WE ARE 11… The World Cup was a bit of a disappointment, wasn’t it? Are we allowed to say that at the start of a Fixtures Guide with ‘FIFA’ written all over it? Probably not. But the point isn’t some off-message rant about football suddenly being terrible, or the World Cup losing its glister. The point is that most competitions don’t deliver the winner you want. Your team invariably lets you down. Matches between two seemingly wonderful teams can be drab. And England can, quite often, be shit. The good news is, proper football is nearly back with us. Yes the World Cup’s the biggest show in town, but for many of us it’s just an enjoyable distraction. We go through the motions, but there’s no real emotion. We don’t really feel it: the excitement, the despair, the joy, the misery. Not like we feel it for our teams. The World Cup’s a summer fling, our club commitment’s a marriage - only more likely to last. The other good news is that the return of proper football means we’re nearer to the return of FIFA. FIFA 11 hits UK retail on October 1st. Among a host of new features, perhaps the most eye-catching is Personality+. This sees players’ abilities mirrored within the game; they behave and play like individuals. As well as all-pervasive enhanced realism, it means football’s elite players will be able to exhibit their unique skills: Kaka will glide through defences, Iniesta will pass teams to death and Rooney will hold off opponents before blasting in from distance. FIFA 11 also sees the introduction of Pro Passing, which means accuracy is determined by a gamer’s ability on the control pad as well as the individual skill and situation of the player in possession. FIFA 10 won 50 sports game of the year awards and FIFA 11 is a big step forward. Yawn, right? So linear. Never fear, with the Premier League kicking off next Saturday, a season of unpredictability is just around the corner – and, in fact, just over the page…

MANAGER: ARSÈNE WENGER LAST SEASON: 3RD GROUND: EMIRATES STADIUM CAPACITY: 60,361 WEBSITE: ARSENAL.COM Last year, third place was seen as a disappointment. This year will it be the pinnacle of their ambition? Arsenal are the Premier League’s enigma. They constantly receive plaudits for their style, but there are now viral gags about their empty trophy room. Under the leadership of Arsene Wenger, the desire to win seems to come second to a credo involving pretty patterns and using competitions below a certain level as hothouses for young talent. All of this may well be thoroughly admirable, and the fans buy into it to some extent (or at least pretend to, when their season melts away in the springtime), but, they also want some bragging rights back. They want to win something. With players like Van Persie, Fabregas and Arshavin, the cliché that ‘on their day they can beat anyone’ remains true. But Arsenal don’t need a day, they need this to be their year.

ASTON VILLA BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES 2010-2011

MANAGER: MARTIN O'NEILL LAST SEASON: 6TH GROUND: VILLA PARK CAPACITY: 42,640 WEBSITE: AVFC.CO.UK Martin O’Neil, it seems, has decided to stay, so it’ll be interesting to see exactly what persuaded him – other than the absence of a better offer. It’s not that Villa are a bad side. They finished strongly last year and were in the shake-up for a Champions League place until the last couple of weeks. But that may have been their last chance. Randy Lerner may be that Premiership rarity, a popular American owner, but he won’t spend his way into the elite and the squad seems decent but a bit… limited. And at the time of going to press, it looked increasingly unlikely that Villa would resist Man City’s attempts to sign their supposed star, James Milner. If he goes, Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor will have to step up, Fabian Delph needs to return from injury to fulfil his promise and then maybe Villa can bag a cup. Whisper it, it’s been 16 years since they notched…

MANAGER: ALEX MCLEISH LAST SEASON: 9TH GROUND: ST ANDREW’S CAPACITY: 30,009 WEBSITE: BCFC.COM If last season had been a handicap, Birmingham may well have won. They only finished 9th, but all the sides above them were ‘big’ teams – and being ‘best of the rest’ was no mean feat. They were also unbeaten at home against the top five. Again, impressive. The early summer signing of giant Serbian striker Nikola Zigic should provide a focal point for an attack which has plenty of pace and some experience but sometimes lacked a cutting edge (only five teams scored fewer goals). At the back, it will be interesting to see what difference Joe Hart’s absence makes. How many points was the league’s best keeper worth last year? The unknown quantity here, of course, is the new owner, Carson Yeung – and how much he’s prepared to spend. There’s talk of up to £40m being made available to Alex McLeish. If so, they could move from being best of the rest to worst of the best. These days, that’s progress.

BLACKBURN ROVERS BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES 2010-2011 AUGUST 14 Everton (H) 15:00 21 Birmingham (A) 15:00 28 Arsenal (H) 12:45

MANAGER: SAM ALLARDYCE LAST SEASON: 10TH GROUND: EWOOD PARK CAPACITY: 31,154 WEBSITE: ROVERS.CO.UK Ah, cuddly old ‘Big’ Sam; loveable old Blackburn; everyone’s second team. Okay, not quite, but without getting the media plaudits of, say Birmingham, they still finished in the top half (just) and picked up some fine results along the way – they were one of only two teams to win at Villa, beat Arsenal at home and probably ended Man Utd’s title hopes with a 0-0 draw at Ewood Park. Heading into the new season, Allardyce has already identified the need for a new striker – a need highlighted by the fact that David Dunn, operating in midfield, was last season’s top scorer. Rumours persist that various consortia are interested in taking over the club, and unless that happens, it’s hard to see anything other than a relegation scrap livening up Rovers’ seasons over the next few years. Well, apart from the odd muck and bullets victory over the game’s cowering elite.

MANAGER: IAN HOLLOWAY LAST SEASON: PLAY OFF WINNERS GROUND: BLOOMFIELD ROAD CAPACITY: 9,650 WEBSITE: BLACKPOOLFC.CO.UK If you thought the cheer that greeted the final whistle of Blackpool’s playoff triumph was exponentially loud, that’s because the Wembley crowd’s effort was supplemented by shouts and hollers from fans up and down the country celebrating the addition of the ultimate away day to their fixture list. But, under the idiosyncratic but inspirational leadership of Ian Holloway, Blackpool will want to prove they’re not just here for/as a holiday. Obviously they’re huge favourites to be relegated and it would be as stupid to doubt the those odds as it would be tiresome to patronise Blackpool. But, what the world learned from their againstall-odds promotion is that they will go for it. They’ll play football, not percentages. And for once all that guff about enjoying every game and relishing the experience will be true, from the boardroom to the cheap seats.

MANAGER: OWEN COYLE LAST SEASON: 14TH GROUND: REEBOK STADIUM CAPACITY: 28,723 WEBSITE: BWFC.CO.UK With Owen Coyle at the helm, Bolton are entering a whole new era: The Football Years, perhaps. Certainly his two summer signings so far, Robbie Blake and Martin Petrov (both frees), suggest that he’s going to continue to insist on the Trotters playing ‘the right way’. Kevin Davies’ first ever back heel is currently scheduled for mid-September. A slight dent in the fantasy football philosophy will be made by Arsenal’s reluctance to let Jack Wilshire have a second season on loan, but the sea change at the Reebok will not be reversed and the fans will/should be happier than they have been for a while. At the back, they’ll have done well to hang on to Gary Cahill, while in midfield Chung-Yong Lee showed what a good player he is at the World Cup and looks set for a good season. Up front, Johan Elmander will, er… did we mention Kevin Davies already?

MANAGER: CARLO ANCELOTTI LAST SEASON: 1ST GROUND: STAMFORD BRIDGE CAPACITY: 42,055 WEBSITE: CHELSEAFC.COM The champions will, of course, be in with a shout at defending their title. But, despite regaining their crown last year, Chelsea look oddly vulnerable. Okay, maybe vulnerable’s not the word. As long as Ambramovich is at the helm, we shouldn’t be conjuring up images of Victorian match girls being bullied by moustachetwirling villains. But, Michael Ballack has gone, Joe Cole has gone and the club that once redefined spending levels in English football haven’t been really big spenders for the last five years. (Obviously by the time you read this they’re bound to have signed Torres for £50m). And there is some substance to the endless talk about this being an ‘ageing squad’. So, what can these plucky underdogs expect? A top four finish for certain. At least one domestic cup, probably. And a decent tilt at the Champions League. Dad’s Army won’t be waving the white flag anytime soon.

EVERTON BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES 2010-2011

MANAGER: DAVID MOYES LAST SEASON: 8TH GROUND: GOODISON PARK CAPACITY: 40,157 WEBSITE: EVERTONFC.COM Everton’s late surge for a European spot might have fallen just short, but last season was another impressive one for David Moyles’ men. The Scot is a widely and rightly admired manager, most people’s plaudits being based on his ability to get tremendous results out of a not entirely tremendous squad. But, the way things are going at Goodison, the parameters of praise might have to be shifted slightly. Because, without spending big money, Everton now have a group of players who could become as coveted as their manager. Which ‘big’ club wouldn’t want Phil Jagielka, Tim Cahill, Steven Pienaar, Jack Rodwell, Marouane Fellaini and Leon Osman? Stick a fully-fit Louis Saha at the top of that lot and it’s an impressive line-up. Time for Everton to stop doing well ‘when you bear in mind…’ and start doing well by anyone’s standards. Well, okay, almost anyone’s.

MANAGER: MARK HUGHES LAST SEASON: 12TH GROUND: CRAVEN COTTAGE CAPACITY: 25,350 WEBSITE: FULHAMFC.COM As this fixtures guide went to press, Fulham had just announced Mark Hughes as their new manager. They were disappointed not to prize Martin Jol away from Ajax, but, as plan Bs go, this looks like a corker. Hughes did well with Wales, even better with Blackburn and, let’s face it, did sod all wrong at Man City. He’s that rare animal: a manager onto his fourth job without a real blemish on his CV. Fulham will be hoping that he still has enough time – and funds – to make an impact in the transfer window. One of the reasons he has been tempted by the Fulham job, apparently, is that owner Mohamed Al Fayed, having sold Harrods for about £1.5bn just a few months ago, is willing to spend at least some of his money on re-inforcements. Thanks to a fantastic Europa cup run, Fulham were one of the stories of last season. They might just be starting a pretty damn gripping chapter two.

MANAGER: ROY HODGSON LAST SEASON: 7TH GROUND: ANFIELD CAPACITY: 45,362 WEBSITE: LIVERPOOLFC.TV Liverpool are in danger of becoming a Greek tragedy. There’s certainly something epic and resonant about their decline – and the cast of characters. New to the stage is Roy Hodgson, an appointment that everyone says is wise and right, but that very few are actually excited about. It’s also an appointment that’s overshadowed by the ongoing ownership issue. The general consensus is that Liverpool can’t move forward until that’s resolved. It’s also probably why their main summer signings to date have been freebies: Milan Jovanovich from Standard Liege and Joe Cole from Chelsea – a coup, yes, but not a sea-change signing, surely? By any sensible measure, Liverpool remain the most successful club in the history of English football. But in the modern era they are fading fast and need something dramatic and drastic to halt the slide and reverse the trend.

MANAGER: ROBERTO MANCINI LAST SEASON: 5TH GROUND: CITY OF MANCHESTER STADIUM CAPACITY: 47,726 WEBSITE: MCFC.CO.UK Man City can’t be stopped. They’re football’s Terminator. The only questions that remain are: How? When? And will there be any merit in it? Teams have always spent money to buy the title, they’ll argue. Sure, but in relation to the prevailing fiscal climate (in the game and in the real world), only Chelsea have ever separated themselves so spectacularly from, well, from normality. At the time of going to press they’d spent about £80m – and were moving through the gears. Hell, in Jerome Boateng and Yaya Toure, they’ve even bought a couple of players who can defend. In total they’ve spent over £350m in three years. And yet… they still haven’t snagged one that really hit you between the eyes, have they? There was a bit of a ‘wow’ factor around Robhino, but there were also question marks – quite rightly, as it turned out. So, yeah, Man City will get there. They will win the Premiership. But this year?

What if Ferdinand has another season of injury and inconsistency? What if Berbatov continues to look as interested and involved as a eunuch at an orgy and Rooney doesn’t hit the heights of last season? What if Chris Smalling’s just a shit Fulham reserve? And what if boardroom tumult means there’s no money for reinforcements? You’re right, they’ll still finish third at worst. And win a cup. And what if, as seems more likely, only, say, two of those ‘What ifs’ come true, and you throw the lively looking Javier Hernandez into the mix? Are Man U then favourites for the title? Actually, at the bookies, they’re second, behind Chelsea (just), but Fergie wants that 19th title so badly. So, last question: what if you had to stick your mortgage on anyone?…

MANAGER: CHRIS HUGHTON LAST SEASON: PROMTED AS CHAMPIONS GROUND: ST JAMES’ PARK CAPACITY: 52,387 WEBSITE: NUFC.CO.UK So, if we’re going to be forced to take Man City seriously (boo), who’s going to be the Premier League’s new comedy club? Okay, we shouldn’t laugh, but it is easy to see the Magpies getting stuck on a tittersome conveyer belt of expectation, disappointment, sacked managers, sideways glances at Shearer, a vilified owner and regular relegation battles. Or, maybe a spell in the Championship will have put some fire back in their belly. Andy Carroll will turn out to be a worthy number nine and the board’s loyalty to Chris Hughton will pay off. It needs to, because owner Mike Ashley isn’t going to pay out. Hughton has admitted he’s looking for ‘bargains’ and will (have to) stick mainly with the personnel that won promotion. The really good news, however, is that Joey Barton has declared himself “as good as any midfielder in the country”. Problems solved.

STOKE CITY BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES 2010-2011

MANAGER: TONY PULIS LAST SEASON: 11TH GROUND: BRITANNIA STADIUM CAPACITY: 28,383 WEBSITE: STOKECITYFC.COM Here’s a stat and a half: Last year, Stoke became only the second club in Premier League history (sounds like an oxymoron, admittedly) to improve their position and points tally in their second season. They follow in the footsteps of Blackburn in 1994 and managed it by finishing 11th last year compared to 12th in 08/09. Defender Ryan Shawcross is already targeting a top ten finish. The crazy fool. Tony Pulis’ men may not be everyone’s mug of super strong builders’ tea, but it is funny/bemusing to watch opposing defenders scramble to prevent a throw in at the expense of a corner. Something’s gotta be wrong there, right? And, by efficiently beating some pretty average sides – and tweaking the nose of Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane, they accrued enough points to be pretty comfortable for almost the entire campaign. Same again, please. Just one louder.

MANAGER: STEVE BRUCE LAST SEASON: 13TH GROUND: STADIUM OF LIGHT CAPACITY: 49,000 WEBSITE: SAFC.COM Last season was, to use the modern parlance, a bit meh for the Black Cats. When you look at the talent in their squad, they should surely be looking for something a bit better than 13th. Okay, they never flirted with relegation, but they didn’t sext text with a European finish, either. The good news is, in the close season, Steve Bruce has made a signing that guarantees goals: Titus Bramble. Harsh. Bramble takes a lot of stick, but he certainly has all the attributes of a top class defender. And when he last worked with Bruce he was Wigan’s player of the year. Darren Bent, meanwhile, will be hoping for something like a repeat of last year’s 25 goals. He must have been pissed off with not being selected for the World Cup, and Sunderland fans will hope he vents his frustration on the pitch rather than on Twitter.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES 2010-2011

MANAGER: HARRY REDKNAPP LAST SEASON: 4TH GROUND: WHITE HART LANE CAPACITY: 36,310 WEBSITE: TOTTENHAMHOTSPUR.COM Last season was Spurs’ most successful since the Premier League began. That says as much about their perennial underachieving as it does about the improvements made by Harry Redknapp. Their reward was a place in the Champions League, and whilst they can have no hope of winning the thing, fans will be looking forward to seeing Europe’s elite at White Hart Lane. The downside is that these highly prized European fixtures will make it harder for them to maintain last year’s league form. And if Man City’s spending makes them as certain to finish in the top four as Cheslea and Man U, then that leaves them battling with Liverpool, Arsenal, Villa and maybe Everton for one ‘available’ Champions League berth. Which might make last year a Premier League high watermark. In the cups, meanwhile, well, someone has to point out that the year ends in 1.

MANAGER: ROBERTO DI MATTEO LAST SEASON: PROMOTED AS RUNNERS UP WEBSITE: WBA.CO.UK GROUND: THE HAWTHORNS CAPACITY: 28,003 That ‘Boing Boing’ thing: is it the sound of West Brom bouncing between the Premier League and the Championship? Because that would seem to be their fate, and quite a fun one. They will be forever quite stoically, resignedly and now and again successfully fighting relegation, or stylishly and quite often successfully pushing for promotion. It beats Sisyphus. As ever, the summer has been more about holding on to their better players than attracting star signings. In that respect, keeping Graham Dorrans out of the clutches of West Ham should be considered the Baggies’ close season coup. Roberto Di Matteo manages a bit like he played, with a bit of style and giving the impression that he’s impossible to ruffle. The ‘good’ news is that his current charges start the campaign with a visit to his old team, Chelsea. So at least things can only get easier.

MANAGER: AVRAM GRANT LAST SEASON: 17TH GROUND: BOLEYN GROUND CAPACITY: 35,647 WEBSITE: WHUFC.COM After something of a nightmare last term, and with new owners and a new manager in place, it’s tougher than ever to call this season for the often erratic and frustrating Hammers. What’s easy to predict is that Robert Green will get no end of stick from fans up and down the country. The first time he flops safely down onto a tame shot from distance, the ironic cheers will be deafening. It’ll be interesting to see how a fragile-seeming keeper copes. Another strong season from Matthew Upson will help settle everyone’s nerves and another absolute barnstormer from Scott Parker could push West Ham into the right half of the table after flitting in and out of the relegation zone last year. Most importantly, if Avram Grant can bring the zeal, guile and passion of Portsmouth’s cup run to the East End then the fans will take to him instantly and momentum could start to build.

MANAGER: ROBERTO MARTÍNEZ LAST SEASON: 16TH GROUND: DW STADIUM CAPACITY: 25,138 WEBSITE: WIGANLATICS.CO.UK Here’s a thing: Roberto Martinez was apparently the star of US TV’s World Cup coverage. Smart, articulate and, let’s face it, not an ugly sod, the Stateside TV networks might well be hoping that the Latics have a stinker so he can become a permanent part of their media coverage. It seems unlikely. Although, there’s no denying, when Wigan have an off day, boy they stink. It’s a matter of Premier League record that they lost 9-1 away at Spurs and 8-0 away at Chelsea. But these embarrassments were offset by home wins against Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal – the comeback against the Gunners being many people’s highlight of the season. In Argentinian striker Mauro Boselli, they’ve also made a significant (£6.5m) addition to their squad. So, back off Fox, let’s just wait and see how this one pans out…

WOLVES BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE FIXTURES 2010-2011

MANAGER: MICK MCCARTHY LAST SEASON: 15TH GROUND: MOLINEUX CAPACITY: 28,525 WEBSITE: WOLVES.CO.UK Wolves’ survival last season was splendidly unfussy. Considering they were many people’s top tips to go down this time last year, they kind of strolled it. They were also the only team apart from Man U to do the double over the otherwise impressive Spurs. Kevin Doyle did enough for those stories linking him with a move to Arsenal not to prompt actual guffaws and, staying amongst the forward line, surely Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has too much natural ability not to have a better season second time around. Mick McCarthy, meanwhile, has quite quietly spent around £15 million, including £6.5m on Steven Fletcher from Burnley and £3m on the universally loved Stephen Hunt from Hull (just two letters away from being so apposite). So, let’s sagely tip them to consolidate; to cement a place in the top flight rather than go all yo-yo – then stand back and wait for the implosion.
