Building a career in one-off events Opening ceremony: Birch was keynote speaker at the Dynamic Events conference
“Ceremonies begin as dreams and adapt to the reality of physics and finances,” according to Ric Birch, founder of Spectak Productions, who has worked on Olympic opening ceremonies since 1984, and will be in charge of Rio 2016. He told a well-attended Dynamic Events conference yesterday that a large number of Continued on page 4> ISE is a joint venture partnership of:

Schulz: The future lies in systems integration “Digital technologies will penetrate every aspect of our life”
In an historic landmark yesterday, Ingram Micro’s Gerhard Schulz delivered the first ISE Keynote Address, during which he exhorted integrators and distributors to add value by working together to create complete solutions. “Systems integration capabilities and businesses will take an increasing stake in the value chain and embrace substantial business opportunities,” predicted Schulz, who is senior vice president at the IT distributor.
Schulz: Integrators key to a change that is only just beginning In the keynote, entitled ‘Blueprint for business growth in the digital age: from volume to value… and beyond into verticals’, Schulz drew on the experience of Ingram Micro in order to illustrate the way in which the AV and IT worlds can
work together as the move towards a networked future continues. He suggested that the rapid rise i n s m a r t d i g i t a l d ev i c es a n d t h e g e n e r a l c o nve r g e n c e o f technologies made it difficult to d e f i n e t h e b o u n d a r i es o f t h e I T i n d u s t ry. “A p p l i c a t i o ns o f digital technologies have left the boundaries of computers and will penetrate every single aspect of our life and environment,” Schulz said. This has meant that, rather than relying on sales volume, the IT channel has increasingly had to add value by providing integrated solutions,
Digital signage has “huge potential” to help ‘bricks and mortar’ retailers compete with e-tailers like Amazon and Asos by allowing them to better reflect the new ways in which consumers are shopping, according to Florian Rotberg of Invidis Consulting.

CEDIA Region 1 New standards bigger than ever in AV education CEDIA has started 2012 in grand style with the news that its Region 1 membership levels have reached an all-time high. The Association – which co-owns Integrated Systems Europe – represents 438 members from across Region 1, as part of a global membership of more than 3500. No fewer than 87 new businesses joined the Association last year, with further growth in 2012 bound to be assisted by the decision to leave membership fees unaltered for the fifth year in succession. “Growing our membership in the teeth of this recession shows that we are delivering on this commitment [to ensuring value] and helping our members not just survive, but prosper,” said Wendy Griffiths, CEDIA Region 1’s executive director. Throughout the show, CEDIA is inviting members from certain nations to find out more about the Association in country-specific meetings. Interested integrators, trade suppliers and AV media from France, India, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa are welcome to
CEDIA Region 1 executive director Wendy Griffiths attend the sessions, which are taking place on the CEDIA stand. “We welcome all visitors who are involved in the residential custom installation sector to come and meet with us at ISE,” added Griffiths. “With a huge number of CEDIA training sessions taking place, they can, of course, experience our education programme first-hand. But they can also find out about our other activities – the white paper resources we offer, the CEDIA Awards and the Connect with CEDIA networking events that we run – which will help them in their business.”
Once again, ISE is providing a venue for InfoComm to highlight its ever-evolving approach towards education and industry standards, with a busy schedule that encompasses dedicated training sessions and expert-led seminars. news A career in one-off events Continued from page 1> ideas have to be developed for each event, some of which aren’t used or, as in the case of Barcelona, fall apart. In that case, a set of five rings collapsed 41/2 weeks before the Games started, requiring a radical re-think. Birch told delegates about dealing directly with the president of Mexico for its Bicentennial in 2010, and the corruption that bedevilled the Commonwealth Games in Delhi that year. The trials of several organisers, including a government minister, are pending. Despite the difficulties, the opening ceremony was a technical and creative success. These one-off events are produced under such pressure, with unbreakable deadlines. “I find people with a television background are best,” Birch explained, as they are more used to such deadlines than theatre or movie people. Although “the production of these major events is not something you can plan to have a career in”, Birch has worked continually on them for more than a quarter of a century.
Blackman ‘full of anticipation’ “Excited, full of anticipation, and a little apprehensive.” That’s how Integrated Systems Events MD Mike Blackman described how he felt when The ISE Daily caught up with him yesterday morning. A self-confessed technology fan, Blackman said that running the Integrated Systems Europe show is the best job he has ever had. “There are always new things to see – it gives me a buzz. My only disappointment is that I don’t get enough time to walk around the showfloor and see everything,” he enthused. He singled out the newly installed screen at the Europa entrance to the R AI. “This really shows what this industry can do –

Mike Blackman: ‘pre-registration numbers have been phenomenal’ there are still issues to be resolved regarding larger screen sizes. “Initially it will be difficult to compete with LCD in respect of cost,” he noted. Simpson wrapped up his address with a revealing section about new display possibilities arising from current technological developments. Combining old (phosphor) and new (UV laser) technologies, Laser Phosphor Display is now “maturing and developing a track record”, remarked Simpson. High-resolution tiled projection displays are also continuing to gain ground. collaboration within the network, ” he added. Integrators, with their technical knowledge and awareness of the needs of different markets, were the key to a change that is only just beginning. As an indicator of the scope for industry growth, Schulz concluded: “We have experienced the beginning of the digitalisation of our world.”

Look what we made happen with the partners that we have.” The biggest surprise about this year’s show for Blackman? “We always say we think we’ll do better each year, but our pre-registration numbers this year have been phenomenal – I underestimated how well we would do,” he admitted. “If you look at how the economy h as b e e n ove r t h e p as t f ew months, if we had just stayed still I would have been happy, but we’re going up again. That’s a pleasant surprise.”

Later in his address, Rotberg described a project on which his company was working with the world’s largest duty free store. The store is turning over some $1.5 billion each year – and research has uncovered the fact that 50% of purchases are made on impulse. Digital signage provides a means for guiding those impulses, Rotberg suggested. This year’s DiSCO conference – the fourth – focused on the
retail opportunity, rather than on the broader DOOH market it has p r ev i o u s l y c ove r e d . O l i ve r Schwede, Rotberg’s colleague, noted the technologies that are expected to transform the digital signage market in the coming years, including HTML5, Android and e-paper. The day’s agenda saw presentations on the use of gesture control and interactivity; on enabling s m a l l r e t a i l e rs t o c o m p e t e with “the merchants of cool”; on the opportunity to augment video with audio; and the retail innovations that are possible with digital signage. In another departure from previous DiSCO conferences, this year’s presentations were videoed and will be online shortly.

news Acoustics session The Introduction to Acoustics seminar at 11.30 tomorrow will be delivered by Michael H Weckesser of WADG. It is designed to give attendees an overview of the fundamentals of acoustics, which are described in terms of the sound wave, the relevant frequency range, the speed of sound and the evolving phenomena of these. “Acoustics are relevant for the performance of any room,” said Weckesser. “They are relevant for any sound reinforcement system to be designed into or just installed into any room. The parameters that define a room will be investigated.” Issues such as what will be performed in the room will be examined. Typical uses might include spoken word presentations, musical performances, reproduced music, or orchestral performances. The acoustical design of the room has to follow requirements in terms of reverberation time (RT), intelligibility, reflections (wanted and unwanted), clarity and many more. Where to position the absorbers in a room. How do these come together in one single room? What is essential? These are some of the topics that will be addressed. “In the end – don’t stop with the room design, integrate the sound sources into the design,” Weckesser said. “Position the speaker correctly. Choose the right loudspeakers and position these correctly. It all comes down to physics.” Part of the ISE Education Zone, the session will take place in rooms D202-D204.
Watchout, there’s a battle about! Dataton The newly refurbished Het Scheepvaartmuseum – the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam – was the site of a successful ISE Technical Tour yesterday. The museum uses Dataton’s Watchout system to control a 360°, oval-shaped projection using 10 edge-blended projectors with wide-angle lenses. It forms the centrepiece of ‘Voyage at Sea’, a five-room, 20-minute walkthrough cinematic experience in which visitors are taken on a journey through five centuries of Dutch maritime history. All the interactive exhibits feature AV, lighting and network design by local integration firm Rapenburg Plaza. “Because of the way they had to be mounted and distributed in the room, it was impossible to create an equal physical overlap between each of the 10 projectors,” explained Jorinde Wiegel of
Rapenburg Plaza. “So the edge-blending r e q u i r e d a g r e a t d e a l o f t we a k i n g , including some adaptation of the actual content itself.” The movie is played back through QuickTime ProRes software and is run through five dual-motherboard PCs, each running two licenses of Watchout. Vox Pop We ask: Why does ISE continue to flourish when other industry shows are growing in single figures or flat-lining?
Specialist shows are going to go one way or another. Good ones will hit a critical mass and will be relative to the market and it is self evident that ISE has achieved this. Mike Blackman really does a good job and leads a very enthusiastic team. ISE are clever enough to employ good people and good marketeers. The team is always looking for new markets and innovations to bring new countries in and to address new audiences and markets such as architects, education, visitors attractions and even oil and gas. InfoComm is involved in delivering the educational programmes at ISE, which shows leadership in the scale and breadth of the education offered. Our education team have built this up over the years, which brings in more and more courses and attendees each year. For me a trade show is not about buying and selling, it’s more about empowering and educating the audience. In our industry, the pace of change is so dramatic. At the moment, we are seeing strong industry trends towards IT and AV integration. Greg Jeffreys, president, InfoComm International ISE is a completely unique trade show in that it combines all segments of the pro AV and commercial markets with the residential AV market, creating one single powerful sales and showcase event. Many of our key UK, European, Russian and Middle East customers and all of our distributors attend this show, which makes our investment in the show extremely profitable in terms of the measured RoI. On top of this, and in spite of the continuing uncertainty that hangs over the larger global economy, spending on technology, and AV in particular, shows solid signs of continuing, and this speaks well for the future of ISE. Paul Starkey, president, Elan Home Systems ISE has proven itself to be at the pinnacle of the AV industry and I
believe it reached critical mass a few years ago. The show attracts more visitors and exhibitors than any other and is considered to be the place to be as a serious AV company. The location of Amsterdam is attractive and easy to travel to. Anders Løkke, marketing director, projectiondesign ISE offers visitors the opportunity to see manufacturers from every aspect of the audiovisual sector. Other shows only offer exposure to a sub-set of the market and with the demand on visitors’ time to deliver results for their companies in a very difficult economic climate, visitors need to decide which shows to attend and ISE is by far the best use of time. Jason Creminds, CEO, signagelive We, as a company, believe that ISE has retained a high standard of organisation, attracting all serious companies old and new as exhibitors, giving them an opportunity to show what they offer. The rapid technological developments of the market have their chance to be communicated at ISE to a very big audience. Also, if someone wants to keep up with this rapidly developing market, he definitely wants to visit ISE. Cleopatra Argiriou, exports controller, Unitech Systems In my opinion, the ISE show has represented accurately the stream of convergence between AV and IT, along with the changes that were coming at the same time. Mariano Arranz, president and CEO, Tecco

years from date of manufacture. “ M a k i n g a t a b t e nsioned surface in this manner eliminates the puckering that has characterised the edges of tab tensioned screens made by Draper and other manu f a c t u r e rs f o r ye a rs, ” remarked John Pidgeon, Draper president, in a letter announcing the improvement to Draper dealers. “Prior to making this decision, we cycled a t a b t e ns i o n e d s c r e e n made in this manner over 30,000 times with no tab failure.” Stand: 1M22

New Cloud-based signage modules LED Impact
Camvine Customised Cloud-based digital signage modules are being introduced by Camvine at ISE, with the company saying that Codacall and Codachannel present further resell opportunities for channel partners. The new Codacall and Codachannel modules are designed to provide a wide variety of businesses, corporate and public sector organisations, and digitalout-of-home (DOOH) advertising agencies with powerful tools to communicate with their target audiences. “Codachannel and Codacall have been developed as stepping stones for clients requiring dedicated digital signage solutions,” said Steve Hales, head of sales and marketing at Camvine. “They represent examples of Camvine’s ability to customise digital signage solutions and they can be incorporated into existing systems. We have been looking forward to demonstrating these modules to international distributors and resellers for the first time at ISE Amsterdam.” Codachannel is said to enable DOOH advertising network owners to rapidly and efficiently control live and dynamic content
across many displays. The module drives displays, mixing live data feeds, custom messages and highimpact visual content. Typically, playlists rotate split screen layouts in short, 10-second time periods. The content mixes advertising with entertainment and live feeds such as news, weather and travel. Camvine describes Codacall as a video and audio announcer, enabling messages to interrupt playlists to make visual and audio announcements. The messages are editable and can be triggered exter-
nally by either manual or automatic intervention. The module is used in waiting rooms and is targeted at an audience environment where automated messaging is beneficial. Before the show, Camvine announced the availability of a free 30-day trial for users to experience its standard Coda digital signage product. Stand: 10S122

Louis Vuitton LED screen curveLED The exhibitor’s local distributor, Utram, has recently installed a sizeable LED curtain into a new French perfumery store in the country’s capital. A number of Utram technicians were involved in the deployment of the 49sqm LED curtain into the shop, which is called Sephora, and is a new member of the Louis Vuitton Group, located in the quarter La Madeleine in the centre of Paris. The technicians mounted the 7m-wide flexible LED screen behind a staircase and over two floors. Its LED tubes also are also 7m high and have a pixel pitch of 40mm, and the screen adapts exactly to the height of the wall. All of the electronic components are situated behind the wall
in a dedicated room to ensure that there is nothing visible from the outside. Based in Düsseldorf, curveLED was founded in 2008 by Thomas Tennagels and Stefan Arens. Tennagels was in the event technology field for 15 years and is creative head of the company. Arens responsibilities include marketing and distribution. According to the manufacturer, its systems can be ‘infinitely high and infinitely wide’ making it ideal ‘for all those who need something special at big events’, such as concerts, TV productions and trade fair exhibits, or as an architectural element. We ask: What are the hottest trends in digital signage at the moment?
Interactive technologies are redefining digital signage; creating an environment where people are able to interact with the information around them is becoming paramount. Use the right technology and signage can be so much more than a digital poster. Imagine a consumer picking up an item from a shelf, triggering instant onscreen product information and product comparisons – all this is now possible but the market is only just realising it. The latest edition of our Inspired XPert platform, the ISXPT-2000, has capabilities that go beyond conventional digital signage by giving users the ability to orchestrate these messages with lighting, audio and other triggered events through AMX NetLinx control. Kevin Morrison, managing director – Europe, AMX
Interaction. Thanks to the innovation of iPhone and iPad, users now expect more interaction while using their machines and gadgets. Interactive displays have become one of the most powerful tools today not only in the office, but in schools as well. It replaces the traditional meetings, classrooms instructions and training with a new style of business and learning. That’s proven to enhance meeting efficiency, academic performance, collaborative discussion or learning, and team building. BenQ offers several interactive flat panel solutions from 42in to 65in which are designed with safety and flexibility in mind – easy to install in any office or classroom to maximise the presentations and learning experience. Adams Lee, sales & marketing director, BenQ Europe

We ask: If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
Fewer owner protocols and more interactions among manufacturers to enable products to interact and enrich the market with OEM products. Luca Barteri, marketing dept, Link I would encourage display manufacturers not to offer free digital signage software, as generally it is offered to close the sale and leaves the reseller and end user frustrated with the lack of support and functionality. Jason Cremins, CEO, signagelive Maintain the right pricing policy. To accept incredibly low margins and crazy payment terms for big projects because of the difficult market situation is the wrong way to do business. Pricing should be based
on the real value of the product/service offered. Vendors are penalising each other by doing these kinds of deals. Carlos Rupérez, sales & marketing director, Sirkom Europe Stop selling on price! I get upset and quite angry when I hear about the sort of margins being made out there. Our industry has exceptional knowledge-based skills and service resources and I just wish that this was reflected in the margin and profit. I really want my customers to make good money on our products, providing they are passing on value and service to our end users, who in turn receive a positive experience. I think this is also linked in with attention and service. Too many customers are neglected after the sale. I think we all need a massive lesson in relationship selling and seeing the customer as a longterm business model, which will lead to more profitable sales. Jeremy Stewart, sales & marketing director, TeamMate
Hyper player advances SpinetiX Announced at ISE today is the HMP130 Hyper Media Player. Its manufacturer, Swiss company SpinetiX, says that the HMP130 brings greater functionality and performance than its predecessor, the HMP110, which the HMP130 replaces. The HMP130 player has been designed for use with SpinetiX Fusion content management software. Fusion runs within the HMP130 and the company says it offers 30% more computational power. As a browser-based programme, Fusion displays instant information including videos with tickers and animations thanks to more powerful processing from SpinetiX technology partner Texas Instruments’ DaVinci video processors. These are located in the heart of
the digital signage appliance. SpinetiX offers lifetime warranty on the HMP130, which uses an open Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) platform and performs the functions of mixing streaming video, encoded video or images and audio file formats with other dynamic information such as RSS or XML. The unit is small, weighing only 190g (6.07oz) and uses just 3W. “We’ve worked closely with Texas Instruments to develop our next-generation Hyper Media Player technology,” said Serge Konter, marketing manager at SpinetiX. “Coupled with our lifetime warranty, future proof and userfriendly benefits, customers will benefit from more powerful digital signage for many years to come.” Stand: 10K120

The manufacturer is now able to produce customised TFTs in special aspect ratios. These can be stretched or very wide TFTs, which can be used in a range of applications where standard sizes are not suitable. These TFTs can be used in stationary or mobile applications, indoor or outdoor. AEG MIS says it offers both complete displays and software solutions, as well as OEM assemblies for companies to adapt the product to their own individual requirements. The company says that its stretched TFTs expand the range of display options available to many users in passenger transport applications as well as commercial applications. Because displays are being increasingly used for many applications due to their versatility and ability to incorporate HD as well as graphics and video images in multi-media presentations, AEG MIS is now accommodating special installations in confined spaces, which are designed to be visually attractive and eye-catching. Examples include various height-restricted areas; areas where vertical mounting is necessary, such as in doorways; or even against pillars in open concourses or shopping areas. Stand: 7F195

In-shop navigation friendlyway
Being exhibited at ISE this year by interactive developer friendlyway is Store Navigator, a turnkey solution for ret ail stores whic h smooths in-shop navigation for visitors. The technology allows consumers to search for – and be
guided to – the necessary brand, service or product. Featuring a moder n touchscreen application executed on friendlyway touch-screen terminals or displays, Store Navigator can provide an overview of any floor in the store. Unlike ‘classic’ terminals, says friendlyway, the solution provides much greater possibilities for the presentation of the product range available in a given store. In addition, displayed content can be amended at any time via t he administrative interface. Features of the system include an interactive product catalogue and the ability to display brands and service points. It can also be used to search for products, brands and service points. A detailed interactive floor-plan is available and the system can also display context-sensitive advertising as a slideshow, animation or video. There are also evaluation tools to calculate the number of clicks for the selected product groups, brands and periods, and centralised data management for several terminals. Stand: 9A119

The latest 360° video display from DynaScan Technology of fers t he equivalent area of a 120in LCD screen. The DS0816 measures about 2.75m tall and 1m in diameter, and outputs a bright 750 cd/m image. It has been designed for indoor applications with high foot traffic. An optional lightbox base is available to provide greater visibility through the use of backlit posters. The addition of the DS0816 expands DynaScan’s 360º product range to nine different production displays. “Many of our customers have shown a great interest in larger indoor video displays while maintaining a small footprint. We believe the DS0816 will fit this need very well,” said David Huang, DynaScan’s director of business development. The DS0816 uses the company’s
patented spinning LED technology for greater image quality. It uses a drum with several red, green and blue LED modules. As it spins, the system controls the lighting of each pixel at a precise location within 1/100th degree accuracy. The effect results in a high-resolution, bright image that is claimed to have a pixel pitch far smaller than other LED display on the market. The first DS0816 video displays have been installed in the SaintLazare train station, Paris, to show railway arrival and departure times. Stand: 11C80

software, the more ‘integrated’ this industry can become. Chris Bundy, director of marketing for Atlona
We ask: Many manufacturers have jumped on the app bandwagon, but what should be the ultimate destination?
Apps are like the new remote control; everything comes with one, but it only works with the product it came with. From an end-user’s perspective, this is similar to having five remotes for your home theatre. I think the ultimate destination for the AV industry would be a standardised API that everyone can use for development. Such an API would allow one app to integrate with any available product in a given system – ultimately providing a universal app. The further we move from proprietary toward open source
The ultimate destination will be a fully integrated and unified communication platform that ensures the dynamic distribution of content to any communication device and the interaction between all these devices. Plug and work with Schulte EVOline The work place is now defined by the power point rather than the desk, according to Schulte Elektrotechnik, which has developed a plug-and-work concept it calls e-place (the electronic working place). Its EVOline products put sockets for power, multimedia and data where people need them, using a safe and individual combination of plug-in systems, suitable for new buildings and renovations. It should help to eliminate the unsightly tangle of cables, provide protection against data loss, and avoiding the risk of power failures cascading through an entire network, says the developer. Schulte’s EVOline products come in a variety of form factors, such as risers that pop up for plugging and can be pushed back down to hide them while plugged. Tinopolis Group, the UK’s largest independent media group, used the manufacturer’s Universal Videohub 288 to broadcast the 2011 Rugby World Cup, held in New Zealand, across Wales. Tinopolis Group also incorporated a wide range of Blackmagic Design’s OpenGear Converters and Mini Converters to support its HD infrastructure used in broadcasting the games. T inopolis Group company Sunset & Vine Cymru won the tender to provide Rugby World Cup programming for the S4C Network, and worked in New Zealand for the duration of the tournament, sending all matches and rugby related programmes back to Wales via satellite and optical fibre. Live programming and highlights were then produced at the Tinopolis studios and headquarters in Llanelli, Wales.
I would like to see consolidation of the software tools for the different app platforms. Many people are choosing Apple products as the target platform, but there is an ever-increasing acceptance of Android and Windows-based solutions out there. It would be great to have cross-platform development tools that still provide access to the benefits of the particular device being used. Adam Neale, director, 7thSense Design With regard to unified communications, the most likely destination (mid-term) is the embedding of most existing UC functionality in the underlying infrastructure and the layering of social media class apps on top. John Geaney, CES portfolio lead, unified communications, HP Technology Consulting The app bandwagon has shown us that customers want attractive, well designed, tactile, convenient and easy-to-use products and interfaces.
The Universal Videohub was used to route all incoming HD satellite feeds from New Zealand into record playbac k servers and edit suites, as well as routing all studio sources into a vision mixer located in the company’s production suite. “We used an iPad to control t he pre vious Videohub, but this time we added a combination of software control panels and Blackmagic Design’s Smart Control panels,” explained Tinopolis’ chief engineer, Peter Harston. “This allowed for rapid input source changes to the EVS as well as the re-routing of satellite receivers, VTRs, servers and vision mixer outputs.” Harston said he wanted to install a system that would cope with 3G, to ensure the company’s system would be future proof, and that the Universal Videohub was the perfect solution. “We integrated the Universal Videohub into our workflow, not just because of the attractive price, but also because the equipment needed to fit the bill in terms of both performance and operability,” Harston concluded. Apple has set the bar high in terms of what our customers expect from other brands, and our ultimate destination should be to learn from this, and produce products that are attractive to the iPad generation. Renny Vos, marketing & communication manager, BMB Electronics Surely the only reason for deploying new technology of any type is to make things easier or more efficient. There seems little point doing things just because you can. Video collaboration makes enterprise-class showing LifeSize The company is presenting ClearSea, its enterprise-class client/server solution for desktop and mobile video collaboration. LifeSize says ClearSea is designed to make HD video a practical, manageable reality for enterprises and growing businesses. ClearSea allows users to deploy full 1080p HD video collaboration across an entire organisation with thousands of users, including mobile and remote workers. It works with Windows PCs and Macs, Android and iOS; and is available as hardware or as virtual machine software. LifeSize says ClearSea is totally interoperable, allowing connection via any standards-based video collaboration or infrastructure, not just LifeSize platforms. Key features include the ability
to make person-to-person video calls easily from almost any device; and host videoconferences for up to three participants with no need for added hardware or software (with an option for up to 26 multiparty connections). ClearSea is NAT and Firewall traversal for seamless connection across different platforms and infrastructures, and features realtime data sharing and call recording. LifeSize says the product’s centralised management makes it easy to integrate video collaboration with other infrastructurebased services. Costs are also easy to control, LifeSize claims, using licensing per port, which means the user doesn’t pay for redundant or unused accounts. Stand 12B94, 12C92
When the Lombardy region of Italy moved all its offices to the Palazzo Lombardia, the new headquarters of the regional government of Lombardia, it chose to equip the 38 meeting rooms of the Palazzo with three Taiden HCS-5300 Series d i g i t a l infrared wireless conference systems, giving a total of more than 400 HCS5300 series contribution units. The regional government is said to be considering the adoption of a Taiden digital IR wireless conference system for the second phase of the project. With advantages like easy set-up and removal, convenient operation and maintenance, neatness and elegance, and no impact on the building structure, wireless conference systems became the first choice for the project Palazzo Lombardia. However, as meeting rooms are quite close to each other and, given the high probability that conference systems may all operate at the same time, wireless conference systems based on RF technol-
ogy (including WL AN) were believed to be inappropriate and infrared transmission technology became the preferred solution for the wireless conference systems. This is because IR systems do not interfere with each other. Beyond this, infrared transmission avoids eavesdropping because infrared transmission does not generate electromagnetic radiation which could be used outside a venue to monitor a meeting illegally. Moreover, the sound quality of IR wireless conference systems based on analogue audio transmission technology was apparently deemed to be unsatisfactory. Taiden says that its digital IR wireless conference system merges the advantages of both digital processing and wireless infrared transmission – meaning that the Taiden HCS-5300 series turned out to be the solution for Regione Lombardia’s Palazzo Lombardia project. unified communications “Deploying is likely to involve significant complexity”
News Analysis Ian McMurray finds some unresolved technical issues but considerable incentives for integrators
Unified communications heads for the mainstream Where videoconferencing is an ‘island application’, unified communications becomes integral to an organisation
ot long ago, the AV manager of a major multinational organisation was heard to say that, if he never heard about unified communications ever again, it would be too soon. He was, of course, joking – but, as with all the best jokes, his remark had a serious point: everyone is talking about unified communications. While there are many entirely valid definitions of unified communications, David Willie – who is business manager for unified communications at integrator Saville – has a definition that is both representative and succinct. “Most consider unified communications to encompass technologies including presence, chat, voice, desktop videoconferencing, room-based videoconferencing and telepresence,” he says. “What makes each of these technologies unified is the ability to connect and/or to communicate from any
N
to any. Importantly, this needs to be within organisations and between organisations.” “Typical elements might include anything from telepresence, telephony systems, PCs, laptops, smartphones, digital signage, recording and broadcast systems,” adds Roland Dreesden, managing director of integrator Reflex. “It’s not just about the hardware elements, though, but also the systems that bring everything together – virtualised bridging, live streaming, learning management systems and so on.” “Most forward looking thinkers understand that the unified communication application has value, and makes information workers more productive,” says Andrew W Davis, a co-founder of Wainhouse Research, the company behind the Collaboration Summit that coincides with ISE. “The concept is to make decision making more streamlined while allowing more people to have inputs. Unified communications should allow
workers to find the right resources to resolve issues in faster time. Faster decisions and better decisions are where the benefits will come from.” It is, then, a very different concept from videoconferencing: where videoconferencing has historically been an ‘island application’, unified communications, implemented appropriately, can be – should be – integral to the way an organisation works. As such, deploying it is likely to involve complexity – something which AV integrators may find off-putting. According to Willie, they need not be alarmed. “It simply requires a new understanding and appreciation that these technologies are different and are not as scary as they first look,” he suggests. “It’s simply a case of deploying the correct products alongside the correct professional capabilities and services to deliver a different type of solution. AV integrators have always embraced new technologies and although
the skill sets are different, they simply need to build internal professional capabilities to deliver these new solutions.” Integrators like Saville and Reflex have been gearing up to address the market for some time. “We believed it was an area of huge opportunity for us at the end of 2009 and built a strategy to address it into our three-year plan,” explains Dreesden. “Why? The technology is better, people adopt it at home, students are encouraged to distant learn, lifestyles improve, productivity increases, the environment benefits, it creates safer working environments. Where do I stop?” he laughs. “The list is huge!” Davis suggests that there may still be time for others to equip themselves to address the opportunity. “I think we are on the cusp of crossing the chasm and seeing many of the unified communications trials turn into volume deployments,” he says. “The market probably won’t hit its stride till 2013 or 2014, but 2012 should be where we see lots of major companies joining the bandwagon as customers.” And, despite his supposed reluctance, that may well include the AV manager who never wanted to hear about unified communications again.

VoIP conference phone unveiled today Revolabs is unveiling its FLX VoIP, billed as the first wireless conference phone designed for VoIP networks. The FLX VoIP supports a wide variety of IP switches, and Revolabs claims that it is the only conference phone that supports the clarity of HD audio while providing the freedom of wireless microphones and speakers. The product integrates directly with most IP telephone switches following the SIP standard, so new features previously only available through digital switch environments, such as voice mail alerts and ‘do not disturb’, can now be offered with the FLX VoIP. Revolabs says the FLX VoIP is suited to small and mid-size conference rooms. Stand: 12B92
New CCU for conferencing systems Presenting its new Central Control Unit (CCU) for its DCN Next Generation and DCN Wireless conferencing systems is Bosch Security Systems. The new CCU allows both wired and wireless delegate units to be integrated into one system. Each control unit is now capable of controlling up to 245 wired and 245 wireless delegate devices. Bosch says that the CCU has been enhanced with the addition of several cost-saving features. The output power has been increased to enable it to drive more delegate units, reducing the need and expense of additional power supplies required for larger systems. The CCU can also be configured as a network controller, eliminating the need for a dedicated network controller which is typically required in large multi-CCU
systems of up to 4,000 delegates. New functionality has been added to the DCN Wireless Discussion system. It now features a voice activation mode, which allows microphones to be switched on automatically once delegates begin to speak, thus enabling more spon-
taneous and open discussions. Further enhancements include the 128-bit AES Rijndael encryption for the DCN Wireless, which gives optimum protection against eavesdropping. Bosch Security Systems’ new HD camera solution, for use with DCN Conference solutions, is also on show. It includes a purpose-designed HD Conference Dome camera with HDSDI output, which is said to give clear images without any delays. According to Bosch, this new solution means installers no longer need go to the effort and expense of developing their own interfacing software and of purchasing third-party CCTV cameras, as it provides them with a price-competitive, off-the-shelf solution that meets all their customers’ HD conferencing needs. unified communications A more connected future for hospital Teracue A new installation featuring Teracue’s H.264 SD/HD encoders at the University Hospital Aachen, Germany, allows students located in multiple theatres to participate in the same lecture. The technological upgrade is said to be a response to the ‘massive’ recent increase in student numbers. The point-to-multipoint broadcast is made possible by a video distribution system on an IP net-
work, which allows a video data stream to be fed to any number of end-devices. As a result, lectures in the University Hospital Aachen’s teaching department can be brought simultaneously to a maximum of six lecture theatres. For this purpose, the lecturer’s laptop and their camera image is transmitted onto projection systems in the individual rooms in splitscreen mode. To facilitate the display of both SD and HD signals, the university
has been provided with a number of ENC-300-DVI and ENC-200 encoders from Teracue. Suitable for a variety of video training and e-learning purposes, the ENC-300-DVI broadcasts H.264 and MPEG-4 streaming and supports DVI and HDMI signals (up to 1920x1200 pixels). The subsequent conversion of H.264 HD streams into RTMP Flash is accomplished using a WOWZA media server. Stand: 1E80
IR audio solutions showing Listen Technologies The Infrared Wireless Listening range of products from Listen Technologies includes a stationary transmitter, an IR radiator and two receivers in stethoscope and lanyard format respectively. Listen Technologies’ IR solu-
tions can deliver up to four simultaneous channels, which the company says makes it easy to communicate in more complex situations, and to larger audiences – without sacrificing privacy. According to Listen, IR is a great choice for auditory assistance, language interpretation, audio description, and multi-channel audio distribution in venues where multiple rooms make frequency allocation impractical. The Listen LT-82 is the heart of a stationary IR listening system. It takes the desired audio signal and transmits the signal via coaxial cable to one or more IR radiatoremitters. The LT-82 can be operated in mono or stereo on one of four different carriers; with up to four LT82 units connected to provide up to four simultaneous mono or stereo carriers to the radiators. It also generates DC to power up to two LA-140 radiator-emitters. Two LT-82 units can be mounted in a single rack space. Stand: 3A122
Boss on TV VBrick Enterprises have invested heavily in the latest telepresence technology – which can be impressive when participants are located at HQ or a major corporate location. The experience is often less compelling, however, for remote employees or telecommuters who are often relegated to just listening in. VBrick says that it can let those remote users see the boss for themselves – and not break the enterprise’s bank doing it. The company has just announced R3.0 of its H.264 Distributed Media Engine (DME). R3.0 offers a SIP User Agent that can be invited into the video conference just like a regular user, according to VBrick. The DME appears as just another member of a video conference. Once connected, VBrick’s DME can tap into the video session and extract the audio and video. It converts both and sends video across the network in one or multiple streaming protocols to support PCs/Macs, iPhones/iPads and a variety of Android devices. While other conferencing vendors offer their own streaming servers, VBrick says that its solution has the advantage in price, scale and interoperability. Stand: 10Q116

US church modernises with HD Vaddio As part of a major HD upgrade project, Porché Advanced Systems has equipped Trinity Baptist Church in Lake Charles, Louisiana, with state-of-the-art Vaddio pan/tilt/zoom camera systems. “We first encountered Vaddio at InfoComm when we were looking for a high-definition video feed from the main Worship Center to [contemporary worship area] the Cavern,” recalled Jason Ryder of Porché. “We ended up installing the Panasonic HE-100 PTZ camera and at first that worked really well.” More recently, in 2010, the completion of the high-spec TK’s Place area raised the notion of upgrading to HD in the main Worship Center. The latter facility was
ultimately equipped with two 22ft 1080p HD projection screens, a trio of Vaddio HD-19 PTZ cameras for supporting-angled shots, and a studio-quality JVC 1080p manned camera. Control is provided by two Vaddio Precision Camera Controllers. “I’ve had a lot of experience with Vaddio in other installations,” explained Ryder. “As far as a robotic PTZ camera goes, nothing beats installing with Cat5 and still getting a high-quality, high-definition image. Price is always a big factor and because these cameras are reasonable, we were not only able to get more shots, we could also get the additional controllers.” Stand: 1F122
The manufacturer is introducing its EK 1039 bodypack receiver, which is designed for tour-guide, interpreting and assistive listening applications. Sennheiser says the new product boasts an enhanced transmission thanks to its adaptive diversity reception. It also features a full audio frequency response of 2515kHz, and is fitted with a copy function, which means once programmed, its settings can then be transmitted via infra-red to other receivers. The EK 1039 enables users to transmit on up to 32 channels per frequency range; and the manufacturer claims that the unit’s switching window makes it easier for the user to find a free frequency in difficult situations. Designed with ease-of-use and versatility in mind, the company says the EK 1039 is an ideal choice for instruction and refereeing situations in sports, or as an assistive listening receiver for houses of worship, theatres and conference centres. The new Digimic system also includes the company’s newly developed DDol interpreter console, which incorporates the design and ergonomics of the DOLV, which was developed with the support of EU interpreters and has suc-
cessfully established itself in the marketplace. The Cmic CSV has a host of features including five pre-selectable relay channels and one original; three selectable outgoing channels; a cough button; an LED hearing guard; speak slow, auto relay, and help functions; and an operator and/or chairman call. The system can be operated together with a gooseneck microphone and headphones or headset. Its interpreter functions are directly integrated into the Digimic conference system. Stand: 12A92
Video conferencing app Comm-Tec Distributor Comm-Tec is presenting VidyoMobile, a multipoint video conferencing app for the iPad2 and iPhone. The VidyoMobile is available on the Apple App Store and allows users to offer mobile workers the ability to participate in company video conferences from their iOS mobile devices (and Android devices as well), expanding access to conferences that already connect laptops, desktops, telepresence and HD room systems. This includes interoperability with Polycom, Cisco/Tandberg, and other H.323 and SIP endpoints. Comm-Tec says the VidyoMobile app is for business customers that currently offer their employees access to Vidyo’s software-based infrastructure through their enterprise IT department or through service providers who offer Vidyo as a service. The manufacturer says users just
need to download the app from the store and log in to their existing account to begin using VidyoMobile on their mobile device. Like all Comm-Tec’s Vidyo endpoints, this product can accommodate more than 100 participants in a conference; and VidyoMobile displays up to four participants at a time on the iPad2. Additionally, participants are displayed using the active speaker feature, which automatically displays the current and last few speakers. Stand: 2A70

news In control See new AVB DSP system in action Roland AV live mix Tutondo by Atec A fully integrated audio mixer, video switcher for live production and Web streaming, the VR-3 is being demonstrated at ISE today. It is described as a unique product that combines the power of Roland’s audio and video technology into one unit and expands the growing lineup of AV mixers and streamingready solutions from the company. The production of typical live events today, whether large or small, requires a wide variety of equipment: audio inputs from mics, audio mixer, video sources to a video mixer, computer inputs, video preview monitors, capturing the event in some form, and also streaming it live online. As a USB video/audio class device, Web streaming is achieved by simply connecting to a computer running a live streaming service. The reduction in hardware equipment, setup time and connection complexity ensures, says Roland, a worry-free, easy-to-use solution for any event. Stand: 3A136

points, providing system design capabilities for unlimited scenarios, including centralised, distributed and hybrid-type applications. Integrators have the option of customising Tesira with up to eight DSP cards (16 DSPs) in a single chassis and a maximum of 420x420 audio channels over a scalable digital media backbone (AVB). Biamp will be hosting product demonstration sessions on its stand at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00 today and tomorrow, and at 10:00 and 12:00 on Thursday, to
showcase Tesira’s partition features and AVB functionality. These sessions will give show attendees an opportunity to speak directly with Biamp’s sales and technical team, and experience the full range of Tesira’s capabilities. Stand: 1H80
Cinema completes digital deployment Doremi Odeon, the largest cinema chain in the UK and Ireland, has completed its digital rollout. The two-year project involved all 113 Odeon cinemas in the UK and Ireland, with 890 screens now using Doremi DCP-2000 digital cinema servers. “Throughout this programme
we have had great support from our partners, Doremi Cinema. That, and the reliability of their cinema servers, has helped to make this period of great change run smoothly, said Odeon COO, Roger Harris. “This is a milestone for digital cinema in the UK, added Brent Watson, Doremi European customer services manager.
The rollout will continue as Odeon expands. Due to the chain’s recent acquisition of five Reel cinemas, 26 more servers are now heading for installation and a further six are needed for a new Dublin cinema. The Odeon Group operates 2,119 screens at 225 sites across Europe, making it the largest cinema group in Europe. Stand: 11N51

news Adding new switchers to the mix Exhibitor View Datavideo
Four switchers launch today. The SE-600 is a low-cost eight-input SD switcher, also available in handcarry format as the HS-600; the SE2800 HD/SD switcher has 12 inputs with 4:2:2 10-bit broadcast quality and is small enough for mobile or OB use; while the flagship SE-3000 has 3D DVEs, highquality multi-screen multi-view output, chromakey, dual PIP, and a full size control panel keyboard as well as a PC control interface. The user-friendly HS-600 and SE-600 are packaged to be highly mobile, making them useful for event AV teams or productions on the run, says the manufacturer. Productions can go live within a few minutes. They are based around composite inputs to allow producers
to use legacy acquisition equipment, thereby reducing costs. Both switchers offer HD support, ergonomic surfaces, intuitive interfaces, a high number of inputs, and high-quality output. The SE-2800 provides all the essentials for professional HD
vision mixing: flexible multi-screen support, wipes, picture in picture and on-screen clock. The SE-3000 adds further functions, with four keyers, 40 wipe patterns,
with variable border width, colour and softness, chromakey support, a built-in DVE transition engine with 88 transitions and two still stores. “Datavideo has extended its range to provide producers at every level of the industry with a tool ideal for their programme making,” said Rob Op de Beek, managing director of Datavideo Technologies Europe. “We have been manufacturing switchers for years and work hard to understand what professional users really need. “Datavideo does not believe in a ‘one-size-fits-all solution’, with unnecessarily complex features,” Op de Beek said. “Our philosophy is to develop high performing, attractively priced systems that closely match a particular producer’s requirements.” Stand: 11C84
projectiondesign
World first in DLP projection The Norwegian manufacturer is revealing its new F35 AS3D, which it claims is the world’s highest resolution active stereo 3D DLP projector. The F35 AS3D boasts 1920x1200 pixel resolution at full 120Hz refresh rates, and displays fully uncompressed 3D with more detail than any projector in its size, price and performance category, says the manufacturer. Projectiondesign claims it creates the best and most lifelike 3D experience available anywhere. Based on the popular F35 wqxga model, the F35 AS3D is suited to a string of applications including scientific visualisation, virtual reality,
visitor attraction and training, and simulation. In all cases, the company claims, users will benefit from being able to make quicker and better-
informed decisions, saving them time and money. “The F35 wqxga was a stunning technological achievement; now the F35 AS3D version takes this innovation to a new level of image
detail,” said Roger Carver, manager of DLP’s front projection business at Texas Instruments. The F35 AS3D features a wide range of high-resolution projection lenses and incorporates projectiondesign’s RealColor colour management suite for on-site calibration. Image quality can be guaranteed over any number of projection channels. The projector offers brightness levels up to 7,500 ANSI lumens, and features a range of configuration options. The manufacturer also claims switching between 2D and 3D is seamless. Stand: 1M27
Hagai Gefen, president and CEO, Gefen
Developments in digital connectivity Gefen is showcasing its new PACS (Professional Automation Control System) at ISE ne of the most compelling trends we see shaping the future of digital connectivity is IP control. The ability to seamlessly switch between multiple sources and displays all connected on a network is of paramount importance. The multi-room, video anywhere/anytime model has had a major impact on our product development. Most of Gefen’s hardware include IP control connectivity. This includes the first product in the industry to be officially certified by HDBaseT: the HDMI over Cat5 with Ethernet extender, announced in 2009. It uses just one Cat5 cable to deliver 1080p full HD with IR and Ethernet up to 100m, sending Ethernet connectivity over the same Cat5 cable as the HDMI signal. Today, being integrated on the network offers greater possibilities for new business than ever before, particularly the ability to monitor and maintain the entire system
O
remotely using any Web-enabled interface with access to the network. In anticipation of this type of connectivity, and the need for an inherent management solution for all hardware connected on the network, Gefen is showcasing its PACS (Professional Automation Control System) at ISE. This provides access to all key functions in the installation, through RS-232, IR or IP control. Users can select sources, control volume, distribute audio/video and more from any browser on the network, delivering access 24/7. We feel that ISE is the best venue to showcase these types of innovations. This is where integrators from around the world converge to find the most cuttingedge solutions to their challenges. We see this as an exciting time. Rapid evolutions present opportunity as much as challenge, and we can’t wait to unveil what is in the works for AV integrators in 2012. Stand: 1M63

Phantom plays a key role Key Digital The new Phantom Series of HDMI p r o d u c t s f r o m Key D i g i t a l includes an HDMI 4x4 matrix switch and a handshake fixer. The KD-HDMSW4X4 HDMI matrix switch “gives dealers and installers the best option for ‘stepin’ matrix switching without sacrificing quality, performance, or reliability”, said Dan O’Donnell, national sales manager for North America. It is claimed to be a versatile, flexible system, “guaranteed to work with any number of HDMIcompatible sources and displays”, which should translate into faster install times according to Key Digital president, Mike Tsinberg. “The KD-HDMSW4X4 enables the installer to be proactive when constructing his installation since this new matrix switch has eight active outputs allowing flexible system integration.”
It can switch four independent sources to four independent outputs, with both HDMI and Cat5 outputs (over two Cat5 cables) available simultaneously. External serial IR routing is available to control displays remotely. The system supports all resolutions up to 1080p, plus 3D and 4K HDMI 1.4. The system can sort through a variety of signals and ensure compatibility between devices, while extending 1080p HDMI reach to 20m. In addition, as many as three units can be daisy-chained for longer distances. There is full audio control on each output including: volume, multi-band equaliser, and lip sync, plus an audio return channel. It can also carry 100Mbps E t h e r n e t b e t we e n t wo H D M I devices. Stand: 5V130
The new Niagara Platinum speakers from Waterfall Audio are described as a timeless design using glass and aluminium, and are the result of three years of research and development. “With our constant quest to reach more customers we have designed a n ew ve rs i o n o f o u r a l r e a d y Famous Niagara Diamond,” said Waterfall Audio’s founder and CEO, Cedric Aubriot. “Our new Niagara Platinum becomes more affordable, but yet has the same performances and attention to detail, and can now be matched to Victoria Evo for great cinema experience.” The speakers cost €19,800 per pair, are 120cm tall and use an enclosure of 10mm glass with a platinum tint. The safety-treated glass allows the speaker’s drivers to seemingly float on air. The custom-built mid/bass Atohm drivers are equipped with a patented Acoustic-Damping Tube, and the unique Glass Horn tweeter is mechanically decoupled from the main enclosure to offer a detailed, naturally open sound, supported by an ultra-low-frequency passive driver in the Niagara’s solid aluminium base, says Waterfall. The Glass Horn tweeter requires more than 10 hours of intense machining and hand fin-

ishing, and is so delicate that it is packed separately for shipping in a specially designed padded box. The speakers have peak power handling of 500W, with recommended amplifier power of 60W250W, and a frequency response 36Hz-28kHz (+/-3dB). Each weighs 45kg. Stand: 5S122
The new IDU610 dedicated dock for the Opus 6 Series allows users to enjoy content stored on their iPad, iPhone or iPod anywhere in an Opus-equipped home. The native video output capabilities of Apple devices work with the Opus IDU610 to allow intuitive navigation and a control interface using album art via an attached TV or touchscreen. The all-metal dock has two Cat6 connections, which connect to the IDM610 control module, and requires no separate power supply. Like the newly launched NRM610 network audio module, the IDM610 simply plugs into one of the three expansion ports on the rear of the Opus MCU610 master control unit for an efficient integrated solution. These new digital music additions to the Opus 6 Series should enable installers to deliver new entertainment possibilities to clients, while requiring very little installation time. The Opus 6 Series is designed as the robust backbone for HD distribution, control of virtually any source device and integration of third-party lighting, HVAC, blind, CCTV systems for a complete home entertainment and control system. For flexibility, it supports integration via IR, RS-232 and IP via Ethernet. Stand: 5T98

The absence of connectivity options that one might expect from a dedicated controller is a limitation. But…

questions the value of the iPad as a primary control interface

Keep taking the tablets “The tablet revolution does not yet threaten to fully overturn the old order”
s a long-time contributor to IE Residential (produced by ISE Daily publisher Intent Media), I’ve been wellpositioned to track the rapid rise to prominence of the iPad in CI circles. And prominent it certainly has become – indeed, such is its status these days that I’ve taken to guessing the number of minutes into any given interview that the first reference will occur... Strictly speaking, I should be counting allusions to ‘tablets’, but
A
the ubiquity of the iPad in this market means that the two terms are – for now at least – interchangeable. In the fashion of a BBC presenter confronted with an unwelcome reference to a specific brand, it behoves me to point out that ‘other tablets are available’. But while several recent interviewees have expressed positive expectations about one particular rival platform – Studio LGL’s Laura Lazzerini suggests that “the Android platform will register an increase” – the jury has yet to return a verdict regarding the overall prospects for non-iOSbased devices in CI. If the iPad’s popularity is a given, though, what about its capabilities? Explaining the findings of Frost & Sullivan’s Emerging Home Automation Markets report to me in 2011, research analyst Hammam Ahmed confirmed the general suspicion that, as the tablet boom continues, “sales of high-
end touchscreen user interfaces will decline dramatically”. There was, however, an important caveat: “In each installation, there will still be at least one typical [dedicated] user interface. What the iPad will do is replace the user interfaces that are sold in addition to the typical user interface.” The absence of certain connectivity options that one might expect from a dedicated controller is a crucial limitation. But so, too, is the tablet’s multipurpose nature: attractively portable, it is open to being used, misused or mislaid by various members of any one household. For Steve Moore from systems integrator SMC, the primary drawback revolves around the difficulty of “ensuring that the tablet boots up and lives in the application that provides control. With most apps out there, the environment is such that the apps can only run one at a time.” SMC majors on whole-house
integrations, and as such the ‘shiny new toy’ tablets are largely restricted to ‘auxiliary’ status alongside one or more dedicated controllers. Will it be ever thus? Moore, for one, can envisage a day when the tablet is able to assume primary control function for lower-value projects: “When there is more IP control and more content mediated through the Cloud, it will absolutely happen.” In the shorter-term, he says, expect some of the tablets’ design aesthetic and gesture control to inform the creation of new CIoriented systems. Increased diversification suggests that many of CI’s bigname manufacturers have already accepted that their business models will have to evolve. But while the tablet revolution heralds very real challenges, it does not yet threaten to fully overturn the old order of which the dedicated home controller is the accepted monarch.

AVC Group appoints distributor
Three products from Greensound Technology’s new range of glass speakers, where glass is used as the vibrating surface that creates the sound. are on display today. The manufacturer claims that the radically different design approach delivers a superior harmonic and high-fidelity sound compared with traditional tweeterand-cone-driver enclosures through a combination of specially engineered glass and a base structure. The Serac speaker with Bravura subwoofer is Greensound’s topend glass speaker product. The Serac stands at 1.66m high, weighs 112kg, and is available in a stereo or 4.1 surround sets. The Orbis speaker with Circa subwoofer is the next model down, and is a more compact design, but still with top-quality performance in mind, albeit for smaller environments. The Luno speaker with Cube subwoofer is the smallest of the three systems, yet still stands over
The AVC Group brand portfolio (Niles, Elan, Xantech, Sunfire and Aton) has appointed BMB Electronics as its exclusive distribution partner in the Benelux region and various Eastern European markets. The AVC Group’s custom AV industry brands offer a broad selection of products to suit the custom installation, home AV and systems integration marketplaces. Leading items include Xantech IR emitters, Sunfire speakers and subwoofers, Aton home automation systems, Niles multiroom audio systems, and the Elan g! control system.
1m high and weighs 36kg. Greensound says all three systems provide a consistent listening performance, no matter where in the room the listener is positioned relative to the speaker. The manufacturer also insists that they guarantee a sophisticated level of performance, as the components will not break down over time; and because this technology employs sound projection through glass, each speaker is able to deliver true 360° sound. Not content with throwing most of the electro-acoustic rulebook out of the window, Greensound has also designed its speaker systems so that they can be used wirelessly if desired. The supplied transmitter is simply plugged into any amplifier’s speaker output. At this point, the power of the amplifier becomes irrelevant because the signal is transmitted to the speaker’s internal digital amplifier. Stand: 7V210
Cineak goes modular The Cosymo chair represents a new wave of modular sectional sofa seating from Cineak, a leading provider of custom-designed theatre, lounge and sofa solutions. “We are delighted to have such an experienced partner as BMB to work with in this region. We believe this is a win-win for ourselves, BMB and our mutual customers,” said the AVC Group’s Conrad Gonthier. Willem Bok, owner of BMB Electronics, added: “The AVC group’s products and solutions fit BMB and our customers very well and tick all the boxes of what we need from a supplier to be able to properly service our customer base to provide everything they need for a complete installation.” Stand: 1P22, 1N73, 1P35

made by several manufacturers. Jentry Wittkamper, Draper’s export sales manager, tells me our new system has dramatically reduced the issue of indentation marks on the screen border. Of course the main force behind our upgrade was improving durability. So, prior to making this decision, we cycled a tab-tensioned screen made in this manner over 30,000 times with no tab failure. We were so impressed by the performance, we decided to warranty all our tab-tensioned screens against tab separation for five years from date of manufacture. What really matters is how customers view the changes. Brian Cassley, our regional sales manager for Europe, reports that his customers like the updated appearance of the new tensioning system; overall flatness is improved and the tensioning is attractive to look at. hen a customer is looking for a rolldown projection screen with the flattest viewing surface possible, screen manufacturers have traditionally recommended screens with a tab-tensioning system. On a motorised or crankoperated screen, a vinyl material is stretched as the screen descends, pulling the surface flat. While this offers a flat viewing surface, the manner in which screens have been made by several manufacturers has also led to issues like puckering, and sometimes to separation as well. After hearing from our customers about this issue, we have developed a significant improvement in tab-tensioned motorised projection screens, which we are demonstrating throughout ISE 2012. Every Draper tab tensioned screen surface (including the tabs) is now CNC cut as a single piece, and the tabs are then folded and RF welded. The result is a much stronger tab with no possibility of separation. This approach eliminates puckering that has characterised the edges of tab-tensioned screens
AMX says it believes that an unprecedented level of control capability can be realised around its core technology, and at the heart of this approach is the company’s newly expanded Enova range. Additions to the Enova family include the Enova DGX 16 and 32 digital media switchers, which the manufacturer says are the industry’s first modular digital media switchers with a built-in central controller. The company says its DGX 16 and 32 models are designed to cope with copy protection issues, centrally manage connected devices, and overcome many of the

Also new is the Enova DVX3150HD; an all-in-one controller, AV switcher, scaler, analogue to digital signal converter, twisted pair transmitter and amplifier with built-in professional grade audio processing. AMX says the DVX-3150HD is the only all-in-one presentation switcher that seamlessly handles both analogue and digital AV – making HDCP as easy to work with as analogue – and delivers perfect video and audio, in a single 3U box. Designed to meet the needs of conference rooms, classrooms and auditoriums, the manufacturer claims that the DVX-3150HD is poised to change the future of AV room solutions. Stand: 2C50

HomeWorks QS offers New generation control energy saving for lights system is IT not AV based Lutron Home control specialist Lutron Electronics is launching HomeWorks QS at this ISE. The exhibitor says the new system offers “unprecedented capabilities, including temperature and audio/visual control and the ability to monitor and save energy”. The whole-home control system includes expanded control functionality, the ability to operate window coverings via Lutron’s latest robust, wireless Clear Connect Radio Frequency technology and the capability to dim high-efficacy light sources with confidence, says the developer. Lutron’s Dynamic Keypad and Slim Architectural Keypad are designed to allow users to control HomeWorks QS with ease. Both come in a variety of colours and finishes. The new Dynamic Keypad, with its wall-mounted touch interface, includes control over HVAC and AV equipment throughout the home, from a single loca-

Crestron tion, in addition to controlling light levels. “Not only does ISE 2012 enable us to showcase our new HomeWorks QS whole-home control solution, but visitors can see the wealth of integration possibilities available through Lutron’s wide range of wired and wireless devices,” said Lutron head of marketing EMEA, Andrew Bechgaard. The company’s Grafik Eye QS system, complete with KNX integration, is also on show and can be integrated with Lutron’s Sivoia QS shades system, occupancy and daylight sensors, as well as a KNX keypad for meeting and conference room control. By incorporating KNX, the open source platform for all applications in home and building control, Lutron is offering installers the potential to link their technology to an even wider range of applications. Stand: 5R86
Developed and engineered like an IT platform, rather than an AV system, Crestron’s MC3 3-Series control system is powered by the Core 3 OS. The 3-Series platform has been designed to provide a foundation for powerful integrated building technology and advanced home control. The MC3 is said to combine the agility and speed of a computer operating system with the reliability of a network appliance, enabling real-time multitasking to seamlessly run up to 10 i n d e p e n d e n t p r o g r a ms simultaneously, all communicating with each other on the same platform. A fully integrated 3Series platform facilitates more processing power, faster speeds, more memory, enhanced security and multitasking capabilities designed to simplify the design and implementation of integrated building management and home technology. When performing upgrades to any single part of the control system, it is no longer necessary to take down and update the entire system. Because each module is partitioned, a restart or upload of
one program does not affect the others – resulting in less programming and no downtime. Upgrades can now be performed on any individual subsystem, for example AV, lighting, climate control and security systems, while allowing the other programs to run seamlessly in the background.
“As an industry, we have to start thinking about AV as infrastructure, rather than as a stand-alone entity,” said Crestron’s Robin van Meeuwen. “The decision-makers are no longer the traditional AV manager; they’re IT managers, facilities managers, architects, real estate developers and builders. They want all their systems – lighting, HVAC, AV, building management and others – on a single platform, but until now no one has been able to offer a solution.” Stand: 1F2, 1F6, 1F7
eDIN – Mode Lighting’s latest innovation in lighting control – now has Floor Plan control available as a plug-in Web app. The new development further expands eDIN’s graphical control options. The storage of all building plans as Web pages within the eDIN’s Web server allows the user to navigate through a building and control the lighting with any device featuring a built-in Web browser. There is no requirement for any specially installed software. The whole building can be controlled globally. Local scenes can be triggered in each room, while individual channels may be altered as required. In addition, the occupancy of a room can be checked by selecting the desired presence sector. According to Mode Lighting, the new feature means that it has ‘never been easier to obtain the perfect level of control and allow full flexibility to the end-user’. Stand: 1P4

energy management Vox Pop We ask: In which market sectors are you seeing the strongest demand for green solutions?
Green initiatives are becoming a concern in many industries, including digital signage. Since the creation of Innes in 2005, the demand for green solutions has increased. Innes addresses three kinds of markets: point of sale, transportation and institutional. The latter is increasingly concerned by green solutions. Indeed, many businesses and public services have ecological charters and are engaged in initiatives to reduce paper signage. At the same level, schools and universities are promoting sustainable development. Innes’ goal is to respond to customers’ requirements by offering lower-power consumption players which ensure better durability and efficiency without restricting functionality. Franck Dupin, CEO and founder, Innes We have discovered a strong demand for green solutions in the refurbishing or electrification of new buildings. The traditional way of distributing power and data through a space to the
work places required a lot of cabling; this means a lot of copper, PVC, waste, high fire loads and costs. We propose the Decentralised Electric Distribution approach, which can save up to 40% of the mentioned costs, materials and fire loads. Siegfried Schulte, founder, owner and main designer, Schulte Elektrotechnik In the installation market, we are seeing a great deal of demand for energyefficient products – especially in the field of amplification from localauthority and other publicly funded applications. Here, we see a demand for greater efficiency that’s driven both from a government target dictat (lower carbon footprint, etc), as well as pressure on lower lifetime cost-ofownership in procurement. This affects not only the construction sector but also fit-out, including installed AV. Jon Alkhagen, managing director, Lab.gruppen Commercial lighting controls have to be one of the biggest growth sectors for us. With more governments offering incentives to businesses that reduce their carbon footprint, incorporated with the cost of energy continually increasing, it’s an attractive solution for businesses of all sizes. Daniel Strzelecki, exports engineer, Mode Lighting
Smart buildings stay a giant STEP ahead “AV has the ability to ‘humanise’ the smart building”
News Analysis Adrian Pennington finds evidence that technology is getting smarter at making buildings energy efficient Communication infrastructure is permanently on: to save travel miles by air or by car, to bring decision makers together, to connect project groups, to connect knowledge carriers over time zones or even city zones, your devices and infrastructure have to be always available. Fortunately, the energy used in a building is not subject to the same demands. With oil, gas and electricity prices going through the roof, the economic argument for energy efficiency is stronger than ever, but are management solutions keeping pace to enable even greater levels of control, and of energy efficiency? “While AV solutions provide a large variety of data and statistics there is no out-of-the-box management tool which translates video calls, voice calls, collaboration sessions into saved tons of carbon emissions and lost time,” observes Dekom CEO Jörg Weisflog. “Saving energy, time and carbon emissions are very important rules and aims,” he qualifies. “Any company that does not see this is not leading its sector anymore.”
While there are no magic fuel gauges on Unified Communications systems to show energy saved, there is a solution to analysing the efficiency of a building, in the form of SBT (Smart Building Technologies). “SBT is IP connectivity that provides data from all these systems to one central place to be analysed and used to make the building perform better – automatically,” explains Allen Weidman, sustainability officer for InfoComm International, and executive director of the STEP Foundation. “Data analytics shows trends, exceptions, equipment faults, enhancement opportunities operations, and information to justify investments in energy-saving measures.” The world of AV control and management has begun crossing over into building energy management. AV system integrators already bring together multiple components to one central location and interface. Adding IT, HVAC, telepresence and so on is simply connecting another set of low-voltage wires to the dashboard.
“More importantly, given that AV deals in the qualities of sound, motion and light on a daily basis, the AV industry has the opportunity to ‘humanise’ the smart building by providing each occupant with information about their impact on the building’s operation,” says Weidman. “This not only includes digital signs in the lobby showing peak energy use for the month, but energy use by the hour, for the day and year, and historical trends – we have the capability of putting that information on everyone’s computer and smartphone.” According to Weisflog: “Intelligent and clever AV integration makes daily work, support and therefore life easier. To cross into building energy management will take more time. I don’t see energy consumption data and its management in a lot of professional and even consumer devices.” For sustainable best practices for the AV industry, look to the STEP Rating System and Guide (www.thestepfoundation.org). Its central message is that energy efficiency is only one part of a sustainable AV system.

New series of projectors Mitsubishi Electric New for this ISE are the 7000 series large venue projectors from Mitsubishi, along with advanced interactive pen versions of its popular ultra-short throw devices. Mitsubishi’s latest projector range, the 7000 series, is available in three formats: 1024x768 pixel XG A; 1280x800 pixel WXG A; and1920x1200 pixel WUXGA. Based around a long-life, nonorganic liquid crystal panel, the 7000 Series offers a light output of up to 6000 Lumens at 2000:1 contrast ratio. Its lamp life of up to 4000 hours and less than 0.3W power consumption in standby mode
makes the 7000 Series economical to own and run, says the manufacturer. The 7000 series also boasts an ultra-low dispersion ED lens which offers greater light transmission efficiency than glass and improved optical accuracy across the entire image. Mitsubishi says its Super Resolution image processing algorithm dynamically interpolates missing data from an input signal to create greatly improved clarity. Using the manufacturer’s Natural Colour Matrix, images appear sharp, with natural-looking colours. Stand: 2A24 , 2A25
Vantage
Video switcher debut The new 1080HD video switcher from Vantage is designed to take any analogue or digital high-definition source and delivers a crisp HD picture to as many as eight displays throughout a home or business. With a whole-home video distribution system, users are able to view content from their Bluray/DVD player, satellite receiver, cable set-top box, video server, or internet TV device on any display in the house without the need for individual sources at each location. The Vantage 1080HD supports up to 10 sources of HD component video per unit, transmitting
through a single Cat6 cable to any display within 250 metres. The device also has the ability to support additional 1080HD video switchers for a maximum 64 zones of HD video and audio. Each chassis is field-upgradeable to digital HDMI though a simple card insert, due in the middle of the year. The system is controllable through the Vantage iPhone/iPad app or any R TI remote, enabling users to switch between sources, change channels, or operate any input device from the palm of their hand anywhere in the world. Debut for CorioMatrix
Christie
The C3-340 Series CorioMatrix is making its ISE debut, offering what T V One describes as an industry first firmware-based video routing, switching and video conversion platform. Sixteen AV universal module slots are available and the CorioMatrix automatically recognises the modules inserted as an input or output module. There are no dedicated input or output slots when using 2-channel DVI-U or 3G-SDI modules. It can be configured with up to 64x64 input/output 3G-SDI/DVI-U connection combinations. This flexibility, according to TV One, allows end-user configurations to be based on their own needs, instead of the router forcing a certain setup and limited configuration. Additional DVI-U or 3GSDI modules can be added later in open slots without having to re-set the router. All AV modules are hot
swappable and recognised for immediate auto configuration. The CorioMatrix also provides up-, down- and crossconversion between a variety of analogue and digital video formats thru 3G-SDI. The modules selected determine what format will be accommodated and the matrix size. Signal parameters of the incoming video may be adjusted. All settings are stored in nonvolatile memory and are retained even when power is switched off. User-defined presets are also available to customise settings for various applications. All the functions can be controlled with serial connection via RS-232/422/485, USB or IP. Windows software is provided. A front panel LCD option is said to make direct setup easy, and third-party controllers permit a choice of control options. The unit is housed in a standard 4RU case and features an optional redundant hot swappable internal PSU and power inlet. Stand: 3C106
Chief projector mount On display are the RPA projector mount and SpeedConnect accessories from Chief, which the company says help simplify the installation and maintenance of floor projection installations. Chief says its RPA projector mount is easily converted from a ceilingmounted wall projection solution to a floor projection solution using a few standard SpeedConnect accessories, such as the CMA365 truss adapter, CMS003 fixed extension column and CMA273 threaded end cap. Chief’s RPA series is said to be the top-selling projector mount in the industry, and features independent roll, pitch and yaw for quick and precise registration. It also features an easy projector disconnect which provides convenient lamp and filter access without affecting registration. Stand: 2A52

What does the ISE show mean to you? Lutron has been an exhibitor at ISE for a number of years, it’s a firm fixture on our annual calendar. The conferences and variety of exhibitors provide an opportunity to learn about the latest innovations and the buzz from the show floor is palpable; everyone who attends is here for
a common purpose, to see and experience the latest the industry has to offer. What do you think are the key developments in, or threats to, your market sector at the current time? Energy saving technology continues to be key with developments in daylight harvesting being particularly
important to Lutron with our integrated light and shades technology. Partnerships with other manufacturers and the move of cloud computing into the home technology environment is another interesting opportunity. Threats, I’d like to say there weren’t any but the current European economy is an obvious talking point, although home automation is still a sector in growth. Why should attendees visit your stand at ISE? We are launching HomeWorks QS,

news DVI dual-link option RGB Spectrum
Rako Having recently extended its range by launching a wired system, Rako now enables the installation of wired, wireless or combined lighting control systems. Users can choose between the added functionality of wired (with more scenes and LED tellback panels), the convenience of wireless, or a combination of both to form a seamless hybrid system, says the developer.
Keeping up with higher and higher output resolutions can be daunting for even the most sophisticated video wall and multiviewer users, suggests ISE exhibitor RGB Spectrum. However, the manufacturer says it ‘stays on top of the market for you’, and has released its first DVI dual-link option for video wall and multiview processors based on the
projectiondesign F35 WQXG A DLP projector with a native resolution of 2560x1600. The DVI dual-link option is available for the RGB Spectrum MediaWall 2900 video wall processor and SuperView 4100 multiview processor. The MediaWall 2900 offers two DVI dual-link outputs, while the SuperView 4100 uses only one. Eight video-graphic windows can be displayed simultaneously in realtime, says the developer. Four
720p sources, at native resolution, fit into a single 2560x1600 output. For dual edge-blended projector applications, the MediaWall 2900 delivers overlapped outputs. Although there are computer graphic adaptors that support DVI Dual-link output capability, they commonly display only graphics and applications running on a single computer, RGB Spectrum points out. With the MediaWall 2900 DVI dual-link processor, multiple videographic sources can be displayed together at any size and position on one or two screens. Stand: 3B106

A notable recent installation saw the multi-purpose live entertainment facility La Esfera (The Sphere) in Alcobendas, north of Madrid, being equipped with a comprehensive Yamaha/Nexo digital audio system. Versatility and the need for the FOH multicore to be routed around the edge of the auditorium were among the chief priorities confronting equipment supplier and installer Milan Acústica, prompting the company to specify a Yamaha console, with distribution via EtherSound to a Nexo loudspeaker system. “Milan Acústica already knew the PM5D, which they really like the sound of, although this installation didn’t need a console of that size,” said Jacinto López of Yamaha Music Europe Ibérica. “It was also very important to have a console which any sound engineer could
walk up to and use in the shortest time possible.” The deployment ultimately chosen by Milan Acústica was an EtherSound-based system comprising a Yamaha M7CL-48ES mixing console with six AD8HR remote mic preamps, an NAI48-ES network interface, and two DA824 digital-analogue converters. To deliver a clean and open look at FOH, the company selected a loudspeaker system of six Nexo
GEO-Ss per side, augmented by PS8 and PS10 front fills installed on the lighting truss and four PS15 sidefills. “A Nexo NX242 speaker processor controls the system, meaning that the M7CL-48ES EtherSound output is fed straight to the system, without going through any unnecessary AD/DA conversion. This ensures that the audio quality is as high as it possibly can be,” said López. Stand: 1H6

Humantechnik Billed as a mid-range infrared emitter/modulator, the Pro IR-200 from Humantechnik is designed to ensure attendees at conferences or in courtrooms receive direct, clear communication without sacrificing security. The Pro IR-200 is designed to cover areas of up to 185sqm. In addition, two slave transmitters can be added for additional coverage of
185sqm each. Placing a slave on the opposite side of the same room allows participants to move freely about the space. A single Cat5 cable carries power and signal to the slaves. The manufacturer says that a sturdy digital communications bus between master and slave units reduces possible interference during transmission. The error display on the master supports secure installation,
Racing to be heard at Silverstone Ateis Public address/voice alarm company Ateis recently deployed its new, networked PA/VA, the IDA8, for the Silverstone race circuit’s newly opened pits and paddock complex in Northamptonshire, England.
Building services contractor NG Bailey specified the Ateis system, which was then installed by fire and security specialist ADT. Representing its first major deployment, the IDA8 is being used for general dayto-day paging and announcement work as well as providing comprehensive safety and evacuation capability, should the need ever arise.
PA/VA equipment was installed in five different sites around the three-storey building, which was designed by Populous, the architects also responsible for the London Olympic stadium. The complex houses 41 garages, the race control centre and podium, hospitality suites, a media office and a new spectator enclosure near the end of the lap. Stand: 7F205
Lang shows its Touch The latest developments in gesturebased on-screen control are being shown by Lang, the company that launched the radarTouch system in 2009. Following on from primeTouch – a system designed for standard screen sizes – is primeTouch custom, which can be made to order. There is also a multiTouch display, based on six vertical 60in LCD screens in a seamless configuration. Next to it is primeTouch lucent with the new Barco Folsom ImagePro HD scaler. It is a box with a 46in transparent screen. Inside is the real product and on the see-through screen it is possible to obtain information with an interactive multiTouch device. Invited guests can see the world premiere of the curved multiTouch screen, based on a 6x3 Christie Microtile wall. Stand: 1H74
Premier Mounts The new CMF cable flatpanel mount from Premier Mounts uses a patent-pending MagnaGuide magnetic guided mounting shoe that makes installing it ‘as simple as hanging a picture frame’. The mount manufacturer also has two new mounts for video walls. MagnaGuide allows the cable adapter to snap onto the back plate and slide easily into place, says the manufacturer. This makes it easy for an installer to secure the flatpanel in the right position without having to see where the mounting base is located on the wall. A kickstand feature holds the flatpanel up to almost 11cm away from the wall connecting AV components. The V-shaped backplate mounts on a single stud and can hold flatpanel displays up to about 30kg with a VESA mounting pattern ranging from 200x200mm to 600x400mm. Stand: 4S56

We ask: Why does ISE continue to flourish when other industry shows are growing in single figures or flat-lining?
The ISE show reflects the larger trends that are shaping the future of our industry. The move towards integrated events that meet multiple market needs, which is what ISE effectively does, helps all segments of the AV industry to connect and conduct business at a single event. It allows for manufacturers, dealers and distributors to make efficient use of their time and resources. This show is symbolic of the same trend that is reshaping the future of the manufacturers who serve these markets. Increasingly, the future belongs to those companies who can best marshall their capabilities to provide R&D, resources, multiple and complementary product offerings, and a solid business basis for partnership with distributors and dealers. The era of the boutique solutions provider is fading; the biggest among us will survive these economically uncertain times and grow in the years to come. Smaller companies, many with very compelling technologies, will be consolidated within larger companies who will enhance the value of product offerings. Johannes G Rietschel, CEO and founder, Barix Pulling a geographically diverse collection of exhibitors and attendees, ISE stands out as a show that merges the needs, wants, and ideas of a variety of cultures and markets. Appealing to such a wide array of interests, and
highlighting the best of what different regions and channels have to offer, this show is consistently ripe with incredible opportunity. That’s why it keeps people coming, and keeps growing. David Rodarte, president and CEO, NuVo Technologies ISE is a good quality show and is very well established to serve the European digital signage market. They have passed the ‘critical mass’ and it’s a show you simply have to attend. Serge Konter, marketing manager, SpinetiX As a US manufacturer, ISE gives us unprecedented single-point access to a broad base of countries, burgeoning markets and new customers, not just within the EU, but also to global stakeholders in the AV industry who look to Europe as an accessible and open common meeting place. The continuing market integration of the European Union and the greater-world beyond is embodied by shows like ISE and assists in the creation of a marketing environment that is familiar, comfortable and profitable to manufacturers. Steve Olszewski, vice president, Stealth Acoustics
