Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec need no introduction, but what does is the French industrial designers’ new collection for Emeco, the U.S. manufacturer that got its start in World War II making seating out of scrap metal. Meet Truss, a family of go-anywhere tables and bench seating with an architectural bent. Emeco’s aluminum expertise is reflected in the recycled frame, made at the company’s factory in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Added to that are side panels in marine-grade Douglas Fir plywood, chosen for its strength completing the truss system. “Simplicity is a long process,” Erwan says. “Truss was to be naked, and it took a while to strip it down to the best minimum.” Safe to say the siblings nailed it. space 318

jgma Daley College Manufacturing Technology & Engineering Center, Chicago When JGMA was selected to revitalize the Daley College Manufacturing Technology & Engineering Center, one of Chicago’s seven city colleges, the firm knew it had an opportunity that went beyond architecture: to signal change for both the manufacturing industry and the surrounding community. “The seamless fluidity to the building’s form was inspired by the constant and linear flow of the production process,” JGMA founder Juan Gabriel Moreno says. The building, a collaboration with architect of record CannonDesign, boasts material nods to high-tech manufacturing as well, particularly on the facade, where industrial metal panels are faceted and three-dimensional. Through the glass curtain wall, the interior’s exposed steel and poured concrete is visible as are the expanded labs, where students learn CNC machining and welding. Elsewhere are swaths of scarlet, orange, and canary. The latter also coats the underside of the pedestrian bridge linking the college’s north and south campus. Although yellow, it symbolizes a green light: the bright future of the industry, which expects to bring an additional 20,000 jobs to the region within the next decade.

Washington’s Georgetown neighborhood, populated with wellpreserved Colonial and Federal buildings, was given National Historic Landmark District status in 1967. A few decades later, it became the capitol’s hip commercial district with some of the city’s best restaurants and boutiques. Both of these personalities are on display at a neighborhood bank branch by Leo A Daly and CallisonRTKL. In fact, it’s not just a bank; it’s a Capital One Café, the retail category winner. “It’s less a branch than a local social/coworking space,” Leo A Daly senior project manager Cindy Linkins says, though it does offer ATMs and in-person banking services, too. A Peet’s Coffee counter and generous seating options, plus free WiFi, encourage customers to pull up a laptop and stay awhile. Mindful of the historic status, the team collaborated with the D.C. Historic Preservation Office among others while developing the 8,900-square-foot space, which spans three row houses. “The interior is an extension of the neighborhood,” CallisonRTKL associate principal Jeany Kim adds. Restored brick walls, refurbished wood-beam ceilings, and historic tile installations are among the retained original details, while data security and ADA accessibility are 21st-century improvements. to you yet, it soon will be. This Netherlands-based Polish weaver is known for turning flat yarn into fabrics with wonderful dimensionality. For her namesake contract upholstery collection—her first—she transformed recycled cotton, post-consumer polyester, and nylon into high-performance, three-dimensional textiles. There are quilted, pillowy surfaces featuring rectangles, honeycombs, and diamonds. Colors are soft and sometimes gradient, further enhancing the visual texture. Gaca says she likes to push the boundaries of this ancient technique while honoring its emotional qualities. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

office manufacturer introduces Phlox by Rainlight: seating and tables to bring “serenity now!” to the workplace. Named after the night phlox flower and inspired by its gentle form, the seat comes in conference, lounge, and stool iterations, each with multiple forms and bases. The upholstery fabric was newly developed for Phlox and is made from fishing nets salvaged from Japan’s surrounding seas, knit together with recycled PET yarns. Contemporary Greek in stylish surrounds is the name of the game for this airy Logan Square taverna that offers indoor and outdoor dining plus takeout. Be transported to the Mediterranean—or more specifically, the southern Greek island of chef Doug Psaltis’s ancestors—via traditional fare lightened for a contemporary palette. Beatnik on the River [$] This waterfront bar a seven-minute walk from the Mart has laid-back appeal, with a name that calls to mind the carefree bohemian sixties. Its decor (with loads of outdoor space right on the river) and menu (the latter by Marcos Campos, also of Porto) are a blend of Mediterranean influences that stretch from North Africa to the Middle East, and the funky music program mashes up reggae, Afrobeat, and French pop. BLVD Steakhouse [$$$] Named after Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard, this steakhouse by executive chef Johnny Besch trades in classics such as lobster bisque, steak tartare, and seafood towers. Award-winning interiors by Studio K Creative blend Art Deco and Hollywood Regency styles, channeling the golden age of dining on the Strip, when you might have bumped into members of the Rat Pack. Diver at the Park [$] Near Wrigley Field is a new “Tulum-style” beer garden that hosts drag brunches and DJ sets. Tacos are the star of the menu, naturally, while the design centers on a breezy mélange of tropical plants, rattan, and macramé. Andros Taverna [$$]
fresh pick! Venteux [$$] Chicago’s newest brasserie (named after the French word for windy, as in the Windy City) is located in the iconic Carbide & Carbon building, designed in 1929 by the city’s Burnham Brothers in lavish Art Deco style. It’s now a luxury hotel, the Pendry Chicago, and Venteux is its tentpole dining option. In the sunny café designed by Studio Munge, guests can settle into plush velvet booths with an espresso and a pastry for a moment’s reprieve. Further within, behind a screen of textured glass and brass, two swanky dining rooms offer a raw bar and French fine-dining staples such as caviar and escargot. 224 N. Michigan Avenue; 312-777-9003.
Esmé [$$$] The husband-wife team of Jenner Tomaska and Katrina Bravo recently opened their fine-dining concept, its name French for “beloved.” The seasonally evolving tasting menu draws inspiration from Chicago’s own culture, with dishes like pierogi and salt-bake sturgeon. Beverages include twists on classic cocktails such as a poblano, artichoke, and raspberry Old Fashioned, and the wine list highlights producers of color and women winemakers. The restaurant’s mantra is an Alexander Calder quote—“above all, art should be fun”—and the couple plans to collaborate with local artists to support emerging talent. 2200 N. George’s Deep Dish [$] When in Chicago, it’s only right to eat the local delicacy. This artisanal deep-dish pizza joint may be situated far north, but it’s worth the trip for offerings like Weasley’s Spicy Red Top with Italian sausage, fire-roasted red peppers, pickled cherry peppers, and ricotta. The dough is fermented for several days and baked at a low temperature, resulting in rich flavor. Be warned, though; these small-batch pies often sell out. Reserve yours on Tock. 6221 N. Fancy Plants Kitchen [$]
joint, where at least seven types of pasta are made in-house daily. The refined decor is by New York’s D’Apostrophe Design, who chose natural materials like solid oak and marble to complement the authentic ingredients on the menu. 1133 W. Randolph Street; 773-672-8955.
Oooh Wee! It Is! [$] “Soul food with a twist” is the promise of this casual eatery from Mark and Shae Walker—the second outpost of their budding chainlet. Shrimp ‘n’grits, jerk chicken tips, and Creole fried corn make an appearance on the menu, as do short ribs, lobster tails, and a delicious banana pudding. The decor is fun and deliberately kitsch, with Marvel Comics props and cereal boxes dotting the space. 33 E. 83rd Street; 872-244-7505.
Porto [$$$] At age 25, Valencian wunderkind Marcos Campos is the youngest chef to earn a Michelin star in the U.S., for this upscale seafood restaurant inspired by the flavors of the Galician coast. You may be surprised to find tinned fish on the menu, but that region is renowned for its conservas preservation technique. There’s also imported fresh seafood cooked over an open flame, which fills the two dining rooms with a smoky, nostalgic aroma. 1600 W. Chicago Avenue; 312-600-6336.
A new farm-to-table vegan restaurant in Lincoln Park features healthy takes on deli standards with dishes like bagels with carrot lox and cashew cream cheese and chickpea “tuna” salad. As for beverages, try one of the unusual lattes: maple, fennel coriander, and black pepper; ginger, turmeric, and agave; or maple, vanilla, burnt sugar, nutmeg, and citrus. Chef Kevin Schuder uses locally sourced produce, so it’s not unusual to see a change in menu when, say, fresh heirloom tomatoes still warm from the sun are delivered unexpectedly. One caveat: This place is open for breakfast and lunch only.
Chef Joe Flamm, a Top Chef alum, calls the cuisine at his debut restaurant, named for both of his grandmothers, “Adriatic drinking food.” it’s a blend of his Italian heritage and the bold flavors of Croatian cuisine. The menu offers hearty fare like roasted vegetables, pasta, and grilled seafood, and the rustic interior by L.A.’s Studio UNLTD is inspired by Croatian konobas, or family-owned taverns. Weather permitting, there’s a seasonal patio.

Their filet mignon steak dog comes with smokey crumbled bacon, sport peppers, carrot-cabbage slaw, and a secret bourbon BBQ sauce, while other fun fixings include spicy truffle peanut butter sauce. The Hoxton, Chicago [$$] A trio of dining options are on offer at this recently opened hotel, all masterminded by AvroKO with Ennismore Design Studio. There’s Cabra Cevicheria, a rooftop Peruvian restaurant helmed by Stephanie Izard; groundlevel Cira, which serves Mediterranean fare all day long; and the appropriately dark and laidback basement Lazy Bird cocktail bar, which hosts live jazz, rock, and soul. The Listening Room at the Exchange [$$] Now for something a little different: a 50seat Japanese-style listening bar for vinyl obsessives. Located in Daniel Burnham’s historic 1904 Railway Exchange, just around the corner from the Art Institute of Chicago, the audiophile’s dream lounge plays myriad genres, so there’s something for all tastes. As for food, New American classics from James Beard–nominated chef Brian Huston cater to the peckish. 224 S. Michigan Avenue; 212-281-6165.
Wake ’n Bacon [$] This Filipino brunch spot in Lakeview offers up fun dishes like an adobe chicken Philly sandwich au jus, ube pancakes made of the nutty purple yams and coconut milk, and a bacon flight (apropos of the eatery name). The twist? You can add CBD to anything on the menu, including the Lavender Chamomile cold brew and the aforementioned dipping jus. The festivities were the culmination of an intense two-day in-person judging session (can’t do that by Zoom!), during which the 50 jurors selected 97 winners.
