Head up to floor 10 to test drive Jonathan Prestwich’s handy Essens occasional tables with conical bases made of recyclable polyethylene and tops in a plethora of materials at Sandler. Of course, the U.K. brand helmed by CEO Roy Sandler is best known for its seating, so there’s plenty of that on show, too, including Woodlook, an armchair that’s not timber but rather aluminum with a highly realistic baked-on wood-grain film. space 1091

Talk about a blend of art and technology: Awaken, an entirely custom hospitality collection of solution-dyed nylon rugs and broadloom from Shaw Contract, blends painting—from bold brush strokes to smooth watercolor blends—with digital elements created using AI. The floor coverings are made on a special new machine, the ColorCraft Pro. Find out more by visiting the showroom! space 1014
The latest Dorothy Cosonas upholstery collection for Wolf-Gordon, Crossings (named after the vertical and horizontal intersection of warp and weft), is highly personal, taking direct inspiration from needlework made by her mother in finishing school. Dreamweaver is the foundation, a SKU melding seven different yarn colors into a tweedy striated surface design that is familiar yet striking. The construction is polyester, partly postconsumer-recycled, with an environmentally correct topcoat and backing that renders the textile bleach-cleanable. space 10-161
too good!
Poltrona Frau’s collaboration with Faye Toogood is on show at Haworth. Named Squash, the collection reflects her soft, sculptural approach to furniture, particularly the armchair, with its effortlessly cool baggy and wrinkled leather upholstery. In red, it nods to Renzo Frau’s 1930’s Vanity Fair chair, whose archival bright-red leather Toogood fell for during a trip to the manufacturer’s Tolentino, Italy, factory. “It feels very refreshing to make a chair in such a strong, saturated shade,” the British design phenom notes. Agreed! space 312

catch the keynotes
Drop in (or tune in) at 10AM sharp, every day of NeoCon, to catch the show’s keynote lineup, featuring design-world thought leaders, all of whom will touch on the theme of storytelling. Kickstarting the series today is Bob Weis, Gensler’s global entertainment leader, who previously spent 30 years at Walt Disney Imagineering. He will discuss the power of storytelling in commercial design—a top priority for clients, stakeholders, and creators alike—and demonstrate how creatives can use this tool to bring vibrancy to everyday spaces.
On Tuesday morning, British-Nigerian artist and designer Yinka Ilori will parse the power of affirmation during an intimate fireside chat–style conversation with Cheryl S. Durst, IIDA’s exec VP and CEO (and Interior Design Hall of Fame member), and Khoi Vo, the CEO of ASID. A multidisciplinary talent known for his dynamic, joy-evoking public installations and color-forward aesthetic, Ilori conjures design’s power to tell stories of identity, culture, and purpose—and to elevate the individual while unifying the masses.
And finally, on Wednesday, Academy Award–winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, the first Black woman to win an Oscar in that category and a force behind Wakanda Forever, presents “Designing Afrofuturism.” Carter’s decades-long work in film proves that diversity in design and representation in story matters to audiences. She takes us on a concept-to-creation journey to design the Afrofuture and shares how the art of storytelling plays out in costume design and world-building alike. Don’t miss it!

Inspired by clean-lined modern architecture, the illi Bon acoustic pendant is crafted entirely from recycled PET felt. It’s the pint-size sister to Luxxbox’s illi and features the same signature grills as the original. Offered in 14-inch portrait and 9-by-16-inch landscape formats, the fixture is outfitted with a high-performance dimmable LED that consumes a mere 25W. “Simple, unobtrusive acoustic solutions are key for open-plan environments,” notes brand founder and creative director Jason Bird. Whether hanging solo or clustered for celestial ambiance, the luminaries are ideal for curating calm moments in coworking spaces or bustling hotels. space 7-9074

Reminiscent of an upturned cocktail glass, Interior Design Best of Year Award winner Daniel Germani’s Ice occasional tables are made entirely of blown glass—a first for Bernhardt Design. Available in Cobalt, Amber, and Smoke, the smallest is 13 inches across with an oblong, cantilevered top. Crafting these conversation starters, Germani says, “is a perfectly imperfect process, where the art of the maestro is represented in every unique piece.” We couldn’t agree more. space M-320

The commitment to circular production by Slalom is on ample display at NeoCon. For its latest offering, Bloom, the acoustic- and partition-systems manufacturer sources natural fibers and flower petals from fallow farmland. The plants are combined with linen and GRS-recycled plastic and thermoformed at high temperatures—a process that removes allergens and retains natural fragrance—to form sound-absorbing wall panels with olfactory effects and terrazzolike patterning. “The mixture of herbs and flowers changes with the seasons,” CEO Elettra de Pellegrin explains. Sprinkled with lavender and ochre notes, they’ll transform any commercial space into a botanical wonderland. space 7-5094

A chair that supplies softness, support, and style is a design trifecta! Anla by designer Anthony Land has a thick seat cushion and a sculpted back that make it both super comfy and supportive for long sits. The option of having ruched upholstery ups the style quotient, and different base options (cast-aluminum or metal-tube four-leg, sled, or five-blade, or wood) mean Anla can reside in a range of environments—from the dining room to the boardroom. Says Lane, “It’s a chair you don’t want to get out of.”

British-Nigerian artist-designer Yinka Ilori, who refers to himself as an architect of joy, breathes fresh life (and bold color) into textiles and wallcoverings via a new collection for Momentum. “The collaboration is a testament to the power of happiness created by strong community and storytelling,” the NeoCon keynote speaker says. That’s certainly true of Rhythms Surround You, an exuberant stripe stacking multiple arches, circles, chevrons, and triangles; Shower Me With Flowers, a modernist, geometric take on florals; and Eyes in Reflection, a grid of rounded motifs. Ilori began his career upcycling vintage furniture, a practice that has since expanded to collaborations with powerhouse brands like Adidas and LEGO. Now, with his first foray into commercial textiles, he aims to transform spaces into playful, creative hubs that “inspire, uplift, and even heal.”

Designed for acoustic privacy, the Bosse Cubes 4.0 series offers a sleek aesthetic. There’s the Bosselino, Telephone, and Work Cubes, sized for one person, and Space Cubes, which are larger, customizable room-in-rooms. The units are set up independently of a building envelope, thus can be flexibly positioned and moved around. Panes in the aluminum frame are made of 12mm-thick, laminated safety glass with integrated acoustic insulation film, and electrification is provided via a plug-and-play system. For cooler, calmer, clearer heads, consider the Bosse Ion Cloud, which introduces negative ions into its enclosed environments, minimizing the risk of infection from airborne pathogens and improving air quality. The design-forward Italian company heads to the Windy City to showcase wares that it dubs “acoustethics”: a portmanteau of acoustics, ethics, and aesthetics. Slalom’s sound-deadening ceiling baffles, wall panels, acoustic light fixtures and furniture, and curtains come in refined, sustainably produced felts and fabrics made in Italy. Innovation abounds, as evident in two new offerings: lightweight Woody, perfect for vertical applications, is composed of FSC-certified wood and recycled-plastic fibers that have been thermoformed via a patent-pending technology, while Bloom is a blend of natural fibers and real flower petals treated at high temperatures to retain their fragrance.

The Chicago-based manufacturer’s Carrara imagines the beauty of natural stone as a panel with exceptional acoustic properties. The product comprises two layers of 9mm felt, the top one intricately carved—with cracks and veins abstracting those of marble— to expose the contrasting-colored underlayer. The 4-by-10-foot panels are customizable in any of the brand’s 32 colors, can be mirrored horizontally or vertically, and come in five standard layouts: book match, slip match, reverse slip match, aesthetic match, and continuous match. As for materiality, Carrara earns sustainability points: the PET felt incorporates up to 60 percent preconsumerrecycled content. It’s a natural for workplaces and hospitality spaces alike.

The Portuguese wine industry treats cork sustainably: The offcuts that remain after bottle stoppers are stamped out of tree bark get passed through a chipper and compacted into blocks for reuse as other objects. The dimensions of those blocks sparked designer Paul Crofts’s Tejo: The sofa system’s 60 and 90cm modules are efficiently formed by cutting one such block down its length or width. Any dust generated from the process is returned to the chipper to be converted right back into more blocks—making production circular and almost zero-waste. Grown in the Alentejo region, which gave the sofa its name, cork is an ideal material for seating support: soft, warm, tactile. Plus, it regenerates naturally. The bark can be harvested every nine years for the full lifespan of the tree, often more than two centuries. Moreover, whereas most sofas use polyurethane-foam cushioning, Tejo employs natural latex, another self-generating material. The padding is wrapped in wool wadding before being upholstered in flax, wool, or hemp fabric.
“Frame, fabric, even the castors: Everything about Tejo is based on natural materials”

“The shift to 100 percent recycled materials comes at no cost to customers. We want to create an incentive to buy non-virgin material”
3form SPACE 1120
Know New Plastic is a cleverly named initiative from the material innovator that combines a traditional mechanical recycling process with a novel molecular one that increases the salvaged-content potential of 3form products. It creates new, high-quality materials from all sorts of waste unsuitable for mechanical recycling—clothing and carpet fibers, dense plastic containers, etc. Textures, the inaugural collection utilizing the process, comprises 100 percent recycled content, resulting in a lowercarbon-footprint resin than one created from newly extracted fossil fuels.
One textured Varia panel, for instance, diverts the equivalent of 3,296 plastic water bottles from the landfill. The line comes in 21 textures including six just-launched designs that don’t compromise the translucency and durability for which the brand is known. Available in 3form’s full portfolio of 250 colors, Textures is on view at DesignScene by Sandow.

“The Fortune chair represents the epitome of a Jumbo project: It’s symmetrical, commodious, and food-themed”
SPACE 1123A
When Heller CEO and president John Edelman discovered Jumbo on Instagram, he was immediately struck by how much the New York studio’s designs embodied the essence of his brand. Founded in 1971, Heller has produced award-winning modern furniture by some of the world’s greatest talents, among them Mario Bellini, Frank Gehry, and Massimo and Lella Vignelli; Jumbo founders Justin Donnelly and Monling Lee now join that elite roster. The pair explains that they have an abiding interest in “reductivism, whimsy, and gastronomy,” the latter passion influencing their Fortune chair, named for the iconic cookie and channeling its pinched-circle shape. Fully recyclable and U.S.-made using a high percentage of postconsumer-recycled plastic, the perch comes in six tasty hues: Oatmeal, Cookie, Olive, Tomato, Dark Cherry, and Licorice. This regionally inspired bistro focuses on French fare, but more specifically the Mediterranean flavors of the South, including Saint-Tropez and Provence. Located on the second floor of a new building overlooking Fulton Market, the spacious and pretty dining room (think cane chairs and feathery greenery!) is airy in the most literal sense, as its HVAC system is calibrated to allow for open windows in almost any weather. Among the classic menu items is that most stereotypically French of dishes: escargot, here served with herbgarlic butter, gruyère, and grilled sourdough.

For the French bakery’s just-launched Pilsen location, owner Esther Griego tapped Mexico City–born Katsuji Tanabe, a Top Chef alum, to devise a substantive café menu for breakfast and lunch. There are staples like egg sandwiches, plus unique brunch dishes such as a breakfast pasta with bacon, scrambled eggs, and parmesan. Depending on the time of day, these can be paired with coffees and rare teas or libations from the wine menu—and, of course, pastries ranging from conchas to palmiers. 2019 South Laflin Street; 773-929-1100

Award-winning restaurateur Billy Dec opens up a second location of his popular River North eatery, this time in Fulton Market. The atmosphere is moody and dimly lit, with paper lanterns and cane chairs fostering an earthy-organic vibe. The fusion dishes draw on culturally important classics from countries across Southeast Asia, but also incorporate nods to China (Szechuan chicken) and Japan (baked snow crab hand roll). A highlight is the Kamayan feast, a shareable array of celebratory Filipino fare featuring adobo pork belly crispy pata, chicken inasal, garlic shrimp, lumpia egg rolls, green beans, and jasmine rice alongside copious dipping sauces.

“A Night at Mister Kelly’s”
The halcyon days of Chicago’s hottest nightclub, Mister Kelly’s, are spectacularly recreated at The Newberry. From 1953 to 1975, the Gold Coast hot spot featured a diverse roster of jazz singers and comedians such as Natalie Cole, Billie Holiday, B.B. King, Richard Pryor, and Muddy Waters, attracting 200-plus crowds of martini-sipping tastemakers. Curated by Alison Hinderliter, who describes the erstwhile club as the Las Vegas of the Midwest, the free exhibit renders the zeitgeist of Mister Kelly’s through oral histories, recorded music, and documentary clips. A trove of archival material—signed albums, black-and-white photographs, playbills, matchbooks, cocktail napkins—captures the scenography of an electrifying era. “Foreign Exchange: Photography between Chicago, Japan, and Germany, 1920–1960”
The sinewy contours of Edo-era ink paintings and the clean lines and light-filtering partitions of traditional Japanese architecture served as prototypes for Walter Gropius’s modernist movement. Post WWII, dialogue between Bauhaus students and their Eastern contemporaries spread to the U.S., where photographers melding disparate cultural influences formed a distinct, irreverent vernacular. Through 100 works spanning 40 years, The Art Institute of Chicago’s “Foreign Exchange” explores this stark, stateless aesthetic cultivated by human-centric artists like Hungarian György Kepes and Institute of Design alumni Nathan Lerner and Yasuhiro Ishimoto. From cameraless abstractions to multiple exposures, the show celebrates a transcendent movement of light and shadows. Through September 9. 111 South Michigan Avenue; 312-443-3600
“Chicago Works: Maryam Taghavi”
Noghtes, the diamond-shape glyphs found in Arabic and Persian script, denote punctuation and cadence. For Iranian-born, Chicago-based artist Maryam Taghavi, these marks serve as blueprints to Iranian culture, a conduit between heritage and diaspora. Her debut solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago explores linguistic and optical ambiguity, with a series of airbrushed crepe de chine paintings and mirrored sculptures. Noghtes appear throughout, dotting the horizon of an Op Art interpretation of Lake Michigan in sunset hues and embedded in stainless-steel installations on the gallery walls. Some round apertures prismatically refract light and color, while others serve as periscopes, allowing viewers to adjust their gaze and find new perspectives…connecting the dots, so to speak. Through July 14. 220 East Chicago Avenue; 312-280-2660
“Alice
Shaddle: Fuller Circles”
The late Chicagoan’s preferred medium was paper: contorted, ruched, crimped, and tucked. An exhibition at Hyde Park Art Center, where Shaddle taught for decades, introduces the artist to a new generation and explores her work in the context of the city's modernist scene. “Fuller Circles” features cast-offs from immersive installations, a 1964 papier-mâché bas-relief sculpture, ’70’sera shadowboxes, and large-scale, colored-pencil drawings from 1978 to 1984. Also on display are architectural details from Frank Lloyd Wright’s George Blossom House, Shaddle’s home for 50 years. Here, she engaged with the architect's organic Prairie School style, riffing on its tessellated stained-glass sidelights and sawn-lunette paneling in her enigmatic mosaics. Through June 16. 5020 South Cornell Avenue; 773-324-5520
