Switched on thinking There are still challenges yet to be overcome if Audio/Video Bridging (AVB) is to be implemented widely across multiple applications. That was a key message of the ‘Future of Audio Networking: Reality & Potential’ session, held on Monday as part of the Future Trends Summit and featuring a panel collated by PAMA (Professional Audio Manufacturers Alliance). AVB has emerged as a primary strand of the global networking debate. But while AVB-capable switches are available, implementation across applications remains the subject of considerable fine-tuning. “For certain applications you can deploy AVB now,” said session participant John McMahon, who is executive director, digital products at Meyer Sound. “Does it cover every base now? No. But we are on the roadmap.”

ISE 2013 bookings get off to a flying start Big brands reserve extra space as 2012 attendance passes the 40,000 mark Rebooking of exhibit space at ISE 2013 began yesterday, with a host of major brands increasing the size of their stands in comparison to their presence today. And at 15.00 hours yesterday, the attendance figure for ISE 2012 reached 40,146, making it the largest ISE event ever. Leading the pack of repeat exhibitors was Samsung, which enlarged the size of its ISE stand by 25% to exactly 1,000sqm. Other
major professional display companies ‘sizing up’ for 2013 include Sony, Sharp, Optoma and Digital
Projection – the last booking a stand almost three times the size. The trend was not confined to professional display, with Crestron, the AVC Group and Sennheiser all booking significantly larger stands compared to this year. “The fact that so many com panies have asked us to book additional space for 2013 after just one day of our 2012 show speaks volumes for the ability of ISE to drive business growth,” said Mike Blackman, managing director, Integrated Systems Events.“We are delighted that so many key com panies have demonstrated their support for our event.”
Get yourself Connect-ed ‘Connect with CEDIA’ – the programme through which new, prospective and existing members can discuss industry issues and find out more about the benefits of CEDIA membership – has been extended to take in a variety of venues across Europe. Once again, the event will visit Sheffield (22 March), Birmingham (19 April), Bristol (17 May), Newcastle (21 June), Edinburgh (19 July) and London (21 September) in
2012, but will also add Milan (22 March), Paris (26 April), Antwerp (24 May), Manchester (23 August) and Dublin (25 October). All attendees will receive a £55 CEDIA education voucher (maximum of one voucher per company). The success of the free-to-attend initiative was highlighted during a CEDIA press event hosted by Gary Lewis (pictured left) – a prime mover behind Surrey-based integrator Future Systems who became CEDIA Region
1 chair in October – and Region 2 chair Federico Bausone (right). Lewis and Bausone also highlighted the record number of entries – in excess of 100 – submitted for this year’s CEDIA Awards, which will take place on 20 April at Hampton Court Palace.

Making an important point: Ashton (right) with Bouqueniaux
Record attempt is child’s play The world’s biggest-ever collaborative artwork will be created using projec tion mapping in April, when London’s Buckingham Palace will be covered with children’s drawings. The project, Face Britain, will be spread over three or four nights. “We need to get to 25,000 to break the world record, but it is open to every child in the country, so we hope to get up to 50,000; but we’ve catered for a million,” so every child’s picture will be used, explained projection artist Ross Ashton of The Projection Studio, who was speaking at ISE’s Dynamic Events conference. Creative Technology is sponsoring the event and will provide the kit, which will probably use 14 20K projectors covering the front of the Palace. Ashton worked on the Palace before, using projection mapping to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee in 2002. Newspaper distribution sponsored by

InfoComm revamps solutions provider programme and logo InfoComm International is changing the name of its programme to recognise companies that invest in certification and education for their employees – and has issued a new logo. The AudioVisual Solutions Provider programme is again known by its original name, the Certified AudioVisual Solutions Provider programme. Other changes to the programme are scheduled for July. “In addition to a new logo, there will be a greater marketing investment to promote the designation to key purchasing and end-user communities, and a new Audiovisual Systems Performance Verification Checklist that
companies can elect to use,” explained Duffy Wilbert, CTS, CAE, senior vice president, InfoComm International.
The checklist is intended to provide owners, consultants and integrators with a comprehensive and singular source of tests to determine if a system achieves the client’s goals or objectives, and that it performs in accordance with the best practices of the industry. By providing this list to the audiovisual industry, InfoComm says it is establishing a set of guidelines to help industry professionals and their clients communicate effectively about system performance expectations. InfoComm plans to obtain ANSI accreditation of the Checklist this year. At that time, the Checklist may be modified for current best practices.

news And then there were nine… Christie Boardrooms, higher education facilities and houses of worship are among the intended applications for Christie’s latest 3LCD projectors, the 12000 lumens LX1200 and full HD 1080p LHD700. The latest launches mean that Christie has introduced no fewer than nine new LCD projectors in a mere two years. Using 4DColor technology that incorporates a fourth (yellow) LCD panel, the Christie LX1200 delivers displays with high brightness and native XGA (1024x768) resolution. The other new model, the LHD700, provides 4DColor technology and 7000 ANSI lumens. Frank Anzures, senior product manager, business products, commented: “One of Christie’s advantages is its wide selection of 3LCD models

in the 4000 lumens range and above. Customers needing mid- to highbrightness options know that they can
come to Christie and find what they need to meet their application and budget requirements. And, with innovations like Christie’s 4DColor technology, their displays can be created with vivid, dynamic colours that go beyond standard 3LCD projectors.” Stand: 1H27, 1H40, 7S169
Parallax view: The touchscreen on TouchIT’s new 65in LCD “has very low parallax, so where you touch, the cursor is right on your finger, whereas with overlays they can have a larger parallax, leading to a poor user experience,” said its CEO, Andi Braben (pictured). It is a single-touch screen, but a dual-touch version will be available by the end of Q2. There are also 42in and 55in versions. Stand: 11N73
Datavideo has launched a ‘very affordable’ HD pan/tilt/zoom camera, the PTC-100, at ISE. “You can connect up to four of the cameras to our RMC190 camera control unit, with up to four presets for each camera. It’s ideal for remote conferencing, broadcast or security applications,” said Daphne Op de Beek, marketing manager, Datavideo Technologies Europe. The PTC-100 uses a single 1/3in CMOS sensor, includes HD-SDI and SD-SDI output, comes with a ceiling bracket and remote control, and will cost about €2,800 when it ships in April. Stand: 11C84
Control4 Residential and light commercial automation technology developer Control4 is turning the spotlight on its latest video intercom solutions and automation controllers. The new video intercom range – which includes the 7in portable touchscreen with camera, the 7in in-wall touchscreen with camera, and the door station – is designed to provide dedicated control functionality and high quality communications for homes and businesses. Each product in the range features an integrated camera delivering H.264 full-motion video, along with integrated speakers and dual microphones. Activation of a Control4 intercom licence allows consumers to enable whole home or business communications and message broadcasting, as well as the ability to control auto-answer

and ‘do not disturb’ settings. Martin Plaehn, president and CEO of Control4, said: “Our video intercom family is an exciting new addition to the Control4 offering. By adding the door station and the new touchscreens to Control4 systems, consumers are able to see and communicate with others inside and outside their homes or businesses. We’re creating an exceptional audio and video intercom experience that is completely integrated with the full Control4 automation system.” Stand: 11H78
The energy management outlook With electricity prices at record highs, these should be good days to be in the energy management business. On the other hand, budgets are tight. Which of those factors will have more influence in the coming year? “It’s about return on investment,” said Mark Tallent, product manager at Crestron. “Companies know that they need to spend in order to save.” He noted how Crestron is making it easier – with free trials, and the ability to install systems incrementally – for companies to test the water. For high net worth consumers, though, saving energy still isn’t a real issue, according to Andrew Wale, VP of marketing at Vantage. “For those people, it’s about lifestyle,” he said. “But our system enables them to use energy more intelligently, which
adds to its appeal.” After a couple of challenging years, Wale felt that 2012 would definitely see an upturn. “I don’t think consumers are really feeling the energy pain yet,” said Aaron Cheatham, director of product management at Control4, “but the breaking point could be very near.” He noted that consumers in Europe are typically more energy conscious than their counterparts in the USA. AMX introduced the fourth generation of its Resource Management System last year and, according to product manager Doug Hall, the company has seen “tremendous interest”. “Customers are becoming increasingly concerned about managing energy consumption at the device level, and we can help them do that,” he said.

news Bright debut for interactivity BenQ
Electronics giant consolidates Panasonic Three B2B companies within the Panasonic family have been brought into one combined operation, Panasonic Systems Communications Company Europe (PSCEU). ISE has also seen Panasonic launch countless new products, including the 20000 lumen PT-DZ21K projectors. Designed to provide a single point of vendor contact and facilitate greater support for project roll-outs, PSCEU integrates no fewer than 12 different B2B product categories, project management and services into one organisation. Leading this team of approximately 500 is Masaki Arizono, a long-term Panasonic
employee who will now serve PSCEU in the role of managing director. Discussing the changes with The ISE Daily, Yojiro Matsubara (pictured) – director, visual systems solution BU – remarked that the new structure would ease the supply of complete solutions as well as helping to expand the business abroad. Meanwhile, Panasonic’s latest offerings include the PT-CW230 and PT-CX200, the manufacturer’s first 1-chip DLP ultra short-throw projectors with 3D functionality for interactive teaching and meetings. But arguably the biggest product news concerns the PT-DZ21K Series, the new flagship range of 20000 lumen 3-chip DLP projectors. Stand: 1H56
Passive speakers are architectural Tannoy ISE visitors saw the unveiling of Tannoy’s VLS Series passive column array loudspeaker system incorporating its Focused Asymmetrical Shaping Technology. There are three models in the VLS Series augmenting Tannoy’s offering in the architectural audio market – where maximum intelligibility and minimum aesthetic
impact are the driving concerns. Building upon the success of its flagship QFlex self-powered steerable array system, VLS offers an alternative in the shape of a passive device offering balance of performance and cost. The VLS Series is the first Tannoy product to use FAST, which is said to have “unique acoustic performance benefits not previously seen across a full range of passive column loudspeakers”. news Neets gets education
MultiTouch’s Jakko Lipponen and Anne Lindgren get hands-on
TacMan manages displays MultiTouch The new TacMan from MultiTouch is claimed to be the first remote management system for multitouch display units. It enables users to perform remote diagnostics and calibration of both individual displays and multiple units, such as multi-touch walls. “The years of research and market development that we have poured into creating MultiTaction have finally yielded what we now know to be the industry’s next platform for creating powerful multi-user multi-touch displays,” said MultiTouch CEO Petri Martikainen. This operations-system support software provides MultiTouch customers with a tool that can operate far-flung networks of multi-touch displays for applications in areas such as retail,
corporate communications, digital signage, government/military and many industrial segments. TacMan software is set to ship within a few weeks. Customers can licence the remote management and the calibration packages separately. The announcement follows MultiTouch’s European introduction of the MultiTaction Cell 55in display. It is a Full HD display that can apparently accommodate an unlimited number of both touch points and concurrent users, with full hand recognition . MultiTaction builds on MultiTouch’s patented optical imaging technology, Computer Vision Through Screen for multi-touch displays, and is designed to provide an advanced set of touch, gesture and object recognition capabilities. Stand: 11K37
Universities, schools and corporate organisations looking for simple yet powerful networked control with a uniform control interface in all rooms are the targets of Neets Control-OsCar, which has been announced by the company during this year’s ISE. Said to be remarkably simple in both appearance and function, Neets claims that it also provides powerful programming and networking features for exceptional flexibility, centralised control, and convenient monitoring. A fully networked system, Neets Control-OsCar uses a LAN connection for programming, monitoring and – when desired – control of systems in multiple rooms from a central computer. Programming is said to be simplified, and is accomplished using only a few pages in Neets Project Editor software. Neets says that its constantly updated device driver library makes it easy to select the device the user wants to control, and allows addition of more devices at any time. In addition, Neets’ Central Control software supports preventive maintenance with email reporting (to multiple addresses if desired) of projector bulb and filter hours. Compared to other networked systems, Neets says that OsCar is less expensive, takes less time to install, and is less confusing to use, featuring as it does a simple and intuitive four-button panel. Stand: 3D128
Introducing the L-Series slim-line column speaker Seeburg acoustic line Seeburg acoustic line, which was established in 1985 and focuses predominantly on the development and production of professional loudspeaker systems for mobile and permanently installed applications, has unveiled the first model from its brand new L-Series, the L16j. The German manufacturer’s L16j is a very slim column loudspeaker designed for particularly demanding applications in acoustically problematic rooms. Seeburg claims that due to its optimised waveguide and special curving, the L16j is particularly suited for homogenous reproduction of speech as well as music, at distances of up to 25m. The company says the system can be easily extended and adapted to suit a string of different applications by linking multiple L-Series speakers together; and that by summer this year, a total of six L-Series models, ranging from 4x3in to 16x3in, will be available. Stand: 7H200

IR kits meet installer needs Three IR products – the CIRP (Projector IR Control), CIRS (Conference Room/Classroom Control) and CIRV (Large Venue IR Control) – are being shown by Xantech. Developed with direct input from leading systems integrators and residential contractors, Xantech’s newest IR systems are specifically designed to address typical challenges facing installers today, including IR operation with plasma or LCD TVs, interference from CFL (compact fluorescent lighting) and sunlight, and distance limitations within a single kit. These kits are geared for use in
environments including classrooms, conference rooms, home theatres and houses of worship. Two of the systems come with an amplified connecting block, which allows the connection of Xantech IR receivers and 10 emitter ports, thus interfacing IR control with the audio/video equipment. Additionally, each system includes the WallLink (WL) in-wall version of Xantech’s Universal IR receiver, which is designed to prevent interference from plasma, LCD, LED displays and CFL lamps from entering the IR signal line. Reference Laboratory Sonny Rollins’ recording engineer of more than 30-years, Richard Corsello, recently replaced his standard XLR cables with two of Reference Laboratory’s RMC-S01s during the recording of the legendary saxophonist’s live Road Shows album. After meeting members of the Reference Laboratory team during a soundcheck, Corsello carried out an audio experiment, replacing his XLR leads with Reference Laboratory RMC-S01 cables to connect his Zoom Handy Recorder – the unit he used to record all of Rollins’ world tour – to the front of house console. Corsello reportedly found such a significant gain increase that he had to lower the console output volume, because with the previous setting, the level was strong enough to cause signal overloads. Stand: 7E211
New Silver Lite surface Da-Lite Manufacturer Screen Da-Lite is showing its newly developed silver material for front projection 2D and passive 3D projection. Silver Lite 2.5 is the newest screen surface in Da-Lite’s line of front projection materials. A multipurpose front projection surface that the manufacturer claims has been fully optimised for passive linear and circular 3D applications, it is also said to be an excellent 2D screen material. When working in 3D, the silver surface maintains almost all (99.3%) polarised light, and the 2.5 gain of the material compensates for the light lost in
the polarisation filtering process. Da-Lite says the Silver Lite material’s polarisation retention and high extension ratio completely eliminate the ghosting or crosstalk that is often experienced when dealing with stereoscopic 3D projection. When it comes to 2D projection, the manufacturer claims that Silver Lite’s gain and high contrast characteristics make it the perfect screen to use for projection in high ambient light conditions, or for use with a low output projector. Da-Lite’s Silver Lite 2.5 is also a washable surface and has a 25° viewing half angle. Stand: 2A42

SKB The manufacturer earlier this month opened SKB Europe as the central distribution point for its music pro AV, industrial and sporting goods divisions. Jerry Andreas, VP of SKB Corporation, said that the expansion of the SKB product range into professional AV, industrial, and military markets required a centralisation of the brand to achieve a better control of distribution. “There exists a major challenge selling through traditional distributors in international markets due to the broad product line and markets that we serve,” said Andreas. “This move will provide complete access to SKB products and allows us to have a more direct contact with major accounts in the European markets.” Stand: 7V183

SXGA+ res projector projectiondesign One result of close partner co-operation by projectiondesign is a new resolution and electronics upgrade encompassing SXGA+ resolution in the flagship F82 series three-chip DLP projector. The model is already available in WUXGA and 1080p resolutions,
meeting the requirements for widescreen video, computer and data-centric imaging, but adding SXGA+ has been a specific requirement for some key application areas.
Mike Raines, visual simulation manager at projectiondesign, said: “By introducing the SXGA+ resolution users of systems that require 4:3 or closer to 1:1 aspect ratios optimises the usage of pixels. SXGA+ resolution has traditionally been hard to find in 3-chip projection. “Our partners in the simulation and training fields have asked for this capability, particularly to address the burgeoning update market where many manufacturers’ legacy projectors require replacement due to age,” added Raines. “In addition, we’re happy to meet this demand head on, which also is seen in the Virtual Reality and Computer Aided Virtual Environments (CAVEs) space.” Stand: 1M27
mobile devices such as an iPhone, iPad or laptop. The system enables instructors to teach using their choice of analogue or digital media sources, including HD video,

Transparent displays Hyundai The best digital signage catches the eye – and few displays are more eye-catching than those you can see through. With this in mind, Hyundai IT is showcasing a 46in transparent display, which the company suggests will enable interesting applications in the field of digital signage. As it has a transparent display layer, the viewer is able to look through the panel and see the environment behind it making it, according to Hyundai, especially suitable for POS/POI installations such as shop windows and bus shelters. The display has a resolution of 1366x768 and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1. Response time is 8ms and the vertical and horizontal viewing
angle is 80°. The transmittance of the display is around 12-15%, by showing a colour gamut of 5%. It comes with an embedded USB player, and touchscreen function is optionally available. Also on show is the D558FL 55in video wall display which is designed for multiscreen installations. With its integrated video wall functionality and its almost invisible bezels (only 5.5mm – two displays side-by-side) the D558FL is capable of delivering large, virtually seamless images. In addition, the D558FL features a full LED backlight, which delivers a brightness of 700cd/sqm and a contrast ratio of 3,000:1. Resolution is 1920x1080. Stand: 10N120

Nexcom’s NDiS OPS-M50 digital signage player complies with Intel’s Open Pluggable Specification (OPS), which is designed to simplify installation, upgrade and maintenance of large-scale digital signage applications. Based on the COM Express architecture, the player provides further flexibility which extends the life cycle of the unit, says the developer. In addition, the NDiS OPS-M50 is equipped with Mini PCI and slim SATA SSD, providing functionality and storage capacity in a small footprint to meet a range of requirements. Stand: 10R142
VisioSign Since 1999, exhibitor VisioSign has specialised in digital information systems and has concentrated on the development, delivery and support of InfoBoard. According to the company, the design emphasis for InfoBoard is on userfriendliness, ease of access in several languages, and the ability to construct the complete digital signage system. With only a few clicks, says VisioSign, users can inform target groups on information screens, meeting room displays, kiosk information systems and so on – simultaneously. Stand: 10P142
Terminals with a sure touch The UTC and HIT series of touch computers and infotainment terminals includes what the company describes as the latest multi-touch technology, near field communications (NFC), and integrated payment systems. The HIT-W121, HIT-W151 and HIT-W181 infotainment terminals feature full-flat displays ranging from 12in to 18in, with projective capacitive touchscreen (PCT) panels. They run Windows 7, Linux or Android. The UT C-515 and UT C-521 Ubiquitous Touch Computers are powered by dual core Intel Atom D510 processors, and are designed to provide interactive user experiences while combining low power consumption with quiet, fanless operation. Ready as integrated payment POS devices and with NFCcapable RFID inputs, they accept transaction requests from Android, Symbian and other smart phones, seamlessly integrating with applications like Google Wallet. Advantech says the devices offer stylish solutions for displays in
public spaces and can be found in airports, restaurants, theme parks, hotels and other locations. PCT is a fast-response, highly sensitive, multi-touch technology that allows intuitive interactive use, with two fingers supporting zoom, flick, and rotate functions. The developer notes that older technologies are limited to smaller displays – but the latest PCT technologies allow users to interact with displays from 15.6in upwards. RFID is built into all UTC and HIT series products, allowing NFCenabled devices such as an iPhone equipped with Google Wallet to complete transactions with a wave over a contact-less reader. NFC is the industry’s latest trend in integrating payments between consumer handheld devices and backend POS devices. An NFC-ready UTC touch computer is an ideal addition to a food service court looking to offer selfservice ordering and interactive menu queries, says Advantech. Stand: 10S130
VideoBlades on a roll Lighthouse The new VideoBlades GroundRoll and SkyRoll LED displays roll up or down from a patented rotating structure, just like a window shade. The technology is the result of an alliance between Lighthouse and Pix2o, and provides a 12.5mm pixel pitch, modular LED screen for use indoors and outdoors. The modular format of the VideoBlades 12 allows for the seamless formation of largescale screens limited in size only by a customer’s needs, says the exhibitor. The system is composed of individual display IMs, or Blades, which can be organised horizontally or vertically into a
video display of any size. The Blades can also be used in groups or singly as set lighting fixtures and scenic elements. They are all operated from the same control and distribution system. The SkyRoll version deploys down from overhead and is available in 4m, 6m and 8m widths and up to 10m screen heights, while GroundRoll rises up from the floor, which is claimed to result in the lowest possible rigged weight. It is available in infinitely seamable sections 2m to 3m wide, up to 10m high. Both SkyRoll and GroundRoll are pre-configured at the factory and shipped with the minimal number of electrical and mechanical connections required to operate the system. The VideoBlades 12 are supported by an integrated truss sub-structure to afford maximised truck packing, faster load in/out speeds, and minimise handling and damage. Stand: 11E62

Mediaglass led to ISE Leurocom Mediaglass is a new integrated glass/LED system for large area facade displays. The multi-layer laminated glass has built-in LED strips with integrated RGB multichip LEDs that can be controlled individually via video signal with 48-bit colour depth. The pixel matrix can be individually adjusted to the project and place of installation via the distance between each LED and the distance between each of the strips. This patent-pending system can be serviced and maintained without changing the glass. It was developed by Leurocom in co-operation with BGT Bischoff Glastechnik, Bretten, and Inglas Produktions, Friedrichshafen. Leurocom is also showing monochrome and bi-colour dis-
plays, plus full colour video displays and large area media facades. “The international field of applications are multifaceted. For example, full matrix displays for sports, industry and transportation, full colour videos for large area outdoor advertisement, city information systems and fairs as well as innovative transparent displays for the integration at building facades,” said Leurocom managing director, Michael Bredow. Having established led mediatecture as a joint venture with ag4 mediatecture, Leurocom can now offer customers “a complete service package from the realisation of an idea to the media content for individual lighting solutions”, Bredow added. Automatic advertising Vukunet, the new digital out-ofhome advertising engine from NEC Display Solutions, is being introduced to Europe at this ISE, following its successful roll out in the US, and holds the promise of a simpler business model with lower costs. It is an automated ad delivery platform that links screen owners with advertisers, and can turn any internet-connected screen into an advertising channel, opening up many more ways for advertisers to reach their audience, and creating new revenue streams for screen owners. “Static billboards and signage are rapidly being replaced by sophisticated digital signage, which can be interactive, responsive and real time,” said Stefanie Corinth, VP marketing and business development, NEC Display Solutions Europe. “Vukunet in particular delivers an end-to-end, automated platform that connects digital screens
with advertising revenue and highlights how NEC is developing a range of products and solutions that ensures we lead the way in all aspects of display technology,” Corinth added. Vukunet is bringing some level of standardisation to the industry, offering what NEC says is the first universal inventory management, advert delivery, billing and payment, and reporting system. It can drive ads to any DOOH network, regardless of content management system. Also on display at the company’s stand is the Leaf Engine, a joint R&D project with NEC Laboratories in Heidelberg, aimed at creating more intelligent digital signage through the development of a distributed middleware layer that offers sensor plug-and-play functionality. This should make it easier to gather data for content targeting, interaction and audience measurement. Stand: 4R24
The CleverLCD brand of largeformat interactive touchscreens has apparently been a success for Sahara, and the company is planning to build on that success with the ISE launch of its first LED backlit model, the CleverLED Touch Dual 46in. Sahara says that it will be the first of many new models to be introduced in 2012. With LED backlighting a number of significant benefits are introduced, according to Sahara. The bezel is 16% slimmer than its LCD equivalent, while maintaining inherent robustness thanks to the steel surround and toughened glass. Stand: 3D99
We ask: What are the hottest trends in digital signage at the moment?
The integration of the user context with apps is surely a trend. But the true reason for this is the requirement of the mature customer to be addressed with respect to his actual situation. This means the true hottest trend is that we have to address, inspire, involve the recipient of the message while considering his situation and offering the most value for him. Pierre Farine, CEO, screenFOOD Simplicity! To ensure that digital signage be used by anyone and without technical barriers. Serge Konter, marketing manager, SpinetiX Flat screens and LED technology have ruled the market, reaching many people simultaneously. This
trend will continue, especially with a renaissance of split walls, now with seamless LC displays creating larger images in higher resolution than LED screens. But in society as in advertisement there is a motion to let people participate. So smaller displays in shops providing individual information and advertisement interactively show great potential to become the new wave after big advertisement surfaces for the crowds as we know them.” Tobias Lang, CEO, LANG Cloud-based digital signage is also a real trend, allowing digital signage to be offered as a web service. SaaS has emerged as a popular solution because it is reliable and cost-efficient and can be deployed rapidly. Seeing is believing People are becoming familiar with smartphone interactivity and touchscreens, so their use in DS is readily understood
DS can interact with consumers on many more levels than ‘click for more information’ igital signage (DS) is being used in many ways, from simple advertising to creative and complex systems that are built on a network that can be connected to the endless world of social media. Many DS integrations derive from the need to communicate with the target group, thus used as a marketing tool to reach a broader audience, improving the brand identity/awareness and to push sales. This year the DS industry has seen an enormous growth despite the economic crush. Part of the stimulus has come with widespread penetration of smartphones. People are becoming familiar with mobile technology such as touch-screens and the use of apps to encourage interactivity. The use of touch-screens and interactive media in a DS application is in turn more readily understood and accepted. Combine this technology with social media networks and you have a potent concept. For example, Coca-Cola uses facial recognition kiosks with straight uploads to Facebook at events such as the Summer Love event in Israel. JELL-O installed a big 3D billboard in New York City, using social media in a more communicative way. This system used Twitter for interactivity with the target audience. McDonald’s used a very clever tool to gain more brand awareness. In London you can take a picture of yourself standing in front of a big digital display show-

Adrian Pennington asks market leaders how interactivity and social networking advance the growth and success of DS “People don’t see the big picture yet and companies would like to see ROI,” she adds. “Money plays a big role. There are endless possibilities within DS and connecting networks to enhance interactivity, measure consumer behaviour and increase sales. It’s just that a lot of companies first need to see the advantages before they start believing and investing. “Seeing is believing. Another
A new modular video wall mount solution from Vogel’s Professional acknowledges the difficulties that can be encountered during the creation of a video wall. In such installations, it is important that displays are placed as close to each other as possible and in perfect alignment. To achieve this, the user wants as few variables as possible. With the Vogel’s video wall solution – suitable for professional displays from 40in to 52in – the user is provided with a simple two-part solution. A minimum of measurement and adjustment is required to create a seamless installed video wall, thereby reducing total installation time to a minimum, says the exhibitor. Stand: 1M45

barrier is that a lot of marketeers don’t know what is possible in terms of technology and therefore they don’t know what to look for and how to use it correctly. I am confident that DS and interactive media will only see growth in the coming years.” It’s a trend that might be crucial for the leaders and innovators in DS today. You can only fully understand the capability of a projector by seeing firsthand the images that it produces. Canon’s quality lives up to its promise and we want to show that rather than simply saying it – so I would use an extra €100,000 to get out on the road more. Our main aim at ISE is talking to potential partners about how we can work together to create outstanding solutions for their customers. Although the number of 3Dready consumer displays sold in the UK is predicted to triple by the end of this year to 2.3m (Futuresource) the international market for 3D is growing only slowly. The economic climate is playing its part to dampen down display sales, the consumer is being exposed to too much ‘filler’ material on channels because of a dearth of original content,
while poorly converted or produced stereo films are damaging the perception of 3D’s value at the box office. Perhaps then in education and other sectors where the technology is showing potential, 3D could take-off first. 3D is on the agenda of trade bodies InfoComm and CEDIA, as well as trade shows like ISE. The technology is now being applied in almost every avenue of pro-AV, albeit at the margins. Volume rendering software combined with 3D monitors can be used with Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Positron Emission
In R&D and employment, of course! Active Audio has so many ideas for innovative products that we would know what to do with 10 times more money! Constant innovation in smart products is our strategy. And we have many more. Regis Cazin, managing director, Active Audio

We put a lot of emphasis on education within the training bracket. Practical knowledge is fundamental to growing the industry and as technology becomes more sophisticated in terms of what you can achieve, then education becomes even more of a priority, which suppliers like ourselves must take a lead on. Cory Schaeffer, vice president of sales worldwide, Listen Technologies Nowadays, a good promotional tool is visual communication through the Web. We know many installers and engineers are lacking experience with fibre-optic products, some even being afraid of it. We would invest the unexpected money into
Mechanical engineers and industrial designers can use stereo imaging to help them and a client get a more accurate understanding of depth and position. Architects can visualise a building long before it is built. 3D budgets are dropping dramatically while the introduction of integrated 3D camcorders which combine dual lenses in a single lightweight body, will soon put professional 3D production into many more hands. 3D displays are essential to 3D growth and the killer app could be signage, but most observers reckon 3D will remain niche until the glasses barrier is breached. Prototypes have been shown of autostereoscopic OLED panels while there are a number of glasses-free displays available now and aimed at the signage and video conferencing market. Mobile devices work fine autostereoscopically because of the 1-1 viewing experience and it is hoped that their market penetration will drive 3D applications. 3D could be combined with augmented reality techniques on mobiles as a means of wayfinding or brand promotion. “We aren’t far away from the next stage where children can hold and manipulate 3D images in their hands,” Katheryn MacAulay, the deputy head at The Abbey School, one of the DLP test sites told BBC news online. “This could be combined with online learning. It could be a phenomenally successful educational model that is truly visionary.”

Dr HK Shin, CEO, Opticis I would invest it in website and online marketing improvements. The website is the central point of reference today in our industry, bringing together catalogues, sales tools, communications and other materials. news Fibre optic extenders cables. The ABtUS fibre optic extenders also come with IR, keyboard, mouse and RS-232 control pass-through. Sales director Delson Goh explained the choice of plastic fibre over its glass equivalent.
“Plastic fibre is far more flexible and can bend more than glass fibre; it is thus much easier to install. The installation and connection are less stringent than glass fibre. It is a more suitable medium for last minute staging over long distances, for example a stadium, where fast installation becomes a critical success factor.” Stand: 1P20

unified communications Educational video maps paradigm shift Vaddio Students are growing up in a digital age and are seeking innovative ways to learn and collaborate with others. That is the premise of a new Vaddio White Paper authored by S Ann Earon, PhD, ‘Video in Education Paradigm Shift’, which examines how the distribution of content is changing the way information is accessed, and how to make the best use of video technologies to engage students at school or wherever they may be located. The document suggests that building a consistent front-end will allow schools, colleges and universities to teach from a consistent platform. The ‘back-end’, or engine, may change with further innovation. The objective is to understand that a consistent high-tech classroom can remain and grow. Tracking cameras for instructors, student cameras and touch-to-talk microphones for remote students, video whiteboards, HD document cameras, and fully integrated computers will drive the content and make it easier to communicate.
Earon also raises the question of why change the front-end every time a new ‘engine’ is developed. Add video-conferencing, streaming, video-on-demand, Skype and cloud computing, suggests the paper, but do not change everything just because students demand an addition to their communications inventory. Distance learning, streaming, recording, and distribution via Web links are all readily available technologies. The engines will change and grow, but the consistency of the front-end classroom will remain the single most important piece of the solution, Earon contends. Carefully selecting quality front-end products will allow organisations to cost-effectively reap the benefits of video communications for many years without the need to constantly change all aspects of technology as the engines change. For more information on the White Paper ‘Video in Education Paradigm Shift’, go to www. vaddio.com/ white_papers.php. Stand: 1F122

The manufacturer is showcasing its new IT-12 interpretation system, which it claims can provide an innovative open platform for a variety of different installations. The product is said to be compatible with most brands; the precondition, according to the manufacturer, is just a single audio input. As well as being deployed for new installations, JTS says the IT-12 is equally suited for existing systems where an interpretation function is required. The IT-12 supports 11 language interpretations and has 12 outputs, each corresponding to a separate language. Stand: 7H190
Taiden After rigorous system testing, the World Bank, headquartered in Washington DC, has ordered a Taiden HCS-8300 paperless multimedia congress system with 47 HCS-8318 terminals to equip its executive boardroom. This is the third time the World Bank has turned to Taiden, having previously acquired four sets of HCS-5300 digital IR wireless systems in early 2010 and extensively used a Taiden digital infra-red SI system for its annual meetings. Taiden says that its HCS-8300 system is specially designed for high-end meetings such as summits, congresses, parliaments and city councils. It is based on Taidenoriginated gigabit multimedia congress stream technologies, with all audio and video signals transmit-
ted via a Cat6 gigabit network cable. The system is said to fully guarantee realtime performance and stability of the data streams of the meeting such as audio, voting information, and control information. The Paperless Multi-media Congress Terminal is equipped with a 10in touch panel and an integrated camera and provides interactive conference control functions (speech, voting, SIS), paperless meetings, video conversation, various video and conference services and so on. A benefit of the HCS-8300 is that there is no need to issue large amounts of papers prior to the meeting, reducing time, effort and expense and increasing security. Stand: 3C115

VBrick The new 9000 series Encoding Appliance is being demonstrated on VBrick Systems’ stand. According to the company, the 9000 Series resets the bar for video encoding performance worldwide, delivering the first high-density, high-definition streaming video encoding appliance. The company says that the 9000 Series is a natural progression and continued evidence of VBrick’s engineering prowess in bringing to market encoders that are designed with purpose-built hardware and software, as well as a realtime operating system. VBrick claims that it has more enterprise encoders deployed than any other company in the industry. The company suggests that organisations are already seeking out the kind of high quality and high-channel density being offered by the 9000 Series. For example, it says that the success of missioncritical surveillance and telemedicine applications is driven by image quality, requiring industry leading 1080p 60fps. In other instances, including television distribution and digital
signage, hundreds of assets are distributed from enterprise head-ends where physical space and power consumption are precious and encoding per-square-inch becomes a deciding factor of a successful deployment. The 9000 Series is the encoding element of the VBrick Enterprise Video Architecture (VEVA), which spans video capture, distribution, play-out and video content management. Integration into the VEVA architecture is said to dramatically simplify deployment and use, delivering centralised management and scheduling functions as well as intuitive browser-based management interfaces. When used in conjunction with other VEVA solutions – specifically VBrick’s VEMS Mystro content management solution and the Distributed Media Engine – the 9000 Series is claimed to be able to deliver video to any device, over any network. The Series’ Universal Protocol Engine delivers video using any protocol including Flash, iOS, Smooth Streaming and SilverLight. Stand: 10Q116
New encoder/decoder is designed for IP networks ClearOne The new View MLAV9500 Digital AV Encoder and View VL9300 Digital AV Decoder use ClearOne’s StreamNet technology for distributing, controlling and synchronising HD video and audio content over fully IP-based networks. The developer says that this allows installers to design AV and signage networks with a virtually unlimited number of digital sources and displays. Using an MLAV9500 encoder with each digital source component, such as a Blu-ray player, satellite receiver, cable box or DVR makes the source available anywhere on the StreamNet network. The View VL9300 decoder allows any digital display or AV component to access content on the StreamNet network, even if it uses a different signal format than the source. For example, a Blu-ray player connected via HDMI to the ML AV9500 could provide the video signal to a monitor that is
CommTec
connected to the VL9300 via DVI. For hardware simplicity and to avoid any compatibility issues with different HDMI standards, both the MLAV9500 and VL9300 use the DVI connector for DVI, DVI-D and HDMI devices. ClearOne also provides a DVI-to-HDMI dongle for connecting the new View components to an HDMI source or playback device. The new components can be rack- or wall-mounted, and the VL9300 decoder also attaches directly to any HDTV or monitor with an industry-standard VESA mount. In addition to its DVI connector and network interface, the VL9300 provides analogue audio output, and I/O connectors for infrared, RS-232 and GPIO applications. Stand: 3C112

unified communications Vox Pop We ask: If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
I would like to see manufacturers on board with globalisation. It is challenging when you are trying to serve global clients and you have to quote regionally. As
globalisation penetrates our industry more and more, we will need to adapt and that goes not only for the integrators but for our suppliers as well. James Sprayberry, CTS vice president, operations, Verrex I would make sure that iOS is available to all manufacturers, and used by all. It makes perfect sense to use a single platform so
that software solution vendors don’t have to develop on multiple platforms. A single platform would also enable customers to use the same application independently of who made their devices of choice. Unfortunately, this appears to be a dream and not reality. Johannes G Rietschel, CEO and founder of Barix
I would like ‘green solutions’ to be something more than just a marketing approach. For that it would help to have a way of realistically and easily measuring the impact of our decisions on the environment. We always try to keep the environment in mind but there’s always more that can be done! Regis Cazin, managing director, Active Audio
Clearly, I would ask for more realisation at the end-user level regarding what is possible and for what price. Dale Miller, vice president, EMEA, Christie We’d love to see more companies embrace standard systems, which will aid interoperability. We’re in a fairly mature marketplace now, and it behoves everyone to work well together. The industry also needs to put training and certification at the top of the collective agenda, to make sure we continue to meet customer expectations in this standards-based world. Kevin Morrison, managing director – Europe, AMX Greater adherence to industry standards for easier systems integration and interoperability. John Geaney, CES portfolio lead, unified communications, HP Technology Consulting The major change we need to make in our industry is to move away from the fragmented solution made up of many different manufacturers’ products. Our business is all about providing ease of integration of products and solutions, providing the user a solid working system, connecting every device, in any discipline (AV, IT, lighting, building controls). Often a client won’t know how to achieve what they want, as the proliferation can make choices confusing. Robin van Meeuwen, VP of international sales and marketing, Crestron We need to encourage dealers and installers to be proactive in selling against closed solutions, and in favour of forwardthinking, futureproof solutions. When you are dealing with integration of multiple components, adaptability is key, and being able to address the various protocols will help ensure the life of the system. Xantech saw this trend early on with the introduction of the iPad in 2010, which is why our WIC1200 has a Web server built in, so it can host a control page that any Web-enabled device like an iPad, iPhone, Android, or tablet can access and utilise for control applications. Peerless-AV Gordon Dutch, MD
What does the ISE show mean to you? It means the start of an exciting new year and our continued expansion in to Europe. ISE is the number one show for ROI we have had for the past three years. This year represents an opportunity to show a full range of video wall and digital signage products and to demonstrate their key features and benefits. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at this time? I think flat panel and touchscreen developments and the increasing understanding of the potential in the digital signage sector are very exciting. My only concern is low quality, difficult to install and service products de-valuing the quality you can buy. We have
already seen the consumer market ‘race to zero’ in the quest for low, ultimately unsustainable, prices. Why should delegates visit your stand at ISE? Peerless-AV won ‘Best of Infocomm’ this year, which I hope would give you a clue‌ However, Peerless-AV is not just another US brand selling US products. We have made significant investments in dedicated European ‘metric’ products and also have some exciting new products to show such as our 3x3 Video Wall Trolley. Stand: 11E64

Keep track of teacher AutoTrak 2.0 – a new automated camera tracking system designed for educational and corporate training facilities – has been
launched by Vaddio at ISE 2012. Using this system, the instructor simply wears a lanyard belt-pack that emits infrared light received by an IR PTZ camera. Video is then sent from the IR PTZ camera to the tracking camera. The result, says Vaddio, is a smooth, accurate panning motion that follows the instructor as he/she walks around the presentation area. The system also elimi-
nates the need for a member of staff to follow the instructor’s movements. AutoTrak 2.0 includes Vaddio’s E a s y Ta l k professional g r a d e wireless audio system. The high-quality unidirectional microphone, built into the lanyard, features an HD wireless link for interference-free operation and full frequency spectrum audio. Outputs of the wireless audio interface include balanced or unbalanced line level for sound reinforcement or recording applications, while a USB 2.0 audio interface lets users connect to a computer for Skype, PC video conferencing or PC capture applications. Garden subs! Niles Audio The GS Garden Speakers range – comprising outdoor speakers and an in-ground subwoofer – has been introduced by Niles Audio at ISE 2012. Housed in UV-stabilised, long-lasting ABS plastic, the Niles GS4 4in Satellite Loudspeaker is built to survive temperature extremes of -45° to 85° Celsius. Installers of the speaker – which includes a 4in mineral-filled polypropylene woofer and 1in Teteron tweeter – can use the pre-installed wall-mount brackets or Niles’ Twist & Lock connection to change to the included stake mount. Meanwhile, the GSS10 10in inground subwoofer (right) is designed to bring ‘deep, rich bass’ to the outdoors. Constructed from industrial strength PVC, the GSS10 incorporates a 10in mineral-filled polypropylene woofer and can output frequencies from 25Hz to 110Hz at up to 110dB. The sub sports a recommended burial depth of 16in-18in and dimensions of 14x30in. “The introduction of our new GS Garden Speakers and in-ground subwoofer allow dealers to offer the same level of audio quality and sleek, blend-in designs for outside applications as Niles in-ceiling speakers provide inside the home,” said Niles president Mike ‘Sparky’ Detmer. “Installers can now install powerful, high fidelity outdoor audio systems to fit any environment with minimal visibility.” Stand: 1N73

residential systems BMB Electronics The first member of Amina’s new Evolution family of invisible loudspeakers, the AIW350, is being exhibited by distributor BMB Electronics at ISE today. Featuring Amina’s OptiDrive and OptiDamping technologies, the AIW350 is said to deliver significantly improved sound quality in key areas. While OptiDrive facilitates a more accurate frequency response, OptiDamping increases low-frequency extension and dynamic range, resulting in improved bass definition. The use of these new technologies – developed over the last three years by the Amina R&D team – is said to move invisible loudspeaker performance a ‘significant step forward’. The new speaker fits the existing backboxes and has the same dimensions as the AIWX Series, which will continue alongside the new Evolution family. Stand: 1P22, 1P35
News Analysis
“The roll-out of superfast broadband will play a significant role in the future of the Cloud”
David Davies on residential integrators fulfilling requests for Cloud-based services
Head in the clouds?
Clouds ahead but, ultimately, the future is bright
FUD – Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt – combine with bandwidth issues and difficulties in monetising new services he ubiquity of repeatviewing services like the groundbreaking BBC iPlayer and music streaming providers such as Spotify has conclusively sealed the deal on the cloud’s journey into the mainstream. Once a tech-crowd buzzword, ‘the Cloud’ now enjoys a global resonance, particularly with a generation that expects to fulfil the majority of its music and movie needs in the online world.

Cineak’s diamonds The Ferrier from Cineak (above) is designed to offer a unique approach by applying diamond stitching patterns to a home entertainment seat, while maintaining style and increasing comfort. The Ferrier features: fine European leather or fabric upholstery; a steel recliner mechanism in either manual or dual-motorised version; an articulating headrest that allows for desired viewing condition and proper head and neck support; and a black or silver push-button to operate the mechanism. The recline mechanism allows for the backrest and footrest to operate independently from one another. Hand-cut high-density foam cushioning is designed to yield years of comfort and performance, says the company. A variety of options and features, including contrast stitching/embroidery and contact closure control of the relax mechanism, are available. Stand: 1N90
The double-speed nature of this trend raises an obvious question: is residential install keeping pace with the changes? Christiaan Beukes, owner of South Africa’s Sphere Custom, echoes the sentiments of other integrators in highlighting the growing number of requests for increasingly sophisticated cloudbased deployments, while lamenting enduring bandwidth issues that render them problematic.
Kaleidescape
By way of example, he cites a recent quotation for a project to involve streaming and synchronisation at a client’s three homes – each in different countries – with content to be in sync across all locations regardless of where it is up/downloaded. No mean feat – and even more challenging a prospect when you realise that this entire area of technology is still in the process of being defined. “The main difficulty in integrating such systems is that the defining lines between what falls under IT, AV, personal communications, backup technologies and streaming [are] becoming increasingly blurred,” says Beukes. “As an integrator, I think the biggest challenge we face is streaming multiple sources of content into user-friendly systems for clients to use. Most of the time, each solution is different – there are simply still too many variables.” No one could deny the myriad of possibilities afforded by the Cloud – from real-time streaming, to time-limited and unlimited downloading, to outright purchase. Moreover, plenty of CI sector-friendly companies are helping to pave the way for easier implementation by integrators – for instance, by integrating services such as Spotify into their product offerings.
For David Snipp – managing director of Stardraw.com and the presenter of the ‘Cloud computing and AV’ session during Monday’s InfoComm Future Trends Summit – the only issue delaying “further roll-out is FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt). [People] already use the cloud each and every day. You can call it Twitter, Facebook or emails. They already expect everything online. The issue is that integrators haven’t figured out how to make any money from it.” This surely goes to the heart of the problem; the trend is undeniable and unstoppable, but how to monetise it? Rendering Cloud-based offerings as a distinct strand in the overall portfolio of services could be one approach. Ensuring that customers have sufficient – and sufficiently accessible – storage and backup for this wealth of content might be another. Individual countries’ roadmaps towards the roll-out of superfast broadband will play a significant role in shaping the future of the Cloud, but so too will the natural tendencies of the market to gravitate towards a handful of ‘core’ services. That particular day of judgement is still some way off, but one suspects it can’t come soon enough for integrators looking to make sense of this brave new world.

Movie magic – scene by scene New flagship loudspeaker A new feature for the Kaleidescape System, Kaleidescape Scenes, is designed to put the most memorable moments of a user’s movie collection at their fingertips. Kaleidescape experts have selected more than 4,000 of the funniest, scariest, most actionpacked and emotionally charged scenes from over 700 of the most popular movies – with more being added each day. The resulting entertainment ‘snacks’, says Kaleidescape, are ideal for those times when the viewer doesn’t have sufficient time to watch an entire film.
“In the past, watching a movie was a two-hour commitment I could rarely make,” said Michael Malcolm, founder, chairman and CEO of Kaleidescape. “Now it’s possible to spend as little as a few minutes exploring my collection, and it can be a social experience I share with family and friends.” Kaleidescape Scenes are available today and the scenes database is part of the exclusive Kaleidescape Movie Guide. System and Movie Guide updates are distributed automatically, without dealer or customer intervention. Stand: 1P90
The manufacturer is showing its new P860, a bi-amplified threeway, screen channel speaker capable of delivering THX reference level playback in rooms up to 24m in depth. The P860 stands 1.8m tall and uses a 1.5in high-frequency compression driver on a Procelladesigned constant directivity waveguide, dual 8in high-output midranges, and six 10in woofers. The system is capable of producing peak output levels up to 138dB, and features 2.4kW of active biamplification, provided by a Procella DA-1400 rack-mount power
amplifier, boasting operation to 40Hz. Procella says its expected MSRP is $25,000 per speaker. “The P860 was created due to demands from our dealers worldwide seeking a bigger loudspeaker, capable of producing what we call the ‘Procella Effect’ in the very largest of home cinemas,” said Procella’s founding partner, Gerben Van Duyl. “They wanted big, so we gave them big!” Van Duyl added. “We designed the P860 loudspeaker to deliver the SPL required for THX reference in very large home cinemas.” Stand: 7M186

home, the application will use the Wi-Fi connection by default. On top of this, it is also possible to view through multiple cameras, so Fasttel says the application is ideal for video surveillance. Other executable control actions include users being able to open their gates from their vehicle upon entering their street. All of these functions can be carried out using an iPhone or iPad, and the manufacturer is also launching Android and PC versions. Stand: 7Q174
Streamer boost for popular server range VidaBox T h e U S - b as e d m a n u f a c t u r e r VidaBox has announced enhanced media server compatibility with third-party streamers from Popc o r n H o u r, H D I D u n e, T i V X , XBMC and other budget-friendly players. The development means that dealers and integrators can take advantage of VidaBox’s Drop-n-Rip
technologies for Blu-ray, DVD and CD archiving, and combine them with these media streamers to offer a balance between low cost and convenience. “Inexpensive streamers are becoming more and more popular, but lack a mechanism for importing disc-based content,” said Vida Box president Steven Cheung.
“Our VidaBox servers’ and their one-step, Drop-n-Rip disc archiving feature solves this issue, and with newly added metadata support for third-party players, integrators can provide similar feature sets for their clients, and allow access to stored music and movies with the basic cover art and metadata.” Stand: 9B111

What are the major technology drivers for the business going forward? In loudspeakers, the most important technology continues to be the line array. Community offers its Entasys column line array, a high-performance, three-way design with line array performance up to 16kHz in a slender, attractive enclosure. Later on this year, we will introduce some exciting new line array products. And, since line arrays work well in many, but not all, applications, Community continues to offer a wide variety of
two-way and three-way boxed loudspeaker systems for clusters, exploded clusters and other pointsource designs. In the future, many loudspeaker systems will include amplification, DSP and networking for control and audio distribution. The major driver for adoption of this technology is an industry standard for digital audio distribution. Today, there are several competing standards. For this reason, Community’s new dSPEC, a rack-mount loudspeaker management DSP, has the ability to use AES, Cobranet and future AV networking standards.

In a further continuation of its increasingly high-profile presence in the world’s major sporting venues, Yamaha power amplifiers have been installed at the new Žalgiris Arena in Lithuania. Located in Kaunas, the €50m Žalgiris Arena covers 39,684sqm and is the largest in the Baltic states. Designed as a multipurpose sports and entertainment venue, its primary functions are hosting basketball matches and live concerts, seating 15,442 spectators for the former and up to 17,500 for the latter. An audio design devised by project engineer Orunas Urbonas and installed by Audiotonas saw the specification of 16 Yamaha TX4n and 15 TX5n amplifiers, with a pair of NHB32-C 32-channel CobraNet interfaces, to drive a Martin Audio PA comprising 52 AM3s and four AM15s. Urbonas explained: “The main reasons

hat are the key opportunities for your customers in the current market environment? Security and mass notification systems often require high-level voice paging systems that are beyond the capabilities of typical fire alarm or security systems. Sporting facilities, transportation terminals, shopping malls, schools and other public spaces are good examples of this kind of opportunity. Community continues to offer a wide variety of high-level, weather-resistant loudspeakers for these systems. Many of these loudspeakers are now safety-agency certified and most are high-fidelity products that can be used for music as well as voice. In today’s economy, new construction may be down but customers still need improved audio systems. Thus, the retrofit market is strong in most countries we serve and Community strives to provide innovative products that can fill customers’ needs in existing facilities. As an example, we offer many ‘configure-to-order’ products in custom colours and with a choice of features such as horn pattern.

According to German KVM/DVI switch and extender manufacturer IHSE, it is the only company in the world that can supply a solution with the specifications and performance of its Draco switch. Described as cost-effective and reliable and setting new standards in digital KVM and video switching, the Draco tera matrix is said to be especially suited for medium and large AV post production studios and TV studio installations as well as control centres of all kinds. Using extender units on the CPU and console side, IHSE says that the matrix provides the fastest instant switching currently available between video sources, including instant access to CPUs with no IP routing and no monitor
resync. The matrix serves as a router and repeater, allowing CPUs or video sources to be located up to 120m from the user on either side using Cat5e cables or, for distances up to several kilometres, using fibre connections. IHSE says that the Draco tera’s unique ‘mix and match’ capability means that it can even route Cat5ebased input to fibre outputs and vice versa. This allows for data centre installations based on cheaper Cat5e cabling, while remote users will be connected via fibre, resulting in maximum cost efficiency. According to the company, the modular architecture of the Draco tera matrix family allows for a smooth and flexible transition from a 48-port matrix up to the currently largest frame with a maximum of 288 ports. The CPU board and I/O
boards can be used in any size frame. With its 288, 160, 80 or 48 port frames, the Draco tera can
be matched to specific customer requirements, even for complex applications. Stand: 10R122

approach will give the screens contrast as high as 1,000,000:1 (dynamic), says DynaScan. Built-in video daisy chaining means that a single 1080p source can be used on video walls up to 6x6 in size without the need for an additional external video wall controller. To increase performance and prolong the lifespan of the display, the DS55LT4 uses a fanless thermal management system. Heat generated by the display is radiated away from high temperature areas, while a sensor continuously monitors the internal temperature to protect the system from overheating. This is especially beneficial in areas with a lot of dust, the manufacturer points out. Stand: 11C80

Vox Pop We ask: What would you say has been the biggest change in your area of technology since the first ISE in 2004?
Perhaps the biggest change since the inception of the show is the transition from analogue to digital. This has been driven by consumers who want to watch Blu-ray movies and stream HD content, as well as universities, corporations and government agencies who want to upgrade to HD videoconferencing and distribute 1080p content throughout their enterprise. Basically, today, everyone wants digital HD. An INDICATION of this growth is the fact that DigitalMedia is the most successful range we have ever made. We have installed over 10,000 systems worldwide, which proves the need for a fully integrated solution that makes the pathway from analogue to digital seamless. Robin van Meeuwen, VP of international sales and marketing, Crestron
news Analogue went digital. The many benefits of digital signal processing technologies have made the associated products become the standard for any mobile or permanent sound reinforcement application at almost every size and budget level. Today analogue gear has become a rarely seen exception, utilised by enthusiasts. Although I don’t think that it changed Adamson in particular, as we were using DSPs for quite a while already, this to me seems to be the biggest change in pro audio in general over the last years. Jochen Sommer, director of European operations, Adamson Systems Engineering When LED displays first came into existence the panels were a bulky rectangular shape that could only be assembled in a modular format. However, there have been many breakthroughs in LED technology since the first ISE in 2004. Now, LED displays are lightweight; can be assembled in irregular shapes; are multifunctional and can be used for

such things as wrapping a building; they can be mounted onto the side of a bus for advertising… they can be rolled up and down; can be see-through and much more. The creativity they afford is unlimited. Not to mention the fact that the pixel pitch has become smaller and smaller to provide ultra-high resolution screens. Jason Skillicorn, sales and marketing director, Lighthouse Technologies The advent of the smartphone and tablets with the IP structure for the home has created a new world of integrated apps for the home for entertainment and home control. The merger of TV, remote controls, music services, movie services and the more practical side of home climate control , lighting, irrigation and security is making home automation less a luxury for the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and certainly is now clearly headed for the middle of the market. Paul Starkey, president, Elan Home Systems Technology is always evolving. We have introduced many new products and created a whole division of AV electronics over the years to suit the market demand. It is hard to remember that we

were a specialised company for AV mounting solutions and stands in the past. As we progress, we see higher bandwidth items being displayed such as from VGA to HDMI to DisplayPort. We also see more eco-friendly equipment such as eco-speakers, eco-extenders and eco-distribution amplifiers. Delson Goh, sales director, ABtUS Considering our area of technology is imaging, the biggest change has been access to and the quality of visual displays. Increased accessibility to more visually appealing content at higher resolutions has inspired people to visually collaborate. They can therefore make better and more informed decisions and sharing of information. Anders Løkke, marketing director, projectiondesign The cost of implementing networked AV infrastructure and endpoints (networked AV transmitters and receivers) has fallen rapidly, making networked
AV systems very cost competitive. Mike Sims, director of marketing & sales, Attero Tech Revolabs didn’t exist in 2004. Back then audio in the enterprise wasn’t a focus, and as a result many companies suffered through unproductive meetings because people couldn’t hear each other. In 2006 Revolabs launched its first wireless microphone systems. The company has continued to improve its technology to the point where Revolabs’ wireless audio quality is as good as wired, but with the freedom and flexibility that small form-factor, wireless devices can offer. Martin Bodley, president and CEO, Revolabs Since ISE 2004 the demand for power, data and multimedia connectors at the workplace has increased enormously. In particular, the trend to time sharing and job sharing and the use of tablet PCs, laptops, iPhones etc. have led to the situation where every workstation today is an e-place. We have met these demands with our wide range of ‘EVOline the e-place design’ products. Siegfried Schulte, founder, owner and main designer, Schulte Elektrotechnik

Gabriëlle Offringa, presenting Digital Signage Combined with Interactive/Social Media 11.30-12.30, D202-D204
“There are endless possibilities within DS and networks to enhance interactivity, measure consumer behaviour and increase sales. But a lot of companies need to see the advantages before they believe and invest, while a lot of marketeers don’t know what is possible in terms of technology. Therefore they do not know what to look for and how to use it correctly. I am confident that DS and interactive media will grow because it is the future. The coming years may be crucial for leaders and innovators in DS today.”

“3D and 3D stereographic visualisation is becoming increasingly popular in almost any application area and industry. A lot of the buzz around it is hype. For many years, projectiondesign has worked with 3D visualisation, so is extremely experienced in the various 3D technologies, application areas and benefits. Our training session focuses on just this, covering how to use 3D as a business benefit, rather than as a novelty. We present realworld application examples and uses of 3D that hopefully inspire and propel AV integrators to take it a step further.”

Polish company AVTek is showing new projection screens, mounting systems, interactive products and presenter accessories, tailored to meet the current economic climate. The company has a new tensioned projection screen that will join its range of more than 70 different models, and is equipped with its easy mounting system that allows the screen to be installed by just one person, reducing costs for the dealer. In mounting systems, AVTelk’s key new product is a motorised, height-adjustable wall-mounting
system for interactive whiteboards. It is universal, so that any manufacturer’s board will fit, and can be equipped with speaker arms. The projector arm will accommodate any current short-throw projector. The AVTek motorised mount will apparently compete on price with a manual system and will be available shortly. Also new are AVTek speakers, equipped with full connection box, including VGA, audio and network inputs/outputs. These are designed to minimise installation costs and make connecting a laptop easy. news Products promise efficiency BTX
Genelec training today
The manufacturer is presenting its MaxBlox solderless termination system and ProBlox-D all-in-one connector system. BTX’s MaxBlox features a patented design that the manufacture claims is better, faster and stronger than anything else on the market. MaxBlox, it asserts, reduces installation time and cost by eliminating the need for soldering or crimping; and its sled-type bottom allows these connectors to slide, snap, and lock into the patentpending MaxBlox CD-MX915H hood for a secure cable-mount connection. The MaxBlox family includes HD15, DB9, S-video, and 3.5mm connectors, and now the new BTXMXRCA screw-terminating RCA panel mount connector. The BTXMXRCA requires only a strip tool and a screwdriver, and when used
alongside BTX’s other solderless connectors, labour time is said to be reduced dramatically. BTX says its ProBlox-D all-inone connector system is the AV industry’s first to incorporate multiple data, HD video, audio and control signals in a single connector. MicroWedges say let it rain EAW The MicroWedge8 (MW8) and MicroWedge10 (MW10) – on show at ISE today – constitute a smallformat continuation of the popular EAW MicroWedge Series of stage monitors. The MW8 and MW10 are suitable for applications that demand the high level of performance, audio quality, inherent feedback stability, smooth coverage and ergonomic design of the MW12 and MW15, but without the need for the MW12/MW15’s levels of power-handling and size. The MW8 is the smallest in the MW line of products, with an 8in woofer, while the MW10 features a 10in woofer. Both units’ coaxial d es i g ns p a i r t h e r es p e c t i ve

Systems integrators visiting ISE are being given the opportunity to hone their audio skills with Genelec. The audio technology developer is running sessions on its stand throughout the show, allowing integrators to get hands-on with products and see demos of acoustic simulation software for the fixed installation market. “The AV market is becoming increasingly competitive and integrators with a good background in audio have a real business edge, said Markus Kahelin, installation product specialist at Genelec. “Our short courses give the integrator – whatever their existing level of knowledge – the confidence to tackle all types of audio installation and deliver maximum benefit to their clients. Stand: 1K76
The manufacturer is showing its new Arcs II constant curvature line source loudspeaker, which is intended for medium to large rental productions. L-Acoustics claims Arcs II delivers increased power, bandwidth and coherence, along with flexible and predictable coverage, and that it offers the audience an incomparable listening experience featuring precision, clarity and impact. The biamplified enclosure is based on a two-way active design, and is the second generation of the original Arcs speaker. The company claims Arcs II offers a string of new improved features over its predecessor, including L-Acoustics’ K1 grade transducers for increased SPL (140dB), lower weight (50kg), and a new front grille which it says enhances the product’s durability as well as its appearance.
Tutondo by Atec
Less frustration, wasted time
A host of audio devices are being highlighted by Tutondo by Atec at this year’s ISE, including the S2R2UT multi-channel sound source with graphic display. The feature set of this extensively specified solution includes two RDS FM stereo tuners, two USB players, and communication interfaces for MondoT and building automation systems. Also available is the TRCD multiple sound source with FM radio tuner, CD player, card reader and USB. With IR control, the TRCD features a tuner section with FM radio and memory for 60 preset stations, and a player section with CD player, USB and card media, backlit display, and independent outputs with RCA connectors. Stand: 1E62, 1E66
It can be deployed horizontally or vertically, with a coverage angle proportional to the number of enclosures in the array (N x 22.5°); and also provides an asymmetrical coverage angle of 60°. L-Acoustics says Arcs II is suited to tightly packed FOH systems for medium-throw applications as it boasts a high SPL, low frequency impact and excellent stereo imaging. Other applications include a distributed system, a centre cluster for theatrical work, sidefill monitoring, stereo front fill, offstage fill, and delay systems for concert audiences in stadia and arenas. L-Acoustics recommends using its La-Rak touring rack and LA8 amplified controller preset library as a drive system for the Arcs II, which is now shipping. Stand: 7K200
Neets Until now, many schools have chosen not to specify a permanent AV control system due to the high costs for the hardware, programming and installation, says Danish control systems manufacturer Neets. Unfortunately, says the company, this often results in wasted time and frustrated instructors as teaching staff must rely on supplied IR remote controls, but these are often misplaced or fail to function because of damage or dead batteries. Also, when the instructors use different projector models installed in multiple classrooms, they must remember different IR control button layouts. In addition, projector IR remotes cannot control external
functions such as PIR motion sensing or external amplifier mute. Neets Control-BraVo is said to eliminate these frustrations with an intelligent and affordable alternative. Neets says that with its straightforward design, fast installation and simple configuration, Neets Control-BraVo offers a complete solution with an unprecedented price/performance ratio. An internal clock is programmable for auto off after a selected time interval – or the clock can work with an external PIR sensor to power off the system when no motion is detected for a specified time. Architectural solution for bar Martin Audio The new MKB bar and restaurant at Radisson Edwardian Guildford Hotel in south east England serves as a bistro-diner at lunchtime and a popular meeting place in the evening – and also encompasses a relaxed bar lounge. The venue’s multi-purpose remit called for a sound system able to provide background music during the day and higher-impact dance music in the evening. To satisfy the audio and aesthetic requirements, the venue opted for a Martin Audio AQ
Architectural solution specified by Gavin Miller of Bedford-based Kazbar Systems. Miller brought in Darrin South from installation team 33 Hertz. With Martin Audio’s Kevin McNally offering support, they set about designing a system that would function through the day at three sound levels, preset into the Martin Audio Engineer 818 DSP controller (and 8x8 routing matrix). This accesses the different zones into which bar, lounge and restaurant are divided. Stand: 1F110

Projecting the future Canon Canon’s Julian Rutland is seen here getting into the swing of things at an on-stand golf simulator. The manufacturer has supplied upwards of 30 projectors for golf simulation installations over the last year-and-a-half, many of them deployed in conjunction with technology from Sports Coach.
The advantages of using Canon projectors for such applications include “dependability and the quality of the image,” remarked Rutland, who is Canon’s visual communication product and solutions director. For those visitors who are familiar with the freeway, there is also the daily opportunity to compete for a Canon EOS camera. Amar Ali, CEO of Intagleo Systems, was the victor on Tuesday.
Other aspects of a visually arresting stand include a 4D simulation, produced in collaboration with CL Corporation (France). The combination of two Canon XEED WUX5000 projectors in a passive 3D configuration, with hydraulically operated seats and other physical effects such as water, yields an experience that participants are unlikely to forget in a hurry! The flagship WUX5000 offers a high 5000 lumens brightness together with a range of Canon lens options and features intended to make installation as easy as possible. The WUX5000’s ‘exceptionally high’ image quality is said to make it suitable for a wide variety of corporate, education, leisure and retail environments. The new projector is compatible with three different lenses: a standard zoom lens for most typical installations; a telephoto zoom lens for larger environments; and a wide single focus lens, which can be used for rear projection applications. ‘Learn three chords and form a band’ was a famous exhortation during the punk era, and it’s advice that might stand non-player Kris Van den Kieboom in good stead as he holds the BC Rich guitar he won during the NuVo Technologies prize draw yesterday. One guitar is being given away each day during the show. Attendees simply need to drop off a business card at the whole home audio specialist’s booth to stand a chance of being the lucky recipient. While den Kieboom – pictured here with NuVo marketing manager Desiree Webster – might not have much six-string experience, he is certainly familiar with the NuVo brand through his role as managing director of Belgium-based ABC Domotica Projects. Elsewhere on the NuVo stand, director of education Steve Horton has been introducing visitors to the latest additions to the Player Portfolio. Due to ship later this year, the GW100 Gateway and a total of three player options enable the delivery of a wireless whole home audio solution. Stand: 1P122
