HOTEL NEWS T’NALAK: The Art of Woven Dreams and Memories Last July, InterContinental Manila exhibits the unique weaving-tradition from an artful tribe in Mindanao, The T’boli, as presented by the renowned Floral Architect of the Philippines, Rachy Cuna. T’boli is indigenous group in South Cotabato that weave abaca fibers to a beautiful masterpiece called T’nalak which is one of the best known cultural products of the Philippines. T’nalak is believed to be products of T’boli weavers memories, crafted from designs handed down from generation to generation. They are artful patterns bestowed to then in a dream by Fu Dalu, the spirit of the abaca. T’nalak production is a labor intensive process requiring knowledge learned at a young age by the women of the T’boli tribe. It is made from the whitest abaca fibers stripped from the tree, dried, and separated into strands. Natural vegetable dye are used to stain the strands, usually in tones of red, brown, and black, and then hand woven to produce a single, unique pattern that takes months to finish. It is exchanged by couples during marriage and is used as covering during birth for safe delivery. If a weaving is sold, a brass ring is often attached to it to appease the spirits and while weaving a T’nalak, T’boli women practice abstinence in order to maintain the purity of their art. Mr. Cuna brings the woven art of the T’nalak into a realm of installation art highlighting the tribe’s high taste in design and narrating through patterns the story of their generations.
