• On March 20, 1823, Ned Buntline, the "dime millionaire" and discoverer of Buffalo Bill, is born in New York. More than any single writer, Buntline was responsible for creating a romanticized and misleading image of the American West. He once said, "I found that to make a living I must write 'trash' for the masses."

boxing has lost any semblance of the classic drama created by old-time announcers. But baseball works. In fact, I would argue that baseball is better on radio than it is on TV.
Legendary New York radio sports talk announcer Art Rust Jr. used to have a favorite saying: "I saw it on the radio."
Let's face it, the action in baseball comes in 60-, 90-, and 400-foot bursts. During the course of a three-hour game there may be, on average, less than an hour's worth of action. And even if there's a guy with a dramatic curveball on the mound like Zack Greinke, in most parts of the stadium you can't really tell what he's throwing. In the park, the focus is on the outcome of a pitch, rarely is it about the mechanics.
Baseball translates better on radio than any other sport. In football, you really need to be watching the sudden movements like, say, when a tackle is broken. In a basketball broadcast, the grace and beauty of a perfectly executed jump shot or high-flying dunk is lost. Hockey broadcasts consist primarily of commentary on line colors ("skates past the red line, passes to the blue line, back to the blue line, pass stolen at the red line, to the blue line, he shoots, stick save and the puck is kicked back at the blue line ..."), and
On TV, fans get the familiar centerfield camera view. While this allows you to see the pitch and its velocity and arc, it's really an unnatural view, as most people have never watched a game from that angle, that far away. And while it lets you see the batter swing, the best way to take in a batter's swing is from the side. Lastly, that view does not allow you to see the position of the fielders or the lead of the runners. Granted, great production crews will have extra cameras and offer you brief glimpses, but the experience just never really

clicked with viewers and that, probably more than anything led to football's dominance on TV. Not so on the radio, where the attention is on the details. A good announcer -- of which there are many -- adheres to the storytelling tradition during a classic baseball broadcast. They will announce the starting lineups rather than just posting it on your screen, they will describe the details of the uniforms and the atmosphere in the park, and you will better hear the pop of the ball in the catcher's mitt, hum of the crowd and crack of the bat. Descriptions of the play are far more intense, and your imagination can add flourishes to mundane plays you've seen a thousand times. Best of all, you can multi-task (my preference being a beer and a porch). I'm no shill, but I have to recommend the MLB At Bat application for both Apple and Android phones to all baseball fans -- particularly those on the go. The app costs $19.99 for the season, $4.99 monthly, and gives you access to every radio broadcast in the country plus being able to see video highlights of key plays if you wish. Other Internet radio sites offer some broadcasts, but MLB At Bat is well worth the money. Check it for yourself and remember ... yesterday is a canceled check, tomorrow is a promissory note, but today is all the time you have, so spend it wisely.

To Do List • It's better to be a butterfly. The more social you are, the better your health, researchers say. • Plastic grocery bags always come in handy. Try storing them in empty tissue boxes for the car or bathroom, or use an empty 12-pack soda box for more storage under your kitchen sink or in the garage. • "For foot cramps at bedtime, eat a banana in the evening. I think it is the potassium in the bananas, but it has had a good effect for me. And it can't hurt to get another serving of fruit, right?" — L.I. in Missouri • "Another great use for baby powder (or corn starch): If you have a deck of cards that are sticking together, simply place them in a baggie and add a tablespoon of powder. Seal and shake, getting the dust in between the cards. When you remove the cards, shuffle them over a kitchen towel, and they will be like brand new." — R.D. in Texas • Fill a mop bucket with a dustpan? Yes! Use the large end of the dustpan as a funnel from the faucet over the side of the sink, where your mop bucket is waiting to catch the waterfall. The handle acts as a spout. A Financial Reality Study: Many Parents Don’t Have a Will Almost half of all parents don’t have a will. That’s a stunning number of people who haven’t put their final wishes in writing. A Princeton Survey Research Associates International’s poll for Caring.com asked adult children across the country for their knowledge about their parents having a will. Here are some of the statistics: • Forty-four percent of parents don’t have a will or living trust, period. • Sixteen percent of adult children don’t know whether their parents have a will. • Of those who know there is a will, half of adult children don’t know where to find those documents, and most don’t know what’s in them. • Only 40 percent of parents have updated their wills within the past five years. • One-quarter of adult children don’t know if the wills have ever been updated. • Older adults, who have older parents and therefore should be much more informed about the location and contents of wills, aren’t much better off than young adults. In the 50-64 age category, 38 percent don’t know what’s in the will and 29 percent don’t know where it is.
7
• More females than males know what’s in the wills, but men are more likely than women to know where the wills are. No matter your age, if you’re a parent, you need a will. Consider what happens if you suddenly pass away without having made written instructions about what’s to happen to your house, your financial accounts and all your other assets. Not only are you leaving your loved ones in a bad position at an emotional time, it’s also going to be expensive for them to sort out. Dying without a will is called intestate, and each state has different rules about how your property will be divided. Those rules won’t necessarily coincide with your wishes. If you consult an attorney about having a will written, ask about revocable living trusts laws in your state. It’s possible (not guaranteed) that your inheritors can avoid the delays of probate. If you have a will, update it periodically to add or revoke provisions by having a codicil (an amendment) added to it. Have all your important documents in one place: insurance policies; information about how to contact your attorney, CPA and financial adviser; and your will. And be sure your family knows where this information is stored. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Dog Flu Symptoms DEAR PAW’S CORNER: At my dog’s recent checkup, the veterinarian told me to keep an eye on him as a new strain of flu is going around in my area. I didn’t even know dogs could get the flu. Can you tell other pet owners what symptoms to look for? - Carol in Chicago DEAR CAROL: Dogs (and cats) can contract certain strains of the flu virus, and veterinarians even offer flu shots for pets to protect against the most common strains. In the Chicago area, a new strain of flu virus that affects dogs and cats was recently identified by scientists at Cornell University and the University of Wisconsin. The Chicago Sun Times reported that more than 1,000 dogs have become ill with the flu this spring. Symptoms

include a cough, runny nose and fever. The severity of these symptoms can vary, so it’s best to contact the vet even if your dog’s symptoms seem mild. If your pet is diagnosed with the flu, your vet may recommend that you keep your pet well hydrated, and may or may not prescribe medicine to ease some symptoms. Do not take your pet to a kennel, doggy daycare, dog park or any other place where it may be around other dogs. If its symptoms get worse or it stops eating or drinking, take your dog to the vet immediately. A vaccine is available for dogs and cats that protects against the most common strains of the flu, and can lessen the effects of other strains. Talk to your vet about getting this shot. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
SAMANTHA WEAVER
“The greatest analgesic, soporific, stimulant, tranquilizer, narcotic, and to some extent even antibiotic — in short, the closest thing to a genuine panacea — known to medical science is work.” —Thomas Szasz
You may be forgiven if you’ve never heard of Violet Jessup, who lived a remarkably fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on your point of view) life. At the age of 23, Jessup was serving as a steward on the RMS Olympic when the luxury liner collided with a British warship and sank. She survived to continue her profession, taking a position on the RMS Titanic less than two years later, in 1912. That didn’t end well, as we all know, but once again, Jessup survived. Amazingly, she continued her oceangoing career, and during World War I she served as a nurse aboard the Hospital Ship Britannic. When the Britannic struck a mine and sank, Jessup was pulled underwater and hit her head on the keel of the ship. Despite her injuries, she was rescued once again. Three maritime disasters didn’t seem to faze her, though; she remained a stewardess for the rest of her career.
• It was a man named Thomas Jones who made the following sage observation: "Friends may come and go, but enemies accumulate." • In 2007, researchers using Google Earth discovered the world's largest beaver dam. Located in the wilderness of northern Canada, the dam is more than a half- mile long at 2,790 feet; experts estimate the structure was started in the mid-1970s. • If you're a resident of Ohio, please keep in mind that in that state, it is illegal to get undressed in front of a man's portrait. • If you’re like the average American, you order meals to take away from restaurants more often than you actually eat inside a restaurant.
