dries otten “My best ideas come to me when I’m riding my bike,” Belgian furniture designer Dries Otten divulges. During one such cycling session he hatched the concept of a bench that experiments with circular shapes—a recurring theme in his oeuvre. The result, Japon, floats solid meranti-wood beams on a round plywood base handlacquered a candy-like orange hue. It’s a study in contrast: between lines and circles, heavy and light. Otten envisions Japon in a greenhouse, on a veranda, or any place one might want to sit and take a quiet moment. driesotten.be

artek It’s a line drawing in three dimensions. That’s the idea behind the Rope chair by French design duo Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. Although the frame looks monolithic, it’s really two distinct materials: stiff powder-coated steel tubes thread through with a sturdy but pliable rope (in polyester or flax) that was developed for marine use and gives the chair an unexpected suppleness and comfort. Topping off the frame is a seat of form-pressed beech plywood with an ash veneer. artek.fi

ARMADILLO
expormim Alberto Sanchéz and Eduardo Villalón of multidisciplinary design team MUT have been collaborating with Expormim, a fellow Valencia-based company, for years. Their latest collective effort is a new take on a classic design: the papasan chair. Called Armadillo, its curved shape is reminiscent of the small armored mammal that curls into a ball when threatened. The indoor lounge chair is handmade from rattan rods that are bent and sanded, then given a three-step treatment for UV resistance. Accessorize the neat seat with an optional cushion upholstered in anything from natural leather to velvet. Through West | NYC Home. westnyc-home.com; expormim.com

juju papers The Portland, Oregon, studio’s founder, artist Avery Thatcher, gives painterly strokes and hand-cut silhouettes an underlying geometric order in Openwork, her latest wallpaper collection. “I looked to the grid as both inspiration and tool,” says the designer, who overlaid the matrix with irregular shapes to produce three complementary patterns: Natural Gifts, a loose-limned lattice in brilliant hues; Dimes, lively rows of coin-size dots on a solid ground; and Mixed Signals, a balanced arrangement of positive and negative figures cut from graph paper. Available in nine colorways, as well as custom colors, the wallpapers are offered in two material types: 27-inch-wide, clay-coated paper for residential use; and 54-inch-wide nonwoven vinyl, Mylar, or Terralon for commercial applications. jujupapers.com

knoll textiles Anchoring the Decennium collection—a —a nine-product fabric and wall covering portfolio celebrating the newborn decade—Floressence is a viscose-polyester upholstery with an allover organic pattern inspired by cloud formations. The mesmerizing skyborne shapeshifters are conjured by digitally printing large-scale abstractions on a ground of custom-dyed, ribbed velvet. The color of the base cloth peeks through the ribs slightly, adding layering and dimension to the visual texture. The 54-inch-wide fabric, with a 54-inch horizontal and a 156-inch vertical repeat, is available in six colorways, and while as soft to the touch as it is on the eye, boasts a heavy-duty 100,000 Wyzenbeek double-rub rating. knolltextiles.com

larsen Legendary textile designer Jack Lenor Larsen drew inspiration from his own peerless archives when creating Larsen Performance, his first venture into the world of indoor/outdoor fabrics. The new collection, a small group of patterned jacquards developed with Sunbrella fiber technology, also reflects the designer’s life and work at LongHouse Reserve, his home in East Hampton, New York. The designs include Midsummer, a velvety soft chenille floral; Chinoise, a damask-motif matelassé; Hieroglyph, a stripe that reads like ancient cuneiform; Inscription, an allover graphic with mazelike stitchery; and Cakewalk, a breezy multicolor stripe. The sophisticated palette ranges from porcelain white to pebble gray, brilliant coral to darkest ebony, and intense marine to tawny sand. All are bleach cleanable and feature soil- and stainrepellant finishes. Through Cowtan & Tout. cowtan.com

WATERCOLOR
rosemary hallgarten
Inspired by North Africa, from the inky blues and crisp whites of the Atlas Mountains to the hot tints of the Sahara Desert, the British-born designer’s Bédouine collection of fabric and flooring takes the aesthetic of ancient traditions and merges them with modern design elements. Among its rich and versatile offerings is Watercolor, a drapery and bedding fabric that, as its name suggests, infuses washes of subdued shades with pops of brilliant color. In a playful nod to the designer’s popular Ombré textiles, the new fabric is hand dyed to create artisanal gradations of striated tone. It’s a unique effect that complements contemporary spaces or adds an unexpected charge to more earthy settings. The 50-inch-wide alpaca-and-linen fabric has a beguiling sheen, hangs perfectly, and offers three height options (12, 25, or 60 inches) for the watercolor band, which is available in five hues from a cheery raspberry to a moody charcoal. rosemaryhallgarten.com

FABRIC & WALL covering IRIS WANG, OLYMPIA MACHU
Drawing inspiration from her team’s avid globetrotting, founder and design director Iris Wang has launched the Traveler collection, a 15-fabric portfolio that embodies the sense of adventure evoked by distant destinations—not least, the Peruvian Andes, which are celebrated in Machu, the company’s first foray into neon. As vivid as an Inca sunrise, the reversible wool-polyester upholstery felt comes in four fully saturated fluorescent colors—pink, orange, yellow, and green—that will give an energizing charge to any contemporary space. With an 85,000 Wyzenbeek double-rub rating, the 58-inch-wide fabric is as tough as it is spirited, and pairs perfectly with its sibling, Picchu, a dark-gray felted ground embroidered with a geometric pattern in the same neon palette. Another peak in the collection is the cotton-nylon Olympia, which superimposes a honeycomb motif over a wavy organic pattern resembling malachite—the name, not coincidentally, of the sultry green colorway shown. brentanofabrics.com

Architect Arielle Assouline-Lichten—an alum of Bjarke Ingels Group, Kengo Kuma & Associates, and Snøhetta— founded Slash Objects to “change the notion of recycled products.” In her enterprising hands, waste becomes beautiful and useful, part of the circular economy. Take the pill-shape Capsule side table: Its cast-concrete form, inlaid with brass, is wrapped in pure black or flecked postconsumer-recycled rubber. “I wanted Capsule to feel like an elegant sidekick,” Assouline-Lichten notes. “An enhancement for any room, it can sidle up to another favorite piece of furniture.” The larger of the two standard sizes is 20 inches high, 23 wide, and 10 deep but all measurements, as well as materials and finishes, are customizable. An optional built-in electrical outlet on the tabletop boosts WFH (or, rather, work-from-couch…) functionality. slashobjects.com

luis pons design lab The humble hinge was the starting point for the Miami-based interior and product designer’s Tangara collection, crafted by expert Brazilian joiner Vermeil. Cabinets made of marine-grade plywood, solid-wood veneer, and lacquer assemble via CNC-cut, hand-finished “teeth” resembling topstitching. Stack and combine (or divide and isolate) units to create sideboards (with optional retro mirrored bar), dressers, nightstands, and so on. “Because the pieces are modular, they can group together to adjust to clients’ needs,” Pons explains. MARIGOLD SUN
“The designs focus on the impermanence and interconnectedness of our world”
lawson-fenning x mquan Behold these bicoastal beauties. Glenn Lawson and Grant Fenning of SoCal furniture studio Lawson-Fenning have rebooted their collaboration with Brooklyn ceramicist Michele Quan of MQuan Studio to create a collection of side tables inspired by Far Eastern iconography. A petite white-oak base, fabricated by Lawson-Fenning in Los Angeles, supports a hand-built and -painted ceramic top designed by Quan and crafted in New York. “Every shape and design represents a different concept,” Lawson says. “Motifs include the sun, moon, rainbows, and rings.” Quan draws inspiration from the teachings of Buddhism and its extensive visual language. Her lexicon includes Radiant Full Moon’s aureole of diverging lines and the U-shape motif of Kora With Black Rings. A saffronyellow accent vivifies Marigold Sun, while Rainbow Prism speaks a 1970’s color story. Each table is a one-off.

and personal as something you’d find in your own home. Developed in collaboration with workplace furniture company Hightower and Scottish product designer Nick Ross, the collection encompasses low- and high-back chairs, a sofa, a pouf, and a bench. “I wanted to create the feeling of a primal place,” Ross says, explaining that the chair was based on the idea of “dwelling.” It’s destined to be your favorite new home base in the office. “Working with Wolf-Gordon’s design team to give archival motifs a new life pushed the collection to the next level”
TANGLED UP
wolf-gordon For her first collaboration with the company, designer Ghislaine Viñas combed its archives for discontinued prints and colorways she could resurrect in modernized form. Hence Repeat Offenders, three bold patterns with a tongue-in-cheek approach to reinterpreting the retro stripes, dots, and repeating geometrics she found, while also exploring vintage fashion trends from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. Even the design names are a witty nod to the cyclic nature of creativity: Holding Pattern, a composition of linear paths and rounded forms that leads the eye in unbroken loops; Vicious Circle, a large-scale geometric inspired by the interaction of circles and lines in an ’80s design; and Tangled Up, a continuous pattern of rippling lines that occasionally intertwine playfully. Digitally printed on 54-inch-wide vinyl or, in some instances, Mylar for a metallic effect, the designs are offered in a total of 31 colorways, ranging from primary hues, a Viñas signature, to tone-on-tone neutrals. wolfgordon.com

DB
Launched two years ago, Stockholm designer Thomas Bernstrand’s DB screen system is lauded for its acoustic properties and customizable accessories. Now, the line goes 3-D with DB Pillar. The expanded collection comprises a mélange of columns with acoustic-fabric upholstery that reduces low-frequency noise. Ranging from 14.8 to 33.4 inches across, DB Pillar stands 19.7 to 76 inches tall and, like its predecessor, can be customized with various gadgets, from coat hooks and magazine racks to a magnetic whiteboard surface. Desk and stool versions can be assembled into collaborative workstations, while flowerpot and trellis styles round out the collection. And, to reduce waste, Abstracta fills each Pillar with textile cutoffs from its Småland, Sweden, factory—resulting in a circular production process. Through Unika Vaev. unikavaev.com

The manufacturer is adding a gobsmacking 180 new patterns to its already extensive 3M DI-NOC self-adhesive vinyl-film covering collection. Based on comprehensive research to determine the latest design trends, the introduction includes solid colors, stone patterns, metallic effects, leather looks, and wood grains inspired by that midcentury American classic, the woodie station wagon. Engineered to adhere to rough or smooth substrates, DI-NOC can be employed in a wide variety of design projects, from renewing furniture, millwork, and doors to refinishing walls, columns, and other architectural elements. Previously suitable for indoor use only, the 48-inch-wide, fingerprint- and dirt-resistant material now includes options that can be applied outdoors, allowing for even more possible savings in time, labor, and material costs on refurbishment jobs. designtex.com

nanimarquina Take a gander at legend Jaime Hayon’s Silhouette. Intertwining line drawings of imaginary Picasso-esque faces adorn the indoor-outdoor collection. The interior and tapestry versions, both in Ghazni Afghan wool with New Zealand wool embroidery, mark Nanimarquina’s debut of the kilim technique, a laborious handmade process that adds texture and soft volume. The Brooklyn gallery teamed with the encaustic specialist to realize an artist-designed tile series, featuring trippy omnidirectional patterns by 14 talents. Object & Totem’s Julianne Ahn conceived the retro-inflected Op-Eye Grid, the modules combining to form a geometric lattice overlaid with bullseyelike concentric circles. Pastel hues soften the textile maven Aelfie Oudghiri’s Djerba, a sharp, architeconic pattern that conveys an au courant edge. Ceramicist Josephine Heilpern of Recreation Center created Memphis-esque Movi, which can be arrayed in numerous ways to form compositions that lean from Art Deco to Pop Art. And with Core, sculptor and Brooklyn Home Company artist-in-residence Fitzhugh Karol sketches out an uber-elemental motif in colorway ivory white/celano. concretelove.com

luceplan Call it micro-architecture. The table lamp Fienile (“hayloft” in Italian) is based on designer Daniel Rybakken’s childhood memories of a farm. “Walls” of satinfinish anodized aluminum and a CNC-milled pitched “roof” subtly suggest a simple rural building. LEDs placed under the eaves wash the sides with a warm glow and focus illumination on the surrounding surface—an area conceived as a delicately lit stage for little treasures (miniature carved-wood animals, anyone?). “I imagined a product that could shed light on our objects of affection, kept close at hand on a table in a special position,” Rybakken says. The table lamp with touch-sensor dimmer is 8.6 inches high by 17.7 wide and comes in three finishes: rose, forest green, and Prosecco. Suspension and floor models are also available. luceplan.com

MESHARY ALNASSAR WITH RADICI, ULIVO, AND TRAMONTO
RADICI
The Kuwaiti interior architect’s 410 collection of silver travertine light sculptures, each a hair over 9 feet tall, riffs on childhood nostalgia. “The series is inspired by my longest influence: my grandfather and the home he built for our family,” AlNassar says. “He used marble carved on site in abundance and didn’t fall short of planting trees in the garden.” Smartphone-appcontrolled Radici emulates the deep roots of a palm tree. The floor lamp’s bulbous base appears split in half, tapering into a trunk embedded with a thin LED light strip that throws an ambient glow when placed facing a wall. Angular Tramonto (“sunset” in Italian), abstracts a horizon line, while Ulivo’s three slender stems were sparked by olive trees. The fiberglass-reinforced travertine is sourced from Rapolano, Italy, and sports multicolored veining layered from centuries of volcanic eruptions. mesharyalnassar.com

atelier areti With their new collection, Austrian-French sisters Gwendolyn and Guillane Kerschbaumer—founders of the London-based interdisciplinary studio Atelier Areti—explore shapes and emotions, light and shadow. Called Hormé for the ancient Greek concept of a divinely inspired impulse, the line comprises lighting fixtures— pendants, desk lamps, sconces, and more—that express different moods. Brushed brass or powder-coated metal tubes, triangles, and circles assemble into geometric artworks. Each soulful piece is intended to echo a feeling like courage, playfulness, or vulnerability, adding not just good looks but also a latent complexity to any space. atelierareti.com

“Dims launched with a goal to transform great design from aspirational to accessible”
dims A table lamp inspired by Doric columns marks the direct-to-consumer brand’s lighting debut. The company was founded in 2018 to provide highquality sustainable items, designed by zeitgeisty independent ateliers such as Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, without the high price tag. This neoclassical offering, 3-D-printed by Gantri, is by Seoul’s Studio Word, from which the lamp takes its name. Crafted of an uber-ecofriendly custom material, corn polylactic acid (farm to table, indeed), Word’s fluting has a soothing sense of rhythm. During the day, Word is pure white—just like a marble column—while at night it comes to life with a soft glow. dimshome.com

aqua creations MANTA RAY
Founded by artist-couple Albi and Ayala Serfaty in 1992, Aqua Creations takes its name from the ocean, and its light fixtures are inspired by the organic forms found within those watery depths. Manta Ray, a convex anodizedaluminum panel resembling the sea creature, uses responsive RGB LED technology to create an immersive chromatic environment. There are 10 pre-set color combinations—but no less than 16,387,064 options available overall. Use a smartphone or computer to adjust the shade range, dim each sconce or pendant’s brightness from 100 to 0.1 percent, or load images and video to the 47.2-inch-wide LED display. esrawe studio SHIFTING PARÁBOLA 02
At MASA gallery’s “Recover/Uncover” exhibition in a stately Mexico City mansion earlier this year, design polymath Héctor Esrawe presented Shifting Parábola, two fluid sculptures that explore the way light travels over a continuous metal surface. Matte-finish brass ribbons drape like tensile satin from anchor points on ceiling, wall, or floor. LEDs nestled into crooks bounce light onto the 7.8-inch-wide brass strips. There are two variants: 01, which touches the floor, and 02, which does not. The former measures 153 inches high by 49 wide, the latter 118 by 55. Each is limited to a run of 10. ceramica cielo Viva Italia! A rainbow coalition of hues is given earthy depth in the trendsetting company’s palette of glossy enamels, Acque di Cielo. Colorways Oltremare, Smeraldo, Alga, Corallo, Ninfea, and Anemone traverse the landscape of the natural world, from emerald and navy to taupe and muted teal. (Those craving warmth might opt for tones of saffron or terra-cotta.) Artistic directors Andrea Parisio and Giuseppe Pezzano carried out alchemical experiments to arrive at the nuanced shades, which can be applied to many of the manufacturer’s wares—such as countertop bowl basin Tino. The new hues form a high-shine counterpart to the company’s matte offerings, Terre di Cielo, already a smash hit. ceramicacielo.it

New collaborations forged across the design sphere include a partnership with architect David Lopez Quincoces, who offers up Helm, a clean-lined faucet that reinterprets a cross-handle tap— and marks Zucchetti’s first allstainless-steel item. Other highlights from the company’s 90year history include interior designer Sybille de Margerie’s 2017 Nude, which pairs crystal handles inspired by glass stoppers with a faucet sporting a swanlike neck. Looking for options? You can paint the rippling surround of the aptly named Raindrop showerhead any color under the sun, from fluorescent pink to muted olive. Or leave as is: The satinstainless-steel AISI 304 unit integrates into the ceiling, enveloped by concentric waves of the manufacturer’s Flumood solid surfacing that reproduce the effect of a raindrop hitting a lake’s surface. The design is the brainchild of Calvi Brambilla, the multidisciplinary Milanese firm founded by Fabio Calvi and Paolo Brambilla. The pair plumbed the depths of their imagination to conceive the introduction, which gives unexpected threedimensionality to the shower stall, becoming a part of the bathroom architecture versus a fixture applied to it. antoniolupi.it

morgan levine ceramics Last spring, following 15 years as a prop stylist, Morgan Levine branched out into marbleized dishware, which she handmakes using slab-building and pottery-wheel techniques in Brooklyn, New York. “My work is slipware, meaning that I create patterns using colored liquid clays called slips,” she explains. Every one-of-a-kind piece is a record of the maker’s gesture and the slip’s fleeting fluidity, with unpredictable organic shapes and subtle layers of color. Her designs—including the Cosmic collection of dinner and side plates, pinch dishes, soup bowls, platters, and the like— reference 17th-century joggled Staffordshire slipware, Turkish Ebru patterns, Venetian marbled papers, and French agateware. “The play between intricate details and soft gradients evokes images of the sky, the ocean, and the cosmos,” Levine notes. She also dabbles in neoninflected florals. Each clear-glazed piece is dishwasher and microwave safe: form and function, covered. morganlevineceramics.com

reform Sustainable Danish womenswear brand Designers Remix recently added a splash of peachy sunshine to its Copenhagen showroom with the help of IKEA-kitchen-customization specialist Reform. Inspired by makeup palette hues, the fashion label’s creative director, Charlotte Eskildsen, pieced together a tailored look with Reform’s Basis, a style inspired by midcentury Scandinavian design that features painted fronts available in an array of colors—1,950 to be exact. And while most clients commit to a single shade, Eskildsen opted for several tints of blush and beige to work with her upcoming collection. The cabinetry is enhanced by a matching hue on the walls and rosy Getacore acrylicbound solid surface countertops—which, when viewed from the gallerylike white showroom, appear to glow from within. reformcph.com

The flat’s wet room makes use of a suite of Drummonds products befitting the period architecture: Martin Brudnizki’s Ladybower basin in white Arabescato marble is paired with the Chessleton lever three-hole mixer, Freestanding towel rail, and Grand shower pipes and shower rose—all in a brushed-brass finish that will patinate over time. JUDY SMILOW
A decade after his death, furniture designer Mel Smilow had fallen into obscurity, until daughter Judy Smilow reignited interest in his career by establishing Smilow Design in 2012 to reissue his midcentury classics. When she passed in 2018 after a battle with ALS, her husband Steven Schoenfelder and daughter Maia Smilow Schoenfelder took up the mantle. Determined to safeguard Judy’s legacy, they also began rereleasing her own archival glassware designs. Among these is Dots and Dashes, the self-descriptive 1986 series first sold by the MoMA Design Store, later joining the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. Produced with partially recycled content, the 12 ½-ounce drinking glasses are sold in sets of two or six. smilowdesign.com

LOUVERS AND SLATS
Fortina is a remarkable architectural system that will fool your senses: replicating wood slats and louvers with aluminum and a hyper-realistic non-pvc surface, in a multitude of wood species and metal finishes. Available for both interior and exterior applications.

WOOD
As studies reinforce the health benefits of using natural materials indoors, designers are turning their focus to perhaps the most traditional of them all: wood. Consider the Australian manufacturer’s latest line of door and cabinet hardware, conceived by founder Joseph Di Benedetto. The Monte Timber collection stays true to the brand’s modern aesthetic but opts for raw, oiled, or stained American white oak or black walnut (on a solid-brass mount) in lieu of the ubiquitous

metallic finishes. Further elevating the material is the slender, minimalist profile of each piece, available in a range of formats including levers, rectangular pulls, circles, and semicircles. designerdoorware.com

The bespoke aluminum frame, built to fit any space, is subdivided into PIERO LISSONI rich-toned planes of laminated or tempered monolithic glass. filzfelt As is often the case with design greats, the late Austrian-American sculptor Erwin Hauer famously blurred the line between art and architecture. The Interior Design Hall of Fame member, whose mathematically intricate wall sculptures were favored by designers like Florence Knoll and appeared at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, faithfully continued working until his death at age 91. Now, three years after his passing, FilzFelt introduces the Erwin Hauer Collection: a line of hanging acoustic panels that pays tribute to the artist’s practice by reinterpreting his iconic threedimensional compositions—originally constructed from concrete, gypsum, and acrylic resin—as a flat, 100-percent wool surface. Available in 54 colorways, panels come in one standard size of roughly 5 ½ by 8 feet, and the four patterns—501, 503, 505, and 506—range from most to least private. filzfelt.com

GIULIO ROMANO
CRISTINA CELESTINO
fornace brioni
PORTRAIT: ANNACARLA GRANATA
Nestled in Italy’s Lombardy region, Gonzaga is a town rife with both Renaissance history and cotto, the fine terra-cotta clay that forms on the floodplain of the River Po. Masters of the medium make up the town’s 100-year-old Fornace Brioni, where secrets of the trade have been passed down for generations. Though historic, the family-run company continues to evolve, ergo in 2017 leaders Alessio and Alberto Brioni hired lauded Italian designer Cristina Celestino to oversee creative direction. Their collaboration now yields Giulio Romano, a wall covering for Clé Tile. The handcrafted tiles come in two shapes: a long, fluted column and a coordinating end cap, both 8 inches wide. Combined, their form echoes those of pillars and moldings found in the region’s landmarks, from the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Sabbioneta to the Ducal Palace of Mantua. new ravenna Interior designer Sasha Bikoff puts a fresh spin on a Eurocentric tile tradition, channeling American history and culture with The New World. The collection includes Atlas Maior, a mosaic tile interpretation of a 17th-century map by Dutch cartographer Joan Blaeu. Measuring 44 by 80 inches, the composition is animated with sea serpents, galleons, and dolphins ducking and diving. Its name may conjure memories of the hustle and the funky chicken, but Disco is more organic-chic than dance-floor glam. New from the French fabric and wall covering specialist, the rug collection has a jute feel, but its durable thread-bound braids make use of postconsumer-recycled plastic bottles—and a touch of polyester. Rectangular and circular options are available in three colorways: Sauge, Bananae, and Graphite. The final details of each latex-backed rug are executed almost entirely by hand, the irregularities making each unique. Can you dig it? elitis.fr

Bikini’s sculpted plastic contours look expertly nip-tucked, made in the U.S. from roto-molded polyethylene that’s easy to clean plus chemically resistant to sunblock, salt, and chlorine. Water ballasting provides secure footing for tanning in the shallows of pools, with the 10-inch-high seat ensuring derrières stay dry. The sinuous form is elemental and spare, while the color range segues from pure pop—like teal-toned Malibu and chartreuse—to subdued neutrals. Ultraviolet-light stabilizers reduce fading, ensuring hues stay megawatt bright. Life in plastic? It’s fantastic. tonikworld.com
