missana In need of a little armchair travel? Transport yourself to an Asian forest with Bamboo, a new seating series by Ukrainian

product designer Pavel Vetrov. The sofa and armchair both sport an iron frame, with beech armrests, that recalls a stylized version of the design’s namesake; there’s also an outdoor variant with stainless-steel structure. Cushy polyurethane fill and contract-grade upholstery make for a soft sit. Look for Bamboo at MContrast in New York, Haute Living in Chicago, and Studiotwentyseven in Miami. missana.es

CAMALEONDA

b&b italia “At the beginning of the 1970s, upholstered furniture for the home had stagnated into tired traditional stereotypes and radical-provocative elitist forays,” Mario Bellini recalls. With Camaleonda—a portmanteau of camaleonte (chameleon) and onda (wave)— the designer achieved the novel idea of modularity via an innovative system of cables, hooks, and chromed-brass rings used to adjoin seats with backand armrests. For the design’s 50th anniversary reissue, the manufacturer preserves the dimensions and proportions that made it a classic, using original cutting patterns, but updated the padding to make it even comfier and more sustainable. When approached to embark on the update, Bellini had strong opinions: “Change the shape? No. The way it was intended is as good today as it was then. Change the materials? Yes. And that’s why I had a conversation with a company that is a leader in terms of its ability to transform a piece of furniture into a sustainable product.” Hear, hear. bebitalia.com

MARIO BELLINI

“Of all the objects I’ve designed, Camaleonda is perhaps the best in terms of its sense of freedom: There’s an infinite number of possible configurations”

“Change the mood of the piece by taking advantage of various color palettes”

bernhardt design French designer Océane Delain earns her stripes, so to speak, with the Gallery collection of ottomans, distinguished by a thin welt cord that highlights contrasting hues. “A play of bold colors and materials gives Gallery a carefree vibe and a distinctive personality,” she says. “But in more restrained fabrics and tonal contrasts, the design can look very elegant.” The piece is available as a round ottoman (in four sizes) and as a one, two-, and three-seat capsule-shape bench with mobile casters or nylon glides. For upholstery, choose any Bernhardt Textiles fabric or leather, or COM. Company creative director/president Jerry Helling worked with Delain on her acclaimed Mellow sofa and had been searching for a new opportunity to collaborate. “Océane is intuitively innovative,” he says. “I was confident that with her eye for proportion a simple ottoman would materialize into a memorable design.” bernhardtdesign.com

stellar works designer Oki Sato of Nendo product Kite recap There exist innumerable armchairs and sofas for lobbies and lounges, but well-executed designs for narrow spaces such as corridors and elevator lobbies are in short supply. Kite seeks to remedy that. A compact armchair with a powder-coated steel frame and upholstered shell, it was designed with petite commercial and hospitality spaces in mind. Its enveloping curved backrest is star of the show, yielding a design as much about leaning back as sitting down. The seat and back are independent of one another and can be specified in different combinations—shallow plus tall, deep plus short, etc.—to suit the available space and the degree of privacy desired.

“Any attempt to make a small armchair normally leads one to think of gradual elimination of the backrest”

BOMBOM

roche bobois In 2019, while perusing Roche Bobois’ Lisbon showroom for a lamp, Portuguese sculptor Joana Vasconcelos discovered the Mah Jong sofa, conceived by Hans Hopfer in 1971. Coincidentally, she was born that same year, which she saw as a serendipitous sign, and a collaboration with the manufacturer soon flourished. Vasconcelos has now reinterpreted half a dozen Roche Bobois pieces, including Mah Jong. This fall, in celebration of the company’s 60th anniversary, she launches Bombom, a furniture collection with a certain joie de vivre. Sofas in fluid shapes come in fresh, tart shades outlined by black stripes like licorice allsorts. Stretch cotton-blend upholstery covers the mobile backrests and the tri-density foam cushioning (on a solid beech base). Four rug designs complete the collection, including Tutti Frutti, a tufted-wool composition of colorful squiggly shapes contrasted with black. roche-bobois.com

juju papers Wood rubbings that studio founder Avery Thatcher made from fallen oak and pine trees provide the motif for Goldendale, her latest wallpaper. The rubbings were hand cut into simple shapes and arranged in a stacked, geometric pattern “inspired by a unique part of the Columbia River Basin, where the forest meets the grasslands,” Thatcher says. “The design evokes that meeting of natural worlds through the juxtaposition of order (geometry) and chaos (wood texture).” Available in four colorways, as well as custom hues, the wall covering is offered in two material types: 27-inch-wide clay-coated paper, hand screen-printed with water-based inks in small batches, for residential use; and 54-inch-wide nonwoven vinyl, Type II Mylar, or Terralon for commercial applications. jujupapers.com

misha Nodding to French landscape designer and philosopher Gilles Clément’s vision of the planetary garden in which vagabond plants migrate in wild profusion around the globe, designer Cristina Celestino has created Cabana, a lush new artisanal wall covering for the Milanese manufacturer. Enormous, imaginary flowers in vivid, unnatural colors sit against flat, repeated backdrops of ridged lines, vertical stripes, and micropatterns inspired by the world of textiles. A completely eye-popping landscape that mixes the organic with the geometric, its overall effect is of a continuous dialogue between order and disorder. Hand painted on silk, Cabana is offered in two colorways—Golden Sky and Golden Beach—with the option of adding handmade metal-foil inserts for an even richer effect. mishawallcoverings.com

kvadrat Because of the pandemic, Knit!—the fourth iteration of the Danish textile company’s ongoing Design Project—debuted in September both physically, at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen, and digitally, as an interactive online exhibition viewable worldwide. For the show, 28 international designers and artists have created pieces using Kvadrat Febrik knitted textiles. Highlights include InterPersona, Australian Benja Harney’s Surrealist assemblage of eyes and lips; fellow Aussie Adam Goodrun’s Conversation Series, a rainbow take on Victorian love seats; New York–based Visibility’s Living Room, a circle of Middle Eastern–inspired low-toground seating; An Alternative Sample Room, Hong Kong–based Elaine Yan-Ling Ng/The Fabrick Lab’s three-dimensional swatch displays; Shed, a tentlike shelter by Julie Richoz from France; Dutch Studio Truly Truly’s glass-mounted Coalesce chaise; and Salamandre, a fantastical textile landscape by French designer Léa Baert. fabric & wall covering BRADLEY L BOWERS

“Inspired by optical illusions, the collection translates scientific principles into visual depth and movement”

Science and nature combine to mesmerizing effect in Moire, the New Orleans–based designer’s latest wallpaper collection. “My aim was to explore and evoke the soft rolling curves of sand dunes, wind-worn rock formations, and the colors of the desert,” says Bowers, who applied technology to the task, using custom algorithms and scripts to create a dynamic pattern of rich hues and sensuous visual textures. “The collection offers a contemporary interpretation of how light and color can create the essence of movement in a variety of living spaces.” Patterns like Ripple are available in eight evocatively named colorways—Canyon, Dune, Seafoam, Fiji, Inkstone, Mandarin, Mimosa, and Ochre—and printed with nontoxic water-based inks on Type II commercial grade paper, in 27-inch-wide, 180-inchlong rolls. bradleylbowers.com 62

NAKATA SKETCH

STROMA SKETCH

“I redrew inspiring images as abstract and organic patterns that are subtle with a quiet sense of movement”

wolf-gordon fabric & wall covering

Starting with an aerial photograph of vineyards, designer Kathrin Hagge sketched meandering paths that evolved through several iterations into the stitched, organic pattern of Nakata, a 56-inch-wide upholstery polyester. Turning to the lacelike image of cellular wood viewed through a microscope led to Stroma, a 57-inch-wide polyester in which float yarns are twisted into a mesh pattern bound to a tightly woven ground. Both fabrics feature recycled content and excellent durability—63,000 and 51,000 double rubs on the Wyzenbeek scale, respectively—and both are bleach-cleanable, too. Nakata is available in 13 colors, and Stroma in seven. wolfgordon.com

marrimor objects With an ingenious design inspired by the pull-tab on a vintage Coke can, the Toof acts as both a dependable side table and a comfortable pouf, without compromising either function or aesthetics. The artful piece comprises a powdercoated metal globe with a flat top and cut-out sides in which nestles an upholstered ball of the same shape and dimensions. Pull the two pieces apart and an ottoman emerges like a fluffy chick from its shell, which is left behind intact as a standalone table. Brand designers Tanja Hinder and Lauren Bugliarisi show an equally playful touch when it comes to the 10 spirited colorways and blendfabric textures—including wool, alpaca, linen, mohair, boucle, and velvet—in which the 17-inch-tall, 24-inchacross cute-as-a-button twofer is offered. marrimor.com

PORTRAIT: MATT HARRINGTON

Ah, the golden age of travel. The great transatlantic liners of the 1930s through ’50s were sumptuous indeed. Some were decorated by René Prou, father-in-law of the company founder. To pay homage to the family ancestor, new furniture artistic director Sam Baron launches Verso, a collection codesigned with David Raffoul and Nicolas Moussallem of Beirut studio David/Nicolas. The pair reinterpreted Prou’s elegant space-saving tropes in, for instance, a slipper lounge chair with integrated bookcase and a low ottoman topped by a tablet. Both are made of solid oak engraved with fine grooves and feature either mohair velvet or fabric designed by Prou that’s been reissued for the occasion. Also on offer are the Versus bronzed-glass pedestal tables and multimedia folding screen with shelf, all in stained, varnished oak. pierrefrey.com

PAOLA NAVONE

WATERMELON FEBO MARTINE BEDIN

de rosso Celebrating, reinterpreting, and adding to its 40-year-plus heritage—a colorful blend of the Pop Art, Alchimia, and Memphis movements—the Italian manufacturer has launched a seven-piece collection of limitededition furniture made in collaboration with the laminate brand Abet Laminati. The five designers involved are of disparate nationality, generation, and gender. They include Milanese doyenne and Hall of Famer Paola Navone, whose “ironic” Watermelon sideboard (one of two she contributes) sports a green top and sides and a bright-red front dotted with black “seeds,” so it looks like a large rectangular version of its namesake. French architect Martine Bedin, a founding member of the Memphis group, offers Slate, a totemlike bookcase comprising stacked blocks of laminate and Belgian black marble. Ebullient “pop graphics”—trumpets, padlocks, fountain pens—adorn veteran Italian artist Ugo Nespolo’s simple Febo table, turning it into “a private party, an indispensable joy.” And a young master of exuberant design, London-based Adam Nathaniel Furman, goes the zoomorphic route with Lounge Hog, a bright-hued low table with a rounded, spikey top inspired by the hedgehog—“a naughty little creature for your living room.” derosso.it

“With Knock Out we were able to prove that innovation, discovered through the process of design and construction, exists also in very small-scale projects”

pinta acoustic Having long worked with the German manufacturer on large-scale acoustic products, sustainabilityconscious architect Marie Aigner turns her attention to smaller sound-absorbing objects with Knock Out, a furniture collection in recyclable PET. But just because the portfolio is acoustically engineered and ecologically responsible doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. The witty and colorful pieces include Elton, a Greek temple obliged to serve as a table; Cactus, a coat stand sparked by a child’s cacti collection; a floor lamp, Rocketman, straight out of a comic strip; two chairs, Dumbo and Peter, that evoke riding on an elephant and sitting on Maurizio Cattelan’s solid-gold toilet, respectively; and John, a table inspired by Max Bill graphic designs. atelier gulla jónsdóttir designer Gulla Jónsdóttir product Puzzle recap The Icelandic-born, Los Angeles–based architect/designer brings a beguiling blend of mathematical rigor and sensual poetry to her buildings, interiors, and furniture. Her latest piece—a limited-edition, handmade coffee table comprising interlocking blocks of walnut and burnished bronze—was inspired by the gathering of friends: Each element is separate but, like individuals joining their fellows for social pleasure, the wood and metal pieces come together to form a singular nexus around which conversations ignite (masked and safely distanced, of course!). Jaunty and oh-so clever, the Alça side table by Brazilian designer Guilherme Wentz is just the right size for daily needs. In steel powder-coated black, white, cypress (green), or Toasted Nut (brown), its 14-inch-across surface is the ideal catchall for the odds and ends one accumulates throughout the day: cellphone, beverage, hand sanitizer. Its smart features include the handy, um, handle (alça is the Portugese translation) and the fact that the tabletop, measuring 21.7 inches high, can slide over the arm of most lounge chairs and sofas, creating the perfect spot to rest a laptop. sossegodesign.com

MOOVE X GROOVE

object carpet It took three years for Ippolito Fleitz Group to develop its new carpet collection for the German manufacturer. Textures and colors were created, tested, and combined early in the design phase, and their effects explored in collages featuring shaggy sheepskin next to fine silk and coarse raffia, trendy nail varnish next to bright Yves Klein blue. The goal: to realize the full sensuality, coziness, and sense of security that textile flooring can provide. The results: eight products in a variety of structures and surfaces that have most commercial applications—including office, hospitality, and retail—covered. Standouts include Flow x Glow, a three-dimensional sisal look with a rhythmic effect and sophisticated details, available in 13 colorways; and Move x Groove, which has a dynamic, ever-changing appearance thanks to its high-and-low loop construction, in 19 colorways. Made of Econyl recycled nylon in a total of 111 colors, all styles are available as carpets and rugs, and many as acoustic tile, too. object-carpet.com

lighting brokis Named for the traditional Japanese paper lamps used to line the paths of temples and shrines during festivals, Bonbori is the Czech maker’s first outdoor lighting offering. Japanese industrial designer Fumie Shibata, who founded Design Studio S in 1994, had the idea to translate the familiar form into a fixture engineered for connection via underground wiring. A handblown shade offered in opal, opaline, or transparent glass (the latter in smoke gray or brown) levitates on a stainless-steel stem treated to an environmentally friendly powder-coat robust enough to weather the great outdoors. In three matte colorways: iron black, copper metallic, and gray metallic. brokis.cz

From the storied Italian maker’s Masters collection comes Projecteur 365, a floor lamp by none other than Le Corbusier. Working from sketches, drawings, and prototypes of the fixture—first created in 1954 for India’s Chandigarh High Court—the manufacturer collaborated closely with the Le Corbusier Foundation to produce an industrial-look lamp with a painted-aluminum body (available in night blue, white sand, and moka). A curved glass diffuser with sandblasted interior held in place by chromed screws creates a mesmerizing pool of illumination. The collection also includes indoor and outdoor versions of a wall or ceiling fixture and a pendant. nemolighting.com

PH SEPTIMA

Danish architect, author, and designer Poul Henningsen may have passed away in 1967, but his Modernist creations live on. A stellar example: His PH Septima lamp still stuns with its seven shades of alternating clear and sandblasted borosilicate glass—causing the light from the LED source to almost undulate. Satin-polish brass hardware is left untreated in order to develop a natural patina. The fixture was originally designed sometime between 1927 and 1931 yet is still contemporary. louispoulsen.com

lzf No stranger to turning out a fresh take, Spain’s Gazpacho Studio often looks to the past for ideas. Case in point: Its Maruja assemble-it-yourself pendant for the Valencia-based brand was inspired by traditional chandeliers found in Spanish palaces of yore. To update the design for today’s interiors, the team chose handmade wood-veneer strips available in a rainbow of eight hues including yellow, sea blue, and natural cherry and beech. Each strip clips onto a pin on the matte-black or nickel frame—no tools needed—providing a DIY opportunity for the end user. This production method also allows for flat-pack shipping, a first for the maker. The best part? The lightweight wood slats ruffle in the breeze, providing kinetic feedback.

aboutwater by boffi and fantini This stainless-steel sink fitting hides an unexpected element: The spout does not touch the countertop surface it appears mounted to but hovers a smidgen above, anchored instead by the adjacent cylindrical handle. (Twisting its top adjusts the faucet flow.) “The tap is attached ‘invisibly’ on the side to look like it’s floating,” explains its creator, Michael Anastassiades. “That’s the surprise of the design.” Dubbed AA/27, it’s an offering from Aboutwater, the tapware partnership of two industry titans, Boffi and Fantini. FRANCESCO MEDA

“Today, as never before, ‘kitchen-mania’ is all the rage”

dada Sheltering in place has encouraged us to become tidier, with life being lived almost entirely at home. Orderliness is especially important in the kitchen, argues Milanese designer Francesco Meda, who tackles the problem with Sistema XY, a customizable accessory system that works with various wall-mount and self-standing Dada kitchen models. Recalling the Cartesian coordinates, XY develops vertically and horizontally by means of a series of extruded profiles. The basic “axis” of the design is a central accessory channel, featuring places for items such as knife holders, chopping boards, spice jars, salt and pepper grinders, power boards, smokeextraction hoods, and plate racks. A slide-out 51-inch-square wooden board can also be used as an informal table. moltenigroup.com

“I started by cutting up shapes and thinking of Matisse and his scissors”

STEPHEN ANTONSON

PINCH

nest studio The hardware design firm founded by Jessica Davis pairs with New York plaster artist Stephen Antonson to bring forth the Pinch collection, a celebration of handwork. Antonson cut paper shapes and then created prototypes in aluminum foil, tin, and plaster gauze, eventually alighting on a variety of organic forms that felt just right. The plastersculpted prototypes were then cast in brass and hand finished, retaining the marks of the artist’s touch. The resulting series encompasses three sculptural knobs, a cup pull, and two sizes of handles, all available in four finishes: matte white, polished nickel, blacked bronze, and polished unlacquered brass. Use them to adorn cabinetry or receptive furniture pieces. neststudiocollection.com

outdoor etc. Take it outside—or keep it indoors, if you must—with a jaunty planter series from the Kimball International offshoot and National Office Furniture sister brand. Dubbed Vernita, a nod to its proliferation of greenery, the bilevel unit doubles the available square footage for foliage (or provides an area above or below for storage) while delineating space. Divide a patio into socially distanced areas, create zones for various activities such as eating and sunbathing, or make a border along property lines. The planters measure 10 by 24 inches and come in three heights up to 35 1/4. Add drain holes in the black powder-coated steel container for outdoor use. lifeworketc. com

LAPALA

expormim What’s old is new, or so the saying goes. For example: The Spanish maker re-edits Lapala, a design throwback from 1998, when all were riveted by the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal and The Truman Show was in theaters. Designed by erstwhile studio Lievore Altherr Molina (now Lievore + Altherr Désile Park and Estudi Manel Molina, respectively), the chair and armchair come in new colorways. Choose between solid (black, taupe, forest green, etc.) or speckled options (including turquoise, orange, and oxide) for the seat and back, and from numerous lacquers for the stainless-steel-tube frame. Artisans at the brand’s Moixent factory handweave each chair with great care from 7-mmthick polypropylene or polyester rope. Stackable and made with materials created to withstand harsh weather, the seat can be used outdoors, but looks just as elegant inside. expormim.com
