InfoComm ‘thrilled’ by growth of ISE InfoComm is spending time and effort on the ‘virtual classroom’ Terry Friesenborg (pictured), senior VP of international development at ISE joint sponsor InfoComm, characterises ISE’s increasing ability to attract a comparable number of attendees to the US InfoComm show as “thrilling. Contemplating this week’s predicted registration total of 34,000, Friesenborg said that there was a clear “parallel between the growth of our |membership in Europe and the development of ISE during the last few years. Hosted buyer programme success Although every visitor is obviously aware of ISE as one of the world’s most successful AV events, many may be surprised to discover how proactive the ISE organisation is in bringing business to Amsterdam. An example is ISE’s ‘hosted buyer’ programme which helps exhibitors to draw prospective customers and guide them around the show. “This is the second time we’ve sponsored the programme – and, given the success of our sponsorship last year, it was an easy decision to increase our involvement this year, said Epson’s Yvonne Myhill. “ISE is now a very significant show – it now attracts a worldwide audience, rather than a European audience – and it generates a real buzz, which the hosted buyer programme takes advantage of. “The quality of the delegates is high – they’re almost all decision makers or decision influencers. It’s just too
good an opportunity to miss, Myhill continued. “If anything, we would like to see the programme extended in terms of the countries it covers. Panasonic is equally enthusiastic. “This is the first time we’ve been involved, said Lee Harrison, senior account manager at Panasonic. “We see it as giving us the opportunity to get much closer to key customers, to get to understand them better – and to support them better. Anything which helps us build better customer relationships is obviously very valuable. “It’s a great opportunity to talk with a key group of potential customers who share similar interests, said James Belso, UK channel sales manager for Christie. “The group included very high-calibre people. Sponsoring the programme is definitely something we’ll do again.
AVnu Alliance expands at ISE AVB (Audio/Video Bridging) has been one of pro-AV’s hottest topics over the past 18 months, thanks in no small part to the efforts of AVB-supporting group the AVnu Alliance. The industry association already counts the likes of Avid, Barco, Harman, Sennheiser, Lab X Technologies and Meyer Sound among its members, and now it has been joined by TC Group – parent company of leading audio brands TC Electronic, Tannoy, Lab.gruppen, Lake and TC Helicon. Publicising the move at ISE, TC Group said that its specialist
division, TC Applied Technologies, was already at work on technologies intended to be in line with proposed AVB standards. Anders Fauerskov, CEO of TC Group, commented: “TC Group is driven by a pursuit to deliver fully flexible product solutions at the best possible value. As a consequence, open standards are the only way forward, and AVB is the logical answer for us. In joining the AVnu Alliance, we look forward to the opportunity to work together with the other alliance partners in driving the AVB standard forward. Stand: 6H136

Stand space at ISE 2011 is 17% greater than at last year’s event
First-time exhibitor flurry for CEDIA HTE No fewer than 13 first-time exhibitors have signed up to appear at the next edition of CEDIA’s Home Technology Event, which will take place at the ExCel Centre, London, in late June. Alltrade, Bespoke Telecoms, Brother UK, DPL Electrical, EuroNetworks, Global Cellular, Technoloje and Zennio are among those set to take part in the event for the first time. Speaking to The ISE Daily, CEDIA Region 1 executive director Wendy Griffiths said that, at present, 55% of stand space had been sold for the show – a figure that is “in line with expectations” at this point in the year. Special elements planned for the 2011 event include the Hub Seminar Theatre – a centrally located arena with ‘big-name speakers’ – and the 3D Feature Zone. There will also be opportunities for manufacturers and distributors to host installer workshops, as well as Room Sets, which are dedicated spaces allowing companies to showcase their latest products in front of custom installers, architects and designers. InfoComm Future Trends: It’s about pixels Two of the presentations at InfoComm’s Future Trends Summit – which took place at the RAI earlier this week – looked at the challenges involved in putting pixels on screen and moving them around the network. John Dye of Avistar focused on the three key challenges facing videoconferencing: interoperability and standards; integrating web-based conferencing with videoconferencing; and scaling videoconferencing in the enterprise. Dye described the coming together of web-based conferencing with traditional videoconferencing as potentially a “tumultuous collision”, with web conferencing appearing to operate without standards. “Why can’t my $250k videoconferencing suite talk to WebEx?” was a question he felt was on many IT managers’ minds. He predicted that web conferencing will lose out to Unified Communications (UC). For Dye, the critical issue will be the one of managing network bandwidth as video becomes more prevalent, and he foresaw the development of new generations of ‘network aware’ applications

More pixels, he said, were necessary for large displays – he expects 4K resolution to become commonplace – but “irrelevant” for smaller displays. Having reviewed a number of nascent display technologies, and noted the huge investment it would take to bring them to prime time, Simpson concluded that only OLED appeared to have all the performance, economic and manufacturability characteristics required for widespread successful application, and referred to Mitsubishi’s tile-based approach. Even OLED, though, still has questions to answer about its likely lifetime, he concluded.

Ceymsa Ceymsa Audiovisual is showcasing more than 10 additions to its range at this year’s ISE. The company is displaying electrical LCD lift system LCDBOSS in two different models, one that comes with a 17in screen and one that can be embedded in a user’s own screen. Also on show is the new Euroline electrical screen, which features a matte white cloth and white case, along with the new Glassvision and Duovision screens for rear projection. Meanwhile, with the new I800 and I1000 digital signage systems, Ceymsa says that users will be able ‘to reach the highest point in DOOH’. Stand: 3C128
Sign of creative control Although it only occupies a relatively modest part of the AMX stand, digital signage is big business for the company, which counts communications giant O2 as one of its more significant customers. But visitors may wonder why a company with as enviable track record in control systems as AMX appears to have a crude thermometer on its stand. Turn it and the answer becomes clear: AMX offers signage that can change content depending on the temperature. “People look at return on investment and they look at the substan-
tial amount of money they may be spending on posters,” said Jonathan Mangnall (above), UK sales director AMX. “We offer the ability to change signage freely, based on any number of criteria – it might be temperature but it could also be time of day, or noise levels in-store.” Stand: 2C50
NuVo Technologies Visitors are invited to leave a business card at the NuVo stand and then return at 14:30 to be present for the draw. Tuesday’s winner of a BC Rich guitar was Neil Badcock (left) of UK Jetset, pictured here with NuVo’s Desirée Webster and Steve Horton.

InfoComm ‘thrilled’ by ISE growth > Continued from page 1 potential members, as well as providing an educational delivery system.” In addition to the inaugural ISE edition of the organisation’s Future Trends summit, InfoComm has contributed to a 36-seminar programme examining subjects such as audio DSP and IP integration. While these sessions were very much live and in real-time, InfoComm is currently spending considerable time and effort to bring
much of its educational programme into a ‘virtual classroom’ concept. “We found that it can be very difficult, especially in these economically challenging times, to take someone out of the workforce and lose their productivity for three working days,” said Friesenborg, adding that the new approach allows users “to take 1.5 hours of their schedule a couple of times a week” over an extended timeframe. Meanwhile, work on the organisation’s standards and best practices programmes is continuing.

TOA European fire alarm component standard EN 54 is a preoccupation of many involved with the installation community at present, so it’s not surprising that TOA Electronics Europe’s MD, Toshio Sakata (seen here with Daniel Griffin from testing organisation Intertek) looks so delighted to have received EN 54-24 system loudspeaker certification for multiple TOA products. Along with the PC-2369EN, whose certification is pictured here, the company now has EN 54-24 for horn and box speaker products BS-678BSB, BS-678BSW, CS-64BS, CS-154BS and SC-615BS. Prior to this announcement, TOA had already become the first manufacturer with a total solution for EN 54-certified voice evacuation systems. All EN 54 standards are due to become effective across EU member states in March. Stand: 3C100

Niko shows control
Niko has launched Home Control, said to use a minimum of energy and with an eco-display that shows how much energy residents are using at any time. “Thanks to Niko’s commitment to innovative solutions, both installers and residents get an installation that is very user-friendly and flexible,” said Niko managing director Peter Watteeuw.
Residents can choose from various modules to suit their lifestyle and needs. For instance, as a security system Niko Home Control provides presence simulation and movement sensors, whereas its zone heating controls allow individual rooms to have independent settings at different times of the day. “Thanks to our ecological functions such as the eco-display and the eco-button, residents can consciously deal with their energy consumption,” said Watteeuw. “Studies show that this allows them to save up to 10% on energy.” While, technically, the compact Niko Home Control modules help to save space within an electrical cabinet, the system also integrates with existing Niko switch designs, allowing stylish and contemporary interiors. Displays you can bend Nanolumens Exhibiting in conjunction with sales and rental company PSCo, Nanolumens produces a flexible digital LED display that can be curved in all four directions, flexed around walls and wrapped around columns, with a 48in bend radius. The screen is lightweight and thin, which means it can be hung from ceilings with very little infrastructure, says the manufacturer. They can be used in locations where heavy flat-panel displays are impractical. The current model is a 112in screen for indoor or outdoor use. The LED components are placed on polymer substrates, with flexible electronics to allow the screens to bend. In the longer term the products will be able to be made to any size or shape, says the exhibitor.
“Nanolumens is one of the most exciting technologies that I have seen for years,” said Stuart Holmes, managing director of PSCo. “We are delighted to be supporting the team in Europe and to be forging new verticals for LED, taking advantage of its flexible and lightweight qualities. This means it can be positioned in locations that would have previously been out of bounds for flat screen displays. At just 40kg, this is a product which keeps infrastructure costs to a minimum, while delivering a very bright, high quality display,” he added. PSCo offers a unique suite of accessories, including a flexible rail system. The 6mm pixel pitch enables the screen to display Full HD resolution content. Stand: 1K113

What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? Opportunities! Looking at develop-
ment of visual displays within some of the key market segments we target, we see a great deal of emerging business ahead. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? We have an exciting and industry leading line-up of products – and this year we offer more free product and market training than ever before – right on our stand in Hall 1! Stand: 1J27
Digital goes compact Soundcraft The new Soundcraft Si Compact Series of digital consoles is designed to deliver high-end performance and advanced features at ‘a very affordable price level’. It is apparently aimed at a broad range of professional users in live sound. Keith Watson, Harman marketing director for mixers, said: “We’ve had a fantastic reaction to the 24 fader model launched at PLASA in September. Being 19in rack mounted, the 16 is our response to massive demand from our
clients in live sound, including houses of worship, installed systems, theatres and corporate events.” With DSP functions in a smallfootprint chassis, the Si Compact range provides up to 40 inputs in a choice of three frame sizes. Motorised faders with patented Soundcraft FaderGlow operate on two layers, but the main difference from similarly priced mixers is the provision of a full encoder set for all the functions on a channel, from input gain through to EQ, dynamics and bus controls, says the manufacturer. In addition, the new digital desks offer four separate Lexicon effects processors with dedicated buses as well as the main mixes, along with BSS graphic EQ for every bus. Stand: 1H116
The HMP200 Hyper Media Player from SpinetiX is a high-end digital signage media player capable of publishing information, video, pictures and text in 1080p full HD to any screen or display device. Ultra-compact, lightweight and with a maximum power consumption of only 7W, The HMP200 can be concealed behind a screen, installed with ‘zero config’ network integration, and then forgotten about, says SpinetiX. Advantages claimed for the HMP200 are that having no moving parts means higher reliability; the device has no vulnerability to PC viruses or operating system issues, thus increasing uptime; and SpinetiX offers a lifetime warranty. Installation-dedicated true line array
New EVA (Expandable Vertical Array) series loudspeakers from Electro-Voice are easily assembled into full-bandwidth line arrays with well-defined coverage – all without the rigging and drive complexities of conventional concert line array products. EVA is a modular system, with four two-way models available to provide a range of directivities from 90° x 6° to 120° x 20°. Modules may be combined in various configurations to precisely provide the required coverage for many applications. Clean lines and unique internal rigging hardware mean EVA arrays look as good as they sound. EVA uses advanced transducer and crossover technologies to provide impressive low-frequency response without compromising mid-range quality. Passive crossovers and 16-Ohm impedance allow two EVA arrays to be driven by a single, two-channel amplifier of sufficient output power.

3D @ ISE is a new feature in Hall 11, with the area based around the 3D Theatre
Reach out with 3D Interview with Lutz MĂśhr of 3DCC, the 3D Competence Centre
which means it needs to restore trust in the euro.
Please explain your involvement with ISE 2011. I am an independent consultant, mostly in the field of S3D (stereoscopic 3D) visualisation technologies, and my role at ISE 2011 is to organise the presentation programme for the 3D Theatre as well as helping to promote the 3D Pavilion. I’ve been working with ISE since last year.
What do you think will be the ‘star’ technologies of 2011? Of course, there will be many star technologies in the coming year. From my point of view, 2011 could well be the year that 3D – or, as I call it, S3D – really begins to establish itself in the mainstream. It can touch all AV markets, because it brings so many practical advantages in so many applications – whether digital signage, videoconferencing, simulation/training or design/architecture. S3D can also reach out to users at an emotional level in a way that 2D images can’t. But – and it’s a big ‘but’ – it can only do this and be effective if it’s deployed and managed in the right way. There has been much written and said about 3D, but I’d strongly encourage all ISE visitors to see it in action for themselves and make up their own minds. That’s what the 3D Pavilion and the 3D Theatre are there for – to give industry professionals the opportunity to experience 3D in action, and make up their own minds. I’m certain they’ll be impressed. www.s3d.eu
How do you see the ISE market faring in the EMEA region in 2011? I think there are good signs that things will develop positively over the coming year. The economy in Germany – which is one of the main European markets, and very influential in terms of the overall picture – appears to be becoming stable again. It would be good to think that this is an indicator of how things will develop in other territories. What do you think will be the key external factors affecting the market this year? For me, the key question is about the euro. Trust is a key element in financial markets, and the euro has not yet won back the international trust that is vital. We need the stable financial base that comes from a stable, respected cur rency. Europe needs international trade –

Support for 3D Theatre Unsurprisingly, the 3D Theatre is playing to full houses as ISE visitors take the opportunity to find out more about a technology that could prove pivotal in the AV market. Topics under discussion range from 3D content creation to the glasses used to view that content. Two key participants are Fraunhofer and Volfoni. “We have technologies and solutions that cover a large part of the 3D chain from creation through capture, from encoding to transmission, said Ralf Tanger of Fraunhofer, noting that encoding is an area of specific expertise for his or-
ganisation. He is also discussing with visitors Fraunhofer’s Stereoscopic Analyzer – known as STAN – which helps in the capture of 3D content, combining real-time image analysis with intelligent visualisation tools and an intuitive graphics interface to assist cameramen and production staff when shooting. Paris-based Volfoni is using ISE to launch the company’s Activeyes glasses. They are active and passive, and so are suitable whatever the 3D technology. Fraunhofer: Stand 9B129 Volfoni: Stand 9B143

Projector creates 3D A manufacturer of presentation products has introduced what is said to be 2D-to-3D conversion technology, with three digital projectors: the D512-3D, D536-3D and the D5383D. The new units take 2D content and convert it to 3D without the use of an external conversion box. The first projectors to use this technology take 2D DVD and Bluray player content via HDMI. The three projectors can also display 3D content from 720p/1080i at 50/60Hz and 1080p at 24Hz from 3D Blu-ray players or other 3D sources. The three models feature DLP and BrilliantColor technologies for bright, digital images, says the manufacturer. Add in high-efficiency lamps that last up to 4,000 hours in economy mode, and the
three projectors are ‘an amazing lightweight, presentation solution’, Vivitek claims. “This latest technology represents a breakthrough for both the consumer and Vivitek,” said Holger Graef f, general manager EMEA, at Vivitek. “We’ve packed a lot of features and technologies into the D512-3D, D536-3D and D538-3D projectors, all within a compact design. “Now, with the 2D-to-3D builtin conversion, consumers are able to enjoy 3D content without needing to purchase or set up an external box. These projectors offer great image quality, a variety of connections for multiple video sources, and they are 3D-ready to ensure nextgeneration content can be enjoyed now.” Stand: 5N92

n projectors, LEDs substantially reduce the cost of ownership because they need replacing far less frequently. In displays, they are helping to create images that are more highly saturated and with better contrast ratio. But, when it comes to illumination, that’s not what people are talking about first. Mostly, they’re talking about how LEDs are environmentally superior, with no mercury to dispose of and with substantially lower energy usage. And while videoconferencing is plainly a way of reducing travel budgets, it is also widely noted as reducing corporate carbon footprints too. Is the AV industry truly going green? “Questions about environmental impact have become a standard part of almost every tender process,” says Richard Cobbold, chairman of The Screen, an independent body that seeks to develop the digital signage industry. “However, the questions are mostly about energy consumption: we need to move to a wider understanding of what ‘green’ really means in terms of lifetime, servicing, upgrading and recycling.” Paul Gray, director of TV market research at DisplaySearch, agrees. “I think that end-of-life will become the next – and greatest – challenge,” he says. “This isn’t an area where we’ve done any primary research,” says Bob Raikes, managing director of Meko, “but my feeling is that, as yet, most end users aren’t prepared

While manufacturers have seized on the green credentials of LED technology – those credentials also bring lower cost of ownership to pay a premium for ‘going green’. It becomes a differentiator only when all other things are equal.” A company that has done some research in this area is Futuresource. “When we’ve talked to large corporate organisations, IT managers have explained that green credentials coincidentally fit nicely with ‘lean’ credentials,” notes the company’s Mike Fisher. But while manufacturers have seized on the green credentials of LED technology – for example – implicit (and often explicit) in those credentials are the concomitant lower cost of ownership. Consuming less power isn’t just good for the planet – it’s good for the pocket. For widespread deployments such as digital signage, as
Bob Raikes points out, there are compelling reasons to reduce power consumption regardless of any ‘green’ considerations. But that’s fine by Richard Cobbold. “For things to really change, they have to be good for everybody. Reduced cost, competitive advantage and better for the world are all part of a virtuous circle.” So: is the industry doing enough? “At one level, the industry can only make what customers want and what they are allowed to sell,” says Richard Cobbold. “However, that doesn’t mean that the industry can’t be more proactive and start to drive trends as well. That’s what The Screen is doing with 12Steps – our set of principles to help manufacturers
and customers make informed decisions about what products and what companies to work with when it comes to sustainability in its widest application.” A cynic might suggest that, when it comes to green AV, it’s self-interest, rather than altruism, that is the dominant force at work here – whether user or manufacturer. On the other hand, perhaps it is disingenuous to look at the motivation behind the apparent greening of the AV industry: the fact that AV technology continues to consume less energy and use fewer harmful substances is, by definition, a good thing – regardless of why it does so – and is, as such, to be welcomed.
“Questions about environmental impact are a standard part of almost every tender process”
Newly developed classroom and training room AV solutions are being shown by iKON AVS, which is exhibiting in the UK Pavilion this week. iKON AVS specialises in control and connectivity products. The new SC-Amp is billed as being ideal for small and medium size rooms, and combines projector control, a power amplifier and laptop connection points in a robust metal panel. Calibre UK
Science Museum projects new image A new section at London’s Science Museum features Calibre UK’s PremierViewProHD Image Warp Processors, supplied by systems integrator Sarner. “At the time we tendered for the project, there was no solution on the market capable of achieving a seamless vertical and horizontal video wall with 180° interaction,” explained Chris Hawes, head of engineering at Sarner. The interactive exhibit, Who Am I? – which explores brain science, genetics and what makes us who we are – first opened in 2000 but has now been overhauled to reflect the latest scientific research. At the heart of the new-look exhibit is Me3, a multi-element interactive experience, which is divided into Central Exhibit, Threshold, and Backdrop zones.
Calibre image processing has been deployed for the Threshold zone, which forms a dramatic entrance to the gallery featuring moving coloured particles that are constantly projected onto the floor of a long ‘catwalk’. “Fortunately, by connecting PremierViewProHD Image Warp Processors from Calibre to each of the projectors, we were able to warp the projected images and blend them back into shape to create a single, continuous image,” said Hawes. “Visitors are able to walk within 1.9m of the wall without affecting the projection at all.” Five Panasonic 6000 series projectors are positioned out-of-sight and driven at angles to deliver a seamless imaging moving along a horizontal and then a vertical surface. Haivision
CoolSign joins line-up A wide range of products is on show on the Haivision stand, including the first outing of the CoolSign digital signage product range – which can scale all the way from smaller installations to large-scale global networks – under the banner of its new owners. Elsewhere on its stand, the company is promoting its Torpedo family of DVB-to-IP gateways, which enable digital broadcasts to be delivered over IP networks without the
need to re-encode the content. The Torpedo takes a digital RF DVB signal from a satellite or terrestrial antenna, extracts and filters the MPEG-2 transport stream packets, and retransmits them to multiple multicast or unicast UDP targets via an Ethernet interface. DVB-T2 support is also said to be imminent. Stand: 10L136
ACT fast on skis For skiers, the Four Hills Tournament is the most anticipated annual ski jumping series each year – and for this year’s competition, exhibitor ACT developed a 31m long, full colour LED display. Today, ACT is showcasing its capability to create custom screens of this type. In fact, the company says that it has over 1,000 different LED signs, and a selection of these is on show. An LED video staircase is also on display, as well as a demonstration of a number of modules, each with a different pixel pitch, so that visitors can not only see how pitch affects quality, but also compare the latest SMD 3-in-1 devices with 1in-1 solutions. Stand: 12E70
Information display specialist Infinitus is following the launch last year of its 46in and 52in imotion information kiosks with the launch at ISE of a double-sided landscape version of its 65in product. Its double-sided characteristics effectively allow 360° viewing of on-screen information. What marks out the new products is availability of a new HELP version. HELP stands for Human Emergency Life Point – which means that the units come equipped with an automatic external defibrillator. Already widely installed in Budapest, the HELP units are designed to help save lives: research has shown, says the company, that survival of a heart attack is only 5% without immediate defibrillation, but typically 75% when defibrillation is used immediately. The HELP system was created and is operated by Budapest-based Adlife Media Point. Stand: 12A82
DISE
DISE’s new DS solution There are plenty of small organisations who can benefit from everything digital signage offers – but on a single screen. That's the market targeted by the latest version of Dise LS, getting its first major public showing. According to DISE, there are numerous differences between the new LS version and the previous one, and the more eye-catching of them are being presented at regular intervals in live demonstrations – showing the complete process from hardware setup to first presentation – throughout the show. Users looking for single-screen digital signage solutions often have
less technical expertise or confidence – ease of use, says DISE, is key. According to the company, the LS package contains all the editing power of the Dise Composer – an editor for dynamic information with drag-and-drop support of media files and objects – combined with high quality playback using Dise Replay. Stand: 12C74
SVS-8 lands in Asia Jupiter Systems Digital video playout specialist Jupiter Systems is using ISE to announce the availability of its SVS8 streaming video systems in Asia. SVS-8 is a compact, hardwarebased solution for decoding and displaying digital video streams on a Jupiter display wall. It can also work in standalone applications without a Jupiter display wall processor. The SVS-8 supports a mixture of camera, NVR and DVR vendors, including installations

digital signage News Analysis Ian McMurray tracks the trend for digital signage to address consumers through their mobile devices
Why digital signage is ever more mobile Digital signage is increasingly pervasive but never more so than when it can summon consumers’ attention from their handbags or coat pockets ccording to reports before ISE, the Intel stand is to be themed as The Connected Store, featuring a range of technologies from mobile phone interaction at the ‘front end’ to remote management at the ‘back end’ – and plenty in between. Of most interest to digital signage industry players is likely to be the integration of mobile devices, which will be key to the future success of digital out-of-
A
home (DooH), says Oliver Schwede of Invidis Consulting. “Digital signage would be giving away a huge part of its potential if it does not embrace mobile technology,” Schwede suggests. “As communication becomes more and more personalised, it has to use all the devices customers use in their daily life. Digital signage is just one part of the communications mix, and so it has to provide a mechanism to communicate with nearby mobile
devices like smart phones and iPads.” It’s not just about personal mobility though. ISE visitors coming to the show via Amsterdam’s tram system will have been struck by the widespread deployment of digital signage, with its classic mix of advertising and news. Passengers are the kind of captive audience that digital signage operators love, whether they’re actually travelling or just waiting to travel in an airport lounge, for example. A key word is, of course, ‘pervasive’ – how digital signage can be deployed wherever we are and whatever we’re doing. Just behind ‘pervasive’ is ‘convergence’ – the coming together of digital signage and mobile marketing. “Digital signage is the only dynamic medium which is able to extend campaigns to the point of sale – so it must provide a connection to mobile technology in order to provide a cross channel mechanism,” says Schwede. “This is necessary to personalise campaigns and to follow the customer. Mobile marketing will develop much faster than digital signage as no additional infrastructure has to be built.” A third word to add to ‘pervasive’ and ‘convergence’ is ‘engagement’. With the widespread proliferation of digital signage, it
runs the risk of becoming an unremarked part of the landscape that attracts no more attention than a passing bus. For many in the industry, the next step forward is interactivity – the ability to engage individual consumers with targeted offerings. Already, there are digital signage systems with built-in face recognition capabilities that ‘tell’ the system whether the consumer in front of the screen is male or female, and their approximate age – using the profile to deliver only pertinent information. Mobile technology, however, has the potential to take this a step further. For it to succeed, though, digital signage developers need to go through the same learning curve as TV broadcasters as they increasingly deliver content to PCs and mobile devices. “Content needs to be separated from the output mechanism,” says Schwede. “It’s a question of software design; but in order to play out content on multiple different devices, there needs to be a strict separation between content and rendering.” That’s one of the keys to mobile, interactive signage. Another, says Schwede, will be the widespread availability of Near Field Communication technology in mobile phones which, he says, will rapidly displace Bluetooth and QR Codes. Digital signage: coming soon to a pocket near you.
“Digital signage is the only dynamic medium which is able to extend campaigns to the point of sale – so it must provide a connection to mobile technology”
CoroGen Pay-per-play digital signage CMS CoroGen is highlighting the availability of its MediaGroom content management system for the SpinetiX HMP100 digital signage player. MediaGroom recognises that, as digital signage becomes more pervasive, the way in which content is created and managed needs to change, because users will not necessarily be IT-literate: the company says users need no technical, graphical or organisational skills to benefit from MediaGroom. MediaGroom is web-based and needs only a browser in order to create and manage content: CoroGen says that MediaGroom will be intuitive to anyone who has ever used a browser. Stand: 12A79
GestureTek The Cube camera-projector system from GestureTek is seeing wide deployment, particularly among retail outlets, according to the company. It requires no technician to install and is ready to run as soon as it’s taken out of the box. One North American clothing chain has installed more than 250 Cubes following the results of a pilot programme, which suggested a sales increase in outlets where the Cube was installed as part of a store redesign, according to GestureTek. A leading consumer appliance company is using the Cube interactive floor projection system to launch a new brand in more than 50 stores. Stand: 3A92

We ask: What are the most significant developments in digital signage at the moment?
“Naturally we are very excited about the new Diamond Vision OLED screen and the possibilities that this will create for digital signage and out-of-home display. Digital signage is now a familiar part of our environment, and I think the market is ready for the next stage in its evolution. “I believe we will see sharp growth in the use of large-format displays over the next five years,
particularly those that offer the chance to create more inventive displays than the conventional 4:3 or 16:9 formats. I think also we will see a rise in the number of interactive technologies in use, such as touch-screen, gesture recognition, gender recognition and the use of mobile devices.” Peter van Dijk, business development manager, Mitsubishi Electric Europe (Benelux)
We ask: Which market sectors within the overall EMEA integrated systems market are the strongest performers at the moment – and why is that?
“The products that enable the merging of the digital signage and IPTV worlds are currently the strongest market for us, especially our MC-SCREEN HD soft-
ware encoder. The application here is to send full HD content and perfect high-resolution images from digital signage players to cost-effective IPTV set-top boxes. This is very economical when many displays need to show the same content.” Karl-Heinz Wenisch, CTO, Teracue IPTV Systems
Unitech Systems
Signage stands firm Presenting a complete range of flatpanel floor stands for domestic and professional use, Unitech Systems says that styling and utility, in combination with high quality materials and a wide range of accessories are the main characteristics of its FPFS series of flat-panel stands. The FPFS V6, V5, V15 and V17, with inox height-adjustable telescopic tubes, feature accessories such as plexiglass shelves for equipment, wheels, video conference mounts, PC mounts, speaker
mounts and so on. Said to be easy to assemble and disassemble, the stands are height adjustable via only two screws and need minimum storage space. Also on show are flat-panel floor stands specifically designed for digital signage applications. The FPFS V20, V22 and DS Totem are appropriate for panel mounting in portrait or landscape mode, for one or two panels and have multiple optional accessories. Stand: 4O73
CleverLCD launch Seeing its European launch, LCD Touch Fusion is an interactive display offering three products in one for the classroom or meeting room. At its core is a choice of a 42in or 55in interactive dual-touch LCD powered by a PC running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. This is fitted to a wheeled base, which can tilt and raise, turning the LCD from table to interactive screen. When used as an interactive table, students can collaborate, compete and cooperate, with the large screen area maximising the number of students who can participate.
As an interactive easel, the CleverLCD Touch Fusion can be lowered to ease access for students with disabilities, while as an interactive display, the system can be raised to a height for comfortable viewing for all the class. Target price for the CleverLCD Touch Fusion 42in is €5,500 and €6,600 for the 55in, which the developer suggests should appeal to schools who have found the cost of dedicated interactive tables hard to justify. Players on the move Cayin The SMP-WEB4, a fanless, webbased digital signage player, can integrate with 3G and GPS technology to provide mobile and placebased solutions. Players installed in moving vehicles can play back content based on location. Administrators can also locate each player on Google Maps and instantly see their connection status. Cayin says flexibility is a major strengths of the SMPWEB4. As a web-based digital signage player, it can present multimedia content created by web languages, such as HTML, JavaScript and Flash. It can also extend to integrate with external digital devices, databases and web servers. The SMP-WEB4 supports most popular image file formats and AV codecs, with HD video playback.
Not limited to stored video, it can play live video from a T V tuner, DVD player, or USB camera). Content can be updated manually by USB flash drive (offline), FTP, and Network Neighborhood. Cayin’s CMS
server can also update the player’s content automatically via a LAN or the internet, based on a pre-set schedule. Stand: 12A95
Mitsubishi Electric Since revealing its prototype product in 2010, Mitsubishi Electric’s OLED large format scalable display has attracted world-wide interest. At ISE 2011, the company is showcasing the latest model, Diamond Vision OLED, which is described as the world’s only commercially available large-screen OLED display. OLED displays are commonplace in small screen applications and mobile devices. However, the active matrix (AMOLED) technology employed in these devices is comparatively complex to manufacture and not a practical proposition for larger format displays. By drawing on its 30-year experience of large screen systems, Mitsubishi Electric has developed a unique passive matrix (PMOLED) technology that is designed for large screens. The characteristics of Diamond Vision OLED make it suitable for use in relatively brightly lit areas such as commercial facilities, stations and airports. Diamond Vision OLED offers wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles of approximately 80°. At 1,200cd/m2, the screen delivers around three times the light output of an average LCD and approximately double the contrast of a comparable LED screen. Stand: 2A24

We ask: What evidence are you seeing of a demand for green solutions within the industry?
“People across the industry are becoming aware of their individual and collective environmental responsibilities. You only have to look at the increasing number of requests for environmental policies within tenders to realise that the green agenda is becoming a significant driver for a lot of customers. As a manufacturer of unified control solutions, we are uniquely placed to help make a real difference by facilitating intelligent energy management. “At AMX, we are pioneering ways of allowing users to monitor, manage and control the power consumption of audiovisual and IT devices. Our new NetLinx PDU, for example, offers an innovative power management solution which controls and monitors, at rack-level, the energy consumption of each connected component and restricts power to any or all devices when not in use. “Our Resource Management Suite (RMS) allows for facility-wide control by networking multimedia and facility operation equipment into one energy efficient and costeffective solution. Using the full reporting capabilities of the system, users can gain an unrivalled understanding of equipment, resource and energy usage, which can then be used to ensure that everything is running to optimum operating efficiency. “Automation can also be activated based on a range of system conditions; turning lights and equipment on or off based on the occupancy of a room, for example, as well as facilitating daylight harvesting. It’s easy to change people’s behavior, and help conserve the world’s resources, when you only need to push a button.” Kevin Morrison, managing director, AMX Europe “Energy efficient systems and the ability to monitor, and therefore manage, energy consumption is key. We see the demand being driven by end-user (especially universities, home owners etc) and we have kept pace by developing hardware and software to deliver solutions for this need.” Robin van Meeuwen, vice president of sales and marketing, Crestron
“A simple audit of the typical living room will tell you that in many residences, higher-efficiency lighting methods, including CFLs, are firmly entrenched. In many homes CFLs have replaced incandescents completely. Consumers have also effectively completed the process of recycling their older CRT televisions for plasmas, LCDs and now LEDs – many are on their third or fourth generation. “All these dramatic changes in living and entertainment styles have put new demands on the technologies which control them, specifically infra-red which is the backbone of audio/video component and system management. Xantech has been very busy reinventing the state-of-the-art in IR control to say well ahead of the challenges in today’s market and from tomorrow’s technologies.” Graham Hallett, president, Xantech “A focus on solutions that minimise impact on the environment in terms of energy consumption, but still capable of high performance: AV technology migrating to the FM world for building management services (BMS) tools and applications; BMS control via integrated AV control systems such as Crestron, AMX and others; LCD and LED technology replacing plasmas and projectors, which require less energy consumption, less power, heat and cooling; and the obvious push toward videoconference technology in general to reduce travel and lessen a company’s carbon footprint.” Phil Breitschadel, director of EMEA sales, Verrex
The Digimic digital discussion system from Brähler ICS has firmware updates. The developments are intended to improve communication efficiency and coexistence with other devices in the same frequency band. The upgrade includes automatic detection of the central control unit; listing of speakers and devices; battery status indicators on the fly for each individual delegate unit; management of up to four monitors simultaneously and the export and import of name lists. Brähler says the flexibility of the system is huge when it comes to using different wireless and wired devices, even mixed within a system.
The company points out that this offers significant advantages to rental companies, which need to respond to clients’ needs. Up to five systems can work wirelessly in parallel without interference. They can be used either with the application software, as a stand-alone system, or in hands-free voice operating mode. The number of delegate units can be extended with a power supply, which is also a refresher for the data signals. Stand: 3D120
New mics for ceiling Sennheiser Modular white microphones for ceiling installation and a new entrylevel series of speakers’ microphones are showing today. Some of the well-known installed sound microphones from Sennheiser are now available in white for the first time. Unitech Systems is demonstrating its range of flat panel table lifts. The FPLTV2-500 lift hides panels from 40in to 50in in a horizontal position inside an item of furniture such as a boardroom table or coffee table, meaning that a smaller vertical space is necessary than if the panel
were stored in its vertical position. In operation – which is said to be silent – the FPLTV2-500 swivels the TV or display through 90° and then rises by 500mm for viewing. Unitech says that it produces more than 20 new mounting products each year. Stand: 4O73
Adamson European operation expanded Canadian-based loudspeaker manufacturer Adamson Systems Engineering is expanding its presence in Europe with the addition of two new employees to its European headquarters, which are based in Hamburg. As Adamson expanded its European operations, it became obvious that direct sales and support would be best handled in Germany and Austria. “Most of our major competitors have offices or their own representatives in Germany,” explained Jochen Sommer, director of European operations. “As a country, we have a strong economy, and our GDP per capita is very impressive. The potential is clear. In addition to our German needs, we are also on the verge of unveiling Project Energia. This will be an unparalleled release for our firm. Our new generation of technology is exciting and forward looking to say the least.” Stand: 6I150

news Televic Conference
iCOS fuses media and GUI for voting iCOS is described as an interactive conference system that fuses multimedia, touch-screen interfacing and Televic conference systems. It is said to be ideal for community councils, national parliaments or corporations that aim at turning their discussion rooms ‘into a prestigious yet intuitive working environment’.
“iCOS offers users elaborate voting possibilities, overcoming the limitations of hardware voting systems that have a fixed number of buttons,” said Kristoff Henry, Televic product manager. “iCOS is ideal for international meetings as each individual delegate can select the language of the user interface. Also meeting agendas can be prepared in multiple languages and viewed by each participant in the language of choice.” The screen distribution function allows a delegate to share the view on their screen with other delegates. In many applications this eliminates the need for large screen projection or plasma screens for information sharing, suggests the manufacturer. Stand: 3A120
Managed service TV Arbor Media Many of Arbor Media’s customers use the LogDepot system to record and monitor TV channels and, they all have to implement the same infrastructure. This means servers onsite, maintenance on every server and a hefty investment. That’s why Arbor added a new option to LogDepot. The company now provides LogDepot functionality as a hosted service via internet or dedicated networks. Its office is equipped with satellite reception equipment and has a dark fibre connection with the local datacentre, so that the available bandwidth is practically unlimited. Apart from broad connections to
the internet, the infrastructure offers a dedicated network with guaranteed bandwidth to many datacenters in the Netherlands and in main European cities, such as London, Brussels and Frankfurt. Recording will take place in original satellite quality and in a low bitrate proxy format for convenient browsing, while data storage will t a ke place in two different locations for maximum security. Peerless Industries
Wall mounts get ISE double debut This ISE sees the launch of two wall mounts from Peerless – one primarily aimed at residential installations and the other for signage applications. The MM746PU motorised flat panel mount enables the user to position a screen at the perfect angle. The manufacturer notes that this is particularly important for the best experience with 3D TVs, where the optimal viewing angle is relatively narrow. The remote control pans a screen through 40º (left to right) and the mount also features two programmable memory settings. The product has an RS-232 connection for communication with automation systems such as Crestron and Nevo. Like the rest of the
Slimline range, this mount has a profile of less than 35mm from the wall in the closed position. To complement the growing prevalence of outdoor digital signage, Peerless has announced a range of environmental mounting solutions. There is a choice of universal wall, ceiling and pedestal mounts with screen adaptor plates that are capable of supporting up to 91kg, with tilt settings to 15Âş. Each product goes through the same coating process used to protect metal parts from corrosion in the vehicle industry, followed by a fused epoxy powder coating that is resistant to scratching and damage from flying debris. All connection hardware is made of stainless steel. Stand: 11H65
New amps from BB Baldwin Boxall Three amplifiers have been introduced by Baldwin Boxall at ISE. The BVV050D VoIP dual 50W amplifier has been developed in conjunction with one of Baldwin Boxall’s customers – Archean Technologies – and is already proving popular in France where Archean is based. The BVV050D is essentially a combination of Baldwin Boxall’s BV050Q amplifier and Archean Technologies’ VoIP products, providing two audio IP channels and line surveillance with an integral processor for local management. By enabling broadcast of data and voice simultaneously – without any loss of quality, even over several
hundred kilometres – the company claims to provide good flexibility for networked systems. news Exhibitor View Paul Starkey, president, Elan Home Systems
Not the Jetsons yet but it’s close Elan Home Systems has brought its g! Series home control system – designed to address security, climate, lighting, media and more – to ISE e at Elan Home Systems are very excited about the New Year underway and about being here at ISE 2011. Worldwide deliveries of the complete Elan g! Series home control system, with international language support, is now well underway – and it couldn’t be happening at a better time. Worldwide consumers are increasingly demanding more centralised control over the appliances and functions inside their homes and apartments. This trend is being fuelled by the phenomenal and growing success of the iPhone and iPad and other multi-function control mobile devices. This demand is increasing just as manufacturers are proving they can leverage IP technology into increasingly affordable and modular systems that allow consumers to gradually invest in complete home control systems – on their schedule and within their budgets! In addition, streaming content from the Cloud grows richer by the day. Televisions are becoming the smart centerpiece in the home. Core automation standards like EIB (KNK) now allow many manufacturers’ lighting, security, and thermostats to work on a common bus. Meanwhile, the pocket and briefcase devices that allow us to be mobile and connected are now commonplace user devices in the home. Combine all of this with more wireless solutions to address the large existing home market and it becomes very easy to see that home control and automation are rapidly making their way to the mainstream. The consumer’s infatuation with electronics continues to
W
flourish even in a pressured economy as we all learn to communicate, work, play and relax differently. New ways of easing our lifestyles emerge seemingly daily. The world simply changes and electronics play a key role in this change. Witness the key drivers we listed as evidence.
“The user experience is critical” With these many drivers, what is really important is how the user will interact with such systems. This is where the user experience becomes critically important. The experience must be transparently simple and uniform across multiple interfaces. Consistent graphics, navigation, local language, and customisable user preferences must be incorporated into a system that is easy to install, easy to operate, and costeffective to upgrade over time. Those manufacturers that can deliver all of these benefits at a compelling price are going to enjoy significant growth over the next several years. We believe the Elan g! Series is unique in its ability to deliver all of these features and benefits, from a single-room solution that controls the television and music system to a whole-home automation system that controls temperature, lighting, security, and other household appliances. Home dwellers across the world, in every form of construction, are seeing a future rich with technology. We may not yet be living in the Age of the Jetsons, but we’re getting close! Stand: 1L90

Reasons to be cheerful The past 12 months has seen a continuation of the investment in staff, R&D and production facilities at IAG ast year was our first year exhibiting at ISE and frankly we have been looking forward to it for the past 12 months; it has quickly become something of a highlight in our first quarter. 2010 was a huge success for us at ISE and as a whole: last year’s show saw us win a major award and forge strong bonds with new partners throughout our portfolio of brands. IAG is in an enviable position both at present and going forward. The past 12 months has seen a continuation of the investment in staff, R&D and production facilities that has enabled IAG to become such a dominant force in loudspeaker and electronics manufacturing. At a time when many manufacturers were delaying their plans and waiting for the industry to regenerate, we at IAG were continuing to push our ambitious expansion plans. Fortunately, we were not as hard hit as many of our competitors during the financial crisis, which enabled us to put focus into our future plans. Our strength during such a tough period was helped by our wellpositioned brands, product lines and our trusted global distribution network. For SurgeX, the past 12 months has revolved around the expansion of our distribution network. Coverage is spreading
L
and we have added some excellent channels in key markets. We are working with top-class distribution partners that fill us with confidence. We have faith that our current infrastructure will generate a level of global success and market share similar to that seen in the US domestic market. We are beginning to see SurgeX International product specified and installed in prestigious venues and institutions worldwide. Our R&D resources in the USA and China are currently creating new product offerings that will enable SurgeX to enjoy even greater penetration within the global market place. Wharfedale Pro has historically been one of our most successful brands and last year was no exception – in fact, a record year for us – and I am confident that 2011 will be a similar success story. Our performance in 2010 was an amazing achievement considering the marketplace. Our record business levels were due in no small part to introducing new lines while reinforcing core products that stay true to our brand values and philosophy. We now have nearly 100 distributors across the world, making us a very resilient company, enabling us to fight through tough times in established markets while nurturing developing markets to promote growth. Vox Pop We ask: Which territories within the overall EMEA integrated systems market are the strongest performers at the moment – and why is that?
“CYP and our partners have a worldwide sales presence, with the CYP brand bringing valueadded sales throughout the EMEA integrated systems market. The past 12 months has seen strong incremental business throughout continental Europe, with regions such as Germany, The Netherlands, and Spain making notable advances in terms of brand penetration and overall market share. I feel the quality of distributor partners and the level of effort and support they can provide in the market is the key to our success, and long may it continue. We are planning to use ISE 2011 as platform to expand our distribution channels further into the EMEA territory.” Barbara Winslade, managing director, CYP “If you are interested in strong territories, take a look at Shenzhen, China. Due to the central Chinese government policy towards special economic regions, the Shenzhen government has placed strategic importance on the LED industry, making it one of the future pillar industries, and has laid down a well-devel-
oped chain-like network for the industry. Shenzhen and its peripheral regions have attracted and housed 80% LED-related enterprises in China, which has built up a solid foundation for the industry in a short time. At the same time, a highly efficient labour force, relatively cheap production costs, humid weather suitable for the anti-static electricity requirement of the LED industry, proximity to Hong Kong and therefore also the convenience for the visits, study and purchasing by clients from all over the world, have all reinforced the strategic importance of this whole region.” Dennis Ren, vice president, Shenzhen Absen Industry Co “Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the strongest in the Middle East. They are oil rich and embarking on major investment in new hospitals, universities and transport. Qatar is also going to experience further investment due to becoming future World Cup Football hosts. The best performance in Europe remains UK and the Nordic, Danish and NL territories where there is an acceptance of digital signage and willingness to invest. These north European countries are in better financial shape than the southern.” Hugh Coghill-Smith, sales & marketing director, Onelan

Lift handles up to 70kg projectors While large projectors are usually installed permanently in an auditorium or conference centre, it is often the case that they need to be moved out of the way for certain events – which means that a projector lift is required. The Screenint SI-H projector lift series is designed to fulfill that function. Equipped with a heavy duty but silent motor, the lifts are said to be both fast and stable. For both the SI-H300 and SIH500, projectors up to a maximum weight of 70kg are supported, although the projector anchoring frame is controlled by two steel cables that are certified for a maximum load of 350kg each. A cable management system is provided to allow the safe and tidy connection of power and signal cables, and a safety device is built in to offer maximum security in the event of mechanism failure. The SI-H300 can optionally be operated via an RF remote control. The SI-H500 remote control allows the possibility to set an upper, intermediate and lower motor stop. The
intermediate stop can be set at the desired height for projection mode while the lower position can be set to be the service mode position. A remote control interface unit for control room systems is optionally available for the SI-H500. Stand: 4Q54

We ask: What evidence are you seeing of a demand for green solutions within the industry?
“We see this in the rising demand in our ENC and DEC compact video encoder and decoder units. Truly green solutions mean to us that customers are able to save money and resources. If customers won’t be able to save money by using green solutions we believe these won’t really be deployed. By offering an H264 HD encoder blade that consumes only 8W, needs no active cooling, which has no moving parts/fans, is very compact (6 units in 1RU, 21 units in 4RU) and which creates no noise, we serve this demand. The trend is going away from typical 1RU encoders that consume somewhere around 200-250W per HD channel.” Karl-Heinz Wenisch, CTO, Teracue IPTV Systems
“We are seeing a very noticeable demand for energy saving solutions and systems.” Martin Harding, managing director, BMB Electronics “From our side of the fence at Dana Innovations, not a great deal, as our products are not power hungry or typically used in energy-management applications, however we are conscious of using environmentally friendly manufacturing processes, materials and packaging. Vidyo
Videoconferencing The HD videoconferencing technology of US firm Vidyo is now being distributed by Comm-Tec and is on show here at ISE. “The Vidyo conferencing solutions captivate with convenience, user-optimised software, flexibility and high quality,” Carsten Steinecker, Director Business Development at Comm-Tec explained. “Vidyo’s patented technologies are based on the new H.264/Scalable Video Coding standard. This
dynamic image compression results in high reliability.” Steinecker continued: “Vidyo does not demand much of IP networks. Bandwidth variations are compensated by an adjustment of the refresh rate and the resolution. Unlike products of established providers there is no block construction. Existing video conference systems of all major providers can be integrated over a hardware gateway.” Stand: 2A50

Sub has a 21in cone Alcons Audio The new BQ211 subwoofer from Alcons Audio has been designed to extend t he low-frequency response of the company’s proribbon systems for permanent and portable applications. The new model is a doubletuned, quarter-wave loaded subwoofer system, designed for maximum, prolonged highimpact SPL performance from a comparatively small footprint, says the manufacturer. It contains a very large displacement 21in neodymium transducer with an all-carbon-fibre cone, for high-pressure loading, plus a force-
ventilated 5.3in voice-coil. The latter is mounted in a vented triple-spider frame and features optimised low resistance impedance and a port-vented magnet structure, to reduce power compression and prolong performance. The internally braced 15mm birch cabinet features double-tuned, high-pressure loading, through a rounded 236mm (9.3in) diameter low-tuned bass-reflex vent and wide, high-tuned quarter wave tunnel. This provides optimised breathing at high SPLs, yet keeping the total system weight to a minimum. Stand: 6K132
Premier Mounts has introduced the 12inx24in ceiling equipment storage GearBox. The GB-avstor4 is, according to the company, a great option for storing AV electronic components above a false ceiling to provide a clean, organised environment. Burmester Described by Burmester as probably the world’s most comprehensive, the 100 Phono Preamp’s speciality lies in converting analogue to digital, allowing, for example, a vinyl audio collection to be transferred to a server, hard drive or CD recorder. According to Burmester, the signal-tonoise ratio is at the highest possible level. The preamp offers two balanced phono inputs on XLRs which can be configured as MM or MC – thus supporting two different types of cartridge. The aim of Burmester’s new Classic Line Preamp 099 is to take account of the growing popularity of digital sources. It is equipped with six digital inputs – two RCA, three Torx and one USB – and as such, is said to be suitable for a multitude of digital sources. Stand: 5N122
Stealth Acoustics
Screen in the Sky Making a return at ISE 2011 is the Screen in the Sky audio demonstration. Stealth Acoustics says that the raised, 10ft-wide, 16:9 screen offers attendees the ability to experience professional sound radiating directly from the projection screen, using a quad-amplified implementation of Stealth Acoustics’ new LR4 invisible speaker technology. “No one has ever done this type of exhibit before…” said Steve Olszewski, Stealth’s vice president. “The screen exhibit is extremely cool to experience and proves that Stealth invisible speakers are not just aesthetic tricks, but real, high-end speakers that exceed the capabilities
of visible speakers while offering the creative outcomes that only invisibility can produce. “We’ve taken invisible speakers to an unprecedented level by demonstrating the professional audio results of quad amplification in a multichannel invisible theatre system,” Olszewski added. “Quad amplification speaker powering is typically only seen in high-end touring and fixed install venues but we believe world-class invisible sound should be available to anyone who wants it, including regular people with home theatres or dedicated listening spaces,” he continued. We ask: What are the drivers and inhibitors when it comes to the adoption of IP as an integration tool?
“IP is something pretty new for most custom AV installers as they have learned their business from other directions, mainly from all the bus systems. “IP is the coming market, in the control systems for the residential market as well. Those who are
familiar with IP drive it; those who are coming from other directions, most of them try inhibiting it. “But as I said, IP is the coming market, there will be no other way.” Erik von Krause, CEO of see & touch Marbella SA
We ask: What are the hottest trends in residential technology at the moment?
“Videoconferencing in general is hot, and there are rumblings of making it available on big screen TVs in your family room. But that probably is just a fad: people want videoconferencing everywhere – in their home and on the go – and they won’t settle for just having it
in their family room. “This consumer interest in videoconferencing is helping to drive desktop videoconferencing in the workplace – where Avistar, with its business-class desktop videoconferencing, offers exceptional quality and ease of use, features that consumer videoconferencing products can’t deliver.” Chris Lauwers, CTO, Avistar Communications Corporation

P18 is THX approved Procella Audio On show today from Procella Audio is a range of home, professional cinema and music loudspeakers. As well as the P815 biamplified L/C/R, the company has on show the P18 active subwoofer. Procella says that the THXapproved P18 produces enormous low frequency energy extending to the infrasonic, with extraordinary control, using dual professional 18in woofers with 4in voice coils. Driven by 700+700W of highefficiency Class D amplification in a sealed-box enclosure for optimum transient response, the subwoofer is capable of 132dB of output at 1m. Its shallow cabinet depth of 14.2in gives it a minimal footprint for in-room placement and allows it to be easily mounted in a baffle
wall. Onboard 28/56-bit ADI Sigma DSP processing tunes the subwoofer’s response and provides compensation for room boundary conditions. The THX-approved P8 L/C/R/ surround speaker uses a pro audio 8in woofer and high-frequency compression driver with Procella waveguide. Its Identical Voice crossover is said to achieve flat phase response and ultra-low group delay to provide optimised three-dimensional room response, assuring symmetrical coverage of high frequencies to all seats in small and large rooms alike. With a depth of less than 8in and a back baffle angled at 7.5°, the speaker is ideal for wall mounting, says Procella. Stand: 4Q70

Braided sleeving simplifies install TLS The DVI-I SignalManager active signal amplifier and DVI cable from TLS allow for signal transmission up to 100m without conversion, says the manufacturer. The DVI-I SignalManager supports digital signals up to a resolution of 1,920x1,200 at 60Hz as well as analogue signals (500MHz -3dB) and features a video bandwidth of 1.65Gbps. The signal amplifier also supports DDC and HDCP. The fire-retardant, halogen-free cable allows for optimum signal transfer over 25m without amplification in full HD. The copy protection HDCP, plus the AV.link protocol, are transmitted along with the video and audio. Stand: 3C88
A company that has been engineering and manufacturing a wide variety of braided sleeving products since 1963, Techflex is showcasing its newly announced Flexo F6. The company describes Flexo F6 as an innovative, semi-rigid, laterally split braided sleeving product designed to simplify the installation of braided sleeving over long wire or cable runs, and in wire harness applications that have multiple breakouts. The split construction of Flexo F6 allows installers unprecedented simplicity and speed of installation, says Techflex, with access to the wire bundle along the entire length of the application for addition or breakout of wires or components. The 25% edge overlap allows installation over inline splices and connectors, and the flexible sleeving will bend to a tight radius with-
out distorting or splitting open: unlike full rigid tubing types, according to the company, it will not impair or affect the flexibility of completed harnesses. Braided from PET filaments, Techflex says that Flexo F6 cuts easily with a hot knife, resists abrasion, tearing and damage from UV light and common chemicals, and will provide years of service. The PET braid is lightweight, quiet and flexible,
and the construction does not allow moisture to accumulate in the harness. It is available in a variety of diameters up to 5cm and in black, clear and orange colours. Stand: 5Q128
Unorthodox acoustics solved Electro-Voice
The largest Russian Orthodox church in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan has been renovated and equipped with a new sound system from Electro-Voice. One of the most awkward factors for the acoustic designers was the reverberation time, with RT60 beneath the central dome extending to several seconds, severely compromising intelligibility. As well as a fundamental improvement in the quality of the sound within the church itself, the client wanted a means of relaying services to the open area in front of the building. Furthermore, the system had to be easy to operate and the loudspeakers invisible to worshippers. With this in mind, the installation combined Electro-Voice EVID and ZX1i loudspeakers, governed by a NetMax N8000 controller, coupled with a selection of ElectroVoice microphones.
The reinforcement solution involved placing two ZX1i-90 loudspeakers in front of the altar and pairs of EV S-40 in the areas above and below the balcony, with EVID 4.2 loudspeakers providing excellent coverage in the nave. Outside the historic building, two ZX3-90PI W loudspeakers take up the relay, allowing the overspill congregation to participate in the service and hear what is being said inside. Stand: 3D130

Computing in the cloud
Any colour, but still green
Is ‘the cloud’ simply the evolution of information technology or a golden opportunity to rewire the means of production?
Litepanels offers speciality fixtures with infinite variability in colour temperature
n recent months, the AV industry has seen a rapid rise in the number of new or updated cloud-based products and services. While these types of products still count as a small portion of the overall AV market, InfoComm says that this trend should serve as a warning that a change is happening that will impact infrastructure design and system implementation.
I
factories used to house generators before the electricity grid lit up, so computing is moving out of individual premises to become a utility. In a rapidly growing industry reckoned by IDC to be worth $44.2bn by 2013, it is Google, Microsoft and Amazon that are expected to take the lion’s share. Only a handful will have the scale to offer everything for video-rich media and over time may become
The cloud is either a mundane evolution of information technology or a golden opportunity to rewire the means of production. Perhaps it is both. IT departments have been migrating back office functions to remote cloud-based hosts as cost-saving measures for several years, but during the recession its impact has accelerated and widened. On one level the cloud encompasses programs like Hotmail or Google Apps – personal desktop productivity aids that would previously have had to be installed on individual PCs and managed by the internal IT department. The same software as a service model (SaaS) is also applied to enterprise-level systems like customer relationship management (CRM), databases and messaging. A similar outsourced arrangement can be made for infrastructure like storage, bandwidth, servers – raw processing power. Take a simple analogy. Just as
the largest global utilities ever seen. From an infrastructure point of view, the biggest change in AV system design is that AV products need an Ethernet switch nearby. AV professionals have become IT and infrastructure experts so that customers can access cloud-based services over reliable, high bandwidth connections. According to Peter Aylett, CEDIA’s director of professional development, “Cloud content is fundamentally changing the architecture of systems that we are designing for home entertainment. Rather than simply giving customers access to their hundreds of CDs/DVDs in their homes, streaming content from the cloud gives our clients the ability to access millions of tracks. “From a system architecture point of view, this is removing the server from the home and putting it on the internet. “We have a way to go [in the UK] before internet reliability and
eing eco-friendly and cost effective is ever more a focus at the IS, as industries strive to lower their carbon footprints for the environment and their power bills for their bottom lines. Litepanels’ LED-based lighting is a major contributor to this effort. Prior to Litepanels’ pioneering development of LED technology for AV and motion picture/video production, LEDs were largely relegated to indicator lights on car dash panels and clock radios. Earlier generations of light fixtures, mostly tungsten and HMIbased, were not only energy hogs in their own right, but generated massive amounts of heat that needed to be dealt with through energy-intensive air conditioning. In contrast, Litepanels Emmywinning LED lighting blazed a trail towards greening the industry by providing broadcast-grade LED fixtures that use 1/10th the energy of legacy fixtures, yet generate no noticeable heat. Litepanels brought the further advantages of 100%-to-zero dimming with no noticeable change in colour temperature, and introduced fixtures with infinite variability in colour temperature from daylight to tungsten. As budgets come under increasing scrutiny and business decisions are made with more expedience, corporations worldwide are investing in telepresence and teleconferencing suites to cut travel costs and offer greater immediacy. And looking good and professional is of vital importance – a beautifully lit suite shines a positive and flattering light on the participants. With little or no effort, a Litepanels installation keeps the speakers cool – because there’s no heat – and looking good with soft wraparound light, just like that used in Hollywood production studios. It’s no wonder that vitally important venues from the White
B
House Press Briefing Room and the Pentagon to corporate HD teleconferencing suites have recognised the advantages of Litepanels HD-friendly light. What’s more, as telepresence and AV suites replace their existing lighting systems with Litepanels LED fixtures, the changeover is quickly paid for via reduced energy bills. Litepanels have led the way by patenting numerous LED-lighting advances and it is the further refinement of such technology that propels the industry forward. While for the first five years of operation, the company concentrated on soft lighting like the 1ftx1ft slimline fixtures that can tuck into the space of a ceiling panel, visitors to ISE will see that Litepanels is now introducing totally new technology in the Sola series of Fresnel fixtures. With the Sola series, the company meets the need for LED lighting capable of projecting light over longer distances, and provides the characteristic single shadow, focus-ability and controllability of a Fresnel fixture. Because Sola Fresnels generate no heat, they eliminate the heatinduced problems of conventional Fresnels, and also reduce the weight by up to 66%. Sola Fresnels provide long beam throw, focus from 70° to 10° and generate a characteristic single shadow – all of this while being lightweight and providing double the energy efficiency of an HMI Fresnel. And unlike HMI Fresnel fixtures, Litepanels’ Solas require no ballast and no restrike period. Like all Litepanels LED fixtures, the LEDs themselves can be expected to last more than 50,000 hours; a decade or more of normal operation. And of course, fewer lamp changes mean less maintenance and, therefore, lower overall operating costs. Stand: 11F51
Adrian Pennington finds out how the trend towards the SaaS model can be applied to rich media delivery
bandwidth means that we can totally rely on cloud content, especially for HD video, but as these improve, the days of having the majority of content stored locally are numbered.” The cloud is also reaching into the corporate, signage and education markets. Instead of a small percentage of networked classrooms at a university, for example, imagine an expansion of the number of interactive classrooms across an entire campus. In contrast to traditional IT procurement, cloud platforms are subscription-priced. A basic web server can be hired for as little as 10 cents an hour. With virtually no upfront costs companies or databased projects can start small and instantly scale according to need. This elasticity to expand and contract the core cost base is cloud computing’s most obvious benefit. Viewing the cloud as a shared managed environment also affords greater opportunities for remote collaboration, even on an international scale. It‘s possible to conceive of an entire virtual working environment with all the raw video and information for a project stored in the cloud and accessed via browsers from any location. “The hype of the cloud is that existing IT architectures and processes can be simply replaced,” argues Gartner analyst Tom Bittman. “The reality is that larger enterprises will continue to have an IT organisation that manages and deploys IT resources internally, some of which will be ‘private clouds’.” The cloud will bring both opportunity and change to technology and to business practices. Perhaps the skill of the AV professional will move toward helping customers find the one thing they want in the cloud or how to integrate multiple services and help customers search through it.

Vox Pop We ask: Which territories within the overall EMEA integrated systems market are the strongest performers at the moment – and why is that?
“Germany and the UK are the strongest performing countries within the EMEA region. Their economies are relatively strong compared to many of the other EMEA countries. In Germany and the UK, I have not seen any cutback in public and private spending on AV projects.” Steven E Mattingly, managing director, TV One “Germany has been by far the best performing EMEA territory in 2010, closely followed by other Northern European countries such as Belgium and Denmark. Southern Europe has generated a lot of enquiries and product interest, but this hasn’t translated into sales; the sales and marketing costs for Southern Europe have exceeded revenues, whereas Northern European activities have been moderately profitable. “For Calibre, Northern European sales have outperformed elsewhere for two reasons. Firstly, we are traditionally an OEM manufacturer, so our business levels are closely linked to the performance of other manufacturers in our sales territories; undoubtedly Northern European manufacturing is recovering much faster than
Southern Europe. “Secondly, we have seen an upturn in integration business. This is partly due to heavy investment in new products at more competitive prices but still with class-leading functionality and performance. This is also due to significant investment in sales and marketing efforts with a quadrupling of our tradeshow budget and the opening of a new sales office, particularly for sales of Calibrebranded products throughout the EMEA and Asia. We’ve done well recruiting new distributors in Europe who need something different to sell; something with a margin and something which their competitors don’t have.” Tim Brooksbank, Chairman, Calibre UK “We don’t have a special territory because our company is global and constant in all countries. “By proximity and by our reputation, Europe is a very important market because we have been in the market around 16 years and we always try to exceed people’s expectations. Besides, our customers have been quite faithful over all these years.” Juan Jose Vila, Equipson

Turkish railway factory installation
Entegre Electronics from Istanbul designed and installed a public address and voice evacuation system at the Turkish Railway Machines Industry (TÜDEMSAS) site, based around 50 hemi-directional loudspeakers from Bosch. They were installed in three buildings, suspended from the 15m ceilings with steel wires, and cover around 50,000m2. The public address and emergency evacuation system is controlled and managed from the factory’s head office and security centre. Business calls and emergency
announcements can be made from both locations. The security centre uses call stations with keypads. For the head office, Entegre designed PC-based call stations with a GUI that enables onscreen zone selection and both prerecorded messages and live speech in the selected areas. “The TÜDEMSAS factory is a very demanding environment,” said Serhat Kacar, project manager, Entegre Electronics. “With average ambient noise levels around 85dB, these loudspeakers are ideal. It’s also a dirty, dusty and hot environment, so the ruggedness of these speakers is vital.” Entegre also installed an access control system and CCTV solution from Bosch at the factory. TÜDEMSAS’s management apparently plans to install Bosch’s hemi-directional loudspeakers in two other factories in 2011. Stand: 2A70

Vox Pop We ask: Which market sectors within the overall EMEA integrated systems market are the strongest performers at the moment – and why is that?
“Customers are increasingly prioritising image quality; with the sharpest resolution, brightness, contrast and ratio. As a result, we’ve seen an increased demand for high resolution and wide-screen projectors. All of Canon’s XEED projectors use sRGB colour space to ensure the colours from different devices are identical and use unique LCOS technology to ensure that projected images have no lattice effects, and give the best possible colour reproduction. These are areas where LCD and one-chip DLP technology currently fall short.” Julian Rutland, visual communication product and solutions director, Canon Europe “All the traditional markets are performing strongly as the economies have picked up, however our DigitalMedia 8G technology is doing extremely well. There seems to be strong demand for a single wire, high-output network. DigitalMedia 8G delivers unprecedented ultrahigh speed and long distance transmission of all data, Ethernet and control, plus analogue and digital AV signals. There are still good opportunities in various sectors especially education, lighting, environment etc. Crestron has answers for all these requirements plus the entry-level end of the market with the Prodigy solution.” Robin van Meeuwen, vice president of sales and marketing, Crestron “Live events throughout 2010 were very strong, with many large scale projection systems being utilised for brand reinforcement at shows, shortterm tourism advertisements and sporting event visitor attractions.
“Building projection in particular has proved very popular, with many examples throughout the EMEA taking place, mostly one-totwo days in duration, but with highimpact and high-quality imagery tailored to the location and theme. “Visitor attractions continue to be a steady performer, boosted by the Shanghai World Expo 2010, which had many different types of large and small-scale video walls and projection screens. Some visitor attractions this year also benefited from a cyclic upgrade some years after the original installation, dramatically improving image quality.” Adam Neale, managing director, 7th Sense “Applications of combined fire and evacuation systems in medium to large buildings, and applications of building management systems in larger buildings to integrate voice evacuation into larger supervision and control systems, are showing more and more importance. The EN54 standards are a driving force for integration of voice evacuation and fire alarm systems. Of course, in general the trend for integration of as much functionality as possible into systems with just a single user interface has been ongoing for years already.” Martijn Van Overveld, product marketing manager PA, Bosch “Our distributors in Northern Europe in particular have been able to capitalise on this as specialist projects start to flow again, albeit slowly at present. Capital expenditure in areas such as simulation and entertainment are starting to happen again, but the public information (signage) market is presently driven by a race to zero as everyone tries to buy cheaper and cheaper, so that’s a market in which vendors are unable to make a margin. “There’s still likely to be commercial fallout as integrators fail due to thin margins and projects don’t deliver due to sub-standard equipment being used so as to save cost and be the lowest bidder. We’re keeping out of that market at present and concentrating on added value markets where our technological advantages still command a price premium.” Tim Brooksbank, chairman, Calibre UK

Mode-AL
Goniometric tilt unveiled Although screen mounts that use the screens’ own centre of gravity to counterbalance themselves are not new, what Mode-AL claims to have done elsewhere on its new mount represents a significant innovation. The company’s aim is to accommodate anything from a 24in to an 82in screen with exactly the same type of wall mounting system. The mount will be offered across Mode-AL’s whole range, including plasma stands and integrated furniture solutions. According to the manufacturer, all the specifier has to do is to select the type of variant and advise screen
make and model number so Mode-AL can preconfigure the mount
prior to dispatch. There are just three variants: portrait, landscape and VESA (smaller VESA screens 200x200 and below). The company claims that with the new mounts, professional installers can go from box to wall in only 15 minutes. Stand: 11D44

Sharing a stand with Syscomtec Distribution at this ISE software company Macnetix recently found itself supplying digital signage for a very unusual themed hotel. Described as the ‘first supermarket hotel in Germany’, the foodhotel Newied has a remodelled cash desk in reception, the chairs are redesigned shopping carts, and the guests can stay in the tea, cheese or beer room. The brief was to signpost public areas using IPTV-HD, as well as 115 rooms, with the topic rooms receiving special attention. “The software editIT/playIT cur-
rently controls 10 monitors that decorate the public area,” explained. Peter Grünhäuser, director of the food-hotel. “Five 32in screens that are installed at the reception – and in front of the seminar rooms – serve to welcome guests and display announcements for current events. The displays can also be used to present slide shows and image movies. The five other door monitors are door signs that display information about the events in the rooms. You do not have to be an IT professional to operate the software.” Stand: 1F17
Three functions, one box Gefen The newest volume levelling device from Gefen delivers three key functions in one box. The GefenTV Audio Amplifier with Volume Stabiliser can down-mix Dolby 5.1 audio to L/R analogue audio, amplify both channels at 25W and automatically stabilise volume levels to avoid the spikes and drops of inconsistent or ‘sub-par’ audio. Three audio inputs are provided:
two digital (S/PDIF, TOSlink) and one analogue L/R, with users switching between sources using an IR remote or a front-panel selector. The selected digital audio inputs are automatically converted to twochannel L/R audio using Dolby AC3 technology, then delivered with automatic volume stabilising, though this can be bypassed. At the entrance and hotel lobby sections of LG’s booth, the M4716T and M4214T, the company’s cutting-edge, highly adaptable touch displays, will be also on show. With an industryleading response time of 13.5ms, the M4716T can provide quick, easily controlled information that includes 3D imaging, making it ideal for outlets such as car dealerships.
Visitors will be able to see the exceptional control functions of LG’s displays in the retail shop zone. LG Digital Signage Solution works efficiently and seamlessly with various types of display and media player (PC), making it an integral component of LG’s packaged solutions. Included in this solution is LG’s SuperSign, a practical digital software optimized for small- and medium-sized businesses that makes it easy and quick to create content. With SuperSign, retail staff can focus on taking care of customers rather than worrying about how the shop signs are looking.
At the digital art gallery in the hotel lobby, visitors can enjoy media art installations on LG displays including 72-inch LED and 65-inch LCD screens. Thanks to its 6.9mm bezel – the slimmest on any 40 inch-plus display – the 47-inch LED 47WV30 will show a stunningly

At ISE2011, LG will be demonstrating all its digital displays and business solutions through simulations of real-life settings in a “resort” offering various services. The booth display will lead from a hotel lobby to a hotel room, a conference room, a subway station, an airport and a theater. By using such recreations of everyday scenes, LG is looking forward to showing how effective its digital signage products and business solutions are when it comes to delivering real, tangible benefits for businesses and their customers. Additionally, LG’s M3801S stretched monitor, on display at the transportation facility zone, delivers an extremely effective solution for airports, subway stations, bus stops or any other businesses that need wide displays in constricted spaces. The stretched monitors are ideal for advertising, or for providing passengers with useful information such as timetables. LG’s projectors, including 60-inch and 3D versions, will also be on show in the Theater Zone.
To Meet the Perfect Hotel TV and Video Conference Systems in the Hotel Zone In the booth’s “hotel room,” LG will be displaying its advanced, integrated Hotel TV solutions customized to different types of hotel. Just like real guests in LG-equipped hotels, visitors can use a remote control, fitted with Pro:Centric technology, to operate any multimedia devices in the hotel room. Pro:Centric also makes it possible to gain access to an array of useful information about hotel services, local travel information, weather and news on their TV or other
wireless devices. What’s more, LG’s Interactive TV lets guests check in or out and book room service with the touch of a few keys on their remote control. LG will also be unveiling two types of video conferencing systems in the conference room on the booth. The all-in one desk type VCS systems feature vivid screens and easy interfaces, while the room-type VCS boasts outstanding connectivity. LG VCS offers super-high definition video of 720HD, enabling realistic telepresence on a 24-inch high resolution LCD. In addition, with their high-performance built-in speakers and microphone, LG’s VCS let users feel as if they are actually sitting in the same room as everyone else in the conference. LG’s 65 inch LCD IWB and 60 inch PDP IWB, the ideal type of displays for business presentation and conference, will also be displayed at the wall of the conference zone.

Q&A
Christian Sokcevic, general manager of marketing & sales – Broadcast and Projector – Panasonic
The case for a carbon offset hrough investing in renewable energy projects, companies have the ability to start changing both technologies and attitudes, both of which will have tangible benefits on health and living standards in the long term. Since industry has historically been the worst polluter, we believe that manufacturers are obliged to take the lead, and demonstrate that business and environmental thinking are not mutually exclusive. It is unsurprising that there remains a certain degree of scepticism surrounding companies’ policies on sustainability. Organisations have undeniably painted themselves with a ‘green sheen’, aiming to reflect positively on their company’s image. However, aside from ticking boxes for corporate social responsibility and EU carbon reduction targets, we must remind ourselves that schemes such as carbon offsetting can, and do, have very positive effects on communities living in those regions where energy projects are being supported. Panasonic has the resources to make a big impact and is in a great position to extend this positive green philosophy to all our commercial partners and end customers. The fact remains that together we will be able to make a far greater impact than we ever could individually. It is for these reasons that green thinking has long been at
T
the core of Panasonic’s company vision. We outlined this in our Green Plan, and last year we reaffirmed our ambition to become the number one green innovation company in the electronics industry by 2018. To this end, we are supporting three carbon offset projects that have been accredited by the Gold Standard Foundation, the non-profit standards organisation that oversees the carbon offset industry. With these sorts of partnerships in place we are confident that companies can generate watertight and ethical propositions. The Offset for Life initiative for professional projectors allows customers to calculate their carbon footprint based on the number, and model, of projectors in operation, factoring in function and typical weekly usage. The method of calculation has been verified by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the results are an accurate representation of the CO2 generated during the active lifetime of a projector. Opting into the scheme, our customers purchase the carbon offset which Panasonic then invests in emission-reduction schemes in Turkey, China and Ghana on their behalf. We are confident that, together with our partner ClimateCare – which provides offsetting for all three of the UK’s main political parties – we can deliver a sound sustainability policy. Revox The Revox Re:sound I invisible speakers are intended to provide ‘complete freedom of design’. At only a few millimetres thick, the speakers can be concealed behind walls or ceilings, turning them into sound sources for public, commercial or residential applications. The size of the speakers has been set to the standard DIN dimensions used in dry wall construction, which means that they can be used instead of plasterboard. The speakers are installed in walls or ceilings and then subsequently painted or plastered over. Connection to special compact side room amplifiers from Revox – which have been optimally tuned to match the emission characteristics of the soundboard – is achieved with standard speaker cable. Has ISE come at a good time for the electronic media industry? Speaking from our own point of view, the market is stronger than ever and ISE provides a great forum for us to catch up with existing customers, or impress new ones. The lead factor right now seems to be creativity, with plenty of innovative projects planned or already happening. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? I see no threats really, apart from another global recession, which does not seem very likely at the moment. The momentum in our industry is very strong. Look at signage applications and multi-screen shows for TV shows and live events and
entertainment – not to mention fixed installations. I see very strong demand and new applications emerging all the time. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? We are demonstrating both our multi-display presentation system, Watchout, along with Pickup, our audio guide system. Our products are under constant development and our stand is staffed by experts, who are ready to show off all the latest features and provide feedback on project ideas. For newcomers, ISE is a great way to get acquainted with Dataton. For existing customers, ISE is the perfect forum for finding out even more about the features offered by Dataton products, and how to harness their potential. Stand: 3B102
Kaleidescape
Blu-ray server launched Kaleidescape is now shipping what is believed to be the industry’s first Blu-ray movie server. The Kaleidescape system stores exact copies of Blu-ray discs on its hard drives, says the developer. “The simplicity and elegance that we have achieved for watching Blu-ray movies required significant hardware and software innovation, legal analysis and user interface design, said Michael Malcolm, Kaleidescape’s founder, chairman and CEO. “My family and I enjoy the freedom to jump to a favourite scene in a movie or to any song in a concert, Malcolm added. “For the first time, all of our Blu-ray movies are literally at our fingertips, at any screen in our home. Kaleidescape describes its Movie Guide as ‘an unparalleled movie-watching experience’. High resolution cover art, combined with a brief synopsis of each film and many other details, is designed to make it entertaining for users to explore their collection. Video bookmarks and triggers
enable the system to start a film instantly and automatically adjust lighting, curtains and screen masking during playback. With over 145,000 titles, Kaleidescape’s exclusive Movie Guide is said to be the largest database of its kind. The new Modular Disc Vault completes the Kaleidescape Blu-ray movie server. With a capacity of 100 discs, it simplifies ownership by automating the import process. Any number of Modular Disc Vaults may be added to a system, but each must be connected to its own M-Class player. Any Kaleidescape System can be upgraded to be a Blu-ray movie server with the addition of an M-Class player and a Modular Disc Vault. Stand: 1K79

Big screen and videowall expert PSCo is launching a new LED technology from US manufacturer NanoLumens, which is not only flexible, but also thin, lightweight and efficient in its power consumption. Curved in convex or concave formations, flexed around walls and wrapped around large columns, the screen is lightweight and thin, which means it can be hung simply from ceilings, with very little infrastructure. PSCo is currently offering the technology as a 112in screen, weighing 41kg, designed for indoor and outdoor use. In the longer term the products will be able to be custom manufactured to any size or shape. “NanoLumens is one of the most exciting technologies that I have seen for years and can be positioned in locations that would have previously been out of bounds for flat-screen displays, commented Stuart Holmes, PSCo MD. In addition to its stand, d&b audiotechnik is occupying Room E103 throughout ISE for a busy programme of product demos. Today, these 45-minute sessions will take place at 10:00 and 14:45 (Listening), and 11:45 and 13:00 (Integration). d&b has augmented its long-established line of Black boxes with a new White range of integration loudspeakers. The new product line comprises two series: the xS and xA. The xSSeries comprises seven loudspeakers and three matching subwoofers whose names reflect the LF driver size employed. A wide range of sizes and output powers are available, but all models share the same ‘clean and unobtrusive industrial design’. The xA-Series, meanwhile, features four loudspeakers and two matching subwoofers – again, incorporating a clean design and names that mirror the LF driver size. Loudspeakers are driven by either the d&b D6 or D12 amplifiers, which provide two different power ranges. Dedicated subwoofers are available with both series. Stand: 6H134
