MASTERCLASSES
MC 01
HOPE HALL – UP CLOSE WITH BARACK OBAMA’S VIDEOGRAPHER
› VOLKSBÜHNE 3. STOCK › TUE 21.11. › 19:00 H
In the digital age of democracy, the potential for bending the arc of the moral universe towards justice (Martin Luther King) is often a great, elusive, artistic conundrum for communicators, artists and filmmakers. How do we hone our work through an authentic tone in a landscape embedded with fake news? Hope Hall will share lessons learned on the job as Obama’s videographer and screen relevant clips. Speaker
Hope Hall – The documentary filmmaker’s work was screened at international film festivals before she was hired as the Principal Presidential Videographer in the White House Office of Digital Strategy. As part of his campaign for more transparency and inclusion, Hall accompanied Barack Obama all over the world for six years, shooting, editing and releasing weekly video dispatches that featured both his working and private life.
Free entry! Due to limited capacity, please register via interforum@interfilm.de. All events will be held in English. A Bewegliche Ziele e.V. event supported by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation.
MASTERCLASSES
MC 02
PLYMPTOONS!
BILL PLYMPTON ON INDEPENDENT ANIMATION FILMMAKING
› VOLKSBÜHNE 3. STOCK › WED 22.11. › 18:30 H
The so-called “King of Indie Animation” speaks of his experience in everyday life and survival as an independent animator. His distinctive style and perseverance are instrumental to the way in which he implements new ideas. Bill Plympton will also provide an insight into his current work with an exquisite film selection and live sketching session on stage. Speaker
Bill Plympton – After his application to Disney was rejected, 16-year-old Plympton decided to take his career in his own hands. The caricaturist, illustrator, animator and filmmaker worked for American newspapers and commercials, but most notably produced and drew dozens of animated films that all bear his unmistakeable drawing style and dark sense of humour.
Admission 5,00 € Festival accreditation, Festival Passes and Five-Ticket Passes are valid. All events will be held in English.

› VOLKSBÜHNE 3. STOCK › FRI 24.11. › 19:00 H
Short films provide young filmmakers in particular with the opportunity to experiment and demonstrate their ability. As usual, it always comes down to money—but does it have to? Using encouraging examples, producer Jan Harlan explains all manner of possibilities that are achievable without a big fat budget. Speaker
Jan Harlan – The legendary German-Englishman’s work as producer includes the Stanley Kubrick film Barry Lyndon (1975). Harlan is a guest lecturer at numerous European film schools and is often invited to participate in film festival juries. He is currently touring the world with the STANLEY KUBRICK EXHIBITION to great success.
Admission 5,00 € Festival accreditation, Festival Passes and Five-Ticket Passes are valid. All events will be held in English.

The focus of this film talk lies on “In Absentia”, their collaboration with Karl-Heinz Stockhausen. Speaker
T he Quay Brothers – Born and raised in the USA, the identical twins moved to England in the 1960s to study at the Royal College of Art in London. INTERNATIONAL SCRIPT PITCH
SCRIPT PITCH – THE SELECTED PROJECTS Storytelling through film thrives on images strong enough to stand on their own and create new worlds purely in the way they are staged and shot. The authors in this year’s Script Pitch have come up with the most diverse possible range of stories, replete with metaphors, allegories and symbols. But it’s the striking film images that form the core, the origin of these stories, and they are what ultimately stay with us. Young Maïssa senses a new world helping her to overcome old, deep-seated anxieties and opening inspiring new possibilities as she explores the ocean bays of Catalonia. Kjartan liberates himself from the blazing fire and thereby from an aging artist’s eternal quest for meaning. Ioana goes all in when she intentionally sets off chaos in the big city’s daily traffic routine to make an unmistakable stand against ignorance, condescension and plain old stubbornness. Josip’s last chance to find independence and break out of his restrictive everyday life is a car. Even in the scripts, detailed pictorial compositions speak with their own, as yet unseen power. There’s the comprehensive description, microscopically precise, of the look in the enemy’s eyes as he systematically hems in and cuts off his victim, told in a way that makes the air almost too thin to breathe. Take the defined muscle outlines of an expertly trained dog, a veteran fighter, suddenly transformed from pet to master of the situation whose actions control the sequence and pace of the narrative. Whether images speak in broad symbols or fine detail, they are brimming with suspense, they take stands, feed us premonitions and question assumptions with a dramaturgical strength that stokes intense curiosity about the proposed films.

MINDFULNESS AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS
› VOLKSBÜHNE 3. STOCK › WED 22.11. › 11:00 H
As a self-described hippy, yogi and meditator, Hope least expected to find herself in a key communications role at the White House. As videographer to the former US President Barack Obama, her daily rhythm was not only dictated by her boss but he even became her instructor on mindfulness. How can we switch from the precipice of burnout to a daily state of inner vitality and creative clarity? In this workshop, Hope Hall will analyze the participants’ questions and experiences to develop a guideline for a creative life. Speaker

Screenplays speak—between the poles of word and image—from the zeitgeist of the respective writer. Whether they address issues such as diversity in love, acceptance of alternative life styles or equality for women—the new generation of filmmakers brings the process of rapid social change in the region of former Yugoslavia into focus. Honest, blunt and yet still imbued with humour and great hope. The session will illuminate contemporary screenwriting and discuss the topic of change in literature and film. Free entry!
