benefit of being able to network a device onto an existing Ethernet backbone and without the need for a dedicated serial cable. The inhibitor is that the integrator needs to up-skill in TCP/IP and configure network requirements for each device, and can no longer simply copy and paste an RS-232 code into a project and know that the device will talk to the control system. It is believed that IPv6 will overcome many of the configuration issues of IPv4.” Simon Wehr, director of marketing, Dana Innovations

RCF RCF is debuting four new coaxial speakers. They all u s e what is said to be a lightweight neodymium magnetic structure, designed to provide excellent linearity and high efficiency. The design is powered from a large single neodymium ring magnet that provides an extremely high flux density and BL factor, says RCF. The new hyper-vented aluminium basket and magnetic as-

sembly design provide ‘an excellent heat dissipation and lower power compression’. Special air-forced ventilations are provided for voice coil, magnet assembly and basket. All the models, except the CX12N351, feature a 2.5in voice coil combined with a fibreglass former and aluminium wire that drives the mid-bass cone. The 1.75in dome compression driver is loaded to a conical waveguide, and is said to provide a clear vocal output and a ‘perfect high frequency extension’. Cologne gets interpreter Brähler

The Institute of Translation and Multilingual Communication (ITMK) of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences has purchased a new Interpreter learning system from Brähler. The ITMK is a major training institute in the field of interpreting and translating. Apparently, every year around 1,200 individuals apply for the 270 seats available on the Multilingual Communication bachelor programme. Brähler says it was able to offer a tailor-made interpretation system to the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, based on positive experi-

ences with other institutes at home and abroad. The main demand was for the ability to work with students, under live conditions. The teachers brought in their requirements and suggestions for training with the new equipment. A special software user interface for teaching operations was adapted and installed for individual class specifics. According to the manufacturer, a key capability of the system is that it allows the interpreter to repeat-play the original spoken word, in order to catch up if speech is too fast. Stand: 3D120

Q&A Peerless-AV Europe Gordon Dutch, managing director

Has ISE come at a good time for the industry? ISE has definitely established itself as the major pro show for Europe and although InfoComm is still a very important show for our US and global business, it is clear that with ISE being earlier in the year and within a short flight for most of Europe this is also a key show for Peerless-AV. This year’s event comes at a time when we are experiencing a growing demand for digital signage solutions, in particular for our video wall mounts and digital menu boards, and it will be interesting to see how 3D technology influences this market. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? For Peerless, the ability to develop our brand is the key to our success. We are the market leader in the US and are growing quickly in EMEA, where we see the development of digital signage and education markets driving the business in Europe. The biggest threat I anticipate will be the spending cuts being implemented by the governments in many countries, which are bound to have some affect on the business. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? Until now Europe has not had a mount manufacturer like Peerless. This is firstly down to our size, as we have more than 500 fully employed members of staff and most of them are involved in the design, manufacture and delivery of our products. In addition, we cover all the major vertical markets from high-end custom solutions that can be specially designed to the individual client’s brief, right down to the basic entry-level products that are price driven. Now we have our own engineering and manufacturing in Europe, we have the ability to respond to our European clients with a speed and precision unseen until now. Stand: 11H65

Hitachi

Ultimate short throws Hitachi recently introduced its distribution network to what the company describes as Ultimate Short Throw Projectors. New for ISE is an interactive capability for this new range of projectors, a capability that Hitachi says will allow any surface to be turned into an interactive screen. The ED-A220N, CP-AW250N and CP-A300N are said to offer improvements in every area from easier installation to compact, lightweight design. Hitachi has reduced the throw distance to what it believes is the optimum level – 50cm for an

80in screen – while at the same time improving the image quality and almost eliminating the distortions inherent in short-throw projection. The projectors ship with a bundled wall mount, and their design, which incorporates three feet, means that only two quick and simple adjustments, to correct horizontal angle and tilt, are needed get a square image from a table top. When wall mounted, the projectors are said to be quickly installed by a single engineer with fine adjustment in six axes. Stand: 4Q24

VGA and audio cable German company TLS is showing its new VG A and audio cable. Offered at no extra charge for its customers, the new integrated audio cable is said to offer maximum ease of installation and ensures an optimum transmission of the VGA and audio signal. According to TSL, the extremely low damping coaxial core design, plus a high synchronisation, guarantee a reliable and optimum signal transmission. The audio signal is

transmitted in an extra shielded core to audio playback devices. TSL claims that the transmission quality of the VGA and audio cable not only provides a perfect image and sound quality, but also obviates the need for costly signal amplifiers. In addition, says the company, it saves costs and time at installations, since the VGA and audio cables do not have to be laid separately. Stand: 3C88

Innovation strategy projectiondesign Norway-based projectiondesign says that ‘innovation is the name of the game’ in terms of its presence at ISE 2011. Highlighted products include the FR12 remote light source (RLS) projector, which relocates the lamp to a rack-mount enclosure that can be positioned up to 30m from the projector head, with lighting passing from source to head via the company’s patented liquid light guide cable technology. On projectiondesign’s stand at ISE, this is being shown integrated into an ErgoDesk multifunctional industrial workstation, a configurable operator console from Suveren Rørmøbelfabrikk. Also on show is the F35 WQXGA DLP projector. Boasting 2,560 x

1,600 pixel resolution, this projector is designed for the most demanding applications. Anders Løkke, international marketing & communications manager at projectiondesign, commented: “Our focus at ISE this year is on corporate usage and on applications such as command and control where, we believe, the flexibility of installation enabled by our RLS technology is going to win us many friends. “All t he innovations we unveiled in 2010 are now shipping, and as 2011 unfolds we will see the reduced TCO and rapid ROI of our products appealing to more and more users in business and in industry.” Stand: 1J27

Newest among the featured models is the MW881UST ultra short throw projector. Designed for education, it has a 0.24 throw ratio, delivering an 87in image at 45cm from the screen. Short throw is a key feature, especially for schools, as it not only eliminates the problem of the screen being masked by the teacher’s shadow, but also minimises the possibility of pupils looking straight into the lens when the projector is switched on. Overall, it gives greater flexibility in where the projector is placed. With 2,500 lumens and WXGA resolution on offer, the DLP-based MW881UST – which is said to be 3D-ready – features a contrast ratio of 5,000:1 and a filter-free design for easy maintenance; it can be controlled via LAN. Support is provided for PC-less operation via its USB connectivity. Two D-sub computer inputs (shared with component video) are provided, as are composite video in, svideo in, audio in and out and microphone in. Audio from the MW881UST comprises two channels rated at 10W each. Audible noise is rated at 33dBA, reduced to 27dBA in eco mode. Closed captioning is supported. Stand: 5O120

news FunktionOne The 8,000-seat Kojice Steel Arena in Slovakia is a typical acoustically challenging sports arena made more difficult by the fact that its pitch is ice. The owners decided they had to rectify the poor performance of the earlier sound system and so approached Citylight, Funktion One representatives in the country, for a system. The budget is described as having been ‘very tight’. Citylight consulted with the F1 technical department to arrive at an AX88-based system with additional F118 bass for full range music reproduction. Nineteen AX88 speech-range and 10 F118 bass enclosures were installed last summer with F1 designing and providing all rigging metalwork. The result, says F1, was an extremely pleased customer and spectators who have subsequently written letters praising the new system. Stand: 6H144

Sennheiser

ADN system updates The ADN conferencing system can today be seen in an updated form. The new operating software will be available for download free of charge from the Sennheiser website by the middle of this month.

Launched last summer, the 19in rack-mount unit makes it possible to build conference systems with up to 400 terminals. The update allows the central unit of the ADN system to communicate directly with media control devices via an open protocol, so it can be integrated into existing AV control systems. An external audio mix mode within the software is said to improve the audio quality at conferences that take place at more than one location, by eliminating unpleasant echo effects whereby speakers hear their own voice with a delay. High-res touchpanels Extron Two larger, high resolution TouchLink Touchpanels are showing on the Extron stand. The TLP 1000MV and TLP 1000TV are fully configurable 10in models featuring a contemporary look and thin bezels. The 1,024 x 600 resolution touchscreen surface provides room for sophisticated controls and graphics. They incorporate an MTP twisted pair receiver, which accepts either S-video or composite video over a Cat5 cable. Power over Ethernet eliminates the need for a local power supply. The TLP 1000MV mounts on a wall, lectern, or other flat surface, while the TLP 1000TV sits on a tabletop or on a VESA standard mount with an optional adapter. “The new TouchLink Touchpanels answers our customers’ requests for bigger, configurable touchpanels with flexible mount-

ing options, said Casey Hall, VP of sales and marketing for Extron. “Their larger size and higher resolutions accommodate the advanced controls needed for sophisticated applications. GUI Configurator software makes configuration of the touchpanel easy, says the developer, with no graphic design skills required. This software offers ready-to-use templates for single display rooms, dual display rooms, divisible rooms, multi-image systems and video conference suites. Stand: 2C24

Special features of the new series are: class H 2-channel power amplifiers with two channels of either 250W or 500W; 24V emergency power input, and an ‘alive’ output that signals problems. The amplifiers can be switched on using 24V. The XV DC amplifiers are in compliance with all requirements of DIN VDE 0833-4 voice alarm systems. The output power stays constant when operation is switched to 24V supply. The DC modules also provide features of the XV series, such as softstart, remote power on. Stand: 6H152

Take an audio trip or two d&b audiotechnik For its inaugural appearance at the ISE2011 exhibition, d&b audiotechnik (products shown above) is offering a number of demonstration sessions in room E103 each day. Trip 1, Journey Into Listening takes attendees on a listening journey through the two series in the new White speaker range. It will look at the new opportunities these integration loudspeakers will open up for placement everywhere, no matter what colour, size or performance requirement. The journey moves from the smallest cabinets in the xS-Series to the larger cabinets designed for en-

vironments such as theatres and town halls and ends with the larger, arrayable cabinets of the xA-Series targeted towards sporting, multipurpose and outdoor installations. Trip 2, Journey Into Integration highlights the ease of access to preconfigured settings, which via an integrated processor can adapt the space, at the click of a button, for a variety of events from an area for dining to clubbing and dancing. The journey then moves to integration into a show control system and then onto integration in evacuation systems. Stand: 6H134 Room: E103

Chinese menu from Oz ABI China If you’re a wholesale distributor with a requirement for an extensive range of AV products, it might make sense to have those products manufactured to your requirements. And if you can marry western design and quality with Chinese cost, you may well be on to a winner. That was the thinking behind the formation of ABI China by ABI Pty, a distributor headquartered in Australia. Here at ISE, ABI China is focusing on its latest technology and new products. The emphasis is on fingertouch interactive products: a 65in interactive LCD (for use as Interactive White Board or digital signage); a 42in LCD touch kiosk; and a 32in

Projectors feature hybrid illumination

Installation projectors with elegant design

Casio

Mitsubishi Electric Electronics giant Mitsubishi Electric is showcasing its two newest high-end projectors at ISE this year. The XD8100U (XGA) and widescreen WD8200U (WXGA) dual-lamp projectors are the company’s latest high-end installation offerings, featuring a completely new design and performance in large venue applications such as auditoria or in high-ambient light environments. Available in white or black case versions, the 8000 series projectors are designed for either fixed install or rental use. The 8000 series also includes the UD8400U and UD8350U (WUXGA) projectors. Delivering 7,000 lumens and 6,500 lumens respectively, both the XD8100U and WD8200U feature a unique, patented image processing algorithm that analyses the input signal and extrapolates HD data missing from the original image in real time.

3G to Linx The result, says Mitsubishi, is ‘startlingly clear, bright images with every detail faithfully reproduced’. Mitsubishi’s Natural Colour Matrix (NCM) allows intermediate colours – yellow, cyan and magenta – to be controlled independently of red, green and blue, allowing accurate colour reproduction across the spectrum. Both models also feature built-in edge blending technology and advanced colour matching for seamless multi-projector performance. XD8100U offers a picture-in-picture facility, while the WD8200U allows a split screen showing two different inputs for maximum versatility. Stand: 2A24

Work with SmartOffice Simply Reliable Software The SmartOffice suite is the only all- in-one business software for the custom integration industry, claims developer Simply Reliable Software. The software is said to focus on a company’s processes, helping to organise, control and monitor the business with a real-time view of projects. Functions and features include scheduling, proposals, product database, purchase orders, inventory and integration to Quickbooks and Outlook. Design, Advanced Inven-

tory and Advanced Accounting are add-on modules. SmartOffice Design is intended to help transform a proposal into a rack or pictorial drawing automatically. It can work with native AutoCAD .dwgfiles or make them into a ‘smart’ drawing. In addition, the ability to work with elevations helps architects, interior designers, and builders to visualise the outcome of a project and create wire labels, drop tags, and wire pull lists. Distinguished by their hybrid light source – which uniquely combines LED and lasers – the four new Casio XJ-A projectors (which are based on DLP technology) each deliver 3,000 lumens. Life expectancy of the light source is 20,000 hours – significantly greater than for traditional lamps. The top of the range XJ-A255 delivers 3,000 lumens at WXGA (1,280x800) resolution, and includes USB and WLAN capability. The XJ-A250 offers similar brightness and resolution, but without USB and WLAN. Two models – the

XJ-A150 and XJ-A155 – also offer 3,000 lumens, but at XGA resolution. Like the XJ-

A255, the XJ-A155 features USB and WLAN. Contrast ratio for all projectors is 1,800:1, and powered zoom (2x optical) and focus are included. Weight is 2.3kgs, and power consumption is less than 1W in standby mode. Stand: 4O34

Analog Way

Eikos for switching The Eikos high-resolution switchers range from Analog Way is designed for rental and staging applications. “Eikos is a high-grade yet affordable solution offering advanced functions together with awesome visual effects,” explained Franck Facon, marketing and communication director, Analog Way. “With a comprehensive interface, Eikos ensures easy utilisation of the machine to produce outstanding shows or elaborate installations.”

The unit offers 12 inputs, including four fitted with SDI and two with DVI-D. It has three different operating modes: multilayer mixer, 12 x2 seamless native matrix and QuadraVision modes. In multilayer mixer mode, Eikos can display up to six layers: three live sources, one frame and two logos. Two picture-in-pictures (PIPs) can be displayed on a live background, or three PIPs on a still background. Eikos uses one output as a preview and the other for the audience. In addition to a classic preview, Eikos offers a stillmosaic full-preview function. This enables fast, easy monitoring by simultaneously displaying still images of the 12 sources being handled by Eikos. Stand: 3D100

Be With LG’s Digital Displays, Thrive With Its Business Solutions Right Around the Clock, You Can Now Experience LG’s World Beating Digital Displays and Business Solutions Everywhere In the fiercely competitive world of small- and medium-sized businesses, delivering the right message at the right time is absolutely crucial. But with tougher business conditions has come improved technology, and today’s digital displays and business solutions can get the message across more efficiently and accurately than ever before. Already very well known for its world-beating LED displays, LG will be showcasing more advanced digital displays and business solutions – including hotel TV systems, video conferencing and digital signage – throughout Integrated Systems Europe 2011, being held from February 1 through 3 in Amsterdam.

From the main entrance of LG’s booth through to its hotel lobby zone, visitors can experience a range of LG’s digital displays. First up, LG will be showing off the versatility of its products with a

By using such recreations of everyday scenes, LG is looking forward to showing how effective its digital signage products and business solutions are when it comes to delivering real, tangible benefits for businesses and their customers. By trying them out, visitors will know exactly how these solutions can work for them in everyday life.

range of vivid and multi-sized displays around its booth. Automatic management enabled by LG’s LED Studio software makes the displays very easy to use, while their high-powered lighting ensures they’re perfectly clear to everyone down on ground level.

To Watch Evolution of Digital Displays

At ISE2011, LG will be demonstrating all its digital displays and business solutions through simulations of real-life settings in a “resort” offering various services. The booth display will lead from a hotel lobby to a hotel room, a conference room, a subway station, an airport and a theater.

At the entrance and hotel lobby sections of LG’s booth, the

M4716T and M4214T, the company’s cutting-edge, highly adaptable touch displays, will be also on show. With an industryleading response time of 13.5ms, the M4716T can provide quick, easily controlled information that includes 3D imaging, making it ideal for outlets such as car dealerships.

Advertisement feature

At the digital art gallery in the hotel lobby, visitors can enjoy media art installations on LG displays including 72-inch LED and 65-inch LCD screens. Thanks to its 6.9mm bezel – the slimmest on any 40 inch-plus display – the 47-inch LED 47WV30 will show a stunningly life-like depiction of a digital pond. Along with its ecofriendly energy saving LED technology, the 47WV30 boasts an entirely seamless image and is perfectly compatible with SuperSign, LG’s Digital Signage solution.

Optimized Solutions From Shopping to Transportation Visitors will be able to see the exceptional control functions of LG’s displays in the retail shop zone. LG Digital Signage Solution works efficiently and seamlessly with various types of display and media player (PC), making it an integral component of LG’s packaged solutions. Included in this solution is LG’s SuperSign, a practical digital software optimized for small- and medium-sized businesses that makes it easy and quick to create content. With SuperSign, retail staff can focus on taking care of customers rather than worrying about how the shop signs are looking. At the pharmacy zone, LG will be showing off its Information TV, a simple signage solution that needs no additional media players or professional support. The Information

TV is a cost-effective solution that can be converted into a regular TV using a simple application. It packs USB playback, making it easy to install and operate, along with free templates that make it easy to create and edit content. Displays through multiple TVs are also available via third party media player. Additionally, LG’s M3801S stretched monitor, on display at the transportation facility zone, delivers an extremely effective solution for airports, subway stations, bus stops or any other businesses that need wide displays in constricted spaces. The stretched monitors are ideal for advertising, or for providing passengers with useful information such as timetables. LG’s projectors, including 60-inch and 3D versions, will also be on show in the Theater Zone.

To Meet the Perfect Hotel TV and Video Conference Systems in the Hotel Zone In the booth’s “hotel room,” LG will be displaying its advanced, integrated Hotel TV solutions customized to different types of hotel. Just like real guests in LG-equipped hotels, visitors can use a remote control, fitted with Pro:Centric technology, to operate any multi-media devices in the hotel room. Pro:Centric also makes it possible to gain access to an array of useful

information about hotel services, local travel information, weather and news on their TV or other wireless devices. What’s more, LG’s Interactive TV lets guests check in or out and book room service with the touch of a few keys on their remote control.

LG will also be unveiling two types of video conferencing systems in the conference room on the booth’s second floor. The all-in one desk type VCS systems feature vivid screens and easy interfaces, while the room-type VCS boasts outstanding connectivity. LG VCS offers super-high definition video of 720HD, enabling realistic telepresence on a 24-inch high resolution LCD. In addition, with their high-performance built-in speakers and microphone, LG’s VCS let users feel as if they are actually sitting in the same room as everyone else in the conference. LG’s 65 inch LCD IWB and 60 inch PDP IWB, the ideal type of displays for business presentation and conference, will also be displayed at the wall of the conference zone.

For more information, please visit www.lg.com. LG will showcase a range of commercial display products and projectors at its booth at ISE 2011, which is taking place in the RAI Convention Center,in the Dutch city of Amsterdam, from Feb 1 through 3.

Let’s loop together

We ask: What are the drivers and inhibitors when it comes to the adoption of IP as an integration tool?

“”This may be a bit early to tell from our side as we do not yet have a product out. However, it seems as if the sheer savings in cabling costs might become a very strong driver in the broadcasting market and maybe also, therefore, in the AV install market. “Other than that there will of course also be the various forms of ‘intelligence’ that manufacturers can build into their products that will be a driving force. Things like functionality surveillance, which can ease serviceability.“ Lars-Olof Janflod, international sales manager, Genelec “IP has opened up new mechanisms to deliver content to more tightly targeted audiences. Individuals rather than groups get to see and hear what

they want when they want it. Rising demand among individuals, corporations, non-profits, and government entities is the key driver, along with ever-decreasing costs per byte of content delivered. “A key challenge is still the wide range of file formats and incompatible components. The ability to quickly modify and adapt equipment to meet current needs has also become more critical.” Mike Buchanan, vice president, Bittree “Atlona’s products assign IPs to switchers and scalers for easy access to Atlona units via a web portal. Users typically access their units through Atlona’s net control software, included with most of our products. Easy manipulation and access with Atlona switchers and scalers allows us to stand out and provide superior solutions for our customers.” Joshua Carlson, director of public relations, Atlona Technologies

Ativa polls via wireless Fleetwood Group One of the most challenging aspects of getting a large-scale response system to work reliably is that everything hinges on the speed and responsiveness of the wireless link. This link has to maintain its integrity even in hostile RF-dense operating environments where the system will have to cohabit with other active 2.4GHz sources of potential interference within a venue, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. US designer and manufacturer Fleetwood Group says it has solved this by employing patented synchronised polling methods and pseudo-random frequency hopping RF protocols that include integrated WiFi avoidance features. This allows the USB base station to sweep around a venue, time synchronise and individually poll every single keypad of potentially thousands present within a matter of seconds. If the base station fails to get through to any one keypad, it will instantly retry on another frequency. The technology is integral to touchscreen audience voting system, Reply Ativa. This has an interactive

WRS8200 wireless keypad running from a rechargeable lithium polymer battery and a large, backlit 3.2inch QVGA colour touchscreen for display of fully customisable key/button responses. Text responses can be made via an onscreen qwerty keyboard or SMS-style buttons. In operation, an Ativa base station – equipped with a RF transceiver, and housed in an enclosure roughly the size of a normal USB memory stick – plugs into a PC’s USB port from where it can form a secure two-way wireless link with sister RF transceivers embedded into each of up to 15,500 uniquely identifiable Ativa WRS8200 wireless keypads. Ativa is controlled by a PC application that integrates with PowerPoint to allow presenters to create slides and display the live results to the audience via a projector or display, and to the individual participant via keypad display. Billed as the ‘first truly automatic domestic hearing loop amplifier in the world’, Bo Edin’s UniVox AutoLoop is claimed to deliver excellent sound quality regardless of the connected loop type or length, due to its adaptive Automatic Gain Control. According to the company, the level in the loop is based on a realtime analysis of the relation between the loop system and the created field strength, the unit thus forgoing the need for any manual controls. A blue LED simply tells whether the unit is on and transmitting. Users can connect their AV equipment to the loop system using two 3.5mm mic/line inputs, then connect in turn to their own choice of loop pad, sofa loop or room loop. The amplifier is powerful enough to support loops in living spaces up to 50sqm. Stand: 11C51

Wireless for less Electro-Voice

The new R300 is a wireless microphone system that Electro-Voice says opens up a new category in the marketplace: entry-level professional. Features such as One-Touch ClearScan and EZsync infrared technology are claimed to make the R300 quicker and easier to set up than any other similarly priced wireless system. Its rack-mountable metal receiver, metal bodypack and handheld transmitters, and remote-mountable antennas are also ‘of a build and performance quality usually reserved for higherpriced professional products’, says the manufacturer. The R300 receiver system has

simple controls and an easy-to-read display. Rack-mount kits and frontmount antenna cables are available for professional installation. For applications with up to four receivers in one rack, the APD4+ antenna splitter can provide antenna and power feeds. The BP-300 is an all-new metal bodypack transmitter which uses two AA batteries for 14 hours of use. A TA4 connector allows the unit to be used with any Electro-Voice lapel or head-worn microphone. Electro-Voice’s ClearScan system scans through the R300’s 32 preset channels and selects the clearest channel. Stand: 3D130

Easier HDMI installation HDMI has rapidly become the connection technology of choice when it comes to delivering optimum image quality to screens. A further attraction is that HDMI cable can carry not only video signals, but also audio and data. However, installing HDMI cabling has historically proven difficult, because HDMI cables were purchased pre-terminated. This limited choice in terms of cable length – leaving surpluses – but perhaps more importantly, it made installing HDMI cable in conduits almost impossible.

Exhibitor Covid believes it has the answer with its new Field Terminated HDMI connector which allows bulk cable to be run to the desired length, easily pulled through conduits, then terminated on-site. Stand: 4R68

HDMI UTP matrix AMX Visitors can find out what makes the HDMI UTPro the highest performing digital media switcher, says AMX. Designed to transmit uncompressed 1920x1200 HD up to 100m, the HDMI UTPro is a full matrix switcher that delivers eight channels of HDMI, with HDCP authentication, across a network via a single UTP cable. AMX is also demonstrating how it is providing its dealers with the

tools to integrate devices like the iPad and iPhone. Elsewhere on the stand, the Resource Management Suite (RMS) Wall showcases this room management, scheduling and equipment monitoring software package. Allowing AMX to offer ‘unprecedented levels’ of functionality and control capability across multiple applications, RMS ensures that resources can be managed and maintained proactively and to optimum operating and environmental efficiency. APO Founded in 2004 to address the growing opportunity for replacement projector lamps, Taiwanese company APO International can now offer replacement lamps for more than 3,500 different models of projector – and, thanks to continuing investment in the design and manufacture of new housing moulds, expects this number to rise to 4,500 by the end of this year. The company says that its APOG replacement lamps use the original bulb as fitted by the projector manufacturer – thus offering identical lifetime and performance – but cost less, and so represent better value for money. APO International is represented in 26 countries around the world. Stand: 5Q82

Vox Pop “While we are seeing iPhones and iPads being used as additions to traditional control systems that provide apps such as Crestron, we are also seeing iPort Control Mount products, in particular the CM2000 In-Wall Control Mount for iPad being used in projects where the home owner simply wants to use the iPad as a communication and information hub featuring their favorite apps such as Facebook, weather, traffic reports, email and even recipes. iPods have also delivered excellent convenience and user-friendliness for music replay when integrated into control and distributed audio systems – something I believe we will see grow even further with the uptake of Apple’s AirPlay.” Simon Wehr, director of marketing, Dana Innovations “The introduction of smart pads and phones has revolutionised the way residential and, indeed, commercial properties are controlled. The use of touch-screens both handheld and wall-mountable has often been dismissed due to costs and the requirement for complex dedicated processors; now the introduction of Apple and Androidbased devices has brought this technology to the masses. “With the increase in IP-based protocol, the integration of these devices into everyday life for simple yet effective control has never

We ask: Where are you seeing the most interest in the use of iPads, iPhones or similar devices as control interfaces?

been easier. At Mode Lighting we identified this several years ago and now our products are built around TCP/IP connectivity. “This is achieved with our inbuilt web server, which allows seamless integration with a vast amount of controllers, from laptops to smart pads, without the requirement for any additional software or hardware.” Daniel Strzelecki, export sales engineer, Mode Lighting “Standard devices are invading the world of control in the form of i-devices, smartphones and tablet PCs. These cost-effective devices, originating in the mass market and coming in at a clear price advantage, will make inroads on the proprietary solutions. “In addition, these new devices will be able to use significant new communication standards. In the residential sector, these include especially the TCPIP and GSM standards. “As these new communication devices advance, the knowledge about the possibilities for control will also increase. The users of these new communication devices are open to new applications for these devices. “The residential sector will therefore obviously talk to these consumers directly to explain to them the interlinking of modern communication solutions and control solutions. New markets will be developed.” Rainer Dubiel, product manager and authorised representative, TSL

We ask: What are the hottest trends in residential technology at the moment?

“Currently, the hottest trend in residential technology is to simplify the entire control part. It does not interest the customer how it looks behind the walls or how the selected system works, but he wants to know about the controls and

their functions. “He is not at all interested in any complicated things – he wants it easy, as easy as possible. But the control devices have to look very elegant and luxurious.” Erik von Krause, CEO, see & touch Marbella

Stealth Acoustics According to Stealth Acoustics, the latest versions of its invisible speakers enhance fidelity, high-frequency smoothness and bass performance over previous offerings, while installation has been streamlined. The new speakers are direct replacements for the FX and AX lines. The LinearResponse Series of invisible in-wall or in-ceiling speakers incorporate a new facepanel material that provides a flatter front surface area. This is said to eliminate the need for plaster or fill materials prior to final finishing with paint, wallpaper or other finishes. The new versions are also said to offer greatly improved audio response, with a warmer sounding high frequency range and more bass output. Stand: 5O105

Designed for easy concealment behind plaster, paint or wallpaper, the Revox Re:sound I invisible speakers are intended to provide ‘complete freedom of design’. At only a few millimetres thick, the speakers can transform walls or ceilings into sound sources. The special material that the soundboard is made from oscillates

in a controlled manner, causing sound to radiate from the wall or ceiling. In this way, practically any surface can be converted into a sounding board, says the manufacturer. The size of the speakers has been set to the standard DIN dimensions used in dr y wall construction. Stand: 1L120

Advanced waterproof TVs Aquavision

The latest Aquavision range of waterproof TVs features the 19in 1080p HD Ready screen, and 26in, 32in and 40in 1080p Full HD screens. All Aquavision TVs are now LED

LCD, delivering improved contrast, brighter colours and reduced mounting depth. The new eco-friendly LEDs are said to consume up to 40% less energy than conventional sets and run on low power (24V), so they can be mounted safely in any environment. Also featured in the new range are DVB-T2 tuners for Freeview HD (UK), MPEG-4 (Europe) and ATSC tuners for US markets. And Aquavision is now offering the option of IP connection for web access. CYP

The PU-Q1H8CS is an HDMI to Cat6 splitter. It has eight Cat6 outputs and can be used with the receiver part of its CYP stable-mate, the PU-107RX Cat6 to HDMI receiver, for distributing HDMI over distances of up to 40m at 1080p/8-bit. CYP claims that one of the main USPs for this approach is that the system retains a pure HDMI signal to send down the Cat6 network, pointing out that many other similar solutions use a down-scaling con-

version at the transmitter end, which usually transmits an analogue signal and then up-scales and converts the signal back to digital at the receiver end. The company argues that its system produces superior results, as it is digital point-to-point; this maintains a cleaner and stronger signal and results in the playback hardware performing to its full potential. Stand: 5O98

Revolver The company’s new in wall/on wall loudspeaker is the AudioVue 2. The range includes four models and will, says the company, soon be supplemented by a flat subwoofer. The AudioVue 1 has a tweeter and single 6in bass unit, while the AudioVue 2 has a tweeter, twin 5in midrange units and an 8in bass unit. The AudioVue 3 has twin 6in mid/bass drivers like the AudioVue 1, with a tweeter in between and a 10in bass unit. The AudioVue Centre is the same size as the AudioVue 1, Stand: 5Q89

Elipson Acoustic speaker manufacturer Elipson has launched the 4260, a premium model said to combine exceptional performance with state-ofthe-art design. The 4260 is a three-way bass reflex floorstander featuring a 38cm woofer that Elipson promises will reach frequencies as low as 31Hz. See it on the Inovadis stand. Stand: 2A51

residential systems News Analysis The adoption of the eminently portable iPad for professionalgrade integration projects has added an important dimension to Apple’s latest global success story, writes David Davies

An iPad for all – or is it all hype? There could be as many as 20 million iPads out there by the end of this year – enough to dominate the remote control market he Steve Jobs-fronted press conference to introduce Apple’s latest innovation to the world’s media has become a familiar – almost reassuring – staple of the technological calendar. Many of the products launched during these sessions have gone on to assume a lasting influence, but arguably none more so than the iPad tablet computer. Remarkably given the phenomenal size and scale of its global impact, the iPad is still several months short of its first birthday, having reached its first customers in early April 2010. Without doubt the consumer technology talking point of last year, the iPad’s agenda-setting capabilities have been backed up by sustained sales. Prior to year’s end, eMarketer estimated total US sales of at least 8.5 million for 2010, rising to nearly 20 million this year, while a DRAMeXchange Market View suggested that the iPad could account for as much as 95% of the tablet market in 2011. One byproduct of the iPad’s rapid ascendance has been an extensive debate about the actual role of tablet computers. Are they for relaxation/recreation, or can they also be serious work tools? The general perception of the iPad is that it can satisfy both areas of requirement. The device’s aura of credibility has surely contributed to its rapid

Loewe

Cult of the individual The focus for Loewe at ISE this year is its two ranges of televisions – The Individual, and the Connect. The Individual gets its name from the broad range of configuration options. Not only are four screen sizes available – the LEDbacklit 32in and 55in were recently added to the 40in and 46in – but Loewe says that it also offers incomparable freedom in terms of colour, design, sound, set-up options and technical features. The 32in model features 100Hz technology, while the 55in screens includes intelligent backlight control and 400Hz

refresh. The integrated CI+ interface, which allows reception of encrypted channels, also guarantees the set is future-proof, according to Loewe. WLAN connectivity is available, while Media+ technology makes access to various multimedia functions straightforward – including online. The MediaUpdate capability provides the possibility of receiving new functions through online software updates. Stand: 5N114

Waterfall Audio

Revolution in control

Not long before ISE 2011 opened its doors, Waterfall Audio launched its Serio loudspeaker which has pride of place on the company’s stand in Amsterdam. Described as ‘groundbreaking’, it takes advantage of Waterfall’s expertise in glass design while at the same time, says the company, delivering high performance sound. Capable of being mounted on the wall or ceiling, or standing on a table top, it is available in black, white or silver with matching grilles; orange and green ‘fashion’ grilles are also available. At the heart of the Serio is Waterfall’s ‘Heatstream’ technology which, says the company, delivers ‘incredible’ levels of power from a compact speaker unit. By coupling the speaker’s voice coil to the unit’s aluminium body, the speaker’s Atohm driver can, according to Waterfall, efficiently dissipate enough heat for the high-power demands of quality audio and intensive home cinema soundtracks. Stand: 5Q80

RTI The next generation of RTI wireless remote controls features what the company describes as a ‘revolutionary’ dual RF board technology that gives custom installers greater flexibility for reliable control in any situation. The new T3-V+ and T2C+ controllers support 433MHz RF for one-way control and 2.4-GHz ZigBee for bidirectional communication with RTI processors, as well as supported third-party electronics like music servers, lighting, and web-based RSS feeds for weather updates. While both remote controls continue to provide direct infrared control, the T3-V+ offers enhanced 802.11b/g wireless Ethernet support. Stand: 4O52

Euro debut for remote Elan Elan Home Systems has undertaken the European market introduction of its new Elan g! HR2 handheld remote control. The HR2 remote features the Elan g! engine and hybrid use of backlit buttons with a 2.4in OLED touch display. This provides all the function of hard buttons and a touchscreen, packaged in a remote that weighs only eight ounces. The remote is designed to deliver quick-touch access

to media, climate, lighting and security subsystems. Integrated Wi-Fi and IR ensure rich metadata content, as well as fast local control of sources and TVs. Other features include a lithium polymer battery and a charging base that keeps the HR2 in an upright position. “With Elan g! we set out to create the best whole-house system making sure that the whole family could enjoy it,” said Paul Starkey, Elan Home Systems president. residential systems Thinstall range expands... but collapses to only 38mm Chief Milestone AV brand Chief is presenting its Thinstall low-profile swing arm wall mounts. Designed for use with all types of flat-panel TVs, the slim, rugged mounts have an ultra slim 38mm profile, extend up to 63.5cm for viewing from any angle, and support as much as 56.7kg. The Thinstall swing arm mounts collapse to 38mm depth while offering smooth, Centris finger tip tilt. High strength, forged steel arms are used for the Thinstall design for extra rigidity. Chief claims to have added industryfirst features to this new series such as the Centerless lateral shift feature, which offers up to 40cm of post-install lateral shift, while height and levelling adjustments of up to 25mm can be made after the mount is in place. All hardware (screws, spacers, and hex keys) are supplied for

mounting on wood, concrete, or brick walls. Multiple cable paths have also been provided and are enclosed with covers allowing toolfree access. A wide-open wall plate lets installers place the mount and connect power. One installer can mount the system’s top rail and slide on the entire assembly. The full range of Thinstall accessories is

slated to be available this year; the first is a component shelf that can be used above or below the TV. Accessories scheduled to come include camera shelves, speaker adapters surge adapters, a portrait adapter, and a cable wall channel. Stand: 2C66

EMP loudspeakers Described by one reviewer as ‘gorgeous’, the E55Ti tower loudspeakers from EMP Tek are the focus of attention on the Aldous Systems stand. Part of the Impression Series, the speakers stand 47.5in high and feature three 6.5in poly-matrix woofers, two 5.25in aluminised poly-matrix midrange drivers with fixed phase plugs and a 1in polysilk soft dome tweeter. The dual 5.25in midranges are aligned in a mid-tweeter-mid configuration resulting, says the company, in a dynamic sound with controlled dispersion. The E55Ti is complemented by the E10s powered subwoofer. Incorporating a discrete class A/B analogue power supply amplifier, it features a powerful magnet, enhanced suspension and heavy-duty voice coil to give the driver elevated performance – allowing high output capability and accurate dynamic reproduction. It also includes a crossover bypass feature, which allows end-users to use either the crossover in their receiver or sub. Stand: 5R118

Earthquake Sound

Telestos lowers SPL losses According to Earthquake Sound, the sleek, slim exteriors of the company’s Telesto tower speakers – the latest addition to the Titan range – are matched only by their performance. The main Telesto cabinets are built from multi-laminations of steam-bent, high density fibre board which, says the company, offer extreme rigidity as well as lower cabinet vibration. They are loaded with XLT EQ8 extra-long excursion subwoofers that are said to create tight, fast, and accurate low-frequency extension. The EQ8s are mounted 90° off-axis from the front of the speakers, which allows for a slim profile while delivering what the company claims is an exceptional bass response. The mid-band of the Telestos is equipped with two 4in carbon fibre drivers. In an array-type design, SPL losses due to the distance between the speakers and the listener are said to be four times lower than in a conventional design. Earthquake says

that the dual carbon fibre drivers are fast, neutral, and voice tuned. The Telestos are crowned with two conically shaped epoxy cabinets that harbour the T1 tweeter and the M2 midrange. The T1 and M2 are placed at about 1m elevation from the base allowing the speaker, says the company, to produce linear response that is not obstructed by furniture and that is more direct to a sitting listener. Buying signals from across the board For Hall Research, an unprecedented level of competitor activity is good news, because it provides a reliable indicator that the economy as a whole is picking up believe that the industry has great potential to grow as we progress through 2011. At Hall Research we have been seeing slow but steady growth in the past quarter from our dealer and distributor base. Increased activity on RFQs (Request for Quote) for future large-scale projects that will start later this year and an immediate increase in small to mid-size projects being fulfilled now, or in the near future, are also strong indicators. While the global economy is still in a recovery process, corporate and government spending is picking up, many projects that were on hold during the height of the recession are starting to be executed and revisited.

ital signage and AV capabilities are expected wherever people gather in the marketplace, health facilities, hospitality industry, sports and entertainment venues. While Hall Research has been manufacturing and designing product for more than 25 years, never have we seen so much competition from locally (USA) based manufacturers and overseas. With increased demand and suppliers, we have a real opportunity to shine by offering high quality products and support to our worldwide dealer base. End users expect their AV installation to be reliable, have HD-quality video and audio and they want to control their system easily. It is critical in this environ-

“While the global economy is still in a recovery process, corporate and government spending is picking up” Audiovisual products have become part of our daily life as we expect information to be available to us wherever we are. This opens opportunities at multiple levels. Places such as movie theatres have AV not only in the cinema but also feature digital signage with wall-mount displays for show information and digital menu boards. It is now expected that a conference room will have some sort of AV system from the basic wallplate to a more complex system including control, matrix switchers, scalers and IP-streaming devices. Classrooms of the future are loaded with a variety of audiovisual products to aid in student learning and enhance the presentation by the educator. dig-

ment to have innovative products with unique features with the latest technology that simplify installations, are ‘user friendly’ and, at the same time, are of the highest quality. It is the challenge of the manufacturer to make it look beautiful to the customer while providing a feature-rich quality product that wows the designer/installer. At ISE we are showing our newest products, including a cost-effective control system with AV distribution and amplification using Cat5 cabling. The VSA-51 lends itself to a variety of education, house of worship, medical and corporate applications, allowing for a mix of digital and analogue inputs and outputs. Stand: 1K2

Zen Interactive comes to ISE Tranzendia Centre stage on the stand of exhibitor Tranzendia is the company’s range of interactive whiteboards. Available in sizes from 1,752mm to 2,642mm, the Zen Interactive Series 4IRs benefits from a protective polymercoated surface. The board is estimated to have a lifetime of 60 million touches – around 11 years in normal use. By using IR technology, the protective steel/matt finish whiteboard surface can recognise a number of writing objects, including

a stylus, pointer, marker or even the touch of a finger. The company says that the protective layer provides a very strong and durable surface that requires very little maintenance. The IR-sensing technology comes protected by a cover resistant to dust, oil, water and interference from ambient light. Easiteach and Wizteach software packages are optionally available, as is an intelligent pen and eraser tray. Stand: 3A83

Comm-Tec

Hitachi whiteboards From last month, Comm-Tec has become a distributor for Hitachi whiteboards. Besides the whiteboard, the complete solution offered by Comm-Tec includes a projector, a related mount, carrier or wall mount and a Samsung visual presenter that can be connected to the whiteboard

and controlled over it. All components can be ordered individually. The latest models in Hitachi’s Starboard series can be operated with a pen or a finger. The robust surface resists even the hardest strains and the design of the projection surface allows for an even illumination without a hotspot, says the distributor. Multitouch allows for the simultaneous operation of the whiteboard by up to three people, a useful function for instruction when, for example, several students have to solve an arithmetic problem simultaneously. New voting module Audio-Technica The new ATCS-V60 modular voting unit for Audio-Technica’s ATCS-60 infrared conferencing system incorporates a flexible design that allows the unit to be added to existing ATCS-60 installations, while its cover plate and long connecting cable enable hidden voting in secret ballots, says the manufacturer. When connected to the ATCSM60 delegate unit, the ATCSV60’s five-button configuration offers versatile voting options in addition to straightforward yes/no and yes/no/abstain votes. A maximum of 150 voters can be handled by an ATCS-60 system using ATCS-V60 modules. Increasing the usability and costeffectiveness of the voting unit,

Audio-Technica’s ATCS-60 system software is free of charge and directly stores the result of every poll in a conference protocol file. For extended documentation, the results can be exported to a CSV file for use in Microsoft Excel, Open Office etc. Harvey Roberts, AudioTechnica senior UK marketing manager, commented: “The ATCSV60 delivers real benefits both in terms of cost and functionality to users of our ATCS-60 conferencing system.” Stand: 1H80

Niko The manufacturer is using ISE to launch its latest generation of systems for residential use. Niko Home Control uses a minimum of energy and has an eco-display that shows how much energy residents are using at any time. “Thanks to Niko’s commitment to innovative solutions, both installers and residents get an installation that is very user-friendly and flexible”, said Peter Watteeuw, MD, Niko. Niko Home Control is said to be easy to install due to its PCB concept. One flush-mounting box provides multiple control points. In the finishing phase, the installer can choose single or dual PCBs. This means that users only have to decide in the final phase how many buttons are needed in every room and can add extra controls later without the need for further drilling or channelling work. Digigram-ACP merger Having launched ACP (Agence Centrale de Presse) – said to be the first B2B editorial marketplace for newspapers – the ACP Group joined forces with Digigram last autumn for the next stage of its development. Now ISE 2011 attendees get the first chance to see the fruits of this alliance. “This merger is a fantastic opportunity for Digigram because it combines the pursuit of development in the areas that, historically, are the heart of our business and associates us with the ACP project launched by ACP Group. It will enable us to add value as well as being highly motivating for our employees,” said Philippe Delacroix, Digigram’s president and CEO. The organisation aims to ensure the acquisition, storage, transport and management of content for the media in order to improve their productivity and responsiveness. The deal will generate ‘numerous synergies’, a statement said. Stand: 6H150

Euroscreen

Screen for multipurpose venues Available in five sizes from 8m wide to 12m wide, the Screenint Cine Pro electric screen is designed for cinemas, theatres and auditoriums: the fact that it is said to be easily retractable means that a stage can be used either for projected shows or live events. The capstan motor that is at the heart of the system – and that carries a five-year warranty – is located in the middle of the structure and uses steel cables to raise and lower the screen. Rolling up/down time is between 59 seconds and 85 seconds, depending on the size of the screen. A safety system prevents potentially dangerous lowering of the screen in the event of, for example, motor failure, enabling the Cine Pro to conform to a number of safety standards such as CEI EN 55014-1 and CEI EN 50082-1.

BXB Manufacturer BXB recently launched a new type of sequential power controller, which ISE visitors can get their hands on today. The unit provides not only 12 circuits of 16stage sequential power control, but also RS-323, RS-485 and USB control interfaces. It can control up to 15 pieces of equipment. BXB offers a variety of applications, including network remote control on mobile devices enabling users to control the situation at their fingertips. Other product features include AC overload protector, turn on/off power sequential control, and turn on/trigger on contacts. Stand: 3C123

Belden Brilliance connects fibre BTX Technologies Interface and integration product distributor and manufacturer BTX Technologies, has added Belden FiberExpress Brilliance field-installable connectors to its product range. FiberExpress connectors are said to be the only fibre optic solutions to offer reliable terminations in less than five seconds, without the need for termination tools. “The difficulty in terminating fibre has been the biggest reason AV integrators have resisted using

fibre on projects,” said Greg Schwartz, president of BTX. “When fibre is specified, subcontractors are almost always used. Belden’s FiberExpress Brilliance connectors now allow integrators easily to terminate the fibre themselves. “These connectors add value to their installations by providing extremely reliable terminations, while offering time and money savings in the field to enhance their bottom line.” Stand: 2A61

news Vox Pop

We ask: What do you identify as the most significant factors in the growth of ISE as an event?

“I think the clear focus of ISE on professional AV and system integration is the most important factor behind its growth. The good experience that both visitors and suppliers have from the past years has resulted in a wellknown ‘ISE’ name as the place to be if you are in these sectors. Murat Keskinkilinc, product marketing manager conference systems, Bosch

“A challenging economic climate comes with opportunities as well, as some businesses and segments grow while others remain soft. We’ve seen the commercial sector pick up especially in educational and institutional markets as planned infrastructure upgrades stay on track. “ISE is a natural venue for aggregating the products, systems and tools necessary to pursue these opportunities and provide ‘one-stop shopping’ for system integrators committed to staying ahead. The increase of interest in a show such as ISE is directly proportional to the concerns and challenges defining today’s system integration business. Graham Hallett, president, Xantech

“ISE is special, and always was; the dealers take more time to go around and chat and are interested in things. There are not so many private people – this is about the community of integration companies. “We all know each other and we all try to find solutions, mostly customised for our customers. We know that it is not easy to create a unique concept in integrating technology but the community coming to ISE tries to create something for the future and be inventors every day. “The visitors want to see everything, and that is why even if you do not have the best location, you will get traffic at your booth. It is not the huge visitor companies that come, but the small quality ones that make good contacts and you can build a long-term relationship with. Lars Runne, head of international marketing, shareholder, ad notam

“ISE is an important event for our industry, due in part to its large size which attracts our integrator customers as exhibitors, as well as end-users to the show. Additionally, the breadth of technology on offer is interesting in itself, providing inspiration and insight for future projects. “Amsterdam is attractive due to the convenient location for large parts of the European market, lowering the cost of attending. Adam Neale, managing director, 7thSense

SMS Many visitors to ISE are looking for the latest developments in interactive white boards (IWBs) and exhibitor SMS Smart Media Solutions has something that is likely to be of interest. The newly announced product is called the Short Throw Wall Manual, and is a bracket that holds both an interactive board and a projector. SMS says that the bracket makes it easier to reach the board – benefiting students and teachers. The design principles behind the bracket were that it should not be technical, should be easy to install, should be inexpensive and should be lightweight. The bracket is delivered partially assembled, enabling one person to install it in less than an hour. Stand: 4Q40

Taking control of projectors Neets The Neets Control-DK is said to be an economical control system for large screen projectors. It also controls room functions such as lights, projection screen and room darkening. ‘Many of us have been in a situation where we are about to start a presentation, but unable to find the remote control for the projector,’ suggests the Danish AV classroom specialist. ‘If we ever find the right remote control, we don’t know which button to push because there are so many of them. A Neets Control-DK solves the problem. Placed in the panel on the wall next to the other switches of the room it con-

tains a minimum of buttons – easy and manageable.’ The Neets Control-DK is designed to have no complicated submenus or any unnecessary buttons. Once the input source has been selected, the rest of the process works automatically at the push of a button. A motion sensor can be attached to enable auto power on when the room is entered, or an alarm unit is available to warn if the projector is removed. Stand: 3A102

Raxxess for racks Chief After acquiring Raxxess in 2009, Chief is launching a new line-up of AV rack solutions. The Raxxess Series is the result of listening to what system integrators said would make their installs easier and more efficient, says Chief. From extra space gained for mounting small components in the bottom of each rack, to offering consistent ventilation options, the new Raxxess Series is said to be engineered for quality. Some of the rack configurations highlighted in the RAI this week are: the E1 Enclosed Rack, which is of

solid steel construction, has laser cut knockouts and integrated cable tie points with an included rear rack rail; and the S1 KnockDown Rack, which is a skeleton rack of solid steel construction and which the company says requires only five minutes to assemble. Additionally the F1 Furniture Rack comes in three sizes and three different finishes. It ships fully assembled with large casters for easy manoeuvring, a steel sub-frame for stability and durability and an open rear door for ease of installing components. Stand: 2C66

ClearOne Among the innovations on show at the ClearOne stand is ChatAttach 150, a USB speakerphone system for soft phone applications. The system, designed for small and mid-size rooms, contains two speakerphones that can be connected – even with a call in progress – to function as a single system for even, fullroom coverage. The 620 ChatAttach, which connects to any PC or laptop, works with leading brands of VoIP phone systems, internet phones, and web conferencing applications. Stand: 3C121

New vibration-proof Televic Conference Entry-level Q&A racks are on display system Unitech Systems

Sophisticated electronics have many enemies – among them heat, damp and dust. The harshest environments, though – such as visitor attractions – will also see those electronics subjected to vibration, another factor guaranteed to reduce reliability. Designed for those kind of installations is a new series of 19in racks from Unitech Systems. The racks use a ‘box-in-box’ approach in which the internal box is isolated from the vibrations to which the external box is subjected.

The degree of anti-vibration proofing can be varied according to the weight of the equipment in the rack, providing the maximum protection possible. Standard dimensions for the rack are 22U, 32U and 42U, with a choice of 650mm and 1,050mm depth. The company says that it can design custom solutions i f t h e s e d i m e n s i o n s a re not appropriate. The racks can be equipped with steel doors, glass doors, side covers, roof ventilation, telescopic shelves and so on, together with braked wheels and multi-sockets. Air fans are mounted in the front door to deliver cooling, and a digital temperature controller is provided. This displays the temperature inside the rack and has two independent signal controls that can be used to trigger an alarm and initiate secondary ventilation if necessary. Stand: 4O73

D-Cerno, a digital entr y-level conference system for discussion applications is said to offer ‘digital sound quality, shielded from mobile phone interference and a fail-safe operation thanks to built-in patent-pending redundancy features’. New to the market is the touch-button operation, which simplifies cleaning because there are no gaps around the button where dirt and bacteria can accumulate, says Televic. As this type of system is often accidentally left on for hours or days after a meeting, Televic has also added an eco-mode that automatically switches the system to standby, reducing power consumption. Has ISE come at a good time for the AV and electronic systems integration industry? Absolutely, the sophisticated professional AV installation market was previously underserved by the older established European tradeshow selection. In a fast-growing market and technology sector, the timing of ISE serves us well to promote our products and solutions to the international markets. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? We see key developments in products that improve audio performance whilst making the installers life more effective and efficient as paramount and appealing. For example, ceiling

loudspeakers are a staple product for most contractors, but with Community’s new Distributed Design Series ceiling loudspeakers we have been able to introduce versatile assist features that make the installation process easier, faster and safer – bringing real developments and benefits for contractors. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? With our focus on innovative, higher quality systems, ISE has been chosen for the European launch of our Distributed Design Series ceiling loudspeakers. Delegates can see firsthand the advances we’ve brought to the sector and can learn about our free ceiling system design software. Stand: 11E82

An opportunity to explore the future

David Davies reports that the AVnu Alliance signals a heightened level of collaboration between audio manufacturers

ISE represents an opportunity for manufacturers and integrators to truly research and understand the best ways to deliver content to consumers

Behold the era of ‘co-operatition’ C n any area of business, there is a natural reservation about talking to your competitors. For one thing, such conversations can often be the starting point for unhelpful rumours, but above and beyond that, the sense of operating in isolation – and against everybody else out there – can be a fundamental spur to creativity and an important contributor to corporate identity. But in truth, no company is an island, and certainly not in contemporary pro-audio. The notion of a one-brand, through-project solution is under pressure as more and more customers – both in the live performance and installation markets – seek to address their own, often highly specific requirements with a ‘mix-and-match’ approach that takes the best equipment from a variety of manufacturers. ‘Brand loyalty’ is still a term with genuine currency, but these days it’s likely to be accompanied by an ease and familiarity with multiple brands. Framed in this context, proprietary communications technologies can appear to be at odds with the will of the consumer. Moreover, with full-scale audio/video networking on the horizon, the momentum behind open standard, easily integrated solutions is bound to intensify. To put it diplomatically, proaudio hasn’t always been the most fertile ground for collabora-

I

The networking revolution is doing more than changing the topography of audio systems – it’s shifting the successful business model towards interoperability tion, but now many of its leading lights are working together with a variety of other technology developers under the auspices of the AVnu Alliance – an organisation set up to promote and support standardisation for the emerging Audio-Video Bridging (AVB) networking standards. Founded in June 2009 by five ‘Promoter Members’ – Broadcom Corporation, Cisco Systems, Harman International, Intel Corporation and Xilinx – the alliance has attracted a further 18 supporters in as many months, including Meyer Sound, Peavey/MediaMatrix, Sennheiser, Shure and Yamaha. “I have been very, very happy with the openness of the all the members that have joined the AVnu Alliance,” says Lee Minich, president of Lab X Technologies and chair of the AVnu Alliance Marketing Workgroup.

“There has been plenty of discussion and interaction. I think that, in part, it comes from the fact that as an industry we are realising that technology is advancing so fast, and that what our end-customers are expecting is developing so quickly, that we have to leverage [solutions] that are much bigger than any one company could bear from a development expense perspective. “For whatever reason, proaudio has [historically] had a strong NIH (Not Invented Here) mentality; even in networking we saw that with a proliferation of proprietary protocols. But I think that a lot of people have realised that creating islands isn’t the way to help their business, much less the industry,” Minich adds. For AVnu, the new approach has come to be known as “co-operatition – a mixture of cooperation and competition,” Minich explains. “ It’s been happening for decades in other industries, where you might have dire competitors that battle on a daily basis for market share, but who understand that if they can’t have common ground in which to add value, they all lose out.” With further membership announcements pending, the AVnu Alliance’s capacity to help shape the networking debate – not to mention a more collaborative atmosphere across pro-AV – is set fair for further expansion. www.avnu.org

“As an industry we are realising that technology is advancing so fast...”

oming so soon after the close of 2010, much of our mindset heading into ISE is looking towards continued growth and the promise of opportunity in the new year. Commitment to innovation, despite the economic uncertainty of recent years, has brought a lot of exciting changes to the market, and NuVo is eager to share our most recent additions, as well as take in what the rest of the industry has to offer. What I believe has sustained businesses through the difficult climate, and will propel them forward towards the future, is an industry-wide revolution of streaming media. The current trend – and one that I believe will truly be it for the foreseeable future – is offering new, more simplified and accessible ways, to bring the entire expanse of the world’s available content right into an individual’s life. Often this requires no more than the

touch of a finger. This concept is alluring for everyone, and with the explosion of providers for the globe’s content, it’s a crucial point. ISE allows the groundwork for incredible opportunity: for manufacturers and integrators to truly research and understand all that is out there – and all that is coming soon, in terms of streaming media, and where it can come from, and how swiftly it can be reached. It’s critical to know who, what, and how is truly best, for the benefit of our customers and, consequently, our businesses. That is why being here at ISE is so invaluable: we get to see, in streaming media and all other aspects of the industry, what are the freshest and most innovative ideas around, and show to our peers and partners what we’ve come to proudly share. Nothing else fosters great ideas and future invention in quite the same way. Stand: 1L18

We ask: What do you identify as the most significant factors in the growth of ISE as an event?

“One of the things that has helped ISE is the breadth of the industries that they cover: the commercial and residential, AV and signage. [The event] covers a broad range of electronic systems. Also, the venue is nice and easy to get to.” Linus Wong, director, product marketing, Kaleidescape

“The ISE show has an excellent organisation and it was launched at the right moment, when other exhibitions didn’t see the promising future and the continuous growth of the integration market. It would be difficult to compete with ISE because it is a consolidated show nowadays in the market.” Juan Jose Vila, vice president product and marketing, Equipson

Vox Pop “ISE has done a phenomenal job of making this event a destination for attendees and exhibitors alike. Efforts such as an excellent venue at the RAI Amsterdam, terrific show organisation, and partnerships with CEDIA and InfoComm draw quality attendees, which makes the event attractive to high-profile manufacturers/ exhibitors for new product announcements and demonstrations. With this cycle in place, I anticipate the show will continue to see growth. John Benz, marketing manager, Furman (Panamax/Furman is exhibiting with SpeakerCraft) “ISE is an excellent opportunity for manufacturers to reach an EUwide audience in the integration and residential markets. We have seen a significant rise in interest for our products across Europe following our decision to stock equipment in Europe and exhibit at ISE. Rodger von Kries, vice president of Technomad

“All the professionals gather at ISE! Jerry Hung, vice CEO, BXB “From the exhibitors’ point of view, it can be a bit of a trial and error process when it comes to planning to attend an event. countries? This is often an essential consideration, particularly for ISE, as our attendees need overnight accommodation. It also has to be convenient to both visitors and exhibitors – not only the venue itself, but also the accessibility of the hosting city, the quality of the city, attractions of the city. “However we also have to strike a balance as the city’s attraction may also become a potential distraction. We need to ensure that people can move around the city without interrupting their will to visit the event. Alvis Kwok, channel manager overseas operations, Vtron “Continuity of venue and dates are important as these allow manufacturers to plan their strategy and, more important, for visitors to always know when and where the show will be. “It’s important to keep a good mix of associated market sectors as – while a visitor may be coming to look at, say, digital signage – they also have the opportunity to gain an insight into other allied areas that may in turn give them an additional revenue stream. “It’s also important to continue to attract buyers from all over the world by making it more a global event rather than a European one. David G Tyas, managing director, Ikon AVS and Nebula Audio

Dealers deserve vision and focus from manufacturers he AVC Group, comprised of the brands Elan Home Systems, Niles Audio, Xantech, Sunfire, and Aton, is making its European market debut at ISE 2011. We offer the worldwide custom installation market the opportunity to work with a single company that offers clearly differentiated brands that deliver high value added performance and reliability for every segment of the custom residential market. In short, we offer focused solutions that meet real market needs — exactly what ISE attendees are looking for this year more than ever before. The effects of the global economic recession linger, but they are lessening and we expect that 2011 will be a pivotal year in the turn-around of our industry. This market upswing comes at a time when manufacturers have finally begun to bring to market a new generation of affordably simple system solutions that allow CI dealers to offer consumers specific levels of multi-room and multi-function systems that are clearly differentiated by retail price points. I believe you will soon see every new home and many existing homes offer system solutions that are price appropriate for the price of the home. The higher you go in the home price, the greater the degree of home function inte-

T

gration and control. CI dealers are ready for this new era of growth. The dealers I talk to have learned the hard lessons of the last downturn. They know that retrofits are at least as important as new construction and that an expanding product and system portfolio of offerings is the key to growth. They are already in or moving into areas like alternative energy, energy management, aging in place, fibre optics, and low-voltage electricals. And they are looking beyond the traditional residential market to the commercial marketplace for new business growth. For dealers, the key is to partner with a manufacturer or group of manufacturers that have the scale, commitment to R&D, and, most importantly, vision and focus to guide them for the longterm. If dealers learned anything from this last downturn it is that they need a partner they can rely upon in troubled times so that they can go farther with them in good times. They need a partner that offers them differentiated brands that deliver superior levels of performance and value at every price point. That’s exactly what The AVC Group delivers — and what it will continue to deliver as we move forward with our accelerated long-term R&D programs. Stand 1L90

iPad shows virtual car Speech search Dutch companies Telecats and Arbor Media have joined forces to make spoken media searchable. Audio fragments are digitally recorded by Arbor Media and then offered to Telecats, which is capable of making a large selection of conferences and debates searchable, selected by subject, speaker name and even by conference key words, using Spoken Language Technology (SLT). “If this technology is used in order to make audiovisual recordings of ‘political’ gatherings searchable, it can contribute to a stronger political involvement of the citizens,” claimed Ron Smits, general manager of Arbor Media. “Making the fragments searchable is the biggest challenge. Without adequate metadata it is not possible to quickly find the right information in audiovisual data in a proper way.” The companies previously joined forces on a project for the Radboud University in Nijmegen and for several Dutch courts. Mazda of North America celebrated the 40th anniversary of its arrival in the US market, with an audiovisual extravaganza. Corporate Magic of Dallas was charged with the production and creative direction of the event and in turn commissioned PK Pictures of Nashville to design the media and technology for a visual centrepiece. The technology consisted of a

Dataton Watchout-driven system with four streams of HD video projection, shaped and precisionmapped to a real-life Mazda 6 and a forced-perspective road that angled down from the party’s ballroom ceiling to the floor. The content could be called up randomly using the new Aux Timeline feature in Watchout. “This got really interesting when we patched an existing iPhone app to allow us to control the show via a WiFi-connected iPad from out on the show floor,” said Greg Page, CEO of PK Pictures. “Mazda executives were literally grabbing the iPad out of our hands to show guests how to change the car colour, turn on the headlights and wipers, or change the visual environment from, say, desert highway to city street.” Stand: 3B102

Premier Mounts New mounts designed for the Apple iPad are on show today. These mounts, such as the IPM-100, IPM-200 and the IPM-300, provide a hands-free experience. Designed to securely hold the iPad, the IPM-100 mounting frame easily fastens to any of Premier Mounts’ wall or table mounts using an industry standard VESA 100mm x 100mm mounting pattern. It is designed for use in the hospitality and corporate markets where it is important to block guests and employees from accessing power controls and the iPad's connector port. The IPM-200 frame, which only attaches to each corner of the iPad, is designed to allow full access to the dock connector port, volume control, rotation lock and power button. Stand: 4N34

Scalable conferencing While videoconferencing is well established, there is still a sizeable number of companies who have not made the investment. For those who are uncertain about exactly how much infrastructure they will need, LifeSize has introduced Bridge 2200. The 16-port product, the company explains, enables organisations to take a building-block approach, scaling their videoconferencing deployments as needed

and allowing them to easily add capacity as the demand for HD video conferencing grows. Traditional solutions require IT decision-makers to predict their capacity needs far into the future, says the company, a counterintuitive process that can be difficult to defend when resources are limited and may result in unused capacity. The new bridge or multipoint control unit (MCU) allows IT administrators to take advantage of existing network architectures and put the bridge anywhere they have extra capacity, minimising the need to make large bandwidth or other network infrastructure investments to fit their videoconferencing needs. With frame segments made of extruded aluminum, the FocalPoint is said to be rigid and durable, while remaining lightweight. There are no hinges, allowing quick and easy assembly. The modular segments attach end-to-end with Draper’s DuraLoop bungees and nylon pull-tabs, creating a flat, selfcentring viewing surface. Stand: 1F40

MMD Philips Public Displays

Cost-effective DS alternative The Smart Insert concept from MMD Philips Public Displays was first introduced at ISE 2010 and the company returns this year to celebrate its success, with the solution having been adopted by, among others, AOpen, BrightSign and Advantech. The Smart Insert solution, at the back of the display, permits a small form-factor PC or media device to be inserted, giving system integrators operational flexibility and better serviceability when compared with all-in-one digital signage displays, says the company. The Smart Insert was developed by Philips to simply upgrade, service

and swap professional PCs without the need to replace the complete display. Upgrades are often necessary when a user changes to another content management system or to a more advanced resolution or content format. It also allows digital signage users to start with a simple, ‘low-end’ PC and then upgrade easily as the requirement becomes more sophisticated – but retaining the monitor, making it a cost-effective solution. Philips Public Signage points out that the Smart Insert solution is also invaluable if there is a fault with the PC driving the display. Stand: 12C80

It features a 16channel CCTV power supply (350VA) that delivers 24VAC or 28VAC to as many as 16 CCTV cameras. Stand: 2A39

Custom cables and connectors R S Elettronica Italian company R S Elettronica is showing its range of Thender brand cables and connectors. The company is highlighting two of its HDMI male connectors, both of which allow cables of any length to be constructed – easing installation, especially where cabling needs to be pulled through confined spaces that preclude the pre-attachment of the connector. The first connector uses solder, employing a technique that means that soldering does not touch the connector’s pins: rather, soldering is to a PCB. The connector has a metal shell, and is plated in 24k gold. A crimping version is also available: wires are inserted in the supports, and the supplied crimping tool crimps and cuts in a single operation. It is, says the company, both simple and fast – especially for those unable or unwilling to use solder. From its cable range, the company is demonstrating its speaker

cable, which is certified to UL-CL3 and is suitable for use in walls and ceilings.

Power cables also feature in the Thender range. The company manufactures custom cables using high quality Schuko-IEC connectors and Thender cables. Customers can choose the connectors, cabling and sleeving desired. Thender cables of almost any type – HDMI, speaker, audio and so on – can also be custom-made. Stand: 4R32

Exhibitor View Michel Rudelle, EMEA regional manager, Apantac

Multiviewers & conferencing solutions For ISE 2011, Pantac is focusing on its latest series of multiviewers and a highly scalable systems for the conferencing and meetings market SE 2011 is an ideal event to introduce new technology and products to the European professional AV market, and is a good way to help gauge the health of the market going forward. In our market segment for multi-image display processors, there is a strong demand for multiviewers that accept a mix of many signal types/formats for visual monitoring. We also continue to see trends in products that propose different and more innovative approaches for existing technology needs. With the advent of low-cost flatpanel displays and their picture quality and resolution improving, more and more facilities see the benefit of multiviewers and the advantages they bring to viewing video and computer signals on a single display. We also see a push towards more energy efficient products. Multiviewers help reduce the amount of energy required, an improvement on legacy solutions that require many small monitors that suck energy. Our customers also need a wide range of options when it comes to the type of content they are viewing, and a variety of tools to supplement the images, such as clocks, logos, audio montoring/ metering etc. We have designed our new Tahoma-DE series with our customers in mind, delivering a versatile, flexible, and optionrich multiviewer solution. The Tahoma-DE-4 and DE-8 are truly universal input multiviewers. They accept DVI, HDMI with HDCP management, VGA, composite, analogue component, SD SDI, HD SDI and 3G SDI signals. They share all the advanced features of Apantac's broadcast multiviewer series, such as built-in extenders over

Cat5e/6 for the digital outputs and on-screen display capabilities with 'skin technology'. This allows borders, labels and fonts, audio meters, analogue and digital clocks and logos etc to be customised. Each source window is independently adjustable from very small to full screen, while embedded audio meters can be decoded from the HDMI or the SDI inputs and displayed. Discrete analogue or AES audio inputs can also be accepted. A simple AXP control protocol over RS-232 and IP allows recall of any of the 30 presets, control of clocks, changes to label text, and more as standard. There are various ways to control the DE multiviewers: GPI contacts, frontpanel buttons, free software panels based on the AXP protocol and some hardware panels. Last but not least, the picture processing quality is impressive, whatever the window's size. Our customers are also looking for new and different approaches for their existing needs. For the conference/ meeting AV market, we are introducing Conference Connect, which is designed for events with multiple presenters. Conference Connect allows from two to 120 participants with their laptops to share a single projector or large display within a 300m range. It allows participants to switch their laptop VGA and audio output to the projector or display with a single click of a button. This cost-effective and sizable solution takes away the cumbersome and time-consuming approach where each participant in the meeting has to connect the projector cable to their laptop for their presentation and in turn adjust image resolutions. APart The latest addition to APart Audio’s range of convectioncooled amplifiers is Champ-3D – a three-channel, fully programmable digital amplifier. Making its debut at ISE 2011, Champ-3D is said to be ideal for use in environments where a mix of affordability, silent operation and superior musical qualities is paramount, such as cafes and music bars. Champ-3D comes ready for use with four Mask8 top speakers and two Sub2400 subwoofers. The unit has built-in DSP, while a speaker configuration wizard makes it possible to select other APart top speakers and subwoofers. It will be possible to add future speaker models through an RS-232 upload of software updates posted on the web. Other elements of the Champ-3D specification include three operating modes (fully locked on/off, volume only, or fully accessible), Class D Hypex amplifier components and – thanks to the convectioncooled design – no unwanted ventilator noise or need for a regular cleanout procedure. Q&A Soeren Kraemmergaard, global sales manager, dnp denmark

Has ISE come at a good time for the AV and electronic systems integration industry? It has certainly come at a good time for us, as we are consistently introducing new products. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? The biggest threats are from other technologies. LCD and plasma displays are increasing in size, but when you compare image quality and true cost of ownership we don’t see them as threats. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? Featured on our various Partner stands, dnp screens will demonstrate not only their inherent image superiority but also their green credentials and energyefficiency – providing a much more cost-beneficial solution.
