Chris Martin—the designer, not the singer…ahem—launches BAM!, a two-, three-, or four-seat sofa with a Pop Art sensibility. Its cartoonishly blocky form and clean, graphic profile make a strong first impression. “It looks like something that could come out of a Lichtenstein painting, hence the name!” the brand co-founder explains. There are no armrests on the fully upholstered frame (fabric covers legs and all), but the included throw pillows, filled with recycled goose and duck feathers, lend every necessary comfort. “In my home I have a narrow passage next to the sofa, and the armrest on my former couch became a barrier,” says Martin of why he chose to forgo arms on his own design. “I replaced it with BAM!, and it has really opened up the room, plus now I can access the sofa from the side.” It is that canny consideration of spatial flow that makes the sofa ideal for apartment living where square footage is at a premium. Flat-pack delivery enables easy transport up staircases and through narrow doorways.

hem Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven a decade ago, Sabine Marcelis has made quite a name for herself creating clean-cut elemental furnishings—often rendered in a pastel-tinged palette—that simultaneously celebrate and obfuscate their materiality. Best known for working in polyester resin, the Dutch designer now makes her inaugural foray into soft furnishings with Boa, for Swedish manufacturer Hem. The pouf takes the delightful shape of a doughnut, complete with a hole at its center; measuring 45 inches across and 18 high, it supports multiple sitters around its circumference or can be used as a footstool or a lounge for one. Its gestural simplicity is deceptive: The molded-foam padding is dressed in a mélange wool (in Sulfur Yellow, Cotton Candy, or Oatmeal) shape-knitted so that no seams—or scraps— are created in the process. “We had a lot of fun perfecting the prototype, choosing the colors, and planning how we can expand the straightforward O shape into a wider collection of seating,” Marcelis explains of her collaboration. We can hardly wait to see what’s next. hem.com

20years “It was exciting to experiment with the marriage between art and a cushion, which is not exactly the most obvious marriage” ANTONIO CITTERIO

seating

flexform Everyone considers the kitchen the heart of the home, the locus of family and social life. But in reality, it’s got stiff competition in the form of the living room sofa. A cozy L-shape sectional with just the right amount of sink-into-itness beckons like no other interior element; no wonder so many of us find ourselves working and even eating meals on ours (especially these days)! This phenomenon is what inspired Antonio Citterio to hatch Groundpiece, a multitasking sectional that’s a veritable room within a room—equal parts conversation pit and conversation piece. On the occasion of its 20th birthday, the best-selling design’s attributes prove just as well-suited to today as to 2001: casually low-slung seats, generously plush goose-down-filled cushions, and a Donald Judd–inspired cowhide- or suede-covered armrest that doubles as shelving or a surface for a laptop, tchotchke, etc. (Alternatively, the latter can be fully upholstered, and the sofa’s padded elements filled with Dacron.) The Italian architect and Hall of Famer describes his various seating collaborations with the maker as “supports on which we placed cushions”—a statement that describes Groundpiece’s ultimate essence, sure, but also its modesty. flexform.it/en

“We could all use some fun in our homes”

elizabeth garouste product Swing designer Elizabeth Garouste recap For decades the celebrated septuagenarian

designer has been conjuring exquisitely crafted pieces with a slightly surrealist flair, first as one half of avant-garde duo Garouste & Bonetti—their pieces still coveted by collectors and cognoscenti—and for the last 19 years as a solo act turning out increasingly imaginative concepts. Though rooted in traditional artisanal techniques and decorative-arts history, Garouste’s designs feel utterly fresh. Her new Swing chair is a reminder that every space needs a jolt of jubilance. A curvy seat dangles from a quirkily geometric wrought-iron chain like a supersize necklace. The upholstered perch, available in COM, is 30 inches wide by 26 deep and has a minimum drop of 90 inches. A double swing is also possible; after all, the more the merrier. Through Ralph Pucci. ralphpucci.com SWING

ultrafabrics The world’s leading manufacturer of animal-free fabric expands its color offerings for Volar Bio, a leather alternative certified BioPreferred by the USDA. Originally introduced in 2019, the textile made from renewable plant-based materials (including corn byproduct and wood pulp) now boasts 15 hues, among them six new shades developed based on feedback from architects, designers, and specifiers. Ideal for upholstery, vertical surfaces, and fashion applications, the palette takes its cue from the earth’s surface (think: sand and soil) as well as natural dye sources that reveal complex shades. The up-to-the-minute rich neutrals include Pitch Black, Indigotin (named for the distinctive organic blue dye), appetizing Spinach and Porcini, and thirst-inducing Matcha and Café Noir, all attractive offerings for sustainabilityminded animal lovers. As the go-to source for the likes of Herman Miller, Airstream, and United Airlines, the New York–based brand crafts the line in its Japanese mill using proprietary production methods and plans to expand sustainable offerings by 2030. ultrafabricsinc.com PHOTOGRAPHY: OLI DOUGLAS; STYLING: DESPINA CURTIS SPRING MARKET.21

Although born and raised in London, Amuah’s heritage stems from Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Among them: Sella (Latin for stool), a bleachcleanable polyesternylon accented with bouclé yarn that riffs on the traditional Ghanaian perch, the asesegua. “The pattern appears to be a random geometric design, but if you look closely, you will be able to spot the asesegua in various forms,” Amuah explains. Another standout is Ink, a polyester-nylon vivified by thick bands of chenille that was sparked by an ink spill bleeding gently into the graining of walnut veneer. bernhardtdesign.com “Ghanaian

knoll textiles The New York–based textile studio mines local talent Calico Wallpaper, co-founded by Nicholas and Rachel Cope, as guest designer for the Fields collection. “The Copes’ custom murals are rooted in a sense of timelessness, with a modern minimalist approach—the same spirit as KnollTextiles,” brand creative director Dorothy Cosonas explains. Calico produced three painterly yet graphic designs inspired by Rachel’s original works of art. A nod to the simple watercolor chart, Expanse offers rows of imperfect, luminous-hued rectangles and reads in its totality as a mural. Overlaying two distinct artworks brought forth Traverse, a stylized plaid rich in dimensionality and color play. Rachel handcrafted a series of ink stamps to produce the allover design of repetitive shapes found in Ascent, the result a nuanced geometry. All three patterns are digitally printed on Type II non-phthalate 20-ounce vinyl, rendering the end product washable and scrubbable and thus perfect for hard-wearing environments. knolltextiles.com

“The color nuances of mother-of-pearl vary according to the light”

CUBIC

arte Ever wanted to feel like you lived inside a seashell? Try Samal, a wall covering collection comprised entirely of real capiz shells that are colored, cut, and placed by hand in geometric patterns on a nonwoven backing. There are four patterns, including Cubic, a 3-D box repeat in three rich, earthy colorways; Helix, a three-pronged design in a trio of colorways; and Camber, a fish-scale motif in five colorways. Each pattern is sold in sets of five interlocking tiles (11.18 to 16.57 inches wide and 9.68 to 18.11 high) which can be applied in nearly infinite combinations. Key takeaway? The soft mother-of-pearl gleam varies according to the light, creating a moody, glamorous, and ever-changing effect on walls. arte-international.com 50

HIDE & SEEK SACHA WALCKHOFF

graham & brown To help celebrate the wall covering brand’s 75th anniversary, French designer and Christian Lacroix creative director Sacha Walckhoff looked to ancestral techniques involving the company’s primary medium: paper. Named Paper Games, the collection of four patterns hinges on paper-cutting techniques honed throughout the 18th century, when the art of the silhouette gained popularity. The method extended to Wedgwood’s Jasperware in Great Britain and landscapes of Pays-d’Enhaut in western Switzerland by 19th-century Swiss illustrators. Mischievous yet charming tree silhouettes set off against pastel and jewel-tone color bubbles form Party Land, a motif available in three colorways. Magical Forest continues the woodland theme with a shadow-like arboreal design offered in four palettes. A love of botanical expeditions brought forth Hide & Seek, in which plant outlines are contrasted against a crisp and classic striped ground. For Secret Mountain, abstract triangles group to form mountainous shapes while also referencing Polynesian tattoos. grahambrown.com

YARMOUTH

As the world dreams of seaside vacations, the San Francisco–based designer and her team beckon with their breezy Beachcomber collection. Looking to Cape Cod’s easygoing stretches of sand for inspiration, the grouping comprises three fabric patterns crafted using a mix of hand block, screen print, and embroidery techniques. Yarmouth, a modern floral on cotton named for the beach town, comes in five colorways: Tide Gray, Seaport Blue, Dune, Cardinal, and Arboretum Green. The pattern also withstands 50,000 double rubs. Nantucket showcases the lyrical repetition of that island’s sand dunes on hand-screen-printed cotton in colorways Cover Blue, Seashell, and vibrant Sunflower, with added texture courtesy of embroidery. A botanical pattern inspired by seaside town Chatham is hand-block-printed on cotton-rayon in four colorways with digital machine embroidery details. Surf’s up! seemakrish.com 60

yankatu design furniture

OCA

Brazilian designer Maria Fernanda Paes de Barros’s Xingu collection was developed in partnership with Mehinako artisans in Alto Xingu, located in the country’s Mato Grosso state. Traditional materials and methods meet today’s technology such as CNC carving to build of-the-moment design interpretations. The grouping utilizes local materials including cabreuva wood, straw yarn and woven stems from the buriti palm tree, and natural dyes and pigments. A swing dubbed Kaüpuna incorporates buriti yarn harvested, cleaned, and dried by the Mehinako women; the men contribute the wood for the bench seat, decorated with charcoal and annatto-based graphics. The construction of traditional houses inspired the Embira bench in cabreuva, with moorings made from strips of embira tree bark. Traditional buriti and cotton woven rugs become the sheathing for the Oca closet, a tall étagèrelike cabinet on spindly legs. For the Shelter credenza, two tambour-style sliding doors of turned cabreuva slats only 6 mm across are woven with cotton threads dyed naturally using raw materials harvested around the Kaüpuna village in Upper Xingu. The showstopping Beiju table, carved of solid cabreuva, balances on brick-shape wood legs and incorporates draped beaded necklaces traditionally used in rituals. yankatu.com.br

Talk about venerable history: It’s coming up on the New York Design Center’s centennial! Ninety-five years in business, to be precise. Built in the heart of Manhattan in 1926 as the New York Furniture Exchange, 200 Lex (as in, Lexington Avenue) is the country’s oldest furniture and design building. The historic 16-story, 500,000-square-foot building was designed by Ely Jacques Kahn, the prominent architect of numerous 20th-century skyscrapers. Originally, the store was available only to furniture and department store buyers, but it began to shift focus toward interior design and architecture in the late 1970s. In 1981, it became the NYDC. Today, members of the trade can browse 100 showrooms across genres (including antiques on floor 10), from Sossego’s modern Brazilian designs to work by Australian brand Harbour Outdoor; Dune’s edgy and avant-garde furniture to Benjamin Moore & Co. paint; Keilhauer, Levine Contract Furniture Group, and KI’s commercial offerings to textiles by the likes of Rosemary Hallgarten and Lee Jofa. The center also welcomes consumers through tours and its Access to Design program. nydc.com

Tough facts: 50 percent of incarcerated people return to prison within three years of release; also, 500 million tons of construction waste are produced in the U.S. annually. Formr, founded by designer Sasha Plotitsa, hopes to address high recidivism rates by offering former inmates jobs handcrafting contemporary furniture from that very waste, a two-for-one solution that gives both the makers and the materials a second life. Wall-mounted near your front door, Re-entry provides a gathering spot for pocket change, wallet, phone, and other essentials, with optional hooks for ready key access. Shelfish offers a petite ledge plus three built-in glass bud vases. Ideal for bedsides, UnpredicTable combines a floating shelf with a double-sided LED light. flooring levantin  design An assemblage of bright geometric shapes defines Urban, a rug from the graphically charged Run 2021 collection designed by Sergey Lvov with branding agency/illustrator Büro22. “We live at a time when information passes us like an infinite flow,” Lvov says. “In the conditions of global quarantine, the amount of information seemed to increase because we had more time to perceive it. Urban visualizes that information noise in a rhythmic pattern.” Radio waves of various frequencies and lengths are playfully depicted in the cut-pile polypropylene rug. The 63-inch-diameter circular design shown is the medium size, with larger and smaller rectangular variants also on offer. Something for everyone. levantindesign.com

designer Katy Pititskaya product Atom4320 recap The brand founder and creative director,

an interior and product designer as well as a mentee of Patricia Urquiola, toggles between Moscow and Milan. The patterning of her amorphous rug was sparked by the disbursement of atoms. “Think of the design as a close-up look— so close that the image is blurry and all we can see are different atoms connected with one another,” Pititskaya says. Varied pile heights, organically shaped cutouts, striations resembling rock strata, and fluffy white details distinguish the approximately 52-by-63-inch rug—a finalist of the Guiltless Plastic project launched by Rossana Orlandi. It’s hand-knotted in Nepal from Econyl, regenerated nylon made by recovering waste such as fishing nets from the oceans, fabric scraps from mills, and carpets destined for landfill. laroquestudios.com

When the world went into lockdown last year, Lulu LaFortune turned to a passion project. The Los Angeles–based designer, an alum of Kelly Wearstler’s studio, decided to launch a limitededition furniture and lighting collection she dubbed Joie De Vivre. “If we’ve learned anything during the past year, it’s to find joy in the little things,” she says. The six-item line aims to brighten our days at home. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement, LaFortune emphasizes craftsmanship in cheerful, heirloom-quality pieces like the Watts table lamp. Named for the late artist Mary Watts, it sports a stained-glass lampshade (with copper patina) atop a powder-coated aluminum base with brass hardware. The 2-foot-tall lamp, measuring 18 inches across, is manufactured by hand in the U.S. lululafortune.com

“I like to ask myself, How can I take a material that we all know but zhuzh it up just a little bit?”

bradley l bowers Bradley L Bowers aims to sketch or model something new almost every day, “just to keep that muscle working,” he says. “I think of my practice like an athlete would.” The SCAD grad has certainly honed enviable creative skills. His sculptural, crumpled-paper Halo lantern collection, for example, encompasses a simple trio of basic materials—heavyweight cotton paper, LED bulbs, and a necessary fire-retardant chemical—in partial homage to Isamu Noguchi. The lamp comes in three size ranges, from 15 to 22 inches high for the smallest to 34 to 48 inches for the largest. Each form is unique (hence the range) and, Bowers stresses, affordable, too: a small Halo is about $650. “I love making beautiful objects, but I also realize it’s a world that pushes people away,” he explains. “I want to help everyone who wants something beautiful in their home but doesn’t have $3,000 to spend.”

LAURA AVIVA

l’aviva home Eight years ago, creative director Laura Aviva noticed the baskets in a friend’s home in Colombia. “Their heft, circular weave, and silky, shiny fiber made them unlike any I’d ever seen,” she remembers. The watertight baskets were woven by the Wounaan, an indigenous group from the country’s Pacific Coast, and made of werregue, a native palm fiber. Aviva set out to work with the Wounaan on a lighting collection for her New York design studio. The result is Werregue, 22 one-of-a-kind black-and-white pendants with fiber shades made by hand in Colombia. Fitted with brass hardware, each piece takes over a month to create and incorporates traditional designs. “The bold, graphic patterning provides a mirror into the world of the weaver,” Aviva says. lavivahome.com

ductionism: a circle laser-cut from a rectangle of raw metal—steel, stainless steel, or brass—is reattached to form a 360-degree swiveling shade that directs light cast from an LED spot at the fixture’s rear. “The lamp’s design reveals its material, its manufacturing process, its function, and its use,” Bañó explains. kos “We wanted to give personality to an object that is part of everyday life,” note Joseph Guerra and Sina Sohrab, co-founders of New York industrial design studio Visibility. They’re referring to Beam, their circular bathroom basin that integrates a handy shelf within its circumference. The Cristalplant unit, measuring 44 cm across by 18 high, is offered in classic white, warm terracotta, and dove gray; a coordinating vanity, in natural or gray ash, is also available. sandhelden These high-touch countertop basins by Carlos del Castillo are 3-D-printed in quartz sand. The innovative technology allows for all manner of intricate forms (after all, sand can be manipulated into any shape imaginable!). The Simbiosis collection—so named as a play on the symbiotic relationship between architecture and industrial design—takes advantage of this production mode for its fluting, inspired by ancient Greek columns. The basins come in multiple diameters and shapes, in myriad neutrals plus muted Scandi pastels like arctic blue, mint green, and rose. While the interior of the basin is silky smooth, the outside is rough to the touch, bringing texture and contrast to any bathroom vignette. sandhelden.com

brown jordan outdoor kitchens, danver, and trex outdoor kitchens We could all do with some optimism, and the future sure looks bright according to this trio of manufacturers. Thirteen brand-new powder-coat hues—from fiery to cool—for the collaborating brands’ stainless-steel outdoor kitchens answer the demand for bold colorways in alfresco living spaces. Among the 2021 New Color Introductions are Autumn, a sunny yellow; Clementine, an orange particularly impactful paired with gray; Cotton Candy pink; and Sea Spray, a deep oceanic color somewhere between blue and green. Meanwhile Chili, a punchy red, is designer Daniel Germani’s pick as the next It-color. “Many of these new hues push the design envelope and were selected to inspire homeowners to be bold and create a space that is both eye-catching and sophisticated,” Germani says. carnegie fabrics The manufacturer teamed up with Polish artist/designer Anna Spakowska on a collection of space-dividing hanging panels whose intricate 3-D patterning pays homage to traditional faworki pastry (think: a little twist of sugar-dusted deep-fried dough). Coterie is just as delectable. Swaths of sound-dampening Italian wool felt— comprising 10 percent polyester—are cut and pinched to create 47.5-by-118-inch dimensional panels, which can be suspended from Carnegie Bar or Beam hanging hardware or mounted to the floor. The four designs, which include an embroidered option, are offered in nine fabric colors. We’re eating them up! carnegiefabrics.com

turf Is it a work of art—or an acoustic treatment? Scanlines is a bit of both. The Chicago-based company’s patentpending technology transforms a customer-supplied image into a soundabsorbing dimensional feature crafted of PET felt. How it works: An algorithm translates the intensity of the source imagery’s color shades into various depths. The highperformance accent is ideal for any space, from an open-plan office to a hospitality environment. An eight-color paint palette dreamed up by interiors impresario Kelly Wearstler marks the British maker’s first collaboration with an outside designer in its 75-year history. Dubbed the California collection, the series of water-based low-VOC paints is available in all standard Farrow & Ball finishes. The richly pigmented offerings have the diffuse, atmospheric quality of colors viewed in the clear, bright SoCal light. Consider Citrona, an earthy chartreuse inspired by lemon trees; Palm, a desaturated green that’s a paean to the titular tree; Salt, a crisp white conjuring Pacific Ocean air; Hazy, a muted blue-gray the color of a foggy morn; and Stoke, the exact gray of a cloudy coastal day. “Color is the spirit of a room,” Wearstler says. FLOW X

access bdd Anyone who has used or lived with a standard stair lift knows they aren’t the most high-tech or high-style devices. But for many people, the mobility tool is essential for getting up and down stairs in an elevatorless space—and a particularly smart solution for residences where aging in place is a concern. Enter British manufacturer Access BDD, which set out to reinvent the genre with a competition to solicit next-gen designs. The winning concept, by London’s Pearson Lloyd, is now in production. With its clean lines, compact footprint, and laminated-timber backrest, Flow X is a perfect marriage of ergonomics and aesthetics. Elements are designed with user-centrism in mind and to minimize bending and twisting on the part of the sitter. Armrests pre-programmed with emergency call buttons unfold 180 degrees to provide extra support; seat and footrest rotate together; ample space below the arms allows easy movement of legs and hips; controls are intuitive. The unit also attaches to the stair rather than the wall, making for easier install. “With Flow X we hope to destigmatize the sector with an empathetic and contemporary approach to ergonomics and userinterface design,” notes design firm co-founder Luke Pearson. Mission accomplished.

brokis

The production of high-end handblown-glass lighting is not by nature an earth-conscious enterprise: About one third of the material used to craft this Czech maker’s designs typically winds up on the factory floor. Once destined for landfill, these leftovers—up to a ton per week—are now being upcycled into Brokisglass, a durable and versatile slab with a distinct marble-like appearance. It took nearly a decade and much R&D for Janštejn Glassworks, the 200-year-old factory the lighting brand grew out of, to perfect the process of fusing shards into panels measuring 35 by 60 cm or 59 cm square (custom sizes are also possible) and 6 or 8 mm thick. Offered in 15 basic colors and two finishes, Brokisglass is well suited to creations ranging from countertops and credenzas to interior cladding. Customization options include curving, sandblasting, and beveling. brokisglass.cz/en

One of Jasper Morrison’s first collaborations with the Italian brand, in the late 1980s, was the Thinking Man’s chair, with a springy flat-strip steel seat and squiggly tubular-steel spaghetti arms that terminate in circular drink rests. The perch has only gotten better with age: Joining the original varnish-finish options—terra-cotta, green, dark gray, gypsum white—is this new galvanized version in hot-dip zinc. Get it while you can: The iteration is being released in a limited edition of 25 numbered pieces (replete with stainless-steel plaque) by Twentytwentyone, to honor the London shop’s silver anniversary. Turns out Morrison and Twentytwentyone proprietors Simon Alderson and Tony Cunningham go way back, having met in the early ’90s when the former purchased Joe Colombo lights from the latter, at the time nascent design dealers operating in London’s Alfies Antique Market. “And here we are, 30 years on, with them proposing a new finish for one of my earliest designs,” Morrison marvels. “I don’t know why I didn’t think of it earlier!” We all get by with a little help from our friends. twentytwentyone.com

CHIARA ANDREATTI

Italian designer Chiara Andreatti’s first collaboration with the thirdgeneration family-owned brand includes laid-back rugs, daybeds, and tables destined for the great outdoors. The grouping’s name, Guna— Sanskrit for “energy that envelops all things”—references the woven rope, stitches, and textures at its heart. Mélanged hemp and cocoa nautical rope are handwoven over the treated-wood frame of the collection’s low, spacious, and stackable charpoy, or traditional Indian bed, offered in two sizes and sporting cushions covered in knit-stitch recycled polyester; the daybed’s flared leg shape repeats on a generously scaled coffee table. Two innovative rug designs, both 91 by 118 inches, are crafted of an ultrathin polypropylene yarn (woven, in two contrasting colors, on a latest-generation knitting loom). And weather-treated wood tops a pair of side tables with sculptural ceramic bases—one C-shape, the other akin to a four-pointed star. The collection offers a place for all the desired outdoor activities: sitting, lying down, reading, eating, or simply relaxing. gervasoni1882.it
