leXsolar-PV Professional offers experiments for both electrical engineering and photovoltaics. But the main focus is on laboratory experiments on photovoltaic systems. Due to the modular setup, the very detailed specific characteristics of single components can be analyzed, such as the switching threshold of series or shunt regulators. Because of the integrated manual mode, the included MPP tracker enables a descriptive understanding of the really important principle of the MPP tracking. With the help of the PWM regulator the principle of pulse width modulated charging can be demonstrated. In addition, an inverter displays the generation of alternating current out of a solar panel current.

The product is completed through a variety of different electrical consumers such as a super bright LED or a light bulb, which can be used to compare their efficiency. A radio, which can be powered to the solar panel, helps to increase the attentiveness of students. The optional expansion Data Logging offers additional experiments as well as the possibility of record measurement values on a computer. Please find further information on page 62.

leXsolar-Wind Medium Item-No. 1403

leXsolar-Wind Medium is the optimal beginner package on the topic of wind energy. Even for a small price it allows the most important basic experiments regarding wind energy. Many tests are of a qualitative nature and are therefore designed for grades 6 to 8. Nevertheless, quantitative experiments are not neglected and there are a range of possible applications up to grade 10. leXsolar-Wind Medium also contains the new leXsolar-Rotor Wing (refer to page 33 for details) and has an experimental scope without equal in this price range.

EXPERIMENTS

This system provides you with all the answers you need concerning the basics of using wind energy. With the help of curriculumbased trials, it discusses different topics, which are necessary for understanding the functions of wind power plants. The study of how wind force, wind direction or rotor type influences the power output are only some examples of possible experiments. Both qualitative experiments – for students from age of 11 through 13 and complete quantitative trials for physics lessons until the age of 19 – are described in detail. For the qualitative trials, the expansion “Measurements without Measuring“ is required.

• • • • • • • • • • • •

Dependence of the wind power plant on wind speed Variation of the generated voltage produced by changing the load Analysis of wind speed in front of and behind the rotor Dependence of the power output of a wind turbine on number of blades (qualitative and quantitative) Influence of the rotor blade profile on the power output of a wind turbine (qualitative and quantitative) Dependency of the power output of a wind turbine on blade pitch (qualitative and quantitative) Effincency determination of a wind power plant Saving energy Energy conversion and use of wind energy Analysis of different rotor types (Savonius-rotor and impeller) Characteristics of the wind generator Dependence of the wind generator on wind direction

leXsolar-Wind rotor set Item-No. 1400-12 As of now all products of the leXsolar-Wind range will be delivered with a new set of rotor blades. With the aid of these blades the following parameters of the wind turbine within the experiment can be varied: • blade profile (optimized profile and “windmill vane”) • number of blades at the rotor (1,2, 3 or 4 blades) • blade pitch (20°, 25°, 30°, 50° and 90°)

For the most of the experiments manuals with different difficulty levels are available: qualitative experiments for the grades 5 to 8 and quantitative manuals for older students. The expansion “Measurements without Measuring” (Item-No. 1106) is necessary for the qualitative experiments.

The rotor blades are sympathized with reality regarding blade profile and blade twisting and therefore the only ones in the educational material market who make realistic experiments concerning wind power possible.

KEY DATA

leXsolar-H2 Ready-to-go offers the entire scope of the latest experiments in fuel cell technology for the classroom. With a solar panel, electrolyzer, and fuel cells, a solar-hydrogen-circuit can be set up and analyzed. On the other hand, the students also have the possibility of researching each single component. Working principles, efficiency, and the characteristic curves of electrolyzers and fuel cells are just some of the possible topics. With the included consumer modules younger students (from 12 years up) are also able to run simple basic experiments. Besides the PEM-fuel cell (PEM = polymer electrolyte membrane) a methanol-fuel cell is included, which can use methanol instead of hydrogen as fuel. That is why this fuel cell also has a high practical relevance. Furthermore, additional experiments such as working with different membranes or a comparison of the operating mode of fuel cells with air and hydrogen as well as hydrogen and oxygen, can be displayed. True to the tradition of the Ready-to-go line all ancillary equipment are already included in the robust aluminum suitcase.

BioFuel

lexsolardeals with the different technologies of producing and using biomass fuel. Biofuels have two important advantages: they store renewable energies and they can easily replace fossil fuel in transportation. The ecological balance sheet of organic fuels should be viewed critically to prevent an extreme scenario where the rain forest has to be rooted out for its production.

The entire process of the production of organic fuels can be displayed with leXsolar-BioFuel Large. It starts with the biological step of alcohol fermentation. Afterwards the produced mash will be distilled with the help of the leXsolar-condenser, which was developed just for this experiment. The last step demonstrates the conversion of the produced biofuel into usable energy, such as electrical energy, using the provided Ethanol-fuel cell. leXsolar-BioFuel Large not only covers the topic of the production of bioethanol, but also the production of biodiesel through transesterification of fats.

Part 1: Biodiesel production • Transesterification from fat to Biodiesel (FAME) • Determination of fat parameters • Extraction of fats from foods and oil plants Part 2: Alcohol fermentation • Production of a mash/ alcoholic fermentation • Fermentation of different sugar types (including catalytic splitting of starch) • Proof of fermentation gases • Nachweis von Gärgasen Part 3: Distillation and production of Bioethano • Distillation of mash • Characteristics of the produced Ethano Part 4: Ethanol fuels • Introduction Ethanol fuel cell • I-V curve of Ethanol fuel cells • Dependency of Ethanol fuel cells on concentration and temperature • Energy balance of the whole process

COMPONENTS

This kit is like the other products in the Ready-to-go line: usable without any additional accessories. It provides a basic understanding of solar thermal energy conversion. The most important component is the solar collector, which can be powered both by sunlight as well as by the enclosed infrared light source. Due to the comprehensive amount of accessories, a large number of experiments are possible. Sample experiments are the study of the absorption behavior of different surfaces or the effect of convection.

For storing electrical energy many different battery technologies are already on the market. But what application needs which battery type, what capacity does the battery need to have and what loading performance is the best to guarantee a long durability? Due to the problem of storing renewable energy, these are questions which need to be worked on in technical training. With leXsolar-EStore Professional, the characteristics of different battery types can be analyzed. In addition, the kit helps students to find out more about the different fields of application. The kit comes with different battery technologies such as lead, NiMH or Lithium-Polymer(LiPo) as well as a PEM-fuel cell. For the correct determination of the internal resistance four-terminal sensing is possible.
