Get Connected Product Managers Roger Langford and Polly Sherrard guide us through the online world of Wii and Nintendo DSi… What are the current online connection rates for Wii and Nintendo DSi? Polly: From launch we’ve seen a very strong uptake from both services from both gamers and non-gamers alike. Our ongoing challenge is always to increase the number of people who connect their Wii and DSi to the internet so that they can take full advantage of all they have to offer. Roger: As such, we have launched the Connection Ambassador Promotion for Wii. To encourage people to connect their Nintendo DSi it launched with Nintendo DSi Browser as a free download. We have lots of new software and applications in the pipeline which we hope will encourage more people to get connected.

online, download new tracks for Guitar Hero and Band Hero, watch and listen to your favourite BBC programmes with the BBC iPlayer Wii Channel and download new and exclusive games from our WiiWare and DSiWare services.

‘‘

What have been the most popular WiiWare titles so far? Polly: My Aquarium, TV Show

We believe that today’s packaged goods business won’t simply be replaced by electronic distribution. WiiWare and DSiWare will work alongside retail. It is not a replacement.

Is WiiWare an outlet for a particular type of game? Polly: It is through our WiiWare service that developers have a platform from which they can jump in to the driving seat and develop software for the console. WiiWare frees developers from traditional game development constraints, letting them experiment with big ideas and, if necessary, with small budgets. What’s more, it gives Wii owners the chance to download exclusive games for their Wii that aren’t available anywhere else How do you access WiiWare games? Roger: You can download WiiWare games

What sort of prices are we talking about? Roger: WiiWare games range from 500 to 1,500 Nintendo points; however, free game demos are available, enabling consumers to try before they buy.

Roger: WiiWare games usually start out life exclusively on Wii – however, there are instances whereby games have branched out on to other platforms too: World of Goo by 2D Boy and the Tales of Monkey Island are also available on PC. The Wii Shop Channel’s Virtual Console service offers Wii Owners the chance to buy and download selected recreations of classic video games including favourites from the NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Turbografix, Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Commodore 64, NeoGeo and arcade games.

How many WiiWare games are available and how many do you think will be added to the portfolio next year? Polly: There are over 100 games available on WiiWare. From classic family games such as UNO (500pts) and Bonsai Barber (500pts) to single player action adventure in the form of the five part Tales of Monkey Island saga (1000pts), World of Goo (1500pts) and My Aquarium (500 pts), which appeals to those who like to take a relaxed approach to gaming. There is certainly something for everyone. There are a wide variety of projects in the pipeline both from large and small developers and you can expect a strong lineup of quality, unique games on WiiWare. Are all the games exclusively WiiWare?

‘‘

What benefits do users get from going online with their Wii? Roger: Going online with your Wii offers a whole new experience. You can race against your family and friends by playing Mario Kart

easily via the Wii Shop Channel by simply connecting your Wii online and purchasing games with Nintendo points purchased either directly on your Wii via credit card or in store. The Nintendo point cards have a unique code that is entered into the Wii or DSi Owners account within the Wii Shop Channel or DSi Shop. Once downloaded, the games can then be saved either onto the Wii internal memory or on to an SD card.

King, LostWinds™, World of Goo™, FINAL FANTASY® CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: My Life as a King™, My Pokémon Ranch™, Bomberman Blast, Tetris Party, Wild West Guns and Defend your Castle™.

How can retail get involved in WiiWare/DSiWare? Many retailers will see it as a threat to them rather than an opportunity... Polly: The purchase of WiiWare games requires Nintendo Points for the transaction. From a retail perspective, the Nintendo Points are all available as on-shelf cards that can be bought for oneself, or gifted. WiiWare and DSiWare are not threats to retail. We don’t believe today’s packaged business will simply be replaced by electronic distribution business. Titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit will always work best with the big launch presence that only a retail environment can provide. WiiWare will work alongside retail distribution. It is not a replacement. How important are the online features of the Wii and Nintendo DSi to the evolution of the consoles?

Langford (left) and Sherrard are stressing the opportunities – to retailers as well as consumers – created by going online via the Wii and DSi

Roger: Nintendo’s vision for the future of online gaming is not just about seeing how many numbers of people we can get connected. That’s a major part of the mission, naturally, but the big picture is about what people then do once they are online. With the Nintendo DSi we are encouraging people to take control of content, to become creators themselves, to share their gaming and creativity with friends and family. It’s about creating a positive experience for everyone. What benefits do users get from going online with their Nintendo DSi? Polly: Going online with your Nintendo DSi adds a new dimension to the Nintendo DS experience. Owners can download unique games and applications from our DSiWare service and play online with friends and family with games such as Mario Kart DS. Sharing experiences is one of the key benefits of DSi and our Facebook application is designed with this in mind. It allows users to get the most out of the fun image manipulation tools on the DSi camera, and post their photographic creations straight to their Facebook profile.

When was the DSiWare range introduced? Polly: With the launch of Nintendo DSi back in 2009. There are currently over 70 DSiWare titles available… and counting. How do consumers access DSiWare games? Roger: Nintendo DSi owners simply need a wireless connection to put their DSi Online. Once connected, consumers can access the Nintendo DSi Shop and from there download DSiWare games and applications from a wide range of options. How do they purchase them? Polly: DSiWare titles are purchased using Nintendo points. These can be bought at most official Nintendo stockists, in store or online. Nintendo points can also be purchased directly from the Nintendo DSi Shop via credit card. Points cards are available in 1000, 2000 and 3000 denominations. The Nintendo point cards have a unique code that is entered into the Dsi Owners account within the DSi Shop Channel. How much do they cost?

Roger: DSiWare games are priced at 200 pts, 500 pts and 800 pts; however, some games are even available for free. How many DSiWare games are available and how many do you think will be added to the portfolio next year? Roger: There are over 70 games available on DSiWare. From classic family games such as UNO (500 pts) and WarioWare Snapped (500 pts), to action adventure in the form of Dragon Quest (500 pts). Or for those that like to keep their mind sharp, Dr Kawashima is back with A Little Bit More Brain Training Arts, Science and Sudoku (approx 800 pts). We have lots of new software and applications in the pipeline which we hope will appeal to everyone. What have been the most popular DSiWare titles so far? Roger: WarioWare™: Snapped!, Paper Plane™, Pyoro™, A Little Bit of... Dr. Mario™, A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun™: Funny Face, Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, Real Football 2009, A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun™: Shuffle Games, A Little Bit of... Magic Made Fun™: Deep Psyche and Mixed Messages™.

Wii – Online Products, Once consumers get online via their Wii, a whole new world of

T

he Wii Online features add a whole new dimension to the Wii experience. The recent launch of BBC iPlayer as a Wii Channel offers Wii owners another reason to turn their console on every day and adds to the already established nongaming content on Wii that includes news and weather channels and an internet BBC iPlayer Late last year, the BBC and Nintendo unveiled a new and enhanced version of the acclaimed iPlayer as a standalone ‘Wii Channel’. For Wii users it provides instant access to a faster and richer experience of the BBC’s TV and radio on-demand catch-up service, employing a new full screen user interface and delivering a higher quality image. To use the BBC iPlayer on the Wii, users should download the BBC iPlayer Wii Channel from the menu screen of Wii Shop Channel. Then they simply click on the BBC iPlayer icon to launch the full screen service. WiiWare/Virtual Console WiiWare is a digital download service available in the Wii Shop Channel. It opens the door to a host of brand new titles created exclusively for download on Wii, like Bonsai Barber, a crazy mixture of hair styling and topiary. Through WiiWare players have access to unique software from both major game publishers and creative, independent game companies. The Virtual Console, meanwhile, enables you to play perfect recreations of classic video games on Wii including favourites from the NES, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Turbografx (PC Engine), Sega Mega Drive, Sega Master System, Commodore 64, NeoGeo and arcades. Internet Channel One of the first things Wii users will want to do once they’re online is download the Internet Channel and start browsing the web in front of the TV. It’s easy to get started, just go to the Wii Shop Channel and highlight the Internet Channel. By using the simple Parental Controls option, it’s easy to govern what is and isn’t accessible for children. It’s also incredibly simple (and fun) to surf using the Wii Remote. It lets you zoom in on areas of interest. The Wii will also support a USB keyboard. Nintendo especially recommends the Classic Keyboard 200 from Logitech.

Wii Owners can also download additional content for their games, such as more tracks for Guitar and Band Hero; play against friends and family worldwide with online titles such as Mario Kart; and with Nintendo points purchase exclusive games and free demos from the WiiWare service, accessed via the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo Channel Doing pretty much what it says on the tin, the Nintendo channel is the gateway to all the info you’ll ever need on all things Nintendo. It’s available for free in the Wii Shop Channel and is a source for details on Wii and DS games past, present and future. It carries videos of them as well as plenty of useful customer feedback. Plus there are TV ads, developer interviews and more. Download extra content for your games One of the huge benefits of going online is the ability to download extra content for your favourite Wii games, meaning they can stay fresh and playable. The nature and price of the content varies and can include things like new characters, new puzzles, new environments and extra powers. In Guitar Hero and

Band Hero, you can download extra songs, including the Lenny Kravitz anthem Fly Away, as seen in Nintendo's TV ad. All games for which players can download extra content carry the Wi-Fi Pay & Play logo. Playing with your friends online Mario Kart is not only one of the greatest Wii games of all time,, it’s also one of the very best to play online against friends. Once they’re online, players just go to Nintendo WFC from the Main Menu then select 1 Player if they’re on their own or 2 Players of a friend is going to play with them on the same console. From there, the connection is made to Nintendo WFC, taking them to the Nintendo WFC Mode Selection Screen. They can play with randomly chosen people or with selected Friends. Up to 12 people can play online at one time.

Marketing The online capabilities of both Wii and Nintendo DSi are being pushed very much to the fore in 2010, so it’s apt that the year starts with a high profile TV ad campaign and a significant in-store push… • TV From January 18th 2010, both Nintendo DSi and Wii will be supported with three-week, strong above-the-line campaign, using TV to show off just some of the great online features. Wii – The Wii advert will feature the new Wii Channel – BBC iPlayer; Activision's Band Hero focussing on downloadable content; and the game Bonsai Barber from the WiiWare service accessed via the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo DSi – For the DSi campaign, three adverts will air, each focussing on different online features: the new Facebook application; Little Bit of Brain Training (DSiWare) and Dictionary 6-in-1 (DSiWare). A unique end frame will then tie all three adverts together to reinforce the ‘online’ message. Both adverts will direct consumers to Nintendo.co.uk where people can find out ‘how to get their consoles online’ with bitesize tutorials. • IN-STORE To complement the TV campaign, there will also be an in-store leaflet. This will play a key part in ensuring that at the point of purchase consumers are aware of what additional benefits there are with both consoles and how they can enhance their experience. The booklet also features a step-by-step guide on how to put the two consoles online. There will also be lanyards available for staff to wear, to ensure that they have all of the key information to hand. Nintendo will be advertising the online capabilities of the Wii and DSi for the first time since 2006

Nintendo’s support for online extends to in-store POS as well as a major TV campaign
